Joint Base Langley-Eustis teamed with the local community to host Evening Under the Stars, a military appreciation event in Hampton, May 10, 2017.

The event, which was open to military spouses from all branches, aimed to thank spouses for their support within the military community.

“The Hampton Roads area has a large contingency of military spouses, so we found it important to recognize the contributions of our military spouses,” said Dawn Teagle, 633rd Force Support Squadron Military and Family Readiness flight chief. “With that in mind, what better way to do so than a joint appreciation event where

they can come and be pampered with massages, manicures and facials, along with a plethora of vendors who are here to show their support?”

In addition to showing gratitude, the event was also designed to help military families feel a part of the community, as it featured local services, upcoming events and seasonal activities.

“I’ve never been to this event, but I’ve always wanted to come,” said Victoria Garoutte, spouse of U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Jaron Garoutte, 30th Intelligence Squadron signal intelligence NCO in charge. “I love that everyone here is a fellow military spouse and all of the information being given out is relevant to my life.”

MCAHC PHARMACY CUTS HOURS, SHORTENS WAIT TIMES

In today’s military, units are constantly looking to make improvements and achieve growth in customer care. This is no different for the medical professionals at McDonald Army Health Center at Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

Although the pharmacy has shortened its operating hours, now closing at 5 p.m. each day rather than the previous 6 p.m., pharmacists and technicians have increased the amount of patients they provide services to.

Using a new queuing system in the main pharmacy, U.S. Army Maj. Adam Resnick, McDonald Army Health Center Department of Pharmacy Service chief, and his staff analyzed data regarding the times of day that beneficiaries were utilizing the pharmacy. With that information, the team balanced the limiting factors in their daily operations.

“One of the things we learned from the new system was we were having large amounts of patients come in at lunch time and we wouldn’t be able to take care of that patient flow until one or two hours down the line,” said Resnick. “Also, more patients were coming in the mornings rather than the afternoons. So by closing an hour earlier, we’re able to rearrange our shifts so we’ve

With seven outpatient pharmacists staffing four different sites, MCAHC staff members provide approximately 30,000 prescriptions each month. In addition to their pharmacies, MCAHC personnel also provide logistics support to the clinic at Fort Story, as they work to expand their services for beneficiaries.

ically decreased,” said Resnick. “We’re gone from roughly 76 percent of our patients serviced within 30 minutes to now 98 percent within 30 minutes. Our team’s morale is even higher now because all of us are working together as a team to help our patients and service them better.”

To provide customers with swift service, Dr. Jessica Pruitt, MCAHC lead pharmacist, recommends patients pay close attention to the options on the queuing system in the lobby.

“With the new system, you scan your ID card, so in the back we can actually see who is in the lobby--we have their information so we can go into the system before they even arrive to the window, and in a lot of cases their medications are already ready before we actually call them,” said Pruitt. “It’s important to ensure beneficiaries are scanning the ID of the patient, not the sponsor ’s ID or the ID of the individual authorized to pick up a prescription on their behalf, such as a parent or guardian.”

According to Pruitt, patients most likely to see wait times longer than 30 minutes are those who bring in handwritten prescriptions, rather than using the electronic prescription or telephone refill options.

“Call-in refills allow us to already have prescriptions ready for you at the refill pharmacy next to military sales in the Post Exchange,” said Pruitt. “Electronic prescriptions give us the ability to analyze prescriptions while patients are driving here from their civilian provider ’s officer, rather than us having to look at a hard copy and deciphering handwriting.”

Though the hours have shortened in the pharmacy, there’s a lot going on behind-the-scenes where technicians and pharmacists are ensuring they are providing necessary care to patients and storing all medications properly.

“Safety is our number one priority, so when we process prescriptions it’s a lot more than just sticking pills in a bottle,” said Pruitt. “We need to make sure it’s the right patient, dose, frequency and timing.”

As a reminder, all pharmacies on the installation close at noon on the third Thursday of each month for training.

Pharmacies are also closed on Sundays and holidays.

TRADOC commander commissions new lieutenants

College graduations are typically events where friends and family gather to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduate over the past several years. For eight ROTC cadets from the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, their graduation held more significance, as they also commissioned into the U.S. Army.

U.S. Army Gen. David Perkins, commanding general of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, was the guest speaker for the event, giving the soon-to-be second lieutenants advice on how to be effective leaders.

“Your subordinates don’t really care what your grade point average is, what your bank account looks like or what family you came from,” said Perkins.

“Your subordinates are going to grade you by what you do.”

The cadets pledged the Oath of Office, required by U.S. Code prior to receiving their commission. Following the oath, family members were invited on stage to pin the new rank onto the newly appointed U.S. Army second lieutenants.

During the ceremony, Lt. Col. James Kimbrough, College of William & Mary military science professor, spoke of the traditions and history of military support at the college, dating back more than 300 years, to include faculty, staff, students and alumni who have served in the nation’s military forces. He expressed his confidence in the new officers and their ability to continue that tradition of leadership.

“Through the years, College of William & Mary has a legacy of graduates becoming military leaders,” said Kimbrough. “Having spent the last couple of years working very closely with these cadets, I

In honor of the continued tradition, the newly commissioned lieutenants, and per tradition they presented a silver coin to an enlisted member, rendering their first salute.

With the ceremony complete, the new lieutenants were officially among the newest members of the U.S. Army Officer Corps.

“It’s an honor to be here and share this very special day, not only for these commissioned lieutenants, but quite honestly for the Army and for this great institution,” said Perkins. “The way we’ve built this Army for 242 years, and the way that it is now the envy of every Army in the world, is we build it sergeant by sergeant, private by private, and lieutenant by lieutenant. We don’t go out and buy an army, we build an army.”

With their ROTC days now behind them, the new lieutenants will face different challenges as they join various units across the Army, but will all soon have the distinct honor of leading their fellow Soldiers and continuing the traditions built before them.

The Airmen, who make up JBLE’s 633rd Security Forces Squadron Emergency Services Team, were testing a tryout course for fellow defenders to go through, in order to join their elite group.

The team went through the course prior to unveiling it, to ensure it would properly test SFS members’ abilities to react swiftly with little to no error in specialized scenarios, including hostage situations, barricaded suspects and active shooters.

“The Emergency Services Team is the Air Force equivalent to a civilian SWAT (Special Weapons and tactics) Team,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. George Daggett, 633rd SFS swing shift flight chief.” First things first, as a ready response force, we are a life-saving organization.

We do that through utilizing all of our tactics; speed, surprise and violence of action to save as many lives as possible.”

Testing the tryout course also allowed the members

to provide feedback before it was released.

“I think it went pretty well. We will probably do a few adjustments to better suit our guys at this unit because some of it wasn’t necessary,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Gary Good, 633rd SFS training instructor. “We are here to shape and guide them in a tactical environment.

Whether it be their shooting platforms, weapon discipline or communication, the tryout will benefit them.”

For Daggett, the most qualified candidates are the ones who have the heart and motivation to make it through the tryout.

“Big picture, the tryout is meant to physically, mentally and emotionally test any candidate that wants to be a member of the team,” said Daggett. “What we’re really looking for is heart, motivation and the spark inside of them that you can’t teach. We can make someone physically fit, a better marksmen and we can teach them tactics, but we can’t teach them to want it and push through when it hurts, when they’re tired and uncomfortable.”

For interested 633rd SFS defenders attempting to try out for the small, specialized team, the course will consist of evaluations like gear-check, pool confidence, modified Marine Fitness Test and a ruck march from the Shellbank Fitness Center to Combat Arms Training facility. The course will be offered every quarter.

As part of the Army’s Adopt-A-School program, U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the 2nd Staff and Faculty Company, U.S. Army Transportation School at Joint Base Langley-Eustis have “adopted” Mary L. Passage Middle School in Newport News.

The Adopt-A-School program aims to increase public awareness regarding the Army’s mission and to foster good community relations through contributing military resources and services to schools; nurturing the intellectual, emotional, social and physical growth of children in the local area.

According to Dana Madison, Mary L. Passage Middle School liaison, the mentoring, provided by the Soldiers, can make a difference in a child’s life by improving discipline, encouraging social interactions and potentially boosting their grades.

“It is important for these students to interact because they need to see someone who is pushing for their success,” said Madison. “They need someone that can guide them and give them a different perspective.”

To further their contributions, the Soldiers participate in a weekly Lunch Buddies mentoring session.

These lunch sessions allow Soldiers to provide a positive role model for students who may have issues at home, as well as an open-ear, allowing students to talk about their home and school life and other day-to-day stressors they may have.

“They get comfortable with us because they see a fresh-face without their teachers or parents around, so they open up a little bit more to us,” said U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Shalayne Tucker, 2nd Staff and Faculty Co. cargo handling division team chief and instructor writer. “By opening up to us, they provide us with a better understanding of how we can

help them navigate through the issues they may be having right now.”

Tucker believes the program not only benefits the students, but the Soldiers as well, allowing them to engage with the community and see the impact of their work.

Unit and school leadership are scheduled to sign an official Memorandum of Understanding on May 24, 2017, setting forth a plan to make the 2nd Staff and Faculty Company’s presence within the school a more common occurrence. Gate Closure

The LaSalle gate will have limited operations, May 15-19, 2017. The LaSalle gate will be open for inbound traffic from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. only and will reopen for outbound traffic from 3p.m. to 6 p.m. only. The gate will be closed to all traffic during times not specified in this message. Additionally, the LaSalle Gate will be closed on May 20 and May 21, 2017. The Joint Base Langley-Eustis Family Child Care Program is looking for child care providers. They are searching for those interested in a professional, portable career that will allow those to stay at home and run a home-based business.

The program is available for children ages two weeks to 12 years old. Child care providers must be at least 18 years old be able to read and speak English, be in good health, and willing to undergo a background check.
