The aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) support for Operation Inherent Resolve in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations (AOO) has been “critical” to the efforts to defeat ISIS, shipboard leaders said.

“The defeat and destruction of ISIS was our primary concern and our ship-air

wing team performed superbly,” Bush Commanding Officer Capt. Will Pennington said. “Moving that effort into the 5th Fleet AOO allowed us to not only continue that critical fight but to also demonstrate our commitment to our allies and partners in a critical region of the world.”

It takes a village

Childcare can be an issue for any working family.

No matter what the parents’ work schedules may be, in most cases, there is a need for some form of childcare.

The need for childcare in military households is even greater, being that military personnel are technically on duty 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

The military provides childcare to help meet the needs of service members and Department of Defense (DOD) personnel.

The following are various types of childcare facilities: Child Development Center (CDC): Facilitybased childcare programs that typically operate Monday through Friday for children age six weeks to ďŹ ve years old.

Child Development Homes (CDH): A homebased program provided by certiďŹ ed personnel.

School Age Care (SAC): Is a facility-based program that typically services children enrolled in kindergarten up to 12-years old. These facilities typically provide before and after care for children.

One thought that plagues many parents’ minds when it comes to childcare is cost. “All childcare is subsidized throughout the CDCs, the youth centers and the

We count everything on your LES [leave and earning statement], and we also take your rank and marital status into consideration.�

Military childcare strives to provide services to ďŹ t the ďŹ nancial and physical needs of any service member or DOD employee. “We give 100 percent,â€?

Majette said. “We are committed to all kids, and we care about what we do. We have a variety of families in our facility, from [dual military], single parents and DOD.�

Information Systems Technician 1st Class Allison Torres, a dual military Sailor, can attest to how beneďŹ cial CDCs are. “I now have two daughters,â€? Torres said. “One goes to the before and after care at the youth center, and my other daughter goes to the CDC on Little Creek and has since she was six-weeks old. The security of having them on a base is comforting. You know that base takes lockdowns or drills seriously and that my children are cared for by loving, qualiďŹ ed people. Each facility has been equipped with high-tech cameras for monitoring.â€?

schedule of the Navy. “Since the CNO [Chief of Naval Operations] changed the hours of the CDC from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., to the current 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., I ďŹ nd it very easy for my work schedule to be able to facilitate my daily requirements,â€? Torres said.

While the CDC offers hours of availability for dutydays, Torres ďŹ nds it easier to ask family for help on those occasions, due to the additional costs for the extra service at the facility.

Establishing childcare is a multi-step process. A good starting place is Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC). Although FFSC doesn’t directly provide childcare, they can point families in the right direction.

the National Association of Child Care Resources and Referral Agencies (NACCRRA) and Military Families Child Care Assistance.

As Torres found out, patience is a virtue when applying for childcare, and as with most things, there is always room for improvement. “I was stationed on the Oceana Base at the time of my ďŹ rst pregnancy at a command with 51 pregnant Sailors,â€? Torres said. “It was not easy being a ďŹ rst-time mom with no assistance from my command. I believe it would be beneďŹ cial if FFSC or the command themselves offered more childcare classes. It’s always been my passion to help pregnant mothers in the military succeed while on a maternity tour.â€?

Most Sailors are familiar with the dangers of driving under the inuence of alcohol. We see and hear the messages that discourage drinking and driving, but it is still one of the leading causes of injuries or deaths in the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 10,000 people were killed in drunk driving accidents each year from 2010-2014, or 1 every 53 minutes. The consequences of drunk driving are very real. “People don’t realize what kind of effect drunk driving will have,â€? Operations Specialist 3rd Class Cole Weatherly said. “They don’t know what kind of impact it will have on themselves and their family or on another person and their family.â€?

Weatherly’s step-father was involved in a car accident in which he and the other driver had been drinking. The passenger in the other car was killed and Weatherly’s step-

father was seriously injured. “The accident brought us together as a family at ďŹ rst, but after he went to prison, it ended up tearing the family apart. He changed a lot, some for the good and some for the bad, but he’s deďŹ nitely a different person after the accident and my parents eventually got divorced.â€?

The impact of drunk driving stretches far beyond just the intoxicated driver affected. Alcohol-related trafďŹ c accidents involve passengers, pedestrians and occupants in other vehicles. Other victims include the family and friends of the drivers, any passerby, and even the police ofďŹ cers and medical team that have to see a traumatic scene. “My friend in high school drove drunk, got into an accident and was seriously injured,â€? Damage Controlman Fireman Nawaz Sharif said. “He didn’t hit anyone, but he ran into a tree. He was a top athlete with scholarships and after the accident, he lost all motivation to do the usual things he did, like sports and he lost all his scholarships.â€?

Consequences of drinking

and driving can include loss of rank or pay, separation from the Navy, civilian punishments such as jail time and ďŹ nes, and possible injury or death. “Most people probably feel they can handle the alcohol,â€?

Sharif said. “They don’t consider other people and forget about everything else that matters when they drink and drive.�

According to the National Highway TrafďŹ c Safety Administration, drunk driving costs the U.S. $44 billion a year. A ďŹ rst-time offense can cost the driver up to $20,000 in ďŹ nes and legal fees. “If someone is seen drinking and you know they were driving, you should step in and do something to stop them from driving,â€? Weatherly said. “Call a taxi or someone or take their keys.

Too many people will stand by and watch someone drink then go drive back home and think it’s not their problem.

They need to start making it their problem.�

NAS Oceana advances 28 Sailors

Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana advanced 28 first, second and third class petty officers during a frocking ceremony held at the Chapel of the Good Shepherd at NAS Oceana.

Frocking is a Navy tradition that provides the selected Sailors an opportunity to wear the uniform and take on the responsibilities of their new rank before they are formally advanced.

Sailors were advanced based on a number of factors such as evaluations, exam scores, time in rate, awards and pass not advanced points.

Each Sailor received a frocking letter from NAS Oceana Commanding Officer Capt. Richard Meadows, which reads in part, “Your appointment carries with it the obligation that you exer-

cise increased authority and willingly accept greater responsibility. Occupying now a position of greater authority, you must strive with a renewed dedication toward the valued ideal of service with honor.”

NAS Oceana’s Command Master Chief Lee Salas expressed his pride to watch the Sailors advance and to be a part of the frocking ceremony.

“It’s always an awesome day when a Sailor advances,” Salas said. “To know how hard they studied and trained for their new leadership position and that continuing to do so will hopefully make their next advancement just as successful.”

Master-at-Arms 3rd class Christine Jimenez, a newly frocked petty officer, said this is her first time up for advancement exam. “I read the bibs and studied the Basic Military Rating books to pre-

pare. I am excited that I have advancement. It’s the next step toward making 2nd class next year and staying in for the full twenty years.”

Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Antonio Buendo said he is proud to have made second class. “This was my third time taking this particular exam. I studied harder, I worked harder, and I did everything I could to succeed this time around. My next focus will be on either getting my Air Warfare or possibly working toward becoming a Special Warfare CombatantCraft Crewman.”

“The training these Sailors receive is critical not only for advancement purposes but for the mission,” Salas said.

“It’s about them being safe in the operation they are going to be undertaking. We are all fighters and we have to be able to fight for our ship, advancement is an important way to support that mission.”

Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 15, also known as the “Valions,” was officially deactivated during a command deactivation ceremony at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana May 31st.

The squadrons Commanding Officer Cmdr. Matthew Stevenson lead the ceremony and with other speakers, spoke of VFA-15’s considerable history and devotion to service.

“Since its inception in January 1942, VFA-15 has established a history and tradition of pressing home the attack in order to defend the nation,” Stevenson said.

“That tradition has carried on throughout its history because of the devotion of its Sailors.”

VFA-15 was originally established as Torpedo Squadron Four (VT-4) in 1942, just one month after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

In the 75 years since that time, the Valions have had four different designations and flown six different aircraft. Valions’ pilots and crew have operated from the decks of fifteen different aircraft carriers and made 35 major deployments to all reaches of the globe.

platform or location, the Valions have always upheld the highest standards of Naval Aviation. The squadron has been awarded the Battle “E” for efficiency a total of ten times. And was the Estocin award winner in 1999, given to the finest Strike Fighter Squadron in the Navy.

“In December of 2015 VFA-15 was faced with two choices: to accept our fate and simply exist till the last nail was put in the coffin, or to train and equip our squadron for combat operations,” said Stevenson. “We chose to train and to fight.

We continued to demand the very best of ourselves; this squadron in a twelve month period detached eight times.”

Stevenson said the results of his Sailor’s dedication are telling. “Three of my four remaining junior Sail-

ors were accepted into the Top Gun program, where they remain as instructors; the fourth remained here as an instructor for VFA-106.

The Sailors of this squadron accomplished all they did with the oldest operational aircraft on the flightline, aircraft designed to last 6,000 hours of flight time, yet maintained operability past 9,000.”

For the past 75 years, the Valions of VFA-15 have prepared to forward deploy and when directed, project lethal combat air power as directed by the National Command Authority. With continued emphasis on the basics, VFA-15 has executed by-the-book for decades.

Their service to the Navy and the country as a whole is an outstanding example of professionalism, efficiency and pride in service.

Midshipmen train aboard Eisenhower

Twenty-one midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy join the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) underway for carrier qualifications, May 30 to June 5.

Every summer, midshipman from universities across the country go on summer cruises aboard U.S. Navy vessels. These cruises are especially important for midshipman first class who are in their senior years of schooling and are close to making the important decision of choosing which officer designation they wish to commission into.

For one midshipman, this experience helped him reaffirm his upcoming decision on what kind of naval officer he wants to be.

“Being aboard Eisenhower has solidified the fact that I do want to pursue a commission as a Surface Warfare Officer in Nuclear Power,” Midshipman 1st Class David Medrano said.

Eisenhower is one of the options for midshipman seeking a career in nuclear power to experience firsthand what life at sea on a nuclearpowered aircraft carrier is like.

“Being on Eisenhower has been greatly influential so far,” Midshipman 1st Class Benjamin Ruff said.

“Being able to see all of the different evolutions, such as flight ops and

the reactor, has had a huge impact on my decision-making process. By the end of this cruise, I hope to have a more firm stance on the commissioning I would like to pursue.”

Aircraft carriers can house more than 5,000 Sailors at a time. Their massive size and projection of power have a way of swooning everyone that comes in contact with them.

“Being on Eisenhower strengthened a fact I already knew — aircraft carriers are awesome,” Mid-

shipman 1st Class Jasmine Walker said. “My dad was a naval flight officer and would take me to visit when I was little. I’ve been awestruck with them ever since.”

Summer cruises also give midshipmen an opportunity to meet the backbone of the Navy — enlisted Sailors.

“My running mate’s enthusiasm has made me even more excited to pursue this career,” Medrano said.

“How excited he is every single day

to do his job makes me look forward to joining the fleet and working with Sailors like him.”

“This has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Ruff said, “It’s just an overall incredible experience and I look forward to my commission so I can work with all the wonderful people I’ve met on these summer cruises.”

Summer cruises are highly important to a midshipmen’s professional training. The cruises provide

midshipmen with the first-hand knowledge and experience that turn midshipmen into naval officers.

“My advice to future midshipmen is to make sure you take advantage of all of the wonderful opportunities we’re afforded,” Medrano said.

Eisenhower is currently underway conducting carrier qualifications during the sustainment phase of the Optimized Fleet Response Plan (OFRP).

Carderock engineers work with VMI Cadets to design automated ramp for unmanned SURC

Volunteers from Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), Atlantic turned out to tackle a really, really dirty job.

Wearing boots, beat-up jeans and a fair amount of sunscreen and bug repellant, they pulled up trash and debris from along the banks of the Elizabeth River where it meets Lafayette River Annex, all part of the command’s involvement in the annual Clean the Bay Day. The event, now in its 29th year, involves shoreline and stream cleanup as one of the largest volunteer events in the Commonwealth. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the sponsor of the event, estimated 6,000 volunteers at 250 sites across Virginia and hauled out 100,000 pounds of litter and debris across 450 miles of shoreline this year.

As is unofficial tradition, NAVFAC Atlantic employees get a jump on the event, donating volunteer hours the day before the formal event.

Blessed with a beautiful early summer day lacking in much humidity, volunteers noted an increase in the amount of some kinds of litter and debris such as plastic straws and discarded ice bags. A few pieces of decking were also uncovered along the shore, attributed to large storms in recent months.

The team also got a chance to check up on past year’s efforts, restored oyster beds growing and thriving in the Lafayette River.

In all, these volunteers collected 440 pounds of junk from a quarter mile strip in less than 90 minutes. Last year’s haul of 600 pounds, but it proves that little things do add up.

NAVFAC Atlantic Marine Resources Specialist Jaqueline Bort, who served as events coordinator, said the Clean the Bay Days has its highs and lows.

“It’s always amazing, and at the same time sad, that we collect so much from such a small area,” said Bort. “But it’s great to get a team together to do some good, and to show how easy it is to make a positive impact on our environment.”

One of the more common items found this year were discarded bags from the ice you pick up before a party or day at the beach. Plastic bags are a serious hazard to wildlife in the rivers and estuaries that feed the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem.

As stated in the final report, the design for the automated bow door had to eliminate the need for human intervention while minimizing the changes to the existing structure. The design also had to meet military and government mechanical specifications and be able to transport the UGV, as well as a fully burdened Sailor or Marine to the beach.

“They were able to visit the SURC that we have over at the V-47 waterfront facility down at combatant craft,” Holbert said. “They got a tour and got to see a little bit of the work that goes on down there, as well as get on the SURC itself, take measurements and kind of have a physical understanding of what the problem was.

“After that, they went back to VMI and began the design process, which started off with looking at the constraints of the problem, some of the physical dimensions that they took, what type of mechanical linkages they can design, what type of actuators, etc. They went through a few different trade studies and once they selected an actuator design they did a structural analysis. They did a finite element analysis on the model that they built in Solid Works, as well as they chose a pneumatic system. So they did a pneumatic air supply analysis, as well as an electrical controls analysis.”

According to the final product report, the bow door automation system is capable of achieving the maximum angle of the bow door relative to the deck, and the proposed system does not require any modifications to the existing bow structure, which significantly lowers the cost of implementing the design.

“It was an awesome experience for me as a new hire within my first couple of years to be able to interface with a project group like that. That was kind of a trial, because in the future I’m sure I’ll be holding a similar position in one way or another. It was good just being able to work with the students — with myself not being too far removed from the senior design process — it was nice to help them through that and to share some insights,” Holbert said.

Before coming to Carderock, Holbert earned his bachelor’s and master’s in naval architecture and marine engineering from the University of Michigan. He said University of Michigan is one of about a dozen or so naval architecture programs in the country, and Carderock remains prevalent as the standard for naval architecture and innovation.

As leaders in innovation for the U.S. Navy, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division often brings together their workforce of scientists and engineers and partners with other government agencies, private companies and universities under Cooperative Research and Development Agreements.

A CRADA with the Virginia Military Institute led to a design for an automated bow door for the Small Unit Riverine Craft (SURC) which was transitioned into an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) by Carderock’s Unmanned Maritime Mobility Group at its Combatant Craft Division in Norfolk, Virginia.

As part of their senior design project, Virginia Military Institute cadets Tyler Corcoran, Brandon Conley and Austin Roe, under the mentorship of Professor Dr. Gerald Sullivan, worked with Carderock engineers to come up with a fully-functional design to automate the bow door of the unmanned SURC that originally had to be manually deployed.

According to Corcoran, Conley and Roe’s final report, the SURC bow door is required in order to transport an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) from the vessel to the beach without human intervention. Successful transportation of the UGV from the vessel to the beach also requires installation of a fully automated ramp system that spans the gap between the end of the existing bow door to the beach. UGVs could potentially play a vital part in safely clearing a path once a USV or other craft is beached, and are intended to reduce risk of potential hazards on land.

Jonathan Holbert, a naval architect in the Center for Innovation in Ship Design at Carderock’s headquarters in West Bethesda, Maryland, was one of the engineers in the Unmanned Maritime Mobility Group that worked with the VMI cadets to complete the project.

“VMI usually sets up sponsors for their projects so the students can work with real-life scenarios interfacing with a real customer,” Holbert said.

“These projects are very beneficial in giving the student the technical interaction, as well as professional interaction. What the cadets were able to accomplish with the automation of the bow door in the short few months of a semester was very impressive.”

Holbert came to Carderock in August 2015 following his participation in the Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program. His work currently focuses on the development of surface combatant concept designs, but he said that he has had the benefit of being able to go on a variety of rotations. USS Jason Dunham completes highly successful INSURV

The crew of the guidedmissile destroyer USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109) recently completed the Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) assessment and received an overall assessment score of 92% — well above the class average.

During a three-day span, 93 inspectors assessed installed systems throughout the ship.

The assessment is designed to test the ship’s material readiness to conduct operations in the world’s most demanding environments. It consisted

of underway demonstrations, engineering plant and steering checks, air defense, selfdefense, undersea warfare detect-to-engage sequences and live-fire gunnery events.

The destroyer returned to port the morning of the second day and immediately transitioned to the in port phase of INSURV, during which Sailors presented their spaces by demonstrating hundreds of equipment and material checks to the inspectors.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the crew for their achievement during INSURV,” Jason Dunham Commanding Officer Cmdr. Kevin Hoffman said. “This is truly a testament to their ability to plan

ahead, simultaneously manage operational tasking and material readiness, and continue to showcase the fighting spirit of our ship’s namesake.

As the families staying at the House awoke and went to the kitchen, they were greeted by several smiling Sailors offering plates of the freshly made breakfast.

“It makes me feel good knowing that there are organizations like this out there to help families in need,” Greene said. “This has been a very fulfilling experience. Being here and making breakfast for these families is just my way of saying I feel your pain and I am here to help.”

Sailors continued cooking as Vickie Kennedy, the house manager at the Ronald McDonald Charity, walked into the kitchen smiling at the warm reception she received from the Mustangs.

“I love having Carl Smith and the rest of the Mustangs here,” Kennedy said. “He has an infectious spirit that brightens everyone’s day and his positive character really helps the families that are staying here start their day in a positive manner.”

Kennedy walked around the kitchen talking with the officers thanking them all for coming and posed for several pictures with members of the Mustang Association.

Breakfast came to an end as the Mustangs were scattered about the kitchen and dining room. From cleaning the counters and washing dishes to chatting among the families who dined a few feet away; for a brief few hours, all worries seemed to drift away with laughter and conversation.

It was early in the morning, June 5, as members of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington’s (CVN 73) Mustang Association prepared breakfast in the kitchen of the Norfolk Ronald McDonald House Foundation.

The sound of bacon and sausage sizzling in a frying pan filled the air as an officer ferociously whisked away at a bowl of several dozen eggs.

The Mustangs have frequently supported the Norfolk Ronald McDonald House in various ways and this time they cooked breakfast for the families residing there. The Ronald McDonald House supports families in need by providing a home to rest and refresh while their children receive treatment at local children’s hospitals.

“The purpose of the Mustangs getting together is to build camaraderie,” Chief Warrant Officer Carl Smith said. “Going out to different COMRELs [community relations events] helps us learn how to work together and still have fun at the same time. Being able to cook breakfast for some well-deserving families who are in a tough time really helps to build morale, not only for those families, but for the Mustangs as well.”

Abraham Lincoln earns flight deck certification

The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) earned its flight deck carrier (FDC) qualifications while underway in the Atlantic Ocean.

The certification ensures that Abraham Lincoln’s flight deck, as well as the Sailors who conduct flight operations, is capable of safely launching and recovering aircraft.

The last jet landing aboard the Abraham Lincoln occurred Aug. 6, 2012, just prior to the ship entering a fouryear Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH). The certification is a major milestone on the ship’s way to becoming fully mission ready.

To certify in flight operations, the Abraham Lincoln Air Department was required to catch 50 aircraft on the first day of flight operations, 110 the following day, 40 of which will be at night. Abraham Lincoln had a total of 160 catches by the end of flight deck certification.

“Only 60 or 70 percent of the Sailors have seen the flight deck doing flight operations,” Air Boss Cmdr. David Burmeister said. “Still, they contributed like seasoned Sailors to make this a success.”

Sailors welcomed the longawaited opportunity to apply the skills and training they had received as the ship began launching and recovering aircraft.

“All the long days, hard work, maintenance and training in the yards finally paid off,” Burmeister said. “It was a rewarding feeling having the first aircraft land.”

With the flight deck certified, Abraham Lincoln and the crew can now look forward to continuing routine operations at sea in preparation for future deployment.

Sailors in the cattery cleaned out litter boxes in all of the rooms, wiped down windows and mopped the floors as cats climbed among them, demanding attention as they cleaned.

“It has been really relaxing cleaning the cattery,” Operations Specialist 3rd Class Rachel Forney said, a volunteer for the community relations event (COMREL). “I am really impressed with this place. The kennels are really large and there is a lot of food and toys for all of the animals here. It’s nice to be able to help out in any way I can.”

As the day went on, Talley moved from station to station making sure Sailors were comfortable with the work they were doing.

“This has been a huge help to us,” Talley said. “Having all of these Sailors here has really assisted us is many ways. We only have one maintenance person, John, and it is really great that we have people coming to help him so we don’t have to take away from other departments so we can get the work that needs to be finished, accomplished.”

Walking down a hallway adjacent to the main lobby lies an office where once you walk in your eyes are greeted by hundreds and hundreds of photos of all sorts of animals, and three small dogs, each with their own bed to lie in. This is the office fro executive director of the Norfolk SCPA Rob Blizard.

“Something a lot of people don’t realize is that we are really running two integrated businesses here,” Blizard said.

“One is the shelter for homeless animals.

But we also have a public affordable veterinary clinic. The clinic started about 20 years ago as just a spay and neuter clinic, but that has morphed into something bigger. We do exams, dentistry, surgeries such as mass removals and we have a walk-in vaccine clinic six days a week, which is why our lobby is always so busy.”

In 2016, the Norfolk SPCA provided affordable medical care for shelter animals, city shelter animals and animals owned by the public. Norfolk SPCA conducted 3,280 spays and neuters, provided 11,120 walk-in vaccines to clinic patients and performed 1,130 dental and other surgeries.

“Providing all of these services with a limited staff, many of whom are volunteers, often keeps the staff pressed for work. So having volunteers such as Sailors is greatly welcomed and appreciated,” Blizard said.

“Having Sailors volunteer here really warms my heart,” Blizard added. “I have the greatest respect for folks that are in the military and all that they do to protect us and keep us safe. I love the fact that we get groups of them here to come in and help us. The Sailors are usually eager and young and healthy so they can help out with all sorts of things. We here at the Norfolk SPCA are very honored and grateful to have these Sailors from the George Washington here with us today and I just want to say thank you to everyone that helped us and for what you do in the military.”

Mock fuel spill tests military emergency response

Vessels belonging to the Navy (USN), the Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the Coast Guard (USCG) responded to calls as fuel from an unknown source poured into Puget Sound.

The Navy joins the nation in recognizing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month throughout June.

After an exhaustive search, U.S. Navy and Japan Coast Guard assets suspended their search efforts at midnight on June 11 for a Sailor assigned to guided-missile cruiser USS Shiloh (CG 67).

The Sailor was reported missing and assumed overboard June 8 at about 9:30 p.m. while Shiloh was conducting routine operations 180 miles east of Okinawa, Japan.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, and the crew of the USS Shiloh during this difficult time,” Commander of U.S. 7th Fleet Vice Adm. Joseph P. Aucoin said.

“I’m proud of the effort the crews of the Reagan Strike Group and our Japanese allies made to find our shipmate.”

New era with more opportunity for family education begins in Chinhae

A new era of education opportunities began in Chinhae as teachers, students, and family members said goodbye to C.T. Joy Elementary School during a closing ceremony at Commander, Fleet Activities Chinhae (CFAC), June 2.

The ceremony commemorated the history of the 57-year-old school and highlighted vast new education opportunities made possible through seven international schools.

“Fifty-seven years ago, the doors of this school opened for the first time with the promise of a quality education and the vision to ‘inspire students to lead and learn to their fullest potential,’” said guest speaker Rear Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Navy Region Korea. “Today, we are closing C.T. Joy but keeping that vision alive by opening up seven international schools, providing new opportunities and stateof-the-art resources.”

Ms. Lois Rapp, the director of Student Excellence for the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), shared Cooper’s belief that the transition would greatly benefit current and future students by providing a unique opportunity not available with a standard DoDEA school program.

“Families in the Chinhae community will now have the option of selecting one of the several international schools; all with different programming and focus areas, which is what makes the opportunity a unique one,” said Rapp. “Families can also choose to homeschool their child through the Non-DoD Schools Program as an alternative to the private school option. “ Rapp continued by remarking that Chinhae fami-

lies will now join a larger worldwide community participating in international schools.

“You [the Chinhae community] will join the approximately 3,600 students’ worldwide who have the extraordinary opportunity to attend and engage in international schooling,” Rapp said. “While there is nothing like the DoDEA experience, students will make new friends of multi-national backgrounds and gain exposure to new curricula, languages, and courses.”

Former C.T. Joy student and current active duty Sailor assigned to CFAC, Information Systems Technician Second Class Calvin Rifareal shared his experience as a student nine years ago.

“We were welcomed with open arms and my attendance at CT Joy was the

main reason adjusting to life in Korea was effortless,” said Rifareal. “My days as a fighting Sea Turtle set the foundation for me to be the person I am today, and the cherished memories I have [for C.T. Joy] will live on forever.”

After C.T. Joy officially closes June 16, students will have the opportunity to attend one of seven international schools in the Chinhae and Busan area or be homeschooled under the Non-DoD Schools Program.

“Today, as we rightfully honor and appreciate our past,” said Cooper. “I ask you to join me in looking toward a bright future of education in Chinhae. The future brings new opportunities and new adventures.

So I am excited about the future, I hope that you are as well.”

C.T Joy Elementary School was named after Adm. Charles Turner Joy who retired from the Navy in 1954 after serving in WWI, WWII, and the Korean War. Located on the southeastern coast of the Republic of Korea, Commander Fleet Activities Chinhae is the only U.S. Navy installation on Asia’s mainland, providing service and operational support to the fleet and strengthening the U.S.-Republic of Korea alliance.

Naval Oceanography aims to become leader in unmanned systems

More than 300 people attended the first Naval Oceanography Unmanned Systems Operational Demonstration May 31–June 2, hosted

by Commander of Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (COMNAVMETOCCOM) at the Combat Readiness Training CenterBattlefield Airmen Center in Gulfport, Mississippi.

“Naval Oceanography has over two decades of experience operating unmanned systems,” COMNAVMETOCCOM and Oceanographer of the Navy Rear Adm. Tim Gallaudet said. “The purpose of the demonstration was to build on that experience by expanding and strengthening our network of partners to innovate faster so we can make better decisions quicker than our adversaries.”

To simulate Navy missions for the demonstration and test unmanned systems capabilities, the participants performed Fleet mission areas such as Humanitarian Assistance/ Disaster Relief (HA/DR); Sea Control; Theater Anti-submarine Warfare (ASW); Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR); as well as a Cyber Challenge and an Unmanned Maritime Systems Certification program.

COMNAVMETOCCOM Deputy Commander and Technical Director Dr. Bill Burnett said, “We’ve been deploying unmanned systems in the Gulf of Mexico since March to not only showcase their ability to perform the ‘dull, dirty and dangerous’ missions to our partners in the Fleet and private sector, but also to assess the feasibility of hosting a 2018 Fleet Experimentation (FLEX) event for unmanned systems with the Naval Warfare Development Command.”

In any environment, it is imperative that Navy forces understand the ocean and atmosphere. The The-

ater ASW mission provided near real-time oceanographic data to show how an accurate assessment of sound speed profiles better represents the ocean’s effects on sonar performance. The Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) worked with the U.S. Air Force 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron “Hurricane Hunters” to deploy profiling floats to measure conductivity, temperature and depth and drifters to track ocean currents and changing water column properties. These unmanned systems continuously collect data that is communicated to NAVOCEANO, who then processes it into the ocean and atmospheric models that run on supercomputers at the Navy DOD Supercomputing Resource Center.

Knowing the environment improves the Fleet’s ability to safely maneuver and maintain command of the seas. The Sea Control mission focused on deploying multiple, networked unmanned underwater

and surface systems from USNS Maury (T-AGS 66) to deliver environmental assessments in support of surface navigation safety and mine countermeasures. As these systems collected bathymetry data, they would communicate positions back to a Maritime Operations Center (MOC). The future intent is to have all unmanned systems reporting their locations back to the 24/7 CTG 80.7 Command Center.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sea phase also included an air defense exercise, division tactics, communications exercises, a gunnery exercise, cross-deck ďŹ&#x201A;ight operations, anti-submarine warfare operations, a photo exercise, and mine warfare operations.

Several new training events were added to this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shore phase, including a Basic Maritime Analysis Course. Designed to increase analytic skills that support and strengthen maritime domain awareness, 26 ofďŹ cers representing the six agencies within the Royal Thai Maritime Engagements Coordinating Center (MECC) attended the ďŹ ve-day training, which culminated in a practical scenario-based exercise. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The maritime domain is critical to the security, safety, economy, and environment of a country,â&#x20AC;? said course instructor Lt. David Andre. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Effectively managing that domain requires the ability to

collect, process, and analyze information from a variety of sources, and the training this week emphasized that.â&#x20AC;?

Shore phase events in 2017 included engineering and damage control training; legal symposia; visit, board search and seizure training; diving operations and salvage training; mine warfare training; and anti-submarine warfare training. Sailors from Coronado also partnered with 7th Fleetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rock band, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Orient Express,â&#x20AC;? for community relations activities at four schools and a child development center in Sattahip.

Future CARAT exercises will continue to feature complex and relevant naval training and security engagements. Its continuing relevance for more than two decades speaks to the high quality of exercise events and the enduring value of regional cooperation among allies and partners in South and Southeast Asia.

New realistic submarine bridge trainer opens at Trident Training Facility Bangor

The new Submarine Bridge Trainer (SBT) officially opened at Trident Training Facility (TRITRAFAC) Bangor during a ribbon cutting ceremony, June 5.

Rear Adm. John Tammen, commander, Submarine Group 9, Capt. John Fancher, commanding officer of TRITRAFAC Bangor, and Rear Adm. Moises DelToro, commander, Naval Undersea Warfare Center, cut the ribbon to officially open the new trainer.

“What we are doing here today, is making the longterm investments needed to making sure that we stay at the top of our game,” Tammen said. “Today’s strategic deterrence is not what it was in the 80s, there are a lot more adversaries out there, and we are not resting on our laurels as we wait for Ohio replacement. What we are doing is continuing to invest in our future and the most important part of our future is the people. So we are making this investment into this state of the art bridge trainer, to make sure that our crews, when they throw off that line, are ready to do their mission.”

The SBT gives submarine bridge team members the ability to navigate, pilot and moor the boat to and from a pier, while interacting with a complex visual and auditory environment, with all of the relevant ship sensors and systems.

“Our job here at Trident Training Facility Bangor is to provide premiere worldclass training to the submarines stationed in the Pacific Northwest,” Fancher said.

“What you see here today is a new incredible facility that blows me away. I am so excited about the capability this new trainer brings to the submarine force and the increased ability that they will have to maintain their proficiency and safely navigate out of port.”

In this near life-size mockup of a generic submarine sail, Sailors are surrounded by a 360-degree horizontal and 70-degree vertical dynamic environment that includes 18 channels of visual imagery and 16 channels of 3D sound. A dual attack center has also been completed that will provide ship systems and periscopes required for surfaced events.

when driving a submarine is navigating on the surface, because you are close to land and other surface contacts,” Fancher said. “It is not only one of the most critical things that we do, but it is also one of the things that we actually do the least amount of times during a deployment. This trainer allows us to practice piloting, navigating and managing surface contacts in real life scenarios. This allows us to practice it to a fidelity that is just about as good, and in some respects better, than actually being on the boat.”

Construction for the SBT began October 2015, with the actual trainer installation beginning October 2016. Construction for the trainer was completed May 26, 2017. The total cost for the new trainer, including the development of trainer and building construction, cost $7 million.

“This innovative trainer allows submarine crews to safely navigate through challenging environments in a realistic training scenario which closely emulates what they would actually see from the bridge of a submarine,” Training and Readiness Officer of Commander, Submarine Group 9 Cmdr. John Correll said. “This realistic trainer is vital to maintaining

proficiency and certification on a two-crew submarine, while one crew is assigned ashore.”

Four Submarine Bridge Trainers have been approved for construction throughout the fleet. The first trainer is located at the Naval Submarine School (NAVSUBSCOL) located in Groton, Connecticut, and was ready for training in August 2012.

The second trainer was built in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and was ready for training in October 2013. Trident Training Facility Bangor was the third site, and the fourth site will be King’s Bay, Georgia in 2020.

“This is the first guidedmissile (SSGN) and ballisticmissile (SSBN) SBT design; the sail and dome are larger than the two previous SBTs and the engineering development model,” Technical On-Site Agent for Naval Sea Systems Command Steve Stephenson said. “King’s Bay will begin construction of the same design next year, once the facilities are modified.

This is also the first SBT to receive the new laser projectors, which operate up to 30 times longer than the previous projectors with significantly less maintenance.”

SBT instructors were re-

quired to learn all of the SBT’s functions. Training included two classroom sessions, to familiarize themselves with the functions of the trainer, and three hands on training days, to apply the lessons learned. According to Chief Electronics Technician James Short, SBT instructor, the most beneficial training was when they ran the SBT in all modes with the Ohio’s Gold crew prior to the ribbon cutting, as it showed the trainers the systems limitation and gave in-depth, hands on training to both staff and the crew.

TRITRAFAC Bangor plans to have the Blue and Gold crews assigned to the guided-missile submarines USS Ohio (SSGN 726) and USS Michigan (SSGN 727) certified through the SBT this year. The 16 SSBN crews will certify in the SBT based on the needs of Commander, Submarine Squadron 17 and Commander, Submarine Squadron 19 along with various SSBN upgrade plans.

“This is by far the most advanced trainer that I have experienced at TRITRAFAC Bangor,” Fire Control Technician 2nd Class Christopher Goetz said, assigned to Ohio’s Gold Crew, the test submarine crew for the Submarine Bridge Trainer. “With

the 360-degree view, the vibrations you feel while on the bridge, the realistic wind and climate changes and the high tech binocualars that let you see into the distance, it really prepares you for being on a real submarine.”

Currently, Submariners use two separate trainers to get the experience and training necessary for certification: the Submarine Piloting and Navigation (SPAN) 2000 Trainer and the Virtual Environment Submarine Ship handling Trainer (VESUB). The SPAN Trainer equipment has representative controls, alarms, displays and indications of actual shipboard equipment, including the periscope, primary navigation plotting table, and a secondary plotting table, and the VESUB system consists of a head-mounted display, PC graphics (beyond entertainment) and automated environment data base generation. The new Submarine Bridge Trainer combines and expands upon these two trainers to allow for better communication between the bridge and the control center, in a much more realistic and advanced environment. The new trainer also allows commanding officers to fully participate in the team training.

NAWCTSD tours Recruit Training Command “

A leadership team from Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Research and Engineering Division (NAWCTSD), Orlando, Florida, toured Recruit Training Command May 31 through June 2, to gain a better understanding of recruit training.

NAWCTSD shares resources and leverages expertise in modeling, simulation and training for aviation, space, surface and subsurface platforms and ground vehicles and maintenance training with the Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, Army, Department of Justice and NASA. They are all part of the Florida Simulation Center and synergy is used to focus their research and development efforts on the practical application of these advanced technologies. Together they contain the largest concentration of simulation business in the world.

“We’ve been here for three days and I cannot express how impressed I am with the professionalism, the dedication and passion that the staff has here for turning these folks into real Sailors,” Director of Research and Engineering Mayard Zettler said.

“The mission for NAWCTSD is to provide training solutions to the U.S. Navy. This is what we’re about, providing the systems that these young Sailors have used to learn their trade.”

The group began their tour with Battle Stations 21 aboard USS Trayer (BST-21), a 210-foot Arleigh Burkeclass destroyer simulator, the largest in the Navy.

Battle Stations 21 is the capstone event that culminates eight weeks of boot camp training. Each recruit

must complete 17 scenarios during a 12-hour, overnight period. The scenarios encompass all training learned during boot camp from firefighting to preventing and stopping flooding in a ship compartment. There are also

casualty evacuations, watch standing, loading and unloading supplies, and line handling.

Later that evening, the group had the privilege to actually go through BST-21 with the recruits to get a first-

hand look at the scenarios.

“The young recruits’ commitment to everything and their dedication to service for our country is so impressive,” said John Owen, NAWCTSD. “All the training we saw and went through,

their willingness to help each other and work with each other, their courage, it was just amazing all week long.”

To see how recruits are trained in firefighting, the group toured the USS Chief, which has been in operation since 1990. Each recruit is given a basic orientation and starts with basic damage control. There are discussions about buoyancy, compartmentalization and how to find their way around the ship with the compartment identification number system. This training gives the recruits a basic understanding on why it is important to close a door or a hatch on board a ship.

The group was able to interact with recruits by attending the weekly pizza night for those recruits set to graduate the following day.

The guests also toured the USS Missouri, Small Arms Marksmanship Trainer (SAMT), where recruits learn to handle and fire the Navy’s standard issue M9 Berretta pistol and the Mossberg 500 12-gauge shotgun as well as the USS Wisconsin, a live-fire range.

Wrapping up their visit, the group attended a recruit graduation ceremony (PassIn-Review) where more than

900 recruits graduated from boot camp.

“We brought all of our Navy staff from NAWCTSD here so they can actually see the training systems that we have developed, designed, tested and evaluated and brought here to this particular training command and actually experience what the recruit trainers have along with the opportunity to go through some training side by side with them,” Senior Systems Engineer at NAWCTSD Jacqueline Foxx said.

“It was incredible. This was just fantastic and when we get back to NAWCTSD, I am certain that the people are all going to want to come out here.”

Boot camp is approximately eight weeks and all enlistees into the U.S. Navy begin their careers at the command.

Training includes physical fitness, seamanship, firearms, firefighting and shipboard damage control along with lessons in Navy heritage and core values, teamwork and discipline. About 30,000 to 40,000 recruits graduate annually from RTC and begin their Navy careers.

Florida governor, MCPON visit Iwo Jima on same day From USS Iwo Jima Public Affairs MAYPORT, FLA.

The amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) hosted two high-level dignitaries in one day as Florida Gov. Rick Scott and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Steven S. Giordano each visited the ship at her homeport of Naval Station Mayport, June 7.

Each held all-hands calls in which they thanked the crew for their efforts and recognized individual Sailors for their personal achievements.

During Gov. Scott’s morning all-hands call, he awarded the Florida Medal of Merit to Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Fuel) 3rd Class Andrew Miller and Airman David Barba for their actions during the Times Square attack on May 18. Miller and Barba provided first aid assistance to the victims of the attack, which claimed the lives of one woman and injured 22 others.

“Earlier this month, a disturbed individual made a ruthless decision,” Scott said.

would be the most military and veteran friendly state in the nation,” Scott said. “We have 1.5 million veterans that live in our cities and I am very appreciative of everybody that is currently and has served. As an enlisted Navy veteran myself, it is an honor to be with so many active duty military members here today, and I’d like to thank

each and every one of you for your service and sacrifice.”

Giordano also thanked the members of Iwo Jima for their service during a separate early afternoon all-hands call.

“You talk about one team that gets it done every day and knows what that means to one another; we know that is this crew,” Giordano said.

“Sometimes there are challenges out there, but it is obvious that all of you operate at an extremely high level, and on behalf of your chain of command, I want to say thank you for being those Sailors in our Navy.”

been working on trying to bolster up our capabilities to respond to spills, and historically we have provided successful support to the Coast Guard when it comes to spill response, using our motor vessel Puget,” Spill Response Program Manager Brian Wilson said. “Over the course of the past six months or so, we’ve been coordinating this exercise to come together today.

Meanwhile, the Navy operated a skimmer, performing open water skimming operations to recover the spilled fuel, while protecting Tillicum Village and the cove just south of it, enabling Puget Sound to re-open to unrestricted traffic.

“It’s about interoperability and making sure we all work together. I’m excited to hear the lessons learned about today, I know they will be important,” Commanding Officer of Naval Supply Systems Command, Fleet Logistics Center Puget Sound Capt.

Philippe Grandjean said.

“Spill response is something that we don’t take lightly.”

The Navy owns and maintains a large supply of spill response equipment through-

out their facilities in the Puget Sound area, and has a well trained full-time staff that that can rapidly respond to a spill, regardless of its source.

The Navy is a spill response resource in Puget Sound that can support other agencies as needed during oil spills in this area.

“The military components here in this area are an asset, and we can help with any spill,” On-scene Coordinator and Navy Region Northwest Oil Spill Program Manager Heather Parker said. “We’re trying to show how we can come together and help in the event of some kind of an incident, the more we can learn to work together, it’s really important.”

Responders practiced roles and tested their response capabilities, while learning new techniques and identifying areas for improvement.

“The ability to respond collaboratively and leverage each other’s capabilities makes for an effective response,” Buck said. “In the event that there actually is a spill in the future, it’s important that we have rehearsed, we know how to interact with each other, and that we can effectively and smoothly respond to any event that oc-

curs.”

Representatives of the state of Washington, the Department of Ecology and the Muckleshoot Indian tribe witnessed the exercise from a vessel near the scene, observing the Armed Forces abilities to assist in the event of a real-world spill in the area.

“The Sound is an environmentally sensitive area with a lot of endangered species.

With any vessel, there’s potential for some type of spill.

It’s important to protect our environment,” Buck said.

“What a great opportunity to work together as a joint force, if there’s one thing I’ve learned in 26 years in the United States Army, we’re much more effective when we work together and leverage the capabilities that each of us bring.”

The 104 foot long M/V Puget, built for the Navy in 1944, patrols the inland waters of Puget Sound, collecting debris and obstructions to navigation with a five-person crew and is based out of the Hiram M. Chittenden locks in Ballard, Washington.

Summer is coming to Hampton Roads. That means hot, humid weather and a long break from school for the kids. Everyone looks forward to summer break, but the extended time out of the classroom can lead to a loss of learning known as “summer slide.” It’s important for children to continue reading and engaging in enriching activities during the break in order to maintain their skills.

The good news is that the public libraries in Hampton Roads can help.

During summer, public libraries offer reading programs, or “challenges” to encourage children and teens to read during the school break.

The reading programs offer goal-based incentives and the chance to win prizes ranging from free books to age-appropriate toys to coupons for free treats from local restaurants and passes to local fun spots.

Libraries offer free programs for all ages year-round but increase their offerings during summer. Katie Liu of Yorktown will participate in the 60th Distinguished Young Women National Finals to be held June 29, 30 and July 1 at the Mobile Civic Center Theater in Mobile, Alabama.

Liu is one of 51 representatives competing for thousands of dollars in cash scholarships and the opportunity to represent the program as the Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2017. She is a 2017 graduate of Grafton High School and the daughter of Zhaoyan Liu and Xiuwei Che. Following her selection as the Distinguished Young Woman of Virginia, Liu be-

gan preparations for the National Finals competition, which will include evaluation in scholastics, interview, fitness, talent and self-expression.

During her two weeks in Mobile, Liu will participate in team building activities, complete community service projects, interact with the Gulf Coast community through various events and engage in many hours of rehearsal in preparation for the three-night scholarship competition.

“These young women have shown a work ethic and demonstrated commitment to being leaders in the areas of scholarship, leadership and talent,” said Kendra Haskins,

executive director for Distinguished Young Women. “We know the future is in good hands with these dedicated young ladies.”

If selected as the program’s overall winner, Liu will spend the next year representing Distinguished Young Women across the country through various appearances and promoting the program’s national outreach initiative of “Be Your Best Self.” The outreach program is designed to combat major issues facing children today including childhood obesity and high school drop out rates, as well as encourage young people to take an active interest in their communities through service.

Ways to help your children learn during the summer or anytime

It’s only natural that kids get excited for summer vacation. However, parents may be concerned about “summer brain drain,” which occurs when students lose the knowledge they gained during the school year.

Unfortunately, many children show learning losses when they return to school in the fall, and these summer setbacks are cumulative, resulting in increasing levels of learning loss over time, according to RAND research.

“Parents can keep minds sharp by creating fun summer learning opportunities at home,” says Dr. Clement Chau, director of learning for VTech and LeapFrog, home to a number of educational learning products.

To help families avoid summer setbacks, Chau is offering the following ideas and tips.

• Visit a library. Many libraries offer summer reading challenges which can prove to be great motivation to crack open a book. Enlist the expertise of librarians to help children find titles they’ll enjoy, and use the “five-finger” test to be sure your child has books at the proper reading level: read one page of a book; if there are more than five unknown words, have your child choose another book.

• Learn about a new topic. Has your child been collecting rocks when playing outdoors? Does he or she like to point out different shapes of clouds in the sky? Encourage children to research and learn more about the subjects that fascinate them. If they are passionate about a topic, they’ll be more likely to seek

Whether by plane, train or automobile, parents are on the search for ways to make family travel a little less stressful.

To help, Sandy Chang, mom of two and founder of SandyALaMode.com, is offering her five best travel hacks. These hacks won’t guarantee a tantrum-free trip, but they will help parents feel as prepared as possible for

• Save space in the suitcase. Pack a few essential clothing items that can easily be mixed and matched.

For example, nights can get chilly, so take one cute sweater that works well with all your child’s outfits. The same idea applies to shoes. Opt for neutral colored shoes that match everything, instead of multiple pairs to coordinate with each outfit.

• Pack snacks that can also serve as entertainment: Nothing can set off a massive

Norfolk, Beach eateries to get spotlight on TV show

An episode airing July 7 features a “two-for-one spot” in Norfolk, “where a bomb butcher stacks sandwiches by day and a chef firing up ramen and sticky wings takes over night.”

And an episode airing July 14 features a Norfolk restaurant and market “with Mexican specialties that you probably haven’t seen before.”

The episodes air at 9 p.m.

Fieri was in town in late April for a media event promoting his new eatery, Guy Fieri’s Smokehouse, at Waterside District.

Several Hampton Roads eateries will be featured on upcoming episodes of Guy Fieri’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.”

According to a Facebook post from The Dirty Buffalo in Norfolk, Fieri’s episode featuring the wing joint will air June 16.

A perusal of the Food Network’s website provides some hints of other spots where Fieri filmed.

In our world, East Beach is a quiet, planned community with little crime to speak of.

In the stories of the East Beach Writers Guild, though, the neighborhood is a hive of murder and mystery.

“I’ll be honest with you: That first book has six dead bodies,” said Sally Parrott, one of the guild’s founders.

The group, which started in the fall of 2013, recently published its second collection of short stories set in East Beach.

The series is called “By the Bay.” The first book came out in 2015 and has sold 450 copies, raising about $1,600 for charity.

The guild held a launch party for the second book recently and sold out the first run of 150 copies. Another run has come in.

The guild started in late 2013 after three Navy spouses – Parrott, Gina Buzby and Randi Koepf – discovered their mutual interest in writing.

At Koepf’s suggestion, they decided to form a club. Parrott sent an East Beach-wide invitation through a neighborhood email list.

East Beach Writers Guild members have written these two books of short stories.

Eight or nine people showed up to the first meeting a month later. The guild eventually grew to about a dozen, a mix of published authors and aspiring writers.

They met monthly for several years to talk about the craft and critique each other’s stories.

“One thing about writing is, it’s a very, very solitary profession, so it’s so wonderful to get together with other writers,” said Parrott, who writes “cozy mysteries” (where the violence happens off page) under the name Jayne Ormerod.

The timing was perfect for Pat Clark, a retired Navy commander who had recently ended a second career as a contractor. Just as he was thinking, “I’m going to do what I always wanted to do and write a book,” he got the email about the writers guild.

Parrott, who had written for an anthology called “Virginia is for Mysteries,” suggested having everyone in the group write a story about East Beach.

Clark is publishing his first novel in July, a political thriller called “The Monroe Decision.”

The stories in the second “By the Bay” collection aren’t as deadly – no new dead bodies, Parrott said, though there’s a continuation of one murder mystery.

But that wasn’t by design.

No one had a problem with the body count in the first book. They’re just stories, after all.

And as Parrott said with a smile, “Just for the record, in none of those six murder mysteries were residents of East Beach the killer.”

Tom was in high school.

He got a camera and went down and asked Paul Boesch (Houston promoter) if he could take pictures at ringside for a class project, and Paul allowed him to take pictures.

We would be the kids that hung around the office when we had an extra minute. ... He would always take us back to his office and talked wrestling. If there were anything extra to be done, we would be the ones to do it. Tom was 14 and taking pictures. I was 10, and they needed somebody to sell posters. I sold more posters. In one night I made $12, that’s a lot of money for a 10year old kid in 1973. Then they put me in the ring, and I sold a lot more from there.

I made so much money that they cut my commission from 25 cents to a dime because I sold too many posters, go figure.

they were doing commentary live each week for the TV show and needed an assistant to cue him when he was going in and out of breaks.

That became my job, so at 12 years old, I became an assistant director of the TV show. At 14 years old, I became a ring announcer when the regular announcer Boyd Peirce no showed due to very bad weather. They asked me to ring announce. I did, and I asked everyone to stand for the playing of our “natural anthem,” it’s on tape. I ended up the night with Superstar Billy Graham standing over me. He called me a punk kid, threatening to strangle me, because I had announced Jose Lothario the winner. I was scared to death. At 16, I began refereeing at some spot shows and at the age of 18, I was in the office, kind of running the place.

Yiorgio (Y): So Conrad, how did you and Tony Schiavone get together and decide to do the podcast “What Happen When With Tony Schiavone?”

Conrad Thompson (CT): I met Tony through Ric Flair.

We had Tony on our “Woooo Nation” podcast a couple of years ago, and I had his number. When I started to think about the success of Bruce’s show and how the numbers have grown because people are thirsty for the WWF/E stuff, I said you know this is only half of the story. The other half, WCW and the Crockett side of the story, the only right guy to do that with is Tony Schiavone. He was there from the beginning:

the WCW years, everything.

He was there for the good, the bad, and the ugly. This is the guy. He is a professional broadcaster; he is not overexposed. The Tony I saw at NWALegends Fest last year was witty and foulmouthed.

He really is the Bob Saget of professional wrestling. Everybody grew up with him being his or her dad, then you go to his stand-up comedy, and you’re shocked with what you hear.

Y: How have you been able to get Tony to open up more with his answers and be more forthcoming?

CT: I love that you ask the question that way. Tony has not changed, I have. Our debut show was Goldberg. I approached it as if I had Bruce in front of me and I did not.

I spent a week doing my research, really worked hard on it. We got a lot of info to ask, but I did not get a lot of info back.

Now Bruce and I spend a lot of time together, well over 1,000 hours. Tony and I have maybe spent 24 hours together. So my rapport with each one is different. And in reality, their jobs were different. Tony’s job was calling matches, and Bruce’s job was helping creative for everyone.

So I learned in time to ask questions in order to get Tony’s opinion, and he can say it was stupid if he wanted to.

Y: I have noticed that you and Tony are working closely with the Mid-Atlantic Gateway website (www.midatlanticgateway.com) and promoting the book “Four Horsemen: A Timeline His-

CT: Yes Dick Bourne and David Chappell are friends of ours and of our show and as the co-founders of the website, they help to keep the memories of Jim Crockett Promotions alive and the Four Horsemen book is a perfect companion to our podcast conversations. As a matter of fact, in honor of the book’s release, our episode 20 will be about the Four Horsemen.

Yiorgio’s note: Dick Bourne wrote “Four Horsemen: A Timeline History,” and I had the pleasure of talking to him on the phone the other day.

Y: What is the origin of Mid-Atlantic Gateway, what is it about, and who should be checking it out?

Dick Bourne (DB): The Mid-Atlantic Gateway is a website devoted to preserving the history and great memories of Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, primarily between the years 1973-1988, but we have posted about things going back as far as the 1950s. David Chappell and I publish the site, which is updated four, five times a week.

Wrestler George South told me once that when he discovered the Gateway, it was like he had discovered his own Noah’s Ark, and it was full of Mid-Atlantic Wrestling stuff.

That’s the way we look at it, too; a huge ark full of history and great memories from an era long gone. Wrestling will never be like it was back in the territory days. So we hope fans from that era will enjoy reliving the history and memories from our special territory, but also younger fans that want to learn more about some of the great names of the past, too.

Y: Any wow moments that made you and David Chappell proud to have created the Mid-Atlantic Gateway?

DB: The late Bob Windham, aka Blackjack Mulligan, loved the site and we became friends with him in those years before his death.

Jim Ross told Bruce Mitchell during an interview on the “Ross Report” that he loved the stories on the site and that we were an “icon on his desktop,” which we thought was pretty cool! Bob Caudle, who was the soundtrack of my youth and young adulthood watching wrestling, one of the great wrestling broadcasters ever, is a big supporter and advocate of the site, and that is special to us. He introduced us when David and I were inducted into the MidAtlantic Wrestling Legends Hall of Heroes in Charlotte in 2016. That was just amazing, and something we would have never thought could

happen. James J. Dillon is a big supporter of what we do there, as is Les Thatcher and others.

Y: What prompted you to write “Four Horsemen: ATimeline History” and why should people buy it?

DB: Right alongside those years in the mid-70s when I first fell in love with wrestling, the mid-1980s during the Dusty Rhodes booking era of Jim Crockett Promotions was one of my favorite periods ever in wrestling.

Most of that was due to the incredible run of the Four Horsemen during a three and a half year period between 1985 and 1988. It was just magic. I only write about, either on the site or in the books, what was really special to me from that time, and so the Horsemen were a natural topic I have wanted to write about for a long time.

I had always wanted to capture their entire history in a timeline that would hit every major development, angle, title change, etc. during their entire 13-year run. And so that’s what I did. It’s a detailed history of those major points in a month-by-month, year-by-year, timeline. It covers all 12 distinct versions of the Horsemen over three eras: the Crockett era, the Early WCW era, and the Monday Nitro era. I also talk about how they all came together to begin with, their legacy, and there are lots of sidebar discussions of topics and people on the periphery. Lots of charts and over 40 photographs, many taken in the Norfolk and Richmond area.
