Some might say there’s no feeling like the nervousness felt right before taking a physical fitness test. Even those who are in tip-top shape feel the pressure to perform at the highest possible standards.

From fitness classes to their food choices, Joint Base Langley-Eustis Force Support goes above and beyond to educate and encourage JBLE members to choose healthier lifestyle options and improve their overall performance.

“The first person to care about their well-being should be the service member, because he or she knows they are required to maintain fitness levels to stay in the (military),” said John Hickok, 633rd Force Support Squadron Langley Air Force Base fitness director. “Leadership should care because we are trying to retain our people and keep them fit to fight.

Then it’s our responsibility at Force Support to offer programs that can help accommodate those goals.”

The Back to Basics course, an official U.S. Air Force program, and the Correct and Re-implement course, a U.S. Army certified program, are available to U.S. Air Force Airmen and U.S. Army Soldiers who may need help meeting fitness standards, or just want to improve their overall health and wellness.

In Back to Basics, trainers provide a tailored physical training plan focusing on the major components of the physical training tests; sit-ups, push-ups and the cardiovascular component. The free, eight-week course works to correct and improve attendees’ form, teach breathing and stretching techniques while also encouraging smarter everyday choices.

stabilizing the body.

“It’s a tool people can use to improve their lives,” said Justin Davis, 633rd Force Support Squadron Fort Eustis fitness director. “We teach military members how to understand their body’s needs and limits and are decreasing the amount of injuries through proper form and technique.

If they get hurt now, they will just continue to build performance on top of dysfunction which leads to lifelong injuries.”

To stay in shape and perform, Airmen and Soldiers also have to keep the body fueled. Thankfully, they can find nutritional options at both dining facilities to help them stay on track.

The dining facilities follow a “Go for Green,” or G4G, point-of-decision labeling system to provide service members with a quick assessment of menu offerings using “stop light”-style labels.

According to the system, “Green” items are foods Airmen and Soldiers should eat often, including fewer calories, less fat and sodium, and more fiber. “Yellow” items are suggested for occasional consumption, and contain

an average number of calories. “Red” items should be eaten rarely, and include foods high in calories, sugar, fats and sodium.

“We strive to keep our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines healthy and full of energy to be able to conduct the day-to-day mission,” said U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Jamie Accoo, 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) dining facility manager. “Our menu is being constantly updated to suit the needs of our service members and we suggest everyone come check it out.”

Along the serving line, each item will feature a color-coded decal to classify it in accordance with the G4G system. Posters and table placards describing the program and offering recommendations to diners are displayed throughout the facilities.

Through improving the understanding of both physical fitness and nutrition, Airmen and Soldiers can better achieve goals with the help of JBLE fitness professionals and dining facility staff.

Taking advantage of your educational benefits

For U.S. Air Force Airmen, there are ways to progress and become the “model Airman,” through career development courses, temporary duty opportunities and training. They can also use some of these benefits to improve not only their careers, but their personal goals. Thanks to military education centers, they can grab their backpacks and head to school.

Service members have an abundance of educational benefits available to them to pay for education. For fiscal year 2017 alone, the Air Force paid over $4 million to Airmen for school.

Through the education office, Airmen are able use these benefits not only to advance in their careers, but also in their personal life as well.

Whether an Airman is planning on staying in for one enlistment or a full 20 years, the benefits for their personal growth through education is only a few steps away.

According to Ronald Duquette, 633rd Force Support Squadron education services supervisor, many Airmen come into the U.S. Air Force to start or complete their education. For some reason however, some are not starting or completing their educational goals.

“Tuition Assistance is (there) to help Airmen professionally for their military career and civilian career,” said Duquette. “They can use it for an associates, bachelors and masters degree. They can also use it for certifications that are related to their career field.”

Airmen are able to use TA after attending a TA briefing at the Education Center on Langley Air Force

Base. The briefing covers the rules of engagement for using TA such as establishing a plan or goal before applying, what the goal covers, grade point average requirements, and timelines when Airmen can apply.

According to Duquette, setting a goal before applying for TA is important because members are only allowed up to one degree change per degree level after their initial degree goal is submitted. Setting a goal will help Airmen focus and ensure they stay motivated and are going to school for something they enjoy.

Setting personal goals is meant to not only help the Airmen using TA, but their families as well.

“TA benefits the family of the Airman because the Airman is gaining knowledge for their careers outside of the Air Force, if they decide to separate; or gaining knowledge for their jobs,” said Duquette.

“Being knowledgeable in their (career field) can mean promotions, ribbons and awards.”

While a lot of Airmen come into the Air Force meaning to start school, some are probably anxious according to Duquette.

“Some people probably think they aren’t prepared enough to start school,” said Duquette. “I advise them to just take one course starting off. Make it something you enjoy doing and chip away with it a little at a time.

If you don’t start, you will never get done. I understand that some jobs are difficult and take up some time, but you have to stay committed.”

For U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Celeste Elliott, 633rd Security Forces Squadron installation entry controller, the education briefings took away some of the worries associated with starting something new.

us all the basic information like what the funding is for us, and other options such as CLEP/DANTES tests.”

Elliott just finished her career development courses and took her first step towards pursuing a higher education level by going to the tuition assistance briefing. Duquette encourages other Airmen to do the same.

“Your future is like a car,” said Duquette. “If your car is in reverse, you’ll go backwards. If the car is in neutral, you might stay stable unless you’re on a decline. If you have your car even in just the first gear, you’ll start moving slowly and over time you’ll be surprised how far you can go.”

JBLE unit partners with FEMA in Puerto Rico humanitarian mission

PONCE, PUERTO RICO -Military Sealift Command’s USNS Brittin arrived at the Port of Ponce, Puerto Rico, Nov. 3, 2017, loaded with power-generation equipment and other supplies after Hurricane Maria left the majority of the island without power in September.

Brigade based at Joint Base LangleyEustis, Va., were waiting ashore to unload 500 pieces of equipment including generators, temporary living facilities, food and water.

JBLE’s Soldiers partnered with U.S. Navy Cargo Handling Battalion One from Williamsburg, Virginia; the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other agencies to unload the 964-foot vessel before distributing the supplies to various areas across the island.

“My Soldiers are in charge of maintaining accountability here within the port and coordination for onward movement out onto the island,” said U.S. Army Maj. Brett Dunning, 690th Rapid Port Opening Element, 832nd Trans. Battalion, 597th Trans. Brigade commander. “We want to start off getting the power turned back on to the

rest of the island, and offloading all of these generators is the first step.”

The Brittin is one of the largest ships in the MSC fleet and the first to arrive in Puerto Rico bringing a large shipment of power-generation capabilities, including bucket trucks, which will be used to restore the power grid across the island.

Working alongside FEMA, USACE and the DoD, were stevedores, local dockworkers hired to unload the vessel in a safe and timely manner.

“This was a port that hasn’t been operational for over 10 years so this is bringing jobs back to Ponce as well as bringing power,” said Dunning.

“It’s an awesome opportunity for the local community to be a part of this humanitarian disaster relief mission.”

While at the port, Soldiers were given an opportunity to deliver 18 pallets of water to the city of Jayuya, a community still without power or access to clean water.

“It was really an eye-opening experience for my Soldiers to see just how much the people of Puerto Rico are still struggling, and how much they appreciate the help and support we are providing,” said Staff Sgt. she cried and told him ‘thank you’ in Spanish — he started crying too because it touched his heart.”

Soldiers from the 597th will stay at the port once the Brittin leaves, unloading other vessels as they arrive over the coming days. The Brittin will travel several more times throughout November and December between Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina and Puerto Rico with additional generators, power poles and other supplies necessary to help those on the island

still struggling without power or regular access to food, clean water and other necessities.

“All of the Department of Defense is involved in this movement, along with a lot of private contractors including FEMA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,” said Sgt. Uncovering time: Archeologists perform excavations at Eustis

A team made up of 733rd Civil Engineer Division Environmental Element archeologists and other contractors excavated on Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., Oct. 30 to Nov. 3, 2017, to determine its historic signiďŹ cance.

Sifting through dirt, these archeologists searched for artifacts and soil-pattern changes, hoping to uncover hints about the lives of those who resided in the area long ago Excavations on military installations like this one help archeologist provide advice to installation leadership on proper methods for maintaining these areas depending on their signiďŹ cance.

After referencing installation records and maps provided by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, the archeological team began dig testing, creating a one-square-meter hole approximately 25 to 50 feet apart, to look for artifacts.

One of the archeologists uncovered a few artifacts, including ceramic pieces and rubble, dating back to the 20th century, leading the team to question more about area. “Most of the records for the area were burned, so the only way to learn about these people is to dig them up,â€? said Tiffany Raszick, a contracted senior ďŹ eld archeologist. “We are ďŹ nding so few artifacts here, and sometimes the things we don’t ďŹ nd tells us something too. It

may mean when the people abandoned this site they probably took mostly everything with them, and more so, didn’t have much to begin with.�

According to Dr. Christopher McDaid, 733rd CED Environmental Element cultural resources manager and archeologist, the signiďŹ cance of Fort Eustis’ archaeological sites is considered when planning construction projects on the installation. “All these sites we have are places where American history happened,â€? said McDaid. “Since we are charged

with protecting and preserving it, we need to know what we have so we don’t inadvertently destroy that history.

I think it’s important to understand the history of the place (where) you are, and see that you are part of a long continuum of American history at Joint Base Langley-Eustis.�

With 234 different archeological sites on Fort Eustis, the 733rd CED archeological team has the potential to yield signiďŹ cant historical ďŹ ndings which may be eligible for registry at national museums.

Vision ready, mission ready

Staying fit to fight is important for all service members, and it has many parts to it, including one that may be overlooked, eye health.

From the pilots and air crew, who fly and maintain the fighter jets that soar the skies, to the defenders who operate weapons and verify credentials at the gate, all Airmen need healthy vision to support the U.S. Air Force’s missions.

At the Langley Air Force Base Optometry Clinic, a five-person team helps maintain eye care for Joint Base Langley-Eustis Airmen.

“It is recommended to get an eye exam annually,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jonghwan Kim, 633rd Aerospace Medicine Squadron optometry NCO in charge. “Early detection is key to treating most eye diseases. For those wearing glasses, update your prescription annually as part of your readiness.”

The team at the Optometry Clinic is dedicated to making sure Airmen have 20/20 vision whether it be by corrective lenses, contacts or eye surgery. According

to Kim, any personnel ready to deploy should take the proper measures to make sure they are able to see 100 percent clear in the combat zone. he team sees about 15 patients a day per optometrist.

If a patient isn’t able to see 20/20, they check to see if their eyesight can be corrected to 20/20 with glasses.

During an eye exam, the technicians and optometrists check general ocular health, field of vision and color vision.

“We do everything we can to make sure the patient gets the best possible service that we can give,” said Charlie Felix, 633rd AMDS Red Cross volunteer. “We’ll take the extra step to make sure their eye health is in great condition and they’re happy.”

Every active duty Airman is entitled to one eye exam a year and issued two pairs of glasses with their prescription. While preparing to deploy, Airmen are also issued gas mask inserts and ballistic eyewear inserts.

Should a pair of glasses not fit properly, adjustments and orders, with a current prescription, are made on a walk-in basis. If military issued glasses break, Airmen are also reissued a new pair.

In addition to taking advantage of these offered services, the Optometry Clinic recommends members take the following precautions to care for their eyes: - While outside, wear sunglasses with UV protection.

- Be sure to get an eye exam annually.

- Wear your prescribed pair of glasses. If it’s a new prescription, wear them two hours daily for two weeks

Within nine months the 13-member U.S. Air Force Raptor Demonstration Team supported more than 20 air shows in four countries and 16 states; ending the 2017 season at the Aviation Nation Air and Space Expo at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.

The demonstration team exists to educate current and future generations on the long-term importance of the U.S. Air Force and its airpower, while also enhancing community and international relations. Additionally, the team honors the sacrifices of those currently serving as well as the sacrifices of those who served before them.

“It was such an honor to be a part of the 2017 demonstration team,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. James Fleming, F-22 Raptor Demo Team chief. “We are fortunate to showcase the best aircraft in the world to the public and showcase the awesome jobs we have in the Air Force.”

The team consists of, four dedicated crew chiefs, three avionics specialists, a weapons loader, aircrew flight equipment specialist, public affairs specialist, team chief, team superintendent and demonstration pilot.

“These last two years have been the best of my Air Force career,” said Staff Sgt. Robert Rodriguez, F-22 Raptor Demo Team AFE specialist. “Being able to travel the world and meet the different demonstration teams from the U.S. and overseas, was a great experience.”

During the 2017 season, the team showcased the fifthgeneration aircraft in places it had never previously performed.

F-22 RAPTOR DEMO TEAM | 13-member U.S. Air

Force Raptor Demonstration Team supported more than 20 air shows in four countries and 16 states CONTINUED FROM 9 “It was awesome to see the reactions of people seeing the Raptor for the first time,” said Fleming. “I have been a part of the F-22 program for the last 12 years (as a dedicated crew chief). I have become used to being around Raptors. It makes me proud to see the ‘awe’ when people see the Raptor demo for the first time.”

The Raptor made an appearance for the second time at the Royal International Air Tattoo this year. The U.S. Air Force’s 70th Anniversary was highlighted during their time there by displaying its lineage and advancements in military aircraft with static displays and aerial demonstrations. However, the United Kingdom was not the only overseas trip the team made.

“My favorite part of the team was

seeing and experiencing different places like Australia, South Korea and all over the states while showcasing the F-22 Raptor,” said Rodriguez. “If it wasn’t for the demo team I probably wouldn’t have had the chance to go to some of those places.”

While at the different shows, team members had the opportunity to interact with the public, through media outlets, community engagements or when they visited the team’s tent, where they learned about the Air Force and the F-22 Raptor.

“The team not only instills confidence in the Air Force,” said Fleming. “But makes the American public proud of their Armed Forces and what we are doing to protect freedom.

The team’s final show for the 2017 season is at the Nov. 11 and 12 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.

President Trump speaks to troops in Japan

WASHINGTON — U.S. and Japanese service members standing shoulder to shoulder have made Yokota Air Base one of the most capable operational bases in Japan and in the world, President Donald J. Trump said in a troop talk there, Nov. 5.

The president has embarked upon an Indo-Pacific trip of numerous nations such as Japan, China, Vietnam and the Philippines. But, “there’s no single place I’d rather begin my trip than right here with all with you, the incredible men and women of the United States military [and] your amazing partners, the [Air Defense Command of the Japan Air SelfDefense Force],” Trump said.

Japan is a treasured partner and crucial ally of the United States, he said, adding his thanks for “decades of wonderful friendship between our two nations.”

A CRITICAL CENTER Yokota Air Base serves as a critical center for coordination between American and Japanese commanders as they plan their missions, the president said.

“For almost 60 years, the military alliance we see on this base has endured [as] a cornerstone of sovereignty, security and prosperity for our nations, this region and indeed, the entire world,” Trump told the audience.

“Today we pay tribute to that legacy — a legacy you protect and grow each and every day,” he said.

The 27th and 94th Aircraft Maintenance Units each provided a three-man team that competed for the “3rd Quarter Top Weapons Load Crew” title at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Nov. 3, 2017.

During the competition, the teams were evaluated on their capability to accomplish a successful weapons load on a U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor.

Any infractions that were seen during the load were counted and deducted from their total time after they completed the competition.

“Weapons load competitions offer an opportunity for our weapons personnel to sharpen their skills against the best weapon loaders across the 1st Maintenance Group and possibly the Air Force, “ said U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Christopher Shaver, 1st Maintenance Group weapons loading manager.

“All while showcasing their extraordinary and professional talents to the wings.”

After the evaluation team tallied up all of the points, the 27th AMU came out on top. There will be one more competition this year before the annual winner is determined.

PEACE, STRENGTH Free nations must be strong nations and the United States welcomes their allies’ renewal of their commitments to peace through strength, the president said. “We seek peace and stability for the nations of the world, including those right here in

this region.”

Like their predecessors, today’s service members are brave warriors who are the last bulwark against threats to the dreams of people in America, Japan and across the world, Trump said.

The U.S. military comprises the greatest hope for people who desire to live in freedom and harmony, and they are the greatest threat to tyrants and dictators who seek to prey on the innocent, he said.

“As Americans celebrate Veterans’ Day this month, we honor all who have sacrificed to make peace and stability possible,” Trump said, adding the United States pays tribute to every proud American who has worn the uniform and served the nation.

“Today, many nations of the IndoPacific are thriving because of the sacrifices made by American service members and our allies,” the president said, “and because of the sacrifices all of you continue to make each and every day.”

Trump Warns North Korean Leader Not to Underestimate U.S.South Korean Will

WASHINGTON, Nov. 7, 2017 — President Donald J. Trump warned North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un tonight not to underestimate the will and power of the United States and urged him to rid his country of nuclear weapons.

Trump, who spoke before the National Assembly in the South Korean capital of Seoul, said the United States stands with South Korea in opposing the North.

The president, in the midst of a trip through Asia, said North Korea has pursued its nuclear weapons and missile programs “in defiance of every assurance, agreement and commitment it has made to the United States and its allies.”

North Korea promised to freeze its plutonium program in 1994.

It did not. “In 2005, after years of diplomacy, the dictatorship agreed to ultimately abandon its nuclear programs and return to the treaty on nonproliferation,” Trump said. “But it never did. And worse, it tested the very weapons it said it was going to give up.”

In 2009, the United States again offered to negotiate with North Korea.

The regime answered by sinking the South Korean navy ship Cheonan, killing 46 sailors. “To this day, it continues to launch missiles over the sovereign territory of Japan and all other neighbors, test nuclear devices, and develop ICBMs to threaten the United States itself,” the president said.

‘We Will Defend Our Common Security’ “The regime has interpreted America’s past restraint as weakness.

This would be a fatal miscalculation,” Trump said. “Today I hope I speak not only for our countries, but for

all civilized nations when I say to the North: Do not underestimate us.

And do not try us. We will defend our common security, our shared prosperity, and our sacred liberty.”

The 38th parallel that separates North and South Korea is the line “between peace and war, between decency and depravity, between law and tyranny, between hope and total despair,” the president said.

The line has been drawn by other oppressors in the past, and holding that line is the choice free nations have made through history, Trump said.

“We have learned together the high cost of weakness and the high stakes of its defense,” he added. “America’s men and women in uniform have given their lives in the fight against Nazism, imperialism, communism and terrorism. America does not seek conflict or confrontation. But we will never run from it.”

Trump said the United States will not let itself or its allies be blackmailed or attacked. “We will not allow American cities to be threatened with destruction,” he said. “We will not be intimidated. And we will not let the worst atrocities in history be repeated here on this ground we fought and died so hard to secure.”

Trump flatly stated that the time for excuses is over and that now is the time for strength. “If you want peace, you must stand strong at all times,” he said.

“The world cannot tolerate the menace of a rogue regime that threatens with nuclear devastation.”

U.S.-SOUTH KOREAN WILL | Trump urges North Korean

dictator Kim Jong Un to rid his country of nuclear weapons in speech to the National Assembly in Seoul CONTINUED FROM 14 resolutions, downgrade diplomatic relations with the regime, and sever all ties of trade and technology. “It is our responsibility and our duty to confront this danger together, because the longer we wait, the greater the danger grows and the fewer the options become,” he said.

Trump addressed the North Korean leader directly, saying the weapons he is building are not making his regime more secure, but rather are putting it in grave danger. “Every step you take down this dark path increases the peril you face,” Trump said.

Despite all the crimes committed by the regime since 1950, the nations of the world will offer a path to a better future for the North Korean people, the president said. “[The path] begins with an end to the aggression of your regime, a stop to your development of ballistic

missiles, and complete, verifiable, and total denuclearization,” he said.

South Korea stands in stark contrast to the North, Trump said. “In just a few decades, with only the hard work, courage, and talents of your people, you turned this war-torn land into a nation blessed with wealth, rich in culture and deep in spirit,” he said. “You built a home where all families can flourish and where all children can shine and be happy.”

South Korea is an independent, confident, peace-loving and respected nation, and is a strong ally of the United States, Trump said. “We are nations that respect our citizens, cherish our liberty, treasure our sovereignty, and control our own destiny,” he added. “We affirm the dignity of every person and embrace the full potential of every soul. And we are always prepared to defend the vital interests of our people against the cruel ambition of tyrants.”

North Korea Situation Requires Worldwide Action, Trump Says

WASHINGTON, Nov. 7, 2017 — North Korea constitutes a worldwide threat that requires worldwide action, President Donald J. Trump said today in a press conference with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the Blue House in Seoul.

“We call on every responsible nation, including China and Russia, to demand that the North Korean regime end its nuclear weapons and its missile programs and live in peace,” the president said in one of two joint press conferences during his trip to Asia. “As the South Korean people know so well, it’s time to act with urgency and with great determination.”

Trump called for all nations to put into effect U.N. Security Council regulations and to cease trade and business entirely with North Korea.

“It is unacceptable that nations would help to arm and finance this increasingly dangerous regime,” he emphasized.

South Korea has been a long-standing U.S. ally, and North Korea’s threats cannot be allowed to threaten that partnership, Trump said. “Our alliance is more important than ever to peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and across the Indo-Pacific region,” he added.

Mutual Defense Treaty “In the more than six decades since we signed our mutual defense treaty, our alliance has grown stronger and deeper. Our two nations symbolize what independent countries can accomplish when they serve the interests of their people, respect the sovereignty of their neighbors and uphold the rule of law,” Trump said of the U.S.-South Korea alliance.

“Together, our two nations will handle threats to peace and security, stand up to those who would threaten our freedom and boldly seize the incredible opportunities for a better, brighter and more prosperous tomorrow,” he said.

In good times and bad, in moments of great hardship and great success, both nations can always count on the close bonds and deep friendship they share as free, proud and independent people, the president said of the alliance.

“Imagine the amazing possibilities for a Korean Peninsula liberated from the threat of nuclear weapons,

where all Koreans could enjoy the blessings of liberty and the prosperity that you have achieved right here in South Korea,” Trump said.

Call for Denuclearization Talks Moon said the United States and his country strongly urge North Korea to halt its nuclear and missile provocation, and to come to a dialogue table for denuclearization as soon as possible.

“President Trump and I reaffirmed our current strategy, which is to maximize pressure and sanctions on North Korea until it gives up nuclear weapons and to come to the table for dialogue on its own,” the South Korean president said.

“At the same time, should North Korea choose to make the right choice, we also reaffirmed our view that we are willing to offer North Korea a bright future,” Moon said.

Camp Humphreys Visit Earlier in the day, the two presidents visited Camp Humphreys at Pyeongtaek to visit U.S. and South Korean service members.

Trump said South Korea’s military is strong, and the U.S. military will soon be at its strongest level.

“We’re committed to spending $700 billion, and that number may even go up. For our military, we’re ordering new jet fighters [and] new equipment of virtually every kind,” the president said to Moon. “We make the finest equipment in the world, and you’re buying a lot of it, and we appreciate that.”

Organ donation bolsters bond between classmates

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AFNS) — Col. Dave Ashley’s schedule since May 2017 included climbing a mountain, completing a 40-mile trail run, competing in a multiday athletic event that included bicycling and kayaking and achieving a perfect score on his military physical fitness test, his seventh in a row.

Ashley accomplished all of these feats after donating a kidney. What began as an impulse to help a desperately ill former classmate has turned into a campaign to make sure other service members know the Military Health System supports those who want to become living organ donors.

“I worried I might get pushback because I’m an active duty, senior officer,” Ashley said. “But I received outstanding help from my flight doc and the entire medical chain of command as I went through the process.”

According to the National Kidney Foundation, more than 100,000 people in the U.S. are on the waiting list for kidney donation. For many, time runs out. On average, 13 people die each day while waiting for a kidney transplant, according to U.S. Department of Health & Human Services data.

Chris Connelly was close to becoming part of that statistic. The U.S. Military Academy graduate and five-year veteran of the Army’s 101st Airborne Division was in seemingly excellent health until the fall of 2015.

“I’d been gradually gaining weight, and my legs were swollen,” said Connelly, who works in the financial services industry in New York. “I couldn’t figure out why because I ate

healthy and exercised regularly. I’d had a physical six months earlier and everything was fine.”

During a weekend at West Point with his wife and young son, a walk on a campus trail left him struggling for breath and nauseated. After returning home, he went to his physician’s office.

Blood tests showed high creatine levels.

Creatine is a chemical waste byproduct of normal muscle function and usually is filtered by the kidneys and eliminated through urine. High levels in the blood indicate kidney damage or disease.

Connelly’s doctor recommended he make an appointment with a kidney specialist. But that night, he went into a seizure and was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

“That’s when I found out I had complete and total kidney failure,” Connelly said.

Discharged a week later, he began dialysis, the process of removing toxins and excess water from the blood by machine. It was a grueling schedule: five hours a day, three days a week.

Connelly was a candidate for a kidney transplant, but his parents and two sisters weren’t medically eligible to donate. The wait for a deceased donor kidney was seven years.

By March, Connelly was back in the hospital for two weeks with a lifethreatening blood infection. After recovering, he decided he needed to prepare his family for a future without him.

Unlikely allies help Puerto Rican mother see Soldier son graduate

FORT JACKSON, S.C. — It took “mom-battle buddies,” who met over social media hundreds of miles apart, to gather unlikely allies to help one Puerto Rican mother witness her son graduate Nov. 2 from Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

They like to call themselves “mom-battle buddies” because a chance encounter brought together parents of trainees who happened to battle buddies themselves. Katherine BerriosBorges was looking through the 3rd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment, and Fort Jackson Army Mom’s Facebook pages, when she noticed a picture Jennifer Weaver posted of her son, Pvt. Dakota Haspert, with his battle buddy at Fort Jackson who just happened to be Pvt. Ramon Nazario, her son.

“Oh, it’s my son,” BerriosBorges exclaimed. “It’s my baby.”

The mothers started chatting with each other online and later over the phone, becoming fast friends and “mom-battle buddies.”

“I just wanted to come because he left two voice mails saying, ‘Mom are you OK? I wanted to hear your voice,’” she said. “I wanted to be here so he could see that I was OK …

There was one small, yet significant hurdle she would have to traverse before she could do that — get enough money to purchase plane tickets that cost “over a thousand and some dollars” — money she didn’t have.

Her mom-battle buddy came to the rescue enlisting an ally, the Robert Irvine Foundation, to help raise the money. “I wanted her to get to see him,” Weaver said as she started to tear up. “It’s been amazing” to see the two reunited at Hilton Field, she said.

The foundation, started by celebrity Chef Robert Irvine, is a non-profit organization honoring the men and women

who defend the nation. The foundation bought BerriosBorges the ticket, no questions asked.

That wasn’t the only support Berrios-Borges and her son received. Other mothers began to help in any way they could.

When it was apparent that she couldn’t write her son because of the hurricanes, they began writing Nazario, starting up a liaison between the Soldier and parent.

“I received 20 letters from moms in the support group,” Nazario said after his graduation. The support group sent care packages to him and his mother.

touch” with his mother. “They were really worried.” He knew Puerto Rico was damaged, but not until he graduated did it really hit home.

The outpouring of support strongly affected Fort Jackson officials too.

“Here we have two mothers from very different walks of life come together to echo the battle buddy relationship their sons are developing in basic combat training,” said Nicholas Salcido, Fort Jackson’s social media manager. “The military is often talked about as one big family, but this exactly that sentiment in action; all hyperbole aside.

“This is individuals coming together to provide and support each other without strings attached.”

CONTINUED FROM 18 when he felt well enough. Meantime, two West Point friends suggested posting a notice about living organ donation on the Class of 1997’s closed group Facebook page.

“I said absolutely not,” Connelly said.

“Our class had already been through so much. Too many had died in battle in Iraq or Afghanistan, or come home with missing limbs, or had suffered other significant hardships. I didn’t want to be out there asking for something like this.”

His friends did it anyway.

“I knew who Chris was, but we hadn’t kept in touch after graduation,” said Ashley, then a staff officer in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, who learned about Connelly’s condition from the Facebook post. “Still, the brotherly bond coming from a service academy is strong.

I thought the odds of me being a match were probably pretty slim. But getting tested seemed like the right thing to do.”

Transplant coordinators at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston sent Ashley a testing kit. Ashley asked Col. John Oh, his physician at the Pentagon Flight Medicine Clinic, to help him complete and return it.

“I did the first test, and then a second one and then another one,” Ashley said.

“It got to the point where I finally asked how many people were still involved in the testing process and they said, just me. That’s when I thought, oh boy, I’d better talk with my wife.”

He also needed official permission from the military. Service members who want to become living organ donors must submit a package of documents for approval after they’ve been matched with a recipient. Army and Navy service members’ requests go to the Army Surgeon General’s office. Ashley’s request package was coordinated through the Air Force Medical Operations Agency for review and approval.

The request package must include a letter from the potential donor’s commander granting permission, and a letter from the donor’s primary care physician asserting the potential donor is in excellent health and has been advised of any risks. Those risks include complications after surgery that might

limit or even end military service.

“I thought he’d be a really good candidate because he was in excellent health,” Oh said. “And I wrote that I was honored to do this for him.”

Connelly didn’t know he was getting a transplant until early December 2016, when the transplant coordinator called to say not only had a match been found, but the donor was a former classmate.

Did Connelly want to know who the donor was? Of course he did.

“I immediately recognized the name ‘Dave Ashley,’ and I could even put a face to it,” Connelly said. “West Point cadets remember their classmates – especially those few who branch Air Force.”

The transplant surgery took place in January 2017.

“I felt pretty rough afterward,” Ashley said. “It took about six weeks before I was able to go into work and stay most of the day and focus.”

After several months, Ashley began easing back into his fitness routine as well.

“Sure, there’s a short-term impact to you physically,” said Ashley, senior materiel leader for the Air Force’s Advanced Extremely High Frequency satellite program office at Los Angeles Air Force Base, California. “But I feel completely recovered now. I’m doing all the things I was doing before the surgery.”

Oh notes that when someone donates a kidney, the overall kidney function doesn’t drop by half. Instead, the remaining organ compensates for the loss.

As for Connelly, “I’m doing great, and I feel outstanding,” he said. He’s resumed swimming, running and working, and has returned to New York with his wife and son.

“Being a living donor genuinely saves lives,” Connelly said. “Dave effectively saved my life – and also made a really positive difference for my wife and my child.”

“In the Air Force we talk about our core values: Integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do,” Oh said. “I think someone who donates a kidney is personifying those core values. I would encourage folks that if becoming a living donor is something you want to do, don’t think of military service as a reason why you couldn’t do it.”

Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA gate) changes

Security Forces personnel will no longer man the Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA Gate). Personnel will still have their credentials checked by guards at the main NASA gate, however, their credentials will not be checked again at the Durand Entry Control Facility. NASA guards will still man their side of the Durand Entry Control Facility and will only allow CAC holders (no dependent ID cards) to enter NASA property. Additionally, no commercial vehicles are allowed access to NASA property. The Durand Entry Control Facility hours are from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Manpower shortage impacts 633rd Medical Group services

The 633rd Medical Group strives to provide Trusted Care to all they serve, while supporting many deployed and home-station missions.
