Feds Feed Families Feds Feed Families, an annual government-wide effort, is launching at NAS Oceana and Dam Neck Annex.All DoD and active duty can help support the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia by collecting much-needed food items through Aug. 31. This year’s efforts will again be led by the staff from the NAS Oceana Chapel of the Good Shepherd and collection boxes will soon be set up at several Oceana and Dam Neck commands.

According to staff at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, in 2011, they received an outstanding response from local Navy institutions and federal employees, helping the foodbank get through the challenging summer months and due to increased demand again this summer,donations are urgently needed.

Words can hurt or heal

PAUL WIGGINTON NAS Oceana Chaplain “Sticks and stones can break my bones,but words will never hurt me.” I heard that often on the playground at school and may have even said it a few times growing up. I remember them coming from my mom and dad each time I moved into a new neighborhood; kids would talk about the funny accent of the new boy.

In time, I came to realize that words could hurt, it all depended on the person they came from.From the kids on the monkey bars or the ball team we played against, it was their way of getting into the attitude of others to help themselves look better or win. Good advice from mom just to let the other kids think what they wanted to and not let their words get to a young kid.

We have a word for it today and call it bullying.

Partly because in our day and time, the phrase,“words will never hurt me,”has been shown to be misleading.

Some of you who are reading this are waiting for the shoe to drop, so that some example of harsh words, put downs, or toxic speech may come out. I am sure you have already thought of some.

Yet the opposite of these hurtful words are those that strengthen buildup, encourage and make solid a person’s character and outlook. The Apostle Paul, writing to a young man in the faith named Timothy, penned these words of encouragement: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young,but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.” I Tim 4:12 NIV. Paul knew of the words that could tear down, and he knew their friendship could strengthen Timothy for all the challenges he had to face in life.

Research has shown that it takes seven to 10 positive interactions to overcome one negative interaction.To think about it another way, it would take only one hurtful conversation to delete 10 or more positive ones.Words can make a difference in our day-today conversation. It’s hard work to build each other up and over time, can make a huge difference.

In the words of John F Kennedy,“One person can make a difference and every person should try.” We can all make a difference with our words.

HS-11 holds change of command

BY MC3 BRIAN G. REYNOLDS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group Public Affairs USS ENTERPRISE, At Sea — Cmdr. Ryan Keys relieved Cmdr. Edgardo Moreno as commanding officer (CO) of the “Dragonslayers” of Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron (HS) 11 in an airborne change-of-command ceremony in the skies above deployed aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) July 6.

The ceremony began on the flight deck as Moreno addressed the crew of HS-11, offering his appreciation and gratitude to the squadron he had led.

“You are my family,” said Moreno. “I have nothing but love and respect for all of you.”

Moreno also expressed a deep honor for having the opportunity to lead the Dragonslayers.

“When you say ‘take care of your people,’ that’s easier

said than done,” said Moreno.“You have to do a lot to take care of your people.The first thing you have to do is lead from the front.”

Following the airborne portion of the ceremony, which included a ceremonial “lead change” carried out by Keys and Moreno, Keys took center stage and addressed the crew as the new commanding officer of HS-11.

“We will continue the Dragonslayer traditions of mission accomplishment, safe flying and mentorship,” said Keys. “Every person in this command plays a critical role on this team and must respect each other.”

Keys, the previous executive officer of HS-11, then offered his thanks to Moreno for setting a favorable leadership example for him to follow.

“Thanks Cheech, for all that you’ve done for the squadron for the past two and a half years,”said Keys.“You didn’t — See HS-11, Page 9

Truman departs Norfolk Naval Shipyard for sea trials

BURLESON USS Harry S.Truman Public Affairs USS HARRY S.TRUMAN,At Sea (NNS) — Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Harry S.Truman (CVN 75) departed Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) and began sea trails, one of the final milestones of its docking planned incremental availability (DPIA) July 7.

Sea trials tests Truman’s system capabilities in surface operations, deck seamanship, flight deck operations and damage control readiness.

“Today’s successful underway was the product of Truman and NNSY’s hard work and dedication for the past 16 months in the shipyard,” said Capt. Dee L. Mewbourne, Truman’s commanding officer.“It is absolutely fantastic to

be back at sea where we belong.”

Truman is conducting sea trials in collaboration with Norfolk Naval Shipyard to train Sailors and ensure operability of equipment and systems while at sea.

“We have completed an enormous amount of testing, but things still need to be observed,” said Cmdr. Daniel Rossler, Truman’s chief engineer. “During this underway, we must work together to accomplish all the goals needed to successfully get this ship back in the fleet.”

The goal is to reestablish the proficiency of the ship and its training teams, said Rossler.

A series of training exercises will be performed and evaluated while Sailors complete final personnel qualification standards.

Singer, who serves as Oceana’s command services attorney/staff judge advocate, demonstrated exceptional leadership as he synchronized the Navy’s restoration efforts with the city of Virginia Beach and various contractors, following the crash of an F/A-18 into the Mayfair Mews apartment complex on April 6. Singer served as a dedicated legal counselor to affected residents, making sure they all received the proper information and support services. His personal involvement with each resident was noted many times and his compassion and dedication helped signiďŹ cantly improve recovery efforts.

WASHINGTON (NNS) — When Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class Michael Farrell got the news in November 2011 that he had not been selected for retention by the Navy’s Enlisted Retention Board,he was unsure of what would come next in his life.

The one thing he did know was that he wanted to return to his home state of Minnesota if at all possible.

Farrell, assigned to Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 120“Greyhawks,� immediately began preparing for his transition out of the Navy.While taking advantage of the usual services of the Navy Transition Assistance Management Program, offered at Commander, Navy Installations Command’s Fleet and Family Readiness Centers (FFSCs) worldwide, he knew that it might not be enough to prepare him for his unexpected transition out of the Navy after more than nine years of service.

While receiving the initial news from his commanding ofďŹ cer, he was given a handbook about all of the beneďŹ ts available to him and was told the about many options, including extra outplacement services through Challenger, Grey and Christmas (CGC).As the job search continued with little luck, Farrell found himself speaking to a CGC coach to develop a job search strategy targeting Minnesota and crafting a resume that was aimed directly at his goal. “Thanks to that killer resume, I got a job in Minnesota with a company called Orbotech,â€?said Farrell.“It pays well and the job

looks to be less demanding than my Navy one.The beneďŹ ts are great and the working environment and climate are different from what I’ve been accustomed to lately.â€?

Farrell is extremely grateful that he took the extra steps to ensure a good future for himself and his family. While at a loss for what to do next, things did not look bright for Farrell.After talking to the coach at CGC and developing a plan, he began to gain conďŹ dence and see hope for his future. “I know it is the coaches’ job, but they seemed to put 100 percent of themselves into what they do and it showed,â€? said Farrell.“Things worked out right for me and it was because of their hard work and dedication.â€?

With a job secured in his home state and his extended family nearby, his outlook has changed about being selected by the ERB for release from the Navy.Farrell is proud of his naval service and the years he spent as an aviation electronics technician, but he is also looking forward to the next step in his life and ďŹ nally feeling “homeâ€? again.

(NNS) — An injured pelican, who was rescued with the help of Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic Oil Recovery employees at Naval Station Norfolk, arrived July 3 at his new home at SeaWorld Orlando.

Kermit Tapia, William Taylor and James Bragg assisted local wildlife rescue volunteers in recovering the pelican June 22.The bird had been spotted on the jetty near pier 14 weeks prior.Tapia, a deck hand who has worked for Oil Recovery for 12 years, called the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) upon noticing the bird had broken off the tip of its wing and could not fly.

“I was just glad I could help,” he said.“Those volunteers who do this on a regular basis are truly heroes to me.”

Tapia added that the SPCA Wildlife program sent a pair of volunteers, Karen Roberts and Noah Myer, who helped capture the pelican and bring him to safety.

Kordecki, who is Oceana’s quarterdeck assistant leading petty officer,is looking forward to learning more about her new role, as well as being part of CPO 360. “I expect to grow a stronger bond with fellow first classes and the chiefs’ mess through CPO 365… CPO 365 will allow me to have an opportunity to grow by asking questions of the right people, questions that I might have learned answers to later in painful lessons and trial and error situations.”

Although training support centers were born of the Revolution in Training to provide a myriad of support functions to area learning sites,there is little guesswork as to where the bulk of their energies lie with an average annual throughput of 90,000 Sailors and Marines.

Headquartered at Dam Neck Annex, Training Support Center Hampton Roads (TSCHR) handles everything from quota assignments to student check-in and check-out.

Between check-in and check-out, while the students are dutifully carrying out their training mission, there’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes by the TSCHR student management personnel. Oscar Jose, TSCHR’s student management director, rarely sees a lull in the student manage-

ment workload. For the eighth consecutive year, his personnel have provided unparalleled support at the ďŹ ve major training installations located in the Hampton Roads area of responsibility.At each of these sites, his workforce is tailored in both skills and numbers to meet the training requirements of the 30-plus Naval Education and Training Command learning sites they are charged to support. “It seems we never run out of challenges.

TTGL executes first multi-ship Ballistic Missile Defense exercise

BY LT. CMDR. ROY EVANS Tactical Training Group Atlantic “Captain,Track 1234 is a ballistic missile with an impact point in our defended area,” announces the tactical action officer (TAO) of a Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) capable U.S. Navy ship.

The ship’s Aegis combat system calculates an intercept point and firing solution. “TAO, take Track 1234,” directs the commanding officer. Within seconds, an SM-3 missile launches from the ship and a few minutes later, destroys the ballistic missile.

Based on the worldwide proliferation of ballistic missiles, U.S. Navy warships could face this exact scenario in the immediate future. For now however, this remains a fictional scenario recently played out hundreds of times in a synthetic exercise involving four U.S.Navy BMD-capable ships.

In August 2009, the White House announced the European Phased Adaptive Approach (EPAA) for Ballistic Missile Defense of the European theater. The EPAA concept is grounded on U.S. Navy Aegis technology and the first phase involves forward deploying BMD-capable ships to Europe to provide an initial layer of defense. The later phases increase BMD capability and coverage in Europe.

In order to achieve the initial phase, the inventory of BMD-capable ships on the East Coast increased, which created a corresponding demand signal for BMD training. That demand signal resulted in the recent establishment of a BMD training program located at Tactical Training Group Atlantic (TTGL) at Dam Neck Annex. A similar program already exists at Tactical Training Group Pacific in San Diego.

The Ballistic Missile Defense Exercise (BMDEX) program is designed to train and certify Ballistic Missile Defense ships prior to deployment. TTGL BMDEX training program was established in April 2012. Now that there is a program on the East Coast, the plan is to conduct a monthly BMDEX and alternate the exercise control responsibilities between the two coasts.

BMDEX events are run on a synthetic training architecture that leverages the successful fleet synthetic training (FST) program and provides realistic training to ships that are in port. Because BMDEX events run on a distributed network,East Coast ships can participate inWest Coast led events, and West Coast ships can participate in East Coast led events. The first TTGL-led BMDEX, held June 18 - 22, included two ships in Norfolk, one in San Diego and one in Pearl Harbor.The ships are connected to a Distributed Training Center where the exercise control team runs the

scenario.The connection is provided by a persistent network called the Navy Continuous Training Environment (NCTE). The Navy’s synthetic training is enabled by the Joint Semi-Automated Forces (JSAF) model, which allows programmers to develop ballistic missile scenarios and then transmit them to the ships via the NCTE network.

JSAF is the same model used during fleet synthetic training events to exercise other warfare areas such as antisubmarine warfare or surface warfare.

When the JSAF simulation arrives on the ship (located pierside) it stimulates the ship’s combat systems which have been placed into a training mode. When in a training mode, the ship can simulate being geographically located anywhere in the world, and be provided a realistic training environment. Watch teams operate their actual shipboard equipment in their combat information centers.

During BMDEX events, a ballistic missile is launched by exercise control in the distributed training center and the signal is sent to the ship via the distributed training network.The ship’s combat system then receives an indication that a missile has been launched and the combat system on board creates a radar track once the ballistic missile enters the ship’s radar range. The ship’s training system then allows watch teams to track and then engage — See Inaugural training, Page 15

This deployment will be the final deployment for any squadron embarked aboard Enterprise, as the ship is scheduled to be inactivated following its return to homeport in Norfolk. This makes the last in-flight change of command the Dragonslayers will ever conduct aboard Enterprise.

“It feels bittersweet, but I am honored to have had the opportunity to do an airborne change of command on this final historic deployment of the Big E,” said Moreno.

Moreno will go on to attend the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. With the completion of the change of command, HS-11 pilots will continue to fly combat missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.

Perry, who works for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in Arlington,Va., is now training her eighth dog. She usually starts training dogs around 8 weeks old and continues into their advanced training portion.When the dogs are ready for service, she said that it’s hard to let her trusty companions go, but the services the dogs provide to wounded veterans is a rewarding experience.

“I don’t think you can not fall in love with these pups — they trust you, they look up to you — you are the person that they trust as you train them,”she said.“…The reward is seeing how this dog helps this individual,physically and mentally;being able to give the love of a dog — a well trained dog — that gives this person a sense of security and independence.That’s the reward to me.That then makes me think,‘OK, when am I going to get my next puppy and start this again?’”

Mathews, who works at the Navy Warfare Development Command on Naval Station Norfolk,is a new puppy raiser for VMF. Her role is to socialize Chief in different environments and get him used to a variety of situations. She is also conducting basic obedience training and will teach Chief about 30 commands over a course of 12 - 18 months.

“We are learning along with him,”explained Mathews.“We are going through obedience training with him now.”

The dogs wear a special vest,or cape,while working which signifies that they are on-duty service dogs.

“When he [Chief] wears the vest, he knows he’s working,” said Mathews.“And when he doesn’t wear the vest, that means he’s not working … actually,he learned the difference very early on.”

While working, the dogs follow specific commands and look to the trainer for direction.

“There are certain behaviors that are acceptable when they are at work,and there are certain ones that are not,”explained Perry.“One of the big things that I teach, both the dog and people at work, is that he cannot respond to other people or accept pets from other people unless he is seated or in the down position.They eventually learn that they don’t get rewarded unless they are stationary or stay with their person.”

First Beast Blast draws nearly 6,800 to enjoy what MWR offers STORY/PHOTOS BY ADAN PHURTURA BRAZIER Special to the Jet Observer Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) launched its 1st annual Beach Blast on the beach at Dam Neck Annex June 24. The festivities started at 2:30 p.m. and within an hour, more than 1,800 guests were out on the beach.

“We wanted to celebrate summer and use this as an opportunity to showcase what MWR has to offer,” said MWR Director Scott George. He and the MWR staff members spent six months planning and coordinating the Beach Blast event, including setting up all the tents and sporting equipment used that day.

The day started with paddle board and surf demonstrations at 2:30 p.m.

The big crowd pleaser that afternoon was the “strongman” competition that took place at 3 p.m. “This was a trial and error situation but it turned out really well. I mean, I look over and the bleachers are filled!” said MWR Fitness Coordinator Willie Tate, one of the judges for the strongman competition.

Even though the event ran smoothly, there was a slight worry that the competition would not happen at all.

“I didn’t think that it would happen.

We started with six teams during the sign up and that was a month before we were set to have the competition.

In the end, only three teams showed,” said Tate.

Despite the slight nail biter that oc-

curred behind the scenes, the teams that did show to compete did a fantastic job. “I loved it! I had just as much fun as the participants,” said MWR Personal Fitness Trainer Lee Williams, who was also a judge for the competition.

The day continued with fun and entertainment for all ages. Music was provided out on the beach by a local radio station, numerous MWR stations had a steady supply of cool drinks for purchase and food venders filled the air with scents that summer wouldn’t be complete without. For those who wanted to enjoy a view, MWR staff set up a VIP dining area on the MWR Shifting Sands balcony which overlooked the beach and the staging area.“This is the best view for the fireworks show tonight,” said George.

At 5 p.m., the band “Aragona Project” started their performance, kicking off the live entertainment that would continue with “Audio Strobe Light” and “Bowling for Soup.”

“These bands were chosen at the family fest event we held in the spring.

We held a ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition for the local talent here in the Virginia Beach area,” said Oceana MWR Assistant Manager Vinnie Spagnuolo.

The Beach Blast event ended with a fireworks show at 9 that night. By that time, about 6,800 guests were tallied by gate security.

The tug-of-war, part of the strongman competition, was a crowd pleaser for the day. Spectators filled the surrounding bleachers to cheer on the three teams who showed up to compete.

A corn hole competition was offered during Beach Blast. Oceana MWR spent nearly six months planning and organizing Beach Blast, which was open to the public, as well as ID card holders.

The first of 1,800 guests make their way to Beach Blast in the first hour after it opened June 24 at Dam Neck Annex. Security tallied nearly 6,800 visitors by the end of the event, following the fireworks.

The approximately 7 pound, mature brown pelican has a severely injured wing and is unable to be returned to the wild.Following treatment at the Sacred Friends Wildlife Rehabilitation in Norfolk,SeaWorld Orlando is now providing the bird with a long-term home inside the parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pelican Preserve.

Upon arrival at SeaWorld Orlando,the pelican was placed in a quarantine area and will be closely monitored to make sure it is healthy before joining other rescued brown pelicans in the park. Since the parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rescue programs began, more than 20,000 animals have been rescued.

Synthetic training allows ships to receive training while in port, thus saving fuel costs of underway training. Multiple live ďŹ rings of anti-ballistic missiles are cost prohibitive, so this synthetic capability saves valuable resources while still providing realistic training. The distributed network also allows other missile defense units from other services, such as the Army and Air Force,to participate in Navy training events, thus providing a very realistic, joint training experience for the shipâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crew.The synthetic architecture is so realistic, that ships are certiďŹ ed to conduct the Ballistic Missile Defense mission in the synthetic BMDEX, vice using a live training event.

In the inaugural BMDEX at TTGL, one ship was certiďŹ ed for deployment and the other three receive basic level initial qualiďŹ cations and training.

#SAAM: Senior military oversight announced for Navy’s sexual assault cases From Department of the Navy, Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office WASHINGTON (NNS) — The Navy announced June 28 that only officers at the O-6 (captain) level and above will have the authority to make initial disposition decisions on the most serious sexual assault cases.

This announcement follows a statement from Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta, directing the services to elevate reported offenses including rape, sexual assault, forcible sodomy, and attempts to commit those offenses to a “Special Court Martial Convening Authority” at the O-6 or above paygrade.

The Navy’s implementation of the Department of Defense initiative was out-

lined in NAVADMIN 195/12, released June 28.This message defined the sexual assault initial disposition authority (SA-IDA) as officers O-6 or above.

Once a sexual assault is reported to a command with a military member named as the alleged perpetrator, Naval Criminal Investigative Service is alerted to begin an investigation. If the commander is not an SA-IDA, the case will be forwarded to the SA-IDA for an initial disposition decision.

The SA-IDA must consult with a judge advocate and,if practicable,an NCIS agent before making any determination on a case.

The SA-IDA may then take any action in accordance with the established Rules for Court-Martial, to include pursuing criminal charges, taking administrative or non-judicial action, or taking no action against the alleged perpetrator.Additionally, the SA-IDA

decision must be documented.

The NAVADMIN also directed commanders to understand the recent changes made to Article 120 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which addresses the criminal elements of rape, sexual assault, aggravated sexual contact, and abusive sexual contact. To assist commanders, members of the Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps will provide training in conjunction with mobile training teams under the oversight of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Task Force. Every commanding officer, staff judge advocate, victim advocate and sexual assault response coordinator is required to attend a session of this training.

Sexual assault prevention is an important element of the readiness area of the 21st Century Sailor and Marine initiative, which consolidates a set of objectives and policies, new and existing, to maximize Sailor and Marine personal readiness, build resiliency and hone the most combat-effective force in the history of the Department of the Navy (DoN). DoN is working aggressively to prevent sexual assaults, to support sexual assault victims, and to hold offenders accountable.

BY MC2 ANNA ARNDT Naval Medical Center Portsmouth Public Affairs The Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) Intern Class of 2011-2012 graduated 88 interns from their first year of postgraduate training, June 29.

The 88th consecutive year of the Graduate Medical Education program at NMCP, saw the program graduate one of its largest classes of interns, who are now fully licensable physicians, eligible to serve the fleet around the world.

Acting Commander Capt. James Hancock issued the ceremony’s opening remarks.“This is a great day.You all have been the top 1 percent of everything you have done in your lives,whether it’s high school, whether it’s college, or whether it’s being here at Portsmouth, because at Portsmouth you are looking at the ‘First and Finest,’” said Hancock. “Half of you graduating today will be out in the fleet tomorrow; the other half is going into training to further your education. You will take care of our wounded warriors who come back, and there’s nothing more important than that.”

speaker, Chief, Navy Medical Corps, Rear Adm. Colin Chinn, praised the class for their achievements and offered a few words of wisdom.

“I don’t know when the dream started to become a physician,” said Chinn.“It could have started when you were very young, it could have started in high school, but to get to this point, you have had to endure a lot. Four years of undergraduate college, four very grueling years at medical school, now this very difficult year they just completed in internship.

Chinn continued, “You’re about at the midpoint in the journey of becoming a physician — it’s not over yet.You still have to complete your residency training. For some of you, fellowship training.And then there’s the board certification exam. So you’re about halfway through the journey, but today is a significant point in that journey.”

Chinn acknowledged family members in their roles during the journey.“The spouses, the children, the parents, the grandparents, the siblings, the aunts and uncles — your love and support during the many years of study and training of your loved ones has been essential for this day to occur,” Chinn

said.“On behalf of the Navy and the medical community, I thank you.”

Chinn also acknowledged the teaching staff, saying they have been vital to the current and future success of graduating interns.

“Every year, you train, mentor and produce outstanding junior physicians and naval officers for the fleet, the Marine Corps and naval medical treatment facilities throughout the world,” Chinn said. “You are the reason the graduates of our Graduate Medical Education programs lead the nation in board certification examination pass rates and why our GME programs receive the highest levels of GME accreditation.”

The graduates consisted of Navy, Air Force and civilian interns.After 11 years of war, all four services have learned to work together in a combat theater and have collectively made record-breaking advancements in combat casualty care and patient movement, Chinn said.

Some graduates will begin residencies and continue their training at NMCP, while others will go to serve in various capacities around the fleet.

Naval aviator inducted into USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame From Chief of Naval Air Training Public Affairs SAN JOSE, Calif. (NNS) — A naval officer was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame, during a ceremony and luncheon as part of the USA Gymnastics National Congress and Trade Show in San Jose, Calif., June 30.

Cmdr. Mark Calderon, now the requirements officer for the Chief of Naval Air Training, represented the United States at four World Championships from 1980 to 1986 and won the 1982 World Synchronized Trampoline title with Stuart Ransom.

He was serving in the U.S. Navy when he qualified for the U.S.Trampoline Team for a fourth time in 1986.

“I always appreciated the fact that I was allowed by the Navy to pursue qualifying for the U.S. team back in 1986,” said Calderon.“They gave me time off to train and even paid for some of the travel expenses,all while I was a third class petty officer.”

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from

the University of Texas at Austin and was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy in August 1992. He received his wings of gold and was designated a naval aviator in September 1995, and has flown the P-3 Orion. He went on to be an instructor pilot in both the P-3 and the training aircraft T-44.

“If he brought half as much dedication to gymnastics as he has brought to his jobs in the Navy, it does not surprise me that he was the best in the world,” said Chief of Naval Air Training Rear Adm. William Sizemore.“He is a superb naval officer and a great example of the type of talented people we have serving in the United States Navy.”

From South Texas, Calderon has been using his celebrity to inspire local children and encourage them to focus and work hard. He spoke to several classrooms this spring about his experiences and in April, Calderon threw out the first pitch at Whataburger Field for the “Hooks,” Corpus Christi’s minor league baseball team.

Annapolis, War of 1812 Commemorative Walking Tour opens to public The self-guided walking tour throughout Annapolis consists of 10 stops of historical significance to the War of 1812 and will be available through October 2014.

From U.S. Naval Academy Public Affairs ANNAPOLIS, Md. (NNS) — The Annapolis War of 1812 200th anniversary commemorative walking tour opened July 6 with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the U.S. Naval Academy.

U.S. Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Michael Miller, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley and Annapolis Mayor Joshua Cohen cut the ceremonial ribbon at Mahan Hall on the Naval Academy Yard.

During the ceremony, Miller explained why the city of Annapolis should remember the War of 1812, and its significance to the Naval Academy.

“The War of 1812 was truly our first nautical war, and

rightly called our nation’s second war for independence.

It was foundational to the naval preeminence we enjoy today and set the stage for what would become the United States Naval Academy.”

The self-guided walking tour throughout Annapolis consists of 10 stops of historical significance to the War of 1812 and will be available through October 2014.

The tour includes five stops at the Naval Academy — Mahan Hall, the HMS Macedonian Monument, the Naval Academy Museum, the Joseph Nicholson Home and Bandstand, and the HMS Confiance Cannon.

“Some of the artifacts in this walking tour include flags of tremendous significance to our naval heritage, such as the colors from the British frigate HMS Guirrere, defeated by the smaller, yet quicker, USS Constitution on Aug. 19, 1812 under the command of Capt. Isaac Hull, and perhaps the most famous of all Naval flags, Captain Oliver Hazard Perry’s ‘Don’t give up the ship’ flag flown in our victory in the Battle of Lake Erie on Sept. 10, 1813,” Miller added.

Miller concluded his speech by recognizing those who have helped with the project.

“I’d like to recognize our strong partnership with the

State of Maryland, City of Annapolis and all participant groups,” said Miller,“and to donors and supporters Mr.William I. Koch,Watermark Tours, the Naval History and Heritage Command, and our team here at USNA.” Beginning April 1, 2013, the tour will also feature an exhibit in Mahan Hall entitled “Seas, Lakes & Bay:The Naval War of 1812.” This exhibit will feature artifacts from the War of 1812 and will be open to the public, free of charge, from Monday through Saturday, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and Sunday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. through Nov. 3, 2013.

This walking tour and exhibition are made possible by Koch, whose support and loan of his collection of historic maritime paintings and artifacts provide a glimpse into life on the seas during the War of 1812.

Copies of the walking tour map are available at the academy’s Visitor Center, the Naval Academy Museum, the Maryland State House, the Historic Annapolis Foundation on Main Street and the Annapolis Visitor Center.

This is specifically for second class petty officers in supervisory positions. It provides information on Navy and community resources available to military personnel.

Through solution-focused exercises, participants learn techniques that effectively address personnel concerns brought to their attention.

SAPR ADVOCATE/POC BASIC TRAINING July 17 - 20, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This basic training prepares command SAPR personnel to coordinate training for the crew, fulfill reporting requirements, assist victims, and manage the advocate program. Command-appointed SAPR points of

contact and SAPR advocates, approved by the command, who are at least 21 years of age and want to assist victims of sexual assault, should attend.

PARENTING IN A MILITARY FAMILY July 18 - 19, 9 11:30 a.m.

This workshop explores what it means to discipline children and the ways it can be accomplished most effectively. It includes strategies for encouraging children to behave appropriately, communicating in ways that really work, and increasing cooperation. Participants discuss attention-seeking behaviors and how parents can best respond to them.Additional topics include child development, temperament, expecting and giving respect, and the impact that a military lifestyle has on children.

VA DISABILITY BENEFITS REVIEW July 19, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This workshop teaches participants how to review service medical records and identify medical conditions that may lead to a compensable disability rating with the Veterans Administration (VA); request vocational rehabilitation benefits and training; and complete their VA application for submission. Service members must be within 75 days to six months of separation to attend. Participants should bring their medical records, copies of their medical records and if applicable, copies of their marriage certificate, children’s birth certificates, family members’ social security numbers, and divorce decree or death certificate.

During World War II, Loving flew the Mustang and Spitfire with the 31st Fighter Group. He flew 151 combat missions over Italy, Southern France, Germany, Czechoslovakia and other occupied countries of Eastern Europe.
