With the theme, “Our Flag was Still There,” the 2012 Oceana Air Show celebrated “red, white and blue,” with fantastic flying by military and civilian pilots, along with a traditional flag passing ceremony. There were also static displays, family activities, vendor displays and plenty of food to keep the thousands of visitors from Hampton Roads and beyond happy for three days. The weekend began with the Twilight Show on Friday, Sept. 14 and continued on Sept.

15 - 16 with aerial performances by the Blue Angels, the Black Diamond Jet Team, Bill Leff, Bill Braack with his JetCar, an Air Power Demo by VFA-34, VFA-81 and VFA-106, the U.S. Navy Tailhook Legacy Flight, the Air Force Heritage Flight and more.

Golf tournament to benefit NMCRS St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church will sponsor the 11th annual charity golf tournament on Oct. 2 at NAS Oceana Aeropines Golf Club on the Hornet Course.

The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society will be one of four of the charitable recipients this year, along with the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad, Toby’s Dream Foundation and International Orthodox Christian Charities.

The golf outing has raised more than $50,000 for charities since its beginning.

The event begins at 12:30 p.m.with registration and 1:30 shotgun start and concludes with a 6:30 p.m. awards dinner at the church. Tournament format will be four-player team, captain’s choice.

Entry fee is $125 per player; $500 per team and includes 18 holes of golf, range balls, team photo, gifts and prizes, lunch, cold beverages and awards. Active and retired military discounts available.

Budget for Baby class The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) offers its Budget for Baby class to all Navy and Marine Corps personnel who are expecting a child. The Oceana office offers this class typically the second and fourth Wednesday of each month.

Chili Cook-off coming to Dam Neck Annex It’s time to get your command team together for the annual Fleet Week Chili Cook-off, taking place this year at Dam Neck Annex. Some of the best chili on the East Coast will be cooked up during a friendly competition, Oct. 13, 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the Dam Neck Annex Fairwinds Softball Field 1.

The new venue offers a roomy location for the chili teams and a picnic area for visitors to sit and enjoy the chili.

Each team will receive a voucher from Farm Fresh to purchase all needed ingredients. Awards for best tasting, most original, showmanship and big dipper (most samples sold) will earn the top teams cash prizes for their command’s MWR fund.

The 10 percent

BY CMDR. VINSON MILLER NAS Oceana Command Chaplain Recently, the Navy Exchange here at NAS Oceana was honored as the top exchange worldwide. Pretty awesome!

It wasn’t the sales numbers; it was the customer service element that put it over the top.

There are times when an organization, a command, a work section and individual personnel are acknowledged for the impact of what they’ve done.There are probably far more times when someone does their job and does it well, and there is no thanks given.And yet...

Among the ways of leading by example perhaps the most underused skill is that of simple gratitude. Appreciation.

One of my primary sources for how I choose to live a spiritual life, in my morals and ethics, is in reading the gospels. Not only because they are “scripture” to me,but because of the principles I find therein for the whole of my life.

There is a particular story (Luke 17:11-19) of a time when 10 men approached Jesus. All suffered from a pretty horrific disease that caused such fear that none dared to go near them, much less touch them. They cried out to Jesus, who pronounced them healed. Off they ran to show themselves to a priest and be given a clean bill of health, and therefore able to rejoin society. But one turned around and ran back to Jesus, falling at his feet in thanks.As the other nine ran on, Jesus noted the real character trait in this one man’s life: gratitude.

I’ve thought much about this story over the years and how in life it is often just one out of 10 who do express gratitude.

Just 10 percent.

We and others can do the “right thing” and yet the accolades may not be forthcoming. Instead, we experience the 90 percent; the other nine who get what they want and run off without even a shout out over their shoulder. In truth, we really don’t sign up to get kudos.The job done right has its own reward. We do what we are supposed to do. So why should we expect anything to be said?

Navy adjusts Selective Reenlistment Bonus plan to retain skilled Sailors SRB rewards Sailors who attain special training in skills most needed in the fleet, and helps meet critical skill reenlistment benchmarks and enhance Navy’s ability to size, shape and stabilize manning. Award levels are strategically adjusted as reenlistment requirements for specific ratings and skill sets are met.

From Chief of Naval Personnel Public Affairs WASHINGTON (NNS) — The Navy announced updates to the Selective Reenlistment Bonus award plan, Sept. 8, in NAVADMIN 273/12.

The intent of the Selective Reenlistment Bonus (SRB) is to incentivize Sailors with critical skills and experience to stay Navy. SRB rewards Sailors who attain special training in skills most needed in the fleet, and helps meet critical skill reenlistment benchmarks and enhance Navy’s ability to size, shape and stabilize manning.

Award levels are strategically adjusted as reenlistment requirements for specific ratings and skill sets are met.

From the 100 skill/zone combinations detailed in NAVADMIN 143/12, this update includes reductions for three skills, one skill elimination, 10 skills award level increases and 11 skills added to the list.

“The SRB program provides a retention incentive to our top-performing Sailors with critical

skills needed in the fleet,” said Rear Adm.Tony Kurta, director, military personnel plans and policy.“We will continue to monitor our bonus programs to maximize retention behavior in our most critical skills within the constraints of our budget.”

Sailors should consult NAVADMIN 273/12 to determine their SRB eligibility and award level.

The increased award levels are effective immediately and decreased levels are effective 30 days from the release of the NAVADMIN. This update also announces the upcoming change to annual SRB installment payments from October to the anniversary month of reenlistment date. This policy change will take effect for all Sailors reenlisting for SRB on, or after, Oct. 1, 2012. For example, Sailors reenlisting in December 2012 will receive their initial SRB payment upon reenlistment, and all subsequent installment payments annually in December until the full bonus amount has been reached. Sailors under current SRB contracts, as well as those reenlisting prior to Oct. 1, 2012, will continue to receive anniversary payments

annually in October until the full bonus amount has been reached.

Additionally, NAVADMIN 273/12 temporarily lifts the restriction preventing Sailors with FY13 end of active obligated service (EAOS) dates from reenlisting for SRB in FY12.With this change, all FY13 EAOS Sailors, regardless of SRB tier, are encouraged to apply for SRB and reenlist on, or before, Sept. 30, 2012. Sailors electing this temporary early reenlistment option must be otherwise eligible for SRB and have a valid PTS quota prior to their selected reenlistment date.

As with Perform to Serve (PTS), eligible Sailors desiring SRB reenlistment are encouraged to work with their command career counselors, command master chiefs, and chain of command to discuss timing of reenlistment and procedures well before their EAOS. Sailors can read the complete list of SRB award levels and policy at http://www.public. navy.mil/bupers-npc/career/enlistedcareeradmin/pages/srb.aspx.

The chaplains at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana held their annual volunteer appreciation dinner at the Shifting Sands Club on Dam Neck Annex Sept. 6.The Religious Ministries Department puts together this dinner every year to honor the volunteers of the chapels on NAS Oceana and Dam Neck as a way to show thanks for the time, effort and endless support.

More than 200 volunteers participate in special events, Bible studies and even church services, volunteering for anywhere from a few hours every year to helping out on a weekly basis. The volunteers range from active duty service members as young as 19, to members who have been a part of the church community for many years. The volunteers feel that the work

that they do is more than just simply volunteering.

“Ultimately, my main career is serving God. That is my life. Coming here, finding ministry and anything that I can do for God, that’s my goal in life.”said Intelligence Specialist Seaman Josh Osborne, a Reservist who is currently attending “A” school at the Navy and Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center on Dam Neck.

The chaplains believe the appreciation dinner is a personable way to honor the volunteers. Awards of appreciation were presented to each volunteer to recognize his/her services for programs and events held by the chapel.

“These people are the backbone of our community because of their continuity.

Chaplains turn over but these people are the continuity that keeps this program going. They’re a family, that’s what it comes down to. It’s a privilege for us as chaplains to be a part of that family,”said NAS Oceana Chaplain Lt. Cmdr Paul Greer.

The dinner concluded after a special ceremonial cake cutting and a brief closing speech.

SAILORS WALK OUT OF DARKNESS TO PREVENT SUICIDE STORY/PHOTO BY MC1 PHIL BEAUFORT U.S. Fleet Forces Command Public Affairs Sailors from more than 20 Virginia commands participated in the largest suicide prevention walk in the nation during the Seventh Annual Out of Darkness walk in Virginia Beach Sept. 8.

So far, in calendar year 2012, the Navy had lost 44 Sailors to suicide.

Fleet Master Chief and Prospective Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Michael Stevens, the Navy’s senior enlisted advisor, served as the event’s guest speaker and addressed a crowd of more than 4,000 people.

“Suicide does not discriminate by gender, rank or age. It is an equal opportunity killer,” said Stevens. “But I believe there truly is hope.There was a time when many Sailors believed that admitting to or seeking treatment for a mental illness would negatively impact our careers. Events like the Walk Out of Darkness help tear down that misconception and bring needed awareness to the subject of suicide and the

treatment of depression.”

The community walks are held throughout the country to raise awareness and to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the leading national notfor-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide, through research, education and advocacy. For the second year in a row, the Hampton Roads event had the largest turnout out of the 250 events held nationally.

Louanne Ellingson, a retired chief petty officer, spoke to the crowd about the loss of her husband,a master chief petty officer.

She said that admitting there was a problem was not an option for him.

“He would never allow another human being to know that there was something wrong with him,” said Ellingson.“He didn’t want the stigma attached to him. But there is no mind-over-matter when it comes to depression. If he understood that depression is a treatable illness, I know he would be here today.”

VFA-87 Sailors earn F/A-18 ride

ANDREW WYRICK VFA-87 Public Affairs Officer Maintenance professionals are the lifeblood of naval aviation.They give their heart and soul — day in and day out — to provide safe, fully mission capable aircraft to the pilots who fly them to safeguard the country and way of life. However, most of these men and women will never know what it’s like to fly in the aircraft that they devote themselves to maintaining.

In July, Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 87 rewarded its three Sailors Of The Year with an incentive backseat ride in the F/A-18 to show appreciation for their hard work and dedication during the past year.

Chief Aviation Structural Mechanic (Equipment) Michael Patterson, the command’s Sailor of the Year, who was a chief select at the time of his flight; Aviation Electrician 3rd Class Elizabeth Jackson, the command’s Plane Captain of the Year; and Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class Robert Gelbart, the command’s Junior Sailor of the Year; each donned their flight gear and climbed in the back of an F/A-18D, on loan from VFA-106, where they had the opportunity to experience some of the missions that War Party pilots fly in the local area.

Patterson has been in VFA-87 since September 2009 and has been the leading petty officer of the line division since June 2011. He is a stellar Sailor with an outstanding work ethic and excellent military bearing. He flew with

the command’s maintenance officer, Lt. Cmdr.Will Mathis.

Gelbart joined VFA-87 in November 2008, where he was assigned to the avionics division. At the time of his selection, he was a third class petty officer. His hard work recently paid off with his promotion to second class. Gelbart flew with the command’s safety officer, Lt. Cmdr. Ben Walborn.

Jackson joined VFA-87 in September 2009 and has been in the line division since September 2010. She earned her plane captain qualification on Jan. 25, 2011 and has since set the standard for her peers to follow. She flew with the command’s administrative officer, Lt. Cmdr. Barrett Smith.

Their flights allowed them a glimpse at the different missions F/A-18 pilots fly every day.They flew to the Navy Dare Target Complex in North Carolina, where they simulated ordnance delivery in a high threat environment, while executing low altitude ingresses to a dynamic “pop” delivery. They then flew to the working areas offshore where they executed a series high “G” maneuvers simulating air-to-air combat. And they each had the opportunity to fly faster than the speed of sound.

“These Sailors work extremely hard every day to keep our jets flying so that our pilots can continue to fine tune their skills as we prepare for our next combat deployment,”said Cmdr. Scott Troyer,VFA-87 commanding officer.

“Allowing them a flight in the aircraft that they devote their lives to maintaining is just a small way for the Navy and myself to say ‘thank you.’”

The 2012 Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana Air Show was all about great performances from military teams such as the BlueAngels and the“Gladiators”of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 106, and civilians like John Mohr with his Stearman and Roger Buis piloting Otto the Helicopter. But this year’s show also offered the public the opportunity to celebrate the flag and patriotism while witnessing a unique military tradition.

The theme of the annual air show was“Our Flag was Still There,” and is one of many Navy events around the country commemorating the bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the writing of the “Star Spangled Banner” by Francis Scott Key. “For the air show,we were looking for something a little more red, white and blue that appealed to the public and the “Star Spangled Banner” is something that everybody knows the words to.We decided to focus on that one particular part,‘our flag was still there,’” explained Oceana Air Show Director Richard“Corky”Erie.

“We really wanted to show our visitors something they will never forget and we did that with the flag passing,” explained Erie.

On both days, before the Blue Angels finale, five Sailors took to the stage at show center as Chief Legalman (AW/ SW) Melissa Adams from Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic recited“Old Glory.”The flag was then presented to a veteran in attendance.

During Saturday’s show,the honored veteran was retired Navy Capt. Bill “Peanut” Gortney, father of new U.S. Fleet Forces Commander Adm.William Gortney.

“I was surprised.It was very nice.It was certainly a wonderful thing for them to do,” said Capt.Gortney.

The 88-year-old began his military career in 1942 as an aviation cadet and was commissioned as an ensign in 1944, serving until his retirement in 1970. During flight school, he learned to fly in the Stearman, much like the one flown

by John Mohr during this year’s Oceana Air Show. Gortney also flew the F4F and F6F during his early naval career. His first visit to NAS Oceana was in 1945, where he flew into the base, which Gortney described as “everything was tarpaper shacks,really temporary buildings.”

Gortney also saw the Blue Angels’ very first public performance in 1946.“This is the best one I’ve ever seen and I live near Jacksonville [Fla.],” said Gortney about this year’s air show.

Sunday’s flag passing ceremony honored the Montford Point Marines andTuskegeeAirmen,whose representatives were introduced to the crowd.The ceremony concluded with the flag being presented to Sgt. Harry Quinton, one of two of the original documented Tuskegee Airman in at-

tendance.

Impressed by a Montford M served during World War II, Haargrove made up his mind to join the Marine Corps. He jokeed that any time he regretted ged by fellow Marines to stay that decision he was encourag in.

“I’m proud to have served 30 3 years in the Marine Corps,” said Hargrove, who served frrom 1948 to 1978, which included tours in Korea and Viettnam.

There are not many more recognizable symbols of pang portrayed by Steve Myott, triotism than Uncle Sam bein who walks the show in his traademark stilts and a traditional Uncle Sam costume.

To Myott,“Our Flag was StilllThere,” represents theAmerican spirit. During a battle if tthe person carrying the flag meone else would pick up that fell,Myott explained how som

flag, so that it wouldn’t lay on the ground and they moved forward in battle.“That’s what our history is about.When we’re facing challenges where we’re being brought down, we’re still looking to rise back up,and keep going,” he said.

“To me,it’s just so important to appreciate what we have and not take it for granted,” he added.

He said it’s that patriotism and spirit that keeps him representing the icon for about 10 - 12 shows every year.

During the Oceana Air Show, Myott gave out small flags to children and also made special presentations of larger flags to the teenagers who sang the national anthem.

SarahYaden,16,was one of those singers.With her father, Cmdr. Steven Yaden, on his second tour in Kabul,Afghanistan,singing the national anthem during Sunday’sAir Show was a very emotional event for the talented teen.Yaden got her start in musical theater and enjoys singing opera.“I’ve always sung it but it means a lot more now with my dad over there,” said the Grassfield High School junior.

Yaden, in her third year at the Governors School for the Arts, can’t remember a time she wasn’t singing.Although Yaden has performed the “Star Spangled Banner,” at other events, Sunday’s air show was the largest audience she has sung for and she admitted to being nervous beforehand.

“This young lady was just the right pick to sing the words to the song that captures the spirit that her father is currently fighting for overseas,” said Erie.

As NAS Oceana’s commanding officer praised this year’s lineup of performers, he singled out one team for special recognition during Sunday’s early morning briefing. Rich Gibson with Rich’s Incredible Pyro, has been an integral part of the Ocean air show for many years, with his signature wall of fire behind the demos that has caused audiences to“feel the heat.”

But Gibson and his wife, Dee, have chosen to end their air show career at the end of this season.“The Navy has truly treated me like family. Saying goodbye to the Navy is truly the hardest part of this job,” said Gibson as he thanked Oceana personnel and other performers Sunday morning.

While Geis said there are always ways to improve the air show,“I think we have great formulas that we can change slightly to make it a fresh show for next year but I don’t think there are any major changes for next year.We’ve gotten to the point now, we think, where everyone knows where they’re supposed to be…The processes are perfected so much now that we might make minor modifications but not sure we need to make any major changes.”

As he thinks ahead to the 2013 show, Erie admits there will be some challenges, including replacing Rich’s Incredible Pyro,whom Erie describes as“the best in the business.”

“We’ve got a lot of great lessons learned for next year,” said Erie, who joked there’s one thing he can’t do better next year. “I’ve already told the commanding officer I won’t be able to top that flag passing ceremony.”

This year’s Fleet Flyby included aircraft from the “Sunliners” of VFA-81, the “Blue Blasters” of VFA-34 and the “Gladiators” of VFA-106.

How do we look the other person in the eye and meaningfully say thank you for the work, assistance, service that they have rendered, or pass along the “good word” on someone’s good work?

Ten percent or 90 percent. We are in one category or the other as to our behavior.Which do we want to define us by our response to the work of others as their senior, their peer,their junior,their spouse,their child,their friend, their customer... whether we wear the uniform or not? It’s up to us.

“I was at this event last year for the first time. I saw a mother and her young daughter placing a photo on the wall of remembrance.

It became abundantly clear to me why we have to do everything in our power to reach out to people and prevent the loss of life and the devastation it leaves in its wake,” said Metheny. “In order to do that we need everyone’s help. We need to break the stigma associated with mental health and get our Sailors the medical treatment they need and deserve.”

U.S. Fleet Forces Command (USFF) participated in volunteer positions for the first time this year and assumed about 25 percent of the responsibilities for organizing the event.

“This is the first year that the Navy has had a real, organized presence at this type

of event, and I am overwhelmed with the response we had from Navy commands and senior leadership,” said Jennifer Dolehite, USFF suicide prevention program manager.

USFF suicide prevention coordinators have assembled in collaboration with Defense Commissaries aboard Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Naval Air Station Oceana, Naval Station Norfolk and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Portsmouth to distribute more than 9,000 brochures to help publicize the symptoms for depression and the warning signs of suicide with service members and their families.

“Just the presence in our community Saturday, will raise awareness of the disease of depression to prevent the tragedy of another suicide. We want our Sailors, our shipmates, to know life is worth living,” said Dolehite.

“We do not want another command to experience a death by suicide.We all can make a difference.”

BY CATHY HEIMER Jet Observer The military career of Marine Corps pilot Capt. John Hecker began on a fateful day in U.S. history.

“I got a call at 10 a.m. on Sept. 11, and they said, ‘hey, you’re in.’ It was a really great day for me but it was also a very bad day for the country,” explained Hecker, who is one of three pilots for the Blue Angels’ C-130, known as “Fat Albert.”

Hecker was among members of the U.S. Navy’s Flight Demonstration Team who shared their experiences with Hampton Roads media on Sept. 14, prior to the start of the 2012 NAS Oceana Air Show.

But growing up, Hecker had absolutely no desire to join the military. His dad was a West Point graduate and his older brother followed in those West Point footsteps. But determined to “run the other way,” Hecker chose Auburn University. “I tried to run away from my father!” he laughed about

his self-described rebellious teen years.

Born in New Orleans, he described life as “travelling everywhere — Germany, New Mexico, Washington D.C. , Alabama,” as part of his father’s 28 years of service.

“This is what we do. We’re serving the country because it’s an honor,”Hecker said about his family’s military service.

Hecker lost his brother, Maj. William Hecker III, who served in the Army artillery for 16 years until his death in Iraq in 2006.“I’m sure he would be proud of what I’m doing,” he said about his brother.

After graduating in 1997 from Auburn, he put his bachelor’s degree in mass communications to good use at a job with TV station CBS42 in Birmingham, Ala. But while at the station, he visited several friends going through flight school and he loved what he saw. So at age 29, Hecker made a life-changing decision and applied to officer candidate school (OCS) to join the Marine Corps. And it was on Sept. 11, 2001 that he found out he was accepted.

After OCS and completing The Basic School, Hecker went off to flight training at NAS Pensacola, Fla. and Corpus Christi, Texas. He earned his wings of gold in 2004.

His aviation career started at age 30, and it’s something he wished he had begun at 18.“It’s unbelievable. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done and I had a great job before.

The Marine Corps is an even better job and they let me fly and that just topped it off,” he said.

most something that didn’t happen. In flight school, Hecker’s initial choice was jets and he had the grades for jets. But when he selected his aircraft, there was just one jet slot open and one person ahead of him,“so I got the C-130s.”As soon as he got to the fleet, Hecker realized how good that choice was.

Young but highly motived: Blue Angels maintainer shares his advice

It takes maintainers such as Aviation Machinist’s Mate Petty Officer 2nd Class (AW) Carlos Hernandez to keep those jets in the air.As a member of the Blue Angels Power Plants crew, Hernandez has been a part of the Blue Angel squadron for more than a year.

Even with the Blue Angels’ demand for the highest of excellence from their members,Hernandez felt that there is one other requirement that a member should possess. “Just be yourself. They look for people who are themselves and are also hard workers,” he explained.

Originally from Fort Worth, Texas, he

started his Navy career at the age of 17.

With a background in auto mechanics, he felt that the aviation machinist’s mate rating would suit him the best.“I knew that when I enlisted, I wanted to do something mechanically. Jets interested me so I said, ‘Okay, I’ll be a jet mechanic,’” said Hernandez, now 22.

He served his first four years of enlistment at NAS Lemoore in Calif. with the “Stingers”of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 113. After doing three deployments with them, he applied for a position with the Blue Angels. He explained that he wanted to do something different from “normal Navy” for his second tour. Being career-oriented is what motivated him through the application process but now he’s found something more to keep him going dayto-day. “The most rewarding factor, when going to different show sites, is seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces.” said Hernandez.

The Blue Angels support team is comprised of approximately 100 enlisted Sailors and Marines and all applicants come recommended for the Blue Angels by their commanding officer, according to the team’s web site. Those who are selected volunteer for a three-year tour with the squadron. After an extensive screening process,applicants who are chosen ensure that the squadron continues to maintain its tradition of excellence and directly reflects the professionalism of today’s Sailor and Marines.

The Blue Angels engaged and encouraged approximately 500 Junior Reserve OfďŹ cer Training Corps (JROTC) cadets and students from Granby, Lake Taylor, Booker T. plause when he asked how many of the students would be attending the festivities at NAS Oceana. He then gave the students some insight into how he became a pilot and some of the obstacles he had to overcome. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I ďŹ rst began ďŹ&#x201A;ying, I used to always get motion sickness. It got so bad that I tried to ďŹ nd ways to control it,â&#x20AC;? he said.â&#x20AC;&#x153;I got a little concerned because I started to see my dream slipping through my ďŹ ngers.â&#x20AC;?

Hiltz, who stands at 6â&#x20AC;&#x2122;5â&#x20AC;? tall, knew he wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t too tall to be a pilot, and he knew that his air sickness wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get in the way of his dream either. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It got frustrating, but I never quit. I was determined to overcome it and eventually I did,â&#x20AC;? he said.

That tenacity and determination helped Hiltz catapult to success and he is now the number two pilot on the team.

Fat Albert pilot: Growing up, had no intention of serving in the military

Following the performance of the Blue Angels at Saturday’s air show, Sailors at the Fuels Division of the Regional Supply Office at Oceana begin refueling the team’s F/A-18 Hornets.

Fuels Division vital to NAS Oceana Air Show’s success

BY CATHY HEIMER Jet Observer With 200,167 total gallons of JP-5 fuel issued during last weekend’s NAS Oceana Air Show, it’s safe to say the show could not go on without the work of the Fuels Division at the Regional Supply Office (RSO) at Oceana.

While that vital role played by the Fuels Division was mostly invisible to the public, 14 active duty Sailors were split between two shifts, from 6:30 a.m. to after the show’s finale, and then again in the evening, to prepare both military and civilian aircraft for the next day’s performances.

Their jobs ranged from refueling all the aircraft to quality assurance on both the JP-5 and the smoke oils.

“Without clean clear and bright jet fuel or required engine and smoke oils, none of the air demonstrations would be possible,” explained Senior Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate – Fuels (ABF) (AW/SW) Damian Lazarus, fuels and oils coordinator at Oceana Fuel must be certified as clean, clear and bright fuel, Lazarus said, because it ensures the fuels are free of sediment and water that can clog fuel lines or water that can cause the fuel lines to freeze at high altitudes.

One of those Sailors was ABF2(AW) Matthew Fox, whose job it was to ensure the day tanks or ready service tanks were prepared each day and the system was ready

for each refueling evolution. Other Sailors were responsible for quality assurance and fuels were issued on time to make sure that every performance went according to the show’s scheduled timeline.

Their duties also included issuing 37 U.S. barrels or 1,850 gallons of smoke oil, which is issued by some performers to enhance the aircraft’s performance. Lazarus, who is working at his fourth air show at Oceana, explained the work leading into the air show started more than 100 days before the show with the procurement of smoke oil aviation gasoline and other jet fuels and oils, used by most of the air demo.

Also needed were the low lead and low sulphur fuels, provided to Oceana by Shirley Gunn, Gail Adams, Sam Adams and Joseph “Robert” Reagan from the fuels desk out of Georgia.

“They provided us with awesome service and support,” said Lazarus.

Although he was waiting for the final tally, Lazarus estimates the average amount of JP-5 over the three days issued per aircraft was 1,800 gallons.

ABF2(AW) Henry Flowers, one the key players refueling the Navy’s Flight Demonstration Team, the Blue Angels, said he was happy to be one of the volunteers that provided fuel support during this year’s show.

Flowers is already looking forward to next year’s NAS Oceana Air Show.

BARK IN THE PARK Oct. 7, noon to 5 p.m.

Bi-Planes and tri-planes will take the skies over Virginia Beach this weekend as the Military Aviation Museum hosts their annual World War I Air Show. Many of the museum’s World War I aircraft will fly throughout the weekend.Watch Nieuports and others chase Fokker DR.1s and Fokker DVIIs across the sky. Friends of the museum also bring their personal aircraft to fly in the show.

Hot air balloons will also join the show, as they were used as observation and communication posts along the Western Front. Experience riding in one of the aircraft during the show.Airplane rides will be available for a fee and reservations are requested.

Each year, men and women passionate about bringing the era back to life join the air show and set up camp near the runway.Talk to them and learn what life was like fighting in the “War to End All Wars.” Hear the stories, touch the uniforms, and gain some understanding into what the men and women fighting overseas endured.
