Sound the alarm: Fire prevention week is coming!

It’s midnight and a family is sound asleep. All of a sudden, everyone is awakened by a loud alarm—the smoke detectors are going off. Everyone jumps out of bed and heads to the front door, but it is blocked by fire.

They decide to return to their bedrooms to call 911. Unfortunately, by the time the fire department arrived on scene and extinguished the fire, the entire family passed away from smoke inhalation.

Although this tragedy could have happened to anyone, it could also have been prevented this time. The family tried to exit through the front door, but it was blocked. However, in the opposite direction was the sliding door to the patio. They failed to identify or practice two ways out of their home during an emergency. That’s why this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out,” is so

important.

This year’s theme focuses on making sure every second counts. Seconds can mean the difference between residents of the community escaping safely from a fire and having their lives end in tragedy.

Joint Base Langley-Eustis’ Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Prevention Association during Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 8-14, 2017, to urge residents to understand “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out.” The JBLE Fire Department will host a fire station open house as well as several other appearances around base during Fire Prevention Week. Through these educational, family-oriented activities, residents can learn more about maintaining an escape plan with two ways out, as well as the power of prevention.

Until then, members can follow the below tips to help improve their emergency exit plan at home:

Draw a map of your home.

Include all windows and doors.

Find two ways out of every room.

Make sure you can use all your ways out.

Make sure your doors and windows are not blocked.

Choose an outside meeting place in front of your home.

Go over your plan with everyone in your home.

Plan to assist anyone who needs help getting outside.

Test your smoke alarms to be sure they are working.

Oktoberfest celebration welcomes fall

The 733rd Mission Support Group hosted the annual Oktoberfest celebration at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., Sept. 22, 2017.

A traditional “Oompah” band, The Happy Dutchmen, performed for attendees, playing songs like “Edelweis,” “Schitzelbank” and “Ein Prosit.” To honor Oktoberfest traditions, the event’s menu included beer, bratwurst, chicken and sauerkraut.

The event also included a “Kinderfest” fall festival for children, featuring a bounce house, hay ride, balloon animals and face painting.

More than just a festival for drinking in Germany, Oktoberfest is a celebration of the beginning of fall for everyone to enjoy.

The borderless threat: Army Cyber Command helping defend nation’s network

FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. — “We live in a wired world. Companies and countries rely on cyberspace for everything from financial transactions to the movement of military forces,” reads the 2015 Department of Defense cyber strategy. “Computer code blurs the line between the cyber and physical world and connects millions of objects to the Internet or private networks.”

Living in that connected world might bring great benefit but it also makes society vulnerable to state and non-state actors, criminal enterprises, terrorist threat organizations, and “hacktivists.” Each of these threats has access to cyber capabilities and is able to use that access to strike down important networks, destroying data and shutting down critical systems from thousands of miles away, according to the study.

“Cyber threats have changed the way Army looks at the network, data, and networked systems,” said Lt. Gen. Paul Nakasone, who commands U.S. Army Cyber Command. “[The network] is not only an enabler for mission command and day-to-day business operations but also a weapons platform for cyberspace operations.”

During the 2017 Association of the U.S. Army Annual Meeting and Exposition, Oct. 9-11 in Washington, D.C., Maj. Gen. Garrett Yee, the military deputy for cybersecurity within the Army’s CIO G-6, and Brig. Gen. Joseph McGee, the deputy commander of operations for ARCYBER, will further discuss the borderless nature of cyber-attacks. Their “Warrior ’s Corner” presentation will be live-streamed Oct. 11 at 12:35 p.m. Eastern time on www.dvidshub.net.

THE BIGGEST RISK

To stay relevant in the cyber domain, ARCYBER operates and aggressively defends the Defense Department’s information network. The command employs both offensive and defensive cyberspace techniques to keep the United States safe from threats posed by global adversaries, for instance. Additionally, they rapidly develop and deploy new capabilities to defend against a resilient, adaptive enemy.

Defending the network can be difficult, Nakasone said. In the cyber environment, attackers have a considerable advantage as they “only have to be right once.”

defense of our networks, systems, and weapons platforms,” Nakasone said. “To put this complex challenge in perspective, remember that our baseline Army network alone entails over 1 million endpoints.”

The biggest risk to the DOD network is the uniformed user, as adversaries continue to exploit phishing techniques, he added.

“It’s no longer the Nigerian prince that’s offering you a million dollars,” he said. “It’s someone that has perhaps done some social research with regards to social media.”

User-generated vulnerabilities create a larger concern, as it provides adversaries an opportunity to establish a presence and extract information from the DOD network — putting personally identifiable information and mission-critical data for military weapons and transport systems at risk, he said.

As part of its mission, ARCYBER constantly conducts passive and active cyberspace operations to preserve the ability to use friendly cyberspace capabilities and protect data, networks, net-centric capabilities and other designated systems. ARCYBER also aggressively defends DOD networks, data, and weapons systems through network hardening, modernization, and an active defense.

Additionally, ARCYBER is now engaged in designing, building and delivering integrated capabilities for the future fight, focusing on defensive and offensive cyberspace operations. The command supports Army readiness as it continues to build 62 total-force cyber mission teams.

GROWING THE CYBER FORCE

“If you think about what makes us successful, I

would offer that there are probably four areas: our people, our teams, our experiences, and our future,” Nakasone said.

Maj. Gen. John Morrison, the commanding general of the Army Cyber Center of Excellence, and Maj. Gen. James Mingus, the director of the Army Mission Command Center of Excellence, will elaborate on future plans for all four of those success areas during another Warrior ’s Corner presentation Oct. 10 titled “The Network Way Ahead.” That AUSA presentation will be livestreamed at 2:30 p.m. Eastern time.

The cyber workforce will be further discussed at an Institute of Land Warfare Contemporary Military Forum Oct. 11 at 2 p.m., “A New Kind of Force for a New Fighting Domain: Cyber Talent Management.”

Panelists include leaders in industry and Maj. Gen. John B. Morrison Jr., commanding general of the Cyber Center of Excellence, along with Brig. Gen. Stephen J Hager, deputy commander of Operations at Cyber National Mission Force, U.S. Cyber Command. This panel is also scheduled to be livestreamed on www. dvidshub.net.

ARCYBER employs 20,000 people in four states, Nakasone said, and there is a strong emphasis from the Army to properly train and develop personnel at all levels — junior enlisted, noncommissioned officers, warrant officers, officers, and civilians — for the duration of their career.

“We don’t compete with the private sector in terms of money and salary — but the pay is not the only factor to [retain] talented employees,” Nakasone said. “The Army is unique in that we offer unmatched mission and teamwork against adversaries to our nation. Few private sector outlets can offer that rare opportunity.”

Instructor fuels passion through new generation of Army aviators

From a young age, U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 5 Bill Basabilbaso, U.S. Army Reserve 5th Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment, 244th Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade command chief warrant officer, knew he wanted to be a pilot.

Basabilbaso immigrated to the U.S. with his family from Argentina at eight years old. Now after 32 years of serving his country, he relies on experiences and lessons from those who inspired him to teach the new generation of pilots.

In 1978, Basabilbaso joined the U.S. Navy, spending the latter part of his three-year enlistment on an aircraft carrier. After six years in the civilian sector, in 1987, he decided to apply to the U.S. Army warrant officer flight training program—a childhood dream.

In 1989, Basabilbaso graduated flight school and was appointed as a warrant officer in 1991.

“There’s nothing else I would rather do,” said Basabilbaso. “My role models were the Vietnam-era warrant officers who taught me how to fly,” said Basabilbaso. “As a young pilot and officer, they were who I looked up to.”

Upon flying countless missions in places ranging from France to Iraq, his passion nurtured a desire to train as an instructor pilot.

As a reservist, he now trains pilots during the week as a member of the Fort Eustis Air Safety Institute, and during drill weekends, he trains while donning the uniform.

When new pilots come to Fort Eustis, Basabilbaso helps hone their skills to ensure the safety and security of aviators and crews.

“The hardest part is having to constantly study because things never remain the same,” said Basabilbaso.

“Manipulating the controls is the easy part—anyone can be taught to do that.

Studying, constant learning, good judgement and experience is what makes you a pilot. We need to keep inspiring young, agile minds to be the next generation.”

According to his students, the vital information the veteran pilot imparts on them could be the difference between life and death. He consistently reminds his apprentices to stay 10 steps ahead of the game while in the cockpit to anticipate changes or handle emergencies.

“He is all about the Army regulations,” said Sgt. 1st Class Nathan Smith, Bravo Company, 5th General Support Aviation Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment flight engineer. “He places emphasis on safety while teaching new pilots to hone their skills as aviators.”

Having flown with the instructor pilot since 2003, Smith said new pilots who progress through Basabilbaso’s training graduate as well-versed Chinook aviators.

“The love of flying keeps him coming to work every day,” said Smith. “Where else can you get paid to do something that you have such a passion for? I think he falls into that mold pretty well.”

of emotions, depending on his surroundings and the mission at hand.

But no matter what, Basabilbaso said he is always overcome with excitement while piloting an aircraft.

The once young boy from Argentina with a dream of flying found his place in a nation that allowed him to experience the world. Now he prides himself in

protecting that nation, giving back to fellow countrymen who fueled his desire to serve.

“There’s nothing like flying in the U.S.,” said Basabilbaso. “The people you meet when stopping for fuel, or at a temporary-duty station are like no others; genuine Americans who never fail to thank us for what we do.”

ATC TEAM EXCEEDS STANDARDS

The Air Traffic Control Tower team on Langley Air Force Base received recognition for its efforts during an abundance of high visibility events, which happened last year.

The tower was awarded the D. Ray Hardin Air Traffic Control Facility of the Year award, at the Air Force and Air Combat Command level. The award, which is given to an ATC facility that has made notable contributions to the ATC system is judged on a variety of areas ranging from unusual traffic work load to deployments and emergency situations.

For the people working in the tower, the recognition meant a lot. Over the course of the past year, they put in a great deal of work to help the office and runway successfully generate airpower. From the junior enlisted to the officers, the service members at the ATC tower are willing to put in the extra effort during times of low manning.

According to the team, without each and every person stepping up to play their part, the team would not have earned the award, and the tower would not be an ideal place to work.

“The tower has a high turnover due to deployments and separations,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Daniel Sluss, 1st Operations Support Squadron assistant chief controller. “For the controllers, there’s opportunity to work as a civilian in the Federal Aviation Administration, so a lot of Airmen end up leaving after their first term. We have a lot of people deploying regularly also, leaving us short staffed.”

According to Sluss, through the hard work of seasoned veterans who have stayed in, and the Airmen arriving from technical school, the tower has maintained its excellent work ethic.

One example of someone who went above and beyond for the team is Staff Sgt. Joshua Shaffer, a watch supervisor.

Technically, Shaffer wasn’t supposed to be in the watch supervisor position until this past September. During a very critical time, when manning was extremely low, Shaffer was granted a waiver to be a watch supervisor five months early. As a watch supervisor for the tower, Shaffer stepped up to learn how to oversee all activity going on at the top of the control tower, along

with anything else that might be needed.

With new skills at his disposal, Shaffer hopes to further strengthen his team by passing down his expertise to the incoming Airmen.

“We call it a tower team concept,” said Shaffer.

“Everybody up there has your back especially during chaos. Some trainees will need a softer touch going into training and others will need a kick in the butt. It’s all about what works and passing down your knowledge to the next generation.”

According to Senior Airman Richard Smith, 1st OSS air traffic controller, the goal is to make the next generation of controllers better than the last.

With extensive training and a lot of time, each trainee will at least be at the level of their trainer or better.

Smith has worked with Shaffer since the beginning of his career at Joint Base LangleyEustis. Shaffer trained Smith on most of his tasks starting from local, which is the person in the tower talking to the pilot, all the way to today, where he’s training him to be an on watch supervisor.

“My aunt is contracted out at Dover (Air Force Base) and she asked me if I was sure I wanted to be an air traffic controller,” said Smith. “Not because she didn’t think I could do it, but because, she knew it was extremely competitive.

She was looking out for my best interest because she’s family. These guys are like family, they look out for my best interest and they got me where I am (today).”

The training and constant support from his team pushed Smith to earn the Air Traffic Controller of the Year award at the Air Combat Command and Air Force levels. He also won the Air Traffic Control Association Military Air Traffic Controller of the Year award.

“The award really goes hand-in-hand with the award the whole facility was given,” said Smith.

“It’s our culture here to train people to be even better than we are. You don’t want to be working next to someone who isn’t at least on your level because we’re all in this together.”

In the coming months, Shaffer and Smith are scheduled to deploy together. Although the tower team will be losing two great Airmen, they are confident that the people they’ve trained will be the next best and keep the airpower mission going strong.

Army Secretary talks readiness and modernization during visit to Aberdeen Proving Ground

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. — If a Soldier uses it to shoot, move, communicate, protect or provide intelligence, chances are, at some point that technology passed through the development, testing, evaluation and integration process at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.

That extensive high-tech research, development and testing mission is what brought Acting Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy to visit APG on Sept. 20.

McCarthy, sworn in as Under Secretary of the Army on Aug. 3 and who assumed duties as Acting Secretary the same day, said it is necessary for the Army to possess the capabilities to fight across multiple domains.

“We must look for rapid insertion of new technology in order to keep pace with both commercial trends and adversaries,” McCarthy said. “You don’t defend a country on a budget, you defend it on a strategy. The Army requires sufficient and predictable funding to sustain readiness for the current fight and to prepare our Army for the future fight.”

McCarthy added that it was pertinent that the Army stay focused on readiness, while not taking away from ongoing modernization efforts. For APG, which provides life cycle management of the Army’s communications, network, intelligence, cyber and electronics equipment, that message is particularly important.

“Team APG was extremely honored to host Acting Secretary McCarthy,” said Maj. Gen. Randy Taylor, commanding general of the U.S. Army Communications-

Electronics Command and senior mission commander for APG. “As the Army’s premier center of science and technology, acquisition and test innovation, APG showcased how we provide the Defense Department with capabilities to solve some of the toughest issues in expeditionary mission command, cyber, satellite communications, software applications, and networking.”

Taylor added that APG’s unique location on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay provides the Army the terrain and environmental conditions it needs to test just about any technology that helps Soldiers shoot, move, or communicate.

While at APG, McCarthy met with leaders from organizations including the Research and Development Command, Program Executive Office Command, Control and Communications-Tactical, Army Test and Evaluation Command, the Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center and the Aberdeen Test Center, to discuss the unique coexistence of science and technology, research, development, acquisition, testing and sustainment at one location.

From secure wireless communications that reduce bulky and burdensome wires and cables, to radios that allow Soldiers to talk anywhere in the world, to seamless mission command technologies similar to apps on an iPhone, McCarthy took in the recent modernization efforts across the various portfolios, many of which center on modernizing the Army’s tactical network.

Air Force releases call to industry for directed energy experimentation as part of flight plan

By Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs WASHINGTON (AFNS) -The Strategic Development Planning and Experimentation office recently released a request for information to industry as part of market research analyses in support of an upcoming experimentation demonstration using directed energy technology to counter unmanned aircraft systems.

This experimentation campaign comes at the direction of the Air Force Directed Energy Weapons Flight Plan, signed in May 2017 by the Secretary of the Air Force and the Chief of Staff of the Air Force.

“We identified directed energy as a game-changing technology area in our Air Force strategy and pressed forward with developing a flight plan to define what we needed to do to get from the laboratory to operational capability,” said Dr. Greg Zacharias, Chief Scientist of the Air Force. “Experimentation and prototyping are critical tools to help make this happen.”

The Air Force is seeking information regarding the industry capability to provide a directed energy weapons

system for targeting group 1 and group 2 unmanned aircraft systems during a counter-UAS operation. The SDPE office is planning the experimentation campaign for fiscal year 2018.

“Forward base defense was one of the used cases for directed energy outlined in the flight plan,” said Dr. Michael Jirjis, experimentation campaign program manager. “We’re looking to assess capabilities and maturity of directed energy technologies available today and in the near-term.”

Directed energy weapons, which includes high energy lasers and high power microwaves, can provide the ability to precisely engage targets of interest with little to no collateral impacts and provide protection to Air Force assets that must operate in harm’s way.

“Experimentation will be key to the deployment of directed energy weapons, but the required critical thinking will come from all corners of the Air Force, not just scientists and engineers,” said Jirjis. “There will be collaboration from warfighters, planners, logisticians and more.”

”Ramba” is first female Puerto Rican general officer in US Army Reserve

By Master Sgt. Michel Sauret FORT MEADE, Md. — Before they called her general, they called her “Ramba” in Puerto Rico — the female version of Rambo.

The nickname began in 1987, when Irene Miller was an ROTC cadet. Physical fitness and obstacle courses were a breeze to her. That’s because Cadet Miller ran everywhere.

“I lived in the countryside of Puerto Rico … Often my car had a flat tire, and I had to get to physical conditioning, and I’d already been running from afar,” said Irene, who now goes by her married name, Zoppi.

She would run from one bus stop to another, trying to catch the “guagua” in time for her physical training sessions.

The nickname of “Ramba” was originally given by an ROTC instructor, a U.S. Army Ranger, but it stuck ever since.

Thirty years later, Zoppi still hasn’t slowed down. If anything, she’s picked up momentum and speed.

Instead of being remembered as a jungle warrior movie star, Zoppi carries a star of her own: Brig. Gen. Irene Zoppi is the first Puerto Rican woman promoted to the rank of general in the U.S. Army Reserve. She received the star during her promotion ceremony at Fort Meade on Aug. 28, 2017.

“If you look at the percentages, if you look at anything, this story was not written for her. She wrote it,” said Arnaldo Claudio, who is a retired U.S. Army colonel and Zoppi’s former ROTC instructor.

There are only 126 total general officers

One of several expeditionary command post capabilities designed by CERDEC to explore minimalistic solutions for initial and early forcible entry operations, the effort includes a command post integrated onto a light vehicle. This enables communications and mission command as soon as Soldiers hit the ground.

McCarthy also visited APG’s Army Test Center, which provides testing for Army vehicle platforms, weapons, munitions and Soldier protection equipment. Here he saw the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, the Army’s newest light tactical vehicle that will replace a portion of the HMMWV fleet, and an upgunned Stryker that serves as a prototype to upgrade lethality.

The U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command, the Army’s independent tester and evaluator, utilizes the

Aberdeen Test Center to evaluate and integrate efforts across Army programs and the development community.

“Strong partnerships have been created between the test community and the acquisition corps to ensure compliance with the Army Chief of Staff’s number one priority — readiness,” said Maj. Gen. John W. Charlton, commander of ATEC. “As one highly skilled team, we work together to provide the most effective, suitable and survivable equipment for today’s and tomorrow’s warfighters.”

This collaboration at APG between program managers, the science and technology community, testers and integrators — along with the ability to gain direct Soldier feedback — is essential in building readiness and modernization across the Army.

“It was an honor to visit the APG workforce,” McCarthy said. “It is clear that you keep the American Soldier front and center in everything you do, in every piece of equipment you field to our Army.”

in the Army Reserve today, out of a total force of nearly 200,000 Soldiers.

Statistically, that’s less than .007 percent.

“She’s an example and role model not just for young females in society, but also males. You have to understand where she came from. She came from a very poor background. The odds were completely against her … I had better chances (in life than her) because at least I spoke a little English. She came from — you can use the word ‘nada.’

N-A-D-A. That means nothing,” said Claudio, who is now the federal police monitor for the Police Reform of Puerto Rico.

Zoppi’s promotion comes with a new appointment as deputy commanding general for the 200th Military Police Command, the largest military police organization in the Department of Defense. She’s served at every level of military leadership to get to this level. Yet, as extensive as her military resume is, Zoppi carries another lengthy list of personal and professional accomplishments: She speaks five languages, has a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, plus three masters’ degrees, including in business marketing and strategic studies.

“She is where she is because she is a strong will. A fighter. A warrior type that never said no and kept the

resiliency throughout,” said Claudio.

During her ceremony, the room was packed with friends, family, military leaders and professional colleagues who have known Zoppi over the years.

They had travelled from all over, even from Puerto Rico and Iraq, to attend the promotion. It took nearly two hours for all invited guests to shake hands and congratulate Zoppi after the ceremony was complete. Three U.S. Army major generals spoke during the ceremony, showering Zoppi with praise and respect.

“One of the first things you notice about Irene Zoppi is her energy and her presence. You don’t have to plug her in or recharge her to get energy out of her,” said one guest speaker and mentor, Maj. Gen. Luis Visot, the former chief of staff of the U.S. Army Reserve, who is now retired.

At one point during his speech, Visot invited guests from the audience to come up to the microphone, including education and military professionals who had known Zoppi at various stages in her career. Each of them said how they admired Zoppi’s compassion for people and her drive, but one speaker stole the show.

“I’m so proud of her. She came in the Army not knowing English and my mom faced so much adversity. When I face difficulty, I ask myself, ‘What would my mom do?’” said Andrew Zoppi, who is a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force.

“I have to have that certain leadership (that she has) … She’s always been there for advice, so I can train and mentor my Airmen, and I look up to her. I’m so proud of her because she came from not even knowing English, enlisted, to now a one-star (general). That’s something you would think is impossible,” he said.

Zoppi is equally proud of her son and her entire family. Her husband of 29 years, Thomas Zoppi, is a Maryland police officer in Anne Arundel County.

Together they have three children: Andrew, 26, Isabel, 19, and Antonio, 16.

During her speech, Zoppi presented them with gifts, and joked with her youngest son, Antonio, “For you my son, I have the best gift. I have an Army Recruiter waiting in the back. He’s ready for you.”

She credits her husband for supporting her throughout her career: In times of adversity, he brought her to the mirror to look at herself and persevere through whatever challenge she faced.

Thomas Zoppi was a U.S. Marine stationed at the Roosevelt Roads Naval Station, Puerto Rico, when they first met. He admired Irene ever since the beginning, whom he saw set ambitious goals for herself even before they were married. They stayed up late one night to discuss their future dreams. He wanted to go into law enforcement. She wanted to graduate ROTC in hopes of making the rank of general.

“It wasn’t as easy as the dreams had sounded at the beginning. The Marine Corps sent me to the west, and the Army sent you to the east, as well as numerous other deployments, but through the bumps, mountains and barriers, you accomplished it, my love,” said Thomas during a speech. “One of the most important goals in your life has come true. I am very proud of you with all my

heart and soul.”

For Zoppi, her family is part of her credentials. She’s as proud of her role of mother and wife as she is her new title of general.

“The same love that I’m giving the rest of my jobs, which I’m very proud of, I have to give my husband and my children … I have to be equally good to my family, like I am proclaiming to give to the rest,” she said.

On the civilian side, Dr. Zoppi is a program director for the National Intelligence University, which is run by the National Security Agency. She’s been involved in education ever since she left active duty as a captain in 1995 to join the Army Reserve. She became a public school teacher, and has since taught at various universities. She is now a member of the Maryland State Board of Education. On that board, she specializes in helping military families and minority students.

“She is an example of what perseverance and resiliency and working hard accomplishes. We’re not talking about just being smart … She has always worked hard,” said Claudio.

“She’s a servant to the community not only as a Soldier, but as a member and leader in one of the most important aspects of community: education. In every society, we have three pillars: We have health, we have security, and we have education. She’s part of two pillars of our society,” he said.

Zoppi truly understands the importance of education. In addition to being an ROTC cadet, Zoppi worked four jobs to help pay for her degree at the University of Puerto Rico. She worked in a department store, she cleaned, was an English tutor and was a professional scuba diver. She would dive for the coastal marine department to collect ocean sediments for study.

She’s bashful about her work as an English tutor while in college. Even though Zoppi didn’t speak English at the time, she was able to read it and helped correct papers for other students.

Her father — who was from Indiana — owned the Encyclopedia Britanica.

Zoppi would use the encyclopedia to help her read and write in English.

her from Puerto Rico to the U.S., then to Germany, deployed to the Persian Gulf War, and then back to the U.S., she describes it as a multicultural shock.

“If you know about culture and acculturation, you come to the United States, and it’s one culture. Then the military has another culture. Then you go to Europe. Then you go to war, another culture,” said Zoppi, who now resides in central Maryland.

Through it all, Zoppi maintained her Puerto Rican warmth and passion. The passion and love that Zoppi expresses exudes her through every aspect of her life. It’s part of her, she said.

“My culture is very warm and caring.

We’re very loving. That’s part of who I am.

And that’s how I became very successful in the military, because nurturing and caring and supporting (Soldiers) is the best way to go as a leader,” said Zoppi, who frequently refers to herself as a “servant leader.”

In the last three decades, she has seen the military’s equal opportunity culture embrace diversity to reward excellence, no matter the Soldier’s background.

She’s grateful that in her 32-year military career (she originally enlisted as a private in 1985 before being commissioned) she’s been able to hold onto her Puerto Rican heritage while serving in the military.

“I’m proud to be from Puerto Rico, because it’s home. Its language becomes part of your soul, your spirit … I’m a product of a hard working people. I’m a product of a lack of not having. I’m a product to want to dream to become

the best … Everybody who is from Puerto Rico who experiences that, we look at each other and we don’t give up.

Wherever you go, you will see Puerto Ricans bringing their flag, their music, their guitar, and we will be playing and singing because that’s part of our soul.

We are proud to be Americans and we are proud to serve, and we believe in the American values,” she said.

She’s also grateful of having reached this rank as a woman because it shows that everyone has the same opportunity to excel in the Army.

“We’re all Soldiers. It’s not about being a woman or not. It’s about having the same opportunities as our counterparts who are male Soldiers to become who we want to become,” said Zoppi.

In fact, in her newest position, Zoppi isn’t the only female general officer in charge of the military police command.

She will be working for Maj. Gen. Marion Garcia, who has been in command of the 200th for more than a year. Before Zoppi took the position, the previous deputycommanding general was also a woman: Brig. Gen. Kelly Wakefield.

“When I was coming to the ranks as a lieutenant, I never saw that. I never had a female mentor. And I never thought I could become (a general). It’s important that the Army is showing all of these diverse (opportunities) … It’s not about gender difference. It’s about how we are all Soldiers, and grooming Soldiers that have the potential to become the best at their higher position to make our Army better,” she said.

On July 10, 2017, the Department of Homeland Security granted an extension to REAL ID Act requirements for the states of Missouri, Minnesota and Oregon. Therefore, as of July 10, all states are either compliant with the REAL ID Act or have been granted an extension through Oct. 10, 2017.

The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, officially went into effect June 6, 2017; however, DHS issued a grace period for enforcing the act, which extends through Oct. 10, 2017 for most states not currently in compliance with the REAL ID Act. After Oct. 10, visitors coming to Joint Base LangleyEustis, Va., from any noncompliant state should be aware of the identification proofing requirement found at the following website: http://www.jble.af.mil/real-idact/ Individuals with currently-valid DBIDs ID cards will maintain access to the installation; however, if the card expires after the date of the REAL ID Act enforcement, they will need a valid form of identification to renew it.

Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA gate) changes

Security Forces personnel will no longer man the Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA Gate). Personnel will still have their credentials checked by guards at the main NASA gate, however, their credentials will not be checked again at the Durand Entry Control Facility.

NASA guards will still man their side of the Durand Entry Control Facility and will only allow CAC holders (no dependent ID cards) to enter NASA property.

Additionally, no commercial vehicles are allowed access to NASA property. The Durand Entry Control Facility hours are from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

End of fiscal year fuels account closeout

In an effort to complete end of fiscal year fuels account closeout, the Langley Fuels Service Station will close from 2 p.m. to 12 a.m., Sept. 30, 2017. This does not include AAFES. Members are encouraged to make every effort to insure vehicles have sufficient fuel to cover the closure time. Manpower shortage impacts 633rd Medical Group services The 633rd Medical Group strives to provide Trusted Care to all they serve, while supporting many deployed and home-station missions. Due to contract vacancies and multiple provider deployments/permanent changes of station during the coming months, it will take longer to receive appointments and have messages returned.

In light of these staffing concerns, TRICARE will temporarily enroll only Active Duty service members and their family members. This action is being taken to ensure patients receive the care they deserve within the established standards. There will be no enrollment changes or action taken to any patients who are already enrolled at the 633rd Medical Group, regardless of category. Real ID Act

On July 10, 2017, the Department of Homeland Security granted an extension to REAL ID Act requirements for the states of Missouri, Minnesota and Oregon. Therefore, as of July 10, all states are either compliant with the REAL ID Act or have been granted an extension through Oct. 10, 2017.

The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, officially went into effect June 6, 2017; however, DHS issued a grace period for enforcing the act, which extends through Oct. 10, 2017 for most states not currently in compliance with the REAL ID Act. After Oct. 10, visitors coming to Joint Base LangleyEustis, Va., from any noncompliant state should be aware of the identification proofing requirement found at the following website: http://www.jble.af.mil/realid-act/ Individuals with currently-valid DBIDs ID cards will maintain access to the installation; however, if the card expires after the date of the REAL ID Act enforcement, they will need a valid form of identification to renew it.

Oct. 19, 1781 Victory at Yorktown

Every year since Oct. 19, 1781, Yorktown celebrates the surrender by the British forces with patriotic observances. The celebration will hold its annual parade, wreath-laying ceremony and performances by the Old Guard.
