U.S. Northern Command positioned to respond following Hurricane Florence From North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command Public Affairs PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, COLO.

United States Northern Command, its component and subordinate commands, Department of Defense partners, the military services and the National Guard are actively supporting the Federal Emergency Management Agency, states and local partners in response to the recently-downgraded

Hurricane Florence. “We have quite literally surrounded the affected area with DoD capability that will be critical in hours and days following the storm’s impact. Secretary Mattis’ guidance to me is clear: We are anticipating the needs,” said Gen. Terrence J. O’Shaughnessy, North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command commander. “We are moving forward under our own authorities to be able to respond as soon as a

request is made.” Below is an updated summary of DoD’s support to FEMA, state and local partners: USNORTHCOM is positioned to provide support, as requested, via: sea, air and land. It has identified a total of nine military installations as FEMA staging areas for equipment and relief supplies including: Fort AP Hill and Fort Lee, Virginia; Fort Bragg and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina; North Auxiliary Airfield and Shaw Air

Force Base, South Carolina; Fort Gordon, Georgia; Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama; and Dover Air Force Base, Delaware. U.S. Army North Commander Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan has been named USNORTHCOM’s lead component commander and will serve as the Joint Force Land Component commander. Air Force Northern is the lead component for USNORTHCOM for search and rescue, and has postured approximately 20 helicopters and crews for this effort. Pearce MH-60 Sea Hawk helicopters from the “Dusty Dogs” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 7, attached to Carrier Strike Group 12 and the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), are recalled to Naval Station Norfolk, where they will be better postured to provide land-based rotary wing Defense Support of Civil Authorities if required in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence. Abraham Lincoln remains underway after Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command ordered all U.S. Navy ships in the Hampton Roads area to sortie on Sept. 10, ahead of the storm, which continues to bring high winds and rain to the Mid-Atlantic coast.

The U.S. Navy community remembered 9/11 and honored those who lost their lives with somber tributes held across the United States and around the globe on Tuesday as people paused to commemorate the events that changed the world. Special ceremonies were held on the three naval ships that bear the names of the 9/11 crash sites. One of the commemorations was on the USS New York (LPD 21), named in honor of New York City where American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the World Trade Center. “It’s really difficult to pause and take a break and for us to remember,” said Capt. Brent DeVore, commanding officer of USS New York said during the ceremony. “But that is precisely what we must do ... We must never allow 9/11 to simply be a day when the flag flies at half-mast.
