Protect Your Kids from Identity Thieves

You’re probably weary of being reminded to take precautions against identity theft, but here’s a wrinkle you may not have considered: Identity thieves have broadened their reach by harvesting children’s dormant Social Security numbers and using them to illegally obtain jobs, credit accounts, mortgages or car loans and much worse.

Many victims have no inkling anything is amiss until they later apply for a student loan, bank account, job or apartment and are turned down because of poor credit history. Some families have even been hounded by collection agencies or served with arrest warrants because the debts or criminal activities thieves executed were so extreme.

There’s no completely foolproof way to protect your child’s identity, but here are some precautions you can take: Although it’s tempting to simply not register your kids for SSNs until they turn 18, that’s not practical in today’s world. For one thing, children need one if you want to claim them as dependents on your taxes. They also may need one if you want to obtain medical coverage or government services for them or open bank accounts or buy savings bonds in their name.

Most parents register their children for SSNs at the same time they apply for birth certificates at the hospital.

If you wait until later to apply, you must provide proof of your child’s U.S. citizenship, age and identity, as well as proof of your own identity.

Because each person’s SSN is unique, it’s not uncommon for schools, health care providers, insurance companies and others to require that parents provide one as an identification tool. However, don’t be afraid to ask: • Why do they need an SSN – is there a legal requirement and if so, what is it?

• Will they accept alternative identification?

• What will happen if you don’t disclose it?

• What security precautions do they take with personal information?

• Will they agree not to use the SSN as your child’s personal identification number on correspondence, account statements or ID cards?

Warning signs your child’s personal data might have been compromised include: • Preapproved credit account offers.

• Calls from collection agencies, creditors or government agencies.

• You’re denied opening a bank account in their name because one already exists with the same SSN. • They are denied credit, employment, a driver’s

license or college enrollment for unknown or creditrelated reasons.

There may be legitimate reasons why your child is receiving credit offers. For example, if you opened a college fund or they enrolled in a frequent flyer program.

However, if you strongly suspect an identity theft has been committed, you can: • File a police report and keep a copy as proof of the crime.

• Contact the fraud units at the three major credit bureaus for instructions: Equifax (800-525-6285), Experian (888-397-3742) and TransUnion (800-6807289).

• Notify the Federal Trade Commission (877-4384338). Their Identity Theft site at www.ftc.gov contains information on fraud alerts, credit freezes, working with police and much more.

• Ask Social Security (800-772-1213) whether anyone has reported income using your child’s SSN. Search “Identity Theft” at www.ssa.gov for information.

• Contact the IRS’ Identity Protection Unit (800-9804490).

Bottom line: Use the same precautions with your child’s personal information as you do with your own and make sure you know the warning signs and what to do if it’s compromised.

‘Challenge’ Punctuates First EOD Graduation at Lee

Sgt. 1st Class Ronald Pearson remembers his explosive ordnance disposal advanced individual training at Redstone Arsenal, Ala. and how ill-equipped he felt during the subsequent, more in-depth phase of the course at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. “When I was going through the 89D course, I didn’t get to see any of what was expected of me out at Eglin,” he recalled.

Pearson became an EOD instructor a few years ago, and with fresh memories of his AIT days, began an effort with others to better prepare students to tackle the second phase of EOD training.

The 89D Challenge was the result of their work.

It’s essentially an end-of-course capabilities test designed to give students critical thinking and teamwork skills needed for success in phase two of the course at Eglin.

“It won’t be a kick in the face when they get down there,” said Pearson.

“Challenge,” which began a year ago at Redstone, continues as a part of the 89D course now taught at Fort Lee. The first 89D class here graduated Monday as 15 students earned their phase one certificates.

The 89D course was a part of the now-defunct Ordnance Munitions and Electronics Maintenance School at Redstone but is now a component of Fort Lee’s Ordnance School.

Operations at Redstone were relocated here as a result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure mandate. Roughly 1,500 students are expected to come here annually for the 10-week course that includes one day of live-fire training at Fort A.P. Hill.

Many of the students who successfully complete the course will end up in Iraq and Afghanistan where they will use their skills to combat the presence and proliferation of roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices.

Pearson, speaking at the “Challenge” exercise site Friday, said the two-day event wraps up “everything they’ve learned from day one in the form of EOD incident.”

Day one begins with a record physical training test and proceeds with the EOD incident from start to finish.

Pearson said day one is most critical.

“Anything that can go wrong will go wrong,” he said.

“It’s easy to make a mistake and, in the real world, that mistake can be fatal.”

The second day starts with a ruck march and moves on to a number of teambuilding exercises that emphasize leadership qualities and the sharing of ideas.

“The exercise lets them see that any member of the team can propose solutions or ideas and they can be received, applied and successful versus being passive and failing the

All seven exercises included in “Challenge” require students to think critically, said Pearson, noting EOD technicians have to be “quick on their feet.”

“That’s something we have to do everyday,” said the 30-year-old who has been deployed twice. “We have to be ‘Johnny on the spot’ with the good ideas right then and there.”

Capt. Clifton Vincent, commander, Charlie Company 832nd Ord. Battalion, 59th Ord. Brigade, the unit to which the 89Ds are assigned, said instructor breadth and experience are important in conveying the criticality of their mission.

“These guys are all over it,” he said of the EOD instructors. “You’ve got seasoned, well-experienced bomb techs instructing the course. These guys are coming out of theater

with what’s hot and what’s not.”

Pfc. Paul Martin, a student undergoing the “Challenge” on Friday, said his instructors impressed upon him that solutions to problems in the field probably won’t be found stepby-step in a manual.

“Things are never going to be textbook,” said the Chelmsford, Mass., native. “Things are going to be changed, different and awkward. A large portion of this is going to be improvisation. You have to be able to keep a clear head and think through things, learn not to panic or get down on yourself and freeze up.”

For Pearson, that’s the touchstone for success in the course and in the field.

“As long as they don’t make the same mistakes they’ve made here in phase one, I’m glad to see techs come into the field,” he said. “If they repeat the same mistakes, you just hope they get a second chance. That’s the best you can hope for.”

Fort Lee Celebrates Women Equality

Fort Lee hosted its annual Women’s Equality Day Observance Friday at the Lee Club.

The 49th Quartermaster Group and Col. Rodney Fogg, 49th QM Group commander, organized the event.

Sgt. 1st Class Sherry Williams was the master of ceremony and read the Women’s Equality Day proclamation and the history of how the day was started and the steps women have taken to gain equality.

Staff Sgt. Moniqua Murphy performed a skit about Sojourner Truth, and a “Who am I?” game was played where audience members won prizes for guessing famous women who broke through barriers for equality.

The guest speaker was Nancy Miller, who is head of a law firm in Maryland and also the full-time assistant attorney general for the state.

Miller thanked Fort Lee for attending and commented on the military members here.

“What a wonderful community you have here at Fort Lee,” she said. “You guys (the military) are my hero.”

Calling herself a radical feminist dur-

ing the ’70s, Miller said she’s supported women’s rights her entire life.

“I was part of the original group of the National Group of Women in the 1970s,” she said. “I’m a firm believer in women’s right – but I hate everything about (the premise of this national observance) because equality does not start with the word ‘women.’

“It should say Equality Day because if we are segregating the equality, it’s not equality,” said Miller. “Equality is for everyone. If it’s not right for everyone, it’s discrimination. It’s not equality.”

The fight for women’s equality has involved men and women, said Miller. Faces of men who helped the cause should be right alongside the women who have made efforts, she continued. Changing the thinking of women’s equality is the first step in true equality.

“It should be the same for everyone – it should be gender neutral, when we stop thinking of things that should be separate for boys and girls,” Miller said.

Miller said she thinks she will see the change in her lifetime because of how far equality has come.

“When we get equality, it’s going to be for everybody and soon,” she said

Health and Fitness Expo Annual FMWR Event Features Games, Displays, Prizes

Get ready to get strong and in shape at the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation two-day health and fitness expo set for 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Sept. 9-10 at the Fort Lee Post Field House.

“We want to encourage community members, both on and off the installation, to improve their personal well-being by becoming more informed about their health and incorporating a daily fitness routine in their schedule,” said Diana Martinez, one of the event organizers. “We want community members to continue to make a commitment to health.”

To help community members set and reach fitness and health goals, local business will be on-site to distribute free products and services. Day one of the expo features a martial arts class, workout with weights, a health seminar and more than 20 local exhibitors. Day two features family Zumba and family yoga classes, Kid Zones and the exhibitors. Vendors will be on-site offering free services. Active participants in the

health seminar and Kid Zones will have an increased opportunity to win cool fitness-influenced prizes. A mountain bike, Xbox 360 Kinect and a GPS fitness watch are among the prizes to be given away during the event.

A Kids’ one mile fun run and walk is set for 9-9:45 a.m. on Sept. 10 at the field adjacent to the Post Field House parking lot. Registration forms are available at MacLaughlin and Clark Fitness Centers and on the web at www.leemwr.com. The run/walk is open to children aged 6-17 years. All race participants will receive a Fort Lee Kids’ Health and Fitness Expo medal. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The expo is free and open to the public. To access Fort Lee, those without DoD decals must show a government issued identification card, current vehicle registration and proof of insurance.

AAFES: Military Clothing Fits All DALLAS – Got long legs? Or a barrel chest? Or big guns for arms? Having trouble finding an off-the-shelf uniform to fit your body type? Military Clothing Sales Stores, which have now been rebranded as simply Military Clothing, says, “No problem!� Through an agreement with the Defense Logistics Agency, MC can special order any uniform to a troop’s exact measurements. “The way the ‘Special Measurements’ program works is a lot like visiting a tailor shop,� explained Tech. Sgt. Larry McCoy, the Air Force Program Manager for Military Clothing at the Army and Air Force Exchange Service HQ. “An associate at the MC will take a series of measurements, depending on the item you are ordering, be it a jacket or pants or boots,� McCoy said.

The measurements are then sent off to DLA for production. Typical lead times are six to eight weeks. When the item is

complete, it will be available for pick up at the store where you ordered it. Prices are the same for both Special Measurement and off-the-shelf uniforms.

McCoy uses the Special Measurements program himself and encourages other Airmen and Soldiers to do the same. “Because I am muscular, I have broad shoulders, big arms and chest. The standard size uniforms feels constricting when I try them on, so I usually have to custom-order a uniform that fits me just right. Along with being a coordinator of the program, I am also a very satisfied customer.�

Another key point to remember is that all items sold at the MC meet the service standards for things such as infrared or other specifications. You might not get that guarantee if you buy something off post,� said McCoy. – AAFES

Recovery efforts in response to Hurricane Ireneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s destruction along the U.S. East Coast remain the biggest national news story almost a week after it made landfall.

More than 40 people are dead and nearly 5 million people are still without power. Fort Lee and its surrounding communities did not go unscathed.

Four deaths in Virginia, to include one in South Chesterfield County and another in Newport News, have been attributed to Hurricane Irene. Property owners are tallying the damage and some will spend the next several weeks and copious amounts of money cleaning up debris, others have no home to go back to. Many others living off-post are experiencing extreme inconveniences â&#x20AC;&#x201C; without power, hot water and refrigeration.

In the wake of this destruction â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it is people who make the difference; human nature that outshines the natural disaster.

The easiest way to make a big impact is by walking next door and checking in on neighbors. Emergency personnel should be contacted for life-saving and other medical issues. Most homeowners, however, are experiencing property damage concerns. It may take time and muscle, but helping neighbors cut down and remove fallen trees and clear other debris is the quickest way to restore mornnormalcy to the neighborhood. Remember to drink lots of water when working outdoors and be safe when operating lawn equipment and heavy machinery.

Here are a few suggestions: • Look for items that stand out as extravagances you can trim or eliminate, at least temporarily.

• Always pay at least minimum loan and credit card balances to avoid late charges.

• List accounts by interest rate and pay off those with the highest rates first.

• Create separate savings accounts for different long-term goals and have contributions automatically deducted from your paycheck or checking account – even if it’s only a small amount each month. Don’t borrow from one to pay expenses in another, especially your retirement accounts – the tax implications alone are daunting.

Last year, parents of middle and high school students could pay some fees online, but the 2011-12 year brings an expansion of online transactions for Chesterfield County Public Schools. Parents with children in elementary, middle or high school can pay most fees and charges for all their children in one place at any time of day.

Iraqi Soldiers Keep U.S. Vehicles Rolling

BAGHDAD, Iraq – The whir and pounding of impact drills and socket wrenches are familiar sounds in a vehicle repair shop. The sound of a mechanic’s mumbling as he tries to loosen a nut on a transfer case is also common.

The smell of oil and de-greaser fill the air of many repairshops throughout the U.S. military.

The fact that these sights, sounds and smells can be heard from outside a huge wheeled-vehicle repair depot in Iraq may surprise some. The fact that the mechanics responsible for the accompanying sounds of repairs in this shop are Iraqi soldiers should no longer be a surprise.

Since January, the Iraqi army has been fully responsible, with only technical advice and assistance of American advisors, for the maintenance of their Humvees at the Joint Base Workshop Wheel Depot, Camp Taji, Iraq.

From Jan. 1 to Aug. 25, a group of 80 Iraqi army soldiers have completely overhauled 50 M1114 Humvees, 51 Humvee engines, 63 Humvee transmissions, transfer cases and geared hubs.

Of those 80 soldiers, 30 work on disassembly, 30 on reassembly and the remaining 20 work in supporting facilities such as the transmission, engine, paint, blast and

hydraulic shops.

“This is a major accomplishment considering that two months ago the IA had no plan of how to request for assets to support the depot for continuous production sustainment,” said Donald Evans, a JBW wheel maintenance adviser.

From the senior leadership all the way down to the lowest ranking wrench turner, everyone knows exactly what

their job is and how to do it proficiently.

“First we do a disassembly of the humvee,” said Iraqi Sgt. Maj. Samar, the senior enlisted main-wheel supervisor. “We also do a complete electrical check before we put the body and chassis together. After reassembly of the humvee we put on the armor, and finally we do a quality and assurance check on every vehicle off the line.”

Quality work and craftsmanship is something everyone takes pride in at the JBW Wheel Depot.

“I check the work of my soldiers and do final quality checks to ensure there is nothing wrong with the humvee,” said Iraqi Sgt. Qussay, a humvee assembly team leader.

“If I don’t check on my soldiers’ work and then something happens to the Humvee, I would blame myself,” he said.

Besides every team member taking pride in their work, they also have been producing quality work at a faster pace than they ever have.

“The soldiers of the wheel depot are currently ahead of schedule in their production goals by more than one vehicle a month,” said Evans. “The Iraqis working at their current state is very impressive. They have exceeded the standards and will be a great attribute to the future of the Iraqi army maintenance program.”

The Iraqi soldier-mechanics of the JBW Wheel Depot are currently overhauling 6.3 Humvees a month.

Blows Through Post When Hurricane Irene approached the East Coast, dire projections for flooding, power outages and other damages were made for much of the eastern coastline from the Carolinas to Maine.

Last week, Fort Lee began preparations for potential evacuations – bringing in cots, and other supplies – and it became a safe haven for Coast Guard boats out of Portsmouth and military working dogs from Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

While warnings were sent out about the potential for electricity outages, many dismissed them as unlikely.

However, more than 10 hours of the onslaught from the hurricane proved too much for many of the trees and electric poles across the installation. Most of the installation lost power Saturday and crews began working around the clock to clean the debris from roads to allow travel for emergency vehicles.

The Emergency Family Assistance Centers went operational Sunday at the multiple chapels on post. For Fort Lee families without power, it gave them a location to charge cell phones, use microwaves and just relax in an air-conditioned room. The FAC was staffed

by Army Community Service.

Other organizations stepped up to provide assistance as well. The Fort Lee Religious Services granted more than $4,000 to families for food purchases. The Commissary opened Monday when they are typically closed to help families who lost food during the storm.

Many families turned to social media, especially Facebook, to be kept updated on available support services and the timeline for power restoration.

By Wednesday morning, all of housing and most of the offices had power restored.

By the end of Wednesday, the rest of the post – except for the ammunition supply point and North Range – was scheduled to be back online. (As of press time, it is unknown if power was restored to the remaining locations.)

Off-post, many Fort Lee families – military, civilians and contractors – will have power outages until Friday or Saturday.

Downed trees and power lines still exist because of Hurricane Irene. Temple Avenue, between the Ordnance Campus gate and Highway 36, was still impassible, as of press time Wednesday. Fort Lee Police have been posted and are directing traffic there.

While the storm has cleared, clean-up efforts will continue across the Tri-Cities and surrounding communities. For information on how to reach out and help, see Page 9.

Children’s Museum of Richmond A Place for Kids of All Ages to See, Do, Learn

Paleontology, dairy-farming, construction, broadcast journalism, emergency medicine, grocers, bakers and bankers are just a few of the career fields children can explore through play at the Children’s Museum of Richmond, Central.

More than 10 exhibits await children of all ages at CMOR, a not-for-profit organization where innovative learning experiences have helped grow creative problem-solvers since 1981.

Located at 2626 West Broad St. in Richmond, the museum is open Memorial Day to Labor Day every day, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Labor Day to Memorial Day, TuesdaySunday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is open on major school holidays but is closed New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Admission price for everyone aged 1 to 60 is $8. Children under age 1 are free and seniors receive a $1 discount. After 4 p.m., admission is only $4 per person. In honor of the museum’s 30th anniversary ticket prices on Sept. 30 and Oct. 30 will be .30 cents for each child accompanied by an adult paying the full admission. In the wake of the earthquake that disrupted a lot of the East Coast and then Hurricane Irene, you should be asking yourself, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Was I prepared?â&#x20AC;?

You need to be ready when a disaster happens. The first step is to Get a Kit together that includes the items you may need to sustain your family for three days.

Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours, or it might take days.

Basic services such as electricity, water, gas, sewage treatment and telephones may be down for dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s maybe weeks. Some items that will be needed are water, nonperishable food, first-aid kit, flashlight with extra batteries, and a battery-powered or hand crank radio.

Next, you will need to Make a Plan. Make and practice a family emergency plan.

Consider the range of potential emergencies and all the places you

and your family might be. Some emergencies require different responses than others, but a family communications procedure will be helpful in any case. Knowing how to keep in touch and find one another will help your family stay safe and cope with the confusion and fear that come when emergencies strike.

Be Informed is the most important of the three tenants. Learn about the emergency plans for your housing area, place of work, the installation, and the surrounding community. Before, during and after a disaster, it is critical that you maintain contact and accountability with your chain of command and listen for the most up-todate information from local emergency officials (e.g., Installation Operation Center, Fire and Emergency Services, and Provost Marshal Office). Your chain of command and local emergency management officials will provide critical instructions, such as when to evacuate or shelter-in-place and where to find assistance.

The Mass Warning and Notification System, or â&#x20AC;&#x153;Big Voice,â&#x20AC;? can be heard throughout Fort Lee and in the newer buildings such as Mifflin Hall (SCoE). Suicide Prevention Month Renews Focus September is Suicide Prevention Month. World Suicide Prevention Day is Sept. 10.

On this date it is hoped that all sectors of our military and civilian community, to include those bereaved by suicide, will focus public attention on the unacceptable cost and burden of suicidal behaviors within diverse groups.

Activities should focus on the promotion of understanding suicide and highlighting effective prevention.

The Virginia Department of Health is very active in developing programs to address suicide. This past summer there were a number of Suicide Summits that took place across the various regions of the state. These summits allowed for both public and private partners to come together, collaborate and develop community needs assessments and action plans. Below are some statistics that were provided at the summit: • White males (61 percent), white females (19 percent) and African-American males (15 percent rate) are the largest represented groups among all suicide victims.

• Chesterfield County averages 30 suicides a year.

• Whites are still at highest risk, but there has been a

significant upward shift in the risk level rate among the African-American population (6.3 to 69.6) • Risk increases have been found for all age groups except for those older than 85 (In general, non-fatal attempts decrease with age) • Methods of fatal injury include firearms, poison and hanging/suffocation, which account for 94 percent of suicides.

• The most common method for non-fatal attempts is poison (78 percent).

• Most poisons are prescribed medications, primarily pain and mental health medications.

• Veterans accounted for 22 percent of all suicide victims older than 18 (21 percent male; 1 percent female) • The most common circumstances are mental health problems (57 percent), crisis within the past two weeks (39 percent), relationship issues (36 percent), problems with alcohol and/or other substances (25 percent) and physical health problems (21 percent) Fort Lee was represented at the summit in Chesterfield

New Capabilities Enhance Guard Response

ARLINGTON â&#x20AC;&#x201C; About 7,675 National Guard troops from 18 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico responded over the weekend to civil authorities tackling Hurricane Irene and its aftermath.

Three capabilities enhanced the National Guardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contribution: the new National Guard Coordination Center, dual-status commanders and the deployment of strategically placed force packages ahead of the storm.

The National Guard Bureauâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new 24-hour, 365-day coordination center in Arlington, boosted coordination and communication between the Army and Air National Guard and local, state and federal partners, Guard officials said.

The appointment of dual-status commanders to lead state National Guard and federal forces sped up response, and the deployment of strategically-placed force packages increased readiness, officials said.

The NGCC, dual-status commanders and pre-placed force packages are relatively new capabilities born from lessons learned from past natural and man-made disasters. What individual Guard members were doing on the ground and in the air contributing to the whole-of-government response came from the almost 375-year-old tradition born when New England farmers set down their plows and picked up their muskets before independence.

According to NGCC reports: Guard members cleared debris and performed high-water search and rescue missions in Connecticut. They helped transportation officials control traffic in the District of Columbia.

They handed out cots and supplies in Delaware. They flew helicopters from Alaska, Florida, Mississippi, New Mexico and Ohio to standby in the affected region for search and rescue, damage assessment, transportation or other missions.

Citizen-Soldiers and Airmen provided command and control support in Maine; filled sandbags and assessed damage in Massachusetts; performed search and rescue and provided security and transportation in North Carolina; and provided shelter in New Jersey.

The National Guard provided maritime transportation to the islands of Vieques and Culebra in Puerto Rico; they supported communications in Rhode Island; they provided engineers to local authorities in Virginia.

About 101,000 Guard members were available in the affected region, the Department of Defense reported, and the NGCC worked with the states and other federal agencies to ensure the right numbers reached the right places at the right time. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As Irene approached the United States, our NGCC was coordinating with the states, territories and the District of Columbia; the Federal Emergency Management Agency and U.S. Northern Command to ensure the most effective National Guard support to civil authorities and enable us to

bring the full benefit of our size, skills, training, experience, command and communications infrastructure and legal flexibility to the whole-of-government response to the storm,â&#x20AC;? said Air Force Gen. Craig McKinley, the chief of the National Guard Bureau. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hurricane Irene demonstrated the vital importance of our new National Guard Coordination Center, which enables us to work seamlessly with our state and federal partners at the first warning of potential disaster.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;This storm also demonstrated how dual-status combatant commanders who can direct both state National Guard and federal forces in response to domestic incidents increases collaboration, communication and coordination between federal and state assets, improves leadership, avoids duplication of effort and enhances the team response,â&#x20AC;? McKinley said.

In March 2011, the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security and the bipartisan 10member Council of Governors adopted the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Joint Action Plan for Unity of Effort,â&#x20AC;? strengthening support to governors when they request military assistance for disaster response. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Monitoring our response to Irene, I have been deeply proud of the sacrifices of our citizen-Soldiers and Airmen, more than 7,000 of whom once again set aside their civilian lives and took on their military roles at a momentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s notice to help their neighbors and communities, with tens of thousands more at the ready if needed,â&#x20AC;? McKinley said.

Installation Management Academy Welcomes Students to Fort Sam Houston

FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas – The Installation Management Academy, featuring the Maj. Gen. Robert M. Joyce Family and MWR School and the Installation Management School, is open for business in San Antonio.

As part of Base Realignment and Closure, the Army academy relocated this summer from Fairfax County, to historic Fort Sam Houston, an Army stronghold since 1876.

“We started designing this (building) years ago and have worked with it all the way through the design process, and we’re very pleased with the outcome,” said Dr. Patricia Tucker, who arrived July 5 as director of the FMWR School. Col. Matthew Margotta is commandant of the Installation Management School.

Courses began Aug. 1 at the new facility. Four classes already have graduated, and the academy should be fully operational by Oct. 1. Most of the courses last only one or two weeks.

About 70 percent of the staff relocated from Northern Virginia to San Antonio to help keep the academy’s everevolving curriculum current with the needs of today’s evolutionary Army.

“Our staff just got here from Virginia a few days ago,” Tucker said.

The state-of-the-art facility is one of the newest on Fort Sam Houston, which has attracted multiple requests from the community.

“Everybody wants it for their change of command (ceremony), for their pot-luck lunch, for their wives’ club

meeting, for their town hall, so people are certainly aware of the facility,” Tucker said.

The academy, however, is a place for higher learning among Army FMWR employees and aspiring garrison commanders.

Her next desire is for everyone on Fort Sam Houston and around the Army to take advantage of the academy’s opportunities.

The academy offers more than 100 courses through online and instructor-led classroom formats. Forty courses have received college credit recommendations from the American Council on Education.

“We’ve made inroads with the garrison commanders and we’ve done a lot of marketing,” said Tucker, who noted that more people have become aware of the academy during the past two years.

Patti Scalf, an assistant director at the North Post Child Development Center at Fort Belvoir, currently is enrolled in the Family and MWR Program Management Course at the academy. An Army spouse for 23 years, Scalf served two years as the Child Development Center director at Fort Drum, N.Y. A teacher by trade with grown children ages 22 and 17, Scalf has experienced many aspects of Army Family life, including how to handle the deployments of her husband, who has served on active duty and with the Army National Guard. While at Fort Drum, she began working with Child Youth and School Services and became passionate about the programs.

Scalf expects to expand her knowledge of the programs at the academy.

“I hope to get a lot more of the business end of it, and

the ability to actually run it as a business,” she said. “My background is education, so as far as programming goes, I’m very comfortable with that part of my position as assistant director. But as far as the business end of being able to run it and be sure that we follow the budget, I’m getting a lot of good information on how to do that and set up and action plan and those kinds of things.”

After only four days of class, Scalf already was impressed with the academy.

“This is very nice,” she said. “I like the color schemes with all of the Southwestern colors, and all of the equipment and technology is very up-to-date. We all had computers issued to us when we arrived.

“The training has been excellent so far. I go back every evening and think, ‘OK, I can use this in this part of my job.’ It’s very applicable, very useful. The instructors have been very informative. They obviously know the material they are teaching and they have brought in some guest speakers who are very good at presenting their information.”

Scalf suggested the course would be good for all FMWR employees, particularly those in the Management Training Program.

“I’ve done some partnerships with different programs, but really as far as the scope of Army FMWR, I did not have an idea,” she said, “and I’ve been with FMWR now for almost four years.

“This course has provided a very good, broad perspective of what FMWR does and how it relates to the whole mission of the Army. It’s given us some tools that we can use when we’re planning our activities and programs.”

Students from the Quartermaster Basic Officer Leadership Course class 11-009 performed an act of kindness and selfless service by giving back to the community Aug. 20.

These lieutenants along with their TAC officer joined in the efforts of rebuilding houses with the local Tri-Cities Habitat for Humanity in Petersburg.

Habitat for Humanity is an international, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating poverty housing from the world. This nonprofit organization provides houses through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donated materials and money. The houses are sold at no profit to partner families and financed with no-interest mortgages over a fixed period of time.

The class was split into two groups and worked on two separate houses that needed new roofs and flooring.

Everyone was hard at work doing tasks such as cleaning the gutters, removing shingles, patching woodwork and removing door hinges and blinds.

This event provided the class with a great opportunity for building class cohesion and teamwork. Many of volunteers had no prior experience on construction work. Through guidance and hours of hard work, the job was done.

One of the houses that was worked on, belonged to a 50-year-old woman living with one of her 17 grandchildren.

A playhouse was built for her granddaughter who has scoliosis. The home repairs provides an opportunity for this young girl to receive education from the elementary school right across from her home.

Although many of the students could have spent the Saturday morning doing other things, this volunteer project brought the class closer and left members with a sense of accomplishment that they contributed to providing a decent home for deserving people.

Flag Ceremony Heralds Arrival of DCMA

A crisp U.S. flag quickly rose for the first time in front of the new Defense Contract Management Agency headquarters at Fort Lee on Aug. 25.

The dawn was just breaking through the trees as cadre and students from the Noncommissioned Officer Academy’s Quartermaster Branch Senior Leader Course raised the flag at the call of a distant bugle; a new day for the Army installation, and a new day for its newest tenant command.

Air Force Col. Kurt Stonerock, DCMA chief of staff, and Don Collins, DCMA strategic effects program manager, were on hand to represent the agency during the flag raising. Prior to the ceremony, Stonerock thanked the participants and explained DCMA’s relationship to the warfighter.

“The Defense Contract Management Agency is important to what you do every day,” said Stonerock. “Our staff monitors contractor performance to make sure you’re getting equipment that works as advertised when you need it.

“When you deploy, DCMA personnel deploy

too,” Stonerock told the group, many of whom wore combat patches signifying time in Iraq or Afghanistan. “For instance, we ensure contractors providing primary life support services at bases in-theater perform to their contractual obligations.”

The past two months have seen a flurry of activity at the Fort Lee DCMA facility, a renovated building formerly home to the Combined Arms Support Command. Employees began working at the building in July. The final group, including the agency director, Charlie E. Williams Jr., transitioned from the former headquarters in northern Virginia at the end of August. The result is a unified headquarters for an agency with more than 10,800 employees worldwide overseeing more than 330,000 defense contracts.

The move was directed by the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure process and has been welcomed by DCMA leadership as an opportunity to have the headquarters on a military installation, closer to the service members the agency supports. A ceremony will be held at the DCMA headquarters, building 10500, on Sept. 15 to formally open the building and celebrate the successful completion of the BRAC move.

Traumatic Grief Group The dreaded, sudden loss of a friend in a combat zone produces unimaginable suffering. Physical and psychological health problems may be caused by unresolved grief.

The Department of Behavioral Health has organized a support group for active duty military who lost a friend in combat. The group meets Mondays, 10-11:30 a.m., in the third floor Group Room 1, Kenner Army Health Clinic.
