Ryan Grose tackles the quarterback of the 8th Communication Battalion Outlaws after he tried to run up field, during a game aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River, Nov. 3. The Knights won the game and will be in the playoffs Nov. 14.

he New River Knights beat the Eighth Communication Battalion Outlaws during their last game of the regular season before the playoffs at the Marine Corps Air Station New River football field, Nov. 3.

Before this game, the Knights’ record this season was 4-2.

When the Outlaws lost their last game it put them at 3-4, which assured the Knights would be in the playoffs. This game decided if they would be going in at 2nd or 3rd place.

The first quarter started out slow due to the defensive lines on both teams, but it did not stay that way. Drew Stewart, linebacker and defensive-end, blocked for Tijani Abdurrahman, wide-receiver, who ran for the first touchdown of the game, followed by an extra point.

When the Outlaws got possession of the ball, they were stopped by the hard hitting defensive-line of the Knights. However, when the Knights regained possession, wide-receiver Shawn Monaghan would hit and spin out of the way of oncoming Outlaws, dodging each one of the opposing defense all the way to the end zone.

Then, to add even more to the point spread, the Knights ran in a two-point conversion, making the new score 15-0.

“We played a great game the first quarter,” said head coach Bill Stankowski. “But we played a little differently than we would have if we needed this win to go to the playoffs. Because we’re locked in, we took more risks than we needed to.”

In the second quarter, Abdurrahman intercepted a pass and quickly ended the Outlaws’ possession of the ball. The Knights passed the ball up field and went for a field goal, but the kick was too low.

“If we were playing soccer, that kick would have been great,” joked Knights kicker Nicholas Curl. “I wish my soccer coach would have seen that.”

The Knights got another interception shortly afterwards on the 50 yard line. In two quick passing plays, the Knights got another touchdown and extra point. Before half time, the score was 22-0.

“The first half of the game is practice,” said defensive coach Joshua D. Mount. “Now let’s let them know how we really play.

Remember, anything can happen after halftime.”

At the beginning of the second half, the Outlaws’ quarterback tried running the ball. After he was tackled, the Knights defense sacked him two times in a row, causing many to wonder if he was able to play the rest of the game, foreshadowing what was to come later.

The Outlaws scored a touchdown but failed to make the extra point, bringing the score to 22-6. After a series of hard tackles by both teams, injuries started to happen.

“When it’s cold outside, players are more prone to get injured because their muscles aren’t as warmed up,” said Mount. “Combine that with the fatigue that the Outlaws must have from playing so recently after their last game, and you start to see more injuries.”

People were shocked that the Outlaws’ quarterback was OK after another hard sack by defensive tackle Urgelio Romain.

When the Outlaws lost another player due to injuries that would keep him out of the rest of the game, they decided to end the game early.

“They wouldn’t gain anything from beating us and they wouldn’t lose anything from losing to us either,” said Mount. “Seeing that the game was 22-6 in the fourth quarter and with so many injuries happening, they decided to throw the game.”

At the end of the game, the Knights shook hands with the Outlaws and expressed their concern for their injured players.

The next game will be in the playoffs and is against Headquarters and Headquarters Support Battalion at the main field on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Nov. 14. Until then the Knights will train hard to keep their winning streak all the way to the championships.
