I sat on my bathroom toilet in shock, heart pounding almost out of my chest as tears welled up in my eyes. “There’s no way I’m pregnant,” I thought to myself, except there was a way and as unexpected as it was, it was true.

Pregnant women throughout the military may have had a similar reaction to mine or something completely different after finding out there is life growing inside them, but one thing remains the same for us all…we are pregnant, and we are in the military, which means fitness is still a huge part of our lives.

I don’t know about others, but one of the first things I thought of was how much my body was going to change. I did research on

how much weight I might gain, how easy it is to lose baby weight and how I should be eating.

Luckily, my base was ahead of the game. At my first women’s health appointment I was given a list of resources to see what diet to follow, how much weight I should gain, where and when to take a prenatal nutrition class and my profile for pregnancy.

One of the top resources I was given was information on the new prenatal fitness class held at the Shellbank Gym. With my pregnancy profile, I was able to attend my first class.

Recently, the Air Combat Command Surgeon General directorate released new guidance called Conditioning/Reconditioning (Fitness) Program for Airmen During and After Pregnancy. This is for female Airmen during all stages of pregnancy and after giving birth.

“We recognized that we were falling short in providing optimized health and fitness for our pregnant Airmen,” said Gen. Mike Holmes, commander of Air Combat Command. “Our goal is simple: provide our Airmen with research-based options they can use to support pregnancy and postpartum conditioning and reconditioning.”

This guidance applies to all ACC bases where fitness centers are required to be staffed with certified pregnancy trainers and must host classes at least three times a week.

Not only will this new program encourage pregnant and postpartum women to attend fitness classes and keep up with their standards, but it’s a great way to meet other mothers and socialize outside of the job.

Luckily I found out I was pregnant after Langley Air Force Base had already implemented these classes. This s a huge step for women all over ACC. Personally, the fitness classes have been very beneficial. The instructor allows us to go at our

own pace, since every pregnancy is different and every woman’s pre-pregnancy workout routine is different. It challenges me, but also gives me the chance to take a break if needed.

We also have access to websites that educate us on nutritional, emotional and other materials to help us through pregnancy. The hospital also offers different inperson classes for expectant and postpartum mothers.

Not only have I made new friendships through my prenatal fitness classes, but I’m glad I have a way to have some kind of routine while pregnant. This will make getting back into full fitness way easier once my baby boy is born.

“The body does change throughout the pregnancy process,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Rosemary Haley, Command Nurse and Chief of Medical Operations for ACC’s SG directorate. “We’re hoping that people see some value and we have a return on investment and that the Air Force takes a look at this and pushes it even further.”

Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape specialists are experts on how to survive in the most remote and hostile environments in the world.

Along with teaching water survival courses, SERE specialists at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, train aircrew personnel on an array of skills from making a basic shelter to escaping an active pursuant.

“This training helps our personnel at high risk of isolation increase their odds of survival in the case of an isolating event,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Stephen Drakes, 192nd Operations Support Squadron, Virginia Air National Guard SERE non-commissioned officer in charge.

This specific training is given to pilots and aircrew personnel who may be flying over hostile territory.

The beginning part of the training starts with classroom training and progresses to hands-on, in the field skills using everything that would be in their survival vest and inside their seat when they fly in an aircraft.

“They practice using flares, which are one of the signaling devices they would have available and can be used in all facets of personnel recovery; in the ocean, desert, Arctic, day or night,” said Tech.

Sgt. Justin Bender, 1st Operation Support Squadron, SERE operations non-commissioned officer in charge. “These work especially well for helicopters or any close support that may be flying, so they can land or do a hoist rescue.”

Participants use survival radios that are the actual communication network they would have in the event of an isolating situation.

The survival radios work by connecting to a satellite and then sending signals to a base station where personnel type mes-

sages and instructions back to the isolated individuals.

“It gives them confidence that the system works,” Drakes said. “It’s also a good opportunity for them to refresh their muscle memory while using the radios and equipment.”

Drakes and Bender explained that because of time constraints and the nature of the training, some situations that isolated personnel could encounter are not able to be practiced, but they are covered beforehand.

“We talk a lot about evasion and how to maintain their basic needs during the phases of an evasion,” Drakes said. “We practice evasion movements, camouflaging, taking accountability of what you have on your person and building a shelter or hideout to rest, drink water, get on the radio and meet other needs.”

After participants demonstrate that they understand how to work the communication and signaling devices, they are dropped off in a simulated hostile environment to practice the evasion skills they have learned.

“Volunteers simulate hostile aggressors

who search for the pilots or other participants, to create a realistic training environment,” Drakes said. “A lot of moving pieces go into a training like this.”

While evading hostile forces and making contact with friendly forces, the participants are required to locate a cache site and find shelter in a location directed by messages received.

“Because of the requirements here, we are able to invest more time on the actual scenario, requiring them to do more tasks by going through the woods and urban areas,” Bender said. “They are really able to focus on using the tools they would have in that sort of environment.”

This training is imperative for personnel at high risk of isolation, so they can return safely from any type of survival situation.

It’s also a requirement for pilots to be combat mission ready.

Through preparation, planning and training, the SERE specialists here at Langley are able to continue the mission of the base and the Air Force by ensuring aircrew personnel are prepared and trained to survive in the event that a mission doesn’t go as planned.

People who received or purchased a new smartphone, tablet or device with the capabilities of downloading mobile applications during the holiday season should be aware of what apps are being downloaded and the security concerns associated with such devices.

People should be observant of where and who develops the apps and the permissions that are embedded in the background, regardless of who mobile apps came from, like the Department of Defense, the Department of the Army or a commercial

company, The Army University mobile division at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., works with Department of Defense and Department of the Army to develop, vet and fix apps.

“We support Army mobile,” said Matt MacLaughlin, Mobile Division, Army Distributed Learning Program, Army University chief. “We have an expert team set in place here where application requirements, development, sustainment, archiving, and distribution can take place."

The employees working at the mobile division in the Army University have three main areas of focus: they develop applications from start to finish, fix contracted products

for units Army-wide and evaluate live contracted products, as well as publishing those applications safely.

“Device safety is typically the focus of mobile,” MacLaughlin said. “There are those considerations, but there are also the considerations of accuracy of information within the app. For example, a [operational toolset] calculator. If [the developer] doesn’t take the time to properly make sure the calculations within the app are correct before it is developed, that could [hurt] Airmen, Soldiers and Marines as easily as the cybersecurity aspect of it.”

All U.S. Army mobile apps are free to download on commercial markets and approved mobile Army locations and follow a strict procedure and process that was developed in 2013.

MacLaughlin and his team develop three types of applications for the

Army: informative, gaming and tools.

The Army has a branding that identifies the apps for every application developed and vetted.

“Just because you can download a mobile application and use it immediately, doesn’t necessarily mean you should,” MacLaughlin said. “If you are going to use something personally make sure you know what you are using. Ensure it’s the real app and not a cloned app from some other entity. This simple extra step can save you from embarrassing cyber issues later."

Service members should be aware when accepting the user terms for applications of how the location services work, and look through the terms to know what they are allowing the developers to access on the device.

DOD relies heavily on allies and partners, McConville said, noting that he has personally met with 75 chiefs of staff from nations around the world over the course of the last year.

There aren’t enough U.S. soldiers to be in all places in the world at one time where they’re needed, he said.

In order to have well-trained partners who can provide their own security, the Army has recently stood up security force assistance brigades, he said. They train and advise partner nations.

When they are all stood up there will be five active security force assistance brigades and one in the Army National Guard, he said.

In the area of communications, a future integrated command and control network will not only link sensor to shooters across the DOD, but will also be integrated with systems allies and partners use, he said.

The soldier is the Army’s most important and potent weapon, McConville said. Having the right person in the right job is paramount. In order to do this, the Army is finalizing a new personnel system that looks at more than just two variables which the current system uses: rank and job.

This new system will consider 25 variables that include a range of knowledge, skills and even soldier preference.

Perhaps the most important and influential persons in the Army are battalion commanders, he said. A good commander not only knows how to command well, but also influences whether or not soldiers reenlist due to the command climate that commander brings.

Therefore, the Army has developed a new command assessment program for these commanders to

ensure only the best are selected.

He said physical fitness, leadership, peer and subordinate reviews are some of the selection variables.

Also, noncommissioned officers are no longer selected based solely on time in grade. Now, only the most qualified get promoted, he said.

Innovation will require a lot of experimentation and testing of leapahead technology systems, McConville said.

Among two of the Army’s priorities are long-range precision fires, and air and missile defense, he said.

A near-peer competitor like Russia or China could make it difficult to enter an area through their advanced standoff weaponry, he said.

In order to overcome that obstacle, the Army is experimenting with advanced weapons that use directed energy and microwaves, he said, adding that in two to three years, he expects the Army to begin fielding new precision strike missiles and extended-range cannons.

Another way to penetrate an enemy’s defenses, he said, is with aircraft that have much greater range and speed than the current fleet.

Some of those aircraft could even be unmanned, he said.

Unmanned ground vehicles are also being developed. It would make sense to have them take the lead in areas that are heavily mined or full of improvised explosive devices, he said.

Also, future tanks might just have one person in the vehicle instead of four. Artificial intelligence and robotics could take the place of some of the crew.

and support philanthropy through a program that is employee-focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all.

The CFC conducts roughly two hundred fundraising campaigns throughout the country and raises millions of dollars every year, making it the world’s largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign.

Donations made during the CFC window will go towards eligible non-

profit organizations that help to provide health and human service benefits worldwide.

“Let’s show some love to those who need it most,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Clinton Ross, 633rd Air Base Wing commander.

Ross went on to thank everybody for all they did to support those in need and contribute to the CFC campaign.

CAC ID Services

The MPF is rolling out an initiative to improve the availability of CAC ID card services! Starting Monday, October 21, the ID card office will be open by appointment from 4:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. The appointments will be booked via the MILSUITE application (exactly the same way as a PT test), and be available in 30 min increments. The only customers we will be servicing during these appointments will be CAC card holders (no Dependents). Walk in customers will be seen as time allows.

Basic ID card reminders: For all new CAC cards, members require 2 forms of ID. Driver’s licenses need to be current and not expired (despite the issuing state law). Please ensure for lost/stolen cards, the member has a letter from the Security Forces desk, and 2 forms of ID. For any member not in uniform, the member must still meet all AFI 36-2903 grooming standards. Shaving waivers will be accepted if presented at the time of appointment.

Did You Know…New Transition Assistance Program Curriculum & Requirements

There are new requirements/changes coming to the Congressionally Mandated Transition Assistance Program (TAP) beginning 1 October 2019. Members who have completed the Pre-separation Counseling and signed the e-form by 30 September 2019 are grandfathered in the FY19 curriculum.

If the e-form is not signed by 30 September 2019, service members must re-accomplish the Pre-separation Counseling and complete applicable new requirements (FY20 curriculum). For a detailed explanation of what those requirements are, per individual, please call the Airman & Family Readiness Center (A&FRC), 764-3990/94 for guidance.
