Navy birthday celebrations at Oceana During the Navy’s birthday week, Oct. 9 - 13, Navy installations are hosting several events to celebrate. NAS Oceana will have a bell-ringing ceremony on Oct. 12. Everyone is invited to muster at the Oceana galley at 8:45 a.m., with a bell ringing over the Emergency Management Center’s “giant voice” followed by a reading of the CNO’s birthday message and cake cutting. The bell ringing will be conducted at Dam Neck over the giant voice, as well.

The Dam Neck Annex Galley will celebrate the Navy’s birthday with a special luncheon Oct. 12, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

How to fight for joy

RICHARD SMOTHERS Carrier Air Wing 3 Chaplain “I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me.You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.I know how to be brought low,and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:10-13 ESV) Sometime around A.D. 61, the Apostle Paul wrote these words from a Roman prison cell to his fellowChristians in the city of Philippi, located in northeastern Macedonia. Philippi was known in the first century world as the site where the Roman civil war ended (at least in a military sense) in 42 B.C.when Octavian (later known as Augustus Caesar) and Mark Antony defeated the army under Brutus and Cassius; thus avenging the assassination of Julius Caesar, effectively ending the Republic, and ushering in the Roman Empire.

Paul the Christian tentmaker, as an ethnic Jew and a Roman citizen, knew what it was like to live in a world marked by religious pluralism, political and military despotism, and rapidly developing cultural dynamism — a world in some ways, much like our own. It is really refreshing to hear Paul share with his friends his “secret” of success. I pray that the truths Paul learned and shared can be for you and those you love a powerful weapon in the fight for lasting joy.

First of all, Paul says that the well-spring of his joy was in the Lord — not his friends. How many times have we looked for encouragement and comfort from others first and only went to our creator as some kind of “last resort?” Of course, people that respect and love us are a great blessing — but a blessing designed to be recognized as a gift from God, not a substitute for God. Secondly, Paul takes the time to thank his friends for their love,even though they were unable to act on their love (“You had no opportunity”).By acknowledging his friends’ desire to help him, Paul ensures that his friends aren’t paralyzed by unnecessary guilt and frees his own — See Apostle Paul, Page 14

Stennis Strike Group maintains proficiency From John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group Public Affairs SOUTH CHINA SEA (NNS) — USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), which deployed from its homeport of Bremerton, Wash. in July, performed routine aircraft launch and recovery operations in cooperation with other U.S. ships in its strike group in order to maintain operational readiness.

“Flight operations are a dangerous job,but we’re making it as safe as possible,” said Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Equipment) Kelsey Deer, Fuels Division’s leading chief petty officer aboard Stennis.“Right now we’re doing normal flight training. It’s about recertifying and qualifying people to launch aircraft off of the carrier deck.”

Father, daughter serving together aboard Truman

BY MCSN TAYLOR M. DIMARTINO USS Harry S.Truman (CVN 75) Public Affairs ATLANTIC OCEAN — It is difficult for Sailors to leave their loved ones behind when it comes time to deploy.

Wives kiss their husbands farewell, and children are reminded that their parent’s absence is a sacrifice made for the greater good.

This hard truth of naval service was one that Gunner’s Mate (GM) 3rd Class Breanna Janssen, assigned to the weapons department’s G-2 division aboard the aircraft carrier USS Harry S.Truman (CVN 75), faced each time her father was called away for duty throughout her childhood.

As Janssen prepares for her first deployment aboard Truman, goodbyes won’t be required. In a rare occurrence, Janssen and her father are serving aboardTruman together.

“It feels great to be on the same ship as my daughter,” said Senior Chief Aviation Machinist’s Mate (AD) (AW/SW) David Janssen, leading chief petty officer of maintenance control for the “Seahawks” of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 126, who recently embarked aboard Truman.

“I just came off of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) and joined VAW-126, when I realized they were attached to Truman. I thought it would be a great opportunity for us to serve together for the first time in our careers,” said the senior chief.

While the Navy often allows siblings to serve together, ADCS Janssen said a father-daughter relationship aboard a warship is rare and offers unique benefits to both Sailors.

Fire safety officials urge everyone to develop a fire escape plan Home fires can happen at any time and spread in just minutes, claiming the lives and property of those affected. During the week of Oct. 7 - 13, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), in partnership with the National Fire Protection Association, are encouraging individuals and families to have a fire escape plan. People can protect their homes and loved ones from emergencies by making their homes safer now and throughout the year.

Hundreds of thousands of fires happen in and around American homes every year, killing or injuring thousands of people and causing untold damage to families and communities. In 2010 alone, a total of 362,100 residential fires resulted in 2,555 deaths, 13,275 injuries, and more than $6.6 billion in property loss.

FEMA Region III Acting Regional Administrator Robert Welch encourages everyone to prepare for and prevent against a fire.

“In the event of a fire, remember that every second counts, so you and your family must always be prepared. Having an escape

plan and practicing it can help you get out quickly,” advises Welch.

The best way to prepare for a fire is to plan in advance and practice your response plan. Here are some suggestions for how to get ready: •Check that all smoke alarms work USFA recommends that every residence be equipped with both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms or dual sensor smoke alarms, which contain both ionization and photoelectric smoke sensors; •Make sure that there are two ways out of every room Practice with family members including children, older family members, and individuals who have access and functional needs so that every person knows how to use both ways to get to safety.

VFA-34 flyover opens Penn State vs. Navy game

BY LT. J.G. CHELSEA DECKER VFA-34 Public Affairs Officer The “Blue Blasters” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 34 helped open the Pennsylvania State University vs. U.S. Naval Academy football game Sept. 15.The Nittany Lions defeated the Midshipmen by a score of 34 - 7.

Lt. Joshua Feldman, Penn State Class of 2006, and Lt. Dustin Wood, Naval Academy Class of 2006, conducted the fly over at Beaver Stadium on perfect timing and cue from the ground controller, Lt. Timothy Breen, Naval Academy Class of 2006.The section of Blaster jets flew over the stadium after the Penn State Blue Band’s playing of the national anthem. Feldman was the drum line captain in the Blue Band from 2002 - 2006.

The game was recognized as Military Appreciation Day. Aviation Machinist Mate 2nd Class Brent Munz, Aviation Electronics Technician 3rd Class (AW) Bryan Bourke and Aviation Electrician’s Mate 3rd Class (AW) Corey Loveless were participants in the Penn State champion parade and escorted the Penn State Dance Team with their national championship trophy onto the field during half time.The

Following half time, all six members of VFA-34 were recognized in appreciation of their service, as well as their pristine flyover before kickoff.

In addition to the flyover, the pilots held a static display and question-and-answer session for students in the Penn State Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) unit. It is the same unit from which Feldman received his commission. The Blasters received outstanding support for the flyover from Lt. Cmdr. Richard Dungan, the NROTC sophomore and aviation advisor.

The football game made for a memorable weekend for the Blue Blasters,being part of the first Penn State vs.Navy game since 1974. It was a triumphant weekend for Penn State fans, Feldman, Munz and Bourke.

Feldman described his experience.“It was great to go back as an officer and visit with the NROTC and Blue Band. It was a standout day to conduct the flyover as an alumnus,celebrate my birthday,and then watch Penn State achieve their first win of the season. Go State, Fly Navy!”

The Center for Personal and Professional Development (CPPD) began formal delivery Oct. 1 of two revised courses that all new Navy instructors or Operational Risk Management command managers and assistants must attend.

The new Navy Instructor Training Course (NITC) has replaced the Journeyman Instructor Training (JIT) course, and the revised Operational Risk Management Applications and Integration (ORM A&I) course is now being delivered by CPPD instructors. ORM A&I was previously delivered by contractors.

“The CPPD team is proud to begin delivery of this new content to the fleet,” said CPPD Commanding Officer Capt. John Newcomer.“These courses reflect CPPD’s commitment to providing Sailors with the

latest, most relevant learning to help them assess risk and apply critical thinking skills.

When Sailors are able to make sound personal and professional decisions, mission readiness increases for the Sailors and the commands where they serve.”

A three-week pilot course of NITC was conducted beginning April 6, and the ORM A&I pilot was held June 11-14. Both pilots, which took place at CPPD Learning Site Dam Neck, put all aspects of the courses to the test, which included validating the curriculum, materials and course length.

“We learned some good lessons from both course pilots, which we integrated into the final version of the content,” said CPPD Acting Director of Training Jean Kirchner.

TURRETTO RAMOS NAS Oceana Public Affairs NAS Oceana is the only naval installation in the world to operate a drive-through galley option for hungry, hard-working Sailors and Marines.

The Fly By Drive-Thru is operated by two dedicated individuals, Culinary Specialist 3rd Class Nick Hilger and Marine Corps Food Specialist Sgt. Thomas Heinsohn. Together they form the dedicated team who provides this unique service to the military at Oceana.

The team arrives at the galley at 4:30 a.m. Monday through Friday to begin prepping equipment and preparing food for the day’s customers who start to roll in at 6 a.m.

“At about 6:30 - 7 o’clock, is when it really starts getting busy here,” said Hilger. “Right around that time, people are trying to get to work; they stop here and pick something up real quick.”

Heinsohn said he sometimes comes in on the weekends on his own time, to help get things started for the following week and help keep things running smoothly.

“When I don’t come in and prep anything but we have a busy day, it usually takes a complete hour and half time frame

to get everything ready just to open up on time,” explained Heinsohn. “You have to make sure that it’s cooked correctly. It may seem like it’s simple, but there’s a lot that goes into it, especially because we have multiple line items to prepare.”

Heinsohn explained how this is no ordinary drive through.According to Heinsohn, a drive through staff would normally be assigned different responsibilities to create a seamless process.For example,one person takes orders, one makes sandwiches, one prepares sides and another pours drinks and bags the items for the customers.

“We’re in charge of doing everything and it’s not like a regular drive-through where one person is taking your money, the other person is giving you the drinks and somebody else is in the back cooking.

We are actually doing everything so it’s a lot harder,” said Heinsohn. “When somebody comes through, we actually have to assemble the whole sandwich, make sure the cheese is melted and everything.”

Heinsohn said it can get even more hectic when one of the team members has a medical appointment or prior obligation. It leaves just one person manning the drive through and prepping for breakfast and lunch.

“We can pre-make some items for breakfast, but everything is made to order for lunch,” says Heinsohn.

The Fly By Drive-Thru serves an estimated 160 cars per day, with some of the vehicles having multiple orders.

“On a busy day, we have cars backed up all the way to the street and sometimes into the parking lot across the street,” said Hilger.

Since the grand reopening of the Fly By Drive-Thru May 15, 2011, it has accounted for nearly one third of the total daily sales of the galley, according to Chief Warrant Officer 4 Wayne Cummings, food service officer at the galley. The drive-through was originally established in 1999 and was operational in 2000. Personnel could come through and get whatever was being served inside the galley in a “to-go” box.

“We went through and revamped the equipment and menu,” said Cummings.

“That menu was kind of geared toward the younger audience with combo meals and we incorporated a healthy choice for each meal.”

“The people who work the drive through have to be some of the most de-

pendable people that I have, possess the best customer service skills, be action oriented, take initiative and be a self starter and that’s why those two gentlemen are back there. They come in everyday. I can depend on them to be wide open, ready to go at 6 o’clock, serving the customers and taking care of them,” said Cummings.

The Fly By is open Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., offering breakfast for $2.45 until 9:30 a.m. and lunch for $4.55, beginning at 10 a.m.

“Where can you get a better deal and all the entree items, fruit and drink? Where can you get deal like that? And all you have to do is go to the back of the galley.It’s a no brainer,” said Cummings.

‘Tomcatters’ officer earns top maintenance honors from CSFWL

BY CATHY HEIMER Jet Observer Along with the 2012 “Mutha” award, Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 31 can boast of another award from Commander, Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic (CSFWL).

Lt. j.g. Michael McNeal, the “Tomcatters” maintenance material control officer, earned top honors as CSFWL’s Ground Maintenance Officer of the Year.

“I certainly didn’t expect to have my name tossed in the hat [for the award] with this being my first tour as a ground officer,”said McNeal, who was commissioned in 2009 as a Limited Duty Officer.

While he can’t say for certain why he was selected for the award, he believes the squadron’s “good run of awards and inspections” played a major role, including the material control inspection (MCI).

“We probably had the best score in recent history,”he said about the post-deployment inspection.

During the MCI, CSFWL opens up two of the aircraft and uses a very strict syllabus to conduct a corrosion inspection of each aircraft, as well as looking for any loose hardware, all nuts and bolts are tightened down, any wiring discrepancies and overall cleanliness. The inspectors then walk the flightline and do a visual inspection of other aircraft.A culmination of points determines whether the squadron passes or fails.

“They just want to see how well you’re actually taking care of your aircraft,” said McNeal.

The majority of his job involves maintenance planning and keeps him in close contact with the squadron’s maintenance master chief.“We’re scheduling our maintenance accordingly and we’re following our practices by the book,” he explained.The Tomcatters’ Maintenance Department includes nearly 185 Sailors.

“I’m more or less a coordinator between the operations side and the maintenance side. I’m able to negotiate schedules with the operations officer and make sure maintenance control isn’t impacted too much,” he said.

Because there needs to be a good balance between the squadron’s operations and maintenance, McNeal sees himself as“one of the pieces of the puzzle to help.”

McNeal said he likes everything about his job, including the maintenance aspect, which he describes as“just something I ‘grew up’ with.” He also enjoys mentoring Sailors as well as the overall mission, including deployments.

As an enlisted Sailor, McNeal also worked on Tomcats, so supervising the restoration of the Tomcat in front of Fleet Area Control Surveillance Facility Virginia Capes (FACSFAC VACAPES) during the summer brings back — See Award, Page 18

BY CATHY HEIMER Jet Observer For nearly 15 years, Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility, Virginia Capes (FACSFAC VACAPES) has been home to the static display of an F-14 Tomcat. Sitting just inside their fence line along Oceana Boulevard, the jet is in clear view of the public; many of whom frequently pull over and walk up to the fence to photograph the iconic aircraft, made famous by the movie “Top Gun.” While the jet is located at FACSFAC VACAPES, the command itself has no personnel to maintain the jet.“Here at VACAPES we don’t have anybody that can do that kind of work, so we rely on that ‘Mutha’ award winner to maintain the aircraft,” explained Cmdr. Jeff Blake, executive officer of FACSFAC VACAPES. The annual Mutha award, first given out in the mid1960s is presented to the command with the most fighter/ strike fighter spirit among the East Coast squadrons, explained Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 31 Commanding Officer Cmdr. Brian Becker. The award was presented to the “Tomcatters” in June following the Strike Fighter Fling.

Commands are judged on what they have done to enhance strike fighter spirit among East Coast squadrons, how they perform in the air, both with air-to-air and airto-ground operations, and how they have performed on maintenance inspections “We’ve done well with that. We have a reputation on the flight line as being a very tactical squadron,” explained Becker.

But the award also encompasses community service.

The Tomcatters have volunteered with Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity and with Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation.“It’s a way to raise awareness of the strike fighter

community outside of the base,” explained Becker about the community relations projects.

But this year’s rehab of the F-14 was not exactly the project envisioned by the Tomcatters. Although previous Mutha winners had painstakingly repainted the Tomcat in their squadrons’ colors, nearly 15 years of sitting out in the elements had taken its toll on the aircraft structure that no amount of paint was going to be able to cover.

“Wow!This is going to take a while.What have we gotten into,” is how Lt. j.g. Michael McNeal,VFA-31’s maintenance material control officer, summed up this department’s reaction when they first surveyed the F-14, immediately after the award presentation.

For drivers passing by at 55 miles an hour, the plane “looked pretty decent but when you got up close to it, it was pretty bad,” explained Aviation Structural Mechanic (AM) 1st Class (AW) Shawn McNutt, VFA-31 Corrosion Control Workcenter’s leading petty officer.

“The entire aircraft had pretty much worn away.There was corrosion all the way down through the structure of the aircraft, there was a hole in the radon [nose cone] and it had rotted through,” explained McNutt.

“Pretty bad” included two and a half to three feet wide sections of paint coming off the plane. Maintenance personnel quickly discovered another problem with the jet.

“The birds had made a mess, a lot of bird droppings,” explained McNutt, which included remains of birds’ nests in the corrosion holes.

Because the jet had rolled forward off of its concrete pad and both the tires and struts were deflated, it was stuck deep in the mud. Blake explained that it took a great deal of teamwork with the staff at Commander, Strike — See F-14, Page 13

Petty Officer Janssen said she admires her father’s work ethic and plans to follow his example throughout her own career. “My dad’s always been someone who I’ve looked up to. He’s the reason I joined the Navy,” she said.

“He’s a dual warfare qualified senior chief and he’s stuck with the Navy for such a long time.I admire how much he loves what he does.”

Assistance dog makes strides in training

Norfolk command praises experience

BY DAVID TODD The Flagship In July, Jet Observer and Flagship readers were introduced to Chief, a black Labrador Retriever who is an Assistance Dog in Training (ADIT) for the non-profit organization Veterans Moving Forward (VMF), and puppy raisier Sherry Mathews, who works at Navy Warfare Development Command (NWDC) on Naval Station Norfolk.

Now seven months old, Chief has been exposed to approximately 20 of the 30 commands he will learn during the course of his training that will span 18 months. Once completed, he will be able to make a meaningful difference in the life of a veteran, enabling them to have more safety and independence in their living and working environments.

“He has done basic obedience, intermediate obedience and we are currently in private lessons,” said Mathews, explaining that through his training, the dog has become calmer and more adjusted to his surroundings. “He just seems more comfortable with the work environment.”

This is the first time that NWDC has participated in a project such as this and Mathews explained that she and Chief have received overwhelming support from the command.

What they thought would be a simple repainting project was very quickly discovered to be much more than that. In fact, when it was completed, a team of nearly 10 Sailors from VFA-31 had spent more than 1,100 man-hours bringing the jet back to its colorful past.

With the squadron in the middle of two detachments, McNeal explained,“We had to schedule it around the operational commitments,” which included operating from three fronts — at Oceana,Pensacola,Fla.and off USS Harry S.Truman (CVN 75).

“We were scattered pretty thin. We started out with a small crew and as we got more people in, we threw more people on the project,” explained McNeal, adding “It took a little bit longer than any of us would have liked but the end result was better.”

The humid,hot summer weather also affected their ability to work. With no shade around the jet and the heat index reaching 105 for the first 15 days, work began at 5 a.m.and finished up before the hottest part of the day.Also with the heavy and hot safety gear Sailors had to wear, they were not able to work more than an hour at a time without a break.

They also encountered several problems with creating the vintage stencils for the aircraft, which includes a black Felix the Cat on its tail. Because of their size, only the stencils’ outlines could be done in sections on the squadron’s plotter.Also with the designs no longer in their database, McNutt and his team created the details by hand, using hours of Internet research and, old squadron photos. A former Tomcat mechanic, McNutt also recreated details from memory.

Becker explained the finished jet with its “old-school, 70s paint scheme,” has received a very positive reaction and continues to receive many thank-yous,especially from retired Sailors and aviators who worked on or flew the Tomcat.

With the squadron’s existence dating back to 1935 and their“Felix the Cat”insignia back to the 1920s,Becker also

saw the project as a history lesson of sorts for squadron personnel.“We’re very proud of our history.It’s something we emphasize so that we understand we have the responsibilities we have as a squadron for those who came before us and those that are coming after us.”

“A lot of junior guys had never even been up to close to one, so there were a lot of questions,” said McNutt.

The final touches at the static display were added in late August by chief petty officer selectees, who replaced the

For Becker, restoring the Tomcat to its former glory is part of his command philosophy of “At Felix, we do it right the first time and every time. It’s the Felix way.”That philosophy translates to all aspects of the squadron, from paperwork to maintenance to flying.

“If we wouldn’t have put the time and effort into this, that jet wouldn’t have made it another five years,with that

major corrosion and major damage that hadn’t been repaired,” said Becker.

If left without adequate maintenance,VFA-31 estimates it would be about five years for theTomcat to start to deteriorate.“Corrosion never stops and with that aircraft being in the wide open environment, even in the condition it’s in right now, it’s corroding. It will continue to corrode. It might take a year, it make take five, 10 years for the next major overhaul. It just depends on how fast the corrosion moves,” explained McNeal.

If the Tomcatters earn the award again next year, Becker said “we would look at doing the yearly maintenance, making sure the birds and Mother Nature haven’t been through too much on any one side and we would touch it up and make sure it stays nice.”

All agree that if minor repairs are made each year, in addition to painting it, the jet could remain structurally solid for a long time.

The aircraft on static display, including those in the Aviation Historical Park and in front of Oceana’s galley and FACSFAC VACAPES, are on loan to NAS Oceana from the Naval Aviation Museum, which requires annual documentation of the physical condition of each by Oceana’s public affairs staff.

To Blake’s knowledge, the jet in front of his building that borders Oceana Boulevard is the only one located off the base, where the general public can see it, without having to access the base.“This is the only place where the true public drives by and this was not representative of naval aviation,” he said about aircraft’s former condition.

The public’s fascination with the jet became obvious to VFA-31’s maintenance crew. Even as they began work on the jet,McNutt said people stopped by and took photos of the Tomcat from outside of the fence and wanted to talk to the Sailors as they worked.

“I’m very proud that our guys were able to take time and do this the right away…I’m glad we could bridge that gap between what we do and what the public gets to see,” said Becker.

“VFA-31 came over here and they really went above and beyond what’s been done in many, many years, to restore the airplane back,” said Blake.“They could have just come over and painted it but they did a full press restoration.”

Everything Paul knew, he learned. This may sound really simplistic, but it is actually pretty profound. Paul was a very educated, highly-trained man and yet, he says that he had to learn to stoke the fires of contentment,while facing difficulties and stressors. This is an awesome truth! Paul does not say that contentment comes to those who withdraw from the daily grind, nor does it come to a select few who are born blessed with a joyful personality. Paul says that he learned contentment in the day-by-day school of service and work; family and friends; sickness and health; abundance and need.

Take a close look at that last sentence quoted above.

Paul’s greatest resource was the personal relationship of his God — the one who strengthened Paul for each task, and delivered joy into every situation. When you and I learn this, our circumstances will be transformed into platforms for knowing the love, peace and joy of God in our lives!

The two-day ORM A&I course meets a Chief of Naval Operations requirement for commands to have two Sailors — one ofďŹ cer and one senior enlisted (or civilian equivalent) — trained in ORM A&I. As the designated curriculum control authority for ORM A&I, CPPD coordinates closely on course content with the Naval Safety Center, which is the ORM A&I Course Curriculum Model Manager. CPPD instructors began teaching the jointly developed curriculum to expand availability of the course to better meet eet requirements, according to Kirchner. “The revised ORM A&I course provides a collaborative environment that teaches students the skills and resources they need to perform as ORM managers and specialists,â€? said Kirchner.“Effectively applying the ORM process helps a command’s overall readiness by reducing mishaps, lowering injury and property damage costs, and using its resources more efďŹ ciently.â€?

While ORM A&I does not grant a Navy Enlisted ClassiďŹ cation (NEC) code, Sailors graduating from NITC will be granted the 9502 NEC. Also, Sailors who have previously attended JIT or the prior version of ORM A&I will not be required to re-attend the newly revised courses.

Enlisting nearly 17 years ago as an aviation electronics technician, McNeal first worked on F-14s at Fighter Squadron (VF) 103 and then at Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Division (AIMD), which at that time repaired the Tomcats.

It was during his tour at VF-213, the squadron transitioned to the F/A-18 Super Hornet, where he joked how “a lot of us went kicking and screaming. We didn’t really want to see the jet go but it was time.”

McNeal added,“They were hard to work on but it was really worth it to see them fly.”

After making chief during his tour with the “Black Lions,” he went to VFA-106, where he worked on the E/F side with the Super Hornets and decided to apply for a commission as a Limited Duty Officer. In 2009, he was commissioned as an ensign.

Originally slated to be a legal officer at a school command, he didn’t argue but instead explained, “I did go squadron to squadron to see if there was any jobs available to see if anyone wanted to hire me.”Eventually a billet opened up with theTomcatters and he was able to instead transfer just across the flightline.

After reading his orders, Buss thanked all those who have supported him during his career, and commended

Myers on his superb leadership and amazing legacy.

Buss also addressed the men and women of Naval Air Forces and described the value of naval aviation.

“Naval aviation’s incalculable value to this sovereign nation has never been...and should never be... in dispute,” said Buss.“But we are at an inflection point in our Navy and with naval aviation,make no mistake about that.Funding and resources could become tight.Tough choices will need to be made.”

Buss is a 1978 graduate of the U.S.NavalAcademy and native of Lancaster, Pa.As a flag officer, Buss has served twice on the Chief of Naval Operations’ staff and 14 months in Baghdad as director, strategy/plans/assessments (J-5) for the Multi-National Force Iraq under Gen. David Petraeus and Gen. Ray Odierno. His command tours include USS Sacramento (AOE 1), USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), Carrier Strike Group 12 aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 65), and Task Force 20 while serving as deputy commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk.

Myers will be assigned as the next Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Integration of Capabilities and Resources (N8), at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

SHAPE gets Sailors fighting fit

BY MCSN ROB AYLWARD Navy Public Affairs Support Element East As the biannual Navy Physical Health Assessment (PHA) season comes into full swing for the fleet,many senior Sailors may find themselves searching for ways to maximize their individual PHA results and soothe pretest anxieties.

Some active duty Sailors choose to stay in shape using their command fitness leader’s program, while others design their own workouts inspired by individual interests.

Among the Navy’s myriad options is a lesser-known program, targeted at senior personnel over the age of 40, taking place just down the street from Naval Station Norfolk at the Joint Forces Staff College (JFSC) gym.

“We think of ourselves as the Navy’s best kept secret,” said Joseph Denk, a Senior Health Assessment Program Enterprise (SHAPE) certified fitness trainer.“We are definitely trying to get the word out.”

The SHAPE program at JFSC is in its fifth year of providing group exercise classes for adults, facilitating command physical training, and creating custom fitness plans for active duty personnel 40 years of age and older. Eighty-five percent of participants at JFSC are officers, said Denk, but any active duty service member is welcome to take part in the group classes, like indoor cycling and suspension training, offered on site Monday through Friday.

The team of fitness professionals at SHAPE are trained to help each client make positive changes in their lifestyle in order to assist them in achieving their fitness goals.

“We figure out what their obstacles might be that are holding them back from their wellness or fitness goals and we develop a strategy to help them overcome these barriers,”said Denk.“Some come in and say ‘I can’t fail this PRT or I will be separated.’ Others are high performers trying to maximize their performance. It’s not just getting them

to walk more, drink more water, or have better eating and sleeping habits. Seventy percent of success is based on what happens after a client leaves the gym.”

SHAPE’s contract with DOD limits one-on-one training to active duty personnel 40 years of age and older.These senior service members often have specific physical challenges accrued from many years of deployments and heavy exercise.

Senior Chief Electrician’s Mate Eric Deleeuw,a fleet support tech at Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, began attending the group exercise classes after hearing about the program from a coworker.

“Over the past several years, I have had periodic back strains and pain,” said Deleeuw.“I wanted the trainers to assist me in developing a workout regimen to help me strengthen certain areas and minimize injury. They can tailor the workouts and modify movements to minimize discomfort.”

Program participants, like Deleeuw, are finding that the corrective and functional exercises prescribed by their trainer have positively impacted their lives outside of the gym.

“It’s improved my physical fitness level, it has made the PRT much easier and given me more energy throughout the day,” said Deleeuw.

Apart from boosting performance on the PRT, the most frequent request from clients new to SHAPE is to generally feel better or move better, said Denk.

“The benefit of what we do is related to body stabilization,” said Denk.“We enhance weaknesses to make the whole body better and give clients skills to take with them to their next assignment.”

Road, Norfolk.The run/walk begins at the West Point Memorial at 9 a.m., continues through the Elmwood Cemetery, and ends at the memorial.

Registration through Oct. 19 is $30 adults, $25 children. Event day registration is $40 and begins at 7:30 a.m., next to the Elmwood Cemetery Office. Awards to the top three male and female overall, and top three male and female for each age group.

Costumes may be worn but participants are asked to be respectful of the deceased.
