The two-hour event included junior and senior Sailors from various commands, as well as DoD civilians, becoming more educated and aware about information and services provided to them during a presentation at the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit Oceana.

Rigell was raised in a working class family and spent six years in the Marine Corps Reserves. He said when he and his wifeTeri first married,his net worth was zero.They had no living room furniture for the first few years and his daughter’s playhouse was the box the refrigerator came in. But through hard work and good decisions, he was able to become who he is today, which includes being the

founder and chairman of Freedom Automotive in Virginia Beach.

“Living within one’s means is one of the principal ways that we stay fiscally sound,” said Rigell.

During his speech, Rigell stressed that one of the keys to financial success is being content and grateful with what we have, which reduces the temptation to use credit to buy things we don’t necessarily need.

“You reap what you sow, you reap more than you sow and you reap later than you sow; this is a universal truth,” said Rigell.

Rigell also shared a secret he learned from legendary investor Warren Buffett.

“If you look at his life and talk to him, it’s consistency, just a very disciplined approach,” said Rigell.

“Start now, however modestly, and ideally through payroll deduction,” Rigell advised. “Because much like the taxes that are taken out of our checks, it’s not quite as painful.”

Synthetic chemical compound abuse

(NNS) — The Navy continued to emphasize the policy of zero tolerance for substance abuse by separating 1,515 Sailors in fiscal year 2011 for synthetic chemical compounds, commonly called Spice, and other drug usage according to an official Feb. 21.

“Currently, we are discharging a number of Sailors for use of synthetic chemical compounds also known as Spice, sighting failure to obey a direct order,” said Lanorfeia Holder, deputy director of Navy Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention (NADAP). “Those that are tested by our Armed Forces Medical Examiner System (AFMES) are discharged under an Article 92 misconduct or an Article 112A which is drug abuse.”

A ban was placed on five synthetic cannabis compounds commonly found in the designer drug Spice, but also sold under different names, just one year ago March 1. AFMES has the ability to test for those five compounds via Navy Criminal Investigative Services (NCIS) at the request of unit commanders if probable cause is determined.

Spice is a synthetic chemical compound that is sold as herbal incense and mimics the effects of the drug marijuana. Some of the compounds were initially developed as research to help individuals with — See Drug Usage, Page 8

Tax preparation assistance The Naval Legal Services Office Mid-Atlantic Oceana Branch Office is providing tax preparation assistance through April 17 to active duty, retired military and their family members and reservists on active duty for more than 29 days.

All tax assistance centers have transitioned from one-onone preparation (VITA/ELF) to self-service tax assistance preparation (with limited exceptions). Self-service allows individuals to file returns electronically using an onlinebased filing program while receiving assistance as needed from IRS-trained tax center personnel.

The NAS Oceana Tax Assistance Center is located in building 320, 799 Hornet Drive, Suite 100. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday. This site will accommodate walk-ins at self-service tax preparation terminals on a first come-first served basis, and provide one-on-one tax preparation services which is limited to customers unable to use self-service terminals due to disability (on an appointment basis only). (NNS) — Representatives from Navy Personnel Command’s fleet engagement team will meet with Sailors, families and leadership at Norfolk area bases March 5 - 8 to discuss Post Enlisted Retention Board (ERB) matters and transition assistance efforts available for ERB-affected Sailors.

“We’re providing face-to-face interaction with the Sailors and spouses affected by ERB and the commands that support them so these Sailors have a better understanding of the policies, procedures and transition benefits related to ERB,” said Fleet Engagement Team Leader Capt. Steve Holmes, director, community management branch, Bureau of Naval Personnel.Topics covered include Involuntary Separation Pay eligibility and application procedures, Selected Reserve and Ready Reserve Affiliation,Temporary Early Retirement Authority and other transition benefits.

The fleet engagement team is composed of representatives from the enlisted distribution division, enlisted community management division, career development program and the Navy’s ERB transition assistance coordinator.

They will conduct all-hands briefs at the following Norfolk area locations: • Naval Station Norfolk, March 5 - 6 • NAS Oceana, March 7 • JEB Little Creek-Fort Story, March 8 The team will be accompanied by representatives from Challenger, Gray and Christmas (CGC), an employment outplacement firm contracted by the Navy to provide personalized career coaching and job search assistance to ERB affected Sailors. CGC representatives will meet one-on-one with ERB affected Sailors and their spouses to develop an individually tailored job search based on individual qualifications, experience and abilities. CGC will craft resumes for and provide personalized job search coaching to aid in transition.

“Challenger, Gray and Christmas consider it our mission to support these Sailors through their job search process and to help them land a job,”said CGC representative,Mike McCalip, executive director, Herdt-CGC.

No great thing?

BY CMDR. VINSON MILLER NAS Oceana Command Chaplain I am a creature of habit, like everyone else. Some are consciously chosen habits and others are entirely subconscious.

Given that I rise early in order to commute to NAS Oceana all the way from the other side of the dreaded Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, I hit a drive-thru. Recommended by my 16-year old son who appears to know every place where food is cheap, the price is even right!

Around the third or fourth time I had driven up, I heard a voice say“I got you.Diet Coke with light ice and a ham biscuit.” I had not placed my order (and have yet to figure out where the camera is on the menu board).

Yet, I was intrigued at the rapid memorization of what I like, by a complete stranger. My wife and daughter can do that but I know it is an unusual gift.

It was said by Mother Theresa that “We can do no great things, but we can do small things with great love.” One morning I pulled up with an empty wallet, only to discover that I’d left my debit card at home. She said,“I gotcha....Don’t worry about it.It’s already made.”

It took me by surprise.Who at a chain drive-thru, does that? And yes, I repaid her the next morning!

I called the restaurant a few days later, after I’d cleared the HRBT tube and worst of the traffic. I asked the manager for the name of the person who tends the drive-thru every morning. Her name is Brenda. I now call her by name every morning and I appreciate her meticulous and rapid work at such an early hour as I brace for the tunnel.

Each time I pull into the drive-thru, the routine repeats with the same clear voice, before I can place my order, with her “I got you, baby.” I’m almost 53, so I always chuckle at that last word, a colloquial way of being friendly and gracious. I tend to notice politeness, graciousness, or whatever word we’d put to it, because of how increasingly rare it is in our society nowadays.

One recent week was a particularly long and difficult one, for both the hours worked and the stressful events that required my energy. I rolled up to the window contemplating the day ahead.The routine repeated, but as the window opened and my diet drink was passed — See Small things, Next page

Supply Corps celebrates 217th anniversary

BY DEBBIE DORTCH NAVSUP Corporate Communications MECHANICSBURG,Pa.(NNS) —The Navy Supply Corps celebrated its 217th anniversary Feb. 23, commemorating a history that traces back to 1795.

At its inception, the Supply Corps supported the Navy’s six frigates. Since that time, the duties and responsibilities of the Supply Corps have evolved to keep pace with the expanding scope of the Navy’s global mission.

“Today’s Supply Corps is a key enabler of the Navy’s global force for good at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels,”said Rear Adm. Mark Heinrich, chief of Supply Corps and commander, Naval Supply Systems Command.

“By delivering logistics capabilities to the Navy and joint warfighter, the Supply Corps provides mission-essential supplies that keep ships, aircraft, submarines and expeditionary forces ready for tasking.”

There are more than 3,500 active and Reserve component naval officers serving on nearly every afloat platform and in a full range of expeditionary environments, as well as at hundreds of shore installations located worldwide.

They are trained and employed in three principal lines of operation: supply chain management, acquisition man-

agement and operational logistics. Complementing these lines of operations are skills in comptrollership, operations research, and business management.

All Supply Corps officers are graduates of the Navy Supply Corps School, now located in Newport, R.I. It is here where officers are educated in disciplines such as supply management, expeditionary logistics, inventory control, disbursement, financial management, contracting, information systems, operations analysis, material and operational logistics,fuels management,physical distribution and food service.

“As we celebrate 217 years of proud service to the fleet, all of us who wear the oak leaf can take great pride in our history, in our traditions, and in a community that has always been an enabling part of the CNO’s (chief of naval operations) tenets-warfighting first; operate forward; be ready,” Heinrich said. “As we face challenges of a dynamic world environment, which will tax our capabilities to their limit, the logistics expertise and business acumen that Navy Supply Corps officers bring to the table is a skill set more coveted than ever. For 217 years we have been ‘ready for sea,’ and I am proud to be celebrating this birthday as the chief of the Navy’s premiere staff corps.”

British test pilot marks milestone in the F-35C

BY VICTOR CHEN F-35 Integrated Test Force Public Affairs PATUXENT RIVER, Md. (NNS) — A Royal Air Force (RAF) squadron leader became the United Kingdom’s first military test pilot to fly the F-35C, the carrier variant of the Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft Feb. 21.

As an international program, the F-35 has eight cooperative partners working with the United States; the United Kingdom (UK) was the first country to join the program in January 2001.The UK is planning to purchase the carrier variant to enter service as the joint combat aircraft (JCA).

“The F-35 has the best handling of any jet I’ve flown, which means it’s going to be easier to land on a ship than current aircraft.And pilots can devote all of their attention to the mission,” said Jim Schofield, RAF squadron leader.

“Combined with the world’s best sensors which allow the pilot to find and target anything that’s out there, and a stealthy signature, which means the enemy can’t do the same to you, this is exactly the aircraft the UK needs to provide the best protection for our soldiers, sailors and airmen for the next 35 years,” he further explained.

Exercise Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield taking place this month on naval bases, installations From U.S. Fleet Forces Command Public Affairs NORFOLK (NNS) — Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces (USFF) and Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) are in the final stages of planning the Force Protection and Anti-Terrorism (FP/AT) exercise Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield (SC/CS) 2012 to be conducted on naval bases and installations throughout the continental United States March 19 - 24.

These annual exercises are designed to enhance the training and readiness of Navy security forces to respond to threats to installations and units.The two exercises,each with a distinct focus, occur simultaneously and will stress different areas of the Navy’s anti-terrorism program to enhance the training and readiness of naval security force personnel to respond to real-world threats.

There will be an increase in patrols on and around Navy installations as a result of this planned exercise. Exercise SC/CS 2012 is not in response to any specific threat, but is a regularly scheduled exercise.

Measures have been taken to minimize disruptions to normal base and station operations,but there may be times when the exercise causes increased traffic around bases or delays in base access.

Sometimes we do not know, nor do others know our name or much about us.Yet, the “small things” we do for others with the understanding that the human condition for all of us involves some measure of “battle,” is the better nature of being a human being. I note this as many of us are amid a season known as “Lent” which serves as a time of reflection for those of the Christian tradition. Every faith seems to set aside such a period for re-centering in what is most important, including how we treat one another if we would truly honor God. So, the person you encounter at a drive-thru, or at a quarterdeck or in a hanger.... may or may not be someone like Brenda, but the real question is: Who are we unto others, as to kindness and respect? What habits mark our conduct toward others? What habits are we choosing to make an intrinsic and visible part of ourselves as human beings — and yes, as those who wear our nation’s cloth?

Military Saves: nationwide campaign highlights importance of fiscal responsibility — Continued from page 1 Webb signed an official proclamation supporting the Military Saves program for 2012.Webb said it’s important to understand the programs and the information offered to every service member as to what’s available to them to make life choices.

“This information, especially in this day and age, is so incredibly important,” said Webb.“This is our chance to be proactive with the kind of information that’s important that leads them to success five, 10, 15 and 20 years down the road, so we got to take this seriously.”

All the speakers at the event stressed the importance of managing credit and checking annual credit reports.Also addressed was how Sailors’ individual fiscal responsibility can affect the Navy as a whole by potentially undermining force readiness.

Crystal Forehand, command security manager at Oceana, gave a presentation highlighting the lack of fiscal responsibility as the leading cause for Sailors’security clearances being revoked. According to Forehand, 228,049 adjudications were issued in fiscal year 2011, most being at the secret level.Adjudication as it pertains to security clearances is any final decision made by Department of the Navy Central Adjudication Facility (DONCAF) about the status of a security clearance. Final decisions include clearances being issued, revoked and notices of scrutiny among other things. One Sailor can potentially be issued several adjudications in a fiscal year that reflect any changes in security clearance status.

“Financial considerations seem to be the biggest problem,” said Forehand.“The financial considerations continue, and it has been a trend for at least the last 10 years.”

Fiscal responsibility is a critical part of military readiness according to Rigell. He said there’s a direct link between military readiness and an individual service member’s state

of mind.

“You don’t want that young man or young woman, as they’re watching an F/A-18 come in, to have anything on their mind other than that operation,” said Rigell.“You don’t want them thinking,‘I’m two months behind on my car payment or three’ or ‘how am I going to pay this bill?’”

According to the Military Saves website, Military Saves is a social marketing campaign to persuade, motivate and encourage military families to save money every month, and to convince leaders and organizations to be aggressive in promoting automatic savings.

The campaign is a growing network of organizations and individuals committed to helping and supporting military members and their families build personal savings arsenals to provide for their immediate and long term financial needs, according to the Military Saves website.

Military Saves was developed and tested by its non-profit sponsor, Consumer Federation of America (CFA) and the military services from 2003 to 2006 and launched throughout the Department of Defense (DoD) on February 25, 2007. It is part of two larger campaigns -- the DoD Financial Readiness Campaign and the America Saves campaign.

While it is an ongoing campaign, the entire military community comes together to focus on financial readiness during Military Saves Week, the last full week in February.

EMALS is the current launching system of record for the future HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier, currently under construction.

“This is another major step forward for the UK’s Joint Combat Aircraft programme,” said Group Capt. Harv Smyth, the UK’s JSF national deputy. “Squadron Leader Schofield is now test-flying both the [short takeoff and vertical landing] and carrier variants of the F-35, which affords the UK unprecedented early learning regarding this 5th-generation air system.This is a very exciting period for JCA, as not only are we now testing both the B and the C variants,but we look forward to taking delivery of our first production F-35 aircraft later this year.”

According to the RAF’s website, the F-35 employed as the JCA in UK forces will offer many advantages over legacy platforms: low observability, supersonic flight, improved survivability, internal and external weapons carriage, increased range and easier supply and maintenance.

The F-35C carrier variant of JSF is distinct from the F35A and F-35B variants, with its larger wing surfaces and reinforced landing gear to withstand catapult launches and deck landing impacts associated with the demanding aircraft carrier environment.The F-35C is undergoing test and evaluation at Naval Air Station Patuxent River prior to delivery to the fleet and international partners.

VFA-131 ‘Wildcats’ kick off the year in Fallon

FRANK SACCO VFA-131 Public Affairs Officer Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 131 returned from a four week Air Wing Fallon detachment at the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center (NSAWC) in Fallon, Nev. on Feb. 5. The training is designed to simulate combat conditions and the operational tempo that pilots and maintainers may experience when once deployed as a carrier air wing.

The “Cats” set the example by dropping 43,152 pounds of ordnance including CBU-99 Rockeye, 2,000 pound MK84 General Purpose bombs, GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munitions, GBU-12 Laser Guided Precision Weapons, several thousand rounds of 20mm ammunition, and dozens of heavy and light inert weapons. Once again, Wildcat maintainers exemplified their excellence throughout this high-tempo training period by continually providing mission capable F/A-18Cs for 283 sorties and 412 flight hours.

“Wildcat” pilots primarily focused on conducting large force strike missions against tactical targets located within the Fallon Range Complex. VFA-131 also took the fight to the bandits, engaging in multiple air-to-air scenarios, ranging from section engaged maneuvering to large force offensive and defensive counters air missions. In addition to the

Long-term effects from the designer drug can include permanent physical impairment, mental illness or death.

“We have Sailors who are having mental conditions that they will never recover from,” said Holder.“Using synthetic chemical compounds is like playing Russian roulette; you never know what is in the package.As detection catches up with manufacturers, makers alter the ingredients in an attempt to avoid detection.”

OPNAVINST 5350.4D defines the scope of drug abuse as the wrongful use of controlled substances to include designer drugs, illicit-use anabolic steroids, prescription or over-the-counter medication.

The unlawful possession or use by Department of the Navy personnel of controlled substance analogues (designer drugs), natural substances, chemicals wrongfully used as inhalants, propellants, prescribed or over-thecounter medication or pharmaceutical compound with the intent to induce intoxication, excitement or stupefaction of the central nervous system is prohibited via SECNAVINST 5300.28D. Violators are subject to punitive action under the Uniform Code of Military Justice,Article 92.

“If a Sailor is having issues with drug abuse or synthetic chemical compound use specifically, we recommend that they reach out to Military-One Source for confidential assessment and counseling at no cost to the Sailor,”said Holder.“We also recommend members seeking substance use counseling talk with their doctor, chain-of-command or self-refer to a substance abuse rehabilitation program.”

PERRON Naval Medical Center Portsmouth Public Affairs A dozen Branch Health Clinic Oceana staff participated in the Black History Month celebration Feb. 24, with the theme “Things They Didn’t Tell You.” The event featured staff portraying historical figures and participants gave speeches,sang songs and performed reenactments.

The choice of the theme began a month prior when organizers decided to highlight people and events that may not be well known, but had a significant impact on Black history.

“We want our audience to get a feel for Black history and really embrace the culture,” said Hospital Corpsman (HM) 1st Class Donald Banks, the leading petty officer of the Pharmacy Department and one of the organizers.“We want to depict people who had a major role in the development of the country, that in many cases that role is not taught, but passed by word of mouth.”

The first portrayal was by HM3 Matthew Jones of Primary Care acting as Abraham Lincoln, who spoke about the Emancipation Proclamation and the ratification of the 13th Amendment.

Next to speak was HM1(SW/AW/FMF) Cedric Odom of Physical Therapy, who portrayed John Hanson,a man who led the united colonies before the Declaration of Independence.

“While I was researching the role of John Hanson, I ran across a book called ‘Things They Didn’t Tell You,” said Odom. “It felt really good to remember him, because by making people aware of such people, we can better build a future together.”

Speaking as Hanson during the ceremony, Odom explained how the role of president had been poorly defined, and that Hanson established the Treasury Department, the Secretary of War and the Foreign Affairs Department. He also declared Nov. 28, 1782, as a day of Thanksgiving.

HM1(SW) Mary Wilkins, administrative chief, sang, “At Last,” while portraying singer Etta James; and HN Steve Leach of Primary Care sang a few lines as Sam Cooke.

The last portrayal was a spirited reenactment of Rosa Parks’s famous act of civil disobedience on a Montgomery, Ala., bus in 1955. Clinic staff portrayed police who forcibly removed Parks after she refused to move to the back of the bus, an action leading to the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Civil Rights movement. Sharon Adams of Aviation Medicine played Parks and Cmdr.Martin Kerr,OIC of the clinic,played the bus driver.

After the reenactment, Kerr spoke about the importance of remembering Black history.

“We do these things so we don’t forget many kinds of history,” Kerr said.“It is important. Quoting George Santayana,‘Those who don’t remember the past are doomed to repeat it.’

“Remember the sacrifices of those before us across American culture,” Kerr continued.“Always remember there’s more to it than those who are recognized. Think about those ordinary people who have gone unrecognized.”

Kerr then read the poem,“A Rock, a River, a Tree,” by Maya Angelou.

“I choose this poem because it talks about hope and remembrance,” Kerr added.“It is important to continue to remember to build a future.”

At the end of the celebration, the audience was invited to a food sampling that included food and desserts specific to Black history.

Taekwondo champions train at Oceana STORY BY CATHY HEIMER • PHOTOS BY MC3 ANTONIO TURRETTO RAMOS Every Tuesday and Wednesday at the Hornet’s Nest Fitness Center, nearly 45 children, teens and adults get together to get into shape and have some fun,while learning discipline and teamwork — all through three Taekwondo classes offered through MWR at NAS Oceana.

The Taekwondo class also sports a championship team.

Ten kids competed in the 2012 Friendship Tournament at Virginia Wesleyan College Jan. 28 and all 10 earned at least one metal, bronze, silver or gold. Students competed in forms, which involves a series of movements in a set pattern with no contact with an opponent, and sparring, which is direct contact with an opponent.

During the Friendship Tournament, Lucas Gurney, 7, earned a bronze medal for sparring — his first medal at his first tournament. Gurney explained his first competition taught him to “fight harder when you don’t know someone because you don’t know how good they are.”

Although he also earned a silver medal for forms, Gurney said the best part of the tournament was sparring.

Kentrell Horn-Taylor, 13, has earned his red belt in the four years since joining the classes and picked up a gold medal in both sparring and forms at the tournament.

“When I was in elementary school,I got picked on a lot,so my dad signed me up for Taekwondo and I’ve loved it ever since,” Horn-Taylor explained why he originally joined the class.

The Plaza Middle School student also plays football and wrestles.“It helps with other sports; it keeps me in shape,” Horn-Taylor said.

The Oceana classes are the only ones he’s taken and part of that has to do with Elmore“Preston”Pedigo, the instructor.“He’s nice, he cares for his students. He’ll slow down and work with us. It’s like a family here,” said Horn-Taylor.

Navy skiers ranked 10th nationally

Also referred to as“Sabonim,”a Korean title that signifies a master level martial arts instructor, Pedigo has taught the Taekwondo classes at Oceana for the past 17 years.

Pedigo, a fifth degree black belt, explained he got into martial arts as a way to keep the weight off and get some exercise, which led to tournaments and becoming an instructor after his retirement from the Navy as a master chief. Pedigo is assisted by Robert Moore, who at 77 years of age is a third degree black belt.

What Pedigo enjoys about the Oceana program is being able to mentor and work with the kids.Over the years,he’s received many calls from current and former students.

Some have called him when they’re in a crisis situation.“I go pick them up and take them home, where they need to be,” said Pedigo.

One of his favorite memories was being invited to a former Taekwondo student’s graduation from the Virginia Commonwealth ChalleNGe, an intervention program for at-risk teens.

Salem High School junior Thomas Leal returned from the tournament with more than a bronze medal in forms.

During the sparring competition, his nose was the accidental recipient of a missed kick, resulting in it being broken.The trip to the hospital in the middle of the competition ruined his hopes for another medal in sparring. But Leal shrugged off the injury, preferring to focus on all the good lessons he’s learned during nearly five years of Taekwondo.The classes have taught him commitment and “I just like the environment and it gives me something to do, instead of being at home, bored.”

The women’s ski team and both snowboard teams also qualified for the regional competition.

The men’s team earned eight first place and two second place finishes out of 10 races during the regular season.

The teams compete in the Allegheny Conference, one of 11 collegiate snow and ski conferences in the U.S. The Allegheny Conference includes teams from Penn State,West Virginia, Bucknell, Carnegie Mellon,West Chester and Villanova.

“We were very surprised, since Penn State has been the strongest competitor,” said Midshipman 1st Class Garrett Long, team captain.“For the last few weekends the team has been very active and united.”

The women’s snowboard team, led by Midshipman 1st Class Nicole Leonard and Midshipman 2nd Class Caitlin Fine, took 2nd in the Allegheny Conference. The men’s

team, led by Midshipman 1st Class Ryan Goldsmith and Midshipmen 2nd Class Brian Gureck and Bill Gureck,took several individual top-five finishes during the season.

“It is very exciting to be able to compete,” said Midshipman 2nd Class Pat Paap.“It’s all about teamwork.You really have to come together and understand not only your needs but also other teammate’s needs.We definitely help and coach each other.”

“We are helping each other prep the skis, which is definitely one of the main things you can do to get ready for the race,” said Midshipman 4th Class Stefan Schmidt.“It’s also important to stay confident and not freak out during the competition.”

The ski and snowboard teams hope to qualify for the national competition which will be held March 5 - 10 in Maine.

Pukin’ Dogs prepare for upcoming deployment

From lectures to large force strikes, the Pukin’ Dogs proved their mettle throughout the challenges of Air Wing Fallon. Starting with a building block approach, the basics were reďŹ ned during sorties designed to enhance smart weapon delivery and hard target penetration.

To ramp up the intensity, the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center (NSAWC) provided scenario-based mission objectives for CVW-7 to execute. These mission objectives focused on teamwork across the air wing, utilizing all members of the CVW-7 combat team. The executed objectives included air-to-air, air-to-surface, suppression of enemy air defense (SEAD),

combat search and rescue (CSAR), and close air support (CAS). The Pukin’ Dogs provided support for every axis of employment, paving the way for mission success.

During the detachment, the Pukin Dogs expended approximately 62,000 pounds of live and inert ordnance, ranging from Mk-80 series unguided bombs to the GBU-54 Laser Guided Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM), and 20mm cannon rounds in strafe deliveries.

Mission success is constantly measured in metrics of validation and target destruction and demands the very best of pilots during air to ground deliveries. The Pukin’ Dogs answered the call, executing precision strikes with professionalism and expertise.

The Pukin’Dogs and the rest of CVW-7 strive to carry the momentum from a successful Air Wing Fallon into the rest of work-ups and upcoming deployment. Following this stage of training, the squadron will embark aboard Eisenhower for Tailored Ship’s Training Availability (TSTA). During the upcoming phases of training, many unique challenges await the CVW-7 team that will test the readiness and performance of all Sailors and pilots.

Taekwondo: students learn valuable life skills — Continued from page 9 females of all ages as males, including Miranda Fyfe, whose mom Lucy volunteers as the team mom.With nearly seven years of classes, Fyfe, 15, has earned her black belt.

Like Horn-Taylor, the tenth grader thinks Taekwondo makes her more confident and also helps her be a better swimmer for Cox High School. “It definitely helps keep me in shape and I’m really flexible because of Taekwondo, which is good for swimming too,” she said.

Students testing for the next belt spend a great deal of time preparing and not just with the techniques.“We have to come up with our own demos. It’s really cool because I get to use all the techniques I’ve learned,” said Fyfe. The next testing will be held later this month.

Oceana offers three Taekwondo classes, based on age and skill level. The youngest kids,“Tigers,”meet from 5:30 6 p.m., followed by the beginner class, normally for ages 7 and up to those who have earned an orange belt, at 6 p.m. and finally the advanced class, which includes teens and all adults, begins at 7 p.m.

According to Lucy Fyfe, 7 - 8 year olds who aren’t ready for the beginner class can stay with the 30-minute tiger class.

Children and adults from other programs are welcome to attend Oceana classes. Because all programs are run a little differently, Fyfe explained Pedigo firsts tests each new student to see exactly what their skills are.

All Taekwondo participants start by earning their white belt and work their way through yellow, orange, green, blue, brown, red and for those who stick with the classes, they work their way to the coveted black belt.

Cost for the class is a monthly fee, not a contract and participants can opt to register for a month at a time.The cost is $40 per month for one family member with discounts for additional children. The uniforms can be purchased anywhere students choose and the only additional cost is $12 per year for mandatory insurance required by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU).

For parents of kids heavily involved in school activities, the month-to-month option is welcome. “If they want to come try it out, they can try it for a month and see what they like and don’t like about it,” explained Fyfe.
