During VFA-34’s deployment the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), the squadron is honoring those killed in combat by painting their names on their jets, just below the cockpit. This F/A-18C Hornet from the “Blue Blasters,” being guided into a catapult shuttle June 13 on Lincoln’s flight deck, honors Sgt. Donald Lamar II, a Fredericksburg, Va. Marine killed May 12, 2010 in Helmand province, Afghanistan. Lamar, 23, was stationed with the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Lincoln, with embarked CVW-2, is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and combat flight operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

MWR will host “Beach Blast” at the Dam Neck Annex beach June 24.The gates open at 2 p.m. and kicks off with an extreme sports expo. Paddleboard and surf demonstrations and mini-clinics will be offered from 2:30 - 5:30 p.m. by local businesses. The Aragona Project and Audiostrobelight will provide live music starting at 5 p.m.At 7:30 p.m.,national recording artists, Bowling For Soup, will take the stage. Virginia Beach Cornhole will host a free tournament from 3 - 7 p.m. and there will also be a strongman competition from 3 5 p.m., featuring log squat and press, tire flip, tire pull, ammo can relay and gladiator push-ups.A tug-of-war competition between the top civilian team and top military team will determine overall winner. There will also be giveaways by surf and skate brand representatives. Food and beverages will be available for purchase The event concludes at 9 p.m. with fireworks over the Atlantic Ocean. Resilience helps Sailors, families navigate tough times From Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) — Navy leadership has implemented the Operational Stress Control (OSC) program to help Sailors and their families recognize and navigate stress, said Navy officials, June 18.

According to Capt. Kurt Scott, director, Navy Behavioral Health, the Navy’s goal is to help individuals identify stressors and develop the skills and tools to be resilient and handle the curveballs life may throw. Deployment work-ups, a sick child, four-section duty and marital trouble can all cause stress levels to

rise. Stress is a fact of life but resiliency helps make stress manageable. “Stress is normal and can help you excel and succeed, but there is a point when stress may impact your ability to meet life’s challenges,” said Scott. OSC defines resilience as the capacity to withstand, recover, grow, and adapt in the face of stressors
