Airmen transitioning from military to civilian life now have new Transition Assistance Program curriculum and requirements that must be completed prior to separating.

The United States Congress has mandated the new TAP guidance will take effect beginning on Oct. 1, 2019.

Members who have completed the pre-separation counseling and have been signed off on the electronic form by Sept. 30, 2019 are grandfathered in the 2019 fiscal year curriculum.

If members fail to receive a signed electronic form by the deadline, they must re-accomplish the Pre-separation Counseling and complete applicable all new requirements in the FY20 curriculum.

The goal of TAP is to provide in-

formation, tools and training to ensure service members and their spouses are prepared for the next step in civilian life; whether pursuing additional education, finding a career or starting their own business.

Conservation law enforcement patrols, protects JBLE

Rivers, creeks and estuaries trace the landscape of Fort Eustis and it’s up to a select few to patrol the 27 miles worth of shoreline in order to protect the installation.

“Fort Eustis is over 7,900 acres,” said Police Officer Sgt. Christopher Griffin, 733rd Security Forces Squadron Game Warden Section conservation law enforcement officer. “The post is surrounded by water--we are actually a peninsula.”

Due to the dense forested areas and the expansive waterways, some parts of the installation are difficult to access.

“We patrol through the post’s training areas to ensure no one is there without authorized access to that site and along the parameters [of the installation] where regular patrols have a hard time reaching,” said Police Officer Sgt. Bryan Sheehan, 733rd SFS Game Warden Section conservation law enforcement officer.

Unlike other career fields, conservation law enforcement officer’s duties are partially contingent upon the time of year.

“Depending on the season our routines vary, right now it’s mainly fishing--so my weekly operations would be checking the authorized and unauthorized fishing locations,” Sheehan explained.

With certain military activities posing a threat to those who trespass into unauthorized locations, the public’s safety becomes a top priority for the post’s conservation law enforcement officers.

“A lot of people don’t understand that with being an active military installation that certain military operations occur,” Griffin stated. “Not only on the water, but also on the land. Just because you do not hear rifle fire, does not mean those ranges aren’t in use. If you have boats entering into the creeks and the streams [near Fort Eustis], they could easily be struck by an errant round.”

Considering the post’s long military

history, other hazards present themselves in the form of military artifacts.

“This post was established in 1918,” Griffin remarked. “Originally the installation was a bombing range--unexploded ordnances can be found in certain areas on the post from World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Relic hunters attempt to enter onto the installation to go to Civil War sites, colonial sites and Native American sites,” Griffin added. “They don’t understand the dangers of going into those areas. Also, the ordnances they try to collect have their own inherent dangers.”

The conservation law enforcement officers’ primary mission is to educate the base population about the rules and regulations regarding hunting, fishing and environmental laws.

“I would like the public to know the game wardens at Fort Eustis are here for you,” Griffin noted. “We are here for [your] education more than anything.

We are not here to write people tickets, however that is a part of the education process if it comes to that. Although, we prefer you ask us any questions you may have before you get yourself into trouble.”

With the posts’ active hunting and fishing program, safety protocols are important to be aware of and to follow.

“On Fort Eustis we have deer, turkey, small game and water fowl hunting, which incorporates the use of various weapons such as bows and shotguns,” Sheehan said. “If someone was to access an area where active hunting is going on, especially a Soldier or Airman who is wearing camouflage, they may not be visible to the hunter, which creates a potentially dangerous situation.”

The city of Hampton, Virginia, honored those lives lost in the terrorist attacks on 9/11 with the 18th annual “Reading of The Names” event at Gosnold Hope Park, Sept. 11.

The event brought together U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 30th Intelligence Squadron, civic leaders and local residents to take part in honoring those heroes and additionally those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“This event is representing those first responders and lives that were lost on 9/11 and our brothers in arms who have passed away, paying that ultimate sacrifice,” said U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Daniel, 30th IS. “It is

important for our Airmen to come and show their respect during the time the community has dedicated to honoring all of those lost.”

Each volunteer is given a sheet of paper with the names of the fallen and read them aloud around the memorial trees in the park. Each reader has a solemn duty to read the names they have been provided, to ensure those who have been lost are not forgotten.

The event continues a tradition that dates back to “Days of Remembrance and Hope” ceremonies held from December 11, 2001 to September 11, 2014.

“I think it’s important for our young Airmen to understand that it wasn’t just a tragic day on its own; it was a fundamental shift in the reality of how

we live our lives,” Gerald said. “The memories of 9/11 for me are still fresh in my mind, but the impact it has on my life and others continues to this day.”

Army Family Action Plan Conference

Army Family Action Plan (AFAP) Conference AFAP is a grassroots process that allows Soldiers and families to raise key readiness and well-being issues to the attention of Army leadership. To submit an issue or volunteer to participate in the conference, please call 878-3638 for details. The conference will be Sept. 24-26, 9 am - 5 pm.

Spaatz Drive, located north of the Hospital, between the Base Exchange and the north entrance to the Hospital, will be closed for 45 days. Both lanes will be blocked to install new electrical vaults and underground conduit, to support the Hospital Addition and Central Utility Plant construction.

Newcomers Orientation

The Airman and Family Readiness Center will host the Langley Newcomers Orientation Briefing from 7:30 a.m.

The orientation is part of the Relocation Program which provides service members, civilians and their families with valuable information to assist them during PCS moves. Child Watch Care Provider Position Available

The Fort Eustis Regimental Memorial Chapel, is accepting applications for an experienced Child Watch Care Provider. The contractor shall perform services necessary to support the total Fort Eustis Chapel Community Child Watch Care function at the RMC and other locations in support of the chapel programs. Applicants must provide a resume showing experience as a Child Watch Care Provider for children ages 8 weeks to 11 years old. Contract will be awarded based on "best value" to the government.

Applicants can pick up the Request for Proposal, Statement of Work, and packet of bid documents from the RMC. Three Letters of Recommendation that contain contact information to verify experience are required. Applications must be submitted to the chapel by 3:00 p.m. on September 20, 2019. An interview by applicants with the Chapel Tithes and Offering Fund Contracting Officer is also required and should be scheduled on or before September 27. Did You Know… New Transition Assistance Program Curriculum & Requirements There are new requirements/changes coming to the Congressionally Mandated Transition Assistance Program (TAP) beginning 1 October 2019. Members who have completed the Pre-separation Counseling and signed the e-form by 30 September 2019 are grandfathered in the FY19 curriculum.

If the e-form is not signed by 30 September 2019, service members must reaccomplish the Pre-separation Counseling and complete applicable new requirements (FY20 curriculum). For a detailed explanation of what those requirements are, per individual, please call the Airman & Family Readiness Center (A&FRC), 764-3990/94 for guidance.
