26th MEU reflects on 2012 operations CPL. MICHAEL LOCKETT 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit

It’s been a long and busy year for the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

From New Orleans to New York, from the exuberant displays of fleet weeks to rapid efficiency while conducting disaster relief operations in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the MEU has been demonstrating the strength and flexibility of its nature in ways few could anticipate.

And they’re only getting warmed up. The unit is still in its pre-deployment training cycle, preparing for its 2013 deployment at sea.

Slated to sail east and participate in theater cooperation exercises, as well as support operations in Southwest Asia and respond to developing crises in its area of operations with the speed and flexibility a sea-based unit can provide, the MEU is one of the most effective and visible extensions of American foreign policy.

The MEU started 2012 without its three reinforcement commands and personnel. Comprised of less than 200 Marines and sailors, the unit was in the initial planning stages of pre-deployment, locking on when, where and who would be involved in the major training evolutions later in the year.

In April, the MEU packed its bags and went to sea. They brought along Company C, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, which was reinforced with extra personnel and equipment assets for public display. Embarked aboard the USS Wasp, they traveled to New Orleans and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., allowing the general public to come aboard while they were in port to see some of the equipment a MEU uses. The Marines and

sailors also reached out to the locals through community service and attending a number of events held in honor of the special week.

In New Orleans, Marines also took part in the celebrations of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 alongside naval service members from the Navy and Coast Guard, and from ships of the United Kingdom, France, Canada and many other countries.

After returning home, the unit began training for its upcoming deployment in earnest. Composting Sept.

7, 2012, the 26th MEU began its pre-deployment training program with a couple weeks of exercises at Fort Pickett, Va. Combining the strength of Battalion Landing Team 3/2 with the adaptability of Combat Logistics Battalion 26 and Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 266 Reinforced, the MEU started taking the shape it would assume for the nearly year– long deployment.

After returning home from Fort Pickett, the Marines and sailors of the BLT practiced their respective raids. Marines from Companies I, K and L will specialize in helicopter borne, mechanized, and motorized raids respectively – each company practicing a particular form of assault to increase their proficiency. Concurrently, the entirety of the MEU continued to focus on interoperability of the different elements, so they can perform as one during realworld operations.

In early November, they were presented their first opportunity to act as a team for disaster relief operations. Normally trained to help people abroad, this was a unique chance to help fellow Americans at home. Hurricane Sandy swept through the northeastern seaboard, smashing New York City and

Military units from all over were called in to respond.

The 26th MEU responded quickly and visibly. Called up and flown north inside 24 hours, the MEU embarked aboard the USS Wasp once more to bring aid to those in need. Flying operations every day, using the assets and manpower of the BLT, VMM and CLB, the MEU staunched the bleeding, providing assistance to the worst hit areas in Queens and Staten Island. The MEU leveraged its air assets to put boots on the ground in areas where other relief organizations simply could not go, pinned as it was by damaged roads and minimal information.

The MEU provided disaster relief support for nearly two weeks before being released back to training. The Marines and sailors returned home and got back to work preparing for their long mission.

Within a few weeks, Marines and sailors of the unit embarked aboard the USS Bataan, USS San Antonio, and USS Carter Hall. Participating in a group sail exercise, Marines familiarized

themselves with shipboard living and operations. The unit practiced operations across the spectrum, from mass casualty scenarios to ship-to-shore landings and maritime interdiction operations. With their training complete, the 26th MEU returned home in the late half of December.

Many members of the team traveled home for the holidays to spend time with friends and family before their training is complete and the unit deploys. When they return, they will board the ships of the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group to continue training. Following their final training exercises, they will steam east to the Mediterranean, and from there, to points unknown.

The 26th MEU operates continuously across the globe, providing the president and unified combatant commanders with a forward-deployed, seabased quick reaction force.

The MEU is a Marine AirGround Task Force capable of conducting amphibious operations, crisis response, and limited contingency operations.

Service members from all over the United States teamed up with the Moroccan Armed Forces to kick off Exercise African Lion 2012, in Agadir, Morocco, April 7 to 18.

Approximately 1,200 U.S. military personnel have arrived in various regions of the Kingdom of Morocco to take part in the annual exercise, designed to improve interoperability and mutual understanding of each nation’s military tactics, techniques and procedures.

AL-12 is a U.S. African Command-sponsored, Marine Forces Africa-led exercise that involves various types of training including command post, live-fire and maneuvering, peace keeping operations, an intelligence capacity building seminar, aerial refueling and low-level flight training, as well as medical and dental assistance projects.

Leading Joint Task Force African Lion 12 is Col. Roger Garay, 14th Marine Regiment commanding officer, out of Fort Worth, Texas.

“This is the first time a MEU and a reserve regiment have teamed together in this capacity, and it has proven to be an adrenaline shot, as it brings aviation and amphibious capabilities to the table that our Moroccan partners are very interested in,” said Garay.

In preparation for AL-12, JTF Marines from 4th Marine Logisitics Group, 4th Marine Division, conducted a massive maritime offload at the Port of Agadir, April 5.

“We unloaded 169 pieces of rolling stock assets from the MPF [Maritime Pre-positioning Force] in under 12 hours,” said Gunnery Sgt. Fermin Rodriguez, logisitics chief, JTF AL-12.

“Everything from M-777 Howitzers and logistical items to M1A1 Abrams tanks. All totaled it was more than two million pounds of gear.”

CWO-3 James Clark, Assistant Strategy Mobility officer, MFA, said the offload was historic for the Marines of the JTF. “It is very rare the reserve component is afforded the opportunity to integrate and lead staffs from throughout the United States, in order to utilize the dynamic capability of the Mari-

time Pre-positioning Force.”

This mission-essential gear will be shipped to several different locations throughout Morocco to include Kenitra, Tifnit, and the deserts of Cap Draa and Tan-Tan. “African Lion has grown so much.

It is so well organized. Marines and Moraccans are always ready to train together in such austere environments,” said Al Myers, Force Protection liaison officer at the U.S. Embassy in Rabat, Morocco.

“This year’s African Lion is a potential precedence-setting enlargement of the exercise that will further deepen the ties between our two countries,” Garay added. “On the heels of nine months of joint and bi-lateral planning, the JTF is ready and excited to go above and beyond AFRICOM’s goals for this enduring U.S. and Moroccan relationship.”

With the Marines, Army, Navy and Air Force all present and accounted for, U.S. service members will partner with more than 900 Moroccan Armed Forces counterparts in the coming weeks, to ensure the roar of African Lion 12 is heard by the world.

Child’s walk unique welcome home for Marine father CPL. PAUL PETERSON

A child’s first steps are a cherished milestone for many parents, a hallmark moment and stepping stone to greater things.

For Staff Sgt. Jeremy Cooney, who returned from Afghanistan in December, there was the possibility his son would never take those first steps. But unbeknownst to Cooney, his six-year-old son Michael, whose cerebral palsy had doctors predicting he would never walk, defied expectations. When Cooney returned to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune at the end of his deployment, Michael strode into the surprised embrace of his father’s arms, and he continues to make strides today.

The feat was a surprise to more than Michael’s father. The first inkling Cooney’s son could walk came after Michael stood up on his own one day.

Now, with the school year at Tarawa Terrace Elementary School coming to a close, Michael’s progress continues to show marked improvement. In fact, where once doctors predicted Michael would never walk, the aid of his teachers, therapists, family and his own determination allowed him to not only walk, but to join his classmates as they celebrated another successful year at Tarawa Terrace Elementary School with games, races and fun-filled water events.

What is more, his progress allowed him to continue on with his classes.

“It gives him something to set his own personal goals,” said Leigh Anne Kapiko, the principle at Michael’s elementary school. “The environment he’s in is a regular firstgrade classroom, and he has support in there to help him access the curriculum, being able to see it, hear it and experience it just like all the other kids. It gives him a sense he can do it and makes him want to try harder to do it.”

As Cooney was serving in Afghanistan, Michael was surprising his mother and teachers with his new found mobility. Over the following months, his teachers, family and therapists continued to work with Michael and develop his motor skills. His father was none the wiser.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” said Katherine Guiney-Olsen, a special education teacher who worked extensively with Michael, “but more importantly, you don’t do it alone. You have a team. So much relies on the regular education teacher: How you work together, how you make it consistent, how you lay it out.” Guiney-Olsen also said, “It’s an incredible

feeling because we don’t get to see it every day nor do we get everyone on the same page, when everybody rises to the occasion where you say, ‘Ok, let’s try this today.”

Michael’s condition not only limited his physical mobility, it greatly affected his ability to participate in class work, communicate and participate with his peers. The doctors’ original diagnose suggested not only would Michael not walk but speech and many other abilities would also be out of reach.

However, once Michael’s mobility improved, new doors began to open to him, and his zeal to participate increased, said Kapiko. The school’s staff continued to push Michael’s development, experimenting with new technologies and techniques as his abilities progressed.

“We see him change almost daily,” said GuineyOlsen. “He (grew) to what you see today, which is a fully included first-grade boy who’s on the regular curriculum as any other child and treated like any other child.

I don’t know how you put it in perspective. It’s pretty phenomenal.”

The school’s staff and Michael’s teachers worked from the beginning to develop plans to help his progress and accommodate his needs in the school. Government supported policies directed at helping students with special needs, the efforts of Michaels family, surgeries and the daily efforts of the staff at TTES continued to support Michael’s efforts in school. This included the use of special speech, reading, mobility and selfsufficiency devices, which were used to help Michael give voice to his thoughts and grasp for the freedom of movement he could see in his peers.

“That’s what education is about,” said Kapiko.

“Every day we work on unlocking the world for kids, making it accessible for all kids. Just because his differences seemed to be more profound, the same principle applied. You do all you can to help kids access everything they can every day.”

Still, none could have predicted his rate of development, which his instructors could see changing weekly. By the end of the 2012 school year, Michael’s abilities to interact with his fellow students and participate in school progressed to running and playing alongside his peers, even racing tricycles during the school’s field-day activities.

Each day he returns home, said Kapiko, his parents say he is physically exhausted, tired out by another day of pushing and striving with his increasing physical freedoms.

II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) officially deactivated during a ceremony, April 18, at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C. The unit deployed from March 2011 to March 2012 under the command of Maj. Gen. John A. Toolan, and served as the head-

quarters element of NATO’s Regional Command Southwest, comprised of approximately 30,000 coalition troops, responsible for an area of more than 40,000 square miles encompassing Helmand and Nimruz provinces.

During II MEF (Fwd.)’s deployment, several districts, including the Helmand provincial capital at Lashkar Gah transitioned to Afghan control. Other districts, including the

former Taliban stronghold at Marjah, are scheduled to transition later this year as the coalition continues to shift its mission in the region from counter-insurgency to advisory.

Gen. James F. Amos, the commandant of the Marine Corps, Lt. Gen. John M. Paxton, Jr., the commanding general of II Marine Expeditionary Force, joined Toolan and his staff for the ceremony.

24th Marine Expeditionary Unit

The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit returned to the U.S. after completing nearly nine months deployed as an expeditionary crisis response force with the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group.

Approximately 2,300 Marines and sailors of the 24th MEU will be offloading over the next few days from amphibious assault ships USS Iwo Jima, USS New York and USS Gunston Hall, using Navy hovercrafts at Onslow Beach, by flying in with their own aircraft and by using the Morehead City Port facility.

The 24th MEU left in March to serve throughout the U.S. European, Central and Africa Commands where they participated in a number of exercises, theater security cooperation engagements, and remained on alert for a total of approximately

150 days to respond to a number of crises.

“Our Marines and sailors did a fantastic job demonstrating what it means to be a forwarddeployed, expeditionary force ready to answer the Nation’s call,” said Col. Frank Donovan, commanding officer, 24th MEU. Their presence throughout the various operating areas provided decision space for combatant commanders and senior leaders knowing the 24th MEU’s Marine Air Ground Task Force was postured and trained to respond to a variety of missions, said Donovan.

The unit was due home in November but was delayed while serving in the 6th Fleet area of responsibility and remained in an alert status in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Delays and changes in deployment timelines are common for MEUs, with the past two East Coast MEUs also participating

in extended deployments.

Even after being extended just as they were supposed to be heading home in November, the Marines and Sailors remained focused and ready, explained Donovan.

“Our young Marines and sailors were true professionals throughout the entire deployment. After notification of our extension they buckled down and pushed forward. They are truly incredible and I couldn’t ask for anything more,” said Donovan.

Even though they missed Thanksgiving the 24th MEU is returning just in time for the rest of the holiday season, which many of their families are thankful for.

“Our families and friends are absolutely amazing. Their support and dedication on the home front allows us to stay focused on the mission. I cannot thank them enough,” said Donovan.

T

he 1983 terrorist attacks on the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, killed 241 American service members and sent shockwaves through the Marine community.

The official national monument that honors those fallen service members stands only minutes from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune front gate and tells the world a short, humble message: “They came in peace.”

Approximately 30 Marines from Combat Logistics Battalion 6, 2nd Marine Logistics Group visited the Beirut Memorial Oct. 11 to ensure – even 29 years later – the legacy of the attacks and the mission in Lebanon remains strong in the minds of today’s generation.

“It was a traumatic time for the Marine Corps,” said Richard L. Ray, a retired gunnery sergeant who served aboard Camp Lejeune at the time of the bombings. “Whether it is one, two or 241, it is

like you got a body blow to the stomach when you hear something like that.”

Ray worked at the public affairs office on the base the day the attacks occurred.

As soon as he learned about the scope of the event, he immediately put on his uniform and reported to his post, where his days blended into his nights as he worked “day on, stay on.”

He joined the Marines on the ground in Lebanon shortly thereafter.

“It had been 14 years since I felt a round go down range,” said Ray, a combat veteran who served three tours in Vietnam.

“I can honestly tell you those 14 years mentally never existed by the time I got to Beirut. Everything I learned popped right back into my head.”

Ray even escorted media through some of the areas known to be threatened by enemy snipers. His role landed him on the front page of a magazine, which questioned the involvement of the U.S. military in Lebanon.

and civilian communities interacted.

“We got hundreds and hundreds of packages and letters every day to take out on the line,” said Ray, who said he passed out the overwhelming numbers of correspondence to his fellow Marines. “In Beirut we saw it, and it registered the American public’s opinion of service members was taking a turn for the better. It’s been that way ever since.”

The overwhelming support from people in the states struck Ray especially hard. He said it was the first time in 14 years he truly felt the American public’s presence with the troops in combat.

The Beirut bombing meant just as much to the Marines still at Camp Lejeune, where Ray saw large numbers of recently retired service members return to active duty as the base responded to the crisis.

Ray was especially touched to learn the community launched a campaign to build a monument for those killed in the bombing.

“Awareness is key,” said 1st Sgt. Laureano Perez, the first sergeant of Headquarters Company, CLB-6, who organized the trip to the Beirut Memorial. “It’s one of the bloodiest losses of Marines, and it’s something they need to know so they can pass it on to their Marines … it’s something we shouldn’t forget.”

After 23 years in the Marine Corps, Ray felt the same and rededicated his time to ensuring the memory of Lebanon is passed on to each generation of Marines.

“You understand too,” said Ray as he asked the Marines of CLB-6 about their own experiences in Afghanistan. “I was always one of those who wanted to sit at the front of the bus to see what was going on.”

He thanked them for doing the same.

Corpsman receives Silver Star for heroism in Afghanistan CPL. WALTER MARINO III 2nd Marine Division

Petty Officer 3rd Class Todd Angell received one of the nation’s highest military awards for valor, the Silver Star, for his heroism in Afghanistan as a corpsman with Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division.

Corporal Brandon Rumbaugh, a close friend of Angell’s and a Marine whose life he helped save in Afghanistan, pinned the medal on the Bethel, Conn., native during a ceremony April 27.

Rumbaugh, a Uniontown, Pa., native, became a double amputee after stepping on an improvised explosive device. Angell was one of the service members who rushed to his aid and started him on intravenous fluids and medication.

“One of the hardest (casualties) I worked on was Rumbaugh; he was one of the most unstable casualties I had. He was actually less stable than a kid I treated with a gunshot wound to the head,” said Angell.

“I did everything I could, but I didn’t know if it was enough. Having him pin me meant the world to me. Just to have Rumbaugh alive to pin me, that’s more than any Silver Star or any medal.”

Rumbaugh wasn’t the only one Angell saved during his tour in Afghanistan.

Angell risked his life on many occasions to save others because he said, “If that means being hurt on the way, so be it.”

During one incident Oct. 12, 2010, Angell took a Marine fire team and unknowingly ran more than 500 meters through an IED hotspot to provide immediate care for Marines injured

by IEDs, rather than wait for vehicles to navigate the difficult terrain in the area.

“I just grabbed my gear and just ran. It was a long run, probably the longest run of my life. I was pretty broke off by the time I got up there,” said Angell.

Another incident Nov. 8, 2010, involved the treatment of an Afghan National Army soldier who stepped on an IED. Angell

followed a Marine handling a minesweeper to get to the wounded soldier when the Marine struck an IED. Angell assessed the Marine’s injury before moving toward the soldier, where he applied tourniquets to both amputated legs, administered intravenous fluids and stabilized the soldier. As he was treating the soldier, an explosive ordnance disposal Marine working onsite also struck an IED, receiving minor blast injuries. After treating the three injured men and ensuring the safe evacuation of the soldier, a firefight broke out, resulting in a local resident being shot in the head. Angell treated the civilian promptly and saved his life.

Angell wasn’t done yet.

On Dec. 20, 2010, it was his combat skills that shined.

During a firefight, Angell killed two insurgents at distances up to 400 meters. As the firefight continued, Angell also acted as the assistant mortar gunner. By the end of the day, he had fired 17 mortar rounds at enemy positions.

“I don’t see Doc Angell as a corpsman,” said Cpl. James D. Freeman, a rifleman and a native of Woodberry, Tenn., who spent the latter half of his deployment in Angell’s platoon. “He’s just another Marine who knows how to fix people better than we can.”

Angell’s platoon leader said he also felt he was one of the best corpsman he’s seen in his 17 years in the Marine Corps.

“Doc Angell is a constant professional; they broke the mold with that guy,” said Staff Sgt. Ysidro R. Gonzalez, Angell’s platoon sergeant during the deployment. “Doc Angell never hesitated under fire, and I believe that his devotion and dedication to his Marines is what drove him in the eyes of the enemy to perform the way he did.

He never once thought of himself; he always thought of his Marines, no matter what was on their collar, and for the Afghans as well.

I just can’t say enough good things about that kid.”

The ceremony brought out many different emotions from fellow service

members in attendance, but the most commonplace was pride.

“It made me feel very proud of that kid. I’m very proud of him and proud to know him and (to) have been a small paragraph in Doc Angell’s life,” said Gonzales, a San Diego native. “The only other way I can describe it is like a father watching his son graduate (recruit training) or something. Doc Angell is a great American; he saved a lot of lives. Everybody always talks bad about the kids of this generation, your youth and all that, and how they don’t measure up to everything else, but whoever says those things have never seen a young man like Doc Angell in combat.”

Marines in Angell’s squad describe him as confident in his medical abilities, a people person, and, most importantly, someone who made them feel safe on patrol.

“I’d say Doc Angell was there for me every time we stepped outside the wire.

He loved to take care of his Marines,” said Lance Cpl. Timothy J. Hagem, a mortarman in Angell’s platoon during the deployment. “When he came up and helped Rumbaugh out, I was there for that. I’d say it was a combination of his duty and love of his Marines. Yes, he knew he had to do his job as a corpsman, but he had the drive of like, ‘I’m not just doing this as a corpsman, I’m doing this because these guys are my friends. Yeah, I want come home, but I want to see these guys come home just as much.’ If you love that person who’s hurt, you’re going to get there no matter what, and Doc Angell and Rumbaugh are real close.”

Angell acted with complete disregard for his own personal safety, and his actions are a testament to his devotion to the Marines he served, but he humbly attributes his successes to those around him.

“This is not an individual award,” said Angell. “Even though it was awarded to me, this is for all of my Marines; because they did their jobs, I was able to do mine.”

Approximately 86 Marines from 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group arrived in New York recently with high-powered pumps, engineering equipment and various other military-grade resources to assist locals who lost their homes due to Hurricane Sandy.

The vicious storm ripped through much of the coast, including parts of Queens and much of Far Rockaway. Many of the areas’ low-income housing was either blown away, burned or flooded beyond repair, leaving people who live there without electricity, food or even a roof over their heads in some cases.

The Marines were sent to support United States Northern Command with Defense Support of Civil Authorities missions related to the hurricane, in order to salvage any homes.

After arriving late Nov. 3 the team hit the ground running early the next day, sending out their first group of combat engineers and water support technicians to pump water out of a block of apartment complexes in Far Rockaway.

Many of the buildings’ basements were flooded and required water removal immediately. Marines answered the call by setting up powerful, gas-powered pumps to extract the water from the buildings and into the

drainage systems in the streets.

Residents of the apartments received the Marines’ efforts with optimism. Some watched as the engineers worked, some took pictures, and other residents offered coffee and food to the Marines.

The Marines assigned to the humanitarian operation found out about the assignment just days before they left, but they were more than happy to volunteer and support the cause.

“Basically, our command told us they needed a certain number of Marines in a couple (Military Occupational Specialties) to go to New York, and I wanted to be a part of the efforts in helping the people here,” said Sgt. Justin Armstrong, a combat engineer with 8th ESB, 2nd MLG. “Even though we had less than two days to prepare, all of us wanted to come and do what we could to aid the residents who lost so much in the storm.”

The feeling resonated throughout the group of Marines.

“I’m just happy I got the opportunity to do something that will benefit these people in need,” said Sgt. Ryan Ewing, a water support technician with 8th ESB, 2nd MLG. The Marines pumped an enormous amount of floodwater from the apartments after their first day of work, but the job is only beginning. The Marines are looking forward to the challenge and excited to see what other jobs await them.

Lejeune High School wins Onslow County Classic JESSIE HEATH Sports editor

eam work can make or break a game.

It can lead to a sweeping victory or a crushing loss.

The Lejeune High School Devil Pup basketball team made history as they became the winners of the Onslow County Classic basketball tournament Dec. 29, 2011.

After two days of battling other Onslow County schools on the court, the Devil Pups faced off against Northside High School in the Onslow Classic final game at Lejeune High School aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

A large golden trophy sat in the corner of the LHS gym, reminding both teams of what was at stake.

The Devil Pups faced a rough start in the first period as Northside plowed past them to score 18 points in the first eight minutes of the game. Lejeune wouldn’t be swayed though, and came back strong, scoring 16 points in the second period.

Nick Cruz and Anton Crutcher fought to regain control of the ball with less than four minutes remaining in the first half of the game, and it was Cruz who sank the shot that gave the Devil Pups control of

the game.

“We have a strong defense,” said head basketball coach Doug Erny. “I always tell our guys that a solid defense can win games just as well as a good offense.”

Their solid defense gave the Devil Pups the edge.

“We always tell them to play as a team. Leave everything out there,” said assistant coach Chad Fonville. “Defense starts everything. There is a big difference between defense and offense. As long as they leave everything they have on the court, they do well.

“We’ve got two main scorers, but we always remind our guys that (Wilson and Allen) are not the only two athletes on this team.

We have an entire team of guys who can be a threat on the court,” added Fonville.

“When they work together they can win games.”

In the fourth period, the Devil Pups put on a show for the fans who packed the bleachers. Keeping control of the ball, they sank more than five shots in a row.

With each shot, Lejeune High School fans grew louder and louder until the gym was full of nothing but screaming fans. With the score 55-43 and less than two minutes on the clock, Erny called a time-out to give his team a pep talk.

“I’ve seen you be a team,” said Erny after

The LHS team made history by hosting and winning the tournament in the same year.

Northside scored several points in a row, leaving Lejeune unnerved. “I’ve seen you be a team. Now you need to get it together, act like a team and play ball.”

They returned to the court with a strategy aimed at keeping their stronghold over Northside. As they passed the ball, trying to waste time until the final buzzer sounded, the LHS gym stood to its feet.

In the six years the Onslow County Classic has been in existence, the host team has never won the championship title. This, along with the knowledge that their win put Erny

one step closer to his 400th career win, sent the Devil Pups running onto the court as soon as the game ended with a final score of 57-43.

“We know Northside is fast and very athletic,” said Erny. “When it comes to winning this game, we know that they have their strengths and we have to work around them. We play with defensive intensity and use our advantages without forcing anything that doesn’t feel natural.”

Olympic Watchdog 2012

Inspiration springs from bold actions Even casual observers can easily see which athletes are full of grace and which athletes are in need of a little grace.

It’s no secret I love the Olympics.

I don’t know if it’s the ability to live vicariously through athletes like Kerri Walsh or McKayla Maroney, watching them accomplish things I don’t have a drive to do, the thrill of the sheer number of athletic events crammed into a 17-day period, the fact they highlight peaceful, international cooperation, or something else all together. It’s probably a combination of all those things, plus many more.

The Olympics bring out the true colors of athletes and fans. After the games end, there are always two groups of people who stand out in the minds of those of us who follow the games and medal ceremonies: Those who inspired us with their participation, and those who were we embarrassed by when we read their Tweets and heard how they behaved while representing their country.

Even casual observers can easily see which athletes are full of grace and which athletes are in need of a little grace. It is the latter group that sticks in the minds of most people, but the first group who inspire us and earn our appreciation.

Oscar Pistorious, the double amputee sprinter from South Africa, is making waves around the world with his story of hard work and dedication since the Olympic committee agreed to let him participate in the London 2012 games. Pistorious was a pioneer in the inclusion of amputees in the track and field portion of the Olympic Games, and his selection to Team South Africa sent people all over the world flocking to the internet to find out more about him.

Pistorious never let what some would consider a “disability” handicap him. Repeatedly, he told reporters, supporters and critics the same thing: “You are not disabled by the disabilities you have. You are able by the abilities you have.”

Instead of simply encouraging other similarly afflicted people, Pistorious was active in showing his support. A recent photo surfaced online of him beside a young girl, both of them racing with their artificial legs.

To other amputees, Pistorious’ willingness to not accept the odds or let them define him, is irreplaceable.

The impact he’s had on those who

never experienced the loss of a limb, his commitment and love for his sport has done plenty to inspire.

While Pistorious did not make it to the semifinals of his 400 meter dash, the athletes he raced were so moved by him they held him in high esteem at the end of their race. Race winner Kirani Jones even held up Pistorious’ bib for the crowd in London as they cheered.

Of course, Pistorious is not the only story of inspiration and grace at the Summer games. American gymnasts Gabby Douglas and McKayla Maroney have captured the hearts of fans everywhere with their Americansweetheart statuses.

Gabby Douglas became a worldwide sensation when she won the all-around gold last week for her gymnastics performances, beating out her teammate and all-around favorite for the gold, Maroney. Douglas was a gracious and humble winner, and in an example of a true class act, Maroney was cheering for her teammate harder than almost anybody else in the crowd as Douglas accepted the immense honor.

When Maroney misstepped on her last vault, losing her chances at a gold medal, her class shined brightly again.

Disappointment was clear on her face as she accepted the silver medal, but she stood through interviews and relived her unfortunate mistake, never leaving reporters for the safe haven of her team and family.

Maroney’s willingness to repeatedly talk through her last vault, during which she missed her landing and landed on her bottom, reminded those around her they must face adversity with the same willingness that fuels their excitement when they win.

It would have been all too easy to retreat into the arms of her teammates and refuse to talk to reporters after her disappointing silver, but Maroney accepted her defeat graciously and discussed her disappointment openly, reminding everyone that even Olympic athletes are only human.

They make mistakes. Maroney owns up to hers. Just like she demonstrated when Douglas surprised the crowd, Maroney’s attitude toward her competitors was nothing but classy.

There are others. Bulgarian male gymnast, Jordan Jovtchev will turn

40 next February. His attendance and participation in the 30th Olympic games marked his sixth Olympics.

As a veteran in the Olympic games, Jovtchev earned the right to be looked at as a mentor for younger athletes with hopes of staying fit and at the top of their game long enough to compete with him.

Polish table tennis player Natalia Partyka was born without her right hand and forearm, but she stepped alongside Pistorious to compete in both the Olympics and the Paralympic games this year, proving she shines in the face of adversity, regardless of what most people would consider a hindrance to her abilities.

Granted, there are athletes we probably shouldn’t try to emulate. The bad girls and bad boys of the Olympic village are certainly present and attract media attention, but not in a manner conducive to helping their careers.

The badminton players disqualified for trying to lose, sprinters who go missing before their events, and soccer stars who shed negative light on their sport and teammates certainly show a different side of the Olympics, but I choose to dwell on the positive.

As we enjoy the second half of the 30th Olympic games, we are met with a challenge. Athletes are not the only one’s who can inspire others to act.

The choices we make on a daily basis drive others to action.

As service members, Marines are often placed in high-stress environments and expected to carry out their mission to completion. The best leaders don’t send the lowest on the food chain to the front lines while they sit back and watch. Good leaders don’t let their words contradict their actions.

Just like Olympic athletes, Marines and other service members can be thrust into unexpected areas of limelight. When called to set an example, we can either lead with strong actions or sit back and be a drain on progress. Even those who don’t think they were made for leadership can hone and sharpen their skills one action at a time.

Nobody is asking you to have a tragic story of the loss that propelled you to action.

That said, there’s no excuse to sit around any more.

It was a moment 21 years in the making when the All-Marine Boxing Team, based out of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, realized they won the 2012 Armed Forces Boxing Championship.

For 21 years, the Army had held the title in their grip. It fell to the young All-Marine team to seize the championship title

during the finals of the 2012 Armed Forces Boxing Championship at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., Feb. 3.

The final tie breaker depended on Sgt. DeJesus Gardner, who stepped into the ring determined to bring a gold medal home to his daughter, just like he had promised.

Gardner’s gold medal win, alongside the victories of his teammates on the All-Marine Boxing Team,

earned the right to take the championship title away from the Army.

“You are something for this base to be proud of for years to come,” said Col. Daniel J. Lecce, MCB Camp Lejeune commanding officer, as he distributed command coins to each member of the All-Marine Boxing team. “This is a big deal in the boxing world and it’s a huge deal in the Marine Corps. We are exceptionally proud of you.”

To prepare for the Armed Forces Boxing Championship, the team participated in rigorous training aboard MCB Camp Pendleton for three weeks.

“They are young and don’t have as much experience as some of the others, but they can put their minds to anything and bring it hard,” said Ravelo.

David Turner, Deputy Director, HQMC, recognized the team’s exceptional performance.

“This is important,” said Turner as he addressed the team, Tuesday. “You established a legacy and others who come after you will have to hold themselves to a higher standard to keep that legacy in place.”

Turner reminded the AllMarine Boxing team their dedication was something they were expected to hold onto throughout their time with the Marine Corps.

work and tradition,” explained Turner. “You carry our heritage with what you accomplished. The strength of the pack lies within the strength of the wolf. The strength of the wolf is in the strength of his pack.

What you did shows your strength. It is really beyond words.”

In 2007, five kayak enthusiasts started hunting for a way to show their love for their sport and their appreciation for the American service members who lay their lives on the line to ensure the safety of the American people.

The result was a small kayak race for the benefit of the civilian non-profit organization Hope For The Warriors.

Five years later, Kayak For The Warriors grew substantially. It’s paddling for a cause and the participants who take part in it are more than eager to give back to their community.

More than 100 kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders prepared to race each other at Garner Park, in Pine Knoll Shores, N.C., June 9.

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and wounded warriors from Fort Bragg was enough to remind kayakers of the real reason for the race – to show their unconditional support for service members wounded in the line of duty.

Kayak participants didn’t let distance stop them from taking part in the Kayak For The Warriors race. Steve and Marilyn Gabel read about the race in a magazine and decided to give it a shot. With years of kayaking experience under their belt and a heart-felt appreciation for programs like Hope For The Warriors, the Gabels made the trek from the sandhills of N.C. to participate in the race-day events.

“It’s been a while since we’ve been in the water, but we have done some kayaking on the Cape Fear River. This will be a little different, but we’re excited to be out here,” said Marilyn. “We’re excited to be on the water else.” with eeverybody very ve ry ybo body dy y eels l e. ls e.

participants warmed the hearts of the volunteers who freely gave their time and energy to make the Kayak For The Warriors race a success. For Michael Ferneau, a retired Marine who served in Vietnam, the race was about more than just supporting a good cause.

“Put simply, this is patriotism,” Ferneau stated.

Ferneau, who was in charge of the timers for the race, volunteered with Hope For The Warriors and the kayak race for three years. Having served in Vietnam, he has seen two sides of the sword.

He knows what families face as they worry about their deployed service members, and understands the trials awaiting service members during deployment and at home.

“If I can do anything to help these Marines and soldiers, my time has been well spent,” claimed Ferneau. “If I can help for a good cause, why shouldn’t I do it? I can’t think of any reason not to.”

In March, Marines got back to their roots, honing their skills as riflemen during a three-week Competition in Arms Program Intramural Shooting Match.

Marines who excelled in the intramural matches moved on to compete in the Eastern Division Match Championship and were recognized for their performance during an awards ceremony held at the gymnasium at Stone Bay aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune April 6.

Also shooting in the Eastern Division Match was the Marine Corps Shooting Team and the British Royal Marines Shooting Team, competing against each other for the Inter-Corps Cup and Royal Marines Bowl trophies in an annual show of international camaraderie.

Division competitors finishing in the top 10 percent compete in the Marine Corps Championships.

The division matches provided an intensive 17-day training period for the exceptionally motivated Marines specifically selected by their commands while utilizing the same gear they would take to war to further refine their personal marksmanship skills under the demanding conditions of competition.

gt. Jamel Herring doesn’t think he is a superstar. He did not play the leading role in a blockbuster film or shatter a world record. He has no plans to run for presidential office, nor does he have unrealistic hopes or dreams about his future.

He has more important things to do – other things to think about. He is a father. He’s is a boxer. Now, he is an Olympic veteran.

Above all else, he is a Marine.

It was a whirlwind year, beginning with a trip to the Olympic trials and ending with Herring staring at the Olympic torch as it was extinguished. Now, he is back home and life will never be exactly the same again.

“I can’t really explain everything about the Olympics, but it was a great experience and something I never thought I would do,” said Herring. “It was really something I appreciated the

chance to be part of.”

For Herring, being part of the USA boxing team at the London Olympics carried a lot of weight. He was acutely aware of his responsibility to his teammates, his country and his family. He was also aware the world would be watching, analyzing his every move and waiting with baited breath for the moment he stepped in the ring.

After spending a few weeks training with other members of the USA boxing team, Herring and his fellow Olympians started their first official night at the Olympics by participating in the Opening Ceremonies. For Herring, the night was a significant anniversary – closer to his heart than to some of his teammates.

The opening ceremonies took place on the two-year anniversary of Herring’s daughter’s death, a tragedy that had a profound impact on his life and sparked a new determination, loyalty and sense of dedication inside Herring, who used

boxing to overcome his grief.

“We missed some of the opening ceremonies because we were all being held in the back, but I remember stepping out for the first time with all my teammates around me and the entire place cheering for the USA, and then looking up to the sky. I said ‘This is for her. This day is for my Ariyanah.”

The death of his daughter wasn’t the only reminder of the hard work it took Herring to make it to London. His boxing career was interrupted by two tours of duty in Iraq in 2005 and 2006, both of which worked to shape him, just like the loss of his daughter.

It would have been all too easy for Herring to let his obstacles consume him, but he was determined to continue his career. Even after making the Olympic team, he refused to bend to critics or let his naysayers get the best of him.

true,” explained Herring.

“I wanted to win – to make my country proud of me. I didn’t just stop trying when I made the team. I wanted to make myself proud.”

Herring’s first and only bout in the ring took place July 31, when he raised his gloves against Kazakhstan’s Daniyar Yeleussinov. With the determination and pride only a Marine could demonstrate, Herring took to the task at hand without hesitation.

Even before his bout began, Herring recalled the sound of crowd in the stadium and the rush of emotions knowing they were all waiting for him.

“While I was getting my hands checked, before I even made it all the way to the ring, I could hear

people yelling and cheering for the USA,” stated Herring. “It was incredible to know they had that sort of confidence in me.

“I stepped into the ring and I remember seeing an American flag and knowing people were counting on me to do the best I could,” Herring continued.

“I knew I didn’t want to let them down.”

With his family watching from home, his Olympic teammates in the stands and the members of the All-Marine Boxing Team cheering for him all the way from North Carolina, Herring readied himself for a three-round fight.

With a final score of 19-9, Herring did not advance to the second round. The knowledge his

Olympic experience was over hit like a ton of bricks, dizzying, depressing and upsetting him in an unexpected way.

“I was really frustrated with not winning,” admitted Herring. “But I knew I still had a job to do.”

Leaving the ring without a win, Herring spent plenty of time talking to members of the media, refusing to let his performance in the ring dictate the way he conducted himself. He recalled one member of the media asking if he was ready to go home since he lost.

“I realized I could have been on the plane coming home the day after my fight, but I wasn’t trained to leave,” Herring said. “They SEE HERRING 7B

Service members don’t give up. They don’t know how to walk away from an incomplete task. Come fire, wind or high waters, they will fight against whatever is thrown their way to reach their goal.

It is this never–give–up attitude that makes the United States military one of the most elite fighting forces on the earth.

But, just like every other fighting force, somebody has to stand behind the men and women on the front lines. Families, friends and local businesses are always looking for ways to support service members in their area.

Support often comes in traditional forms of letters of encouragement, signs tied to fence posts, and yellow ribbons around trees and hung on doors.

Sometimes, shows of support take unconventional form. Once in a while, displays of love and support for the United States military involves getting down and dirty for a good cause.

“The first Step Up For Soldiers’ Combat Mud Run had more than 600 people come out to it last spring,” said event coordinator Steve Ritter.

Step Up For Soldiers, a nonprofit organization founded in Wilmington, N.C., in 2004, began with a simple wish. Founder Tom Russell wanted to build wheelchair ramps for National Guardsmen who were ramps for National Guardsmen who were injured in combat.

To help raise funds necessary to support all five branches of the military, the organization hosted their first combat mud run last spring. The inaugural event drew so many participants, Step Up For Soldiers decided to commit to a second mud run on the outskirts of Wilmington,

N.C., Oct. 6.

“Mud runs have grown increasingly popular in the last few years,” said Ritter.

“When we were planning the first event, we tried to think about what would draw people.”

In planning the second combat mud run, Ritter fed off the feedback he and his team received from the first run.

“We put in a bunch of black tarps in one of the mud pits,” explained Ritter before the event began Saturday. “We wanted to simulate total darkness.”

As individual participants gathered their race packets the morning of the event, they pinned on bibs and secured their clothing.

Without knowing what challenge lay hidden behind the treeline of the forest surrounding the start and finish lines, runners stepped out in faith that their participation in the event was for a good cause.

“The race starts with a tire flip,” Ritter explained. “We have different sized tires lined up and participants have to flip them three times one direction and three times the other. Then, from there they go onto the next challenge.”

In addition to the tire flip, runners took part in a sandbag throw, balance beam exercises, climbed several tire walls, ducked beneath fallen trees, waded through swamps and low crawled through mud pits covered with barbed wire.

By the time they made their way across the finish line, every participant was dripping with sweat and mud, but kept a smile on their faces, secure in the knowledge their trek through uncharted waters was worth their time.

HERRING FROM 5B asked, but I told them I still had a job to do. The Marine side of me kicked in, and I knew I couldn’t do that. I was a team captain, and I wasn’t going to leave anybody behind. The Marine Corps did not train me to behave that way.”

Herring only took one day off from the gym before returning to his teammates to pursue his co-captain position. Still feeling uneasy about the scores he received from his performance in the ring, it took a conversation with a teammate to remind him he was still a necessary part of the USA boxing team.

He returned to the gym with vigor, coaching and helping his teammates who still had bouts to participate in. He ensured he attended every possible fight and cheered for the rest of his team members. Once their fight was over, and they left the ring, he waited for them to speak to members of the media before taking them to the side and having a short pep talk with them, win or lose. These qualities, he said, are part of the reason he believes he was chosen to be a co-captain on the team.

“The other co-captains, (Rau’shee) Warren and Queen Underwood, and I worked well together,” said Herring. “We played off each other. I learned a lot from them, and I hope they learned something from me too.

“I think we all tried to lead by example and handle situations as they came to us. We were like a family, and we had to take care of each other.”

While the USA boxing team’s bouts spanned two weeks, he managed to take in a few other sports. He attended several aquatic events and watched fellow Olympian Michael Phelps win his last gold of the 2012 games. He also had the chance to interact with other athletes in the Olympic village, an opportunity he found both exciting and nerve wracking.

“I met the USA basketball team, which was a big thing for me,” he stated. “It would have been really easy for them to pretend like I was just a fan or another little person, but they were kind and didn’t treat me that way. They really understood we were all on the same team – representing the same country.”

On meeting athletes from other countries, Herring said the experience was truly a once in a lifetime.

“I’ve never been in a room with so many people from all over the world,” he said.

“Everybody was there for the same purpose, and even though we were all from different countries, it was good to see how people represent themselves and act in different parts of the world.”

Of the multitudes of people he met in the Olympic village, Herring made special mention of Army Sgt. Vincent Hancock, captain of the USA Skeet team, fellow service member and Olympian.

“It was nice to be able to sit down and talk with him at least once while I was in London,” said Herring. “I really enjoyed it. He was one of those people I met and was honored to spend some time talking to.”

As the Olympic flame was extinguished and the multitudes left the stadium for the last time, Herring began to prepare himself for the next chapter of his life. When he landed at the airport, he was welcomed home by his family and members from the All-Marine Boxing Team aboard MCB Camp Lejeune.

“Everything I went through in London, all the emotions and the frustration with not doing as well as I planned was gone when I saw my family and team waiting for me,” Herring said. “It was incredible to see them all at the airport, and know they cheered me on and supported me.”

Herring said he was also shocked by the “support from every person on base,” and did his best to remain humble and make his fellow service members, teammates and supporters proud of the way he conducted himself. While he did not return home with a gold medal he was hoping for, Herring said he understands and is grateful for the support he received from friends and family on Twitter and Facebook.

“Jamel Herring, you are a Marine, a veteran and an Olympian,” tweeted one supporter shortly after Herring’s loss. “Who else can say that?”

Herring plans to end his Marine Corps career in November and is preparing to start his professional boxing career as soon as possible.

He understands boxing, like the Marine Corps, is a business where one wrong move can drastically affect the rest of his career. He is carefully examining coaches and speaking with trusted friends, hoping to find the coaching staff ready to help him.

“I have that Marine motto stuck in my head, ‘Once a Marine, always a Marine,’” Herring admitted. “I’m a Marine. I’m also a boxer. I’ve represented my country doing both at the same time. Even after I go pro, the Marine side of me will never leave. Everything else can be handled one step at a time.”

Ask any student-athlete what it takes to succeed in high school sports and their answers will range from “play your hardest” to “become nationally recognized.”

For Lejeune High School senior Chatori Major, it’s all about dedication. And for Major, her dedication to basketball finally paid off, in a big way.

Surrounded by family members and with classmates, teammates and best friends cheering her on, the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune student-athlete made history in the gymnasium of LHS Nov. 16.

Chatori Major signed her national letter of intent to play Division 1 basketball at the University of North Carolina at Asheville in 2013. For Major, who made history last year after she eclipsed 1,000 points during her basketball career at LHS, it was a day long in the making.

“I played in the Amateur Athletic Union over the summers, which is a travel team out of Durham, and I was approached then,” said Major. “I’ve been waiting to sign since August.”

The high school basketball season wasn’t long enough for Major to get her fill of the sport she loves.

She spent her summers traveling with the Durhambased AU basketball team, perfecting her craft and expanding her abilities. With her parents and LHS coaches supporting her every step of the way, Major managed to snag one of UNC-Asheville’s coveted letters of intent for women’s’ basketball along with a full scholarship to the four-year state-funded college, proving hard work and dedication can pay off in a big way.

She’s done very well.”

After verbally agreeing to play at UNC–Asheville earlier in the fall, Major waited for her national letter of intent to be drafted and sent to sign in front of her friends and family. Among those in the gymnasium were her very excited teammates from the women’s basketball team who crowded around her to hug and congratulate Major and her family on the signing.

“I want to continue to get better overall this year,” said Major. “I still need to support my team and do my best for them.

“I’ll be playing basketball until it’s time for me to not play anymore,” she added.

“I won’t quit any time soon.”

Major’s parents were both in attendance and sat beside their daughter as she signed her paperwork. Her two younger sisters were also in attendance at the signing.

“It’s really exciting to

watch her finally do this,” said Major’s mother. “She’s given up summers to play travel ball.”

Major’s parents are already planning to make multiple trips to watch the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs in action next season, and said they would be in the stands whenever possible to watch.

“My parents are my biggest supporters,” said Major. “I wouldn’t be here without everything they do for me. Mom was there for everything, especially when my dad was in Afghanistan.

“My AU coach and teammates were also a big part in getting me here today, and of course I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without Coach Bryant and my team at Lejeune.”

Her father laughed as his daughter talked to happy teammates. “You know, Asheville’s mascot is the bulldog,” he said. “That’s Chatori now; forever a Bulldog.”

‘Les Mis’ delivers punch without ‘Iron Fists’ Now playing at Camp Lejeune “THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS” (R) “The Man with the Iron Fists” is an action adventure and epic martial arts film presented by Quentin Tarantino.

wo silhouettes of terror approached the grounds of Lejeune High School aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune the morning of Oct. 4.

The faces of the men showed no fear, no hesitation, and as their guns rose, a collective gasp from observers echoed through the hallways.

In an unprecedented event uniting the Department of Defense, MCB Camp Lejeune’s emergency response organizations, law enforcement and school system united for the annual Urgent Response exercise.

“This year, our scenario was an active shooter at the high school, which resulted in a mass casualty exercise,” said Joe Hanks, exercise director. “This is the biggest one we’ve done so far with the most people involved.”

For 10 months, leaders brainstormed the possibilities of executing such a complicated maneuver, along with every person and organization it would effect.

The plan was difficult, untried and, if conducted poorly, could result in panic.

However, with the shadow of the 2009 Ft. Hood shootings looming in the not-so-distant past, officials moved forward with the idea, determined not to let history repeat itself.

“We all pray every day something like this doesn’t happen,” explained Col. Brad Vickers, assistant chief of staff for base operations. “But if it does, it is incumbent upon us to be absolutely prepared and to react in the best way possible. It’s close to home, and it’s important we get this right.”

Parts were set into motion immediately.

“Productive things happened before we even carried out the exercise,” noted Randy Hall, exercise coordinator. “The base updated the emergency response plans between the school and the military police to try and fill in any gaps.”

The decision to carry out the event at LHS was not taken lightly.

“Based on historical and recent events, the school seemed like the best place to practice the mock attack,” Hall said. “Something unique to this exercise was how officials held town hall meetings with parents and staff.”

Eric Steimel, LHS principal, admitted his initial concern was how parents would react to the drill.

“No one understands better the importance of training than a Marine,” he stated. “Parents were exceptionally supportive and thankful to know we are going the extra mile to keep their children safe.”

Steimel and his staff pushed the plan intentionally from the first day of school, keeping the parents informed and even practicing two lockdown drills with the students.

“The students were very cooperative,” Steimel commented. “(They) did not treat this as a joke. They seemed to understand and appreciate the seriousness of this and why we’re doing it.”

By the time the Urgent Response Exercise arrived, all teams were on their toes, ready to play their roles.

The scenario involved two gunmen entering the school, scuffling with the School Resource Officer, shooting victims in the gymnasium and ultimately being caught by incoming response teams.

Official observers, including visiting members of the Department of Defense Education Activity, followed the action of the attack and took note of the time it took each team to respond.

Marines volunteered to play the roles of injured and deceased students, and Cpl. Jacob Bryan, Headquarters and Support Company, acted his part perfectly continuing a constant scream for help throughout the exercise.

“I was trying to make it as realistic as possible,” he shrugged. “In a situation like this, that’s how it would be for most (military police) and firemen.”

Military police officers worked diligently, checking each classroom and securing the area, including the gym.

“Our team did really well,” noted Officer Matthew Simpkins. “It’s important for the everyone to see how we all work together.”

Brewster Middle School’s SRO, Darla Watkins, watched as the response teams brought Steimel in to identify victims, who continued to ask for help and moan as if they’d been shot.

“Because we’re protectors of the children, you get anxious,” she said. “My job is to protect these kids. Something like this is necessary because you get all

the people who would be involved to work together in the situation. We have to work together to create unity. We train for this, not just inside the schools but outside as well.”

The most chilling moment of the exercise came as the initial response team prepared to move out and medical support came in to assess injuries and move victims to Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune.

Hidden in the small space between the wall and bleachers, a Marine acting as a student in shock sat staring straight ahead with his knees pulled his chest.

Even after being discovered, he did not break character and medics treated him as a patient.

Steimel admitted he had a strong reaction when entering the gym full of victims, but he also observed how quickly and effectively each unit moved.

“One of the biggest messages I learned was the importance of communication,”

he responded. “I was overwhelmingly impressed with how much support is out there. It’s amazing how many people were mobilized and put into motion with only one or two phone calls.”

The action changed locations as Fire and Emergency Services transported the mass casualty targets to NHCL where medical personnel stood by, ready to conduct their part of the exercise.

Identifications, treatments and assessments of patients were performed seamlessly.

Even the surprise of two Marines portraying students who self-evacuated the school didn’t throw the hospital staff off task.

“I feel more confident,” said Steimel.

“I think the exercise was very productive. Schools across the United States don’t have foolproof procedures. No organization does. So you study, learn, and constantly work to improve.”

“Participants range from the old salts that have been retired for years down to the junior enlisted guys that just got in,” said Victoria Braggiotti, a recreational specialist with MCCS. “This is a really neat demographic because it pulls everybody. These car and bike owners can talk forever amongst themselves, and it really shows how much they love it.”

The USO of North Carolina Jacksonville Center is a place where service members and the local community can have fun and relax, but in its shadows lie mysterious forces that open and close doors when nobody is around, touch and scratch guests and employees, and leave people with an eerie feeling.

A local radio station, along with the South East Paranormal Investigation Association, brought Bruce Tango, a frequent guest investigator with “Ghost Hunters,” a SyFy network TV show and the father of one of “Ghost Hunters” main investigators Dave Tango, to host an event where professional and amateur investigators could look into allegations of paranormal activity in the facility.

Tickets for the event sold out quickly and all proceeds went to the USO. “You never know what you’re going to run into,” said Tango.

Community gathers to remember fallen heroes AMY BINKLEY

She sits alone on the grave, face downcast.

Though her thoughts are unheard, the cries of her heart echo as loud as thunder.

She has loved, and she has lost.

Her solace is found among the stars and stripes marking the final resting place of hundreds of brave warriors and knowing she is not alone in her mourning or her memories.

Service members, both past and present, their families and members of the community

gathered to remember their fallen brothers during the annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, N.C., Monday.

“We all have our own reasons for coming today,” said Maj. Gen. Paul E. Lefebvre, commanding general of U.S. Marine Corps Special Operations Command.

For the past four years, the service, hosted by the Military Order of the Purple Heart Beirut Memorial Chapter 642, has given hundreds of people the chance to pay their respects.

Dominated by the

presence of military installations like Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River, residents of Onslow County and the surrounding areas have felt the loss of sons and daughters who have not returned home from the front lines.

“The people (here) know that every freedom, every right we have is because of those veterans who died,” noted Chapter 642 Commander Verl Matthews.

“They gave it all.”

“I’d like to show you something,” beckons Robert Royster, an older gentleman comfortably in his 80s whose deep laugh lines hint at a well-lived life.

Royster saunters into the dimly lit room and toward a large display of old photographs.

“That’s my sixth grade class,” he says, pointing to a yellowed picture. “And that’s me in the middle, the good-looking one.”

As he stares at the image of his younger self, memories of a simple time long before computers and cell phones flashed in his eyes. He stands surrounded by the history of the only place he’s ever considered home – Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

The Onslow County Museum opened its new exhibit, “Remembering Camp Lejeune: The Forties,” to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the base Jan. 21.

“We love telling the story,” said Lisa Whitman-Grice, museum director. “Camp Lejeune was a carefully planned dream that turned into the real thing.”

Bing connects with teens, builds library legacy AMY BINKLEY

In the depths of the Peppermint Forest across the Gumdrop Pass along the banks of the Chocolate Swamp, a loyal group of friends converged for their scheduled counsel.

Sweets, spaceships and the future of their kingdom were subjects brought to the table at the Harriotte B. Smith Library aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune July 24, but the focus of their discussion centered on their most trusted confidant and fearless leader.

“She’s a cross between your favorite kindergarten teacher, favorite aunt and your mom,” described Lauren Estep, a member of the Teen Advisory Group. “She treats us like adults and values our opinions.”

Fran Bing, youth services technician, built a legacy of love on a foundation of friendship during her 28 year tenure at the library, and as the 2012 summer reading program, “Reading is So Delicious,” winds down, her core teen group can’t help but gush about their guide.

“She has a deep love and a fondness for us,” said Shannon Fowler, a TAG member.

“She takes so much care in giving us a place to hang out.”

Bing’s devotion has made her a legend of sorts among members of the group, who have seen the hours she’s spent planning and executing events for them.

“She really, truly cares,” Estep explained.

“For her, it’s not just a day job where she’s just nice because she’s told to be.”

In an effort to show their appreciation, the teens took it upon themselves to surprise Bing at their latest summer reading program event – a fondue night – by bringing the Candyland board game to life.

Bing sat on the sidelines, beaming with pride, as she watched seasoned teens welcome new faces to the group.

“When you have such a great group of kids, how could I not love it?” she commented about her job. “They keep me young and in touch. I may not know everything about video games or other things they do, but I know more than most people my age.”

Her lack of familiarity with the everchanging interests of teenagers doesn’t deter Bing from her missions to help teens build a relationship with the library and to let them know they have someone who is

there for them. “(Most) teens just want someone to talk to and to listen to them,” she acknowledged. “I’ve seen so many of them grow up. Some of the privates who would volunteer with us years ago are now gunnery sergeants and married with kids. They haven’t forgotten us.”

Bing’s attempts to stay connected with the young crowd haven’t gone unnoticed, and the current crop of teens is thankful for her hard work.

“For most teens, this time is pretty rough,” said TAG member Irelyn Fowler.

“It’s nice to just have someone there. ” Bing doesn’t take credit for the success of the program.

“I let the kids know they are allowed to be who they are,” she stated. “I turn them loose and let them make the plans.”

Estep, who has been a library program regular since elementary school, pointed out Bing’s willingness to consider every idea, her active engagement in their conversations, and her constant encouragement of their reading and other interests makes her a valuable asset to the library.

“Ms. Fran beyond encourages us to make (the program) ours,” Estep said. “She listens to our ideas and let’s us go through with a lot of them. She’s also a big geek and regrets nothing about it.”

The Fowler sisters agree, adding how their leader’s spontaneity produces crazy, fun ideas, and her friendliness makes everyone feel welcome.

“We’re not a typical library group, or maybe we are,” Irelyn Fowler mused.

“What people see on the outside is much different than what happens inside. She’s taught us to be open and accepting of everyone. It’s about making bonds with people who know what you’re going through.”

As the tastiest summer reading program on record approached its final stage, Bing remained steadfast, looking forward to new faces and events.

“We try to stretch out the summer reading program as long as we can so we can include those kids who are moving here right before the school year starts,” she said.

While the future of the teen library program looks bright, Bing seems happiest when handing the reigns over to her protégés and seeing them grow in their own leadership qualities.

“They are fantastic,” she boasted.

I am on edge.

My senses are heightened, my situational awareness is acute and my discernment of the undead is on point.

Hype over the impending zombie apocalypse grew at an alarming speed this year after the horrific, almost unbelievable attack of a crazed man’s strange behavior in Miami. If you’re interested in more details and have a strong stomach, a quick Google search will give you more than you’ll ever want to know.

I’ll admit I fell victim to the shocking amount of publicity given to the story, but after literally drafting a zombie survival kit wish list, I realized it was time to calm down. This is nothing new.

Zombies aren’t coming.

They’re already here.

You may think I’m crazy, but I’m telling the truth. I know because I used to be one.

Now before anyone becomes too terribly concerned, I stand in agreement with the Center for Disease Control when I say I don’t believe or have knowledge of anything that would cause the deceased to reanimate.

Dead is dead.

However, just because I haven’t seen physical corpses stumbling around downtown doesn’t mean

I won’t presume to know what you’ve been through in your life. We all fight our own battles. What separates us from the zombies, however, is our ability to feel. That, and we prefer macaroni and cheese for dinner.

When we choose to go numb in order to protect ourselves, we don’t just cut ourselves off from the hurtful emotions but all of them.

We literally become the emotionally living dead.

What’s worse is our bites of negativity spoken out of our pain can not only send people running but also kill or contaminate those we care about.

There is hope. You have another choice. You can decide to take a deep breath and shock yourself back to life.

It will probably be uncomfortable. Reanimating after an emotional coma may leave you confused and unsteady at first, but it’s worth it.

When I made my choice to come back to the land of the living, I was frightened. Would I be bombarded by negativity? Would I be accepted by those I had detached myself from?

The answers were unclear at first, but with each new day, I breathed a little easier.

Nothing trumps death, and I already defeated it.

There’s nothing shameful in grieving, crying or feeling sad over lost things or people. But when you’re done, wipe your tears, wash your face and breathe deep. Don’t be afraid to live again.

Soon, not only will you feel better, you’ll look better too.

Zombies, after all, aren’t known for their stellar style.

Beware the living dead zombies don’t exist. One look around our community, our friends and even our family cements my belief an emotional zombie epidemic swept the world.

Life is hard, and at some point it’s given all of us ample opportunities to build state-of-the-art self-defense systems around our hearts and emotions not even the most strategic hacker could penetrate.

We see vulnerability as weakness because when we exposed our true selves we got hurt.

Maybe you were picked on as a child for having red hair or maybe you’ve gone through a horrible break up or even divorce. Maybe you survived a harsh deployment but your comrades did not. Maybe you’re constantly misunderstood.

Whatever happened, you swore you’d never let it happen again. You’ve decided it’s better to feel nothing than to feel the pain. You’ve gone numb.

Cue zombie-mode.

I am keenly aware of this particular phenomenon because I have emotionally “died” and come back to life.

I thought I was in love once. The heights of it were glorious, but the lows were unbearable. When the relationship ended, I anesthetized my emotions. I still functioned, going through my daily routines mindlessly, but I moved toward safety, comfort and utterly refused to do anything even remotely challenging. I could have been the star of “The Walking Dead.”

After a while though, I missed being alive.

I missed rejoicing with my friends over small and big victories, crying a normal amount of tears during Hallmark commercials and cheering during sports games even if I wasn’t sure what was going on.
