Kathy Zerba, assistant for Col. Jeffrey M. Hewlett, Marine Corps Air Station New River commanding officer, won the 9th annual Administrative Professional of the Year award aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, April 24.

The Jacksonville-Onslow Chamber of Commerce recognized administrative professionals from across Onslow County who were nominated by their co-workers for their hard work and dedication.

Zerba said Hewlett nominated her for the award but did not tell her that she had won.

“She didn’t really like that I did something that she did not know about,” joked Hewlett.

“As an administrative professional working for the commanding officer of a military installation, she must be well-organized, innovative, capable of multi-tasking and dependable,” read Budda Howard, area executive for First Citizens Bank and presenter of awards at the ceremony.

There were 21 administrative professionals nominated for the award; 13 were from MCB Camp Lejeune and

Zerba was the only nominee from the air station.

“It was an honor to be nominated and an even bigger honor to win,” said Zerba. “I know many of the other people that were nominated. Being picked out of a group like that really means a lot.”

“Everyone knows Kathy and likes her because of how nice and professional she is,” said Hewlett.

Zerba said she normally manages the commanding officer’s schedule and plans many of the staff meetings that take place, along with whatever else may come her way.

“I could not do my job without her; she takes care of everything,” said Hewlett.

Hewlett commended Zerba on everything she does for the air station and jokingly said she runs the air station.

“She is not simply the commanding officer’s secretary.

She is a far more vital and pivotal part of the team that comprises the air station staff,” said Howard. “Her enthusiasm coupled with her drive to improve the commander’s staff and the air station as a whole is reflected in her work ethic.”

every administrative professional does so much to contribute to their workplace every day.

“She is simply the best employee I have ever had,” said Hewlett. “She is dedicated, loyal and nice. She shows phenomenal initiative and is very well deserving of the award.”

“A lot of men serve with honor; a lot of men come and go,” said Navy Lt. Chad C. McCain, Marine Corps Air Station New River chaplain. “Occasionally a new person emerges whose qualities are obvious, and so we give thanks to Sgt. Maj. Squires whose tour is complete. He is now going on to the first tee in the next course of his life.”

During the ceremony, Squires received the Legion of Merit from the president of the United States of America for his exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service while serving as the air station’s sergeant major from May 2010 to July 2012 in an unprecedented period of growth in the Marine Corps.

“I extend to you my personal thanks and the sincere appreciation of a grateful nation for your contribution of honorable service to our country,” wrote President Barack Obama in a message read aloud during the ceremony. “You have helped maintain the security of the nation during a critical time in its history with a devotion to duty and a spirit of sacrifice in keeping with the proud traditions of military service.”

since May 2010. Over the two years he served at New River, he made an impression on countless Marines, including Col. Jeffrey M. Hewlett, MCAS New River commanding officer.

“I have been blessed in my Marine Corps career to have four different sergeants major, but among those four great sergeants major, Squires has been the best,” said Hewlett.

“It is incredibly impressive what he has done in 30 years.

Above all, he is a leader and a warrior; he is a gunfighter.

Sergeant major, you are a titan in the Marine Corps.”

Squires shared a list of the top four priorities that got him this far in his life.

“I have always said this,” said Squires. “God, country, Corps and family. Without the Corps, I don’t know where I would be today. I love the Corps, it’s my life. I always said them in that order and people used to say, ‘you put your family last?’. Think about it, I believe in God, I serve my country and I serve my corps, so if I was always doing those three, my family was always taken care of.”

Allen, a Portland, Maine native, was selected to become the air station’s sergeant major after a two-year tour as sergeant major of Marine Wing Support Squadron 272.

Before taking the reins of the air station, Allen gave words of praise to Squires for all the work he has done through his Marine Corps career.

“First I want to thank you for your 30 years of honorable and faithful service,” said Allen. “You are the embodiment of institutional core values and you have led your Marines and sailors with firmness and dignity for 30 years. I am honored to know you and greatly indebted upon you in my career.”

HMH-464 receives new sergeant major Lance Cpl. Ryan Joyner ROTOVUE Staff

Sgt. Maj. Steven L. Lunsford relinquished his duties as Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464’s sergeant major to Sgt. Maj. David Leikwold during a relief and appointment ceremony in the squadron’s hangar, May 1.

“Lunsford is a true professional and warrior,” said Lt. Col. Alison J. Thompson, HMH-464 commanding officer.

Lunsford served as the sergeant major of HMH-464 since July 2010 and is now going to serve as the sergeant major of Marine Corps Detachment Fort Lee, Va. “Despite his ground-side background, he embraced aviation and what squadron Marines did on a daily basis,” said Thompson.

Lunsford became an aerial observer and earned combat aircrew wings while in Afghanistan, said Thompson.

Thompson went on to commend Lunsford on his ability to take care of the Marines of the squadron.

“He always sets the example, holds Marines accountable to the standard and is fair in all his dealings with Marines,” said Thompson. “He will most certainly be missed.”

Leikwold was the previous sergeant major of 2nd Radio Battalion based out of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and this is his first time serving as sergeant major of an aviation squadron.

“We are excited to welcome aboard Leikwold and know that he will continue to take care of and shape the Marines of HMH-464,” said Thompson.

“I am coming into a highly-proficient squadron and look forward to maintaining the high state of readiness the squadron has,” said Leikwold.

During the ceremony, Lunsford spoke about his love for the Marines of the squadron and how he is proud of everything the Marines have done and will continue to do.

“It is going to be a challenge learning all the new military occupational specialties that are associated with the squadron. “With that being said, I am excited for the awesome opportunity,” said Leikwold. “Marines are Marines regardless of whether they are in the aviation or ground side of the Marine Corps.”

In Lunsford’s farewell speech, he said he was glad that Leikwold will be replacing him as the sergeant major of HMH-464.

‘Gunrunners’ receive new senior enlisted leadership Lance Cpl. Manuel A. Estrada ROTOVUE Staff

Marines and family members of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269 welcomed Sgt. Maj. Marion L. Hammerschmidt as the new senior enlisted advisor during a relief and appointment ceremony where Sgt. Maj. William E. Sweeney relinquished his duties, May 3.

Sweeney was HMLA-269’s sergeant major from June 2009 through May 2012.

Sweeney was as an outstanding sergeant major, exclaimed Lt. Col. Mark E. Van Skike, HMLA-269 commanding officer. In Sweeney’s time with the Gunrunners, he deployed twice with the squadron to combat areas and advised three different commanding officers.

Van Skike wished Sweeney luck as he transitions to his new duty as the sergeant major for Recruiting Station Fredrick, Md. Sweeney said he had been dreading the day he had to leave the “Cadillac” of helicopter squadrons. He went on to tell the squadron when he becomes an old man, he will not wear Marine Corps shirts, but people will see him wear a Gunrunners’ logo.

“There is nothing but love,” said Sweeney

when the talked about his past with the squadron. “I can honestly say this has been the best tour in my 23 years. We have the best (staff noncommissioned officers), NCOs and the best Marines in the Marine Corps.”

He said he will miss the squadron, but is ready to move to his next assignment where he has big shoes to fill. He described Hammerschmidt as a legend in the recruiting field, but he will work to become just as legendary as Hammerschmidt.

“I’m going to be a Gunrunner forever,” said Sweeney. “I love you Gunrunners; I’m going to miss you guys.”

Hammerschmidt told the Marines of the squadron that he is excited to learn the different aspects of a helicopter squadron. He has never been assigned to an air station before and he wants to meet and understand what every Marine does within the squadron.

Hammerschmidt enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1986 as a motor vehicle operator and was assigned to Okinawa, Japan. He rose through the ranks and earned the military occupational specialty as a logistics vehicle systems operator. Upon his selection of sergeant major, he reported for duty to Recruiting Station Fredrick, Md.

The Marine Corps has been training with the MV-22B Osprey for more than 10 years. In 2005, the Marine Corps began transitioning from CH46D Sea Knight to the Osprey, a transition that is still going on today.

The Marines who fly and work on the Osprey began at Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron 204.

“It all starts here,” said Maj. Jason N. Myers, VMMT-204 operations officer. “Anyone who flies an MV-22B Osprey in the Marine Corps has come through our doors.”

VMMT-204 trains pilots and crew chiefs to operate the Osprey.

Myers estimates 120 pilots are trained by the squadron each year.

“It is paramount to provide the Marine Corps with well-trained Osprey pilots,” said Myers.

“That’s why we train all the time.”

Myers said the dedicated Raptors instructors routinely train students on weekends and holidays to ensure mission success.

The Raptors furthered the training of two pilots and two crew chiefs during a routine flight May 3.

“We’re doing multiple scenarios during this flight,” said Capt. Matthew T. Dwyer, VMMT204 instructor pilot. “We will also be calling out

emergency procedures along the way for the students and crew to react to.”

While en route to a confined area landing scenario, they reacted to a simulated external load suspension systems failure, to train the students to make sound decisions in a stressful environment.

“We ask our crew chiefs and pilots to make decisions in various situations on every flight,” said Dwyer. “After a month or so of daily emergency procedures, the students cover a wide variety of topics.”

While Dwyer trained the future Osprey pilots, the crew chiefs trained in the back of the aircraft.

The crew chief students familiarized themselves with pre-flight inspections, in-flight procedures and post-flight checklists. Crew chiefs also make use of night vision goggles and other equipment essential to working in the back of an Osprey.

“The crew chiefs go through a lot of training,” said Sgt. Charles R. Bishop, VMMT-204 instructor.

“After almost two months of ground training, we take them up on flight after flight to get them used to different missions.”

Bishop said that by the time most students graduate, getting their aircrew wings is one of the highlights of their careers.

“We’re extremely proud of them,” said Bishop.

“They go off to fly around the world and do great things, and we know that we helped make that happen.”

Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Marines aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River participated in vehicle extrication training at the ARFF fire pits, April 24.

It is crucial for ARFF Marines to stay proficient in all aspects of their training, especially vehicle extrication.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, vehicle extrication is the process of removing a vehicle from around a person who has been involved in a motor vehicle accident when conventional means of exit are impossible or inadvisable.

“The ability to access a patient and extricate him from his entrapment without further injury is extremely important,” said Gunnery Sgt. Israel Dominguez, ARFF training chief, Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron. “Vehicle extrication training is a vital training piece to ARFF Marines.

The primary duty of ARFF Marines is to rescue trapped or injured personnel.”

An ARFF Marine should always expect the unexpected, said Joe Towery, strategic accounts sales manager for Hurst, the manufacturer of Jaws of Life. He said they need to learn to

always think outside the box and think of every possible way to approach a situation. When arriving at a crash site, he said the Marines cannot always expect a textbook scenario.

“Whether ARFF is responding to an aircraft emergency aboard New River or responding to a mutual aid response with the Camp Lejeune Fire Department, we always have to be ready

for the worst scene, always keeping in mind that extricating a trapped victim from a vehicle or aircraft is a priority,” said Dominguez.

The ARFF Marines must train often on all the new rescue techniques and equipment to ensure the safety and well-being of the trapped victims and the Marines doing the extrication.

Dominguez said, “The vehicle extrication training entails using equipment such as the cutters, spreaders (Jaws of Life), combination tool and rescue rams to overcome the challenges of removing a door, windshield, trunk or interior with the purpose of creating an entry point or interior space to work with.”

He said extricating victims is an art that every firefighter should practice often to be able to perform flawlessly when the unexpected calls.

For some of the Marines, this was the first time they were able to get hands-on experience and practice their extrication skills since their military occupational specialty school.

“This training was well received by the ARFF Marines,” said Dominguez. “Furthermore, it gave ARFF Marines the opportunity to practice the art of vehicle extrication training which, in turn, will assist them on maintaining their high level of readiness while performing their duties.”

Marines aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River and sponsors of the Marine Corps Community Services Spring Golf Scramble competed in a round of 18 holes at the Bear Trail Golf course in Jacksonville, N.C., April 27.

“Events like this are very important because it builds camaraderie, unit cohesion and keeps New River a family,” said Sgt. Maj. William F. Squires, air station sergeant major.

“We are a family on New River. We have some teams from the civilian community as well. This brings all of us together and keeps that military and civilian community relationship going.”

Nancy Stankowski, MCCS athletic director, said 10 more teams showed up this year than last year, maxing out the amount of people the golf course could manage. Twentyseven teams of four participated in the Captain’s Choice Tournament to build camaraderie and win a cash prize.

Lance Strickland, Pro Golf Association Pro, was at the tournament due to a sponsorship from National University.

He gave free lessons and tips on the driving range to anyone who wanted help or had questions.

Each team was given a handicap as needed of no less

than 35. To make it fair, each team was only allowed one person who had a 5 handicap or less.

The main goal for each team, besides winning, was to make the coveted hole-in-one. If a player did accomplish this great feat, they would have been awarded $10,000 by sponsor East Coast Hospitality.

“There’s really only one person out here who has a chance to hit the hole-in-one, and that’s me,” joked Squires.

“The rest are going to try, but everyone is really wanting to get that hole-in-one. It builds challenges and gives a good incentive for teams to come out and here and play.”

Before the scramble kicked off, Col. Jeffrey M. Hewlett, MCAS New River commanding officer, gave a speech thanking the sponsors and everyone else who came out to participate. He jokingly told everyone to put their clubs back in the car because his team had the tournament on lockdown.

The winning team was Potters Putters consisting of Kim Burgin, Jeff Wood, Dac Carpenter, and Willie Miller.

The sponsors of the event helped make the day more enjoyable by handing out door prizes and creating challenges like the hole-in-one challenge.

“We have great sponsors who help the air station,” said Stephanie Miles, MCCS sponsorship coordinator. “Anytime

we need anything, they are there to support us. They like to give back to their community.”

The day was full of Marines and civilians smiling, laughing and building the cohesion and camaraderie necessary for a good community relationship.

His wife, Jamie, tears streaming down her face, accompanied him inside with their five children in tow. The 3,000-square foot home, filled with the aroma of wood and lacquer, looked like a display model, complete with furniture, linens, upholstery, dinnerware and televisions in the main rooms.

The Gizzarelli’s have not made a down payment on the house. They have not paid for any of the furniture inside. They never will.

The house, valued at approximately $400,000 dollars, was built using supplies and donations from local businesses and various veterans’ groups in a project organized by Operation Finally Home. This non-profit organization provides custom-made, mortgagefree homes to wounded and disabled veterans and widows of fallen service members. Since being established in 2005, OFH has built nearly 50 homes in 10 different states.

“If anybody deserves the American dream, it’s those who are fighting for it,” said Daniel Vargas, Executive Director of OFH. “It’s the men and women who protect us day in and day out.”

Home has been an elusive concept for Gizzarelli. The former Marine staff sergeant has traveled a rough path the past nine years.

Gizzarelli enlisted after graduating from high school in 1998. Ever since he was 10 years old, he wanted to be a Marine. Growing up in Niagra Falls, N.Y., Gizzarelli would listen to his father’s stories about being a Marine in Vietnam.

During his first enlistment, Gizzarelli served in Marine Corps Security Forces in Keflavik, Iceland, and participated in peacekeeping operations while aboard ship in the Mediterranean Sea. After reenlisting in 2002, Gizzarelli received orders to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment and deployed to Iraq during the initial invasion in March 2003. He took part in the fighting that occurred, March 23, around the city of An Nasiriyah. Eighteen Marines made the ultimate sacrifice that day.

“It was my baptism of fire and it was pretty bad,” recalled Gizzarelli. “I’m just going to leave it at that.”

Gizzarelli and his fellow Marines returned home in May 2003. At his homecoming ceremony, his first wife was there holding their daughter, born a few days earlier. Although he was happy to be back on U.S. soil, Gizzarelli said it all felt surreal.

“It was kind of weird,” said Gizzarelli. “It

was kind of uncomfortable, kind of cool, you know? We’re the new breed. We just put our niche in the history books, in the lore of the Marine Corps. It felt awesome to be home, but to be honest with you, I was still over there (in Iraq).”

In July 2004, Gizzarelli deployed to Iraq again. During this deployment he survived five IED blasts, two of which knocked him

“I didn’t recognize it at first,” said Gizzarelli. “I was having a lot of difficulty sleeping, I had a real short fuse and recruiting duty isn’t the easiest duty at all.”

“I prefer combat over recruiting duty – I’d take it in a heartbeat,” said Gizzarelli. Long hours, lot of hard work, lot of stress; you’re dealing with mom and dad and they don’t want their boy or girl going into the Marine Corps. It kind of wears on you. I started losing hours.

I’d look at the clock and I would wonder where two hours went.”

With the strain of recruiting and the dissolution of his marriage, Gizzarelli found himself in a hole, physically and mentally. He sought help at Bethesda Naval Hospital and, after five years of suffering from the effects of PTSD, was finally diagnosed and able to begin treatment.

It was also during this time that Gizzarelli met his wife Jamie, whom he married in November 2007. He credits her with being able to help him seek treatment and get his symptoms under control.

“There’s been a lot of struggles,” said Jamie. “Emotional – everyday coming home being frustrated. Just got to have each other’s back. You got to stand by each other.”

Following his stint as a recruiter, Gizzarelli was assigned to the operations office for Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Division

based at Camp Lejeune, N.C. His duties included organizing and executing training operations and trips to the rifle range. Despite his previous treatment, Gizzarelli found himself struggling to focus and complete the simplest of tasks.

“As an infantry NCO (non-commissioned officer), you multitask.

You have to juggle a lot of balls to get the job done. Here I am doing simple paperwork and I just couldn’t get it done. They were demanding things of me that I simply couldn’t do anymore. It affected me emotionally. I’m a Marine, I can do it – there is no quit. I found myself failing at simple things and it was driving me nuts.”

Gizzarelli was suffering from an injury common to service members who have been exposed to IED blasts: traumatic brain injury. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, from 2007 to 2009, more than 24,000 veterans were confirmed to have sustained this signature injury of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The more severe symptoms include headaches, loss of balance, anxiety, memory lapses and impaired concentration and attention.

Shortly after being diagnosed with TBI, Gizzarelli found himself at the Wounded Warrior Battalion, which specializes in taking care of wounded, ill and injured Marines and their families as they recover and transition back to life as a civilian.

After going through the transition process back to civilian life, Gizzarelli was medically retired from the Marine Corps in February 2009.

Since then, the Gizzarelli’s have continued to live in Jacksonville,

N.C., only a few miles away from Camp Lejeune. Despite facing financial hardship and taking care their own two children, the couple decided to adopt three boys, ages three to five, who were stuck in an abusive home.

According to Vargas, the quest to gain custody of the three children is what led Operation Finally Home to select the Gizzarelli’s as the recipients of the new house.

“That service before self is still there,” said Vargas. “That basically set it off. They need this home. (He’s) not only taking care of his family, but he’s taking care of three others.”

The Gizzarelli’s said they are more than thankful to all of those who have had a hand in building and putting the house together, which they see as a “new beginning.”

“It hasn’t been easy since I’ve gotten out of the Marine Corps,” said Gizzarelli. “Emotionally, it’s been very difficult. Organizations, like Operation Finally Home, that do this for service members…it gives us a fresh start. I can think of a lot of guys who I served with who I personally feel are more deserving of this. I’m blessed. My family’s blessed that we’ve been given this opportunity.

“If I had it my way, every wounded veteran from the damn war would have a free house.”

As friends and family members flooded into the new home, Gizzarelli made his way up to a special room that was constructed directly above the garage, which he calls, “The Man Cave.” He walked in, sat down on a couch and relaxed. He was finally home.

The Children, Youth and Teen Program aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River was the first youth and teen center in any Marine Corps installation to be accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

“Being accredited by NAEYC is an honor,” said Kim C. Cunningham, youth director for the air station’s youth program. “It means we are recognized for providing highquality childcare by a highly respected organization.”

To be accredited by NAEYC, a child development center must meet the associations high standards and be inspected by an association representative.

Cunningham explained that when NAEYC inspected the facility, they found the center did not have any discrepancies.

“Most of the time, when they inspect a childcare provider, they find some kind of discrepancy that (the provider is) told to fix,” said Cunningham. “But with us, we started off doing exactly what we need to be doing. That means we’re doing a good job.”

Now that they are NAEYC accredited, they will be monitored and kept to the nationally accepted standard. In addition to that, both the child development and teen activities will be governed by one body.

“In the past, the child development activities and the teen activities were separate,”

said Gina Mahal, assistant director of youth activities. “But now that they both answer to one authority, they can support each other.”

The air station’s Children, Youth and Teen Program will continue to provide programs for children and teens aboard the air station including childcare, classes and community events.

Cunningham said in terms of childcare, they currently provide a before-and-afterschool childcare service and plan on offering a summer program starting June 18.

For the older kids and teens, Mahal said they will begin another babysitter’s training course with CPR and first aid, May 19. It will be open to children ages 11-18 and will continue with the Keystone Club, an organization focused on developing leadership skills to kids 14-18 year-olds.

Throughout April, the program participated in combat fitness test related activities including ammo can lifts, fireman’s carry and low crawling.

In May, they are planning to continue fitness activities with their Get Fit, Triple Play and Healthy Habits programs.

‘PRIME for Life’ arms Marines with knowledge of alcohol Lance Cpl. Manuel A. Estrada ROTOVUE Staff

Marine and Family Services aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River will offer a new alcohol and drug awareness program for Marines called “PRIME for Life,” May 10-11.

One of the primary goals of the program is the prevention of alcohol or drug problems, according to http://www.primeforlife.org.

People who believe they have problems with alcohol and want help breaking their dependence should talk with their squadron’s substance abuse control officer and ask for help, said James Heath, Marine Corps Community Services drug demand reduction coordinator.

Staff Sgt. Dwayne King, Marine Wing Support Squadron 272 SACO, said the SACO is not there to judge Marines or

get them in trouble. The SACO’s job is to provide Marines and sailors with information or start them in a program that would benefit them.

He added that the SACO’s door is always open and Marines should come talk to help prevent a problem before it starts.

The two-day course uses small-group discussions and statistic-based information to inform the participants of the hazards that alcohol and drug abuse can cause, said Heath.

The Marine Corps has a program in place called Building Alcohol Skills Intervention Curriculum, where noncommissioned officers can learn how to talk with their Marines about the dangers of binge drinking and drugs.

The problem with the program was that some NCOs were taking the class but failing to speak with their Marines about it, said Heath.

Binge drinking is classified as having five or more alcoholic beverages in one sitting. A drink is a shot of liquor, a pint of beer or a glass of wine, since there is the same amount of alcohol in all three, said Heath.

In 2009, more than six percent of Americans over the age of 12 stated they were heavy alcohol drinkers, according to http://www.usmc-mccs.org/subabuse/alcohol.

More than 60 percent of Marines are 17 to 25 years old, which puts them in the age demographic most in danger of substance abuse and getting in trouble because of alcoholrelated incidents, said Heath.

PRIME for Life is being used in 48 states and does not use scare tactics to influence people like other programs. It uses statistics and facts to inform participants of the effect of alcohol in the body to deter people from overindulging, according to the program’s website.

They want to delay the age Marines start using alcohol, reduce the amount consumed in one sitting and prevent abuse before it even happens.

Performs for Marine Families

K

ids around the world have grown to love the iconic American sitcom, Sesame Street. Marine Corps Air Station New River hosted USO performances of Sesame Street Live, April 28-29.

The program is known for its educational content through the dynamic use of Muppets. Since the ‘80s, Sesame Street characters have taken to the road to perform Sesame Street Live so children can see their favorite characters up close.

Military families jumped at the chance to see the show, which featured themes to help military children.

“This show was created just for military families,” said Lonnie Cooper, USO tour manager. “It’s primarily about how to make new friends and stay in touch with old ones, after you move.”

Cooper said a new character named Katie was created just for the military show.

“Katie is a Muppet from a military family who is moving away from Sesame Street,” said Cooper. “She’s going through what a lot of military children have to go through.”

He said that many children recognize their own struggle when they see her, and seeing that she can get through

it helps them out a lot.

Cooper said this is the first time their show has come to the air station and needless to say, the crowd was very excited.

“I love performing on Marine bases,” said Cooper.

“Marines tend to have big families, and that’s what we’re all about. Making families happy.”

Lance Cpl. Joshua R. Whitehead, father of a two-yearold son and a combat photographer with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron who attended the live show with his family, said he appreciated that they came out and performed for military families and related the show to struggles military kids have to go through.

During the show, Katie was consoled by Elmo and his friends with sound advice as well as participating in songs and dances with the audience. Even if the dynamic movements of the famous dance “The Elmo Slide” were hard to mimic, audience members left with a clear message.

“The message I left with was that even if you have to move someplace new, it’s not the end of the world,” said Whitehead. “Everybody’s the new guy at some point in their life.”

Families create friendships over dinner Cpl. John Suleski

Family members of deployed Marines and sailors made connections with other people in the same situation over plates of spaghetti and salad at a dinner served at the Marine Corps Air Station New River Chapel, April 26.

The chapel holds the Deployed Spouses’ Dinner on the last Thursday night of every month to assist the spouses while their other halves are on the other side of the world, said Navy Lt. Cmdr. Marc H. Massie, air station chaplain.

“It’s just something we do to try to help out the spouses who may be going through a tough time,” he said.

The dinner was a joint venture between the Catholic and Protestant sides of the chapel, said Massie. Marine retirees, Navy religious professionals and other volunteers make the food for the dinner.

The chaplain tried not to discuss religion after a prayer at the beginning of the event because he wanted everyone to feel welcomed. Instead, the family members conversed with one another to make new friends and strengthen current relationships.

“It’s a great way for families who might temporarily be single parents to find others in a similar situation and network

with them to help each other out,” said Abigail Thompson, Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269’s family readiness officer.

Thompson said she tries to get the word out about the dinner so all of her spouses of deployed Marines can benefit from the event.

Approximately 100 family members showed up to the

dinner. Among them, Courtney Munroe, wife of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 461 airframe technician Cpl. C.D. Munroe, met with old friends and made connections with new ones.

Although Mrs. Munroe had reservations about attending the dinner because she thought she would not know anyone else, the event helped her gain confidence that she is one of many spouses with a husband or wife temporarily absent.

While the dinner is called the Deployed Spouses’ Dinner, it is also for children. Some children face hard times without their mother or father around, and meeting others in the same situation can help them cope, said Munroe.

“The children get to meet other kids whose mothers and fathers are doing the same thing their parents are doing,” said Munroe.

After everyone finished eating, the children ventured outside the chapel and did what children do best: play.

Activities included playing tag, climbing trees and collecting pinecones for purposes only elementary school-aged children know.

When both children and parents feel better at the end of the dinner, the goal of the dinner has been met, said Massie.

Guardian ad Litem advocates for children Lance Cpl. Martin R. Egnash ROTOVUE Staff

When children go to court in cases where child abuse or neglect is an issue, they are appointed a representative who advocates for their needs. These people are the voice for the mistreated children. They fight for the children’s needs, and act as a second opinion for court cases. In North Carolina, these people are from the Guardian ad Litem program.

Guardians ad Litem, latin for appointed guardians, are used all across the United States. Unlike other states, North Carolina appoints both an attorney and a Guardian ad Litem volunteer. In Onslow County, children are represented by Guardian ad Litem District 4, and due to the large military presence in the area, the program accommodates children from military families.

“The military community in Onslow County is tremendous,” said Rusty Brown, the District 4 administer. “Helping children from military families makes up a large part of what we do in this district.”

Brown said their goal is to develop a working relationship with military families,

train with communities that are associated with military organizations and find more military-oriented volunteers who are familiar with how the armed forces work.

“It’s different working with military families,” said Brown. “We try to get volunteers who have had some military experience to work with the children that live on base.

That way they know more about their environment.”

Sylvia Sulvai, the military coordinator for Guardian ad Litem District 4, believes that taking care of abused or neglected military children is an issue that many people do not realize.

“Those kids don’t have a voice,” said Sulvai. “Somebody has to fight for them so the court knows what they need. We have to be their voice.”

The symbol for child abuse prevention is a blue pinwheel. Similar to the more popular pink ribbon associated with breast cancer, supporters of the cause wear blue pinwheel pins and decorate their community with the popular children’s toy.

“It’s suppose to represent the shining future for the children, that we want them to have,” said Sulvai. “My hope is that the blue

Relocation program makes PCS moves easy Lance Cpl. Ryan Joyner ROTOVUE Staff

The Relocation Assistance Program is a mission essential program that supports military members and their families during a permanent change of station move.

It tries to reduce the stress related to frequent relocations, and services are structured to make the relocation process as smooth as possible.

RAP provides several different resources to those who are relocating such as one-on-one counseling and planning and different classes ranging from home buying and renting to moving outside the continental United States, according to Kathy Peterpaul, RAP specialist.

“More often it is the non-active duty spouses that suffer from anxiety and stress about the move so the relocation staff also provides non-clinical counseling to active duty members and their spouses,” said Peterpaul.

The RAP has both pre-departure and pre-arrival services available for Marines and their families to utilize.

The RAP has a sponsorship program that assists in getting Marines and family members a sponsor from their new duty station to assist with relocation and reduce stress and anxiety of a move, said Peterpaul.

It also has a resource library with military relocation books, brochures, preparation tips for moving and relocating pets, military installations files and all the information someone would need to move.

“The RAP has been proven to save money for the member by teaching them about the entire PCS process and making them aware of all the PCS and travel money entitlements,” said Peterpaul.

After Marines and their families arrive at their new duty station the RAP continues to make the relocation process go smoothly.

If Marines and their families are in need of household goods they can use the RAP’s loan locker. The loan locker provides household items for Marines and their families to borrow free-of-charge while awaiting the arrival of their goods or after they have been shipped to their new duty station.

“The RAP is a great resource for base and area information for anyone new to the installation and community and for anyone preparing to leave the installation,” said Peterpaul.

The program has made the transition to a new duty station smoother. It is set up to make the process pain-free and easy for the new Marine to transition to their new duty station.

Wednesday, May 9, 2012 WILMINGTON, N.C. --From World War II era pinup girls to painted rocks formed into a squadron’s logo, art has many forms in the military.

Another form of art and expression popular in the Marine Corps is tattooing.

With a tool puncturing several layers of skin and depositing permanent ink, artists can create detailed images on a Marine’s skin.

“There are many reasons Marines get tattoos,” said Staff Sgt. Ryan Dibble, Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training instructor. “Tattoos about deployments are pretty common. It’s a significant part of their lives.”

While tattoos may have significant meaning to the wearer, much thought should be put into the design beforehand due to the permanence of the medium.

The 2012 Cape Fear Tattoo and Arts Expo gave Marines a chance to find artists and ideas at the Wilmington Convention Center, April 27-29.

With dozens of artists from across the country featuring different tattooing styles from old school hearts with name banners to eerily life-like portraits, the expo provided many opportunities for people to get tattoos and ideas for tattoos.

Many Marines at the expo got tattoos of compasses, mermaids, and an assortment of motivational designs to commemorate their time in the Corps popularly known as “moto-tats.”

The expo also featured a seminar on choosing a tattoo the canvas won’t regret later.

Marines should adhere to tattoo regulations and not get any artwork that may lead to paperwork. According to Marine Corps Order P1020.34G, Marines may not have head, neck or sleeve tattoos that are visible in a physical training uniform.

Large tattoos or a collection of smaller designs covering a large portion of limbs are considered sleeve tattoos. Also, offensive designs including nudity and anti-American sentiment are not allowed.

Marines must be careful not to get ink that might hinder their future careers.

“A large part of tattoos is commitment,” said tattoo artist Kris Richter. “There are people who come into the shop who have no tattoos and want neck tattoos or hand tattoos. What are you going to do for the rest of your life?

What are you going to do for a living?”

Choosing an artist is also important, said Richter. Unless laser removal or cover-up ink is successful, tattoos are permanent work that should be done right the first time. Customers should only hire artists that have the necessary skill for the project.

As a sergeant of Marines, one must set the example for others to emulate, be professional both on and off duty, be responsible for the accomplishments of assigned missions and for the safety, professional development and well-being of the Marines under his charge.

A sergeant must embody the Marine Corps institutional core values of honor, courage and commitment while leading his Marines with firmness, fairness and dignity.

These are the words that are read during the promotion of a noncommissioned officer. Sgt. Donald Edmonston, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263 airframe mechanic and a Great Falls, Mont., native, strives to live up to these words every day of his career.

Edmonston takes great pride in developing himself as the best mechanic possible. He has trained and qualified to obtain every billet in his job field. He has served as a quality assurance reporter, collateral duty inspector, and a collateral duty quality assurance representative. A CDQAR is fundamentally responsible for the prevention of defects to the entire aircraft. The concept embraces all events from the start of the maintenance operation to its completion. He possesses a detailed, working knowledge of all aviation maintenance programs.

Edmonston is the last person to look over an aircraft before it takes flight and is responsible for the safety of the crew before flight, said Sgt. Nickolas Tissandier, VMM-263 collateral duty inspector.

While deployed on a Marine Expeditionary Unit to Africa, he was on an MV-22B Osprey that had a seized motor and was unable to continue flying. The aircraft safely landed in Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, Africa, said Edmonston.

The crew of the aircraft swapped out the motor in a week and the Osprey flew out of Camp Lemonnier without a problem.

Edmonston then stayed in Djibouti to share his knowledge with the service members there, said Tissandier.

Back at home, Edmonston takes the same efforts to teach the Marines under his charge.

A Marine who reported in for duty at VMM-263 was having trouble keeping his weight in check. The Marine tried to lose weight but could not motivate himself enough to shed the extra pounds.

The mechanics do not get a lot of time to perform physical training but Edmonston always finds time, Tissandier said. Edmonston took it upon himself to take that Marine to the gym twice a day until the Marine was fit and meeting standards.

These are just a few examples of what makes Edmonston a good Marine. He has the full confidence of his command, said Tissandier.

He was meritoriously promoted to both corporal and sergeant.

Through all this, Edmonston remains humble. He said he only does what is expected of him as a Marine.

This year’s tax season has come to a close, and the Marines of the tax center aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River worked long and hard to ensure the well caring of the Marines and families of the air station.

The tax center opened January 17th and served Marines and families aboard the air station by getting the most on their tax returns.

Even though the tax season has ended, the tax center will remain open until May 17 for Marines, retirees and family members who need to file state or federal taxes, or have any questions about their taxes.

This season, the Marines managed to get $3.2 million in returns and saved the government more than $200,000, according to Staff Sgt. Jesus Sosa, tax center staff noncommissioned officer in charge.

All of the money saved and the countless numbers of Marines and family members helped, would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of the tax center Marines, said Sosa.

“I really want to thank the parent units that provided the Marines to work at the tax center,” said Sosa.

officer Col. Jeffrey M. Hewlett presented the Marines of the center with letters of appreciation for their outstanding dedication and professionalism.

The Navy and Marine Corps achievement medal was also presented to Sosa for his outstanding leadership and professionalism while serving as the tax center SNCO. Hewlett commended the Marines of the tax center for not having any complaints, as well as meeting the Internal Revenue Service’s standards.

“When the IRS inspected the tax center they couldn’t find any discrepancies. It was flawless,” said Sosa.

The tax center received six interactive customer evaluation comments and all of them provided the tax center with positive feedback about how well the Marines worked.

“The Marines working here deserve all the credit for how well everything went,” said Sosa.

Through working at the tax center, Sosa said he feels like he has educated himself in dealing with finances.

With all of the experience and information gathered from this year, the tax center can be expected to perform at an even higher standard next year.

A friend of mine was sexually assaulted last week. He wasn’t a stranger. He was someone she knew. He gave her a ride home because she had been drinking. Now our friends act like it was her fault and they don’t want her to report because it will hurt his career. What’s right here?

Let’s start with the basics. No one deserves to be assaulted.

Bad decisions like drinking and getting in a car with someone you barely know do not wipe out that first statement. No one asks to be hurt.

That being said, this is a very touchy subject. Men and women look at the subject very differently. Women tend to say no in a way that attempts to spare the feelings of the man. They try to be

too nice and this is frequently misinterpreted by men who see the woman as being coy or playing games. Many men firmly believe that women want to be over-powered and convinced. Both have something to learn about the other. Below are some rules for both sexes that may give insight into sexual assault views of each gender.

Rules for smart women: Say no in a way that means it. Worry less about your partner/ friend’s feelings and more about your own safety.

Be careful who you drink with. One of the biggest problems with drinking is that you make choices you would not make when you are sober. A choice to eat too much while drinking is not such a big deal, but choosing to trust someone with your safety is. Do not choose a sexual partner while under influence.

Do not put yourself in a vulnerable position. For example, staying overnight with people that you do not know well or agreeing to allow a casual acquaintance or new boyfriend to stay over. Trust slowly.

Rules for smart men: No really does mean no. Make sure that your girlfriend or new acquaintance really does consent before having sex. Understand that women frequently say no gently out of a desire to be nice, not because they want or expect to be talked into changing their minds. They really do mean it.

Never have sex with someone who has been drinking.

Be absolutely, positively sure your date is of age. In this state, any girl under 18 should be left to grow up.

These rules are preventative. They will not help your friend now. This is in no way a suggestion that she is at fault. Your friends are right and wrong. It will hurt the man who assaulted your friend’s career and it should. Sexual assault is a crime and failing to report it allows people to believe that your friend did something wrong or is at fault here. Letting sexual assault go unreported helps perpetuate myths that “she asked for it” by wearing sexy clothing or flirting. The bottom line is that nothing your friend did, wore, or said justifies assaulting her. Sex should always occur as a result of mutual consent given while both people are sober. The reason for reporting is not just that sexual assault is a crime, but it also prevents a crime. It is not likely this is a first offense and if not reported it will not be the last.

Holding someone accountable against social pressure is tough, but it is an important step in stopping sexual assault.
