Family builds bond through love for horses

“That was the one negotiation that came with marrying into the military,” Tiffany Wisley said. “If my horse can’t come, it’s not going to work.”

Tiffany, a veterinarian’s assistant, recalls looking at photos of her father holding her as a baby with her family’s horses. They owned horses all her life and by the time marriage was on the table, she had one of her own--Spooks.

She rescued Spooks a decade ago out of a show barn in Tennessee where his quality of life was not ideal. In return, Spooks helps with her stress and anxiety, and, according to Tiffany, saves her on a daily basis.

“Spooks got me through a lot of hardships in life,” Tiffany said. “Hard family times, my husband’s deploy-

ment to Korea for a year--that was our first deployment. I was pregnant, I lost my dog and he was like my first child ever. He improves my quality of life.”

Growing up, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Cody Wisley, 83rd Network Operations Squadron boundary protection supervisor, didn’t know one day he’d own a horse, let alone two.

Although Cody has owned his horse Steel for only two years, he too finds comfort in the bond he’s formed with him.

“It’s better than having a dog. Having a horse; it’s a different kind of bond,” Cody said. “He just helps me if I’m having a bad day — it’s just nice.”

Although the Wisleys’ children are too young to ride, Tiffany said that she enjoys seeing the spark in her sons’ eyes for the very thing that fuels her passion.

ODU honors military members

Old Dominion University paid tribute to active duty and retired military members during a Monarchs football game in Norfolk, Virginia, Nov. 10, 2018.

The university’s Veterans Day recognition included honoring Joint Base Langley-Eustis military members on the field, a military tribute performance by the ODU Marching Monarchs band and a T-38 Talon flyover at the start of the game.

The game commenced with the U.S. Marine Corps’ color guard presentation of the colors and recognition of U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Brian Graves.

As the Monarchs battled the North Texas Mean Green football team, local military members were also featured on the jumbotron and hailed for their service.

The Wisleys have enjoyed owning horses so much they moved on base to be closer to the stables. They’ve also assumed key roles at the Langley Saddle Club. Cody serves as the clubs’s treasurer, while Tiffany is the primary feeder. She is responsible for all aspects of the horses care when it comes to feeding, medicating, and letting them out each morning and in for the evening.

said. “It’s hard enough being a military spouse. I feel like at times you have to give up so much, so to be able to take your passion with you; I don’t even have words for it.”

According to Cody, the Wisley family usually takes their time at the stables as an opportunity to spend quality time together.

However, he said horse ownership also helps him be a more responsible person — something he and his wife hopes to pass on to their children.

“I love the values it teaches the kids at a very early age,” Tiffany said. “My dad taught us the value of a penny. If we wanted lunch money, we were mucking stalls. If we didn’t clean stalls that day, we didn’t go buy lunch.”

For Tiffany, however, the biggest lesson that can be taught through owning horses is affection.

“I get nothing but love from them. It’s nothing fancy. We

don’t get money from it,” Tiffany said. “It’s the values, respect and love. They make me a better person, hands down, a better mom and a better wife.”

Army approves ‘pinks and greens’ uniform on Veterans Day By: Meghann Myers ARMY TIMES

The Army was able to straighten out its congressionally mandated notification requirements in time to announce on Sunday, Veterans Day, that the much anticipated “Army Greens” will indeed be your next service uniform.

Formerly known as the “pinks and greens,” the World War IIera officers uniform could go Army-wide as soon as 2020, according to a release that was

posted Sunday to the Army’s website but was not shared through any of its social media channels.

“The current Army Blues Uniform will return to being a formal dress uniform, while the Army Greens will become the everyday business-wear uniform for all soldiers,” the release said.

The new uniform will be “costneutral,” according to the Army, though details of the budgeting plan were not immediately available.

Sergeant Major of the Army Dan Dailey told Army Times in September that while higher quality materials translated to a dollar-for-dollar more expensive uniform, the fielding plan would negate some of those extra costs in the aggregate.

For example, the release said, new soldiers will receive the uniform when they reach their first unit of assignment.

This, theoretically, would relieve the cost of issuing and tailoring uniforms for soldiers in basic training who end up dropping out, or whose weight fluctuates, requiring more alterations.

The uniforms are also expected to last longer – about six years, Army spokesman Lt. Col. Isaac Taylor told Army Times.

quality uniform with a longer service life, and we are executing a longer phase-in period to remain cost neutral,” Taylor said, but he did not provide a price breakdown.

The standard uniform set-up will require pants and brown leather oxfords for both men and women. Women will have

the option to wear a pencil skirt and pumps. Everyone will also be able to buy a leather bomber jacket as an outerwear option.

The rest of the Army would have until 2028 to pick up the new uniform, the release said.

U.S. Leaders Salute Fallen Heroes on Armistice Day Centennial in France

The United States renews its sacred obligation to memorialize its fallen heroes on the soil where they rest for eternity, President Donald J. Trump said Nov. 11 at Suresnes American Cemetery in France, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day. “Exactly 100 years ago today, on Nov. 11, 1918, World War I came to an end, thank God. It was a brutal war,” the president said. “Millions of American, French and Allied troops had fought with extraordi-

nary skill and valor in one of the bloodiest conflicts in human history.”

Trump said he came to honor American and French service members who died during the Great War. In the United States, Armistice Day is now known as Veterans Day, Trump said.

Juggling fires and families Calif. aviators make it work

U.S. Army Sgt. Greg Fernandez stepped Monday into the hall of the Sacramento Army Aviation Support Facility to check on fires burning 400 miles away.

Fernandez, a UH-60M Black Hawk crew chief with the California Army National Guard’s Alpha Company, 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 140th Aviation Regiment, deployed Nov. 11 from Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos, in Southern California, to support state agencies battling the deadly Camp Fire in Northern California.

It was two days after his daughter evacuated from her dorm room at California State University, Channel Islands, as the Woolsey Fire encroached upon the Camarillo campus. She tried to return to campus Monday, but another fire threatened the rail line she planned to take.

It’s not the first time Fernandez has deployed to help contain a wildfire while his family was fleeing from another.

“It’s a juggle,” he said.

“That’s the hardest thing.”

In 2014, Fernandez was again battling fires in Northern California while his wife and four children evacuated from fires burning in San Diego. His wife, Jennifer, took their children to her parents’ house and returned to the evacuation area to serve on her employer’s emergency response team.

They’ve endured fires and overseas deployments in the eight years since Fernandez cross-trained to became an aviator, but they make it work.

“I don’t care who you are or what you do, it’s the loved ones at home keeping the home front going, that’s the hardest thing,” he said.

“All I have to say is, ‘hey,’ and she’ll try and make it work. I have two in high school now, and she’ll make sure they get to school. Even when I was deployed in Iraq, for car problems, house problems or dog problems, she made it all work,” he said. “I can never ever thank her

As he headed out the door Sunday morning, Fernandez said Jennifer again echoed her support and understanding for another activation even as it meant he would miss their oldest child’s 21st birthday this week.

“I was getting in my car and my wife

says, ‘you know you love this,’” he said.

She understands his passion for the call and the drive to help.

“What we do is special,” Fernandez said. “Not everyone gets to do this. We get to go out to a multi-million dollar piece of equipment and do good things.”

Fernandez estimates he was deployed to battle blazes for about two months this summer, but the mission and his crew make it worth it.

“I’m very privileged to work here with these guys and to do this,” he said.

“Doing fires is the most rewarding part of this gig, because I’m going to help get someone to go home tonight,” Fernandez said, even as it means being away from home himself.

“Everyone deserves to get to go home.”

the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, participated in the 100th Armistice Day commemoration in Paris at the Arc de Triomphe with Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron and some 80 other heads of state.

Dunford also attended ceremonies at World War I gravesites of U.S. servicemen at Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near the site of the Battle of Belleau Wood in Belleau, France; and the Suresnes American Cemetery located outside Paris.

Victory had come at a terrible cost among the Allied forces, the president said at the Suresnes American Cemetery.

More than 1 million French soldiers and 116,000 American service members had been killed by the war’s end. And millions more were wounded.

Countless would come home bearing the lasting scars of trench warfare and the grisly horrors of chemical weapons.

The course provided attendees the opportunity to explore in-depth communications, trust, teamwork and leadership proficiencies. Welch said while the mission will always come first, there is always room to grow, even in a deployed environment.

SNCOLC is usually hosted by and provided to members of Air Force Reserve Command. Welch, who served as the 932nd Airlift Wing command chief at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, said the contents of the course are rewarding for attendees of all components and countries – not just reserve Airmen.

“This is the perfect PME to host in this environment,” Welch said.

“The class took only two days to complete, and the participants completed the class in addition to their busy work schedules. Beyond the lessons learned in the course itself, SNCOLC enhances our relationships with our coalition partners – which will yield dividends long after we leave the classroom.”

The students weren’t the only ones who learned something during the course, however. Welch, a former PME instructor, said the cadre learned from the international students themselves, allowing them to grow as facilitators.

Welch went on to say hosting the first iteration of SNCOLC is just the first step, and he hopes to host more classes like this in the future, as long as the mission allows it.

One of the coalition partners who graduated the class was Canadian Armed Forces Warrant Officer Patrick Power. He said the class provided valuable insight to the Air Force’s senior enlisted mindset; something he plans on sharing with his peers.

“This course was very interesting and a pleasure to be a part of,” Power said. “The course was informative and it was easy to break the ice with all our partners. I thoroughly enjoyed participating with coalition members. It was definitely a positive experience and I will take the lessons I have learned and apply them when I return home. All coalition forces would benefit from the course – the teamwork and coaching would be beneficial to any participant.”

Army commends JTACs for exceptional mission support in Afghanistan

Two joint terminal attack controllers assigned to the 817th Expeditionary Air Support Operations Squadron were commended by the Army for their achievements in support of joint military operations in Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Stephen Mynatt from the 13th Air Support Operations Squadron at Fort Carson, Colorado, and a senior airman from the 19th Air Support Operations Squadron at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, each received an Army Commendation Medal during their deployment to Bagram and additional regional locations.

“Radios are our weapons,” said Lt. Col. Michael Kump, 817th EASOS commander. “A JTAC’s ability to assess the situation, advise the ground commander, and call in deterrence or firepower is what makes them a force multiplier.”

Mynatt and his fellow JTAC provided crisis response air control and support for Operation Faryab Response. They established an immediate and trusting working relationship with Army Col. Adrian T. Bogart III, the Train, Advise and Assist Command — North deputy commander, leading the response in an ambiguous and highly complex operation

against a determined adversary.

According to their award citations, they directly contributed to preventing the Province of Faryab, Afghanistan from falling under the control of the Taliban.

From Aug. 20-28, Mynatt and his teammate translated commander’s guidance to orchestrate and control fifteen F-16 Fighting Falcon sorties; nine B-1 Lancer bomber sorties; 30 lines of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; nine employments of AH-64 air weapons teams; twelve shows of force; eleven shows of presence and ten kinetic strikes.

As a result of these actions and in conjunction with other Afghan and U.S. forces, the JTACs inflicted extensive battle damage to the Taliban, including the destruction of captured Afghan Army equipment, which would have been a significant tactical advantage to the Taliban in Faryab Province had it fallen under their control.

“It was a team effort with everyone involved, and I wouldn’t have been successful without the dedication of the Resolute Support Tactical Command Post staff,” Mynatt said. “Even with limited resources, I was able to make the best out of just having a map, compass and radio.”

offensively target an extremely dynamic threat, Kump said.

They performed above their scope of responsibility, filling the role of the air liaison officer by connecting various authorities and appropriately applying assets to facilitate an Afghan retrograde, while neutralizing threats across an entire Afghan Province.

“Being able to integrate with an expeditionary Army staff and help them work through tactical and strategic problem sets was a unique experience for us,” the senior airman JTAC from Fort Campbell said. “We were able to advise both the Army and Afghan forces on how to efficiently bring airpower into the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces scheme of maneuver during a critical mission.”

The JTACs’ actions resulted in exceptionally high battle damage to the enemy without civilian casualties, Bogart said.

He called their performance “exceptional, heroic and valorous, and well above the call to duty,” and said their “character, stamina and devotion were unmatched.”

Over the first three days at the onset of the Battle for Faryab, the JTACs managed multiple round-the-clock and sorties simultaneously, and they quickly and accurately provided decision-making criteria to the ground force commander, he added.

“I am extremely proud of these two Airmen and how well they represented the squadron and the Air Force on this nonotice mission,” Kump said.

13 “Their skill and attention to detail turned the tide of the battle in this highly-contested province, enabled the ANDSF to regroup, and forced the Taliban to withdraw from key terrain.”

The 817th EASOS provides close air support command and control, terminal attack control, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance expertise, and weather forecasting and warning capability to rotary-wing task forces, manned/unmanned intelligence platforms, and maneuver units, as well as command headquarters across the combined joint operations area.

Their operations fall under NATO’s Resolute Support mission.

The squadron, a direct-report unit to 9th Air Expeditionary Task Force – Afghanistan, is a tenant unit of the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing.

“The men and women of the 817th (EASOS) rely heavily on the excellent day-to-day support we receive from the 455th,” Kump said.

The 455th is the primary Air Force entity in theater that provides finance, legal, historian, chaplain and many other support functions to the 817th EASOS and other tenant units at Bagram Airfield.

The 817th (EASOS) operationally integrates with the 455th by directing the wing’s A-10s, F-16s and MQ-9s to support ground units and assist with airspace management for the aircraft.

The squadron’s JTACs and tactical air control parties oversee and control wing aircraft during air-to-ground missions, while intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance liaison officers assist ground forces in establishing collection plans and requirements.

“I have the privilege of commanding one of the most unique units in Afghanistan,” said Kump. “We provide many capabilities to the operations in this country and have some extraordinary Airmen executing missions and Army support across the entire country.”

Traffic calming serpentine

In accordance with Department of Defense guidance regarding defending installations, Fort Eustis will implement a traffic calming serpentine as a measure to increase the installation’s security posture May 1, 2018, on Washington Blvd outbound lanes. The serpentine will reduce the number of outbound lanes from three to two. This will impact outbound traffic, especially during rush hour. The serpentine will remain in place until completion of the Active Vehicle Barrier project which is expected in the month of August 2018.

Effective immediately, the hours of operation for the Langley Hospital and Satellite Pharmacies will expand to better serve patients. The Hospital Outpatient Pharmacy will now open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA gate) changes

Security Forces personnel will no longer man the Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA Gate). Personnel will still have their credentials checked by guards at the main NASA gate, however, their credentials will not be checked again at the Durand Entry Control Facility. NASA guards will still man their side of the Durand Entry Control Facility and will only allow CAC holders (no dependent ID cards) to enter NASA property.
