Five emergency medicine (EM) physician residents from Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) embarked on the Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) in support of relief efforts for those affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, as part of their residency training. Comfort was to receive four staff emergency physicians from Navy Medicine East when the ship was activated. Cmdr. John Devlin, the residency program director at NMCP, and the medical director of casualty receiving aboard Comfort, presented the idea to take two staff physicians and five residents, giving more physician manpower and allowing residents hands-on learning by executing the mission. The DOD is supporting the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the lead federal agency, in helping those affected by Hurricane Maria to minimize suffering and is one component of the overall whole-of-government response effort.

For one U.S. Navy emergency room doctor, his upbringing and youth experiences were huge factors in determining what course he would take in his future. Even as a child, he was enamored with medicine and the way the doctors interacted with their patients. “I was always fascinated with the way the physicians and nurses were able to kind of blend science and humanity,” Lt. Cmdr. Jonathan Auten said, the associate emergency residency director at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, in Virginia. Auten said he remembers frequently going to the hospital with his father, to visit people with illnesses. “My father was a preacher, and when people in our church were sick, we would always go into the hospital and visit them,” Auten said. “I think medicine is one of those unique specialties where you just can’t be humanist, you just » See DOCTOR | A7

Navy Region Mid-Atlantic will hold the annual retiree summit & career fair at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story’s Rockwell Hall Gym from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3. The annual event brings together a full range of guest speakers, vendors, medical representatives and prospective employers to one location to give transitioning service members, military retirees, family members, and surviving spouses the most up to date information on pay, benefits and legislative initiatives. The summit kicks off with remarks at 10 a.m. from keynote speaker Ms. Carrie Ann Alford, Director of Policy & Planning for Virginia Department of Veterans Services, Naval Medical Center
Portsmouth, Veteran’s Affairs (VA), DFAS and TRICARE. A town hall-style panel discussion will follow providing information on policies and issues affecting retirees. Naval Medical Center Portsmouth will staff a health and information fair. Participants can also expect more than 40 employers, colleges and universities supporting the job and educational fair. Representatives from military, federal and community organizations will be on site to provide information about topics of interest to the retiree community to include the Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS). Patrons will also be treated to an MWR showcase, to include informational tables, interactive displays and coupons from community recreation programs, marinas & sailing, Navy getaways, movie theaters, golf, bowling and more. Free food sampling on site as well.
