USS John S. McCain collides with merchant ship

The guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) has arrived at Changi Naval Base following a collision with the merchant vessel Alnic MC while underway east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore on Aug. 21.
The collision was reported at 6:24 a.m. Japan Standard Time. Significant damage to the hull resulted in flooding to nearby compartments, including crew berthing, machinery, and communications rooms. Damage control efforts by the crew halted further flooding. There are currently 10 Sailors missing and five injured. Four of the injured
were medically evacuated by a Singapore Armed Forces helicopter to a hospital in Singapore for non-life threatening injuries. The fifth injured Sailor does not require further medical attention. A family assistance center has been established. Families who do not live on base should call 011-81-46-8161728 (international); fami-
lies who live on base should call 315-243-1728 (DSN). Search and rescue efforts continue in coordination with local authorities. The Republic of Singapore Fearless-class patrol ships RSS Gallant (97), RSS Resilience (82), and Singaporean Police Coast Guard vessel Basking Shark (55) are in the area rendering assistance. Additionally, MH-60S
helicopters and MV-22 Ospreys from the amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) are in the area providing search and rescue assistance. Alnic MC is a Liberianflagged 600-foot oil and chemical tanker with a gross tonnage of 30,000. The incident will be investigated.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) welcomed USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) Aug. 5 in advance of its six-month Planned Incremental Availability. This shipyard is contributing 211,000 of the availability’s 428,000 mandays, with Ship’s Force, Alteration Installation Teams (AITs), and contractor work comprising the rest. Major jobs on the carrier include nuclear special emphasis work, as well as mechanical and electrical improvements. With the availability not scheduled to officially begin until Sept. 17, that allows the project team a 40-day “early start.” “The key is getting all services and trailers loaded on, getting the [propulsion] plants cooled down, and starting the critical path work jobs,” Project Superintendent

More than 7,000 Sailors from the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group (GHWBCSG) arrived to their homeport Aug. 21. Led by Commander, Carrier Strike Group 2 Rear Adm. Kenneth Whitesell, the GHWBCSG is comprised of flagship USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) with embarked squadrons of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8, CSG-2 staff, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 22 staff and ships.
