Aviation logistics from the sea 2nd MAW Marines prepare for exercise ‘Bold Alligator’ Cpl. Brittany J. Kohler ROTOVUE Staff

Approximately 80 Marines from several units within 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing participated in a week-long load/offload and communications training exercise aboard the Aviation Logistics Support Ship, S.S. Wright, currently docked in Baltimore, Md. The purpose of the T-AVB exercise is to maintain and provide aviation logistics support and sustainment to 2nd MAW. The exercise focused on load planning, loading, communication operations and galley operations aboard the ship. The training ensures the efficiency of a functional and deployable 2nd MAW logistical asset, which is required to conduct safe and effective T-AVB embarkation.

“The training teaches the Marines all the steps and processes it takes to make a deployment happen and to be able to support the aircraft,” said Gunnery Sgt. Michael K. Ward, mobile facility staff noncommissioned officer-in-charge, Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 14, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point.

The S.S. Wright is one of two Aviation Logistics Support Ships used by the Marine Corps. Their mission is to provide a rapid tailored deployable Intermediate Mainte-

nance Activity (IMA) to support forward deployed aircraft.

“What we did was take these facilities and put them all over the ship in a functioning capability to simulate day-to-day operations in a deployed environment,” said Ward.

The mobile facilities look like storage containers that any ship may carry for goods or cargo. They are used for a variety of things to provide a workspace and storage for aviation maintainers, supply, bulk storage, etc.

Every mobile facility is configured into a work center. So the Marines not only have a container that houses their components, but they now have an environmentally controlled work center with electricity, lights, air conditioning and other components that fit their needs in order to complete their job.

“They can pick up these mobile facilities (at Cherry Point) and put them on the TAVB, and within a matter of days be a completely operational (IMA),” said Charles R. Doyle, aviation planner, aviation logistics department, 2nd MAW. “Then the T-AVB can sail to any part of the world to offload if required.”

The majority of the maintenance equipment and supplies that are required to maintain forward deployed Marine Corps

fixed wing and rotor wing aircraft will be delivered by the T-AVB. “We still have legacy aircraft out on the flight line that require support,” said Doyle.

“This ship can be configured into a floating aviation logistics platform from the sea, so there is no host nation support required.

For the aircraft to be able to fly, we have to have good parts and we have to be able to replenish these parts. That is where these ships come in handy.”

Though the training was cut short due to safety precautions related to Hurricane Irene, Ward affirmed the training exercise a success.

“A lot of these Marines didn’t know much about the job in the beginning of the week,” said Ward. “By the end of the exercise, I didn’t have to give out much instruction, they knew exactly what they were doing and they did it safely.”

The training was conducted in preparation for an upcoming exercise, Bold Alligator, slated to take place in January.

Bold Alligator is similar to the exercise conducted in Baltimore, just on a larger scale. According to the U.S. Fleet Forces Command Blog, Bold Alligator 2012, will be the largest amphibious exercise conducted by the Navy and Marine Corps in the last 10 years.

Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 29 Marines took time out of their busy day to boost morale and camaraderie at the squadron’s Marine Appreciation Day, Aug. 18.

The event, held outside the squadron’s hangar, included two roasted pigs served by the MALS-29 sergeant major, Sgt. Maj. Joseph E. VanFonda, the MALS-29 commanding officer, Lt. Col. Hugh R. Ware, and other senior leadership.

“This is to show how much we appreciate our Marines,” VanFonda said.

The event also included a raffle for a noncommissioned officer’s sword. The proceeds will help pay for the unit’s annual Marine Corps Birthday Ball.

After the MALS-29 Marines were served, the command welcomed other Marines on Marine Corps Air Station New River to enjoy the event, including Marines from Marine Aircraft Group 29. MALS-29 supports MAG-29 with intermediate level maintenance of parts that require work beyond the capabilities of the operational squadrons.

MALS-29 deploys wherever the squadrons go. Out of more than 1,100 Marines, approximately 230 are deployed around the world.

More than 75 MALS-29 Marines who

were part of a provisional maintenance squadron known as MALS-40, returned to the air station Aug. 14, said Gunnery Sgt. Jessica L. Luna, MALS-29 logistics chief. Other units that made up MALS-40 included MALS-26 from New River and MALS-14 from MCAS Cherry Point.

Without the hard work of the Marines, the birds of MAG-29 wouldn’t be able to fly, said VanFonda.

The Marines of MALS-29 have many diverse jobs; each of them have important places in the air wing.

Some of these occupations deal with fixing helicopter engine and maintaining countermeasure systems. Others make sure the tools that fix those parts work correctly. Even more Marines make sure the parts get to where they need to go.

“The most rewarding part about the job is seeing an aircraft go up and knowing how I fit into the process,” said Cpl. Nichole L. McGowen, MALS-29 aviation supply specialist and high-priority part expeditor in the Supply Response Division.

When aircraft are up in the air, all the Marines of MALS-29 have done their jobs. The appreciation day showed how their command values their dedication to mission accomplishment.

Children aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River participated in a Kid’s Day event hosted by Marine Corps Community Services in the station theater parking lot, Aug. 16.

The event gave children the opportunity to have fun and learn through the various booths and activities set up throughout the day.

“This is for the kids to have one last good time before school starts,” said Risa Carpenter, MCCS marketing director and coordinator of Kid’s Day. Many volunteers took part in the event, including air station Marines, dependents and 27 Marines from Student Administration Company on Camp Geiger.

“I enjoy seeing Marines and their families coming together in a single place and having fun like this,” said Pfc. Josh M. Petry, a Marine awaiting instruction at the School of Infantry.

Other volunteers for the event were Scooter and Hickups, clowns who made balloon animals. McGruff the Crime Dog, an icon used by the Jacksonville Police Department, spread messages about taking a bite out of crime, said Audrey Johnson, MCCS volunteer.

Many booths were set up to entertain and educate children, to include Family Team Building, the air sta-

tion library, and a table of family readiness officers from various units who met with family members, said Carpenter.

Bikes, laptops, and a $100 savings bond were raffled off during the event. Four-hundred backpacks filled with school supplies were also given to children at the event.

Inside the station chapel, volunteers painted children’s nails, gave free hair cuts, read stories and helped with arts and crafts.

One volunteer, Dr. Leslie H. Slosky, read “Where the Wild Things Are.” After the reading, the children crafted an art piece related to the story, she said.

More activities included a climbing wall, a wheelchair obstacle course and a bounce house. The bounce house was a favorite for Andrew Holt, a 3-year-old participant.

“It’s hard to tear him away from that bounce house,” said his mother, Joanne Holt, who also brought her 3-month-old daughter, Annabelle.

To fuel the children throughout the event, hot dogs and hamburgers were available as well as funnel cakes and flavored shaved ice. The shaved-ice vendor had a continuously long line in the August heat.

Under the beating sun, many people took part in the event, walking away with free backpacks and one last good time before the school year started.

SIGONELLA, Italy — A Marine with 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit watches the dockyard while on duty aboard amphibious transport dock USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) while in port at Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy, Aug. 22. The Marines and sailors of the 22nd MEU are currently deployed with Amphibious Squadron 6 (PHIBRON 6) aboard the USS Bataan Amphibious Ready Group (BATARG) and will continue to train and improve the MEU’s ability to operate as a cohesive and effective Marine Air Ground Task Force.
