Be a hero: Donate blood

I get it; needles make some people squeamish. But what if I told you that facing your trypanophobia, the fear of medical procedures involving injection, could save up to three lives? Would you go for it?

That’s what donating blood can do.

According to the American Red Cross, a blood transfusion is needed every two seconds. One in seven people admitted to hospitals need blood. Your donation could be the difference between life and death for someone in need. That someone might be a loved one.

In 2009 my brother Cedric was diagnosed with H1N1, a strain of swine flu. He developed double pneumonia in his lungs and began developing an infection in his liver.

He was airlifted from one hospital to another one to get him on an oscillator to filter his blood. Cedric needed three blood transfusions.

After more than a month in the intensive care unit, he survived. Had he not received blood, he would not be here today.

Because of my brother, three days after my 18th birthday, I donated blood for the first time. I’ve now donated more than a dozen times.

My wife, Becca, has an autoimmune disorder that fluctuates the amount of white blood cells her body has. In 2017, her WBC count and blood platelet count dropped to a dangerously low level, causing her dizziness, blurred vision and headaches. Normal WBC counts range from 4,000 per microliter to 11,000 per microliter. Her level was 3,800 per microliter. I brought her to the emergency room where they were able to diagnose the low counts and get her the plasma and platelets she needed to live. Had plasma and platelets not been available, she may have died.

If those personal stories aren’t enough, perhaps some facts will sway you.

According to the Armed Services Blood Program, a pint of blood on average will save three lives. Yes, three lives. You have the power to help a car accident victim go home to their family.[DA1] You have the power to help a service member wounded in combat receive a proper homecoming from their deployment. You have the power to help a premature infant survive to live a long, healthy life. You can affect all this change, just by giving a pint of your blood.

Donating blood doesn’t just have a positive effect on others, it has one on you as well.

According to Rasmussen College, regularly donating blood can reveal potential health problems, reduce harmful iron stones and lower your risk of suffering a heart attack or developing cancer. When you donate, your blood is checked for diseases, viruses and potential problems.

The thing is, blood isn’t something that can be synthetically

manufactured. It’s something that needs to be donated. According to the American Red Cross, only 37 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, but less than 10 percent actually donate. To break that down further, according to the 2018 U.S. Census Bureau estimate, the U.S. population was over 327 million. That means roughly 121 million are eligible to donate and less than 32 million actually do.

So now you want to donate and help save lives! The Armed Services Blood Program holds blood drives around the U.S. and overseas installations. Go to www.militarydonor.com to find a drive near you and schedule an appointment.

Through the Armed Services Blood Program, your donation will go directly to a service member in need.

Awareness is the first step

June is National Men’s Health Month and in conjunction with Men’s Health Week from June 10-16, it is important for the men of Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, to be aware of the possible health problems they may face.

National Men’s Health Month and week are meant to bring awareness to the preventable health problems found in men and boys and how they can affect U.S. Air Force Airmen, U.S. Army Soldiers, Department of Defense civilians, retirees and their families.

whether it’s at work or at home,” said Tech. Sgt. James Miller, 633rd Aerospace Medicine Squadron independent duty medical technician. “Being physically fit and mentally fit prepares us against our adversaries as

well as strengthens our team bond because we know we [will be able] to rely on one another.”

The issues men face can start off minor, but if they go unchecked they can develop into more severe problems.

3 Some of the problems men face are heart disease, cholesterol problems, colon cancer and especially, prostate and testicular cancer.

“We all have brothers, fathers, sons or uncles and they need to be aware of the specific conditions related to men,” said Colette Palmer, McDonald Army Health Center family nurse practitioner. “It’s a big impact on your health if we do early detection.”

According to Palmer and Miller, some things men can do to help prevent these issues include maintaining a healthy diet, exercise at least 150 minutes a week, quit smoking, reduce alcohol intake and individuals around 50 years old should schedule annual health screenings.

“Early detection is actually the key to any of these illnesses,” said Miller.

“The earlier you can find it, the earlier you can treat the problem and possibly get rid of it before it can develop into something much worse.”

While it is important to have annual screenings and exams – the first step starts with the individual. Speak with a primary care provider to answer any questions on how to spot early signs.

Becoming a military father

Becoming a father can be the scariest and most beautiful moment at the same time. Be that, you adopt a child or are the paternal figure in a child’s life.

For me, and plenty of other parents in the military, we not only have to worry about all of the factors that are involved in the Armed Forces, but also those small gut feelings deep down that make you wonder if you will be the father or parent the child deserves.

Before I was married to my beautiful wife, Alicia, I always had two goals in my life when it came to being a father. The first was being able to support my wife if she were not to have a job. Secondly, I wanted to be able to support a child and what expenses come along with that. When both could be achieved I knew I would be ready ... or so I thought.

We’re pregnant The day of Super Bowl LII, my wife woke up not feeling well and just uneasy. With her not feeling like herself, I suggested we take a pregnancy test that morning. By this point in the “baby game” we had been trying for six months and for those families who try and try again, pregnancy tests become more and more heartbreaking.

The thoughts of “is it my fault?” start looming in your head. Did I do everything I could do to make this one a success? But just like all the other times, we were prepared to be let down once again.

After Alicia had taken the test, she left it in the restroom on the sink ledge and we had truthfully lost track of time of when to check the results.

With being let down so many times as I said before, you just find things to keep you busy to hopefully blunt the blow of a negative result.

Could it be true?! What do those lines mean? Could this be the one?

I grab the test and run out of the restroom, searching for my wife in the house. Once I found her, I just smiled and handed her the test and yelled.

“WE ARE PREGNANT!” For the next nine months my wife grew a bun in the oven, every appointment a stressful encounter that books can barely prepare you for. Seeing the face of a little person that we would be responsible for on the 3-D sonogram, changed our lives in an instant.

So many questions were yet to be answered;: what color to paint the nursery, how many diapers do you need, what kind of car seat and stroller, boy or girl, what toys to buy, what bags to pack for the hospital and most importantly, what will the name be.

The day she was born Every father or soon-to-be parent has a very important role in getting their spouse to the location where they plan to give birth.

You can be prepared, like we were, and have bags pre-packed and already loaded in the car or you can run frantically around the house

while your wife screams from the front door.

Some key points to remember though, are as follows: ■ In that moment, your soul focus in life is to be there for your spouse.

■ Have your bags ready to go, there will be a time when you can return home and grab anything you forgot.

■ Things are going to happen and you have to accept that not everything will go as planned.

■ Bring a flashlight.

■ Know that if things are not right and you need a nurse, pull the emergency handle.

■ Get rest – you are going to need it.

On October 25, 2018 our beautiful baby girl was welcomed into a completely dark world. That night my wife was forced to give birth by flashlight after a power outage in the hospital.

However, that didn’t put a damper on the most amazing moment of our lives. Getting to hold her for the first time was timeless. It was then, in that moment, that I knew I was going to be the best father she could have been blessed with.

At 7 months old, she is developing so fast and would rather walk than crawl. As she grows, our life grows,

times begin to change and thoughts of what comes next for our little one fill our thoughts. Would I be a successful father?

Be back around the way I do not know when, but a deployment will come one day while she is still little. Deep down I hope that when that time comes, I will have given her enough daddy-daughter time to suffice while I am away.

That is why when Lacey was born, I made a promise to her that I would spend one day or more a month with just her. ‘Daddy-Daughter Day’ as I call it, a day of pure us time; a day for me to just shower her with the love she deserves. And although every single day I cherish my daughter, that one day allows me to focus solely on her and ignore all of the chaos that surrounds me.

That is why I challenge each father figure out there to schedule just one day a month to spend with your little one. Make it a priority in your life to spend that day with your child and do whatever they want to do. Our first seven months have gone so fast and I am sure she will be 18 before we know it.

CSM MICHAEL GRINSTON SELECTED AS 16TH SERGEANT MAJOR OF THE ARMY

Secretary of the Army Dr. Mark T. Esper and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley, announced today Command Sgt. Maj. Michael A. Grinston will assume responsibilities as the 16th sergeant major of the Army (SMA).

“I look forward to working with Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Grinston,” Esper said. “The Army is in the midst of a renaissance, and he is a great choice to carry on our readiness, modernization and reform efforts.”

Grinston currently serves as the senior enlisted leader for U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) – the U.S. Army’s largest command and

provider of expeditionary land forces. He is a combat veteran who has served in every leadership position from team leader to division command sergeant major.

His deployments include two tours each to Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring

Freedom, as well as Desert Shield, Desert Storm and to Kosovo. Grinston also served as the senior enlisted leader for the Army’s first deployment of a division headquarters, with 1st Infantry Division, in support of Operation Inherent Resolve from October 2014 to June 2015.

“Congratulations to Command Sgt. Maj. Grinston and his family,” Milley said. “He is a world class leader who stands out among our exceptional Noncommissioned Officer Corps. He is the right Noncommissioned Officer to lead our Army into the future.”

As the FORSCOM command sergeant major, Grinston played a key role in the development of training and preparation of combat units

as a globally responsive force as the Army simultaneously builds and sustains readiness to meet the needs of national defense. He will succeed Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel A. Dailey, who has served in that position since January 2015.

“Command Sgt. Maj. Grinston is the right leader,” Dailey said. “He possesses all of the character and leadership qualities necessary to lead our NCO Corps into the future, and he will continue to serve the best interests of our Soldiers, their families and the Army.”

The 16th SMA will serve as the Army chief of staff’s personal adviser on matters affecting the enlisted force.

The SMA recommends quality-of-life improvements to Army leadership and sits on numerous councils that make decisions affecting Army families. The sergeant major of the Army also routinely testifies before Congress on these issues. Additionally, Grinston will serve as the public face of the Army’s NCO Corps to the American people, in the media, and through business and community engagements.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to continue to serve the great Soldiers and families of the United States Army,” Grinston said.

Grinston will be sworn in as the 16th SMA during a ceremony at the Pentagon on Aug. 16, 2019.

Giving Old Glory a voice

Standing at a wooden podium, dress blues pressed and hands resting on the script in front of her, retired U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Deborah Rothwell took a deep breath.

“I am the flag of the United States of America,” she started. Her head held high, she emphasized each word with a flourish of her hands. “My name is Old Glory.”

A bona fide celebrity in military circles, Rothwell has been performing “Old Glory” at both military and civilian events since 2002.

It all started as a favor for a good friend’s retirement ceremony, where she read the poem with only a few days’ notice. Since then, Rothwell has performed “Old Glory” close to 500 times.

What makes Rothwell’s rendition so unique is not just her delivery, but the events she has woven into the stanzas.

“Anytime something significant [happens to] America, I try to make it a part of ‘Old Glory,’” she said. “I just want to keep that consciousness going. So we never forget. Especially for the fallen and their families.”

Rothwell retired from active duty in 2003, after serving in South Ko-

rea, Egypt, and the Pentagon. Most of her career, however, was spent at Langley Air Force Base.

“When I first started I never thought I would make it in that top three percent,” she said, shaking her head. “To get that rank, and being a female, and black female at that. That was just very rewarding for me.”

She remained at Langley following her military retirement, taking a civilian position with the 633rd Air Base Wing Inspector General’s office. She has since retired in the area for good.

“I get requests because most folks just know who I am, I don’t even have a website, you know what I mean?” she said with a laugh. “They just know who I am because I’ve been at Langley for so long.”

Despite keeping a busy schedule, conducting eight performances in June alone, this isn’t work for her. It’s all about giving back to the community and making events special for families, she said.

“It makes me feel good, doing something special for the family,” Rothwell said. “But I’m just a part of their day.

So when my part is over, I’m out. It’s not about me.”

Rothwell goes out of her way to avoid taking attention away from the person being honored, oftentimes slipping out the back at the end of the ceremony.

“I don’t think she has

a certain radius or limits she would travel to perform,” retired Col. Vivian Dennis, a friend of Rothwell’s, said. “That’s a testament to how memorable she wants the occasion to be for the families.”

She dedicates her performances to her late husband, Leon Rothwell Sr., who passed away in October 2015.

Both served as enlisted Airmen, he was a retired senior master sergeant, they were married 35 years.

“He used to go with me when I would perform, stand in the back, and listen to what the audience was saying,” she said. “He was a big part of all this. So I think of him a lot when I’m up there.”

She read “Old Glory” at her husband’s funeral, a decision that she made in the moment.

“I could just hear him saying, ‘If you could do it for everybody else why couldn’t you do it for me?” she said. “So I was standing there and realized, I can do this.”

Despite performing for 17 years, Rothwell doesn’t see herself stopping anytime soon, and she has no shortage of requests.

“When people tell me they are retiring the first thing I say is, ‘Do you want something to make you cry?’” said retired Tech Sgt. James Kotrch, who has known Rothwell for more than 10 years. “We have people getting ready to retire next year already calling to get her on the calendar.”

U.S. Army Advanced Individual Training students assigned to the 222nd Aviation Regiment, 1st Aviation Battalion, 128th Aviation Brigade spend more than six months studying the Apache AH-64’s various systems and components during the AH-64 Armament/Electrical/Avionic Systems Repairer course at Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

Preventative maintenance and routine inspections are crucial elements of the repairer’s duty since Army missions rely heavily on the safe operation of these helicopters. The Soldiers graduate the course with proficiency in weapons and sighting systems, fire control units, avionics and stabilization systems.

Throughout the course, students learn electrical theory, troubleshooting procedures, soldering techniques and electrical system maintenance in a classroom environment in conjunction with hands-on training in the field.

A healing touch: Veteran provides massage therapy to PTSD patients

Tucked away at the Shellbank Fitness Center is a soothing room filled with potted plants, soft lighting and a trickling waterfall, designed to create a relaxing atmosphere.

In this room, a new service is offered to Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, personnel who may need help relieving stressors caused by traumatic experiences, whether combat or non-combat related.

Retired U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Eduardo Duran Jr. decided to provide a different kind of service than the one he spent 17 years performing on active duty.

Now as a licensed massage therapist, he helps services members work through their stressors by connecting their minds back to their bodies through massage.

“Massage therapy can allow a person who has been in a traumatic experience, victimized or in constant exposure to high stress in any shape or form, to regain control of their environment and regain control of their feeling as they’re being touched by somebody else,” Duran said.

“That person is given the opportunity to control the pace and location of the touch, and by gaining that control it’s one more tool in their mind, body and spirit to be able to trust in themselves and possibly others. Massage can be part of a tool to help a person reach a level of mental health

that is improving the quality of their life.”

In 2018, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs announced the release of the Whole Health System, a personalized health plan that considers mental, spiritual, physical, emotional and environmental needs of veterans.

The program provides alternative therapies such as art therapy, battlefield acupuncture, tai chi, yoga and massage therapy to give veterans strategies and tools to cope.

“The VA’s Whole Health approach helps veterans live their lives to the fullest,” said VA Acting Secretary Robert Wilkie. “By developing a personal health plan that integrates many areas of their lives, Veterans can truly take charge of their well-being and improve their health all around.”

For individuals suffering from a traumatic experience, Duran harped on the importance of receiving massage therapy in conjunction with psychotherapy, behavioral or cognitive therapy.

According to Duran, massage therapy can be a doubleedged sword for post-traumatic stress victims if those individuals are not seeking outside help for their significant emotional or physical trauma.

“It’s so important that if there is massage therapy introduced to someone with post-traumatic stress disorder, brought forth by combat or sexual assault or just a random act of violence, it needs to be at the proper time in order to establish a sense of

trust,” said Duran. “The person who’s receiving the massage needs to feel safe and in control.”

Duran recommends anyone who is suffering from PTSD take their time when adding massage therapy to their treatment plan.

As someone who suffers from PTSD, Duran discovered the positive benefits of massage therapy.

After Duran returned from a tour in Iraq, he had difficulty sleeping, relaxing and was eventually diagnosed with PTSD. A friend recommended massage therapy to help him focus and engage in positive thinking.

Upon multiple attempts to have a positive massage experience, Duran finally found a therapist he felt comfortable with and trusted, and he continues to meet with her three years later. This experience also encouraged him to become a massage therapist.

“I kept looking for different ways to feel better,” Duran said. “I tried Mixed Martial Arts. I tried acupuncture. I’ve tried chiropractors. But what kept me searching was that

every time I tried something I was subconsciously taking bits and pieces of control back into my life. Out of all the chaos that my brain was going through, all the noise in my head, I had moments where I could actually stop it and have silence, even for just a moment.”

Now Duran wants to help service members who may be struggling with the same things by introducing them to the healing touch of massage therapy.

Whether clients are looking for someone to work on the same muscle for two hours or a full deep tissue massage in silence for 30 minutes, Duran wants his clients to know they are in complete control of their healing process.

“A good massage therapist understands that they are not in control,” Duran said. “I should not be giving you my opinion on what you should need. I can tell you what I feel and you tell me what you think. The biggest thing is trying to provide a safe environment and understanding it’s not the same for everybody.”

For Duran, he’s just happy

to be able to give back to the service members he felt helped him through the worst of times.

Although Duran’s services come with a fee, he noted he would reconsider charging a service member who has been diagnosed with PTSD and has talked with their mental health provider about adding massage therapy to their treatment.

He noted he’s available to provide not only massages but a listening ear. If individuals just have questions about a certain muscle or about his fight with PTSD, he’s available to answer them.

“We need to back each other up and remind each other we’re just human,” Duran said. “I’m here to help you, and I am a tool right now because I’m being used to help people. All I want is to help service members feel better.”

Healthy foods add spice to life

As part of its mission to deliver healthy food options to Airmen and families across the Air Force, the Air Force Services Center, in partnership with the Culinary Institute of America San Antonio, held its first techniques for healthy cooking class June 3-7 focusing on nonappropriated fund food and beverage chefs and cooks.

The class, for 16 NAF employees from across the Air Force, is designed to educate attendees on the benefits of healthy ingredients like plants and legumes, proper spicing and appropriate healthy cooking techniques.

Application for the certificate is open to retired and former service members, or next of kin in cases of deceased veterans, Defense Department officials said.

DOD tasked the Defense Threat Reduction Agency to manage the certificate program, because it already keeps a database of radi-

According to the DTRA website, during World War II, thousands of service members were involved in the secret program to build an atomic bomb – the same project that DTRA traces its roots back to -- known as the Manhattan Project. Thousands more were part of the U.S. occupation of Japan immediately following the dropping of two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Japan’s unconditional surrender. After the war ended, through decades of the Cold War, many more troops were involved in atmospheric and underground testing of nuclear weapons.

Authorized in the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2019, the AVSC is intended to recognize all veterans who were or could have been exposed to radiation during their service to the nation, the website says.

Atmospheric, underground testing

Potentially affected veterans include the original atomic veterans from atmospheric testing conducted from 1945 to 1962, in addition to underground testing conducted from 1951 to 1992.

Pharmacist Cough and Cold Clinic

Dependent and Retiree patients between the ages of 18 to 70 who are enrolled to USAF Langley Hospital can be seen at the 633 MDG Pharmacist Cough and Cold Walk-in Clinic. Patients should check in at the Family Health Clinic front desk and ask to be seen at the "Pharmacist Cough and Cold Clinic." Clinical Pharmacists will evaluate and, if needed, prescribe medications. Patients with the following symptoms cannot be seen in the Cough and Cold Clinic: patients having any symptoms of severe illness/disease such as shortness of breath/wheezing, active asthma attack, chest pain, coughing up blood, etc. Cough and Cold Clinic walk-in times are 8 to10 AM and1to 3 PM Monday-Friday.

Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA gate) changes

Security Forces personnel will no longer man the Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA Gate). Personnel will still have their credentials checked by guards at the main NASA gate, however, their credentials will not be checked again at the Durand Entry Control Facility. NASA guards will still man their side of the Durand Entry Control Facility and will only allow CAC holders (no dependent ID cards) to enter NASA property. Additionally, no commercial vehicles are allowed access to NASA property. The Durand Entry Control Facility hours are from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Manpower shortage impacts 633rd Medical Group services

The 633rd Medical Group strives to provide Trusted Care to all they serve, while supporting many deployed and home-station missions. Due to contract vacancies and multiple provider deployments/permanent changes of station during the coming months, it will take longer to receive appointments and have messages returned. In light of these staffing concerns, TRICARE will temporarily enroll only Active Duty service members and their family members. This action is being taken to ensure patients receive the care they deserve within the established standards. There will be no enrollment changes or action taken to any patients who are already enrolled at the 633rd Medical Group, regardless of category. Trespass Notice

The Langley small arms firing range, adjacent area and the bullet impact area to the rear of the range are off-limits to all personnel. The firing range maintains 24-hour operations, seven days a week and is not open for the use of privately owned weapons. Due to gunfire, trespassing in this area is illegal and dangerous. Military Tuition Assistance briefing

Prior to the first use of Military Tuition Assistance and after not using MilTA for one year or more, service members are required to attend an initial and refresher MilTA briefing to ensure rules, roles and user responsibilities are clearly understood. The briefings are conducted ona walk-in basis in room 123 at the Education Center every Tuesday at 9 a.m. and every Thursday at 2 p.m. For more information, contact the Education Center at 764-2962 or 633fss.fsde.eo@us.af.mil.

The Langley MPS Customer Service changed the servicing process of customers and the hours of operation due to a large increase of the servicing population.

■ Hours of operation: Monday – Tuesday & Thursday - Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4p.m.; Wednesday 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

■ Walk-in Hours: Monday – Friday 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.

■ CAC Only Hours: Monday – Tuesday & Thursday Friday 7:30 – 9:30 a.m.; Wednesday, no CAC only hours Personnel who need dependent ID cards should complete a DD Form 1172-2 and have it available for family members to be seen after 9:30 a.m. (during the walk-in hours or appointment time).
