‘Tis the season for pumpkin pickin’!

As the temperatures drop and your families’ fashion changes, don’t let the anticipation of the oncoming holiday season keep you from enjoying the best of autumn.

Pumpkin patches and corn mazes are popping up all over Eastern North Carolina so grab your family and head out for a day of fun.

The most popular and arguably the most visited pumpkin patch is located on Mike’s Farm in Beulaville, N.C. The family-owned and operated business focuses on “agri-tourism,” which teaches guests of all ages about agriculture while offering activities like a live petting zoo, a restaurant and a gift shop.

People searching for the perfect pumpkin will be escorted via hayride to the fields tucked away on the farm.

“It’s fun because you get to ride the tractor,” said Kristi Bagley, an active-duty Marine and mother of two. “(Mike’s Farm has) a big patch and a small patch. The pumpkins are reasonably priced, and they put new ones out almost daily.”

Many families take advantage of the local attraction each season and pick the patch clean. Depending on how they grow, pumpkins come in different shapes so the choice is yours.

Steer clear from the ones with bruises and soft spots if you want to ensure your pumpkins’ longevity.

“I love taking my kids there,” exclaimed Ashley Gordan, a military spouse and mother of three with one on the way. “It’s one of my favorite field trips.”

Another mother, Krystal Jones, agreed and said, “(It’s) a great place to take the kids.”

Ways to Decorate a Pumpkin Story by Sarah Anderson

Halloween is right around the corner, and soon it will be time to head down to the pumpkin patch to pick out a Jack-o-lantern-to-be. Tradition dictates the pumpkin must then have the top opened, the seeds removed (and most likely roasted for a salty snack later on) and its face bestowed with a classic, crooked grin with triangle eyes.

However, if you are looking to try something a little different and potentially less messy, give the following pumpkin decoration suggestions a try.

The possibilities to paint your pumpkin are truly endless and have no need for sharp knives, making it a safe alternative for young children. Whether they paint faces, landscapes or some-

thing more abstract such as polka dots, let your children bring out their inner Picasso and treat their pumpkin as their easel and canvas.

To create a silhouetted look, paint the entire pumpkin white then paint a simple figure in black, such as a spider, ghost or the recognizable jack-o-lantern face. The stark contrast will make your pumpkin stand out amongst the rest. Paint your family name or personal message across several pumpkins and place them along a walkway or porch for a unique greeting to your trick-or-treat visitors.

For a little pumpkin pomp, plug in the glue gun and stock up on sequins, gems, lace and anything metallic. Give the pumpkin a basecoat of metallic silver paint and use lace as

a paint stencil or attach it with glue for an elegant, timeless aesthetic. Apply a thin layer of craft glue over a small gourd and have your child roll it through a bowl of sequins until it is covered completely. Once dry, spray a clear coat over it in a well ventilated area to cement the sequins in place. If you use a plastic pumpkin, you will be able to enjoy your dazzling creations year after year.

Trick-or-treaters shouldn’t have all the fun. Dress up your pumpkin in a costume and make use of your own left over costumes at the same time. Wrap an old sheet around a pumpkin and cut out just the eyes to craft a simple ghost. Place it on top of a post and let the sheet hang below to give the illusion of elevation.

Lastly, masks are easily the

simplest way to decorate a pumpkin. Form a superhero theme with many pumpkins or keep it simple with complementary colored plastic masquerade masks. Encourage your children to construct their own masks out of construction paper or use left over masks that no longer fit that are stashed in the Halloween bin. With one mask you can instantly create a Jack-o-lantern, with a dash of humor thrown in.

The pumpkin patch nearest to you may not be a patch at all. Odds are it is your local supermarket or church. he kids are back in school, there is crispness in the air, and the unmistakable crunch of leaves can be heard from down the road. As the days grow shorter and the early morning dew succumbs to the first frost, many families begin to cherish their time outside, knowing winter is just around the corner.

The Crystal Coast is full of autumnal voyages for your family, from campgrounds to pumpkin patches. Without ever leaving the area, families can experience everything fall has to offer.

If you are searching for an easy family get away, consider visiting one of North Carolina’s numerous campgrounds for an evening or weekend. Pack the kids, turn off the cell phones, leave the laptop at home, and cherish the memories you make telling stories about the “days of old” around a campfire together. Pitch a tent at Hammocks Beach State Park in Swansboro, or drive down to the Carolina Beach State Park, and take a family walk through the coast’s shrub-filled forests. Get out the Frisbee or the football and invite other families at the campground to join you in a friendly flag football game. Don’t forget to take the camera along to capture the memories in the making.

For families who aren’t ready to commit to an overnight camping trip, use your yard

or living room to the best of your abilities.

If you have small children who won’t sleep anywhere but their bed, pitch a tent in the back yard and spend an evening enjoying the beautiful weather outside. Have a cookout, look at the stars, and play with flashlights. As your little ones’ eyes grow heavy, you have the luxury of taking them inside for bed and ensuring they will sleep through the night without the distractions of new surroundings.

If your family decides to celebrate the changing of the leaves another way, make a visit to a pumpkin patch for a great family photo-op. Let your little ones pick out their favorite pumpkin, take them home, and carve them. If the idea of carving pumpkins isn’t for you, try painting on them or coloring with permanent markers. Lay down plenty of newspaper in your kitchen floor and spend an hour together as a family as you prepare your pumpkins. This activity not only draws your family together, but gives you the opportunity to teach your children how things grow and let’s them experience different sights, sounds, textures and smells.

Families in search of a different experience can also seek out daytrips to local attractions, and ensure they utilize fall to its fullest advantage by visiting their local Department of Tourism for a list of upcoming events and attractions.

A new crop of teenagers is ready to take to the roads with their newly minted drivers’ licenses. Most teenagers are anxious to get behind the wheel because having a license and access to a car means freedom they may not have had before.

However, parents and guardians may be worried about these teens on the road because they lack the practice and experience of more advanced drivers. Continuing to educate young drivers about safety can help reduce the risk of accident.

Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that vehicular accidents account for 35 percent of all fatalities among people 15 to 20 years old.

drivers to engage in reckless behavior and/or distracted driving. It is often up to parents to reinforce the rules of the road and also consistently work with their children so that the teens can become better drivers.

Practice safer driving As with any activity, practice helps hone skills and teaches people through their own mistakes.

Driving is no exception. Mistakes on the road can be serious; therefore, it is best for teen drivers to practice driving in areas that are not heavily populated or full of traffic. Parents may want to establish rules that the teen is not able to drive solo until he or she passes the requirements set forth by Mom or Dad. Get the facts Talk to teens about road risks and how to stay safe.

Research the laws and statistics pertaining to teenage drivers and share that information. It may not always be well received, but there’s a good chance that some of the message will get through.

Set a good example According to a 2007 study from Students Against Destructive Decisions, the biggest influence on how teens drive is their parents. Almost two-thirds of high school teens say their parents talk on a cell phone while driving, almost half say their parents speed and almost onethird say their parents don’t wear a safety belt.

Parents should be mindful of their own behaviors when driving and the impression those behaviors are making on youngsters.

Establish rules Distracted driving is claiming more and more lives

each year. Many accidents are as the result of texting while driving. According to Distraction.org, in 2010, 3,092 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver and an estimated additional 416,000 w e r e i n -

in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. Text messaging creates a crash risk 23

times worse than driving while not distracted. Also, research has found that sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent -- at 55 mph -- of driving the length of an entire football field blind. Parents can implement rules, such as that cell phones are not allowed to be on while in the car or the phone should be stored in the back seat or trunk while a teen is driving. Parents also may want to set rules that multiple passengers (friends) are not allowed to ride in the car until the teen is more accustomed to driving.

Driving is an activity that offers freedom and mobility. It is also one that places a very large and potentially destructive piece of machinery into the hands of a driver. Education should be ongoing as teens learn to drive.

Mothers Unite to Protect Daughters in Bangladesh Imagine having a daughter—one that did well throughout elementary school and dreamed of becoming a dentist. Imagine that she just finished her freshman year of high schoolat the top of her class. She’s a natural leader.

Suddenly drops out of school to marry a man in his 20s, who demands payment for marrying your daughter. Now, her educational path is over. There will be no high school diploma, attending college or fulfilling her dream of becoming a dentist. The development of her mind and potential comes to a screeching halt.

Your daughter gets pregnant right away, but there are complications during the birth and the baby dies. Your daughter’s husband wants her to get pregnant again, right away.

Unfortunately, this is true life for 50 percent of the young girls in Bangladesh.

At the same age American teenagers are enjoying sportsand planning for college, the teenage girls in Bangladesh are unwillingly starting families and ending their education and career dreams.

What may look like a cultural difference is actually not. In Bangladesh, it’s illegal to get married before age 18. And with good reason—girls ages 15-19 are twice as likely to die during child birth as women ages 20-24.

Food for the Hungry works with mothers in Bangladesh to teach them of the importance keeping their daughters in school and not allowing them to marry early.

Mothers Unite to Educate Daughters in Bangladesh In a Hindu community called BograHorijon, cracked cement walls surround a labyrinth of dilapidated houses and narrow, dirty alleyways. A group of people called “untouchables” live there.

They are the lowest caste of the Hindu religion. Surrounded by Muslim communities on all sides, the people of Horijon are fenced off in more than physical ways.

Four years ago, only 12 out of more than 200 children attended school because public school teachers did not want the “untouch-

able” children in their classrooms. The adults living in this community,worked at low-income cleaning and sewage management jobs. The majority of women could not read.

Today, the mothers in this community are creating social change to save their daughters. FH works with these women to help them breakthe barriers that prevent their children from succeeding. The women are also being taught to read.

FH/Bangladesh Country Director Tim Danz said, “We focus on women, because they bring the most change in the family. They focus on the family and not just themselves. They are focused on their children and their development.”

For a woman named Sondsa, FH has changed her daughter’s future. Sondsa, dressed in a sari with her head covered, told about the group. “We decided we wouldn’t let the girls get married before age 18, because our children were dying.

We were able to make this decision because we were a group.”

As a widow, Sondsa struggled to provide for her children by doing cleaning jobs. She said she has better hopes for her daughter.

“I have a daughter that is older than 18, but her marriage wasn’t arranged. I couldn’t find a suitable groom for her. And if she doesn’t get married in a couple years— it’s ok. She’ll continue for a higher education.

If my daughter gets a higher education, then I can get a better groom for her. “ Since working with FH, the Horijon women have learned to read and write, learned business skills and health information. They have also come to understand their legal rights.

Today, as these women become more educated, they become more confident. As a group, they are creating change.

Upcoming Generations in Bangladesh These women, in partnership with Food for the Hungry, are creating great social change. While mothers are encouraging their children to stay in school, FH staff works with public schools to create moreopportunities.

Danz said breaking down the social isolation that these children are experiencing is one key to their future success. Through public schools, children create relationships with Muslim children. These relationships expand a child’s networking opportunities for future jobs. Without these relationships, Horijon children only have contacts in the cleaning and sewage industries.

As Food for the Hungry helps bridge social gaps and mothers become educated and encourage their children to stay in school—a great transformation takes place. Girls with dreams of having a career are free from early marriage and can finish their primary and secondary education.

This change happened within four years, because with the help of FH, mothers united to protect their children.

Mom’s publication dream becomes reality Story By Amy Binkley

Never give up on your dreams – even if they take longer than you expect.

When Alia Reese began her life as a military spouse, she didn’t know what she was getting into.

Years later, she’s assisting other military parents with first publication, “American Hero Books.”

“We moved to (Marine Corps Base) Camp Lejeune when my husband was assigned to the 22 (Marine Expeditionary Unit) and our daughter was only three weeks old,” Reese described. “It became clear very quickly he was going to be gone a lot.”

Reese found a simple solution to help her daughter remember who her daddy was while he was gone.

“From the very start, books were a part of her life,” Reese explained. “So each night before bed, I’d read to her and then I’d show her pictures of her daddy.

It became routine.”

Her daughter was able to tran-

sition what she saw in the pictures to the person standing in front of her.

“Military life was totally new to me, and I was trying to figure it out with an infant and a deployment schedule,” Reese said.

“But for her because of the pictures, they were never apart even though they actually were.”

She decided to write a simple book for military children highlighting what their active-duty parent does while they are at work, and called it “American Hero Books: My Daddy is a Marine.” She also made one tailored for mothers in the Marine Corps.

She designed the book in such a way that the story could be personalized by allowing kids to insert pictures of their parents into the pages.

“It’s already a working book when you get it,” Reese pointed out. “You personalize it as you can.

like that. Listen to what your kids want and like. Let them choose the pictures. With books you have to allow kids to explore.”

From concept to the delivery of her first publication, Reese’s journey took nearly a decade, but she wouldn’t change a thing.

“It was a lot to handle,” she admits. “I could have dropped it at any time, and the only one affected would be me. But it’s mine.

I got it done in my time.”

Reese has seen the popularity of her book grow, even getting into the hands of Vice President of the United States Joe Biden, but her goal is to make it available to every military family.

“I started the Heart Star Project for civilians who wanted to show their support,” she said. “They can purchase an ‘American Hero’ book which is then given directly to military families by military chaplains, the United through Reading program and by Heart Star Press at certain story time

events.”

Each book purchased through the Heart Star Project includes a sticker on the inside cover indicating who it was provided by.

Reese continues to work toward improvement and is currently moving with the other branches of the military to design books for their children.

Meet a Baby Animal OPOSSUM What animal scares the most people? It is the Virginia Opossum!

This animal is our only North American marsupial, which is an animal that carries its babies in its pouch. Most people know about the kangaroo that raises its babies in a pouch this way, but our NC opossum mama does the same thing. That makes them very unique and special.

Why do opossums go out of their way to scare people? Are they really mean and dangerous?

Do they have rabies?

Nearly all natural drinking water sources contain fluoride, but there are significant benefits attached to boosting the levels in the public water supply. Here are some facts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

The answer is NO! Any warm blooded mammal could get this disease, but since opossums have a cooler body temperature than most animals, they normally don’t get rabies. But you still would not want to get bitten by one.

So why does the opossum scare so many people when they find one in their back yard at night or one that has gotten into their trash can? The opossum deliberately tries to scare people so that they will leave it alone. They open

their mouth and show all of their many teeth, growling and hissing, and maybe even drooling. This makes them look really mean and scary, which is what they want you to believe. An opossum only wants to be left alone, and will either run away or fall over and “play possum” until it is safe to escape. As long as you don’t bother it, the animal will leave you alone. In fact, that is true for all wild animals and birds.

The reason so many people come into contact with opossums is because they usually leave a bowl of cat food out on their porch for their pet cat to eat. What else loves to eat cat food? Opossums do! And so do raccoons and foxes. These animals CAN have rabies, so you really do not want to attract them up close to your house. The gentle opossum just wants a quick snack to eat before he heads back out to look for bugs and berries in the woods. Many people call us to tell us that they have seen

their cat sitting right next to the opossum and they are both eating out of the same bowl and getting along just fine.

Sometimes the slow opossum does not make it safely across the street at night, and gets hit and killed. Sometimes a dog catches and kills an opossum in the yard. If you check the pouch of a mother opossum, you can find her babies alive inside the pouch. These babies do need to be brought to someone right away who is able to take care of them and feed them the proper opossum formula. They cannot be bottle fed like you can do with orphaned kittens. Instead, the baby opossums must have a very tiny tube put down into their stomach to feed them.

Tube-feeding takes a lot of special skill to do without hurting the babies, and the staff at Possumwood Acres Wildlife Sanctuary in Hubert (910-326-6432) and at Possumwood West in Richlands (910324-9967) knows how to safely do this.

So what do you do if you find an opossum in your trashcan eating your garbage? You just tip the can over to let him out and watch as he runs away as fast as he is able! Make sure you fasten the garbage can lid on tightly to keep him from returning. Opossums will eat anything that they find since they are omnivores, and food scraps are a treat for them.

Be sure to check with your local ordinances before having a bonfire and obtain a burn permit if necessary. For your convenience, you can obtain a burn permit from the N.C. Forest Service online at ncforestservice. gov/burn_permits/burn_permits_main. htm. They are free and could save you from fines of upwards to $25,000. If you are unsure if there is a burn ban or that you require a burn permit, the NCFS recommends contacting your local fire department or county ranger with any questions.

In North Carolina, keep in mind it is only legal to burn plant growth. That means cardboard, paper, household items and garbage are off-limits. Place your bonfire in an open area, protected from crosswind and away from overhanging branches, structures, rotten stumps or other ignitable material. Remove any burnable material within a 10-foot radius of the fire, including dry grass and leaves.

Always keep a shovel on hand to extinguish the flames, especially if water is not present.

To extinguish your fire safely, wait until the flames have died down and then douse it with water completely. Stir the embers with a shovel, and then douse it again. If water is not available, dirt may be used instead. Move rocks to ensure all coals are reached. Continue stirring and dousing the remains until they can be touched with your bare hand.

Never bury hot coals with dirt – they can easily reignite and pose a hazard to anyone who may unknowingly step on them.

Lastly, remember that wind conditions can change on a moments notice and

a fire can easily get out of hand. Never hesitate to call your local fire department with questions or, in case of emergencies call 911 if your bonfire becomes out of control.

By taking the proper precautions, staying legal and being prepared, you and your family will be able to enjoy sitting around the warm flames of a bonfire.

Trickor-treat safety tips

E

very year children anxiously count down the days until they are able to put on their costumes and head out into the neighborhood in search of candy. Although Halloween is meant to be a fun occasion for the young and the old alike, it can also be unsafe.

Costumes may impair a child’s vision and motor function. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says that studies indicate Halloween is in the top three among holidays that produce the most visits to hospital emergency rooms. Finger and hand injuries account for 17.6 percent of injuries, and children ages 10 to 14 sustain the greatest proportion of Halloween injuries. Trips and falls also account for a high number of injuries.

There are also a good deal of children who become injured before Halloween arrives, many of whom sustain lacerations when carving pumpkins.

To make Halloween a safe holiday, children and adults can heed these suggestions.

Wear comfortable shoes Although kids might want to wear shoes that match the

costume, shoes that fit well and are comfortable are a safer bet. This will help prevent tripping and falling over cumbersome shoes. It also reduces the risk of developing blisters and discomfort when walking from home to home.

Go In groups Children should not be allowed to go out in search of candy alone. Going in a group means that someone can get help if need be. Also, there is safety in numbers. Predators won’t view a child as an easy target if he or she is with fellow trick-or-treaters.

Be visible Since daylight saving time begins shortly after Halloween, there are fewer hours of daylight for trick-or-treating.

When Halloween falls on a weekday, children have to wait until after school to venture out, and it can quickly become dark.

Therefore, make sure that children are equipped with flashlights and put reflective tape on their costumes so they will be more visible to fellow pedestrians and motorists.

Stick to the sidewalks Children should stay on sidewalks and cross the street

only at established crosswalks.

Do not enter homes Unless a child is with an adult and the home is owned by a trusted friend, kids should not enter homes for treats.

Avoid flames A costume can easily catch on fire, so it is best to steer clear of candles, luminaries and lit pumpkins.

Bring water Costumes can become hot and uncomfortable, especially when worn for long periods of time. Be sure children have water to rehydrate themselves.

Accessorize safely Select flexible swords and knives if they are accompanying a costume.

Avoid rigid items that can cause injuries.

Examine Candy Before kids have their first bite, parents should inspect candy wrappers to determine if there has been any tampering. Also, avoid homemade treats from homes unless you know the people who prepared the items.

Donovan Mouton knows what it takes to make a true athlete. Sacrifice. Guts. Humility. He has all that and more.

Mouton is a Special Olympics swimmer who is all too familiar with the methods of a true athlete.

He practices for multiple hours, sweating through fatigue and taking big gulps of air before diving back underneath the water’s surface.

Mouton is a member of the North Carolina delegation of athletes who competed at the Special Olympics in Puerto Rico in Sept. Mouton competed in three aquatic events during the Special Olympics, including a relay race with his three teammates, Jessica Martinez, Joshua Gomez and Courtney Quinn.

For Mouton, Martinez, Gomez and Quinn, the Special Olympics were nothing to joke about. As official athletes, they were boarded and cared for in Puerto Rico, and expected to be on their best behavior, focused on their events. Being offered the chance to represent their state was a rare and honorable opportunity – one the four athletes didn’t take for granted.

“I want to win a gold medal,” stated Mouton before the trip.

For the parents of these athletes, though, the opportunity to travel to Puerto Rico was even more special. In a world where stereotypes and cruel words fall far too often on the ears of children affected by disabilities, the chance to shine is never sidestepped.

Mouton’s mother never raised him to be limited by his Down syndrome. Like many other parents, she made a promise to raise him in a way that enabled him to do whatever he wanted. Under her guidance, Donovan started a job as a Recreational attendant at the Stone Bay Recreation Center. When he decided he wanted to be like Olympic athlete Michael Phelps, she was standing right behind him as a mom and a coach.

Other team parents have similar stories of watching their children break stereotypes.

After completing her Bachelor’s degree, Dr. Halley attended four years of dental school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She then completed an additional three year residency in order to become a pediatric dentist.

Dr. Brian Talley graduated Cum Laude with a B.S. in Biology from the University of Mississippi in 1997. He received his D.M.D from the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry in 2002 and was subsequently commissioned as an Officer in the United States Public Health Service. Assigned to the Indian Health Service, Dr. Talley was first stationed on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Northwest Montana in 2002. He then transferred to the Southern Ute Indian Reservation in Southwest Colorado in 2005. After six and one half years with the Indian

Health Service, Dr. Talley was honorably discharged. He then practiced general dentistry in Colorado and Mississippi for one and one half years. In 2010, Dr. Talley began his advanced training in pediatric dentistry at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Upon completion of his residency in June 2012, Dr. Talley now joins Halley White Pediatric Dentistry in Jacksonville and Wilmington.

This specialized training gives Dr. Halley and Dr. Talley the skills necessary to treat children, infants, adolescents and children with special needs. Dr. Halley is certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Limited Exams Your child may have been examined by or treatment may have started with another dentist. There are special situations when, for a variety of reasons, children are referred to us for evaluation and possible treatment by Dr. Halley. It is our practice to arrange a limited

exam (consultation) to determine which treatment option is best for your child. We schedule these as an initial visit for the doctors to meet you and your child, complete an exam and review x-rays.

This appointment gives your child an opportunity to gain a sense of comfort and trust with Dr. Halley, Dr. Talley and their team. We will schedule treatment for another day after all your questions have been answered.

Infant Oral Exam The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association recommends the first dental examination for your child occur around age one or within six months of the eruption of the first teeth. At the first exam, the following will be discussed: feeding practices, recommended cleaning routines for oral hygiene, teething and eruption patterns, pacifier and thumb sucking habits, use of fluoride, family dental history

and dental safety issues for your child. She will brush your child’s teeth with a toothbrush, complete a dental exam and apply a fluoride as a preventative measure.

One of our treatment rooms is designed specifically for young children to complete these kneeto-knee exams.

School Age Child Dr. Halley and Dr. Talley will carefully monitor growth and development changes as your child transitions from primary teeth to a full adult dentition. A dental prophylaxis, fluoride treatment and appropriate radiographs along with a comprehensive examination will help Dr. Halley, Dr. Talley and staff to individualize recommendations for oral hygiene at home. We will work with your child to assist them with gradually taking responsibility for their own oral health through an understanding of dental disease, oral hygiene, and the role of diet as it relates to their overall health.

Infant Oral Exam The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association recommends the first dental examination for your child occur around age one or within six months of the eruption of the first teeth. At the first exam Dr. Halley will discuss the following: feeding practices, recommended cleaning routines for oral hygiene, teething and eruption patterns, pacifier and thumb sucking habits, use of fluoride, family dental history and dental safety issues for your child. She will brush your child’s teeth with a toothbrush, complete a dental exam and apply a fluoride as a preventative measure. One of our treatment rooms is designed specifically for young children to complete these knee-to-knee exams.

Expecting the Unexpected story by Emily Hanke

Wow, I am SO glad that is over with!

Once you get to the hospital, get checked in, hooked up to all the machines, poked and prodded by doctors & nurses, you start to realize this isn’t going to be as quick and wonderful as the shows on television. There are no commercial breaks in labor.

It all started when I left my desk and decided to take a walk to K-Mart, right next to the office. I know there have been many changes with my body since becoming pregnant, but I had never had any problems controlling my bladder.

I waddled back to the office and upon visiting the restroom, I knew something was off. Did I really just pee on myself? I took care of my business as best I could and walked out to inform my co-workers my maternity leave would probably be starting soon. I couldn’t ask for a better crowd to work with. They drove me to the hospital, brought me the bags I packed for the hospital (which I had left in all the chaos), and visited and called after it was all over.

After 18 ½ hours, some Pitocin, an

epidural, and an unknown amount of morphine, Cora Lynn Hanke was born. I spent three of those hours pushing with everything I had, but she is a stubborn child! She must have gotten that from her father… Ha ha! I didn’t really feel much pain after receiving the assorted medicines and I’m sure my husband was thankful for that. Even the sweetest, most caring women are often portrayed as vicious shrieking banshees in the delivery room. I won’t say it was all roses, though.

I was on the brink of giving up after about the first two hours of pushing, but I think my experience overall was pretty good.

Cora has amazed me since before she was born. I couldn’t believe how much she would kick and occasionally we would sit in the office and watch as she rolled around inside my belly. At just four days old during her newborn appointment, she rolled over from her stomach to her back. She continued to amaze me when she made such a horrific scene while grocery shopping that people offered to put my groceries on the conveyer belt and push the cart for me just so I could try to

hush her piercing screams.

I dreaded leaving her at day care that very first day back to work. I told myself I wouldn’t cry and I did put up a valiant effort, but I would be lying if I said my throat didn’t tighten and my eyes didn’t well up with tears.

The hard part is over with and I can’t wait to see how she grows and what her personality is like. Right now she eats, sleeps, poops, and occasionally stares at me, so it’s not terribly exciting. She is the spitting image of her father, but I hope some of my traits show up eventually.

Only time will tell!

Choosing a family Although dogs and cats will continue battle to hold the top spot as favorite pet, as a society we are pet-lovers regardless of whether those pets meow or bark. Statistics from the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association show that roughly 65 percent of American families have a pet at home -- and the numbers keep growing.

Those who are looking to add a furry companion to the family and are leaning toward a dog may have questions as to whether there are certain breeds that are a better fit. Breed alone does not dictate a dog’s demeanor. Every dog is unique, and how a puppy spent its formative months can be just as influential on the dog’s behavior as its breed.

There are some breeds that are thought of as family dogs because they are patient, calm and not easily provoked. But no dog is perfect, and it often takes working together as a family to develop a sense of trust.

Labrador retriever Labrador retrievers are one of the more popular dog breeds, especially among families.

Although it is thought to be a placid dog, a Lab is a member of the working class of canines and will need to be well exercised so the dog behaves well. Otherwise, the dog may be too boisterous and mischievous inside the home.

Collie Ever since “Lassie” warmed the hearts of viewers, collies have been viewed as loyal family dogs. Collies were bred for working, but they will eagerly herd children as well as livestock. Collies are generally gentle but active.

Cairn terrier An active small breed, the Cairn is a tough little cookie. The dog will have the energy to keep up with children, but it may be better in homes with older children because of the Cairn’s diminutive size and the risk of rough handling.

Pug This dog is generally affectionate, loveable and eventempered. Pugs love being part of the family and can be playful companions. They also love to nap on your lap; just be prepared for a little snoring.

Many dogs can become well-mannered members of a family. To increase the chances of getting a stable, balanced dog of good temperament, select one that comes from a quality breeder or a respected animal shelter and socialize the dog as early as possible.

How to floss more effectively

D

entists frequently advise patents to floss more often. Flossing is the key to preventing tartar buildup at the gum line and to reduce bleeding between teeth from enflamed gum tissue. Still, many overlook the benefits of flossing or simply do not know how to floss effectively.

The purpose of flossing is to remove food particles that become lodged in places a toothbrush cannot reach, such as under the gum line and between the teeth. Flossing should not take the place of brushing. Instead, use flossing in conjunction with brushing.

To floss more effectively, find a floss product that is easy to use and comfortable. Floss comes in nylon or multifilament varieties, as well as PFTE or monofilament floss. There also are floss brushes and single-use floss sticks that can facilitate flossing and cleaning teeth. Floss that’s comfortable makes flossing more enjoyable.

Otherwise, you may put off flossing if it is cumbersome or difficult.

To make the most of flossing, employ the proper technique.

If you have teeth that have tight contact points, you probably will want to use a monofilament floss that will not shred or break apart. Others may be able to work with a nylon floss.

tween the teeth. Still other floss have fluoride already on them to help prevent cavities.

To begin flossing correctly, start with a piece of floss about 18 inches in length. Wind the excess floss around your middle fingers and keep about 2 inches handy between thumb and index finger for use between the teeth.

Use a gentle sawing motion between the teeth to work the floss along the natural curve of the teeth and also where each tooth meets the gum line.

Do not snap the floss against the gums. Doing so can cause trauma to the tissue.

Angle the floss so it forms a “C” shape and hugs the tooth.

Slide the floss up and down each tooth and make sure it gently goes a little below the gum line. Repeat on the opposite side of each tooth as well.

As you floss each tooth, release clean floss from your fingers so you have a fresh area for cleaning the next tooth.

Follow up flossing with brushing to remove any errant bits of food and plaque. Then rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash. It is adviseable to floss twice a day before brushing. However, once a day will be sufficient and should be reserved for before bed.

If using flossing aides, follow the same general techniques, but use a new aide when the one you’re using becomes soiled or damaged.

Halloween’s world TRADITIONs Halloween dates back thousands of years to ancient Celts and Europeans. Although Halloween is now largely associated with the celebrations that take place across much of North America, where 65 percent of Americans decorate their homes and places of business in the Halloween spirit, Halloween is celebrated in various ways around the globe.

England In the past, Brits tossed objects such as stones, vegetables and nuts into a bonfire to frighten away the spirits. These symbolic sacrifices also were used as a form of fortune-telling. If a pebble thrown into the flames at night was no longer visible in the

morning, then it was believed that the person who tossed the pebble would not survive another year. Halloween fell out of favor after the Protestant Reformation spread through the country.

However, in recent years some have begun to adopt the American tradition of trick-or-treating.

Hong Kong A Halloween-type festival in Hong Kong is known as “Yue Lan,” which is the festival of the hungry ghosts. It is believed that, during this time, spirits roam the world for 24 hours.

France Halloween is considered an American holiday by most French and was relatively unknown before 1996.

Ireland Ireland is thought to be the birthplace of Halloween, and many of the same traditions of old are still practiced today. In addition to costumes and treats, individuals may play an applebobbing game called “snapapple,” where participants have to try to take a bite of an apple suspended on a string. Children also play tricks on neighbors, including “knock-a-dolly,” which is essentially a variation on “ring-and-run.”

Spanish-speaking nations Many Spanish-speaking nations celebrate “El Dia de los Muertos.” It is supposed to be a joyous event where people

remember friends and family members who have died. Candles and incense are burned to help the departed find his or her way home.

Austria Some people will leave bread, water and a lighted lamp on the table on Halloween night before going to bed. It was once believed that such items would welcome the dead souls back to Earth on a night Austrians considered to be full of strong cosmic energies.

Halloween is alive and well around the world. Perhaps this year North American families will want to incorporate some global traditions into their standard Halloween plans.

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

3 to 4 links Italian sausage 4 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium-size eggplant, peeled and cut into a 3/4-inch dice 2 small zucchini, halved and sliced 1 large onion, quartered, thinly sliced 1 medium-size green bell pepper, halved, seeded, and sliced 2 to 3 garlic cloves, minced 2 cups canned diced tomatoes 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon tomato paste Salt and pepper 2 tablespoons chopped fresh Italian parsley 3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil

Bring a medium-size pot of water to a boil. Puncture the sausage links in several places, then cook them at a low boil until they’re no longer pink in the center, about 14 minutes. Transfer the links to a plate to cool, then slice them into 1/4-inch-thick rounds.

Over medium-high heat, warm 3 tablespoons of the olive oil in a large, deep skillet or Dutch oven. Add the eggplant and zucchini and sauté them, stirring often, until they are lightly browned but not soft, about 7 minutes. Transfer the vegetables to a plate.

In the same skillet over medium heat, warm the remaining olive oil. Add the onion and bell pepper and sauté them for 3 minutes. Stir in the garlic and sliced sausage and sauté, stirring often, for 3 minutes more. Stir in the tomatoes, eggplant, and zucchini.

Partially cover the skillet and gently simmer the ratatouille for 5 minutes. Add the tomato paste, along with salt and pepper to taste, and simmer 5 minutes more. Stir in the parsley and half of the basil. Serve hot, sprinkled with the remaining basil.

Story by Emily Hanke Meet Wyatt Chesser. He is your average 3 month old, learning and exploring the world around him. There is something special that sets Wyatt apart from everyone else, though: He has an extra copy of chromosome 21.

This either full or partial extra chromosome is a characteristic of Down syndrome. This genetic condition often results in degrees of low muscle tone, small stature, an upward slant to the eyes, and a single deep crease across the center of the palm, however, sometimes none of these traits are present.

Wyatt’s mom, Cassy, received a prenatal diagnosis of her son’s condition. “I cried my eyes out for like three days,” she recalled.

“When you first get the diagnosis, it’s really scary.” According to the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) approximately 6,000 babies (one in 691) are born in the United States each year, making it the most common genetic condition.

The Chesser family has found a variety of resources in the area to help them learn more about Down syndrome and reach out to other families affected by the condition. Being a Marine Corps family, they are able to take advantage of a special service called the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP).

The EFMP is designed to support service members with special medical or educational assistance of family members.

The program covers everything from advocacy to housing & relocation and can even offer respite care to family members

of those with special needs.

Another great source of local support and information Cassy found is the Down Syndrome Network of Onslow and Carteret Counties (DSNOCC). They host social gatherings for the entire family and even plan events like “Mom’s Night Out” each month.

This year, they are helping NDSS host Jacksonville’s first annual Buddy Walk on October 27, 2012 at the Jacksonville Commons.

The Buddy Walk was started to raise awareness and celebrate the accomplishments of our local community members with Down syndrome.

Like Cassy, any parent that learns their baby is affected by Down syndrome may be scared and worried, but she states “It’s not going to be nearly as bad as you think it is,” She knows there are many recent advances in the medical field and early intervention programs and occupational therapy can help those with the condition learn essential skills.

Cassy stresses that there is a huge misperception about Down syndrome. Many would think that Wyatt’s condition and the normal challenges that come with life as a military family would be overwhelming.

“It’s not difficult, it’s not hard.

If anything it’s made our life better.” Cassy says that they have a few more doctors appointments to go to, but other than that Wyatt is no different than other children. *Information obtained from the National Down Syndrome Society at www.ndss.org

Like her teammates, Martinez refuses to let her abilities get the best of her.

She took her diagnosis of Down syndrome and ran with it, using it to her full advantage. As a young woman in her mid-twenties, Martinez holds down a job at French Creek, has a boyfriend, received her high school diploma, was cast in a film and still made time to train for the Special Olympics.

“Kids like (Mouton) and Jessica may have an extra chromosome, but it doesn’t change the fact they can do most things,” said Martinez’s mother. “They rock that extra chromosome.”

For the youngest member of the swim team, Joshua Gomez’s spark and conviction makes him a valuable team asset. His strong kick and quick arms make him a powerful freestyle swimmer.

His

willingness to listen to his coaches and parents keep him from doing too much, but push him to his personal best at every practice.

“I’m ready,” Gomez announced to his coach during a break between training sessions at the Marine Corps Base Camp Johnson pool, where the team trains. “Are you ready?”

Quinn, who spent 17 years on the swim team, and competed in the freestyle and relay events in Puerto Rico, may be deaf, but refuses to let it slow her down. For two and a half hours each practice, Quinn swims laps in the 50-meter pool, making sure her mom keeps track of her time.

Regardless of their performance at the Special Olympics, these athletes know who they are. They are strong and able. Fierce competitors, tearing down walls and breaking stereotypes with no regard for anybody who says they can’t.

“They’re incredible,” said Mouton’s mother.

“They’re going above what we thought would ever be a reality. We’re proud to be their parents and coaches. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Sweet treats for Halloween

Halloween is a time for costumes and candy. Americans spend roughly $6 billion per year on Halloween candy. After Christmas, Halloween is the country's second-biggest commercial holiday.

Although many people like the convenience of buying bags of pre-made candy, they will not have control over the amount of sugar or the other ingredients that are being put into these confections. This Halloween, celebrants may want to make their own sweet treats to hand out or share at Halloween festivities.

Chocolate lollipops All it takes is a mold, heating device and some chocolate candy melts to make delicious and eyecatching homemade lollipops. A visit to the craft store will probably yield all of the ingredients you need.

Some kits feature squirt bottles that can be filled with chocolate, heated in the microwave and then easily squirted into the candy molds.

Cake pops A revolution in dessert, cake pops can be

made in two ways. The first method is baking a cake and then crumbling it up into a bowl. Then a container of cake frosting is added, making the mixture moldable. The mixture is then formed into balls, which are put on lollipop sticks and dipped into melted chocolate. The second cake pop method is to purchase pans or special waffle-iron-type devices that turn batter into balls while cooking. Then the cake balls are put on sticks and covered in frosting or chocolate.

Candied fruit Caramel-covered apples are an autumn tradition, but you also can dip bananas into chocolate or pieces of pineapple for a pseudo-healthy treat.

Chocolate bark Create a healthy and delicious mixture of ingredients by melting dark chocolate and adding in nuts, dried cranberries, raisins, sunflower seeds, or anything else you can think off. Pour the mixture on a piece of waxed paper and allow to harden in the refrigerator. Then cut into chunks and enjoy.

Good Sportsmanship Through Humility There is nothing more humbling than losing. Do you remember that old cliché, “Quitters never win, and winners never quit?” A great sport requires attitude, self-discipline and determination.

Attitude is certainly an important trait in any kind of sport.

No one likes a sore loser, so congratulate a winner. Find out how they trained for the event, you never know, it may work for you. Just because that person won the match doesn’t mean they will win them all. It only means they were the best at the time. You have to be willing to forget about the mistakes of the past and press on to the things in the future.

It takes self-discipline to be a good sportsman. Invest more time in the improvement of yourself; not the criticism of others. Winners get what they expect in the long run.

No matter what side you’re on, be a great sport about it.

Everyone wants to win, but there always has to be a loser.

Think of it this way, the loser might be the one that will be on top the next time. The loser makes the extra effort to work longer and harder for the next match. I don’t want to teach people to loose and be good at it or be proud of it. My intent is to change the thought that if you enter a contest whether a winner or a loser, your participation will offer an opportunity to showcase your talent or to test yourself at a higher level.

When all is said and done in life, when you’re sitting on your rocking chair with your friends, it won’t matter who you beat at a tournament or a game, it won’t matter how big and bad you were back in the day, all that will matter is the example you have set for those around you by doing your personal best.

The relationships you make, the stories that you have to share and the experience you offer is what matters most. If someone gets promoted before you, honor their accomplishments.

There is no need to tear someone down for doing their best or for getting rewarded for their efforts. Remember the real win is to constantly improve oneself.

You are your biggest competitor. There will always be someone bigger, younger or stronger. The important thing is to better yourself. Increase your limits, your personal best and improve on the qualities of your character. It does not matter in the course of life, if you won a medal or a trophy it is important how you live your life and how you cherish the relationships that you have established.

Things that we win because of our physical abilities will quickly fade. Our body will get weaker as we get older. You won’t see a sixty year old in the next Olympics. Be of great character the rest will come.

Be a winner in life and strive for excellence in everything you do. Be your best!

A Fun Thanksgiving Craft for the Kids Kids can make several of these paper cup turkeys so the family can use them as place cards for the big Thanksgiving feast!

What you’ll need: • Paper or foam cup (8.5 oz) • Acrylic paint in fall colors (brown, tan, orange, red, green, yellow, etc.)

• Large pom-pom for head (brown, yellow, red, orange, etc.)

• Small foam heart for gobbler (to contrast with color of head) • Small foam triangle (orange or yellow) • 2 small wiggle eyes • 3” x 2” piece of orange construction paper • 1 sheet of white construction paper • White craft glue • Scissors How to make it: 1. Place cup upside down on work surface and paint brown

2. To make the feathers, paint the white construction paper with several fall colors, crisscrossing the colors as you go. Let dry.

3. Cut feathers out in one large piece, should be shaped similar to a hand or crown. Cut the tips of each feather into a point.

4. Apply glue to the bottom portion of the feathers and press onto the bottom of the cup. Hold in place for a minute or so to let the glue grab.

5. Place foam heart upside down so that the bumps are facing downward.

Glue the foam triangle, point down, onto the upside down heart--the upper points of the triangle will be hanging over the edge. This is the beak and gobbler.

6. Glue the pom-pom to the top of the paper cup.

7. Glue the wiggle eyes and the beak

a n d gobbler to the head.

8. Cut two feet from the orange construction paper and glue to the bottom of the cup.

Tips: 9. Instead of throwing away the paper that you use to protect your work surface from paint, add more color to it to make the feathers!

10. The feathers can be simplified by using a piece of brown, orange, or red construction paper.

11. Make these even more fancy by using actual feathers and by writing the name of your dinner guests on a piece of paper and gluing to the front of each turkey.

You are a military spouse with an unusual situation while your husband is deployed or is currently stationed thousands of miles away. You have contacted the Red Cross, Navy Relief, Family Services or the Family Readiness Officer with no results.

Where do you go to find help or encouragement as a military family when there is no other resource to turn to?

Diane LeBlanc, the program director for Operation Compassion knows what that is like.

She served as a Marine for 8 years and was a military spouse for 26 years. In that time she had a few situations where after exhausting all her resources had no one else to turn to for assistance.

The New Bern District of the United Methodist Church started operation Compassion in December of 2009. Dennis

Goodwin, who was the District Superintendent at that time, was also a Chaplain in the US Army.

With a very generous grant from Duke Endowment, Operation Compassion was formed in order to provide support to all military families in eastern North Carolina. Diane was appointed as the Program Director in December of 2010.

The purpose of the organization is to provide a concentrated focus on the unique needs and issues that military families are faced with. In today’s world of long deployments, frequent training exercises, and a transient lifestyle, military families need an organization in the civilian sector more than ever that understand what they are going through and can provide the support they need and deserve.

Operation Compassion is fully committed to supporting all Ma-

rines, Sailors, Coast Guard and their families as they continue to faithfully serve our country and sacrifice for our freedom.

Since the inception of the program, Operation Compassion has been instrumental in providing all levels of support to military families from cutting grass to providing support to pregnant women and encouragement to children whose Marine or Sailor was deployed.

Additionally, they assisted a church near Cherry Point with starting a Mother’s Morning Out Program. They are also working on a Baby Shower for Expectant Mom’s whose husbands are currently deployed and a military family weekend retreat at Camp Don Lee. The work is accomplished through funding provided by Duke Endowment as well as the North Carolina Conference of

the United Methodist Church.

Additionally they have received assistance from local businesses in the community and the support of volunteers.

Operation Compassion is partnered with the North Carolina Military Spouses Group and is currently working with Down East Cyclists in their ongoing “Trips For Kids” project, which focuses on introducing children to the experience of Mountain Biking.

Operation Compassion’s deepest passion is to continually provide support and encouragement to military families in all the seasons of their life, cheering them on as they keep the home fires burning and become solidly connected to their military community. Halloween Noise Makers

Recycle and turn concentrated juice cans into noise makers for the little ghouls this Halloween.

These noise makers are a great craft to do with kids before Halloween.

Supplies Tacky Glu For each: 6-oz. juice can with lid, washed and dried Drill with 3/8” bit 10” length 3/8” diameter dowel Assorted nuts and bolts Newspaper Paintbrushes – ¼” flat, fine-tip Acrylic paints: orange, black, yellow, green, white 1 yard each 1/8” wide satin ribbon: white, orange, black For cat noisemaker: small star rubber stamp (or see designer tip below to make your own) Waxed paper Cosmetic sponge Instructions For each, center and drill hole for dowel through 1 side of can. Dip 1 end of dowel into glue and push into hole until end of dowel touches opposite side of can. Apply additional glue to dowel on outside of can. Let dry.

Put handful of assorted nuts and bolts inside can.

Glue newspaper pieces to cover entire can, overlapping pieces slightly. Let dry. Using photo as guide, paint entire can and dowel desired base color.

For cat noisemaker: t r a n s f e r pattern to can and paint 1 cat on each side of can. Let dry.

Pour small puddle of yellow paint onto waxed paper. Dip sponge into paint, dabbing excess off onto waxed paper. Dab sponge onto star stamp and press onto can. Repeat to stamp stars on can where desired. Let dry. Use toothpick to outline each star with dots of white paint. Let dry.

For ghost noisemaker: transfer patterns to can and paint 1 ghost on each side of can and 1 jack-o-lantern on each end of can. Let dry. Use toothpick to outline each ghost with dots of orange paint. Let dry. Use end of paintbrush to paint dots around each end of can with yellow. Let dry.

For each, handling all ribbon lengths as 1, tie ribbons in bow around dowel just below can.

Tie knots in streamers.
