Enlarged Heart Common Condition for Grandmas

It was just six “short” years ago that our first grandchild was born, a little girl more precious than any I ever had the privilege of calling granddaughter (of course she is my only granddaughter). Since that time, God has blessed us with three grandsons (two 2-year-olds and one 2-month-old). By the way, the 2-year-olds are not twins; our daughters just happened to have sons about a month apart.

After my granddaughter was born, I wondered how in the world I would be able to love any other grandchildren in the same way because I loved our little Kaylah so much.

I mentioned my quandary to my husband. You wouldn’t think that would have been a concern since we already had three beautiful daughters whom we love unconditionally and we knew how to “spread” the love.

But there is just something different about the love for a grandbaby; maybe because spending time with them brings back the memories of time spent with our own little ones. When you mix the past emotions with the present emotions, there is an extraordinary bond that develops with that grandchild. Maybe that’s where the term “grand” child comes into play. One day, shortly before the 2-yearolds were born, we were discussing my concern, and my husband reassured me I’d find there was enough room in

my heart to love more than one grandbaby equally. He was absolutely right.

One of our little gents, LJ, is extremely taken with his papa and only has a desire to spend time with me when he sees my purse. He realizes tasty, sugar-free treats are stored within. He drags my purse to me and climbs up in my lap. He doesn’t ask for the candy. He just looks at me and then at the purse and then back at me, then back at the purse, until I give in and give him the treasure he seeks.

I usually give him only one or two pieces at a time because he’s certain to stuff everything into his little mouth all at once. And just as soon as he finishes the candy, there he goes, back in search of his beloved papa.

But even though I’m not his favorite, I love him dearly.

If mommy, daddy or papa is not around, then nana could possibly become the chosen one.

Our other little man, Jakari, is also very fond of his papa. He’s particularly fond of him when he is competing with LJ for papa’s attention. But when he looks at me with those big dark eyes and his little chubby cheeks crease with dimples, if I didn’t have room in my heart, it would just have to pop to make room. He’s quick to grab my finger and pull me to the couch and tell me what to do … “weed (read), nana.” And usually, no matter how tired I am or what I’m doing, I find myself “weeding” about baby animals.

Then there’s little Ben, LJ’s brother. He’s the noisiest

little one I’ve ever been around, not crying, just making little baby sounds. I suppose he will be the talker. Whether he’s sleeping or nursing a bottle, he continues to make little squeaky hamster-like sounds. He curls up in a little baby ball and snuggles in close. And the world belongs to him; there goes my heart … growing again! I have to cherish these moments because I know all too soon he will inevitably become “one of papa’s boys” and he’ll only come to nana when he wants something, whether it be a tiny piece of candy or a stolen moment with a book.

If he turns out to be anything like his brother, little kisses and snuggles will be few and far between for nana … at least while they’re toddlers! But that’s OK because one thing is certain, our little princess is always willing to wrap her arms around my neck and love on her nana.

I guess you could say I have an incurable condition.

Sometimes I just watch them as they play, oblivious to anything else going on around them, and thank God for the awesome blessing just to be their nana.

I believe there is a common bond between grandmothers.

That bond is characterized by an irreversible heart condition. You see, I have an enlarged heart, not because of a weak muscle, but because of an abundance of love.

As parents, we love our children; but love takes on a whole new meaning when we are blessed with grandchildren! To all those grandmothers who share my condition … Happy Mother’s Day.

RESCUE CHALLENGE Fort Lee First Responders Participate in Rare Training Event Designed to Foster Professional Development, Camaraderie

Fort Lee first responders recently enhanced their ability to save lives.

Six members of the post Fire and Emergency Services department participated as members of the Crater Regional Technical Rescue Team in the 17th Rescue Challenge, a noncompetitive fire and rescue event being held this week that serves to better the skills of fire and emergency personnel around the state.

Franklin Tanner, assistant chief, FES, said Rescue Challenge fills a void for firefighters and emergency personnel to share ideas and improve skills.

“This is a way for people to get together and share in a team-building experience,” he said during an event Tuesday in Richmond. “We also get to exercise the equipment we don’t normally use.”

Rescue Challenge 2011 began Monday and will conclude today.

Richmond-area fire and emergency service departments hosted the event that included a high-angle rescue, confined space, trench rescue and heavy lifting and moving. The Ordnance School’s

The 23-member Crater team – composed of six personnel from Fort Lee and others from Hopewell, Petersburg, Colonial Heights and Prince George County – took part in several events including a high-angle rescue at Richmond’s Perdue Chicken Plant Tuesday.

In that event, team members were required to perform a rescue operation in which a worker was injured inside a building – but not just any structure.

“We had to go in and go up about 130 feet into a grain silo,” said Tanner, “and then go down approximately 30 feet inside the silo to remove a victim.”

Once the victim was removed, personnel rigged a system of ropes and pulleys to raise the victim, a 175-pound dummy, out of the silo onto a balcony, said Tanner.

“Then we had to build a high-angled line from the top of the silo down to the ground to allow for an attendant and victim to be safely lowered,” said Tanner.

The entire operation took about an hour to complete. Tanner said that although the Crater team trains on similar scenarios, this particular training provides a more robust training opportunity on many different levels.

“It’s not an event that benefits only a few people,” he said.

“Everyone gets involved at some level in these scenarios.”

Teams entered into this year’s Rescue Challenge also performed other training scenarios with central themes like parachutist in the tower, man in a pipe – trench collapse, flight of fear – indoor rope rescue in the dark and one in which rescuers were required to ascend 305 feet atop an amusement park ride at Kings Dominion.

Fort Lee firefightermedic Jeremy Ashworth, who was participating in Rescue Challenge for the second time, said the event is unique.

“I think it is a great experience and a great training experience,” he said. “We don’t see these things every day. It basically puts great tools in our bag just in case we are put under those circumstances.”

Ashworth also said the event helps to strengthen the Crater team, one that Fort Lee is obligated to support and one that it may have to call upon for on-post emergencies.

“We’re just one department,” said Ashworth of Fort Lee’s department.

“There are only so many people on duty every day. It takes more than one shift of guys at one fire station to accomplish something like this (the high-angled line). We know that once we put out the call, we know we got people with expertise from all over – Fort Lee, Petersburg, Colonial Heights, Prince George and Hopewell – to help.”

Fort Lee Increases FPCON Level

Force protection experts at Fort Lee are encouraging all members of the military community to be extra vigilant about security measures in the wake of recent world events.

“There has been no indication of a direct threat to installation Soldiers, family members or civilians; however, people are our most important asset, and their safety and security are our priority,” said Don Bradshaw, director for Plans, Training, Mobilization, Security and Emergency Services here. “(As a result of the recent death of Osama bin Laden,) the U.S. Northern Command has directed all Department of Defense forces to assume Force Protection Condition BRAVO,” he said. “The increase in FPCON provides for improved vigilance, security awareness and focus to deter suspicious activity and increase success in identifying possible threats.”

All installation workers and visitors should expect delays at post access points due to the heightened security activities, Bradshaw said. The additional congestion at the Fort Lee gates will continue until NORTHCOM authorizes the return to a lower FPCON level.

“In relation to the gate situation, the best advice I can offer is to plan ahead and adjust your travel times accordingly,” Bradshaw noted. “The Provost Marshal is working diligently to balance the increased frequency of inspections with our already heavy traffic load.

“Personnel entering the installation from Petersburg are reminded they can bypass Lee Gate and use Sisisky,” he continued. “It may be a short additional distance, but it saves frustration for both motorists and the PMO. Motorists are also reminded to anticipate whether they may clear intersections before the traffic lights change – getting stranded in the middle of the intersection only exacerbates traffic flow congestion.”

“A general awareness of the situation is required as well,” Bradshaw said. “Don’t discuss the security measures on Facebook or with others when you’re not certain who is seeing or hearing that information. What you do as a community member can be just as important as the measures applied by our force protection team.”

Other ways that community members can support Fort Lee’s force protection mission include the following: • Report anything that looks out of place – i.e., strange cars circling your neighborhood, suspicious packages or vehicles left unattended, or individuals who appear to be monitoring activities at the gates or other important areas.

• Be aware of your surroundings – don’t engage in casual conversations about unit training activities or additional security measures. This includes unencrypted e-mail and social media sites. A seemingly innocent comment in itself may not be harmful, but it could become one of the pieces to a much bigger puzzle that reveals a potential target for an attack.

• Always recognize the risk – don’t park in isolated areas where a criminal could have unseen access to your vehicle; vary your route to work or other frequent destinations; and always keep the fuel level in your vehicle above a quarter of a tank during long road trips to avoid running out of gas in a remote location.

New TRICARE Online Feature Expands Access FALLS CHURCH – A new TRICARE Online feature now gives users access to expanded personal health data including lab results, problem lists and encounter data. These capabilities mark an expansion of the current Blue Button that already allows beneficiaries to access their demographic information and allergy and medication profiles. The Blue Button feature encourages beneficiaries to actively engage in their health care.

Christine Hunter, deputy director, TRICARE Management Activity, said, “This new feature, called the Blue Button, is a major step forward in engaging our beneficiaries as partners in their own health care. Personal electronic health records can improve patient care by conveying accurate patient information between providers, avoiding duplication of tests and reducing delays in treatment.”

TRICARE Online is the Military Health System’s Internet point of entry that provides all 9.6 million Department of Defense beneficiaries access to available health care services and information through an enterprise-wide secure portal.

Military Recognizes Role of Spouses Friday is being set aside to recognize the wives and husbands of more than a million active-duty military members, Guardsmen and Reservists.

May 6, 2011, is Military Spouse Appreciation Day, which the Department of Defense will mark with ceremonies and celebrations on installations worldwide.

The Fort Lee Army Community Service is hosting a luncheon Friday in appreciation for military spouses, said Stephanie Parker, ACS Director. “ACS, traditionally and annually, provides a wonderful luncheon that offers laughter, great food and entertainment,� she said. “It’s important we show support to military spouses because it strengthens the entire military family. Spouses are so diverse in their talents and support of the active duty member. ACS invites the talents and contributions of spouses to enhance family programs.�

Parker said the military spouse’s role has changed over the years, and the spouses are much more diverse. “ACS leads the charge to find ways to support all military spouses and not just the ones who fit the stereotype,� she said. “ACS continues to build services and reach out to the marginalized spouses out there. We want to ensure our support meets the need of a spouse who is overwhelmed or lonely from multiple deployments or long hours or simply at the end of the rope from managing the demands of being

married to a military member.�

President Barack Obama noted that spouses are part “of the force behind the force� during his remarks last month to announce a national initiative tagged “Joining Forces,� which is aimed at increasing the support of U.S. military families. “They, too, are the reason we’ve got the finest military in the world,� he added.

Military Spouse Appreciation Day has been observed since 1984, with a standardized date later declared to be the Friday before Mother’s Day. This year, the Army reaffirms its steadfast commitment to supporting the hundreds of thousands of wives and husbands of Soldiers stationed overseas and stateside – and those deployed to combat zones.

Additionally, the Army community is recognizing surviving spouses, whose loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice. “For any leader, the loss of a Soldier is hard,� said Lt. Gen. Rick Lynch, commander of Installation Management Command. “But the loss that survivors experience is magnitudes deeper and wider.� “To honor the fallen Soldier’s service and sacrifice for our nation,� Lynch added, “we can do one last thing: Offer support for the loved ones the Soldier left behind.�

It is this type of tribute to spouses that is part of Joining Forces, which was launched April 12 by First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden. Their

efforts, based on conversations with military families, will focus on three key areas: employment, education and wellness.

In the area of employment, the first lady said she and Biden will be champions for military spouses as they pursue jobs and advance careers. On education, they’ll help spouses continue their studies and obtain degrees.

And on wellness, “we’re going to remind our nation that just as our troops deserve the best support when dealing with the stresses of war and long deployments, so do military spouses,� the first lady said.

And they’ll join forces with private industry. Some companies will inform military spouses working at their stores that they’ll have a job when they move to a new duty location.

Plus the Chamber of Commerce also is stepping up, Obama said, by encouraging members to hire military spouses and veterans and to find mentors for military wives. The Chamber has agreed to host more than 100 job fairs across the country.

really wasn’t going well. My wife was taking care of me, and she was working all the time. One day, I just snapped and couldn’t do it anymore. I couldn’t have her working all the time, taking care of us. I had to step up, and that’s why I joined the Army. I had to support my family; I had to do what was right.�

Most of your peers are 10 years your junior. How do you ďŹ t in?: “I just reflect who I am. I try to talk to everybody.

Sometimes it’s hard because their mentality is not the same. My mentality is work, work, work, follow the values and do what you’re supposed to do. Some of the younger Soldiers are still learning that. Some are still ‘mama’s boys.’ They’ll learn, and I know that.�

One deďŹ ning moment as a Soldier: “I was in (Mosul) Iraq.

I was working at the JSS (forward operating base), and one night, we

heard a lot of boom, booms (the sound of bombs being detonated).

That freaked me out, but I was also prepared for it. I was mentally prepared for whatever came my way. I thought a lot about my family, wondering if I was ever going to make it home.�

Best thing about the Army: “It pays the bills.�

Worst thing about the Army: “We’re working 15 hours a day because there is a shortage of cooks right now, so we’re picking up the slack.�

Why you chose your MOS: “To take care of the Soldiers.

Honestly, I felt like I was too old to join the infantry. I wasn’t in the best shape, and if you can’t join them, why not help them, support them and cook for them.

Soldiers love to eat, especially on deployment; they love their chow time. And, if we can give them that time, why not?�

The agency hopes putting a new twist on its old motto will help commissaries worldwide build an even stronger connection with millions of authorized customers. The change is designed to enhance the way commissary customers feel about the value of their benefit with a clear message that confirms their ownership in it, said DeCA Director and CEO Joseph H. Jeu. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It may seem like a small change, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a significant one because it makes our message more versatile,â&#x20AC;? Jeu said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It allows us to promote all the different ways we work to make the commissary worth the trip for our customers â&#x20AC;&#x201C; through superior savings, service, selection and facilities â&#x20AC;&#x201C; under the umbrella of a single, more personalized motto.â&#x20AC;?

54th QM Performs with Dignity, Respect

CONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE ADDER, Iraq – When a neatly folded American flag is given to a family member of a fallen Soldier, it signifies the Soldier’s last return home.

But before a service member makes his/her final journey, he or she must be properly cared for. And that’s where members of the 54th Quartermaster Company, 4th Special Troops Battalion, 4th Sustainment Brigade, 310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command come in.

The 54th QM Co., which is currently deployed to Contingency Operating Base Adder, Iraq, is one of two mortuary affairs companies in the active-duty Army and one of nine currently in theater.

Pfc. Cassandra Goddard, a mortuary affairs specialist and a Border, Texas, native, works alongside four others in initial receiving and processing of deceased service members and civilians for COB Adder and United States Division-South.

“We have a four-hour window to process the remains, the personal belongings they had at the time of death, and

ready them for a ramp ceremony to fly them out of country,” Goddard said.

Once the first four hours are in the books, there are 20 hours remaining for the team to process the service member’s personal belongings and have them flown home.

“You can’t get attached,” said Spc. Pierre Perea, another mortuary affairs specialist on the team, and native of Cobb County, Ga. “I’ve seen fellow coworkers in years past have problems on the job. I’ve had to intervene to make sure they get through the processing – you just have to get it done.”

The team, which has been at COB Adder for barely a month, works in six-month intervals; rotating out with other teams at Fort Lee. Spc. Jason Tinker, a Roseburg, Ore., native, said his team will soon take on responsibility from two other mortuary affairs locations in Iraq in addition to its current responsibilities.

“That’s going to make us really busy very soon,” he said.

“But we have already started packing as a pre-emptive strike.”

Tinker joined the Army after years of running his own business in general contracting, working as a firefighter and

accruing three degrees.

“I wanted to join as far back as 18 years old,” he said.

Now, three years into his service, Tinker, like others he works with, said he finds total fulfillment in his job.

“While working out here, I’m not doing this for the Army – I’m doing it for the families,” Tinker said. “For us, it’s all about dignity and respect.”

Tinker also understands the nuances of his work.

“It takes a specific type of person to do this duty,” he said. “Civilians have approached me at airports and thanked me for my service. They ask me what I do, and I tell them.

Then they rave about how hard it must be to do that – and they’re right.”

Tinker said that during his years of working in mortuary affairs, he’s processed hundreds of fellow service members.

“After all the work, I still see the faces. I still see their patch,” Tinker said. “I’ve run across Soldiers wearing the same patch and find myself just wondering. And I know that any day could be the one where I see one of my friends.”

Despite the difficulties of his undertakings, Tinker said he still sees the positives.

“When I go to bed at night, I’m satisfied in the work I’ve done.”

Sand Tray Helps Soldiers with PTSD

The use of sand trays and sand tray tables has long been a part of the behavioral health treatment regimen. Child therapists have used sand trays for their young patients to reenact facets of their lives that might be more difficult for a patient to express verbally due to limited vocabulary or fear of openly discussing the trauma event.

The same principle works in treating adults, including post-deployment Soldiers who have experienced combat trauma.

Credit for the development of therapeutic use of figures in sand trays is generally attributed to Margaret Lowenfeld, a British pediatrician and child psychiatrist. However, she acknowledged having been influenced by H.G. Wells, an English author who wrote in his book

home. Acting independently in the mid-20th century, Erik Erikson observed that adult patients, when presented with figures on a table, appeared to wrestle with attempts to overcome early childhood trauma through multiple reenactments of the trauma using PHOTO BY TEREASA WADE the small figures.

This is most commonly done by having the patient recall memories surrounding the trauma through the use of imagery and by confronting situations associated with a heightened fear response.

Because many Soldiers actively and/ or passively struggle to avoid fear-arousing situations and keep painful memories from their awareness in the hope of not having to deal with the anxiety associated with them, asking the Soldier to summon up such anxiety-arousing thoughts is often so difficult that therapeutic progress is stalled. However, by presenting the patient with a treatment modality in which he or she can use tactile and visual sensory channels to recall the trauma, the possibility of tapping into the personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s memories is enhanced.

Melanoma: Be Aware

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer.

Although it is not the most common, it is the deadliest form of skin cancer. Sun exposure is the most modifiable risk for melanoma. Melanoma does have other contributing factors, which include immune deficiencies and genetics.

Recent studies conducted by the University of Minnesota have revealed that indoor tanning beds increase the risk of developing melanoma up to 74 percent.

Increased use of tanning beds correlates with increased risk for melanoma. In 2009, more than 8,000 people died from melanoma and greater than 70,000 were diagnosed (per National Cancer Institute).

Increased concern regarding Vitamin D deficiency has been well publicized.

(Vitamin D is produced by the skin with ultraviolet B exposure). Some promoters of tanning recommend indoor tanning to help produce Vitamin D; however, vitamin D is produced with moderate UVB exposure. Tanning lamps typically emit fewer UVB rays and more UVA. A tan is a sign of sun damage and is the body’s attempt to block further damage.

Prevention is key! Avoid excessive sun exposure, wear wide brimmed hats when

in the sun, re-apply a broad spectrum sunscreen no less than every 2 hours when outdoors (at least SPF 30), perform frequent self skin examinations. If you notice a changing or concerning lesion, point it out to your provider.

Remember the ABCDEs: A= asymmetry (halves should be symmetrical).

B= border (ragged, scalloped, irregular edges).

C= color (should be confluent or uniform, not splotchy or different shades).

D= diameter (typically should be less than 6 mm).

E= evolving (changing in size, color or shape, or looks different than the others).

Look for the “ugly duckling,” or the mole that stands out from your other moles.

“While sunburn is the most efficient way to develop melanoma, chronic tanning is second best,” said Mark F. Naylor, M.D., associate professor of dermatology at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center in Oklahoma City.

Stacy Williams is a physician assistant who has completed specialty dermatology training. She works in the dermatology clinic, which is part of the primary care clinic. A referral is required for a dermatology appointment.

SAND TRAYS Many individuals are tactile and/or visual learners. This heightens the chances that they will be better able to express various aspects of their trauma and may also allow them to recall information that might not surface using imagery alone.

Tools used in sand trays to reenact some aspect of a combat scenario include a collection of toy soldiers, miniature combat vehicles, buildings and geographical features.

Even with the most complete set of miniatures, a Soldier may still find other channels more suitable to convey his or her story.

In one instance, a patient used a dry erase board in lieu of the sand tray because he did not think he could accurately recreate the complex road network necessary for him to recreate his trauma event.

This proved very helpful for him and for the other group members with whom he shared the events of that battle sequence.

Following his full recounting of the combat events, the patient said it was the first time he had allowed himself to relive fully the events and feelings of that day.

Whether the sand tray experience is conducted in individual sessions or in group sessions is also a matter of therapeutic preference and patient preference.

It has been observed that a strong bond with other post-deployment group members will often be the motivating factor for a Soldier to summon the courage to retell his/her combat story.

Group members who have provided feedback following the reenactments say they are typically transported back to their own trauma events during another’s sand tray experience, thus giving rise to the possibility that another Soldier’s story may be the catalyst for group members’ own reliving experiences.

Top Culinarians Compete for Regional Titles, Chance to Compete at ACF Nationals

It’s been a little more than six weeks since the 36th Annual Culinary Arts Competition concluded at Fort Lee, but the competitive spirit of that event has not waned for the U.S. Coast Guard Team, the Chef of the Year and the Junior Chef of the Year who the continue their quests for culinary greatness.

As part of their gold medal win in the Student Skills events, the Coast Guard team earned the chance to compete at the American Culinary Federation’s Western Regional Competition in Scottsdale, Ariz., April 29 May 2 and vie for the opportunity to compete at the national level.

The team, comprised of Food Service Specialist 2nd Class Katie Hietman, Food Service Specialist 2nd Class Tom Hunter, Food Service Specialist 2nd Class Clark Lauer, Food Service Specialist 3rd Class Jason Rohrs, Food Service Specialist 2nd Class Kiersten Lorditch, and team coach Food Service Specialist 1 Edward Fuchs, met at the Joint Culinary Center of Excellence April 24 to begin their final preparations for the competition. The team spent the week perfecting the menu items they had selected. Before their departure, each team member practiced daily the four areas that would make up the relay competition.

Once in Scottsdale, they began preparing their cold food display at the Arizona Culinary Institute. The U.S. Coast Guard Culinary Arts Student Skills team, which is comprised of five members aged 25 years or younger and E-5 or below, represented the entire Armed Forces during the competition.

Saturday, the team arranged its cold food display, a seafood platter which included salmon and lobster sausage, fish terrine, gravelox, vegetable salad, smoked salmon mousse and mustard dill vinaigrette.

The hot food challenge began Sunday with a blind-drawing for the student skills relay.

Lauer picked the pastry card, Rohrs picked the vegetable card, Hietman drew the chicken and Hunter pulled the fish card, which thrilled the team. Lorditch served as the team’s alternate and assisted them with their tasks as the rules allowed.

“We were hoping Tommy (Hunter) would get the fish,” Lauer said smiling.

Hunter is a recreational fisherman who was raised on the coast of Florida and has been filleting fish since he was a young child. In his spare time he works at fish markets near his duty station in California.

From start to finish, the team had 90 minutes to perform classical vegetable cuts, chicken fabrication (cutting a whole chicken) and fish fabrication (filleting a whole fish), and prepare a pastry cream. The second part of the relay had the team use the items from the four skills to create a four-course meal with four plates each in 90 minutes.

Hietman began the relay, followed by Hunter, Rohrs and then Lauer. Each member had to wait until the previous skill was completed before beginning his or her task.

Their dishes were completed on time and in good order. After the high intensity day, the team that had pulled several late and allnighters since arriving in Scottsdale, were finally able to enjoy the sites of the city.

Meanwhile, the Chef of the Year and Junior Chef of the Year trials were well under way.

Sgt. Billy Daugette, a member of the Pentagon Culinary Arts team and winner of the Chef of the Year title at the 36th Annual Culinary Arts Competition competed against other chefs for the opportunity to represent the ACF Western Region at the national event later this year.

Daugette said he felt well after his performance in the kitchen and looked forward to a little relaxation in the days before the awards ceremony.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Ghil Medina, who was named junior chef of the year at the 36th Annual Culinary Arts Competition at Fort Lee earlier this year, competed for and won the title of Junior Chef of the Year during the regional competition and will advance to the national event this summer.

Medina, who is assigned to 633rd Force Support Squadron at Joint Base LangleyEustis, spent weeks perfecting his recipe and gaining the support of his commanding officer, Lt. Col. Jenise Carroll, who accompanied the chef to the competition.

Carroll watched through a viewing window as Medina worked.

“He’s very disciplined and loves to cook,” she said.

Carroll said she didn’t know much about the culinary world when Medina told her the team wanted to come to Fort Lee to compete.

“When the team came home with so many medals, I realized this is serious business,” she said.

Medina returned to his commander after winning gold and told her he’d earned the opportunity to move to the next level.

“As his commander, I am honored to see him live out his passion,” she said.

Medina was relaxed before the event and worked methodically to prepare two plates

with four courses for the judges.

Monday evening at a gala event, all the competitors were honored and the winners announced. The Coast Guard team earned a Silver Medal for its performance and Daugette placed second in his competition.

Next year, the regional competition may not be necessary if the JCCoE completes the criteria to become a region-at-large for the ACF. Raymond Beu, JCCoE, director of training, said the annual showing at Fort Lee has more competitors and more events than some of the regional competitions and could possibly become its own regional event.

On Monday, the U.S. Army announced a partnership with Revolution Racing and NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity program for the 2011 season. During the upcoming racing campaign, the Army will serve as one of the primary sponsors for Revolution Racing in NASCAR’s K&N Pro Series races and as an associate sponsor for the entire roster of Revolution Racing drivers in both the K&N Pro Series and the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.

The Drive for Diversity program has

been created meaningful opportunities for minority and female competitors. The program helps to further diversify NASCAR’s participant and audience base. The program has seen continuous growth since its inception in 2004.

The 2011 season has started on a winning note for Revolution Racing with driver Darrell Wallace Jr. capturing a victory in the U.S. Army-sponsored car in the K&N Pro Series East race at Richmond International Raceway on April 28.

— FROM PAGE 2 can’t be and do everything people expect. Oftentimes we worry about what other people are thinking about us even in our job performance.

I was stationed in Korea almost seven years ago. One thing I realized while stationed there was that I had to learn how to depend on God to handle all my situations back in the states. For many situations that occur in our lives, we have little or no control over them, which can and does bring about stress. We must realize there are some situations that we can handle and there are some situations that are not within our control.

What helps me cope with stress is what Paul wrote in the book of Philippians 4: 4-7, “Rejoice in the Lord always: I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but be in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Shoplifting at the Fort Lee Exchange was a good news, bad news story in 2010 as the number of incidents decreased from the year before, but the cost of products involved in detected cases went up.

Thanks to an abundance of shoplifting prevention measures such as eagle-eyed closed circuit televisions with DVR technology, expanded use of high-tech Electronic Article Surveillance and an aggressive youth awareness campaign, theft at the Fort Lee Exchange decreased 15 percent last year, from 73 incidents in 2009 to 62. Thieves were more brazen, however, as the cost of merchandise involved in shoplifting at Fort Lee increased from $5,027.62 to $6,034.36 in 2010.

The Army & Air Force Exchange Service, which has contributed more than $2.4 billion to Air Force Services and Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command programs in the past 10 years, continues to focus its efforts on reducing theft.

108th Teams Up with Koreans during Exercise

Soldiers of the Korean Service Corps worked alongside troops from Fort Lee’s 108th Quartermaster Company during an annual training event that allows the KSC to practice its war-time mission.

This year’s two-week training exercise took place at Fort Pickett. The KSC arrived with 35 members to construct an inland Petroleum Distribution System. The IPDS consists of two pump stations and five miles of pipeline.

The 108th QM Soldiers gained valuable experience in pipeline operations while helping the KSC complete its training mis-

sion. During war time, the Korean unit can provide six companies for installing the IPDS. The KSC soldiers have invented a “J-hook” tool to better handle and carry the IPDS pipes. The special tool is also used to take the caps off each pipe during the construction of the pipeline.

Soldiers from both organizations said they learned a great deal from each other and witnessed different techniques to better accomplish the task of laying pipeline efficiently.

The group walks approximately 1-2 miles on tree-lined sidewalks along A and B avenues. This low-impact cardiovascular activity will help burn calories, reduce blood pressure and improve overall health.

Walk 2 Fitness A free Walk 2 Fitness program is available from the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Sports Office. Walking sessions are one hour for beginner and intermediate groups.
