633RD AIR BASE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, VA.

The Air Force Historical Foundation selected the 1st Fighter Wing as the 2018 recipient of the Lt. Gen. James H. “Jimmy” Doolittle Award at the Air Force Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, Nov. 13, 2018.

The Doolittle Award is awarded annually to recognize an exceptional unit that has displayed bravery, determination, discipline, esprit de corps, and superior management of joint operations while accomplishing its mission under extremely difficult and hazardous conditions in multiple conflicts, thus having made a sustained, significant contribution to U.S. Air Force history.

“There are a lot of awards given in the name of Jimmy Doolittle, but I think this one would be particularly important to my grandfather,” said Jonna Doolittle Hoppes, Doolittle Foundation executive director and granddaughter of Gen. James H. “Jimmy” Doolittle. “He didn’t believe that it was ever done by one person, he always believed that it was everyone involved, so to honor an entire unit I think would touch his heart very, very dearly.”

According to Doolittle Hoppes, she feels that looking at the 1st FW’s illustrious history, she thinks her grandfather would be particularly proud to have this award go to them.

“Knowing what the Jimmy Doolittle award represents, it’s a great feeling to realize that we were able to add to the 1st Fighter Wing’s historical accomplishments,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Aaron Shaffer, 1st Maintenance Group lead crew member.

capability to the oldest active fighter squadron to date, the 27th Fighter Squadron, and the second oldest fighter squadron in America’s history, the 94th Fighter Squadron, is a humbling feeling.”

The maintainers of the 1st FW set the standard for low observable and aircraft maintenance, both of which establish the unit as the most capable and combat ready F-22 Raptor wing in the Air Force.

“As America’s oldest Fighter Wing, our legacy is an important reminder to all of our Airmen as they accomplish the mission at home and while deployed,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Jason Hinds, 1st FW commander. “The 1st FW, like many others, had a busy 2017 with many ‘no fail’ missions from homeland defense, conducting operations against ISIS, and building readiness for the high-end fight. Our Airmen excelled in every aspect of their mission and being recognized by the Air Force Historical Foundation with the Doolittle Award let’s our Airmen know that their hard work is recognized and appreciated.”

According to Hinds, this achievement was possible due to the preparation Airmen put in every day, serving

in the1st FW. The Airmen know they could be called to deploy at a moment’s notice to conduct combat operations anywhere in the world just as they were in the summer of 2017.

Knowing they need to be ready now, they can’t wait for the call to action and then prepare to fight.

“The mission of the 1st Fighter Wing is to provide combatant commanders with F-22 Raptor airpower anywhere in the globe on short notice,” Hinds said. “That means ready and resilient Airmen and families, ready equipment, and ready F-22 Raptors. The 1st FW is ready thanks to the hard work of our Airmen and the support from their families.”

This award in conjunction with the centennial celebration of 1st FW’s air power exemplifies the contributions its Airmen of the 1st FW have made to aviation history and the Air Force.

“If the past has anything to tell us about the future, our Airmen should know the nation will once again call on the 1st FW to provide airpower and win decisively,” Hinds said. “We have from now until that call to improve our readiness. Don’t wait, lean into our readiness, and be prepared to be first to the fight.”

7TH TRANSPORTATION BRIGADE (EXPEDITIONARY) PUBLIC AFFAIRS JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, VA.

Senior leaders, family, and friends gathered to send off their loved ones and fellow U.S. Army Soldiers from 97th Transportation Company, 10th Trans.

Battalion, 7th Trans. Brigade (Expeditionary), during a deployment ceremony at McClellan Fitness Center at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, Nov. 20, 2018.

The crews are scheduled to deploy in support of Operation Spartan Shield.

Soldiers prepared for this deployment by sailing thousands of miles, firing multiple weapon systems, and other training required for this mission.

“The work that these Soldiers have put

in preparing for this mission has lead us to today,” said Capt. Francisco Gonzalez, 97th Trans. Co. commander. “Looking at you all, I know you are ready to complete any mission handed to you.”

The operation is designed to build partner capacity to promote regional self-reliance and increase security within the U.S. Central Command area of operation.

“I am ready and excited to take my crew out for the deployment,” said Staff Sgt. Jerry Lovin, 97th Trans. Co. vessel mate. “I know we will make the Brigade proud.”

Gonzalez concluded the ceremony by thanking the family and friends of the deploying Soldiers for all of their support and trusting the unit with their loved ones.

LOCAL FAMILIES HOST TROOPS FOR

The annual Adopt-a-Service Member Program, sponsored by the United Service Organization and the 733rd Mission Support Group, returned to Fort Eustis, Virginia, for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The program aims to improve service member morale and enhance community relations.

“It’s important these young service members know they are thought about and these families that reach out are caring,” said Danis Lensch, USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia center director.

Approximately 120 U.S. Army Soldiers and U.S. Air Force Airmen have dinner with local families who welcome the members into their homes.

Each member is able to not only share in the holiday festivities in a familyoriented setting, but they also get a chance to represent their units to the community.

Participating units included the 128th Aviation Brigade, Echo Company, 266th Quartermaster’s Battalion and the 362nd Training Squadron Detachment-1.

Taking aim at non-lethal tactics

Members of the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program conducted a demonstration of various munitions at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, Nov. 8, 2018.

A team of instructors from the U.S. Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, JNLWP management office travelled to Fort Eustis to show senior officers the available non-lethal weapons options as part of a Joint Forces Staff College course.

“This demo gives (students) a handson experience that they wouldn’t otherwise get from the presentations in a classroom,” said U.S. Navy 1st Lt. Shannon Davis, JNLWP surface warfare officer.

“We educate senior officers who are taking Joint Professional Military Education classes on what is available so that they are then able to take this knowledge back to their current and future commands.”

The instructors, made up of officers, enlisted and civilian personnel, travel to war colleges and combatant commands to display the most current weapons systems, train units on proper safety procedures, inventory unit capabilities, perform quality checks and work to get units more advanced options.

While getting hands-on experience with the weapons may be a perk of taking the class, the instructors also make sure to emphasize the effects of nonlethal weapons and provide an understanding of escalation-of-force.

“The safety aspects of these munitions are key,” Davis said. “It’s important to understand the minimum target range because these rounds, even though they’re called non-lethal with reversible effects, are capable of doing some very serious damage or kill someone if used improperly.”

ons can play a vital role for members working in the field. Often times, members must enter high-tension situations and make assessments without yet knowing details. The alternate weapons options can provide an extra step in the escalation-of-force process and can help

de-escalate encounters in order to determine intent or if lethal force is appropriate.

“I think escalation-of-force weapons are important because there are times when lethal force may not be justified,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Benjamin Moran,

U.S. Embassy Security Cooperation Office operations officer. “This can be especially true for security forces personnel.

Having an option that will effectively subdue someone without lethal force is exactly what we need.”

The overarching class theme is that non-lethal weapons are complimentary to lethal weapons. Lethal overwatch is ever-present when non-lethal weapons are implemented in real-world scenarios, but the JNLWP team works to educate members and ensure they return home safely after every shift.

“I wish more people knew about this class,” said Davis. “Demonstrations like these are essential because this will keep these options in the back of participants’ minds. They will definitely remember how it felt when they threw a flash grenade.”

The 149th SOC ensures vehicles are mission ready

Bn., 7th Trans. Bde. (Ex) Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment battalion maintenance NCO in charge, the 149th SOC is one of two units Army-wide that are tasked with maintaining both land vehicles and watercraft. This

unique tasking for Soldiers provides a different perspective on Army maintenance that few have the opportunity to experience.

“We assist the [10th Trans. Bn.] in their primary goal of transporting goods and humanitarian aid,” said Wade. “We maintain and upkeep the vehicles and vessels assigned to us, so we can fight and win wars.”

Along with accomplishing everyday maintenance of the wheeled vehicles, the 149th SOC also performs preventive maintenance and repairs to generators, heaters, air conditioning units, weapons, night vision goggles and communication equipment.

“The mechanics here have an advantage over other units because we have mechanics that are E-4’s and below that are running the maintenance for their company,” said Wade.

“They get to learn maintenance management which is usually an E-5 and up skill level. Being the only mechanic in that unit, they are more well-rounded opposed to other E-4’s in bigger units that have E-6’s and E-7’s who run the maintenance program.”

“The fact that we are multifaceted in having the trucks and vessels makes us a unique unit,” said Wade. “Other than that, we are a transportation unit who can deploy ourselves by rail and sea. Because we have [our own] vessels, we do not have to rely on the Navy to move our vehicles by sea, we

can do it ourselves.”

According to Wade, when the 149th SOC deploys they will load and transport vehicles assigned to the unit. Once they arrive in their deployed location, they will be assigned location-specific equipment they are responsible for.

The 149th SOC performs seaport terminal service operations to discharge and load containerized and non-containerized cargo and wheeled and tracked vehicles in fixed seaports or at logistics-over the shore sites. The unit also coordinates seaport clearance and onward movement while supporting movement control and motor transportation units.

The Soldiers assigned to the 149th SOC work day-in and day-out to ensure their wheeled vehicles and watercraft are properly maintained and in working order to provide support for installation task and when the time comes, downrange in a deployed location.

them into their home to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.

The Stalnik family does their best to make anyone feel at home. With a house full of adopted children, five dogs and seven cats, it’s a wonder how they have been able to open up their home to service members for the past 12 years.

Andrea Stalnik heard about the program 12 years ago from a co-worker and was instantly interested. She told her husband about it, and being a retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt., he agreed it was a great idea.

“When I was active duty, I didn’t spend that many Thanksgivings at home so I know what it’s like to be away from everything,” said Thomas “Spike” Stalnik. “I get an opportunity to share my experiences with them.”

The Stalniks not only host Soldiers in their home, but they hope to become lifelong friends.

They give their number to each Soldier in case they need rides anywhere, need to get off base for a while or just want to hang

“No Soldier should have to spend Thanksgiving alone,” said Andrea. “We keep them as part of our family.”

Pvt. Drake Koch, 128th Aviation Brigade Advanced Individual Training student, was one of the Soldiers the Stalnik’s hosted.

Koch said he was nervous because he wasn’t sure what to expect out of the family. He was excited as this was his first time being out of uniform in eight months.

“If I could do it again, I would,” Koch said. “I’m really glad we got to play soccer and play with the Frisbee, but watching the football game (was) the best part.”

All the Soldiers agreed that it felt like home.

“Being away from the Company is a huge de-stressor and the food was really good,” Koch said. “This is something I would love to do one day.”

The Stalniks plan to continue this tradition for other Soldiers for years to come.

Pharmacist Cough and Cold Clinic

The Langley Hospital will provide a Pharmacist Cough and Cold Clinic starting Feb. 12, 2018. Patients who cannot get an appointment with their provider right away and do not want to wait at the ER can check in at the Family Health front desk to be seen by a clinical pharmacist on a walk-in basis, Monday through Friday from 8 to 10 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Service is available to all active duty and Department of Defense beneficiaries 18 to 70 years of age who are enrolled to Langley Hospital. Patients who are on flying status or Personal Reliability Program, are immunocompromised or have symptoms over 10 days cannot be seen at the Cough and Cold clinic. For more information, contact Tech. Pharmacy hours expanded

Effective immediately, the hours of operation for the Langley Hospital and Satellite Pharmacies will expand to better serve patients. The Hospital Outpatient Pharmacy will now open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Satellite Pharmacy located at the Air Force Base Exchange will now be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Satellite Pharmacy Kiosk located inside the commissary will continue to be open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA gate) changes

Security Forces personnel will no longer man the Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA Gate). Personnel will still have their credentials checked by guards at the main NASA gate, however, their credentials will not be checked again at the Durand Entry Control Facility. NASA guards will still man their side of the Durand Entry Control Facility and will only allow CAC holders (no dependent ID cards) to enter NASA property. Additionally, no commercial vehicles are allowed access to NASA property. The Durand Entry Control Facility hours are from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Manpower shortage impacts 633rd Medical Group services

The 633rd Medical Group strives to provide Trusted Care to all they serve, while supporting many deployed and home-station missions. Due to contract vacancies and multiple provider deployments/permanent changes of station during the coming months, it will take longer to receive appointments and have messages returned. In light of these staffing concerns, TRICARE will temporarily enroll only Active Duty service members and their family members. This action is being taken to ensure patients receive the care they deserve within the established standards. There will be no enrollment changes or action taken to any patients who are already enrolled at the 633rd Medical Group, regardless of category. The Air Force Reserve will host Palace Front-Palace Chase informational sessions the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month at 10 a.m., in the 633rd Force Support Squadron auditorium, building 15 in Wing B, room 203. Palace Front is available to Airmen within 180 days of their projected separation date.

Palace Chase is reserved for Airmen over 180 days from separation who are interested in separating from Active Duty early.

Fort Eustis’ Groninger Library has implemented an ongoing Reading Program entitled “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” and “1000 Books from 1st -5th grades.” For every 100 books read, children can take their reading log to the library to receive a prize.
