Community walks to raise suicide prevention awareness

Each year, more than 44,000 Americans die by suicide. Of those Americans, U.S. military veterans account for 18 percent of all adult suicides.

To help raise awareness and prevent such tragedies, Sept. 10 is designated as World Suicide Prevention Day, and within the U.S., Sept. 10-16 is National Suicide Awareness Week.

Both observances aim to communicate the risk factors and provide support for those affected by suicide.

For Wade Palmore, 1st Air Force liaison to Air Combat Command, suicide prevention and awareness education hits home. Having lost his brother Bobby in 2010, Palmore has participated in awareness events every year since his brother’s death, hoping to educate others on the signs to help prevent the same tragedy in others’ lives.

“Bobby was a wonderful soul, but troubled with burdens of alcoholism and drug abuse,” said Palmore. “It is unclear as to whether the disease of depression was a result or cause of his addictions, but I do know that he seemed to need more than I and the mental health system provided at the time. This is why awareness, by all, is the key to fighting depression and suicide.”

To help promote suicide awareness, members of the Hampton Roads community come together annually for various suicide prevention events.

The Hampton Roads Morning of Hope walk and the Out of the Darkness Walks aim to promote mental health support among civilian and military communities both locally and nationwide. These events include counselors and information tables, as well as crane curtains as a symbol of healing, happiness and hope.

Trashmore Park, Virginia Beach, Virginia, on Sept. 9. The Out of the Darkness Walks will be hosted in various locations in Hampton Roads on Sept. 16 and 30, as well as Oct. 14 and 15.

According to the Veterans Crisis Line, many individuals with depression or contemplating suicide deal with feelings of being alone. A simple gesture from a coworker or friend could possibly make a difference, and be the first step in helping them toward healing.

Understanding the possible signs or actions can help prevent suicide in the workplace and in the community. Some people who plan to harm themselves may not show any signs; however, there are some behaviors that may appear when someone needs help: • Appearing sad or depressed most of the time • Clinical depression: deep sadness, loss of interest, trouble sleeping and eating; and it doesn’t go away or continues to get worse • Feeling anxious, agitated or unable to sleep • Neglecting personal welfare; deteriorating physical appearance • Withdrawing from friends, family and society, or sleeping all the time • Losing interest in hobbies, work, school or other things one used to care about • Frequent and dramatic mood changes • Expressing feelings of excessive guilt or shame • Feelings of failure or decreased performance • Feeling that life is not worth living, or having no sense of purpose in life • Talk about feeling trapped—like there is no way out of a situation • Having feelings of desperation, and saying that there’s no solution to their problems Their behavior may be dramatically different from their normal behavior, or they may appear to be actively contemplating or preparing for a

94th FS: Developing a mission commander

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. – -In the airspace over a war zone dozens of aircraft from combatant commands and coalition forces are flying at top speeds around the area of responsibility.

To some looking on, this may seem like a traffic jam. But, this traffic jam is actually a pre-determined mission that has been laid out by one individual.

That role falls onto the mission commander, a sole pilot that is given orders by the commander to utilize the assets available to him, to create a successful mission While at Red Flag 17-4 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., two F-22 Raptor pilots of the 94th Fighter Squadron, were given those reigns during their mission commander certification upgrades, to develop them as exceptional leaders to lead the world’s most powerful teams.

“Capt. Flash and Capt. Mach have continued to show the attitude and

motivation to continue up the ranks as mission commanders, from four-ship flight leads,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Ocho, 1st FW weapons officer and 94th Fighter Squadron pilot. “Now these two pilots are learning how to integrate multiple assets and come together as a joint coalition force, to figure out how to best achieve the commanders intent.”

Starting at being a wingman, a pilot would then become a two-ship flight lead and then that pilot would become a four-ship flight lead and then mission commander for the Raptor community is the next step increasing readiness to win any fight, any time.

According to Ocho, being able to understand the F-22 Raptor fighting tactics and then take apart a tactical problem presented by the commander before you even leave the ground is key to success.

Fighter Squadron pilot. “Red Flag 17-4 has been a good precursor to learn all the processes involved in mission planning, executing and de-briefing and effectively coming up with a plan that’s going to be one that will achieve mission success, while minimizing losses, in a simulated combat environment” But with becoming a mission commander for a large air exercise there is a huge learning curve going from a four ship flight lead of F-22’s back home, to commanding the available assets at Red Flag, continued Flash.

According to Capt. Mach, 94th Fighter Squadron pilot and chief of mobility, the biggest difference from a four-ship flight lead is that you can get into the minutia of the details and how you’re going to plan your own for ship’s execution.

Whereas a mission commander you have to do not only that, but stay above the detail level, where the responsibility for mission success rests on the pilots shoulders.

“I’m fortunate enough to have been deemed that I could execute as a mission commander,” said Capt. Mach, 94th Fighter Squadron pilot and chief of mobility, “To come back at the end

of the day and see the gameplan that I had come up with go successfully and to see that you can relinquish some of that authority while still providing key direction to the overall force package, is very rewarding.”

Red Flag was established in 1975 as one of the initiatives directed

by General Robert J. Dixon, then commander of Tactical Air Command, to better prepare our forces for combat.

Tasked to plan and control this training, the 414th Combat Training Squadron’s mission is to maximize the combat readiness, capability and survivability of participating units by providing realistic training in a combined air, ground, space and electronic threat environment while providing for a free exchange of ideas between forces.

It’s rare to see U.S. Air Force Airmen serve a duty day out of uniform, but the abnormal occurrence is now a part of a professional development objective: Think consciously about how diversity can improve mission readiness.

During Diversity Day at the Professional Development Center on Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Airman Leadership School students are encouraged to think about the importance of diversity and how incorporating unique life experiences and lessons can propel a unit’s ability to affectively support the mission and warfighters.

“When people first think about diversity and inclusion in the military, they think of minorities and women,” said Chief Master Sgt. Janna Dorvil, Air Force Headquarters Diversity and Inclusion chief. “It’s much more than that. We all have a story and that story is different from everyone. We have to understand how to utilize our talent coming from different walks of life.”

She also added that encouraging the students to wear attire that best represents them, their culture, their hobbies, and their backgrounds opens up the atmosphere for more personal communication and understanding of the sensitive topics that could hinder accomplishing the mission.

According to Senior Master Sgt. Lafrance Ballard, Air Force Headquarters Diversity and Inclusion superintendent, the intention of introducing topics

like this at the early stages of leadership is to create a foundation of understanding others under various circumstances. “Diversity and inclusion helps remove artiďŹ cial barriers,â€? said Ballard. “What we don’t want to happen is our visual perceptions to get in the way of how we y, ďŹ ght, and win in airspace and cyberspace.â€?

For Guevara and the Diversity and Inclusion staff, the hope is that Diversity Day will help grow students into leaders who think consciously of the growing Air Force, and how the differences in Airmen make the Air Force more capable. “People are our number one asset in the military,� said Dorvil. “To have people show up ready to work, we need to take care of them and listen to them. You have to make it so everyone can live up to their full potential.�

Like an unsung hero, behind the scenes and out of sight the Metals Technology Flight at Joint Base Langley-Eustis performs basic and major aircraft structural damage repairs as well as manufacture tools to support the 1st Fighter Wing’s mission.

“Measure twice, cut once.” This is the moto each metal technician operates by, ensuring the precision of their craft meets the high standards required, as a simple mistake could cost a pilot or aircrew member their life.

“Other jobs can say on a daily basis that they impact lives,” said U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Jordan Mann, 1st Maintenance Squadron metals technology journeyman. “But here, we do a lot

of safety construction for other shops and a lot of process refinement and that can really make you feel good about yourself.”

According to Mann, the bulk of the responsibilities as metal shop technicians is to repair bushings and remove difficult bolts that maintainers are unable to extract themselves.

In addition to bolts and bushings, technicians also repair anything from aircraft boarding ladders, flare carts and manufacture tools for crew chiefs and other agencies across the installation.

“If [maintenance] brakes something like their tools, instead of ordering a new one or sending it out to get fixed, which could take months to years, they can bring it to us. In a couple hours we will have it ready for them,” said Mann. “A couple months ago, when there were issues with weapons

rails that were discharging. (The maintainers) came to us and asked for a gauge that would show whether it’s locked in or not. Within a day, we had almost 80 of them produced.”

According to Mann, technicians must be very meticulous on their measurements, especially when performing any job for an aircraft, as the tolerances of the measurement can only be off by a third of the diameter of a human hair.

“We definitely are able of saving the Air Force a lot of money and we have done it before,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Joint SNCO training course prepares Air Force, Army warfighters

U.S. Army and Air Force noncommissioned officers gathered for the first joint senior noncommissioned officer professional development course at Joint Base Langley-Eustis this August.

Integrating the Air Force and Army through this course is not only meant to help the soon-to-be SNCOs lead with a joint perspective, but it aims to prepare them to work cohesively in supporting the joint warfighters downrange.

“The SNCOs are leading the charge,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Lafrance Ballard, Air Force

Headquarters Diversity and Inclusion superintendent. “They are the ones that will be planting the seeds for what’s to come 15 years from now. The world is shifting with different perspectives, views and beliefs, and for us it’s all in the armed forces. We’re all different, but we all share the same goal: to protect the U.S. and abroad.”

The course is a first step in making JBLE mission ready as a joint force.

According to U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Melissa White, 128th Aviation Brigade first sergeant, in order to be accustomed to the joint setting during deployments, training has to start at home station.

“It’s my perception that it’s important to learn in a joint environment because

we operate in a joint environment,” said White. “This course is more peer driven.

We don’t just read it all out of a book, we are hearing each other ’s experiences and learning through them.”

The three-day course included mentoring, counseling, diversity training, first sergeant panels, ethics, stress management and personnel programs.

Each class ensured both Air Force and Army verbiage was used; exposing both cultures to one another, said White.

“When I went to my first sergeant training, it was here at Langley,” she added. “I didn’t know Air Force rank, agencies, or terminology. It’s all different but I knew I would be working closely with Air Force so it was good for

me to get the exposure. It set me up for success, as it will for them.”

According to U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Janna Dorvil, Air Force Headquarters Diversity and Inclusion chief, with the U.S. Armed Forces becoming more integrated, training in joint environments, service members can expect to be a part of joint training more frequently.

“We’re seeing joint more and more,” said Dorvil. “We have to get in that mindset because when you deploy, you’re going to be working with Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines. It won’t just be your own service. This is just the beginning of what’s to come. You’re going to see this more saturated as we go forward.”

Building bonds, resilience through lifetime of spirituality

For the past 25 years, service members, retirees and civilians of the Joint Base Langley-Eustis community have met every Wednesday morning at the Langley Chapel Annex for a bible study group.

Although the bible study group is not run by chaplains, it is self-sustained and run by fellow bible study members, who also welcome members of similar faith groups to worship, pray and discuss the bible.

The group also offers the members a long-lasting bond, as well as strengthens each individual’s ability to remain resilient through the pillar of spirituality.

According to the co-creator of the group, retired U.S. Air Force Gen. Dick Able, upon his arrival to Langley Air Force Base in 1992, he was asked when he could start a bible group similar to

the one he created in Washington D.C. His response was, “not soon enough.”

“Groups of people tend to get together for all kinds of reasons. This is a group for example, they got together 25 years ago and said, ‘hey we need to sit down and get to know each other, and what does our faith mean to us,’” said U.S. Air Force Chaplin (Col.) David Terrinoni. “Anyone who is in the service for any length of time, knows either you move or they move, so 25 years, in a very transient population, that is huge.”

Many of the past and current attendees, plan to attend the anniversary service to celebrate the continued support of the group.

“This is kind of like a family reunion, we have some retired senior officers and chiefs who will be coming for this event, and it’s a family reunion,” said Terrinoni. “Through these groups, life connections are made. Being a part of a group with common interests and someone who understands you, cares

AF leaders discuss EPME changes

U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. JoAnne Bass, chief of enlisted development education, hosted an Enlisted Professional Military Education 21 discussion at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Aug. 25, 2017.

Throughout the discussion, Bass reiterated that the education of today’s Airmen is a top priority, as the Airmen of today are constantly training the Airmen of the future. She also spoke with the Airmen about new changes for EPME and distance learning courses, as well as future developmental topics.

“Every single Airmen matters,” said Bass. “We owe you some development.”

A few key messages Bass foot stomped to the Airmen in attendance, were that each member should read the Mypers message regarding EPME which was announced on July 18, 2017, promotion boards will not show EPME completion starting FY 2018, and that there will be larger windows to complete the distance

learning.

Bass mentioned there will now be 100 percent inresidency opportunities for all active duty, Guard and Reserve Airmen for Airmen Leadership School, NCO Academy and SNCO Academy, and although distance learning is a pre-requisite for in-resident EPME, it is no longer based on time-in-service.

“My job is to make sure we are developing our Airmen. We need (Airmen) to focus on their training” she said. “Change is going to happen and change is not a bad thing, it is deliberate.”

According to U.S Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Michael Lee, JBLE career assistance advisor, who attended the discussion, modernizing our enlisted development is necessary.

DOD moves troops, search-rescue units, aircraft, vehicles to Texas

WASHINGTON — The Defense Department is prepositioning troops, search and rescue units, aircraft, vehicles, equipment and supplies to staging areas near the worst of the flooding in southeastern Texas in anticipation of a possible request for assistance, a Pentagon spokesman said here today.

Army Col. Robert Manning updated the media on DOD response efforts to Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath, and summarized activities of the Texas National Guard and the National Guard Bureau.

“Continuing rainfall from the hurricane is expected to cause devastating and life-threatening flooding throughout this week,” Manning said, adding, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims.”

STATE, LOCAL EFFORTS On Aug. 27, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed a memorandum of agreement approving a dual-status command, Manning said, which authorizes one commander to direct active-duty and

National Guard forces.

“As of now, all Guard personnel providing assistance are on Title 32, or state orders. Active-duty units are en route to the staging area in anticipation of a possible request. There has been no formal tasking [yet] of Title 10 DOD units,” the colonel added.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott today activated his state’s entire National Guard force in response to Hurricane Harvey, bringing the total number of deployed Texas Guard members to roughly 12,000.

The Texas National Guard currently has 16 aircraft and personnel conducting day and night wide-area search and rescue missions along the Texas coast from Corpus Christi to Houston.

That effort includes 10 UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, four UH-72 Lakota multi-mission helicopters, and two CH47 Chinook cargo helicopters.

Manning said the New York Air National Guard has provided one C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft, three HH-60 Pave Hawk search and rescue helicopters and two C-17 Globemaster

III transport aircraft. And six rotary-wing aircraft from the Utah, Nebraska and North Carolina Army National Guard are en route to the area.

Seven fixed-wing aircraft from the U.S. Coast Guard and Air National Guard are in support, he added, and the Texas National Guard is using about 200 Humvees, 218 high-water vehicles, 15 wreckers and 19 fuelers.

DOD SUPPORT Manning said U.S. Northern Command is poised to provide DOD support to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the federal lead. State and local response agencies are in the lead for their own response efforts.

“DOD has provided [Joint Base San Antonio-]Randolph, Seguin Auxiliary Airfield as a forward staging area to support distribution of supplies and equipment to the affected areas,” the colonel added, “and DOD has prepositioned a search and rescue … unit that includes two SAR planners, nine SAR rotary-wing aircraft, two fixed-wing aircraft, pararescue teams and associated

command-and-control … elements.”

The search and rescue assets are deploying to Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth in Texas, he said, and the Defense Logistics Agency has prepositioned logistics management and resource support, including 11 generators, 50,000 gallons of gasoline and 50,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

“Safety is the No. 1 priority,” Manning said. “We urge residents in the affected areas to continue to follow the instructions of state, local and tribal officials” and to stay away from evacuated areas until they are told the areas are safe.

633rd SFS message to Hunt Housing residents

The 633rd Security Forces Squadron asks all Hunt Housing residents to secure their vehicles and homes.

Crime rates are generally higher during the summer months and have begun to increase in Hunt Housing.

Suspects have been targeting unlocked vehicles. The 633rd SFS has increased patrols in the area, but needs the assistance of all residents to stop the increase in crime. Residents can help by locking their vehicles and storing all valuable items in their vehicles out of view.

Golf Classic

The USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia will host the 2017 Charity Golf Classic which will be held at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va., on, September 14, 2017.

The Captain’s Choice, 18-hole shotgun tournament, will start at 11:30 a.m., with registration, continental breakfast and the driving range opening promptly at 10:00 a.m. Following filled day of golf, the Red, White & Blue BBQ will start with drinks around 4:30 p.m., and dinner at 5:30 p.m., with awards to follow.

Effective Aug. 1, 2017, Fort Eustis’ Gate 2 (Shellabarger) will open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and close weekends and holidays.
