Who or what do you love?

I think the answer to that question determines the choices we make throughout our lives. The affections of the heart guide what we do with our time, money, careers, education, worship, relationships, etc. The list seems endless.

For example, my wife Tina and I have four beautiful daughters, all grown. Three are still in college

When asked who likes to drink soda, soft drinks, or pop (depending on what part of the country you’re from), I’m the first to raise my hand. Consider this, however, the next time you or your child are sipping on that soda: the pH in your mouth drops by about two points and what used to be a neutral environment is now poised to dis-

solve whatever might be in its way, such as teeth.

My patients often ask me how their teeth got in such bad shape, and one of the first things I ask them is ,“Are you a soda drinker?”

These drinks are fine in moderation. However, if they are the only thing you drink and you drink a lot of it, you’re going to have a problem. Soda or soft drinks contain two important elements that can have devastating effects on your

teeth. First, they contain a lot of sugar (12 teaspoons in a 16 ounce cola drink).

It’s even higher for others.

Sugar feeds the plaque that forms on teeth. The bacteria that cause cavities feed off this sugar and convert it into acid. This acid then begins to dissolve away the enamel on your teeth, which will eventually lead to a cavity.

Second, these drinks have large amounts of acids, primarily citric acid and phosphoric acid. These

acids are even higher in diet versions. Citric acid is proven to be the most detrimental to enamel.

Remember chemistry lab when you dissolved a nail in acid? Although it takes a very small concentration over a fairly long period of time to see the problems, it can and does happen every day.

How can we avoid causing these problems?

Cutting out soda altogether is an option but not one many people would consider.

Don’t sip soda over a long period of time. Doing this constantly bathes teeth in acid and subjects them to continuous attack.

Drinking soda during a meal is actually the best option. Use a straw to reduce the amount of time it’s in the mouth. Always brush twice a day to remove the filmy layer from teeth so that the sugar has no place to stick. Use a fluoride rinse once a day (at night preferably). It will help to remineralize enamel that has started to be demineralized during

the day and can actually help make teeth stronger.

Flossing once a day is also very important and extremely helpful in removing that plaque film from in between your teeth.

For people who drink a soda but can’t brush their teeth soon after, I also recommend they chew gum with xylitol as the first ingredient. Xylitol actually helps to fight cavities.

Most importantly, see your dentist at least once if not twice a year for a check-up and professional cleaning.

Leadership of the Kenner Army Health Clinic changed hands during a Friday change of command ceremony at MacLaughlin Fitness Center.

Col. Thomas S. Bundt, a Ph. D. and a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, assumed command from Col. Joseph Pina, who is moving to a medical command position at the Pentagon.

Bundt, a native of Washington State, takes command after serving as the chief of staff at Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s Madigan Army Medical Center. This is his first time serving as a clinic commander.

commander of the Northern Region Medical Command, praised Pina – who assumed command in July 2011 – during the ceremony. Pina oversaw the growth of both Fort Lee’s population and the addition of medical facilities on the installation without any effect on the service or quality of care provided to the community, said West.

“That is a true testament to Pina’s leadership here during the last two years,” West said. “He understands the way to build an outstanding patient experience is through the clinic staff.

I mentioned earlier that he is standing as a successful commander on the backs of the clinic staff members who do the work on a daily basis, and we should all be proud.”

West said that Kenner is the best facility in the region, citing the recent U.S. Army Medical Command Best Military Treatment Facility Contest results where KAHC placed second out of 34 facilities.

Pina thanked his family and the Kenner staff for making his first command a memorable one.

“To say that this command has been rewarding for me would be an understatement,” he said. “I will always remember my service to the great staff of Kenner Army Health Clinic and the people of Fort Lee.” Pina was awarded the Legion of Merit for his exceptionally meritorious performance as commander and his highly effective community outreach and partnerships.

Full-Service DMV up, running on Fort Lee More than 2,000 customers already served RICHMOND – More than 2,000 military personnel, family members and staff at Fort Lee have already taken advantage of the installation’s newest convenience – a Department of Motor Vehicles Customer Service Center.

The new Fort Lee CSC opened its doors on Oct. 22 in the Bloom Building on Battle Drive, next to the Picture Perfect Frame Shop.

The office is approximately 1,300 square feet with four service windows and three testing stations.

This full-service office offers all DMV transactions. You can apply for or renew your Virginia driver’s license or ID card – available for adults, children and veterans; take a road test; get your picture taken; order military-themed license plates; update your address, voter registration and organ donor status; order disabled parking placards and much more.

More than 110 new Virginians have visited the CSC to conduct business including more than 90 customers who applied for Virginia driver’s licenses for the first time. Nearly 200 longtime Virginians have renewed their driver’s licenses or vehicle registrations at the Fort Lee CSC.

Women’s Museum Bring a Lunch Program In celebration of African-American/Black History Month, the U.S. Army Women’s Museum will present, “Have Lunch with the Museum Director,” Feb. 21, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Bring a lunch and learn about upcoming special events and projects planned for 2013.

Dr. Krewasky Salter, historian on African-American military service and consultant for the documentary “For Love of Liberty,” will be among the special guests.

A screening of the documentary will also be shown in the museum’s auditorium.

Night at the QM Museum Returns March 16 After breaking attendance records in 2012, Night at the Quartermaster Museum returns for its fourth year, March 16, 5-9 p.m., at the U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum at Fort Lee. During this popular, free event, students in 1st through 6th grades use objects from the museum’s extensive teaching collection to “piece” together the story of the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps with assistance by historical figures who step out of the museum exhibitions.

Many new characters are part of the event this year. Students will meet President Theodore Roosevelt and observe the issues of the meat-packing industry during the Spanish-American War, as well as General Thomas Jesup – the Father of the Quartermaster Corps.

Participants will see the artifact that was featured on the Travel Channel’s “Mysteries at the Museum,” and learn about a B-24 Bomber that crashed over the Libyan Desert during WWII. Students may chat with women who lived at City Point when President Lincoln visited the Quartermaster Depot and Grant’s headquarters there. They

will learn about the importance of the efficient delivery of supplies to troops after the D-Day invasion directly from the Supreme Allied Commander himself – Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower.

They will hear how the Quartermaster Department was the first federal agency to hire African Americans. Students will also have hands-on learning experiences with the museum’s teaching collection and may create special Quartermasterinspired crafts and play games. Light refreshments will be provided.

New Scholarship Program The University of Maryland University College has joined with the Yellow Ribbon Fund and The Blewitt Foundation to establish the Pillars of Strength Scholarship Fund to support volunteer caregivers of our nation’s injured service members.

In its inaugural year, two full scholarships will be awarded to attend UMUC during the 2013-14 academic year. It is believed to be the only fund of its type that exclusively focuses on honoring volunteer caregivers. The first scholarships will be announced at a special ceremony at UMUC on April 25.

WASHINGTON – Military members and retirees with same-sex partners will qualify for up to 24 new benefits under policy changes Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta announced Monday.

In a memo to the service chiefs outlining the new policy, Panetta noted the department has “essentially completed” repeal of the so-called “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law that barred gay and lesbian military members from serving openly.

Now, the secretary wrote to the chiefs, the work of military leaders must expand to “changing our policies and practices to ensure fairness and equal treat-

ment and to taking care of all of our service members and their families, to the extent allowable under law.”

Two of the new benefits are available at the service member’s election: hospital visitation and Family Readiness Group membership. For 22 other benefits, service members and their samesex partners may file a “declaration of domestic partnership.”

That declaration entitles samesex partners to military identification cards, commissary and exchange shopping privileges, child care and youth programs, sexual assault counseling and other benefits.

As Panetta noted in a statement, those benefits are restricted under the Defense of Marriage Act, commonly known as DOMA, which defines “spouse” as someone married to a person of the opposite sex. The Supreme Court is reviewing the law, and is expected to rule on it later this year.

The secretary wrote, “In the event that the Defense of Marriage Act is no longer applicable to the Department of Defense, it will be the policy of the department to construe the words ‘spouse’ and ‘marriage’ without regard to sexual orientation, and married couples, irrespective of sexual orientation, and their dependents, will be granted full military benefits.”

A senior Pentagon official emphasized in a briefing to Pentagon reporters today that benefit changes will happen as soon as possible. Panetta’s guidance to the services directed they make “every effort” to have systems in place to accept same-sex benefit requests by Aug. 31. In no case, he wrote, may the services delay beyond Oct. 1 in rolling out the benefits.

Rolling out a new benefit takes time, the official said, as regulations and instructions, systems and software all have to be updated, and workers will need to be trained in new processes.

“Normally, we’re looking at a year” to make such changes, the official noted. “This is a very ambitious schedule; we’re really pressing hard to do this.”

Another official said the Defense Department is working to see if the housing benefit can be added to the list and is developing a mechanism to allow burial of same-sex partners at Arlington National Cemetery.

The domestic partnership declaration isn’t feasible in cases where one or both partners have died, the second official added.

Retirees and their same-sex partners will be able to file the declaration once the new systems are in place. The first official estimated that 5,600 same-sex couples include an active-duty service member, 3,400 include a Reserve or National Guard member, and 8,000 include a retired military member.

The cost of implementing the new benefits, the official added, would be negligible.

February is Heart Health Month and Health Net Federal Services wants to help all military members, their families and civilians maintain a healthy heart.

Did you know heart disease claims approximately 600,000 lives each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention? That’s one in four deaths in the United States, the most common killer of both men and women.

Saving lives involves fighting misconceptions.

Here are some common myths about heart disease.

1. All those who suffer from heart disease have obvious symptoms. A per-

son can be thin and in good shape yet still have high cholesterol. High blood pressure is generally silent.

By the time you experience symptoms from high cholesterol or high blood pressure, it may be difficult to reverse the damage already done to the heart.

2. Younger women aren’t at risk. Not all women who have heart disease are elderly. Risk factors like obesity, hypertension (high blood pressure) and Type II Diabetes are showing up earlier now in women.

3. Exercise is too risky for those who have heart disease. Exercise reduces the progression of heart disease and makes those who

have it less likely to have a first or recurrent heart attack.

4. Those who suffer from heart disease can’t undo the damage. Research shows you may be able to undo the damage by including lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet and regular exercise.

5. Every heart attack victim experiences chest pain. About one out of every three people who have a heart attack doesn’t feel chest pain.

6. Men are the vast majority of heart attack victims. Women are especially vulnerable. Women also experience subtle, less-traditional heart attack symp-

The more time that passes without treatment to restore blood flow, the greater the damage to the heart. Better known as “Gaslight,” the title under which this 1938 stage play was filmed, this psychological melodrama seems like a natural step in the progression from an Arthur Conan Doyle detective story to the classic Hitchcockian suspense thrillers. Is Bella Manningham going crazy like her mother had before her or could there be another explanation for her world unraveling around her?

Non-battle diseases, also known as the silent enemy, can ultimately contribute to the debilitating illnesses or deaths or many service members.

Fortunately, the Defense Medical Surveillance System, a continuously expanding relational database that documents military and medical experiences of service members throughout their careers, paints a vivid picture of the silent enemy and any damage it can cause.

Although not always seen, the silent enemy is always there.

That enemy – better known as

environmental exposures – consists of issues related to hot and cold weather injuries, water supply, food service sanitation, waste disposal, arthropods, rodents, noise hazards, toxic industrial materials and most importantly personal hygiene. All pose a threat to force readiness.

Field sanitation was first used during World War II when malaria and other arthropodborne diseases went beyond the capabilities of engineer and medical units. Commanders were required and began to appoint malaria control details which later expanded to include field water supply, waste disposal and food service sani-

tation among other environmental exposures. Those control details were later named the field sanitation team.

Commanders are ultimately responsible for ensuring the health of troops, and they do so by including a FST as part of an effective command environment.

A FST must consist of at least two personnel and one must be a noncommissioned officer. It is important for commanders to ensure their unit’s FST has enough members to accomplish its mission. One way of doing so is to ensure that those on the team are trained and certified.

They must have more than six months remaining with the unit to enroll in the Field Sanitation Team Training.

Field Sanitation Team Training is a weeklong, 40hour block of instruction offered by the Environmental Health Department located

on the second floor of Kenner Army Health Clinic. The Field Sanitation Team Training is offered once per quarter and teaches attendees how to become the eyes and ears of the commander to increase readiness and survivability during future deployments.

Only 50 seats are available for each class, and enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The next Field Sanitation Training is set for Feb. 25-March 1, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., in building 4200, Room 104.

Prospective attendees must turn in a completed DA 4187 Personnel Action form signed by the commander and will be notified of selection to attend the course.

It’s important to know your blood pressure and how those numbers reflect the health of your cardiovascular system. An understanding of what the numbers mean and what their impact is on your body’s tissues should motivate you to develop an actionable plan to optimize your blood pressure.

When you see your health care provider, you hear blood pressure as two

numbers, one over another.

The first number refers to systolic blood pressure, or the pressure it takes the heart to pump blood out to the body. The second number refers to diastolic blood pressure, which is measured when the heart is at rest and beginning to fill with blood.

When pressures are higher than they should be, the cells lining the walls of arteries become damaged, leading to stiffening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis) as well as allowing fatty sub-

stances (LDL- and VLDL cholesterol and triglycerides) to better penetrate the arterial wall to form plaques (atherosclerosis).

Plaques can build in size and reduce blood flow to an extent that damage to tissue occurs beyond the blockage. Areas of the arterial system where plaque has developed are also more susceptible to breaking open and allowing bits of the plaque to flow in the bloodstream and close up the artery where it becomes too small for the particle of

plaque to pass. Either of these scenarios can cause heart attack or stroke.

Long-term uncontrolled high blood pressure can also result in decreased pumping ability of the heart, damage to the kidneys, eyes and extremities, and other diseases.

Salt, also referred to as sodium, affects blood pressure by causing the body to retain fluid due to the electrical attraction between sodium and water molecules. Too much salt in the diet leads to extra fluid retained in the tissue, which creates increased resistance for the heart to pump against with resulting increased blood pressure.

Lowering salt intake is an important way to improve your diet for heart health.

Sodium is measured in milligrams (mg), and this is how the Nutrition Facts label tells us how salty a food is. Current recommendations are for daily intake of no more that 2300 mg of sodium for a healthy individual, but drops to 1500 mg daily for persons with, or who are at risk for, high blood pressure.

Processed foods are notorious for their sodium content, so it is very important to be aware of these products as you shop for groceries. Cured and packaged meats (ham, corned beef, bacon, sausages, cold cuts), fast foods, heatand-serve choices from the freezer case, canned and jarred foods and condiments, side dish mixes

The young Soldier, who has never been deployed, realizes the Reconfigurable Vehicle Tactical Trainer – a virtual environment convoy simulation – can never be a replacement for the real thing, but a recent practice session convinced him that it is more than adequate as the next best thing.

“I really like the training,” he said after participating in an exercise with four other Soldiers at the facility located in building 6235.

“It familiarizes you with your sectors of fire, situational awareness and communication. I learned a lot today.”

Black, his four vehicle battle buddies and more than 70 others from the 54th Quartermaster Company took turns training in the RVTT Feb. 7. The unit, an element of the 530th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 82nd Sustainment Brigade, conducted sessions as a part of its Sergeant’s Time weekly training program.

“The intent was to allow the junior Soldiers to take the leadership positions and assess how they performed under that responsibility,” said 1st Lt. Nicholas Stern, a unit platoon leader. “It was a success in a lot of areas, and it was useful because it allowed them to see what we can improve on.”

and tactical radios.

Through a wraparound video screen, users can cover the mountainous terrain like that found in Afghanistan or the urban landscapes of Iraq and get exposed

to dangers and threats common to each such as harassing locals, improvised explosive devices and small arms fire.

of a six-vehicle convoy scenario that required it to travel a few miles to pick up another vehicle.

They were ambushed along the way.

“It started out with an IED first,” said Webb, describing the chain of events. “The IED went off in front of us that bottle necked us in, then we were attacked with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.”

Lulled to a state of restlessness and anticipation due to a painstakingly slow, 15-minute drive to the destination, the Soldiers were quickly awakened to the moments at hand, engaging the enemy with its M-16s and crewserved weapon. Black said although it was a simulation, it warranted a concentrated and thoughtful effort.

“Even though it may seem fun,” said Black after the event, “all the things I used like sectors of fire, communication, etc., required a level of seriousness because you don’t know if that will be you downrange one day. You have to be serious because it puts things in perspective.”

After returning fire for roughly five minutes and doing the best they could to avoid non-combatants, the vehicle was disabled by enemy fire. Spc. Misty Hopp, Black’s fellow backseat firer and a two-deployment veteran, said the RVTT is an invaluable training device.

“It’s very good practice,” she said. “To understand the concept to what could happen; it’s actually very realistic.”

The aspect of realism was evident during the training. Beads of sweat poured from Hopp’s brow during the attack, and all of the Soldiers displayed facial expressions reminiscent of an actual training mission. Spc. John Ardary, the vehicle’s turret gunner, said afterward the RVTT requires the same mental and physical efforts as an actual training mission.

“It’s as real as it can get without it happening,” he said.

The penetration and outside shooting of Donald Flowers along with the strong inside play of James Jones helped the Fort Lee Travellers men’s basketball team to a 78-64 win over the Fort Meade Patriots Saturday at MacLaughlin Fitness Center.

Flowers started out slow but finished with 23 points.

James Jones was steady throughout, scoring 22 for the contest.

The win was the third of the season against two losses for the Lee team, which retained the fourth spot in Washington Area Military Athletic Conference standings. The Pats fell to 2-3 in the nineteam league.

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Marvin Michael, the Traveller coach, said after the game he was generally satisfied with the performance, but his team came up short in a number of areas.

Other things that you can do to reduce the sodium in your diet are to: rinse canned foods (like tuna, vegetables or beans) to remove salty liquids; choose oil

and vinegar for your salad or ask for dressing on the side when dining out (you can be in better control of how much dressing you actually eat); choose packaged foods labeled as reduced sodium, low sodium, or no added salt when shopping; and cook with fresh herbs or spices, vinegars or lemon juice for added flavor when at home.

Another important dietary strategy to help with managing blood pressure is the DASH diet. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop

Hypertension and is promoted by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. The focus of the DASH diet is adequate intake of fruits, vegetables, low- or nonfat dairy foods, and whole grains along with meeting the guidelines for intake of sodium and dietary fats.

Following the DASH diet ensures optimal intake of potassium, magnesium and calcium, all of which have specific roles in blood pressure management.

Potassium functions to influence relaxation of blood vessels as

well as facilitating excretion of sodium, which could then have a positive effect on fluid management. Magnesium and calcium also influence the constriction of blood vessels and are thought to help in lowering blood pressure when they are adequate in the diet.

The DASH diet is a nutritionally balanced diet that anyone can follow, and can also help to promote weight loss if the diet is planned to create calorie deficit for an individual.

Losing weight toward a

healthy goal can also help to improve blood pressure by reducing the pressure required for the heart to move blood through the body’s mass.

Leadership, self-discipline and confidence are all traits that parents hope to instill in their teens, which is the reason why extra-curricular high school activities like the Junior Reserve Officersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Training Corps program are popular.

JROTC fosters teamwork and pride through a curriculum that includes uniform inspections, drill competitions, charity projects, leadership opportunities and more. Students in the program arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t being groomed for military service, but the values they learn are quite similar to those embraced by the U.S. Armed Forces.

Some of the local JROTC programs are taking that education one step further by actually visiting military organizations at Fort Lee and allowing the students to see first-hand how service members train and live. The most recent example occurred Friday when a group from Monacan High School in Chesterfield visited the 345th Training Squadron here to see how the Air Force builds future Airmen.

The visitors were greeted by a bevy of eager Air Force personnel from various occupational specialties who wanted to show them what could be accomplished when education, technical skill, communication and teamwork all come together

under a unified mission. Lt. Col. Richard Apple, commander of the 345th TRS, kicked off the tour in the Air Force Highbay facility. After sharing some of his career experiences, he answered questions like, â&#x20AC;&#x153;What wars have you served in?â&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s it like when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re deployed?â&#x20AC;? The students were awestruck as the colonel spoke of 40-foot flames from aircraft engines preparing for takeoff, being on the last plane out of Iraq and things like travelling all over the world.

The next stop on the tour was the Highbay training area, and exclamations of â&#x20AC;&#x153;wowâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want to see thatâ&#x20AC;? could be heard as the students saw the large

Next on the itinerary was an opportunity for the second-year JROTC class to chat with five recent graduates from basic training.

The curious visitors wanted to know what boot camp and technical training was really like and what the young troops liked most about the Air Force thus far.

Each of the Airmen easily fielded the questions they were asked, and added key points like the importance of being part of a joint team and working in concert with all branches of the military.

array of specialty areas one can go into, depending on a particular interest. The military students shared the experiences of learning discipline and the feeling of accomplishment when they graduated and received their Air Force coin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the point when

you have earned the right to be called an Airman,â&#x20AC;? noted Staff Sgt Shermon Phillips, the military training leader, who is responsible for overseeing the studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; transition from basic to technical training.

Lee wrestlers show great spirit at Matoaca High tournament “You don’t have to win a trophy to be a champion … just knowing that you gave it everything you’ve got is a victory in itself.”

Those are the words of Air Force Staff Sgt. Joseph Lathwood, coach of the fledgling Fort Lee Wrestling Team. During championship tournaments over the past couple of weekends at Matoaca High School in Chesterfield, his squad showed great determination as it squared off against other, more-experienced wrestlers from throughout the Richmond area.

“We worked very hard this season, and it came down to these last two events,” he said. “The placing of our team was not amazing, but that didn’t matter as much as the overall character and spirit of our wrestlers.”

Lathwood took his 5-9-year-old participants to the Feb. 3 tournament and a few of them made a respectable showing from a standings point of view. Ben and Brody Holtschulte, both new to the sport, grappled their way to second place in the pee-wee division. “They had some difficulty in the beginning but finished strong,” Lathwood said. “The key was the work ethic they put into practice. One of the

moves they mastered was the double leg take down, finished by a half nelson. That really paid off in the tournament.”

The coach’s son, Joseph Lathwood Jr., placed second in the bantam class. Dad said he has been coaching him for a while but this was his first season he competed in a tournament. “Ending in second was a great accomplishment,” he said with a proud smile.

“We also had a few other wrestlers who joined the team a little later in the season but were determined to win at the tournament and managed to place,” Lathwood continued. “They included Mateo Coats (third place), Andrew Lewis (fourth place), Oryin Dinkins (fourth place) and Daniel Jones (fourth place). All of these young men may not have finished first on the scoreboard, but they definitely earned the respect of the parents and coaching staff.”

On Sunday, it was the senior wrestlers’ turn to show what they had. Walking into the tournament, it soon became clear that they would be going up against several advanced wrestlers with previous championship titles under their collective belts, but any sort of worry

was quickly shook off as they confidently stepped onto the mat.

“I saw a lot of dedication out there … our teens were tough and they were definitely proud to represent the military community,” Lathwood said. “Seth Yates and Darius Fakih were a couple of the stand-outs. They had wrestled tough all year and didn’t really flinch when they sized up the competition. After splitting the victories during the actual match, they walked away with fourth place, which is pretty decent for young wrestlers.”

Noah Mcmurry and Hayden Highfield were also new additions to the Fort Lee team, but that didn’t sway their confidence at the tournament. According to Lathwood, they “wrestled tough and did not back down from a match.” Wesley Wilcox earned similar accolades from the coach who said the young wrestler had a rough year but showed a lot of mental toughness in the heat of competition, which is admirable from a personal character standpoint.

“We also had a wrestler in the beginning of the season named Wallace Canada,” Lathwood said.

ty of natural skill. Unfortunately, being such a small team, I felt we were hindering him from growing and learning in the sport. His family and I decided it would be best to move him to the Prince George wrestling program, and it paid off because he was among the tournament champions. Even though he’s with a different team, he’s still part of Fort Lee and we’re very proud of him.

“Actually, all of my wrestlers have sacrificed a lot of time and energy to develop the skills necessary to compete in this sport,” Lathwood continued. “Anyone who knows these individuals probably realizes their level-determination to always

Personal trainers are available weekdays by appointment at MacLaughlin Fitness Center. Specialized programs are offered for sports, weight loss, resistance training, reconditioning and people 60 or older.

The cost for 60-minute sessions is $35 each for the first nine sessions and $30 each for 10 or more sessions.

Get Fit, Stay Fit | Daily A variety of weekly fitness classes are available through the Family and MWR Sports Office.

The cost is usually $4 per class, and a fitness card may be used for most. The 10-class punch card costs $20.

Some classes are free.

Classes for which there is a fee include Boot Camp, Tai Chi, aerobics, Zumba and Step Kick.

Free classes include Workout with Weights in the House of Pain and yoga. Iyengar yoga is free for active duty Soldiers and spouses of deployed service members.

Restorative yoga is free for all qualified participants.

Fitness class participants must be age 16 or older and eligible fitness facility patrons. The WWW in the House of Pain class is for those 18 and older.
