Air Force to solicit 75th birthday theme ideas

In preparation for its 75th anniversary, Sept. 18, 2022, the Air Force is soliciting birthday theme ideas from Total Force Airmen and civilians. Every year in September, the Department of the Air Force dedicates a theme to celebrate the Air Force’s birthday.

Some of the past themes include, “Frontiers of Blue… This is 72!”, ”Focusing on heritage, warfighting capability and innovation,” “American Airman… Wingman, Leader, Warrior,” and “Breaking Barriers!”

Concepts for the 75th birthday theme should consider inclusiveness of multi-domain operations, capture Airmen’s innovation and reflect the Air Force’s heritage over the last 75 years. Considered themes should be short, concise, catchy and memorable (e.g. the 70th anniversary theme was “Breaking Barriers”). Submissions must also be in good taste.

All submissions and voting will take place through the IdeaScale website.

The submission and voting timeline is as follows: ■ The competition submission period will be from Jan. 6-31.

■ The voting window will be from Feb. 24 – March 6.

The best qualified submissions will be considered and sent to the chief of staff of the Air Force, the vice chief of staff of the Air Force, the Air Force director of staff and the chief master sergeant of the Air Force for the final decision.

The winner will be announced around April 1, 2020.

The winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to the Air Force Association’s Air, Space & Cyber Conference in September 2022, to attend the 75th Air Force birthday celebration and meet the CSAF and CMSAF. Airmen and civilians with ideas should submit them online at https://usaf.ideascalegov.com/a/ ideas/recent/campaigns/101, when the submission window opens.

Esper: Iran has 'Big Off Ramp' to avoid further conflict

The United States does not want a war with Iran, and it’s not leaving Iraq, Defense Secretary Dr. Mark T. Esper said.

“As we defend our people and interests, let me reiterate, the U.S. is not seeking a war with Iran,” Esper said during a Pentagon news conference today. “But we are prepared to finish one. We are seeking a diplomatic solution. But first this will require Iran to de-escalate. It will require the regime to come to the table with the goal of preventing further bloodshed. And it will require them to cease their malign activities throughout the region.”

There’s a clear-cut way to avoid further conflict between the two nations, the secretary told reporters.

“There is a big off ramp sitting in front of Tehran right now,” Esper said.

“That is to de-escalate, to message us that they want to sit down and talk -without precondition, by the way -- to the U.S. about a better way forward, about a way forward which would constitute a new mode of behavior by Iran where they behave more like a normal country.”

Tensions have flared since the United States launched an airstrike in Iraq that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’Quds Force.

Esper said the protection of American personnel and partners remains a

top priority of the DOD, as does maintaining readiness to conduct operations to respond to Iranian aggression.

“Since the strike, I have spoken with the commanders on the ground to ensure they have the resources they need to protect their people and prepare for any contingencies,” Esper said. “As a result, we have increased our force protection postures across the region and will continue to reposition and bolster our forces as necessary to protect our people, our interests and our facilities.”

Within Iraq, Esper said, the risk of retaliation by Iran has not deterred continuing U.S efforts to secure the enduring defeat of ISIS. “We have received widespread support for our actions from our allies and partners in the region, and we will continue to work with them to protect our gains against ISIS,” he said. “I have been in constant communication with our counterparts, and I’ve called upon them to stand with us in the defense of coalition forces in Iraq. Working through NATO, the defeat-ISIS coalition, and with our partners on the ground, we continue to bolster Iraqi institutions to ensure the lasting defeat of ISIS.” The secretary also told reporters the United States is not leaving Iraq, “Our policy is unchanged,” he said. “We are not leaving Iraq ... We are in Iraq, and we are there to support Iraqi forces and the Iraqi government [to] become a strong, independent and prosperous country.”

U.S. continues to deploy, reposition troops in Middle East, Esper says

By Terri Moon Cronk The United States continues to deploy and reposition troops throughout the region of Iraq and Iran to bolster U.S. security and force protection and to be prepared for any contingency, Defense Secretary Dr. Mark T. Esper said.

“Over the last several days, I’ve had many conversations with our partners and allies about the situation in Iraq and the region,” the secretary told reporters at an impromptu Pentagon news conference today.

“It’s been uniform support for our position and our actions, and I continue to convey to them the importance we continue to place on the defeatISIS position,” Esper said of the U.S. drone attack that killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Islamic

Revolutionary Guard Corps’elite Quds Force, one of the most powerful figures in the region.

Deterring Iran from its bad behavior and standing up to that behavior has been going on for 40-plus years, the secretary added. “And … we remain prepared for any contingency with regard to Iran,” he said.

The U.S. message is that the ball is in Iran’s court, and the United States encourages Iran to de-escalate the situation, Esper said, adding that the United States is open to discussing issues and having a more normal relationship with Iran. “But if Iran chooses to go the other path, we are prepared to deal with that and will respond forcefully,” he said.

ing the U.S. commitment to Iraq to defeat ISIS and noting the escalation of attacks by Iranian and proxy groups attacking U.S. forces.In recent months, the secretary said, nearly a dozen such attacks took place, escalating in size, scale and types of weapons, including one attack that killed an American.

Esper said the Iranians fired 31 rockets that weren’t meant to harass, but were designed to kill people and destroy things. “Then we had the siege of the embassy,” he added.

He called the strike that killed the Quds Force leader a matter of self-defense carried out to protect Americans.

Open for innovation

Solving problems begins with an idea. Having resources to nurture those ideas and explore them can grow new, innovative creations to further the Air Force’s mission.

The 1st Fighter Wing at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, now has an innovation lab where Airmen can experiment, build and explore new ideas.

U.S. Air Force Col. David Lopez, 1st Fighter Wing commander, attended the opening ceremony Dec. 17, 2019 at JBLE. “This is about providing Airmen the resources they need to bring their ideas to fruition,” said U.S. Air Force Major Brian Bascuzzi, chief of innovation for the 1 FW. “This is the ultimate sandbox for them to come up with these prototypes.”

proud to open the lab to the Airmen of the 1 FW and JBLE as a whole.

“We’re excited to have gotten to this point, to have a dedicated space that helps people get out of their workspaces and think outside the box,” Bascuzzi said. “Now that it is open for good, I’m excited to see what people come up with.”

Innovation or “spark” cells are the Air Force’s way of providing resources and space for Airmen to use their ingenuity to creatively solve problems.

Tech. Sgt. Daniel Caban, 1 FW, created a removable intake cover for the U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor, making it the first major innovation created at JBLE with the spark cell.

“The leadership here made the innovation lab happen, my product was just one of the first ideas,” Caban said.

The lab is equipped with 3D printers, wires, tools and many other items useful for creating prototypes.

“This is about empowering Airmen to create products that will improve everyday operations within the Air Force,” Bascuzzi said.

According to Bascuzzi, the lab has already received interest from many Airmen and they hope to increase participation by offering workshops for various processes such as 3D scanning.

“The readiness enhancement of products, such as Caban’s, impacts the mission tremendously,” Bascuzzi said. “That is exactly the type of project that we were hoping for when we kicked off the innovation cell.”

The 1 FW hopes that Airmen will use the lab to bring their ideas to life to be able to improve processes within the workplace and mission lethality.

VaANG recruiters, retention bring home regional awards

Virginia Air National Guard recruiting and retention team won three regional awards in November 2019 at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia.

The accomplishment came the same time the 192nd Wing, the sole wing of the VaANG, reached 100 percent end strength.

As a team, they won Patriot Team of the Year, Region IV. The award recognizes the top wing recruiting and retention team, taking into account job performance, outreach programs, Airman development and community

involvement. Region IV includes Air National Guard wings from Delaware, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland and Virginia.

“It feels really good,” said Senior Master Sgt. Rick Dumas, VaANG state production superintendent. “There has been a lot of growth since the last time we won an award like this.”

In addition to the team award, Dumas won State Production Superintendent of the Year, and Staff Sgt. Jonquil Willard, 192nd Maintenance Squadron munitions control specialist, won Unit Career Advisor of the Year, Region IV. The UCA position is a volunteer additional duty which assists the wing retention efforts by regularly

engaging Airmen about their future plans within the military.

“Between sergeant Hopkins, our retention manager, and sergeant Willard, they were pretty proactive and successful,” said Dumas.

The team got together for a group photo in front of an F-22 Raptor on the flightline at JBLE. For some, it was their first time up close and personal with the jets. Master Sgt. Lukas Hopkins, VaANG retention office manager, used to work as a maintainer prior to joining the recruiting team.

“I just feel grateful for my peers, grateful for the wing, grateful for the support we’ve been able to get,” said Hopkins. “It took a collective effort, not only with accessions. It goes to the success of the recruiters … as well as the retention side of the house too.”

Reaching 100 percent end strength in a wing is rare, in part because new missions add manpower requirements and the target for 100 percent grows.

has added a Chemical, Bilogical, Radiological, Nuclear, and high-yield Explosive Enhanced Response Force Package mission, a Cyberspace Operation Squadron and a Civil Engineer Squadron. The recruiters may face their biggest challenge yet as the Air Force has identified JBLE Langley as the candidate base for the F-22 formal training unit and its associated T-38 training aircraft in March of 2018.

“We stand ready, together with the First Fighter Wing, to successfully transition the Raptor FTU to Langley while continuing to excel in our Total Force partnerships and our F-22 combat readiness,” said Col. Mark D. Piper, 192nd Wing commander. “We rely on our recruiters and I know they are up to the challenge.”

After their group photo, Dumas addressed the team and acknowledged the shared feeling of pride and accomplishment.

“Hats off to all of you,” said Dumas. “Now, we’ll go compete at the national level … against all the other regions in the country.”

Basic ID card reminders: For all new CAC cards, members require 2 forms of ID. Driver’s licenses need to be current and not expired (despite the issuing state law).

Please ensure for lost/stolen cards, the member has a letter from the Security Forces desk, and 2 forms of ID. For any member not in uniform, the member must still meet all AFI 36-2903 grooming standards. Shaving waivers will be accepted if presented at the time of appointment.

Did You Know…New Transition Assistance Program Curriculum & Requirements

There are new requirements/changes coming to the Congressionally Mandated Transition Assistance Program (TAP) beginning 1 October 2019. Members who have completed the Pre-separation Counseling and signed the e-form by 30 September 2019 are grandfathered in the FY19 curriculum.

If the e-form is not signed by 30 September 2019, service members must re-accomplish the Pre-separation Counseling and complete applicable new requirements (FY20 curriculum). For a detailed explanation of what those requirements are, per individual, please call the Airman & Family Readiness Center (A&FRC), 764-3990/ 94 for guidance.
