Forum brings military, civilian religious leaders together

Ministers, pastors and deacons from the Hampton Roads community gathered with Joint Base Langley-Eustis chaplains for the first Shared Ministry Forum here, Oct. 11, 2018.

The forum brought on- and off-post religious leaders together to build relationships and provide information to support service members within their community.

“We know that not all of the service members who work here are coming to the chapel services on base--a lot of them are going to churches in the local community,” said U.S. Army Chaplain (Col.) James Palmer, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command chaplain.

“The intent here is to just make the local religious leaders aware of some of the resources that are available to the service members here on post as well as off post.”

The forum focused on domestic violence and how religious leaders can counsel and support service members who may have issues unique to military families. Lunch was provided for

attendees to allow time for discussion and feedback on forum topics.

“We selected October to do this because it’s Domestic Violence Prevention Month,” Palmer said. “It’s also Pastor Appreciation Month so we wanted to show we appreciate them and we’re here to support them.”

Representatives from Family Advocacy and the Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Program presented information on resources and programs available to Service members and their families within their organizations.

Larry Rieger, Saint Michael and All Angels Charismatic Episcopal Church resident deacon, teaches ethics and leadership with the ROTC programs at the College of William and Mary, and Christopher Newport University. He believes this forum can help him better educate cadets about the challenges they are going to have to face as officers in the U.S. military and how they can support their units.

The Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard plan is designed to minimize aircraft exposure to potentially hazardous wildlife strikes during airfield and flying operations at Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

“When the base was bought over 100 years ago, they weren’t thinking they’d be flying F-22 Raptors—bird strikes were not a thought,” said Jay Carr, USDA/WS wildlife biologist assigned to the 1st Fighter Wing Safety Office.

“Wetlands were purchased thinking it was cheap. No one wanted them and no

one would get upset at the government purchasing it.

“Now here we are, on a peninsula that has a landfill less than three miles away on one side, on the other side we’ve got a national wildlife refuge, and most of our airfield is spotted with wetlands, which attracts a significant variety of bird species.”

Habitat management is the main way to keep wildlife off the airfield by making it undesirable in terms of food, water and shelter.

According to Carr, grass management is probably the number one priority.

The BASH program works with landscapers to keep the grass on the flightline between 7 to 14 inches long, so small mammals aren’t seen by predatory birds who, in turn, get frustrated and leave to hunt elsewhere. The grass is also maintained so it doesn’t get long enough to produce seeds and leave a buffet on the ground.

Working in conjunction with entomology to control insects that could attract wildlife also helps with habitat management.

Firefighters assigned to the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron participated in a Rescue Technician One Course, here, from Sept. 24 to Oct. 18, 2018.

Instructors from the 312th Training Squadron at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas, taught 11 U.S. Air Force Airmen how to run emergencies during rescue operations over the

course of 18 training days. This included both classroom and hands-on training.

“All right, so we start with block one, (which are) normal rope rescue principles and tying knots, what gears are rated at and things like that,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Max Ribera, 312th Training Squadron Rescue Technician Course instructor supervisor. “Everything builds on itself so, we then (move on) to low angle rescue then we start doing rappelling to a victim and

pickoffs of suspended victims, which is just a victim on the line, passed out.”

According to Ribera, the firefighters participated in several exercises where they constructed systems to rescue simulated victims via rappelling. The firefighters also built and completed a highline, which is an advanced technical expert build, before moving on to their final rope rescue scenario and confined space training.

Although the training meant the firefighters had to absorb a lot of information in a short time, Staff Sgt. Isaac Sunnock, 633rd CES lead firefighter, said that it is well worth it having instructors on location to train the most Airmen at one time.

“Here at Langley, we do have rescue missions,” Sunnock said.

“We have a rescue truck, so it’s always better for us when we have more (trained people) because that’s more guys that know what they’re doing. So, this just frees up a lot of time and resources for our shifts.”

The firefighters at Langley don’t often have to recue vic-

tims at low or high angles or in confined spaces, but Sunnock stressed that preparedness is key when responding to emergencies.

“It’s not something that is frequently used, but just like anything with our job, just because it’s not frequently used, it doesn’t mean we don’t need to be proficient at it,” Sunnock said. “When it does happen, we

do need experts at the ready so that we can respond accordingly and rescue someone when they need us.”

Whether or not these Airmen will be called to perform the skills during this training, the 633rd CES Fire Department is prepared to respond to emergencies and aid those who may need them in times of distress.

Dental assistant program trains volunteers for a career in dentistry By 2nd Lt. Samuel Eckholm 633RD AIR BASE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS

JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, VA.

The Red Cross Dental Assistant Program is back up and running, giving volunteers an opportunity to build a foundation for a career in dentistry at Joint Base Langley-Eustis now through March.

The six-month program provides hands on training for those with little to no dental experience, and is open to all military family members and retirees ages 18 and up.

Volunteers selected for the program work full-time from 6:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays.

“Throughout the program, volunteers are given the unique opportunity to learn about various dental specialties,” said

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Angela Dunston, 633rd Dental Squadron Technician.

During the first phase, volunteers accomplish classroom training where they learn about dental instruments, anatomy, and physiology.

The next phase consists of hands-on training where volunteers shadow other assistants.

During the final phase, volunteers have the opportunity to assist dentists on their own.

Upon completion of the program, volunteers receive an official American Red Cross Volunteer certificate of training. While this certificate will not qualify them as dental assistants, training hours can translate into transfer credits for programs that provide full certification.

The program began in Sep-

tember, the first time it has been offered at Langley since 2008.

Two individuals are currently enrolled in the program, Megan Barnard and Delci Davies.

Barnard, whose father is retired Air Force, first heard about the program from her mother who served as a dental assistant volunteer years ago.

“The most rewarding part of the program has been the onthe-job training,” Barnard said.

“I have been able to learn so much from the hands on experience.”

Davies, a military spouse, hopes to become a dental hygienist and took advantage of this program to get into the field and learn as much as she can before continuing her education.

as a dental hygienist and I have loved having the opportunity to learn so much about the dental field,” Davies said.

Both volunteers highly recommend the program to anyone interested in the dental field and said it is the best way to get your foot in the door.

“The dental assistant volunteers do a lot for the squadron,” Dunston said. “We all appreciate how they are willing to give their time to learn a trade while also stepping in to help the squadron complete its mission each day.”

October marks the 15th annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month at Joint Base LangleyEustis.

The Department of Homeland Security hosts the awareness month through a collaborative effort between government and industry to ensure every American has the resources they need to stay safe and secure online.

People are constantly connected and interacting with the world through technology, often spending anywhere from two to 10 plus hours online.

Using real cybersecurity means consistently making new demands to stay secure in an ever evolving information technology environment.

The cybersecurity realm has many levels of responsibility, from protecting our nation’s critical infrastructure such food and water supplies, to elections, all the way down to your personal identity or Social Security numbers.

From every corner of the world, there are new threats, new vulnerabilities and new attacks to address.

Knowledge is power and being proactive is the key to preventing network attacks and system failures.

Whether you’re at work or at home, if you do not pay attention to where your information is going, who is using your data, or upgrade your security regularly you put yourself and others at risk.

HELPFUL TIPS WHEN ACCESSING ANY NETWORK DEVICE: • • • • • • • • • • •

Create strong passwords: 8-15 characters or more for home use. Military should use a minimum of 15 characters. Include upper and lower case letters, special characters and numbers to make them stronger.

Protect your personally identifiable information. Shred old documents with social security numbers on them or bank/credit card statements. For current documents lock them in drawers or cabinets for safe keeping.

Never leave devices unattended with your common access card in your device. For home use, set your device to use lock screens when unattended.

Avoid phishing scams or any suspicious emails. Report these emails to your unit cybersecurity liaison.

Install anti-virus protection on your home computers.

Be prepared for virus attack and network response. Use the 633rd ABW Computer Incident Response Aid at work, or run an anti-virus scan on your home computer.

Pay Attention to current trends/threats in the cyber security community Classified means classified. Do not send classified information through unclassified emails. Report any violations to your unit security manager and your unit CSL. Encrypt emails when necessary especially for PII/for official use only information.

Read the terms of service and agreements. Understand what companies are doing with your data and if they sell that information to third parties.

Install software updates and patches regularly.

JBLE Soldiers, Airmen load up on deployment readiness

633RD AIR BASE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS AND 7TH TRANSPORTATION BRIGADE (EXPEDITIONARY) JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, VA.

U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the 11th Transportation Battalion, 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) and U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron participated in a joint training exercise at Joint Base LangleyEustis, Oct. 15-21, 2018.

Soldiers from Fort Story, Fort Lee and Fort Eustis participated in pre-deployment operations training, which included arrival and departure air eld control group operations at Langley Air Force Base and rail load and sling load training at Fort Eustis.

Members from Fort Story’s 119th Inland Cargo Transfer Company analyzed each unit’s ability to execute air deployment procedures.

Soldiers from the battalion conducted a joint inspection with the 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron prior to staging on the ight line. After the load was checked, Soldiers loaded their equipment on a U.S. Air Force C-5M Super Galaxy from Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, 9th Airlift Squadron.

“The training is very realistic because we have a real aircraft on the ground,” said U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Makayla Rose, 119th ICTC, 11th Bn., 7th Trans. Bde. (Ex.) 2nd Platoon leader and of cer in charge of the training. “We are going through all the requirements as if we were going through a deployment through the small air terminal at Langley.”

According to Rose, the participating units typically partake in simulated training and she believes this exercise was particularly impactful because the physical learning environment enabled Soldiers to fully grasp practices and procedures which will help them in the future when they are tasked with a real world mission and assist with building a stronger relationship between the Army and Air Force.

a helicopter, adding the capability of moving equipment ship-to-shore. The training was set up to allow the unit to become pro cient in ship-to-shore movement of cargo and equipment and improve the unit’s Logistic Over the Shore capabilities.

“The training perfects the ship-toshore capability,” said 1st Lt. Carlos Botero, 11th Trans. Bn., 7th Trans. Bde. (Ex.) plans of cer. “Soldiers get handson training which improves familiarity.”

Soldiers from the 119th ICTC conducted the rail loading operation site as companies within the battalion were tasked to upload and download six pieces of equipment on the railcar at Hanks Yard at Fort Eustis. Earlier in the year, Soldiers went to Fort Erwin, California for training to become certied in rail load operations.

“We haven’t done a lot of rail load training, which leaves a gap,” Staff Sgt. Ethan Severance, 119th ICTC, 11th Bn., transportation management coordinator and NCO in charge of the training. “Not a lot of Soldiers get a chance to conduct the training. The training lls in that gap and is a great opportunity for the Soldiers and the unit as a whole.”

The Soldiers at the rail load training were in charge of driving the vehicles on the railcars, tying the vehicles to the railcar and eventually unloading the car.

“The training is a remarkable opportunity, add to that working with sister services, and it brings the training to another level,” said Lt. Col. Damien Boffardi, 11th Trans. Bn., 7th Trans. Bde. (Ex.) commander. “Being able to go and do allows us to identify strengths, and where and what we need to build on. It also brings awareness, a level of understanding, and allows Soldiers to become experts in their craft.”

The training will conclude with a two-week eld training exercise to prepare Soldiers within the battalion for future deployments.

Populations of North American bird species that pose hazards to aviation have increased dramatically and many species have adapted to urban environments, including Canada geese, brown pelicans, gulls, bald eagles and vultures.

Though managing the habitat is important, dispersal of wildlife remains a critical part of the program.

Permits with federal and state government allow BASH program personnel to trap and relocate wildlife away from the airfield.

They also carry out studies on how long it takes birds to come back and how far away they must be taken to not come back at all.

“There are also 16 propane cannons around the airfield and we have one of the more advanced systems, the Scare Wars system,” Carr said. “Some of them have speakers that make bird in distress sounds and all of them have

the ability to discharge a propane driven bang.”

Along with the propane cannons, the team uses non-lethal pyrotechnics and sound emitting equipment to scare off birds as well as spikes on the flightline approach lights to prevent birds from perching near takeoff and landing paths.

The last option is to kill wildlife; it has been done before with the appropriate permits, but only when it is completely unavoidable.

Since 1985, Langley AFB has experienced over 600 recorded wildlife strikes at a cost of over $6.5 million in repairs to aircraft. This cost doesn’t take into account labor, downtime or the risk of loss of life.

“We had a strike last year, as a matter of fact, where we struck multiple shore birds,” Carr said.

“With 5th generation aircraft everything is expensive, and the cost was over $2.5 million for one bird strike.”

These are figures that officials at Langley AFB have had to grow accustomed to.

“Unfortunately that has become the new norm, when you had bird strikes 10-15 years ago it was hard to reach a million dollars,” Carr said.

“But we start adding that 5th generation element and the price goes up.”

The BASH program is required

by Air Force Instruction to develop a Bird Hazard Working Group for all wildlife strikes to be reported and recorded.

After an incident is reported, everything from blood samples to feathers are gathered, documented and sent to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, District of Columbia, by the team.

At the Smithsonian Institute, they have a feather identification lab and specialize in bird strike identification backed by a large DNA and feather databank.

“Over time, data points are gathered and studied,” Carr said.

“With that information, we can say things like ‘hey, we are striking a

lot of species A, what’s driving that species to want to be here?’ and that’s kind of how you longterm maintain changes to the airfield to prevent bird strikes.”

At the end of the day, some bird strikes are avoidable while others aren’t. According to Carr, sometimes maintaining the airfield for one kind of bird will attract another kind of bird; it’s important to think about which bird poses a greater threat and develop an accurate risk assessment.

“The BASH program is an essential operation for the safety and success of Langley AFB’s 1st FW-the first enemy our pilots encounter should not be the local wildlife,” said James Powell USDA/ WS southeast district supervisor.

The city of Yorktown and Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia celebrated the 237th anniversary of the victory at Yorktown Oct. 19, 2018.

Every year, Yorktown hosts a parade in remembrance of the Battle of Yorktown with formations from the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Marines and the U.S. Navy. In addition to the parade, community members and U.S. Armed Forces leaders attended a wreath-laying ceremony, a 3rd Infantry Old Guard Fife and

Drum performance and a Revolutionary War guided tour.

“The military participation in events like the Yorktown Day parade is important because it gives our nation a sense of security,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Alexander Bustard, Langley Honor Guard superintendent. “They want to know that their defense is in good hands--seeing a traditional marching performance gives them that security. Seeing our youngest and bravest carry on the spark of legacies past is inspirational to every spectator.”

Approximately 1000 people were

attendance for the celebration and over 1000 military and civilian personnel participated in the parade.

According to Mike Byrd, Colonial National Historical Park Yorktown Day coordinator, celebrating Yorktown day is important due to the historical impact the Siege of Yorktown had for the United States. The victory allowed the United States to pursue freedom from Britain and become an independent nation. With the surrender of General Charles Cornwallis to the colonial forces, it lead to the eventual surrender of the British army and the colonies gaining their independence.

The Battle of Yorktown happened on September 28, 1781 in Yorktown, Virginia. General George Washington commanded a French and Continental 17,000-troop force against a British force of 9,000 troops.

Tricare Prime Suffolk opens summer 2018

Traffic calming serpentine

In accordance with Department of Defense guidance regarding defending installations, Fort Eustis will implement a traffic calming serpentine as a measure to increase the installation’s security posture May 1, 2018, on Washington Blvd outbound lanes. The serpentine will reduce the number of outbound lanes from three to two. This will impact outbound traffic, especially during rush hour. The serpentine will remain in place until completion of the Active Vehicle Barrier project which is expected in the month of August 2018.

Pharmacist Cough and Cold Clinic

The Langley Hospital will provide a Pharmacist Cough and Cold Clinic starting Feb. 12, 2018. Patients who cannot get an appointment with their provider right away and do not want to wait at the ER can check in at the Family Health front desk to be seen by a clinical pharmacist on a walk-in basis, Monday through Friday from 8 to 10 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Service is available to all active duty and Department of Defense beneficiaries 18 to 70 years of age who are enrolled to Langley Hospital. Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA gate) changes

Security Forces personnel will no longer man the Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA Gate). Personnel will still have their credentials checked by guards at the main NASA gate, however, their credentials will not be checked again at the Durand Entry Control Facility. NASA guards will still man their side of the Durand Entry Control Facility and will only allow CAC holders (no dependent ID cards) to enter NASA property. Additionally, no commercial vehicles are allowed access to NASA property.

Manpower shortage impacts 633rd Medical Group services

The 633rd Medical Group strives to provide Trusted Care to all they serve, while supporting many deployed and home-station missions. Due to contract vacancies and multiple provider deployments/permanent changes of station during the coming months, it will take longer to receive appointments and have messages returned. In light of these staffing concerns, TRICARE will temporarily enroll only Active Duty service members and their family members. This action is being taken to ensure patients receive the care they deserve within the established standards.
