From refugee to Airman

In the country of Liberia, a good day and bad day are extreme opposites – a difference of children playing in the street and going to war.

For locals like Christiana Katta, war zone experience came at an early age.

She was just 2 years old when she and her family picked up all their belongings and moved every time war came near.

Sometimes they’d walk for days at a time.

After years of living this life, finally in 2005, Katta and her family decided to leave their country and move to the U.S. Now in the U.S. Air Force, Airman 1st Class Christiana Katta, 633rd Inpatient Squadron Labor and Delivery medical technician, reflects on life experiences, which made her who she is today.

“We were scared to live in our own country,” said Katta, who came to the U.S. with her family as a refugee. “We always saw on TV, the life of Americans.

It was the American dream; the big house, the two kids and the dog. We said, ‘one day we will achieve that.’”

However, there were many obstacles for Katta and her family.

“My mom came as a single mom,” said Katta. “We were foreign people, uneducated. Our situation was always a struggle. The whole culture was new for us, our accents were different — they were stronger and deeper.”

According to Katta, she also personally struggled with staying true to herself. She had difficulty trying to honor her culture while blending in with the U.S. “I didn’t want to be African at one point,” said Katta. “I used to tell people I was Jamaican because that seemed more acceptable than being from one of the poorest countries in the world.”

Eventually, Katta came to accept her herself, using her experience as a young refugee to become a stronger person.

According to Katta, going through those hardships made everything else seem easy. Even on her worst days, she remembers making it through what life threw her family’s way.

Thankful for the chance for a brighter future and in hopes of giving back to the country that provided her family the scarce commodity of safety during war, Katta decided to enlist in the U.S. Air Force.

“This is the first place I lived where I didn’t have to run or move,” said Katta.

“A part of me felt like I owed this to the U.S. I also thought I had adapted well to the culture at this point and wanted my citizenship. It all went into play; I could get an education, earn my citizenship and have a stable career.”

As a member of the labor and delivery department, Katta said the biggest part of adjusting to her new job is the long work hours, but those hours don’t compare to the honor of caring for babies. Katta is usually found with a smile on her face, as she cares for newborns that she knows will have a brighter start than her own.

“This place can take its toll on a person, but she’s always excited to do her job,” said Airman 1st Class

Jovanna Garretson, 633rd IPTS medical technician. “She’s a very strong person to be able to go through all that and still want to care for others and speak her mind.”

For Katta, surviving a tough childhood and enduring a lot of emotional pain has given her a need to help others. She wants to give back, and is thankful that she gets to do that every day in a career and job that she finds meaningful.

“I love being a part of the Air Force,” said Katta. “I’m really excited to see where I can go with the tools the Air Force has given me.”

According to Katta, it’s important to share her story so that people know no matter what background they come from or struggles they went through, they can still make a difference in their life. For her, she was able to make that difference in her life by joining the U.S. Air Force.

“A part of me is scared sometimes to tell my story because I don’t want anybody to pity me,” said Katta. “I don’t want to be treated differently or looked at differently, but in a sense all of this has given me a voice and a story to tell.”

Air Force EOD trains to increase readiness By 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs Explosives Ordinance Disposal technicians from around the U.S. Air Force participated in Operation Llama Fury 3.0, an EOD-specific exercise, Aug. 7-11, 2017, at Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

Throughout the five-day event, EOD Airmen from Air Combat Command, Global Strike Command and Air Mobility Command, as well as a local Police Bomb Squad from Norfolk, Virginia, standardized EOD tactics, techniques

and procedures through exercises that mimicked situations they could face at home or during overseas contingency missions.

“The EOD mission is to neutralize whatever explosive threat presents itself and endangers lives,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Taylor Saum, 633rd CES EOD member and OLF 3.0 exercise coordinator. “This event presents numerous EOD challenges in situations that may not be routine for U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. the participants. Llama Fury provides an excellent measure of each EOD team’s current capability, and allows our community to share best practices.”

The evaluations, or round robin activities, encompassed identifying, safely rendering and disposing conventional and chemical ordinances as well as improvised explosive devices, which they also had to collect evidence of.

After the teams rotated through the scenarios, they applied what they learned to work together in the culminating event, the crucible.

Staff Sgt. Timothy Donnan, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance disposal team leader, described the crucible as a gauntlet of tests, which mirrored wartime missions as it tied the week’s lessons into one night operation.

“Low level is a condition that we like to try travel in when at war, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan being that night gives us the element of surprise,” said Donnan. “Just like in every kind of capability, even when driving, things are a lot different when you do them at night, and we want make sure we’re always ready for that.”

According to Tech. Sgt. Isiah

Armstrong, 23rd CES EOD quality assurance and training section chief, OLF 3.0 will provide far-reaching benefits for more than those who attended.

“I thought this was a great way to get them training on a scenario that’s very possible, but not a lot of technicians have come across within the career field.

They learned a lot to take back to their units and integrate into their training programs,” said Armstrong. “Across the career field we now can spread this knowledge and become better and provide safety and security for military as well as civilian populations.”

As for civilian safety involving the finding of UXOs, especially in the local area, the devices are dangerous no matter what state they’re in and EOD technicians or local bomb squads should handle the potential danger that may impact the local area.

“At some point Virginia has either been a battlefield or a bombing range so there were many UXOs in the community,” said Donnan, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance disposal team leader. “Civil War, Revolutionary War and modern day UXOs were still found in this area, so it’s very important to get the word out that we are here.”

Oh buoy! Soldiers anchor vessel for hurricane season

The 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) conducted hurricane preparation exercises at Third Port at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Aug. 22, 2017.

With hurricane season on Virginia’s heels, Soldiers assigned to the 7th Trans.

Bde. (Ex.) worked together towing and rigging a Landing Craft Utility vessel in preparation for severe weather that could impact Third Port’s 60 vessels.

Senn led the Soldiers through each phase of rigging the vessel out near the James River Reserve Fleet, helping to prepare them for possible weather situations, whether downrange or at home station.

“We like to live by the motto, ‘train as you would fight,’” said U.S. Army Capt.

Third Port offers a unique training environment due to the isolated areas around it. As a result, Soldiers can practice providing safe harbor for the watercraft fleet in a deep-water port, lessening the impact on the 40-acre pier complex.

the skills needed to connect the vessel to the buoy. Creating more complex training situations allows Soldiers to practice completing the task through various environmental factors.

“By conducting these rehearsal exercises, we can validate the concept for the vessel evacuation plan,” said

94 FS takes to the skies for Red Flag 17-4

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -The 94th Fighter Squadron from Joint Base LangleyEustis, Va., has taken to the skies for the first time as part of Red Flag 17-4 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., completing training on the bombing and gunnery ranges of the Nevada Test and Training Range.

While in the air with multiple types of attack, fighter and command and control aircraft from August 14 to 25, 2017 the 94th FS plans to perfect their skills on defensive and offensive counter-air operations. While additionally increasing their ground launch procedures and mission planning with Airmen from the squadron.

“For a lot of Airmen in the 94th Fighter Squadron and 94th and 27th Aircraft maintenance units this is their first time coming to Red Flag,” said Lt. Col. Habu Young, 94th Fighter Squadron commander. “The ability to plan and execute a mission, not only with

other airframes, but with other branches of the military and our coalition partners from Singapore and Saudi Arabia, isn’t an experience that you can get on a daily basis back at Langley. Being here at Red Flag gives us the first exposure to a large force exercise that is similar to combat operations.”

Red Flag, is a realistic combat training exercise involving the air forces of the United States and its allies, and is coordinated at Nellis AFB. It is one of a series of advanced training programs administered by the United States Air Force Warfare Center and Nellis and executed through the 414th Combat Training Squadron.

For pilots flying as their first Red Flag, its gives them the opportunity to exercise skills that they otherwise would not have, actual air to air combat and ground target elimination. Being able to test and utilize these skills, gives the Squadron the leading edge in a real combat scenario.

exercise is very important for a fighter pilot, especially for younger pilots, as it gives them the opportunity to work with and learn from other airframes, services, coalition nations and systems in a contested environment.

“The exercise drives home the importance of mission planning and how to effectively and efficiently develop a sound tactical game plan with people we simply do not have the capability to train with at home station,” said Flash. “The threat replication at Red Flag also allows you to execute that game plan in the air and then highlight strengths and weaknesses of that plan. “ Red Flag was established in 1975 as one of the initiatives directed by General Robert J. Dixon, then commander of Tactical Air Command, to better prepare our forces for combat. Tasked to plan and control this training, the 414th Combat Training Squadron’s mission is to maximize the combat readiness, capability and survivability of participating units by providing realistic training in a combined air, ground, space and electronic threat environment while providing for a free exchange of ideas between forces.

Showcasing excellence: The “Iron Dawg� champions

On a daily basis, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Jeffrie Kennedy, 633rd Security Forces Squadron military working dog handler, and his partner, Toni, 633rd SFS MWD, work hard to keep Joint Base Langley-Eustis safe.

This hard work and dedication led them to place ďŹ rst in the “Iron Dawgâ€? competition hosted by Naval Air Station Oceana, July 31, 2017. “We had a few weeks in advance to practice for the competition,â€? said Kennedy. “But even so, we’re always ready. We always practice here within the kennels, between each other or with different bases.â€?

At home station, they usually work at the search pit, inspect vehicles, patrol, and respond to alarms and emergencies, but for the competition, they were given four different challenges.

The ďŹ rst challenge was a three-mile run, and the second was basic obedience coupled with a tactical obedience course with obstacles. “The third challenge was detection, which I think is the bread and butter of our job,â€? said Kennedy of the task that tested their ability to ďŹ nd bombs in the quickest and most proďŹ cient way.

The fourth and ďŹ nal challenge was patrol work, where the dog’s ability to attack a suspect with controlled aggression was challenged.

According to Kennedy, events like this provide him with the opportunity to see how other handlers train

and work together, allowing them to learn from one another, and share techniques and ideas. “A lot people don’t understand what it takes to be a dog handler,� said Tech Sgt. Jared Johnson, 633rd SFS kennel master. “Some people have this idea that you can just show up, grab a dog and go to work. Being a dog handler takes a lot of training, bonding and behind the scenes work that the average person doesn’t see.�

For Kennedy, working with his MWD to protect the people and assets of JBLE is rewarding, but takes diligence and patience. “Me and my dog can work together and if we have a bad ďŹ ve minutes with each other, he forgets about it ten minutes later and we press forward,â€? said Kennedy. “Meanwhile, people can hold grudges long after an incident.â€?

However, Kennedy explains that not being able to talk with Toni like a human can be challenging, but through constant drill and rehearse, they overcome communication barriers enabling them to better accomplish the MWD mission. “Within our career ďŹ eld we are very competitive; from the guy standing at the gate, to our most seasoned patrolman and to our leadership—that’s why we can do the things we do,â€? said Johnson. “When we have a guy like Kennedy and his MWD get ďŹ rst place, that’s huge for us because he gets to carry the banner for a little bit and showcase a capability that every Department of Defense installation has, but he showed up and excelled. Our senior leadership is very proud of him.â€?

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -The 94th Fighter Squadron falls under the 1st Fighter Wing at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., but while the airmen are deployed, the 94th FS brings together Airmen from all squadrons to make up the team.

This effort of collaboration of the 1st Fighter Wing Airmen and the 192nd Fighter Wing Airmen, allows the squadron as a whole to operate as If it were in a deployed location. The exercise is vital for the advancement of Raptor tactics, as well as preparing not only the pilots, but also the maintenance groups to bring the fight to the enemy.

Service member centers DoD initiates process to elevate U.S. Cyber support readiness one family at a time Command to unified

Airmen and Soldiers of Joint Base Langley-Eustis commit to ensuring the warfighter is supported through various mission sets every day. However, if morale is low, or if there are issues in their personal lives, that support is prone to suffer.

The Airmen and Family Readiness Center at Langley Air Force Base and Army Community Services at Fort Eustis, aim to help military members and their families avoid such issues by providing tools and support, allowing them to better perform the task at hand.

“Our goal is to support military members and their families with navigating the challenges of an expeditionary military lifestyle,” said Dawn Teagle, 633rd FSS military and family readiness flight chief. “We provide our services from the moment a service member enters the military through retirement and beyond.”

Opportunities offered by the AFRC and ACS include events for spouses of deployed service members, socials, job fairs and more. These activities are open to anyone with a government-issued ID from any branch of service.

Both organizations also hold workshops

and classes to help individuals traverse through the challenges that come with a military life. Some of the activities provided include cooking classes, a workshop on what to expect when having a newborn and how to make military separation an easier process.

While each agency offers group activities, both facilities also offer oneon-one consultations for more in-depth questions and issues an individual may encounter.

The centers also take advantage of being a part of a joint base as they provide members of each installation the opportunity to participate in a wider array of classes and events.

“It would be a disservice to everyone if, at a joint base, we offered the exact same thing to both set of customers,” said Havelis. “If that were the case, you would not be getting any kind of diversity.”

To keep the classes diverse, each center also holds at least one different class or workshop every week. Additionally, the AFRC and the ACS are always accepting new ideas for ways to help service members maintain readiness.

WASHINGTON — At the direction of the president, the Defense Department on Friday initiated the process to elevate U.S. Cyber Command to a unified combatant command.

“This new unified combatant command will strengthen our cyberspace operations and create more opportunities to improve our nation’s defense,” President Donald J. Trump said in a written statement.

The elevation of the command demonstrates the increased U.S. resolve against cyberspace threats and will help reassure allies and partners and deter adversaries, the statement said. The elevation also will help to streamline command and control of time-sensitive cyberspace operations by consolidating them under a single commander with authorities commensurate with the importance of those operations and will ensure that critical cyberspace operations are adequately funded, the statement said.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is examining the possibility of separating U.S. Cyber Command from the National Security Agency, and is to announce his recommendations at a later date.

New Air Force Space Operations Directorate achieves operating capability WASHINGTON (AFNS) — The Air Force selected the senior civilian and mobilization assistant for the deputy chief of staff for Space Operations directorate, or “AF/A11,” Aug. 17, 2017. Mr. Shawn Barnes will serve as the assistant deputy chief of staff for Space Operations, and Maj. Gen. Pamela Lincoln has been named as the Mobilization assistant to the deputy chief of staff for Space Operations.

“Mr. Barnes and Maj. Gen. Lincoln are experienced leaders who will provide the vision and direction for our new Space Operations Directorate,” said Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson. “This is one more element of the plan to ensure our space forces are organized, trained, and equipped to prevail in any conflict.”

The initial cadre of the A11 has been identified and assigned, consisting of 43 military members, government civilians, and contractors. These professionals have formed the core of the organization and will begin initial operating capability Aug. 21, 2017.

The A11 will be a strong and vocal advocate for space capabilities inside the Air Force and with our national security, commercial, and international partners.

“The A11 will be key to ensuring we link combatant commander and service space requirements with our

The command reached full operational capability Oct. 31, 2010, but it is still growing and evolving. The command is concentrating on building its Cyber Mission Force, which should be complete by the end of fiscal year 2018, he said.

The force is expected to consist of almost 6,200 personnel organized into 133 teams. All of the teams have already reached initial operational capability, and many are actively conducting operations. The force incorporates reserve component personnel and leverages key cyber talent from the civilian sector.

“This decision means that Cyber Command will play an even more strategic role in synchronizing cyber

capabilities,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein, the joint chief most responsible for military space forces. “We must ensure our space forces have the tools necessary to operate in any environment, defend our systems, and provide our joint force with vital space capabilities to remain the most responsive, agile and lethal on the planet.”

This is one of several key initiatives the Air Force is pursuing to adapt its operations, processes and organizational structure to reflect the reality that space is a warfighting domain. To outpace emerging threats, the Air Force is also instituting a new space warfighting concept of operations, changing its space force training model, streamlining its acquisition processes, and designing more resilient and survivable space systems.

Principal defense space advisor role continues, supported by joint personnel At the Defense Department level, the secretary of the Air Force will continue to serve as the principal space advisor to the secretary of Defense over the next year, giving the Air Force and DOD leadership time to revalidate the current approach. As the principal advisor, Wilson has responsibilities to guide and advocate for space-related programs across all services and defense agencies. A staff comprised of joint personnel, to include Army and Navy representatives, will support her in this role and assist her in addressing each services’ space operations, acquisitions and spacerelated equities.

“While we are integrating and normalizing space on the Air Staff, we are also strengthening the integrated service staff supporting the principal DOD space advisor role so that major issues are addressed, operations and acquisition is streamlined and every service is heard when it comes to space,” said Wilson in a June 16, 2017 press release regarding her PDSA role.

Cybercom already has been performing many responsibilities of a unified combatant command. The new command will be the central point of contact for resources for the department’s operations in the cyber domain and will serve to synchronize cyber forces under a single manager. The commander will also ensure U.S. forces will be interoperable.

“This decision is a significant step in the department’s continued efforts to build its cyber capabilities, enabling Cyber Command to provide real, meaningful capabilities as a command on par with the other geographic and functional combat commands,” Rapuano said.

WASHINGTON — The oldest active-duty infantry unit in the Army is paving the way for the Army’s new effort to improve dining facilities, which are known as DFAC. The 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) is now giving more Soldiers healthier food options and greatly increasing the use of its facility.

A picture worth 1,000 words: 30 years of heritage

MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. (AFNS) — MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. (AFNS) — Glancing over a 1985 family portrait, a man is awestruck at the image of his younger self. The snapshot of his mother cradling him as his siblings welcomed back their father from a deployment captured a moment that was stronger than words.

Although he was too young to remember the moment, Maj. Jonathan Elliott, the 23rd Logistics Readiness Squadron director of operations, began his own search to retrieve this piece of heritage, which became the event that forged a stronger bond between father and son, who both served as Moody Air Force Base Airmen and Air Force officers.

“We were completely unaware of the photo’s existence,” said retired Lt. Col. Gary Elliott, a then 347th Tactical Fighter Wing F-4E Phantom II pilot from 1983-1986. “When the picture was taken, my whole attention was on my family, and I didn’t know we were the subject of an impromptu photo. I didn’t know if the photo had ever been used in an article or the base newspaper, but it was slice of life in our family history, and we wanted to obtain it.”

According to Gary, the wife of a former squadron mate, who lived in Valdosta, Georgia, sent the family a snapshot of their big framed photograph that hung on the wall at the Moody AFB Officers’ Club.

Determined to find it, the Elliott’s asked the Moody AFB Field Club and base photo lab for a chance to reprint the photo, but unfortunately, the host wing changed, resulting in the removal of the frame from the heritage wall, derailing their plans.

Making the old new again at the DFAC CONTINUED FROM 11 It provides an outlet for young Soldiers to relax and get a quality meal while also giving leaders a place to engage their Soldiers in a comfortable setting. The Old Guard is using the DFAC to conduct newcomers’ briefs, host leader development meals, and celebrate key calendar events such as the recent Army birthday.

By promoting and establishing innovative ways to use the DFAC and reach out to junior Soldiers, The Old Guard has seen dramatic results in morale and usage.

Monthly DFAC Counsel Meetings, scheduled movie showings, and new equipment, based on Soldier feedback, have all had a direct impact on the steady increase of utilization rates and patron support. The facility also offers free Wi-Fi. A key influence, and probably the most easily overlooked, is the advertisement of calendar events,

However, in the summer of 2015, fate would have it that another Elliott would spearhead the continued search.

“When I moved here, one of the first places I went was the (Moody AFB Field Club),” said Jonathan. “I was excited to finally get to see the actual picture and I wanted to get copies of it for my family. But it wasn’t there, disappointingly. So, I started asking around to try to locate it. I talked with the (Moody AFB Field Club) management, the wing historian, and any civilian I crossed paths with who’d been working on base long enough to have seen it.”

Although everyone he asked was incredibly gracious and tried to help, Jonathan kept coming up empty while he rummaged through various storage closets and boxes of old pictures. One day in May 2016, however, that all changed. As Col. Susan Riordan-Smith, the 23rd Mission Support Group commander, gave a briefing in the First Term Airmen Center building, she saw the picture that Jonathan was searching for all along and immediately notified him.

“I was shocked and relieved because it seemed too good to be true,” said Jonathan. “I went over to the FTAC building immediately so I could see it for myself.

It was a bit surreal as well because it’s my parents, siblings and me.

“It naturally created an emotional connection with me, and yet, the photographer perfectly captured the joy of military member and family reunited in such a way that it makes an emotional connection, even if you don’t know the people in the picture,” added Jonathan.

“It just has that iconic look.”

While he was tempted to immediately tell his dad of the finding, he wanted to savor the moment for a

specialty meals and daily menus. Across The Old Guard, appealing, nutritious menus are posted in high-traffic areas such as in the barracks and company areas, and are also emailed out to leadership to ensure maximum use.

The Old Guard is taking these steps because of a review of food services conducted by the Army G-4 and TRADOC Joint Culinary Center of Excellence (JCCoE). The review, part of the overall Army Health Initiative, is geared toward giving Soldiers healthy and convenient food choices to increase individual fitness readiness.

This new strategy ensures that menus and recipes are designed to enhance a Soldier ’s cognitive and physical performance through consistency, reliability and quality food products at the right time, location, and convenience to enhance the readiness.

Ultimately, the DFAC provides a key location that serves as the heart of communication and camaraderie between Leaders and Soldiers.

special day. As all parties in the photo were present in Washington state in June 2017, on Father’s Day, Jonathan uttered the words “I have something for you, Dad.” As Jonathan brought out a large, thin package in brown paper wrap, Gary handled what he says felt like a framed object and wondered if it might possibly be the photo.

“As I unwrapped it and saw that it was, I was a little choked up,” said Gary. “I think the whole family was a bit emotional. They had all seen the little snapshot on a shelf in our dining room, and knew that we had searched in vain for the actual photo. Everyone was happy that Jon had been able to track it down and get one for the family. He had it beautifully matted and framed, and it was a very special Fathers’ Day gift!”

For Gary, no gift could compare to the strong bond that he and Jonathan have forged over the years.

“Sharing the United States Air Force Academy as our alma mater strengthened this bond, and when I visit him at his duty stations, he always takes me in to his unit and helps me understand the mission and his responsibilities,” said Gary.

Gary is also appreciative of Jonathan wearing his old squadron’s paraphernalia and highlighting his heritage which is among the many things he says brings him pride.

“Two of my most proud moments of Jonathan was presenting his USAFA appointment (certificate) and administering the oath upon his promotion to major,” said Gary. “I put my uniform on for both of those occasions, and although it’s not the current style, it’s still “Air Force blue” and is a bond to Jon in his blues.

I’m proud to wear it, and I think Jon is proud to see me wear it.”

“Beyond the Air Force bond, it is still hard for me to stand for the national anthem and look at our flag without being a little choked up, and I trust Jon will always share this mixture of pride, humility, and gratefulness with me,” added Gary.

Manpower shortage impacts 633rd Medical Group services

The 633rd Medical Group strives to provide Trusted Care to all they serve, while supporting many deployed and home-station missions. Due to contract vacancies and multiple provider deployments/permanent changes of station during the coming months, it will take longer to receive appointments and have messages returned. In light of these staffing concerns, TRICARE will temporarily enroll only Active Duty service members and their family members. This action is being taken to ensure patients receive the care they deserve within the established standards. There will be no enrollment changes or action taken to any patients who are already enrolled at the 633rd Medical Group, regardless of category. For questions regarding TRICARE benefits, or for enrollment assistance to locate the best medical facility to meet healthcare needs, contact the TRICARE Information line at 1-800-TRICARE or 1-800-874-2273.

633rd SFS message to Hunt Housing residents

The 633rd Security Forces Squadron asks all Hunt Housing residents to secure their vehicles and homes.

Crime rates are generally higher during the summer months and have begun to increase in Hunt Housing.

Suspects have been targeting unlocked vehicles. The 633rd SFS has increased patrols in the area, but needs the assistance of all residents to stop the increase in crime. Residents can help by locking their vehicles and storing all valuable items in their vehicles out of view.

Real ID Act

On July 10, 2017, the Department of Homeland Security granted an extension to REAL ID Act requirements for the states of Missouri, Minnesota and Oregon.

Therefore, as of July 10, all states are either compliant with the REAL ID Act or have been granted an extension through Oct. 10, 2017.

The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, officially went into effect June 6, 2017; however, DHS issued a grace period for enforcing the act, which extends through Oct. 10, 2017 for most states not currently in compliance with the REAL ID Act. After Oct. 10, visitors coming to Joint Base LangleyEustis from any noncompliant state should be aware of the identification proofing requirement found at the following website: http://www.jble.af.mil/real-id-act/ People with currently-valid DBIDs ID cards will maintain access to the installation; however, if the card expires after the date of the REAL ID Act enforcement, they will need a valid form of identification to renew it.

633rd SFS message to Hunt Housing residents

The 633rd Security Forces Squadron asks all Hunt Housing residents to secure their vehicles and homes.

Crime rates are generally higher during the summer months and have begun to increase in Hunt Housing.

Suspects have been targeting unlocked vehicles. The 633rd SFS has increased patrols in the area, but needs the assistance of all residents to stop the increase in crime. Residents can help by locking their vehicles and storing all valuable items in their vehicles out of view.

Fort Eustis Education Center announces DANTES policy change

Effective Oct. 1, 2016, DANTES will no longer physically process any paper-based reimbursement.
