Gate Hours Modified Until Mid-January New installation access gate hours that began this month are getting a short-term adjustment. From Oct. 15 to mid-January, the Lee Avenue gate will be open again on weekends from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. while the Mahone Avenue gate returns to its original daily hours of 5 a.m.

The initial changes that took effect Oct. 1 currently have the Lee Avenue gate closed on weekends and the Mahone Avenue gate open until 1 a.m. daily.

23rd QM Soldiers Share Suicide Stories

With the telling of five tragic stories, military and civilian workers of the 23rd Quartermaster Brigade witnessed one of the more poignant moments of the Sept.

A brigade-sponsored training event in the Petroleum and Water Department auditorium featured three Soldiers – including Lt. Col. Ronald Childress Jr., commander of the 262nd QM Battalion – who shared personal accounts of the untimely, selfinflicted deaths of classmates, battle buddies and close friends. It was an emotional event that clearly met the Army’s goal of conducting innovative training that drives home the points of awareness and intervention to eliminate incidents of suicide in the ranks.

“I remember that day when we were just hanging out, and I knew something was wrong,” said Childress of his high-school friend Becky. “I asked her if she was all right and she just responded, ‘Yeah,’ so I let it go. Of course, I know now that I should have asked more questions or tried to find someone else she could talk to, but I didn’t. A few hours later, I found out she was dead.”

Three months later, the brother of a girl that Childress once dated asked if he wanted to come over and shoot baskets, which was somewhat out of the ordinary considering their casual relationship that he didn’t consider to be close to “friend status.”

“This guy had never called me before,

so I’m thinking, ‘what’s the problem … what’s wrong with this picture?’ That’s as far as it went,” Childress said. “Later that Sunday afternoon, the family went to church and the brother didn’t go. The parents found him dead in the garage when they returned home.”

Both examples, Childress continued, underscore the point that cries for help from individuals with suicidal thoughts may be subtle or may not make any sense at first glance; however, it’s important to listen carefully and act if one suspects even the slightest hint of emotional troubles.

“The Army uses the Ask-Care-Escort model to make it easy to remember,” he said. “In those two instances in high school, how much of a difference would I have made if I had gone beyond the point of simply asking, ‘Are you OK?’ I don’t know, but it’s worth consideration as we discuss this important issue (of suicide awareness and prevention).”

Childress then introduced Sgt. 1st Class Aretha Riley, 262nd QM Bn. S-4, who shared the story of a “wonderful young man” – Spc. Nicholas Steele – she first met at Fort Riley, Kan., in May 2009. He was barely 18 years of age, and Riley quickly became a mentor/mother figure for the young Soldier.

Their unit deployed to Iraq in September 2009, and Steele was selected for one of the personal security detail positions that many Soldiers in country desperately wanted. In February 2010, he suffered a traumatic brain injury when the convoy he was riding in got hit by an improvised explosive device and rocket-propelled grenade, Riley said. “They took him off the

The unit returned to Fort Riley in September 2010 and “everything seemed fine,” according to Riley. Steele was considering reenlistment and appeared to be on track for a very successful military career. “Then he started suffering nightmares around January 2011,” she said.

“When we discussed seeking help from the mental health experts, he didn’t want to do it because he was afraid of being picked on by his co-workers. It took a lot

of discussion, but he finally agreed to go and they were able to help him with medication to get rid of the nightmares so he could sleep.”

After her transfer to Fort Lee, Riley stayed in touch with Steele through Facebook. Those message posts, however, quickly devolved from “life is an amazing thing” to “I can’t live life like this anymore, I’ve got to go.” She made a call to check on her former Soldier and later learned that he tested positive for drugs during a urinalysis.

During the competition, the Soldiers will test their Army aptitude by conquering urban warfare simulations, facing board interviews, tackling physical fitness

tests, taking written exams and performing various warrior tasks and battle drills relevant to today’s operating environment.

Winners will be announced Oct. 22 in Washington, D.C., during the Association of the U.S. Army’s annual meeting. The Soldier and NCO of the Year will receive honors and cash awards in recognition of their achievements. They will represent the Army at special events throughout their 2012-13 reigns.

Trans Corps Holds Devotional Breakfast

The Transportation Corps hosted a Suicide Prevention Stand Down Prayer Breakfast at the Regimental Club Sept. 27 that featured several speakers and musical performances.

Chief Warrant Officer 3 Thomas M. VanWychen and Richard D. Moore performed “America the Beautiful” and “Amazing Grace” while guests enjoyed their morning meal.

Each of the event speakers touched on battle buddies and how to look out for others.

Command Sgt. Maj. Allen B. Offord Jr., Transportation Corps regimental command sergeant major, kicked off the remarks, noting that the early morning run held on the Suicide Prevention Stand Down Day was motivating for all.

“We were running for a purpose,” he said. “That purpose is to not lose one more live (to suicide).The Army’s message for this suicide prevention stand down is to have the courage to help a buddy. Everyone

in this room should have someone designated as their battle buddy – someone to watch out for us.”

Sgt. 1st Class Naomi L. Rankins, a chaplain assistant, began her remarks with a devotional message. She spoke about the importance of battle buddies as well.

“About 13 years ago, I made a commitment to serve my country and my God and to obey the orders of those appointed over me,” said Rankins. “It wasn’t until I met my basic training battle buddy that I knew I had another commitment to make: to be loyal to those with whom I serve. I didn’t chose my battle buddy – my drill sergeant did – but I knew at that moment that I would have her back and she would always have mine.”

Rankins gave some examples of how battle buddies can help save a life by recognizing signs of suicide or helping to prevent sexual misconduct.

Archaeology Facility Plans Two Events

Borrow an archaeologist’s eyes, and you’ll see a different Fort Lee. You’ll find signs of habitation by Native Americans.

Traces of the small farms owned and worked by free African-Americans, both before and after the Civil War, also are scattered throughout the post. Colonial era, Revolutionary War and World War I artifacts crop up from time to time and include a gun barrel dating to the 1700s.

Regional Archaeological Curation Facility staff members explore sites on post to find and study artifacts that will help them understand the big picture of human life on this land. They want to share that with the public so they will host two open houses to celebrate Virginia Archaeology Month and the facility’s 10th anniversary.

The facility, part of the Directorate of Public Works, is a purpose-built structure – complete with climate controls, alarm and fire suppression systems and a back-up power supply – that houses artifacts for the post and nine other agencies. The building was shepherded into existence by Carol Anderson, chief of the Environmental Management Office, during her previous stint as the cultural resources manager. The offices and storage space are housed in a brick structure off Shop Road on 22nd Street behind the Quartermaster and U.S. Army Women’s museums.

The regional facility’s first open house will be Oct. 21, 1-4 p.m., and the second, with an expanded program, will be Oct. 23, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. It will include a speech

demonstrations of experimental archaeology (1:30 p.m.) and ground-penetrating radar (2 p.m.).

Visitors will be able to see some artifacts displayed in the facility’s exhibit room. On view will be two favorites of staff members. Archaeologist Bryce Stanley’s prize is a fluted clay pipe bowl that bears the high stylized face of a Native American or an African. This unusual find was discovered on the Liberty Chapel site. Curator Amanda Vtipil’s favorite came from the Blankenship site on post. It is part of a clay wig curler. Once visitors know what it is, they usually see the resemblance to more modern equipment for creating wavy locks.

In addition to Fort Lee’s 121 boxes of artifacts, the facility houses more than 500,000 artifacts including collections from Langley Air Force Base, Fort Eustis, Fort Monroe, Quantico Marine Corps Base, Fort A.P. Hill, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, the Army Corps of Engineers, Petersburg National Battlefield and Fort McNair in Washington, D.C. There’s still room for additional collections.

Federal law requires archaeological surveys be conducted prior to construction projects.

All of the artifacts found at Fort Lee have a greater importance collectively than any single item that may be found, said Amy B. Wood, cultural resources manager. “It helps us see the big picture,� said Wood. “The amount of time this property has (been) Camp Lee is just a little piece of the whole. We know there was Native American occupation going back at least 10,000 years. We know we have 17th century European occupation, 18th and 19th century, too. We’ve got World War I sites here as well.�

Hatch Act Restricts Campaign Activity The Hatch Act is a federal law that regulates political campaign activity by federal employees as well as state and local government workers who are paid with federal funds.

An important rule to keep in mind is that federal employees cannot promote a particular candidate or political party in their official capacity or while using government property – whether it is a government vehicle, building, computer or telephone.

Ord Battalion Inducts 16 into NCO Corps

Sgt. 1st Class Erick Detrich became a noncommissioned officer years ago and didn’t have to be present for his unit’s NCO induction ceremony.

Yet he felt compelled to join his fellow NCOs in the symbolic and long-standing tradition.

“I was never inducted into the Corps due to all the deployments and the ops tempo we’ve had the past several years,” said the 14-year Soldier, “so being actually inducted into the Corps means a lot.”

The 16th Ordnance Battalion 59th Ord. Brigade welcomed Detrich and 15 other Soldiers into the Corps during a ceremony Friday at Ball Auditorium. Command Sgt. Maj. Cheryl N. Greene, 16th Ord. Bn. command sergeant major, said induction ceremonies are always highlight events but this one in particular was special.

“This one meant a lot because not only did we induct new NCOs, but we got to induct senior sergeants into the corps of the noncommissioned officer,” she said of the first such event held on the three-year-old Ordnance Campus.

“It signifies unity, a sense of belonging and it says that we haven’t forgotten about the traditions of the Corps and

our obligation to acknowledge our noncommissioned officers.”

Like Detrich, many NCOs had not been afforded the opportunity for induction due to the frequency of deployments to wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Detrich was one of three sergeants first class present for the ceremony. Staff sergeants numbered 11. Only two sergeants, seasoned and not newly promoted, walked through the ceremonial threshold.

on hand for the event. Included were Col. Thomas Rivard, commander, 59th Ord. Bde.; Lt. Col. Steven Carozza, commander 16th Ord. Bn.; Sgt. Maj. Anthony Boles, acting regimental CSM, Ord. Corps; retired Command Sgt. Maj. C.C. Jenkins, former Combined Arms Support Command CSM; and retired Command Sgt. Maj. Don E. Wells, former commandant, Quartermaster NCO Academy.

The ceremony featured Soldiers dressed in period uniforms to illustrate the history of the U.S. Army, a brief history of the NCO induction ceremony and recitals of the traditional Soldier Request/NCO Response and Officer Request/NCO Response and NCO Creed.

The guest speaker, Command Sgt. Maj. Edward C. Morris, the 59th’s CSM, emphasized the roles of NCOs in completing missions and shaping the force, using a play on pronouns to refer to the inductees.

Just before Morris’ speech, names of the inductees were announced as they walked one by one through a threshold depicting the NCO ranks and a twoSoldier arch of sabers. Sgt. 1st Class Miguel Guzmanescolastico, another one of the inductees, said it was a memorable occasion. “The ceremony was outstanding,� said the 1 -year Soldier. “Actually, I would consider it as one of the highlights of my career.�

Sgt. Seaford +erron, one of the two sergeants inducted, said it is something to remember, an occasion that says being an NCO is far beyond putting on the stripes and receiving the accompanying pay increase. It goes a long way, he said, in helping Soldiers comprehend the honor bestowed upon them and the responsibility that comes with it. “It’s not just about the rank and pay,â€? he said. “It’s good for you to feel like you’re a part of something. It’s good to know that we’re a team, and there’s something out there that says Âľyes,’ we are a team; here’s the corps, welcome, be a part of it.â€?

While the ceremony itself, with its ritual and symbolism, serves to perpetuate traditions, Greene said it also serves to encourage NCOs to uphold the standards from a practical standpoint. “I e[pect them to ÂľBe, .now and Do,’â€? she said, citing an Army leadership motto. “And I e[pect them to live up to the values, not just of the NCO corps but the seven Army values, on a daily basis and inculcate those values into the NCO creed.â€?

CASCOM Embraces Center’s Mission, Enhances Synergy Through Alignment In an effort to further align core functions, the U.S. Army transferred responsibility of the Defense Ammunition Center, previously aligned under the Army Materiel Command, to the Combined Arms Support Command, a major subordinate organization of the Training and Doctrine Command Sept. 24. CASCOM develops, trains and educates service members and civilians, supports unit training and designs, builds and synchronizes a versatile mix of capabilities, formations and equipment.

The DAC is the Department of Defense’s focal point for ammunition expertise. It was established in 1920 and today, trains more than 110,000 students from all services annually. With 143 full-time employees and an operating budget that exceeds $29 million, the center conducts training at 16 regional sites as well as operates the U.S. Army Technical Center for Explosives Safety.

“The DAC realignment will create great synergy and enhance training for our war fighting logisticians. The DAC provides a wide variety of vital and essential ammunition expertise to the Army and our joint service partners,” said William F. Moore, CASCOM deputy to the commanding general. Its mission of providing ammunition training, explosives safety, transportation engineering and operational inspections “will support and enhance our support to the Army’s sustainment war fighting function,” he added.

TRADOC currently trains about 511,000 service members across the DoD. This training transfer constitutes a 20 percent increase in TRADOC’s support to the Army and joint force.

“The bottom line is that this day is about value,” said Farmen. “Everybody matters. We are only as good as the sum of all of our parts. Everyone counts.

“Everybody has a task and purpose, and when we don’t have someone in our ranks, somebody has to carry that load,” Farmen continued. “Everyone has a real purpose in being a part of the engine that runs the Army. It’s about being a team of team players.”

Farmen shared a story he saw recently on television about Dakota Meyer – a sergeant in the Marine Corps – who earned the Medal of Honor. The story wasn’t about the medal he earned, but about what happened when he came home after the event that earned him the medal.

“When he came home, he struggled with it,” Farmen said. “He went back to the farm with his father, and he had a hard time putting the pieces together.”

Farmen said Meyer took to drinking and carried weapons with him everywhere he went. One night, he was out driving on the farm – after drinking – and he put his gun to his head and heard the click from the gun. ”After the click, he sobered up quickly,” he said.

“Someone – probably his dad – had removed the bullets from the weapon.”

And that’s what battle buddies do, said Farmen.

After the breakfast, the Transportation Corps spent the rest of the day in training sessions to teach about warning signs of suicide and sexual assault/harassment.

Army Launches Campaign to Com mbat Suicides

The serious messages of suicide prevention reverberated loudly and resolutely within the confines of Fort Lee Sept. 27 as community members gathered in every corner of the installation for a day of awareness and training designed to stem a growing and somewhat consistent problem.

Officially called Army Suicide Prevention Stand Down Day, the observance took place at virtually every Army installation in the world with the purpose of offering solutions to a problem Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III called “the toughest enemy I have faced in my 37 years in the Army.� He mandated the event after learning that two Soldiers committed suicide in July and another 36 were under investigation for the same reason.

Maj. Gen. Larry D. Wyche, commanding general, Combined Arms Support Command and Fort Lee, put himself at the forefront of the installation’s suicide prevention campaign from the very beginning. On stand down day, he led roughly 8,000 military and civilian participants on a 6

a.m. installation physical training run that comprised just about every unit at Fort Lee. Unit runs are part of an Army tradition used to boost morale, encourage camaraderie and rally the troops. Wyche used the occasion to do just that, taking advantage of a fire ladder truck and public address system to directly address hundreds gathered at the CASCOM headquarters following the run to personalize the Army messages on suicide prevention and other subjects. “I firmly believe that high standards complimented with consistency are marks of true professionals, and that’s Team Lee,� he said from the ladder bucket elevated about 30 feet off the ground. “We need that same level of dedication and commitment on and off the battlefield.�

Wyche then wasted little time getting to the gist of his message. “We have had several Soldiers as well as Family members who have made suicidal comments as well as attempted suicide,� he said. “Team, we need your help. We need help. We must take care of one another.�

The general went on to address what Team Lee members must do if they should find themselves or someone else in a situation in which they could cause harm to themselves or others.

accordingly and appropriately,” he said, “and we will take all of them very, very seriously.”

Wyche, who has been in command about three months, concluded his speech in the tone of a war fighter, reiterating teamwork and action in solving problems and pressing ahead.

“We will show people we are the best,” he said, “We will speak softly, carry a big stick and let the results show. We will attack, attack, attack and attack suicide prevention and sexual misconduct, and there’s no doubt in my mind that we’ll get in the end zone together.”

The PT event was the first full installation run conducted here since the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure plan brought the Ordnance and Transportation schools to Fort Lee, joining the Quartermaster School and Army Logistics University.

Sgt. 1st Class Barry Brown, a run participant assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, CASCOM, said a PT run is always a good way to connect with the troops.

“It was very motivating,” he said, “and I believe the message was heard.”

Staff Sgt. Michael Flint, also assigned to HHC, CASCOM, said the run was a good example of “leading from the front.”

“I believe the presence of the CG is going to strongly affect not only the noncommissioned officers and officers but also the senior enlisted (Soldiers) who are in the initial entry training units. I believe that message will resonate clear across the board.”

Master Sgt. Joseph Petty agreed. He said the value of presence can never be underestimated.

“Soldiers do what they see their leaders do,” said the HHC, CASCOM Soldier. “If the leader is out here and his primary focus is suicide prevention and sexual misconduct, then the Soldiers are inclined to do the same. I think it was a good idea for him to come out here and do it.”

The PT run had an impact on the Army’s newest Soldiers as well. Pfc. Taylor Whitestar, a track vehicle mechanic student at the Ordnance School, said the general’s message brought to mind the importance of her role as a Soldier and supporter.”

“I think about how much I want to be there to help my battle buddies,” she said. “All of us need that assurance that we’re not in this alone… that we (Soldiers) are always here for each other and can get through anything together because we’re part of a team.”

The PT run event was just the beginning of a full day of installation training and information on suicide prevention and sexual misconduct. Other activities included a mandatory education and awareness session for all U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Lee, military and civilian employees at the Soldier Support Center.

series of classes that focused on suicide prevention, resilience-building and reinforced Soldiers’ training on the Army’s Ask, Care and Escort campaign and the Sexual Harassment and Assault Response and Prevention program. Several prayer breakfasts were also scheduled throughout the week, and the 23rd Quartermaster Brigade organized an insightful panel discussion in the PWD auditorium (see Page 3).

Sgt. 1st Class Raydeen Edwards, executive administrative assistant for the Transportation Corps regimental command sergeant major, said the stand-down and the Army’s ongoing challenges concerning suicide punctuates the fact that more is needed to tackle the problem.

“This is a day that I think the Army needs to have continuously,” she said. “I’ve been on many suicide watches with Soldiers to make sure they were OK and to show them how to deal with hard times in the military. I’ve also known Soldiers who killed themselves while they weren’t on watches because there was no one to take care of them.

“I agree with the Army’s position that more suicide prevention awareness is needed so they can train Soldiers to know and identify potential warning signs of suicide.”

Infections: Precautions Help Prevent Spread

Going to the hospital is an emotional and stressful experience for patients and their families, and there are many risks to you during hospitalization including the possibility of getting an infection.

International Infection Prevention Week is Oct. 10-20 at Kenner Army Health Clinic and around the world. In 1986, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the third week of October as National Infection Control Week. Since then ,national organizations and health care facilities have used this week to raise awareness of infection prevention and to effect reductions in health care-associated infections.

There are things patients can do to prevent the spread of infection both to and from them while in the hospital.

Do I need to go to the hospital?

Prevention is always preferable to treatment when it comes to health care. If your doctor does want to admit you to a hospital, your first question should be is it necessary? Some health care and surgery can be accomplished as effectively and with less risk if done as an outpatient.

If hospitalization is necessary, choose wisely. If you need surgery, select a hospital (and surgeon) that has significant experience with your operation. Ask about infection rates for the surgeon and the facility.

Is this an emergency? If you have ever been to an emergency room, you know it can be very busy and the waits can be very long. An emergency rooms’ primary role is providing immediate care in life threatening situations such as heart attacks, strokes and trauma. Unfortunately, many patients use emergency rooms for non-life threatening acute or chronic care. Many patients in emergency rooms have infections that can be passed to others through respiratory means such as coughing, by touch or by medical staff in the process of caring for you.

If you have a choice, go to your primary care manager first. If you are unable to do that, then one of the many urgent care facilities can address most of your acute care

needs. Do not expose yourself to the increased risk of infection or the frustration of the high-risk emergency room environment unless you need that level of care.

Wash your hands. It is estimated that health care-associated infections cause nearly 90,000 deaths and add billions to the cost of health care in the U.S. annually. Hospitals are the most common site for these infections because patients tend to be more ill and surgeries tend to be more extensive.

Also, patients receive more invasive care in hospitals including central venous catheters and urinary catheters.

Hand washing and hand sanitizing with an alcohol-based rub are important barriers to the spread of infections. It only protects you if it is done by your health care providers before they have contact with you – every time.

It isn’t always easy, but you have the right to ask your health care providers if they have washed their hands or to wash them in front of you. Patients’ asking has been shown to increase health care providers’ frequency of hand washing.

There are other mechanisms, procedures and policies that hospitals should have to protect you from infection. Proper insertion and care of catheters and removing the catheters as soon as no longer needed reduce the risk of infections. Judicious use of antibiotics can prevent and effectively treat infections. On the other hand using inappropriate antibiotic or prescribing antibiotics for viral infections such as colds, sore throat or simple bronchitis can lead to antibiotic resistance in bacteria and create difficult to treat organisms such as MRSA. Your family and other visitors can be at risk and can be a risk for you. If they have infections, they should not visit you until they are well. When they visit, they should practice hand hygiene, wash their hands or use hand sanitizer, prior to touching you. They should do it again if they have hand contact with items in the room or with other patients/ staff. And they should do it again after they leave to protect themselves and those at home.

Consider having an advocate to help look out for your best interest. An advocate can watch over you when you are unable. He or she can watch to be sure all medical staff is doing hand hygiene before touching you. Advocates can also be a second set of ears when you receive important information from your health care providers. For more in-

Being aware of the risks and preparing to mitigate the risk can make your hospital stay safer and less stressful.

The Joint Commission, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology are just a few of the many organizations that are very involved in the prevention of infections in health care settings. There are also many websites that can help you select the best hospital for your situation. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has a site called “Hospital Compare” at www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov. It will help you evaluate and compare hospital care for certain medical conditions and surgical procedures. TJC has “Quality Check” at www.qualitycheck.org/consumer/searchQCR. aspx which provides quality information about specific hospitals.

ID Checks at KAHC In accordance with Army Regulation 40-400 Chapter 2 all persons, including Soldiers in uniform, must show satisfactory evidence of their beneficiary status when receiving health care at military treatment facilities.

A valid identification card and enrollment in the Defense Eligibility Reporting System will establish beneficiary status.

Children under age 10 must be enrolled in DEERS, but are not routinely issued an ID card. Their proof of eligibility is the parent’s ID card.

All patients age 10 and older must present their identification cards when checking-in for appointments and picking up or submitting prescriptions. In circumstances when a person, other than the patient, requests to pick up a prescription, they must provide the patient’s military ID card or a copy of the card.

FORT LEE FIRE PREVENTION AGENDA Fort Lee’s annual fire prevention campaign kicks off Oct. 9 with activities ranging from special displays to a parade. The event lineup includes Child Development Center visits on Oct. 9, 17 and 25.

Each occasion includes a story time with Sparky the Firedog, a safety house and fire truck exhibit, and fire extinguisher training for employees. Four community center visits are also planned. Romeo Company Named 2012 AIT BB Champs

The 2012 Advanced Individual Training Basketball League came to an end Sept. 12. The stage was set for the final four companies to play for their right to compete in the championship game and ultimately be crowned champions.

In the final rounds, Tango Company defeated Whiskey Co. in dominating fashion, 25-5, as Romeo Co. advanced by defeating Mike Co., 27-18, setting the stage for the two high-octane offenses in Tango Co. and Romeo Co. to battle in the championship game.

From the tip-off, both teams showed tremendous discipline and fundamental basketball skills as neither squad rushed or forced shots while making good decisions in moving the basketball. But after a few missed shots, it was clear that rebounding would play a big role in who would win the game.

Tango Co. scored only four points

in the first half, and they were made by one of the team’s leading scorers, Wayne Thomas (game high nine points). Romeo Co. showed more balanced team play as three of its players scored three or more points each for a combined total of 10 points in the first half.

Down 10-4 after the halftime break, Tango Co.’s aggressive attacks to the basket, led by Thomas and Ian Lepla (five points), shifted the momentum in their favor as they started to mount a late comeback, bringing their team within two points with a little over three minutes left in the game.

Romeo Co. remained conservative but consistent – five different players scored including its star player Jalen Brown, with six points – and great rebounding from team leader Isaiah Brock, and Sammie Likely kept them ahead of the Tango Co. rally all the way up to the final buzzer.

Romeo Co. defeated Tango Co. 1715 to become the 2012 AIT Basketball League champions.

“He was self-medicating with drugs and alcohol,” Riley said. “There was no way I could 100 percent blame him for it because he was only 20 years old and couldn’t legally buy that stuff on his own.

It was his battle buddies who were giving him the alcohol thinking they were helping him while they were actually failing him.”

Steele was chaptered out of the Army in August 2011 and, according to a Facebook post in January, he was participating in a residential rehabilitation program. On Feb. 7, his birthday, Steele’s parents made note of his progress as he prepared for discharge from hospital. In March, the former Soldier disappeared, leaving friends and family behind. On July 13, Steele ended his life.

“The whole story hurts my heart because he was like a son to me,” said Riley, who concluded with this final thought, “Listen to your Soldiers; not just what they’re saying but how they’re acting and what seems out of place. If they’re reaching out for help, be there always and nev-

er give up until you know for certain that they’re OK. That’s what real leaders do.”

Sgt. 1st Class Shawntez Edmonson, the final speaker of the trainings session, recalled the loss of a subordinate Soldier to suicide during a 2006 deployment to Iraq.

Every aspect of the assignment was difficult, he noted. The harsh environment and mounting IED casualties, to include their sergeant major, taxed even the most seasoned combat veterans and younger troops walked a tightrope between composure and panic. “(Spc. Vincent Kamka) was the sort of Soldier who never complained,” Edmonson recalled. “He didn’t have discipline issues, he was usually the first one to volunteer and he pushed himself harder every day. He was just the sort of person you took a lot of interest in because he clearly wanted to learn and improve himself as an individual.”

Edmonson learned that Kamka was the small, quiet kid in high school who often felt isolated and ridiculed. The Army, in his opinion, was the opportunity to feel like a member of a team. Sure, there were occasional incidents in which fellow troops doled out jabs and jeers, but he seemed to be adept at letting it roll of his back. That

combined with his eager attitude made him a star performer throughout the 15-month deployment.

“In the last week before we were scheduled to go home, we were in charge of a checkpoint and it was our final mission,” Edmonson said. “On this particular day, everybody was out there on time, pumped up and motivated. Kamka was in the first truck and left to use the latrine before he started his shift in the gunner’s position.”

Noticing that the Soldier had not returned, Edmonson sent others out to look for him. Then a radio call from a quick reaction force notified the sergeant that one of his Soldiers appeared to have been killed by a sniper. He reported to the scene and confirmed the identification. A subsequent investigation determined that suicide was the cause of Kamka’s death.

“I can’t even begin to describe the emotions you feel as the NCO who was responsible for the training and well-being of that Soldier,” Edmonson said. “It’s definitely emotional because at the end of the day you’re left with the fact that this was not supposed to happen. This was my Soldier … did I do everything I could to prevent this from happening? What do I tell my unit? How would I explain this to

the family? Eventually, you patch it all up and carry on with the mission, but the feeling of loss doesn’t go away.”

Edmonson also reflected on the suicide of Sgt. Deatrick Beverly, a Soldier he met shortly after his arrival at Fort Lee. With an outward persona that screamed successful Soldier – physically fit, motivated and innovative – Beverly was a bit of a jokester and easy to like.

“The last time I saw him, we were in the motor pool doing an inventory and wrapping everything up for the day,” Edmonson said. “On the way out, he was joking around and everything seemed OK. (That same evening) he took his life.”

Reiterating the point that warning signs aren’t always evident, and may be tricky to identify among Soldiers who have learned to keep their personal lives separate from their military duties, Edmonson said suicide awareness training is the best option.

“If we raise that level of awareness and show that we truly care as an Army team, that’s going to make a huge difference,” he concluded. “Let’s send a loud and clear message also to the entire community that they can talk to any one of us and get help.

It’s the reason we’re here today … let’s save a life.”
