Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen have an uncanny ability and opportunity to change the world around them. Our training, discipline, honor and leadership skills give us an edge that the majority of the rest of the world does not even know.

So often we look around us waiting for others to take charge and make a difference in society. We often underestimate our abilities to influence others.

I often look around me and see those who are upset about the systems in place. They have an innate ability to sour everyone around them and to simply MRLQ WKRVH ZKR FRPSODLQ DERXW WKH SUREOHP *HWWLQJ everyone around us angry destroys opportunities for diplomacy.

Loyalty, Discipline, Respect, Selfless Service,

F&ES Receives New Truck, Honors Traditions

Fort Lee firefighters gathered at Fire Station No. 2 Jan. 20 to place a new 2011 100-foot aerial platform fire truck into service for the first time.

During the early-morning ceremony, the new fire truck was commissioned with American Fire Service traditions that have been in place since the 1830s. The parts of the ceremony included the blessing of the truck, transfer of equipment, washing the wheels and pushing the truck into the station for the first time.

Station Chief Brion Bear conducted a blessing of the new aerial ladder truck and all firefighters who will ride the apparatus throughout this fire truck’s service life.

Fire Captain Max Andrucci and his company transferred their turnout gear from the current Truck 9, a 1991 100-foot aerial ladder truck, to the new aerial fire truck designated “Truck 10.” This part of the ceremony represented that there is no break in the trust and ability to provide firefighting services to the community. He then led his personnel in washing the truck wheels. This tradition is from the times when fire truck

wheels were the made of wood and washing the wheels kept them from drying out, and the apparatus was cleaned each time it was backed into a fire station. A clean and well-maintained fire truck signaled to the public that the firefighters were ready at a moment’s notice.

Afterward, the F&ES firefighters and officers gathered at the front and sides of the new truck to push it into its assigned bay for the first time. In the early days of the fire service, the horse-drawn fire apparatus had to be pushed back into the fire station each time after a call, since the horses could not back up.

“Truck 10” is the first new vehicle the department has received in more than a decade, said Fire Chief Tom Bahr.

“The change is very significant when you compare ’90s technology to today’s standards,” said Bahr. “The safety features provided will protect the personnel responding and operating at an emergency scene, such as roll over protection and an air bag system in the rare incident of an accident. It will ensure that they are able to go home after each shift.”

Military Working Dog Kondi Retires with Soldiers

Military Working Dog Kondi celebrated the start of a new chapter in her life Jan. 26 as part of the bimonthly installation retirement ceremony.

Kondi, an 8-year-old German shepherd trained in patrol narcotics detection, spent six years working with Fort Lee military police and other dogs trained to assist Army operations.

“Kondi was a major asset to the Fort Lee Military Working Dog section,” said Staff Sgt. David Timmerman II, Plans noncommissioned officer, 217th Military Police Detachment. “She had more than 10 confirmed narcotic finds, one of which resulted in 30 grams of marijuana being seized and removed from the Fort Lee community. Kondi’s detection skills always exceeded the standards set by the

Department of the Army and always resulted in a 98 percent first-time certification rate – with three different handlers.”

While stationed at Fort Lee, Kondi patrolled the streets, training areas and barracks always ensuring the safety of the community, Timmerman said.

“She often assisted in searches for fleeing suspects during her service,” Timmerman said.

When she was 3 years old, Kondi participated in the inaugural Training and Doctrine Command Military Working Dog Warrior Police Challenge hosted at Fort Lee. She was a member of 36 dog teams representing all branches of the military during the competition.

She also won second place in the 2008 Military District of Washington Dog Competition’s narcotic detection event.

“Kondi received Top Dog (military), first place in narcotics detection

and helped the Fort Lee team earn Top Kennel. She always worked hard,” said Timmerman.

About two years ago, Timmerman said, Kondi began to lose focus and she was diagnosed with arthritis.

“She often endured a lot of pain during the last few years of her service but continued to put forth an outstanding effort to do her job,” he said.

During the ceremony, Kondi continued to show discipline despite many distractions. The auditorium was nearly standing room only.

Many Fort Lee community members came out to support the retiring Soldiers – some wanted to get a glimpse at the first MWD to be retired during the official ceremony for Fort Lee military personnel.

Facebook Question Captures Community Interest

“Establishing an emergency room or urgent care center on post” is the most “liked” response thus far to the question “If you could change one thing about Fort Lee, what would it be?” posted recently on the installation’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ArmyFortLee).

Many community members on the popular social media site also expressed an interest in building schools on post and opening the commissary on Mondays. One individual suggested a recreational vehicle/camping area here. A fan named Mary Arias Sanden proposed a family gym with free or low-cost childcare. Around 40 individuals have commented to date, with their suggestions collectively earning more than 100 approving thumbs-up.

“We’re always pleased when the community contributes their thoughts and ideas through venues like the installation’s Facebook page and ICE, the customer evaluation system that can be accessed through the link on the Fort Lee website,” said Stephen Baker, deputy director of the Garrison Public Affairs Office here. Baker is the administrator for the installation Facebook page.

“The response to that one simple question on Facebook is also significant because it shows the abundance of great ideas that can be found in our community,” Baker added.

“Every one of us has something to contribute to the qual-

ity of customer service here. Who better than a user can say ‘this works well or that needs to be changed?’ The key is to speak up and share your thoughts through the feedback mechanisms that are readily available.”

Michelle Hodge, the spouse of Maj. Gen. James L. Hodge, CASCOM and Fort Lee commanding general, is an avid Facebook user and participated in the discussion the question sparked. She reminded participants of the annual Army Family Action Plan conference here.

AFAP is the service’s “grassroots process to identify and elevate the most significant quality of life issues impacting Soldiers (all components), retirees, Department of the Army Civilians and Families to senior leaders for action,” according to the website www.myarmyonesource.com.

“These are some great suggestions and I … would encourage you to turn them in for the Army Family Action Plan conference in the fall,” Hodge wrote in her comment. “They can then hopefully be discussed and sent forward for consideration. Many were already issues and concerns addressed (in 2011), like the commissary being open on Monday.

Community members can still comment on the question, which was posted on Facebook Jan. 20. Baker noted that the ideas shared there are only meant to generate dis-

“The ArmyFortLee page on Facebook is worth a look if you haven’t been there before,” Baker said. “On top of the regular news updates, photos, videos and important notices, it really helped our Families and community members to stay connected during the earthquake and hurricane last year. They not only got critical updates directly from us on the page, but also turned to each other for help, information and support – and that’s what a real community is all about.”

More than 2,200 people have “liked” the installation’s Facebook page since its launch in June, and Baker said the burgeoning community is still growing quickly.

Fort Lee Tests Earthquake Preparedness by the drill, earthquakes do occur in our area and we should be as prepared as possible.�

According to the U.S. Geographical Survey, decades could pass before Virginians experience another earthquake, but there were periods in the commonwealth’s history when incidents were closer together. In 1897 and 1898, many tremors were felt throughout Virginia – months apart from each other – although many were likely aftershocks. “Most people on Fort Lee didn’t know how to respond to the earthquake last August,� said Horton. “Not that they should – Fort Lee isn’t in a very active seismic area. That’s why we are taking this opportunity to use this drill to make everyone aware of how to prepare for an earthquake.�

During the drill – and in any actual earthquake – the correct procedure depends on one’s location. If within a building, everyone should “Drop, Cover and Hold On!� Ducking under a desk and holding on should provide some shelter, said Horton. Stay away from windows if possible. Another safety rule to keep in mind is never to use an elevator after an earthquake until it’s been checked for safety.

If you are outside during the event, find a clear spot away from buildings, trees and electric lines. If you are in a vehicle, slow down and pull over to a spot away from buildings, trees and electric lines. Stay in the vehicle until the shaking stops.

A year ago, most Virginia residents would have scoffed at the notion of earthquake preparedness. The seismic event in August, however, probably changed a lot of minds and being prepared for a future quake is a little higher on the priority list.

Many have misconceptions of what is actually safe during an earthquake, said Horton. “Methods like standing in a doorway, running outside and the ‘triangle of life’ are considered dangerous and are not recommended,� he said. “Doorways are not any safer than any other part of modern-day structures. Running outside brings people near windows and walls, the most dangerous area during an earthquake.

The ‘triangle of life’ is a recent falsehood sent around in email. It falsely concludes that it is safer to get next to a table rather than under it as well as others. This is NOT the case and it is definitely safer to ‘Drop, Cover and Hold On!’�

During an earthquake, those with physical disabilities should make every attempt to “Drop, Cover and Hold On,� said Horton. If they are unable to do so, they should at least protect their head with a pillow or their arms and bend over to protect themselves.

Keeping these safety actions in mind during an earthquake can save lives, said Horton. “We all hope that we do not ever really need to use any actions for emergencies, but it is definitely wise to be prepared for any and every possibility,� he said. “Earthquakes can and do occur everywhere in the world. You never know when one will occur or how strong it will be, but knowing what to do before, during and after can save your life.�

Circus Celebrates ‘Year of the Dragon’ Few activities in a family’s life are more awe-inspiring and magical than a trip to the circus. It’s the place where acrobats perform amazing feats of strength and dexterity, trapeze artists fly through the air with the greatest of ease and animal trainers work side by side with great beasts in the center ring.

Everyone in central Virginia will have an opportunity to experience one of the most well-known circus spectacles in the industry today when the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey show comes to the Richmond Coliseum Feb. 15-19.

The title of this year’s tour is “DRAGONS.” The Barnum & Bailey website describes it as a “combination of myth and majesty.” It features tribes from the far reaches of the earth who are brought together in a single performance to display their breathtaking skills in a circus tournament of champions. Each tribe must prove they have the virtues of courage, strength, wisdom and heart to arouse the dragons that will appear “right before your

very eyes.”

A tribute to the Chinese year of the Dragon, the show will feature everything that’s wonderful about the circus – animal acts, motorcycle stunts, acrobatic skill, comedy routines, and a high-wire cast demonstrating genuine bravery and athleticism.

Of course, Richmond Coliseum will complete the experience with its ample offerings of stadium food, including cotton candy and other kid favorites.

The coliseum is located at 601 Leigh St., Richmond.

Shows are scheduled at various times throughout the fiveday visit.

Dental Observance Begins on Post

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month.

During this observance, the dental community is focusing on children and their dental health. It is never too early to establish good habits and positive attitudes in children about taking care of their teeth. This will be critical in maintaining good oral health throughout their lives.

This month-long awareness event started more than 70 years ago. The first National Children’s Dental Health observance was a one-day event (Feb. 3, 1941) in Cleveland.

During that same year, Feb. 3-7 was designated as Children’s Dental Health Week in Akron, Ohio.

The American Dental Association held the first national observance of Children’s Dental Health Day on Feb. 8, 1949. The single-day observance became a week long event in 1955. In 1981, the program was extended to a month-long celebration know today as National Children’s Dental Health Month.

Throughout this month, the Fort Lee Dental Clinic Command will provide articles on various topics including being prepared for a dental emergency; sipping, snacking and tooth decay; mouth guards; and oral piercing: not as safe as you think. In addition, many of the children attending the post child development centers will receive a short program on dental health.

This year’s theme is “Rock Your Smile.” Everyone’s oral health is important. Help your children learn more about theirs.

‘King and I’ Coming to Lee The Theater Company at Fort Lee will open its 2012 Mainstage season with performances of the renowned musical The King and I at the Lee Theater. The show opens Saturday, Feb. 18, and runs for six performances: Feb. 18, 25 and March 4 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 19, 26 and March 5 at 3 p.m.

The theater is on Mahone Avenue next to Burger King.

With music by Richard Rodgers and a script and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, the musical premiered on Broadway in 1951. Based on the 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon, which itself is based on the memoirs of the real Anna Leonowens, this musical follows Anna as she becomes the governess to the children of King Mongkut in the early 1860s. She comes to Siam looking to westernize its people, but she finds in time that they have just as much to teach her. Memorable songs include “Getting to Know You,” “Hello, Young Lovers,” “A Puzzlement” and “Shall We Dance?”

A Fort Lee Soldier who’s been singing all his life is a step closer to his dream of joining the 2012 U.S. Army Soldier Show cast and crew. Spc. Sylvester J. L. Allen is among 29 semi-finalists who are on active duty or serving in the Army Reserve or National Guard.

A tuba player and vocalist, Allen has been assigned to the 392nd Army Band since August 2010. He learned Jan. 25 that he is one of the Soldiers chosen to participate in the live audition process at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Feb. 18-25.

Allen made an audition tape last year following a 2011 Soldier Show performance at Fort Eustis. He sang “Wheels of a Dreams” from “Ragtime,” his favorite show.

Allen, 26, hails from Greensboro, N.C., where he attended Greensboro College for more than three years. His initial aspiration was to study the tuba. However, with the encouragement of faculty members, Allen auditioned for the vocal program, changed his major and began studying opera.

A lyric tenor, Allen was soon smitten with musical theater. He now plans to return to college to complete a degree in musical theater after transitioning later this year from active to reserve duty with the 208th Reserve Band in Concord, N.C. Allen is passionate about becoming part of the Soldier Show. “I’m completely determined to be one of those peo-

ple” selected for the cast and crew, he said.

The nine-month Soldier Show tour would be a major stepping stone to a career in musical theater, said Allen, so he’ll be heading to San Antonio with his focus clearly on his future.

Allen is also passionate about hitting a note just so and moving an audience emotionally. “It gives me chills,” he said.

Performing leaves him with “a good type of exhaustion” – physical, mental and emotional – and a sense of satisfaction that comes with being an expert in his field.

Allen began his vocal training as a child participating in church choirs – sometimes as many as three at a time, he said. Church choirs schooled him in gospel music. As a college student, he sang the role of Lazar Wolf, the butcher, in a production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” He was also in the cast of “The Secret Garden.”

In addition to his singing and instrumental chops, Allen has experience backstage. During college productions he also worked with lights, sound, costumes and props, he said.

Among the singers Allen admires are Broadway leading man Brian Stokes Mitchell, Mandy Patinkin and the late Luther Vandross.

Once in San Antonio, Allen and the other semi-finalists will spend a week in training to prepare for the live auditions before a panel of 12 professional judges.

Home Alone?

Birth to 5th grade: Never. Direct supervision is required at all times.

Grade 6: Children who are at least 11 years old may be alone for two consecutive hours if they are monitored.

Grades 7 and 8: Children may provide self-care for up to four consecutive hours.

Grades 9 and 10: Children may provide self-care for up to six consecutive hours.

“Previously, our aerial rescue and firefighting capabilities were limited to a 100-foot reach using a mobile ‘extension ladder,’” said Bahr. “It was very time-consuming to deploy, and a firefighter would have to climb the ladder to assist the occupant down the ladder. With this new truck, we can now quickly raise an enclosed platform from the ground to 100 feet within a few minutes and get the occupants inside the platform for a quick ride back to the ground.”

Since Fort Lee now has larger and taller buildings, Bahr said, fires would need more water to extinguish the flames. The new truck has twice the fire knockdown capability of 2,000 gallons per minute water flow compared to the old truck’s 1,000 gallons per minute water flow.

Another state-of-the-art feature onboard this new truck is an emergency LED lighting system with the ability to control traffic signal lights at intersections, which allows for a safer and quicker response, said Bahr.

An onboard hydraulic electric generator in the truck’s cab will provide scene lighting and vehicle ground illumination before the truck has stopped at the emergency scene.

This $800,000 truck has been at Fort Lee since last July and was purchased by the U.S. Army. Additional equipment to place the truck into service was more than $150,000. During the last six months, firefighters had to receive extensive training on the truck to be able to properly respond to emergencies.

The Fort Lee F&ES is scheduled for replacement of two more vehicles in the near future, pending funding.

Kondi had just been declared a candidate for adoption when Dedrick Jordan and his wife Scottie read an article on the New York Times website about military working dog retirees and adoptions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had decided to add a dog to our family and we thought we would make a good home for an MWD,â&#x20AC;?

Jordan said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We started calling military installations in North Carolina (where the Jordans live) and then we called Fort Lee where they told us Kondi was available for adoption. We drove up the next day to meet her and we fell in love with her and wanted to take her home.â&#x20AC;?

Kondiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new family attended the retirement ceremony and was able to take her home to Chapel Hill, N.C., afterward.

Jordan sent an email on Monday telling how Kondiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first weekend at her new home went. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kondi is at home with us and she is settling in well,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She loves all of the attention and is being spoiled by everybody. She is the talk of our neighborhood.â&#x20AC;?

Like most retirees, Kondiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s years in the military have left her with steadfast patriotism. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were watching the NFL Pro Bowl when the National Anthem began to play. Kondi, who had been playing, stopped and sat â&#x20AC;&#x153;at attention.â&#x20AC;? She sat staring straight ahead until the anthem was complete and then she resumed playing,â&#x20AC;? said Jordan. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At first, we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what she was doing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; then it dawned on us, she was showing respect for her country.â&#x20AC;?

Jordan said adopting Kondi gave his family the privilege of giving back to someone who had served our country.

MRAP 101 Mechanical Training for Storied Combat Vehicles Makes Debut at Installation’s Ordnance School

One of the vehicles responsible for saving hundreds of U.S. lives and changing the face of warfare in Iraq and Afghanistan has made its way to Fort Lee. The MaxxPro, a member of the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected family of vehicles that cut U.S. deaths in half by some estimates, is now the subject of instruction at the Ordnance School based here.

It joins the Humvee, Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck, Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles and others that are part of the instruction in the 12-week Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic advanced individual training course taught at the school.

“These are the Army’s next generation of vehicles” said Sgt. 1st Class Bruce Bezdek, module chief, 91B course. “And it is a critical piece of equipment. There are a lot of moving parts to it, and there’s a lot of sensitive equipment inside. In addition, it can carry a whole squad, so you’re going to have a squad of people depending on the reliability of that vehicle.”

MRAP training at the schoolhouse level began last August at the Ordnance School’s Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic School located in Fort Jackson, S.C. The Fort Lee training began Jan. 26. Prior to its schoolhouse introduction, MRAP training across the Army took place on-site at the unit level, said Elisha Morris, course manager, Basic Wheel Maintenance Division, Wheeled Maintenance Training Department, Ordnance School.

The MaxxPro, which can weigh in excess of 14 tons, can carry three - seven personnel. Its heavily-armored

body features a v-shape design that deflects fragmentation away from the vehicle. It has a track record of surviving many explosions.

Since 2004, U.S. deaths as a result of improvised explosive devices have been reduced by 90 percent, largely due to the MRAPs. The vehicles forced the enemy to change its tactics, said a 2008 story in the Washington Post newspaper.

The Ordnance School currently has seven MRAPs on hand. They are located at Stever Hall where the training includes classroom familiarization and several hands-on sessions.

On Jan. 26, about 40 Soldiers separated into teams of three and took turns removing parts within the steering columns and suspension system. Frederick Butler, a course instructor, was one of several instructors roaming the floor as students went about completing their tasks.

“This training is good for the Soldiers,” he said. “It’s something they haven’t had the opportunity to do before, and we believe these are some of the critical tasks Soldiers will need to know before they arrive at the permanent duty stations.”

Any training would suffice for Pfc. Taylor Bell, a student taking the course. Bell, like many others, heard about the MRAPs through the media but didn’t expect the training would be included while his class was in session.

“I knew the MRAP was a new vehicle they were putting in Iraq and Afghanistan due to the IEDs being the No.1 killer of Soldiers,” he said. “When they told us that we’re going to work on the MaxxPros, I was like

The MRAP has many more fans. They include former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen, who praised it during a visit to an MRAP factory in 2010.

“There isn’t a trip I’ve taken into (Iraq and Afghanistan]) where some young Soldier or Marine won’t say to me, ‘keep those MRAPs coming,’” he said to factory workers. “They save our lives. (MRAPs) saved countless lives, and believe me, there’s not anyone on the ground over there who understands the threat and doesn’t know that’s exactly the case.”

The Ordnance School moved the Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic course to Fort Lee from Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., as a result of the last round of Base Realignment and Closure mandates. The course taught at the Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic School at Fort Jackson. will eventually be integrated with the course here, said Morris.

Team Lee Helps Kids Learn Healthy Eating, Fitness

Four noncommissioned officers from Fort Lee participated in a Jan. 25 fitness program at Matoaca Elementary School in Chesterfield County.

The family-oriented event was part of the National Dairy Council and the NFL’s Fuel Up to Play 60 program that encourages youth to take action to improve their nutrition and physical activity at their schools and for their own health.

Matoaca is just one of several area schools leading the charge for change. The ultimate goal of the program is to initiate sustainable changes at the school, making it possible for children to have more opportunities to be physically active and to eat tastier options of nutrient-rich foods like low-fat and fat-free milk, fruit and whole grains and vegetables. Program organizers said young students are more likely to meet the government recommendations for daily physical activity of 60 minutes and eat the appropriate number of servings from the food groups youngsters need the most.

Instructors from the Joint Culinary Center of Excellence sat up a demonstration area in the cafeteria while instructors from the Petroleum and Water Department created an obstacle course in the gymnasium to challenge kids to be more active.

Sgt. Steve Behr, Marine Gunnery Sgt. Luis Guardao and Air Force Master Sgt. Jamie Green from the Advanced Culinary Skills course prepared low-fat chicken wraps and helped students and their parents learn how to incorporate all the recommended food groups into meals prepared at home.

Green, with her quick smile and kid-friendly attitude convinced the pickier eaters to try the wraps before discounting them. The wraps were prepared with three different flavored tortilla wraps – spinach, tomato or whole grain wheat – chicken marinated with lemon juice and chili powder, fresh spinach and tomatoes.

“Through this partnership, we are promoting positive healthy eating and lifestyle habits and encouraging kids to exercise up to 60 minutes a day,” said Jill Waldrop, assistant principal. “We want them inside and moving and outside and moving. We have Fort Lee Soldiers doing the obstacle course; students are up and moving. We have the chefs here promoting healthy cooking and eating. It is a great start to promoting changes.”

Also during the evening, parents learned how to stretch their dollars at the grocery store.

Former NFL Linebacker Matt Farrior joined the student body for a pep-rally prior to the evening event and was on hand to support the program.

Y

ou don’t have to meet Latorial Faison to know her.

Her life and experiences – the search for selfidentity, the revelation of family secrets, her academic triumphs, motherly aspirations, spirituality, perspectives on AfricanAmerican history and culture, and a number of other topics – have all been offered up for public consumption in the form of poetry, which can be read at www.latorialfaison.com.

A Fort Lee military spouse and educator, Faison offers up her thoughts and feelings with such a naked and unadulterated truth that one might feel a form of intimacy with this native of rural Southhampton County.

“I tell people all the time that writing is risky,” said the 38-year-old mother of three.

“Because you have to say what you feel, be truthful.”

Raised by non-biological grandparents who adopted her at a young age, Faison’s being was formed in the church and is grounded in such values as hard work and family unity. She took up writing in grade school and eventually wound up studying English and religion at the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech, earning degrees from both.

She later went on to teach extensively in various parts of the country. She is currently an instructor at Virginia State University.

On her calling as a poet, Faison said the strength lies in her ability to ignore what people might think of her work.

“I don’t look for the confirmation of others to tell me who I am, or that what I’m doing is worthy,” she said. “If you’re looking for confirmation, then you might not ever tell the story.”

“Confirmation” was certainly not on her mind when she was invited to speak at her high school graduation years ago. Faison was warned to remove references to Christianity from her address but refused to do so.

“They told me two days before graduation, ‘You have to take that out,’” recalled the deeply religious Faison. “Guess what? I left it in. That’s the story of my life – if others set a boundary and I feel like I need to cross it, I’m going to cross it.”

Writer Uses Literary Cadence to Motivate, Enlighten, Educate

aison uses this trademark approach to share, teach and enlighten; especially when she’s penning prose about black history and culture. She has written two books on the subject and many other separate works. Her efforts seems to subscribe to the notion that black history, although full of monumental achievements and celebrated as such during African-American History Month, is also fraught with inhumanity and heartbreak. These unpleasantries are worthy of acknowledgement, she noted.

Faison’s poem titled “Tears for Freedom” is one of many that tackles events and issues in which the word “celebration” isn’t quite the right fit.

Faison acknowledges the fact that such content may make some uncomfortable, but history can’t be changed, she said, or sugarcoated. However, she said she isn’t interested in digging up the past to incite anger, inflict pain or cause guilt but to use it to help all people understand the unique struggles of African-Americans and to support efforts to better race relations.

“For instance, in the workplace and various places in the community,” said Faison, “you might see a black or any person for that matter, and you might not understand what their motives are; why they do what they do.

If you knew something about their history, you will understand that person better.” aison might have been thinking along those lines when she wrote these verses contained in “Celebrate:”

Faison’s poetic range runs the full spectrum of emotion, from rage to pride. She said when she was younger, she wrote to “get things off my chest.” As a result, many of those works are stinging and even startling. Faison said she still has the ability to alarm, but her expressions have evolved into something beyond her emotions. That ability is displayed in “Time to Be Set Free,” a social and historical indictment that black people need “… to let that past die and learn how to move beyond it,” she said.

“I don’t mean that we should forget it, that we don’t honor it, that we don’t teach it, but we don’t sulk in its tragedy so much so that it deters us from prospering individually or collectively:” On this day we must recognize That misconstrued fate has been baptized

Faison said she will continue to use verse to move people beyond the pain of the past, but she concedes that much work has to be done.

“People are still uncomfortable with our history,” she said.“We need to get to a place where we can comfortably and honestly talk about things. And I don’t think we are where we need to be.”

Faison said her future plans are to support her husband in his retirement, complete her Ph.D., “write more books – fiction and nonfiction – and work fulltime at some public institution and become a dean.”

Be Alert to CO Poisoning Dangers as Temperatures Drop

Central Virginia continues to show signs of winter. We have seen a few days where temperatures have plunged into the teens and folks flocked to their thermostats to bring on the heat.

Cooler temperatures can be a source of anxiety to cashstrapped individuals. Given the current state of the economy, a lot of us are looking at alternative ways to save on those heating dollars. Wood stoves and space heaters are often a preferred solution. In our pursuit to stay warm, however, we often overlook some important safety measures associated with heating our homes and work spaces.

Proper installation, mainte-

nance and operation of appliances and stoves are typically the farthest things from our mind as we crank up the heat. Unfortunately, those are the factors that reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide is very dangerous; it’s a colorless, odorless gas that is produced whenever fossil fuels are burned and can cause sudden illness or death. CO is found in combustion fumes, like those produced by vehicles, small gasoline engines, stoves, lanterns, burning charcoal and wood, gas ranges and heating systems. CO can build up in enclosed and partially enclosed spaces; anywhere with an insufficient air flow. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports each year more than 400

Americans die as a result of CO poisoning. It sends another 20,000 to emergency rooms while about 4,000 will be hospitalized.

Red blood cells pick up CO quicker than they pick up oxygen.

CO blocks or displaces oxygen from getting into the body. This can cause tissue damage especially to the heart and brain. The most common symptoms of CO poisoning are the following: +HDGDFKH 'L]]LQHVV :HDNQHVV 1DXVHD 9RPLWLQJ &KHVW SDLQ &RQIXVLRQ PHPRU\ ORVV It is often hard to tell if someone has CO poisoning because the symptoms are so similar to those of other illnesses. People who are

sleeping or intoxicated can die from CO poisoning before they are aware of symptoms. A CO detector can warn you if you have high levels of CO in your home.

Prevent CO poisoning by having a professional check furnace flues, chimneys, vents and heating systems annually. Make sure appliances are installed according to manufacturer’s instructions and local regulations. Follow manufacturer’s directions for safe operation of appliances. Use good common sense and do not use open flames indoors or try to heat your home with a gas range, oven or some other appliance not intended to be used as a heater.

Do not run portable generators indoors or near open windows, doors or vents. Install a batteryoperated CO alarm or a plug-in

Be alert to any unfamiliar or burning odors.

QM Museum Adds Apps The U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum is launching an innovative educational program Feb. 6 using social media and gaming.

The program is designed to increase interaction and awareness of history and the collections here by incorporating them into digital media applications, said Paul Morando, museum curator.

Museum visitors will be able to use mobile phones with data plans to participate in a scavenger hunt. “The new mobile game allows visitors a fun and engaging way to learn about the rich history of the Quartermaster Corps,” Morando said.

Through a grant provided by the Quartermaster Museum Foundation, the museum partnered with the SCVNGR company to develop the mobile game.

By using a personal smartphone or cell phone, visitors will be texted “challenges” (questions on Quartermaster history),

In recognition of their achievements, high scorers can earn online rewards (badges), and the museum may incorporate other recognition opportunities as the program progresses.
