Will You be One in a Million?

February is American Heart Month and, through a series of Traveller articles, I’ll be providing you with nutrition and fitness information that can help you improve your hearthealth or keep your ticker in tip-top shape. First, let’s talk about why you should be One in a Million!

The Million Hearts campaign was launched in September of 2011 by the Department of Health and Human Services, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and numerous other federal, state and private health-related organizations. Its goal is to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes over a fiveyear period by improving access to, quality of and adherence to care prescribed for cardiovascular health. Heart disease and stroke are both widespread and costly diseases facing Americans. They are responsible for 1 in every 3 deaths and which resulted in $444 billion in health care expenditures and lost

productivity in 2010. In addition, heart disease and stroke are among the leading causes of disability in the United States, affecting more than 3 million individuals. Many of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease are controllable, and include blood pressure, cholesterol levels, smoking and obesity.

Are you at risk for cardiovascular disease? In addition to the risk factors just mentioned, being physically inactive and having Diabetes are other significant risk issues. Activity level is certainly something you can improve for yourself, and while you might not be able to change the fact that you have Diabetes, maintaining careful control of your blood glucose levels is of great importance for cardiovascular health.

Controlling these risk factors could reduce your risk for heart attack or stroke by more than 80 percent.

If you know that you have one or more risk factors for cardiovascular disease, you should know the ABCs that you might act on to help prevent it.

“A” is for aspirin therapy, if it is something your health care provider thinks is important for you. If you are not sure whether you would benefit by this, ask your provider about it first - don’t start taking it on your own! Aspirin therapy is not right for everyone.

“B” is for blood pressure, so know your numbers and whether they need improvement.Normal blood pressure is less than 120 mm Hg and 80 mm Hg (top and bottom numbers respectively).Pre-

hypertension is defined as the top number being between 120-139 mm Hg or the bottom number being between 80-89 mm Hg. Hypertension, aka “high blood pressure,” is defined by the top number being above 140 mm Hg and the bottom number being above 90 mm Hg. There are a number of things that you can do, in addition to accurately taking the medications prescribed by your provider, to improve your blood pressure.

Losing excess weight, eating less salt and maintaining a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy foods are among those actions that give you positive control.

“C” is for cholesterol, and again, it is important for you to know your numbers and whether they tell you that change is needed.

Total cholesterol levels are desirable below 200 mg/ dl, borderline between 200-239 mg/dl, and high over 240 mg/dl. LDL cholesterol levels break out into four groups with optimal levels below 100 mg/ dl, near optimal between 100-129 mg/dl, borderline between 130-159 mg/

Reducing the amount of saturated and trans-fats while increasing the unsaturated fats (to maintain the appropriate percentage of daily calories from fat), increasing the amount of dietary fiber – especially soluble fiber – consumed daily, and increasing soy protein intake are some of the nutritional interventions that can have positive impact on lowering cholesterol risk factors.

Alcohol consumption can influence triglyceride levels, so limiting intake to what is recommended could help. Weight loss is of help here, too, since obesity is correlated to elevated lipid levels.

“S” is for smoking ... if you are a smoker, work toward cessation. Smoking lowers HDL cholesterol – the good kind, which if above 60 mg/dl, can actually negate a heart disease risk factor. Smoking also produces a chemical – acrolein – that interferes with the positive action of HDL cholesterol in the bloodstream as well as contributes to increased oxidation of LDL choles-

Being aware of your own risk factors can help you to develop personal goals, to include exercise, good nutrition, smoking cessation and following your healthcare provider’s specific advice.

A CASCOM agency here received “Army capability development” accolades from Gen. Robert W. Cone, the commanding general of Training and Doctrine Command, during a Jan. 30 ceremony at Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle Requirements Team was among the recipients of the 2012 Team Capability Developer Award.

The agency will be subsequently recognized by Maj. Gen. Larry D. Wyche, CASCOM and Fort Lee commanding general, at a ceremony scheduled for later this month.

Tactical Wheeled Vehicle fleets needed to be updated and modernized. Members of the CASCOM Materiel Systems Directorate, Mobility Division, are working with the other

services to develop a new family of vehicles that will replace the 1980-vintage technology of the existing Humvees; with a new robust set of capabilities, said Fred Wehrli,

division chief.

“The JLTV family of vehicles provides the joint services with multiple platforms and companion trailers to resolve the capability gaps that were identi-

fied in the Ground Combat Forces Light Tactical Mobility arena and meet ‘Force 2020’ joint and Army emerging concepts in terms of movement and maneuver and enabling the combatant commander’s freedom of action,” said Wehrli.

The “gaps” that have been resolved include performance, payload and protection, he noted. These gaps buy back the mobility and payload lost in the past 15 years, when the Army began to increase the armor of the light tactical wheeled vehicle fleet. A plan of action – known as a “Joint Capabilities, Integration and Development System”– developed Army user requirements.

At this stage in the program, the CASCOM Mobility Division team has developed the “Capability D e v e l o p m e n t Document” that was approved in March 2012.

Currently, the JLTV program is in the engineering, manufacturing and demonstration phase of development.

Three companies have contracts to provide prototype variants and companion trailers for testing, said Wehrli.

“The team will continue to work with the Marine Corps to refine the JLTV requirement over the next 18 months,” he said.

“Afterward, a final Capability Production Document is expected to be ready in the January 2015 timeframe.”

To earn the prestigious award, the CASCOM Mobility Division team had to outshine many other TRADOC capability developers, said Wehrli.

“The Capability Developer of the Year Award is a fantastic opportunity for TRADOC to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of its individual and team developers who are making significant contributions to the current and future force by identifying, designing, developing and synchronizing the SEE AWARD, PAGE 8

Honoring a proud 112year history of helping others, Kenner Army Health Clinic celebrated the anniversary of the Army Nurse Corps Friday.

The tribute included a luncheon, remarks by Lt. Col. Richard Prior, deputy commander for nursing at the clinic, and a photo presentation that told the history of the Army Nurse Corps and reflected its tradition of professional and dedicated service.

This annual celebration increases awareness of the contributions and sacrifices made by members of the Army Nurse Corps.

“While we take a look back at where we originated, we also look forward to the challenges ahead of us today and in the future,” said Prior whose words reflected the theme of this year’s an-

As the Army has grown and changed over the years, its corps of military and civilian nurses has expertly adapted to the needs of a transformational force, consistently expanding its roles to support the health care needs of Soldiers and their family members, Prior noted.

“When the Army Nurse Corps was founded in 1901, it was composed of only single white women who lacked uniforms, rank, privileges or any sort of long-term retirement benefits,” he said.

“Since then, Army Nurses have proven their worth in the provision of patient care and have evolved into full spectrum leaders, as exem-

plified by Lt. Gen. Patricia D. Horoho’s selection as the 43rd Army Surgeon General (in December 2011).”

For the nurses at Kenner, the anniversary celebration is a time to reflect on the history of the corps as well as the time-honored tradition of being trusted caregivers, Prior explained. The impact of Army nurses can be seen in every health clinic, combat hospital and major medical facility across the service.

Army nurses have supported every major conflict, from World War I through the current peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan.

“As an Army nurse, I am proud to be part of that legacy,” said Capt. Darci Martinez, nurse manager for Troop Medical Clinic 1. “I take my responsibility as a nurse seriously. I know that our nation entrusts Army nurses to provide compassionate care to their sons and daughters.”

Martinez has been an Army nurse since 2007.

During her career, she has held a variety of positions include service as a medical and surgical nurse and an “Interventional Pain” clinical nurse officer in charge.

“It is a profession that has strengthened my character, diversified my clinical skills and given me courage in knowing that I have a real purpose,” Martinez said.

Of the 82 nurses currently on staff at Kenner, four are retired from military service, one is an Army Reservist and six are activeduty Soldiers.

“We all embrace our role in caring for America’s sons and daughters,” said Martinez. “I work with a caring team of professionals who are experienced and motivated to give everything they can. It’s also rewarding because I learn something new every day and our leadership is very supportive of us.”

Many civilian nurses also attended Friday’s celebration and, according to Angela Allin, a registered nurse in the Wilkerson Pediatric Clinic, they felt a similar sense of pride even though their past experience didn’t include actual military service.

“I enjoy working side-byside with the members of the Army Nurse Corps,” she said. “Their discipline and professionalism supersedes any that I’ve experienced. I admire their commitment to Army Medicine and to making a difference in the lives of military members and their families.”

Lifting a video game or pair of headphones from the exchange may not seem like that big of a deal, but getting caught shoplifting can have a major impact on one’s career, especially in the advanced individual training environment.

Col. Tom Rivard, 59th Ordnance Brigade commander, said his organization takes shoplifting very seriously and has seen 6-8 AIT Soldiers get chaptered out of the Army in the last six months for their crimes.

“While we look at each case on an individual basis, if we can’t trust a Soldier to do the right thing in an AAFES environment, then we consider them for a general discharge,” said Rivard. “The Soldiers are still trainees and haven’t earned a MOS. They are still in a probationary period, and shoplifting can identify them as being non-compatible with Army values.”

Chaptering a Soldier out of the Army for shoplifting isn’t the only punishment available

to the units, but Rivard said if they steal from AAFES, they usually also get caught stealing from their roommate or others in their class.

“At this point in their training, we’ve invested a lot of money into that Soldier,” he said, mentioning it could be tens of thousands of dollars once they’ve made it to AIT. “It’s a tough decision to make.”

Even stealing a small $50 item results in at least an Article 15, said Rivard. If the amount stolen is so high – typically from serial shoplifters – that it reaches a felony level, Soldiers can be courtmartialed.

While a Soldier’s unit is responsible for doling out punishment for their offenses, if a family member is caught shoplifting, they also face criminal charges. As the Traveller reported earlier this month, all AAFES shoplifters are detained and immediately brought to the Provost Marshal Office, and all shoplifters who are apprehended are charged, said Murray Trelford, detective, Military Police Investigations.

Shoplifting is taken very seriously at Fort Lee, especially in the advanced individual training environment. Punishment can range from receiving an Article 15 to being chaptered out of the military. If the amount stolen reaches the felony range, the Soldier can be court martialed.

When Soldiers, including AIT students, are apprehended, a military police report is generated and commanders take action. When family members get caught, they face either misdemeanor or felony charges. Adult dependants must appear in front of the U.S. Magistrate Court in Richmond and juveniles face the Juvenile Hearing Board on Fort Lee. Trelford said 72 shoplifters – 33 military, 32 family members and seven civilians – were apprehended last year, and all from the AAFES environment.

“Shoplifting is a crime of greed,” he said. “This type of crime can and does occur at different times and locations. AAFES is just an area of opportunity for that type of crime.”

It’s unfortunate that Soldiers take the opportunity to steal, said Rivard.

“It’s a case where a Soldier has an opportunity to join the best Army in the world, we’re about to give them a profession where they are going to make a difference, and then they elect to do something stupid like steal,” he said.

ing brief, Rivard said he takes time to go over things that are incompatible with the Army lifestyle, including shoplifting.

“We want to prevent shoplifting,” he said. “I want these Soldiers to stay in the Army, and I want them to earn a MOS and contribute to their enlistment contract.

“The Army values matter, no matter your rank or background,” Rivard continued.

“They apply to all of us. To be part of a profession means to accept certain ethical standards and it’s uncompromising.”

Kenner No Shows Kenner Army Health Clinic is working to decrease its number of “no shows” or people who fail to show up for or cancel an appointment. A scheduled appointment can be canceled by calling 1-866-533-5242 at any time. Clients are asked to cancel appointments at least 24 hours in advance or as soon as they know they will not be able to keep an appointment.

When appointments are canceled, Kenner is able to move another Soldier, family member or retiree into the time slots. “No shows” reduce the productivity of the health care provider teams. Lee bandsman earns award Ray Kozakewicz Production Assistant

Spc. Kevin Ward, a member of Fort Lee’s 392nd Army Band, loves music and playing his tuba but is even more enamoured with the Army and serving his country.

For his dedication, the Soldier was recently awarded the distinguished 2012 Col. Finley R. Hamilton Outstanding Military Musician Award.

The award acknowledges the leadership qualities and musical excellence of Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard enlisted musicians. It also honors the memory of Hamilton, who served 35 years in the Army Band Program, retiring from service as commander and conductor of the

U.S. Army Field Band. He succumbed to cancer while serving as president of the National Band Association in 2009.

“I had no clue that I was nominated and was surprised by the selection,” said Ward, who began playing the trombone in high school in West Tennessee. “I am honored to be recognized, and it’s nice to know that the leaders think so highly of me. Just to be nominated would have been enough. This also is a tribute to our band here.”

Ward said that while in high school, the band director suggested he join the group to play the trombone since he had long arms.

After learning to play the trombone, he heard the band needed a tuba player. He was up to the challenge and be-

came an all-state instrumentalist and wanted to become a high school band director himself.

He has now played the tuba for nearly 13 years and still plays the trombone every now and then.

“I like playing and arranging all types of music and performing at the many events here,” Ward said.

He said he also is proud of his job as a supply clerk and helping the other bandsmen with equipment and instrument details to keep the band working smoothly.

“We’re like a family and depend on each other during performances,” Ward said.

“We band together.”

A better Soldier than Ward could not have been chosen for the honor, said the band’s 1st Sgt. Santos

Godineaux.

“He’s a real asset to the Army and he’s proactive in all he does,” he said.

Godineaux, who has played the tuba for nearly 25 years, salutes the specialist’s leadership skills and his ability to motivate other bandsmen. “He even makes me work harder at times and offers suggestions while I am practicing,” he said.

After receiving undergraduate and master’s degrees, Ward became a high school band director at a public high school and then a private school in West Memphis. While he loved teaching and helping students as a band director, he said he had a higher goal of serving in the Army and playing in an Army band.

when I told them I planned to enlist but were supportive,” said Ward, who especially credits his mother for supporting his musical education. “She worked three jobs to help me stay in the band.”

Ward’s future goals are to become an officer and Army Band director.

Like all histories, that of the Black American is storied, complicated and filled with triumph and tragedy. The following vignettes are reflections on the diversity of the past and how Black Americans have impacted the present.

The intent of President Harry S. Truman’s Executive Order 9981was to end segregation in the U.S. Armed Forces, not only on the grounds that it was inefficient but it was the right thing to do. EO 9981, however, didn’t solve issues related to race but rather laid a foundation for better race relations and subsequently a more effective fighting force.

It must be pointed out that Truman took an enormous risk in signing the order. A proclaimed son of Confederates, Truman was also a progressive who was moved by reports of violence committed against black veterans who fought for their country during World War II. He knew it was the right decision and stood by it, just as he did when he ousted the popular war hero Gen. Douglas McArthur. It was with the same sense of audacity that he issued the order on July 26, 1948. The ground breaking policy caused an uproar among the ranks. The president, however, was undaunted yet patient and understanding. He realized that such a policy couldn’t immediately change attitudes and had enough forethought to make accommodations for an orderly, reasonable transition. He was insistent as well.

When the Secretary of the Army failed to follow his directives a year after the order was signed, he was forced to retire. It was not until 1953, the final year of Truman’s administration, that the armed forces seemed well on its way to integration. The last all-black units were gone by 1954, roughly six years after EO 9981 was signed.

Jackie Robinson was not the first African-American to break the color barrier in major league baseball. It is fact if it’s applied to the modern era. The absolute distinction belongs to Moses Fleetwood Walker. In 1884, the Ohio native played catcher for the Toledo Blue Stockings of the American Association, a major league at that time that often competed with the National League for baseball dominance.

Joe Louis is best remembered as the “Brown Bomber,” a boxer who possessed unparalleled physical powers that led him to defeat German Max Schmeling in a 1938 bout that united the country and came to symbolize America’s resolve to stand firm against a

But there was more to Louis than his punching power. He enlisted in the Army in January 1942, and the service employed the Alabama native to recruit blacks and to boost morale among all troops. Louis experienced racism while he was a Soldier but was grounded enough to look at the big picture, once remarking,” Lots of things wrong with America, but Hitler ain’t going to fix them.”

He also was conscious of his status and used it to better the lives of blacks serving in the military. Louis helped baseball great Jackie Robinson and others to gain entrance into officer candidate school. In 1952, the retired boxer, also an avid golfer, challenged a whites-only policy to play in a Professional Golf Association tournament being held in San Diego. He rounded up supporters and submitted a petition to the governor of California. The governor sided with Louis, and the PGA allowed him to play, making the Brown Bomber the first black to play in a PGA-sanctioned event.

When Africans arrived on the coasts of America in the early 1600s, much of their culture was systematically repressed by the institution of slavery and servitude. The Gullah, who live in communities situated along the sea islands of South Carolina and Georgia, are an exception. Aspects of its culture – language, art, music and agricultural methods – still exist today, making it possibly the only African culture left intact after the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade.

Unlike most African-Americans, the

Gullah can trace its roots back to specific regions of Africa. For example, the Gullah’s sweetgrass basketry is similar to coiled baskets made by the Senegalese, and cloth made from its strip looms bare resemblance to the cloth made by traditional strips looms used throughout Africa. Furthermore, many of the words used in Gullah communities are variations of words still used in Africa today.

How did the Gullah culture survive when virtually all others were extinguished? The history books provide a clear explanation: in the South Carolina and Georgia low country, as it is called, rice was the chief crop. To produce it, slaves were given some measure of autonomy during the rainy seasons due to harsh conditions and diseases such as Malaria and yellow fever. Slave owners tended to live elsewhere and left management operations up to slave overseers who were much more lenient in their management practices.

Today, the Gullah culture has somewhat evolved, but modern threats such as land development and economic conditions have forced some descendents to leave. Successful legislature to preserve and protect the sea island culture has given some measure of assurance the Gullahs will continue to survive.

Rosa Parks is often called the mother of the modern civil rights movement because she refused in November 1955 to yield her seat to a white on a segregated Montgomery, Ala., bus. Her act of defiance led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott that brought the public bus system to its knees and was the catalyst behind further protests and demon-

strations that pushed the movement into high gear.

Though Parks’ actions were momentous, they were not the first. In fact, at least three other women performed the same actions with less-celebrated results. The first, 27-year-old Irene Morgan of Baltimore refused to give up her seat to a white couple on an interstate Greyhound bus 11 years earlier in Middlesex County. The case went before the Supreme Court, and it ruled in her favor.

The case of Sarah Louise Keys followed.

A private in the Women’s Army Corps, she took an interstate bus from Fort Dix, N.J., headed toward her North Carolina home on the night of Aug. 1, 1952. At a stop in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., she refused to surrender her seat to a Marine and was eventually arrested and convicted. Her case was brought before the courts and the Interstate Commerce Commission. The latter ruled in 1955 that actions against Key violated the Interstate Commerce Act that prohibited segregation.

Another woman, Claudette Colvin, was merely a 15-year-old when she defied orders to give up her seat on a Montgomery public bus in March of 1955. She too was arrested and convicted and her case was also handled by the NAACP, which took it all the way to the Supreme Court in the Browder v. Gayle case. The court on May 11, 1956, ruled in favor of Colvin, but the NAACP decided not to promote the case because of Colvin’s age and the fact that she was young, unwed and pregnant, which violated the social norms of the time.

Gen. Benjamin O. Davis Jr., Tuskegee Airman and first black general in the U.S. Air Force, didn’t start his military career as an airman. The son of Brig. Gen. Benjamin O. Davis Sr., the Army’s first black general, earned a degree at West Point, underwent infantry training and followed his father’s footsteps into the Buffalo Soldiers (24th Infantry Regiment). Most noteworthy was Davis’ West Point experience in which classmates rarely spoke to or dined with him and where he roomed alone for the duration of his four years there. The academy tested the depths of Davis’ commitment to his cause, but he emerged more determined to prove his worth and would go on to command the Airmen in World War II. More than 30 years after Davis’ retirement, President Bill Clinton acknowledged his sacrifices, promoting him to the rank of general. “General Davis,” he said, “is here today as living proof that a person can

9:0 VSRWOLJKWV OHWWHUV IURP ZDU “Letters from the Battlefield,” an exhibit of personal correspondence between those serving in the armed forces and loved ones back home, will be on display through Feb. 25 at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond.

From tissue-thin “V-mails” sent by Soldiers and Sailors serving in Europe or the Pacific during World War II, to letters jotted in ballpoint pen in the steamy jungles of Vietnam, to emails sent from American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, the often emotional words express the joys, fears and loneliness of those men and women who are frequently far from the comforts of home.

“The majority of the correspondence on display comes from the Memorial’s archives and even from the attics of some of our volunteers,” noted Kyndall Drumheller, the Virginia War Memorial education assistant, who worked with the Memorial’s curator Jesse Smith to assemble the special exhibit.

Drumheller noted that it was an emotional experience choosing the letters and electronic correspondence to be included.

“You feel like you know the person who is writing,” she said. “I was especially touched by the letters that three brothers from Beaverdam (Hanover County), who were each serving overseas during World War

II, wrote to their mother – especially as one of the brothers was killed in action and never made it home.”

“Letters from the Battlefield,” which is sponsored by Woody Funeral Homes, will be on display in the Virginia American Legion Exhibit Hall located in the Paul and Phyllis Galanti Education Center. The War Memorial is located at 621 South Belvidere Street, Richmond. There is no charge for admission or parking.

AThe recent fire here that resulted in the deaths of two individuals underscores the importance of staying vigilant in the kitchen. The National Fire Protection Association and Fort Lee Fire and Emergency Services urges everyone to use caution while cooking, In 2010, cooking was involved in an estimated 156,400 home structure fires that were reported to U.S. fire departments, according to the NFPA. These fires caused 420 deaths, 5,310 injuries and $993 million in direct property damage. Cooking caused 44 percent of reported home fires, 16 percent of home fire deaths, 40 percent of home fire injuries, and 15 percent of the direct property damage in 2010.

Facts and figures Based on 2006-2010 annual averages: • Unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in these fires.

• Two-thirds of home cooking fires started with the ignition of food or other cooking materials.

• Clothing was the item first ignited in less than 1 percent of these fires, but these incidents accounted for 16 percent of the

cooking fire deaths.

• Ranges accounted for the largest share (58 percent) of home cooking fire incidents.

Ovens accounted for 16 percent.

• Three out of every five reported non-fatal home cooking fire injuries occurred when the victims tried to fight the fire themselves.

• Frying poses the greatest risk of fire. and Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires.

Keep the stove top, burners and oven clean. Wear short, close-fitting or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking. Loose clothing can dangle onto stove burners and can catch fire if it comes in contact with a gas flame or an electric burner.

What to do in case of a cooking fire Always keep a lid nearby when you are cooking. If a small grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by carefully sliding the lid over the pan. Turn off the burner. Do not move the pan.

To keep the fire from restarting, leave the lid on until the pan is

completely cool. Never pour water on a cooking pan grease fire. Never discharge a portable fire extinguisher directly into a cooking pan grease fire because it will spread the flames.

In case of an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed until it is cool. After a fire, the oven should be checked and/or serviced before being used again. When in doubt, just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire. After you leave, call 9-1-1 or 734-7400 from a cell phone or a neighbor’s telephone.

If you know how to use a portable fire extinguisher and decide to fight the fire, be sure others are already getting out and that you have a clear path to the way out.

Keep children, pets away from cooking areas Have a “kid-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried. Never hold a child while you are cooking, drinking a hot liquid, or carrying hot foods or liquids. Keep pets off cooking surfaces and nearby countertops to prevent them from knocking things onto the burner.

Ann Easterling’s head tilts slightly to the side and her eyes drift into a dreamy state as she slips into thoughts about the past.

“They were little boys, I was in my 20s, and I watched them grow,” said the post theater volunteer, recalling her time years ago working with two youngsters just starting out in the theater.

“I’ve taken such pride in the fact that they still write me and say ‘being at the Lee Playhouse started me on this job that love’ or ‘The best times of my life were had at the Lee Playhouse.’

“I’m very proud that we have profoundly affected so many people.”

That might be considered the legacy of the Lee Playhouse – a conglomeration of a post World War II physical structure, a source of dreams and aspirations for many of its participants, and the means, through the power and spirit of theater, to bring people together. The latter has a powerful, resonating impact, said Lee Farmer, longtime playhouse affiliate.

“I’d like to think that we’re goodwill ambassadors in this community,” said the current volunteer and former Family and MWR Business Operations Division chief. “You’ve got military members, family members and the off post community coming in here so that ties the community together. That’s what people love about it.

We’ve got actors who want to come here and perform for free only because they like this family/ community environment here. It is like a family.

They love it, and they keep coming back.”

The Lee Playhouse, located on Mahone Avenue next to Burger King, is the first and oldest brick building on the installation. It has been used extensively for training purposes and formerly hosted Army and Air Force Exchange Service movies for years until it was forced

to cease operations due to a lack of ticket sales, said Farmer. The facility began theater operations in 1995.

Today the Lee Playhouse is home to the Theater Company at Fort Lee, a nonprofit created to support eager thespians and theater-lovers here. Easterling, president of the TCFL board of directors and a tireless volunteer, said she has worked with theater groups throughout the local area but Fort Lee’s is unique.

“I like the fact that this particular program does include people of all talent levels and experience, and it just brings people together from all walks of life, who have a shared goal of entertaining the community,” she said.

Easterling added that the TCFL prides itself on the fact that its also a teaching theater, a place where novices can dive into the craft and

allow their ambitions to t dictate how far they want to go.

“We do a couple of shhows a year where children take the stage,” shee said. “They’re learning from the directors, chor eographers and musical directors we hire. A lot of kids graduate, if you will, and move up to the t main stage productions. Some do it for thee fun of it and it’s done.

Some go off to collegee and study art, drama,

dance or music.”

The post theater group is technically a community theater, meaning the players and most of the behindthe-scenes support personnel work on a volunteer basis. Up to 125 different volunteers may be involved with one show, doing everything from acting or dancing to helping build props, operate lights and decorate sets. Playhouse volunteers average 33,000 hours annually and keep coming back year after year, said Farmer. “(It’s) a lot of blood, sweat and tears,” he

said. “If we didn’t have a sense of community here, this theater would have been closed because the actors who get paid at other places wouldn’t bother to do it free for us.”

Theater work is infectious, said Farmer. The work and talent contributed to the collective theater effort is showcased at show time, when the air is full of enthusiasm and anticipation.

Those moments, along with the reaction of the audience after the final curtain, is what theater supporters live for.

“I can sand up in the back of the auditorium at the end of the play, and I can see the smiles on

peoples’ faces as they leave,” said Farmer. “If its only two or three hours, it takes their minds off of the problems of the world. They’re here for entertainment and enjoyment and they leave with a smile on their face. That’s the actor’s pay, and you can’t beat that.”

The post theater group hopes to draw even larger crowds in the comparison to its previous performances when it opens “Angel Street” Friday evening, the third of five plays scheduled for the 2012-13 theater season. It is based on the script for “Gaslight” and directed by Richmond’s Joy Williams. It runs through Feb. 24 with Friday and Saturday shows starting at 8 p.m. and a Sunday matinee at 3 p.m. All shows are open to the public.

The next show scheduled at the playhouse is a Kidkapers youth production. Auditions for the show begin Feb. 16.

The 266th Quartermaster Battalion recognized the outstanding accomplishments of 21 Soldiers and government civilians during its monthly awards ceremony Friday. Among the top achievers were Staff Sgt. WASHINGTON – Secretary of the Army John McHugh Monday directed that programs from resilience training to suicide prevention be part of a wide-ranging “Ready and Resilient Campaign” plan, which will launch later this month.

During a press conference at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., McHugh said he’s looked at 47 recommendations from an Army-wide Behavioral Health Task Force, which he stood up last year.

While McHugh said findings of the task force have not yet been staffed and are not yet ready for release, he did divulge one of the recommendations: that all programs dealing with resilience come under a single command authority, the G-1 or Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel.

“They felt the disparity of command authority over all of these various programs tended to diffuse things rather than make them more accessible,” McHugh

said of the Behavioral Health Task Force recommendations.

He explained that the abundance of programs, and redundancy of services, could sometimes be confusing, making it difficult for commanders or Soldiers to know where to turn.

In order to eliminate that confusion, McHugh signed a memorandum Monday directing that “multiple efforts and programs” be integrated and synchronized under the Army Ready and Resilient Campaign plan, or R2C. The programs will include those aimed at eliminating sexual assault and sexual harassment, bullying and hazing, substance abuse, domestic violence and any stigmas or barriers associated with seeking help, according to the memo.

McHugh charged Under Secretary of the Army Joseph Westphal, Ph.D., and Vice Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III to finalize plans for the campaign and present them to him by Feb. 15. The campaign “must be a top priority for all Army leaders,” the secretary said.

The R2C will make improve-

ments to the Integrated Disability Evaluation System, known as IDES, and shorten case-processing times, according to the memorandum. And it will improve methods to help leaders understand high-risk behaviors that could lead to suicide.

The campaign will make resilience training a key part of all professional military education, according to the establishing memo. And it will promote healthy lifestyles that are based on the triad of physical fitness, nutrition and sleep.

Finally, the campaign will strive to eliminate stigma that might keep Soldiers from seeking treatment for post-traumatic stress or brain injuries.

“We’re trying to teach Soldiers it’s OK to reach out for help,” McHugh said. “You don’t just do that in a class or two to a young Soldier. It really has to be a career-long progression.”

The R2C will seek to institutionalize education to promote resilience and build it into professional military instruction at various levels of a Soldier’s career, McHugh said.

McHugh lamented the record 325 suicides committed by Soldiers last year. “All of us in the Army are deeply concerned about this,” he said.

His announcement was made at Joint Base Lewis-McChord because his Army-wide Behavioral Health Task Force review was

initiated as a result of Soldiers and veterans there having posttraumatic stress disorders diagnoses downgraded last year at Madigan Army Medical Center.

McHugh said the problems stemmed from a “forensic diagnosis” method which is no longer used in the Army. Forensic diagnosis is a “legitimate” procedure, McHugh said, but one that analysis found to be “not workable” in the Army.

The Tuskegee Airmen was arguably the most well-known black military unit of World War II. Comparatively, the Army’s 761st Tank Battalion and its exploits are quite obscure. Called the “Black Panthers” way before the militant group adopted the name, the 761st became the first black tankers to fight in any war, enduring 183 consecutive days of operational employment in the European theater. Much of that time was marked by intense combat, and the Panthers often fought alongside white infantry units even though the armed forces were still segregated. Jackie Robinson was a member of the 761st prior to being kicked out for refusing to give up his seat on a bus during training. Another member, Staff Sgt. Rueben Rivers, was posthumously awarded the Medal

of Honor in 1997. Twenty-four Panthers were killed and 88 were wounded during the war.

The unit’s motto was “Come Out Fighting.”

In the annals of African American history, there have been many efforts on behalf of blacks to escape their conditions in America. One during the American Revolution, centered on an offer by the British to grant freedom to any blacks who would join its ranks. Roughly 100,000 freemen and slaves moved to the British side and many wound up in southeastern Canada after the war. Furthermore, thousands of slaves who used the Underground Railroad to escape bondage also found their fates in Canada. Today, thousands of black Canadians can trace their heritage back to the United States.

Another effort of note, organized by the American Colonization Society starting in 1816, was based on the premise that slavery couldn’t be sustained in America and blacks could lead better lives in Africa. With the help of the U.S. government, ships carrying mostly free black emigrants began sailing for the shores of Africa in 1821, eventually estab-

lishing the country of Liberia. The voyages continued until the 1860s. By that time, more than 11,000 blacks had carved out a civilization in the land of their ancestors. Norfolkborn J.J. Roberts, who spent part of his boyhood in Petersburg, became Liberia’s first president in 1847.

For the most part, slavery destroyed the ancestral lineage of AfricanAmericans by the millions. As a result, many find it is quite difficult to trace family lines beyond three or four generations.

That’s not the case for the descendents of Abdu-l-Rahman Ibrahim Ibn Sori or Abdul Rahman. An African prince, he was brought to America in 1788. His talents were such that he became a trusted overseer of slaves on the Natchez, Miss., plantation of Thomas Foster.

During his time at the plantation, AbdulRahman became acquainted with a Dr. John Cox, a surgeon who was aided by AbdulRahman’s family after he and crew members were shipwrecked off the coast of Guinea.

Cox lobbied for Abdul-Rahman’s release to no avail. Abdul-Rahman joined the effort as well, writing a letter to Senator Thomas Reed in Washington. The letter, written in Arabic, was forwarded to the U.S. Consulate

in Morocco. The sultan of that country read the letter and requested Abdul-Rahman’s release. Abdul-Rahman was eventually released and began a campaign to raise funds to purchase the freedom of family members. In the end, he could purchase only two of his nine children. Abdul-Rahman did return to Africa by way of the American Colonization Society but never saw the remaining family members. In 2006, the descendents of Abdul-Rahman held a reunion that was made part of a PBS documentary about the prince’s life. Curiously, several of his relatives carry either the first or last name of “Prince.”

The first Southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation took place on the campus of what is now Hampton University in Hampton. Located three miles from Fort Monroe, the 98-feet-indiameter Southern Live Oak is the place where contrabands from the post were taught during the Civil War. The reading of the Emancipation Proclamation took place there in 1863. The tree has been named one of the 10 Great Trees of the World by the National Geographic Society.

Free Support Groups | Ongoing | Wednesdays The James House offers several costfree, confidential support groups in the local area. The non-profit agency provides support, advocacy and education for people in the Tri-Cities area of Virginia affected by sexual violence, domestic violence and stalking, to empower them to become healthy, safe and self-sufficient.

An “Empower Women” group for those

who have experienced domestic or sexual violence meets on Wednesdays, 6:30-7:30 p.m., and continues through March 20.

The next meeting is Feb. 13. Concurrent with this group, there will be sessions for children who have witnessed violence in their homes.

A 10-week group for adult male survivors of childhood sexual abuse will be held on Tuesdays, 6-7:30 p.m. starting Feb. 19 and continuing through April 23.

A group for women who have experienced sexual violence meets Mondays from 6-7:30 p.m., continues through March 25.

A group for Spanish-speaking women affected by violence at home is held on Tuesdays from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Registration is required for all support groups.
