Army Family Covenant Commitment Endures

SAN ANTONIO – Four years ago this month, the Army announced the Army Family Covenant, which promised to provide Soldiers and families a quality of life commensurate with their service.

To help Soldiers and families stressed by years of war, the Army substantially increased funding for programs in areas such as Soldier and family services, behavioral health, housing, child care, education, and employment.

Today, headlines about defense budget cuts are prompting people to ask whether the Army is going to

keep its promises.

The short answer is yes. Leaders change and situations change, but the Army’s commitment to Soldiers and families endures.

Under the AFC, the Army developed and enhanced a range of programs that build Soldier and family strength, resilience and readiness. These programs include Survivor Outreach Services, Child, Youth and School Services, New Parent Support, the Military Spouse Employment Program, Strong Bonds, and the Wounded Warriors Sports Program.

Under the AFC, the Army has provided new and renovated housing for thousands of families and single

Soldiers, and constructed more than 150 new child care and youth centers. The Army has increased the number of Military Family Life Consultants who provide confidential non-medical counseling for Soldiers and families, and the number of behavioral health care providers who provide behavioral health services before, during and after deployment.

I ask for your direct assistance and engagement in preserving the great relationship Fort Lee has with urgent care clinics out in the community that support our Soldiers and Family members. Patient First is an urgent care center that helps ensure that our patients have easy access to medical care when Kenner Army Health Clinic is closed or on days we have an abnormally high volume of patients who need acute medical care.

The leadership at Patient First has brought to my attention that many Soldiers are being dropped off in the evening and are not picked up before the clinic closes. Due to Patient First’s commitment to total care, they cannot leave patients sitting on

Patient First is open 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. every day. Please make sure that when Soldiers are dropped off, that someone comes back to pick them up before 10 p.m. If Soldiers are dropped off at another urgent care center, please make sure that the duty driver knows when that clinic closes and to return at least 10 minutes before staff are trying to go home.

Repeat offenses of this nature could cause local providers not to accept TRICARE patients and thus limit our precious access to care. If the problem persists, I will start tracking these Soldier visits and report them directly to the appropriate Brigadelevel commander. Thank you.

Villages Provides ‘Sweet Homes’ For Families

It’s been four years since the Residential Community Initiative was launched at Fort Lee and a transformation has replaced old military quarters with contemporary housing not dissimilar from neighborhoods outside the gates.

Pinnacle Property Management, better known as the Villages at Fort Lee, is responsible for the day-to-day operations and oversees all aspect of resident care.

Priscilla Lewis, a leasing manager for Pinnacle said taking care of the residents is the best part of her job.

“We all love the residents here,” Lewis said. “We are celebrating our families in October with a neighborhood based Resident Appreciation Week.”

During the month, each residential area will receive event location information at their door on the Monday of their neighborhood’s resident appreciation celebration.

“It’s a way to say ‘thank you’ for choosing us,” Lewis said.

Recently, the initial RCI development period was completed, resulting in 1,505 homes online for military members.

Changes in the housing areas include spacious duplexes instead of the fourplex apartments that were common in older military housing units. Garages have replaced carports and unsheltered parking lots. Brightly colored “totlots” speckle the villages.

Most of the homes in the villages now are three- or fourbedrooms. Floor plans average between 900 square feet

in a two-bedroom to approximately 2,500 square feet in a five-bedroom. The average master bedroom size is 14-by10 feet and subsequent sleeping areas average 12-by-10 feet. All homes have at least 80 square feet of interior storage and one- or two-car garages. The homes have modern, brand name appliances and some amenities that would be considered “luxury features” in comparable civilian housing communities.

Although there is a waiting list with 68 families, most will move into a home within the next ninety days.

The demolition and rebuild of Monroe Manor is on hold awaiting Department of the Army approval. Once completed that project will create a mix of 90 additional duplex and single family homes, Lewis said.

Fort Lee residents also have access to activity and entertainment venues. The Villages at Fort Lee have community centers located on Sisisky Boulevard, in Washington Grove and in Jackson Circle. The centers at Sisisky and Jackson Circle have splash parks with restrooms and covered benches for residents’ use as well as fitness centers and play areas for children in full view of the commercial exercise equipment. The Washington Grove Neighborhood Center is available for rental, has tennis and basketball courts and a playground on premises. The Adams Chase Community Center features the media room with stadium seating used for community functions hosted by the Villages.

Community events sponsored by the Villages are popular with the residents. In July, the annual summer Life at Lee event brought many residents to the Sisisky Community

Center, Lewis said.

“We all enjoyed food, fun and information from organizations located on the installation,” she said.

In August, a back-to-school event offered parents an opportunity to speak with the Fort Lee school liaison officer.

In September, to celebrate no injuries or significant damage, a hurricane and earthquake survival party was held.

Lewis said residents receive information every other week when a bulletin is delivered to their email accounts.

“We also have a Facebook page which allows us to update residents who ‘like’ us,” she said. “This is a great way to communicate our upcoming events and disseminate information.”

“From the day I arrived at Fort Lee, the Villages staff members have worked to make our stay here incredible,” he said. “When you look at my needs (Melendez and his wife have 4 kids), where else can I get a 2,765 squarefoot home with five bedrooms for my Basic Allowance for Housing?

“There are many advantages to living in the Villages including if I were to deploy I know my family is safe and I do not have to worry about any maintenance issues,” he continued. “We do not have to mow the lawn or repair anything, so during the service member’s absence they can be assured that their family is living comfortably. I am sad to say that I have to move in January. I would love to take the staff of the Villages with me. They have all been wonderful to me and my family.”

Lee Soldier Selected For Prestigious Assignment

A Combined Arms Support Command Soldier has been selected for a prestigious assignment in the nation’s capital.

Staff Sgt. Don Drivas, a power generation equipment repairer, has been assigned to the White House Communications Agency. The Detroit native said it is definitely a career enhancer.

“I think it is pretty tremendous for me as far as progressing my career,” he said. It definitely not something everyone gets an opportunity to do. You definitely have to be an outstanding Soldier or NCO to get this assignment.”

Drivas will become one of a team of military and civilian members who sup-

port the telecommunications requirements of the president, vice president, their staffs, the National Security Council and other governmental entities.

The 28-year-old Drivas, who earned the CASCOM NCO of the year title for 2011, said he had applied to the agency before. Upon getting the news that his application had finally been accepted, he said he was excited.

“I wanted to tell the world and that is pretty much what I did,” he continued. “I called my parents, told my wife and the first sergeant. The first sergeant helped me out tremendously.”

Headquarters and Headquarters Company, CASCOM 1st Sgt. LaDerek Green said the fact Drivas was selected out of possibly thousands of applicants says much about him and his upbringing.

“It says that Staff Sgt. Drivas career and lifetime of demonstrating excellence,” he said. “It also says that his parents have done an outstanding job in raising him on values that have made him an outstanding Soldier. I personally think he is in the top 1 percent of all NCOs in the Army.”

WHCA Soldiers are typically assigned for four years. Drivas said he intends to remain progressive.

“My goals is to keep moving up,” he said. “I’m looking to make the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club.”

The SAMC is an organization of select NCO that uses a rigorous nomination process to induct members.

Membership is based on such qualities as leadership ability, technical and tactical excellence and care for Soldiers and families.

Best Warrior Brings Army Secretary to Lee

Family, MWR Clubs Get Makeovers

Patrons will soon see improvements to the Warrior Zone, Lee Club, Regimental Club and HideAway.

Enhancing the sports experience for its customers is the primary goal of the updates to the facilities, said Lee Farmer, Family and MWR Business Operations Division chief for all facilities other than the Warrior Zone.

At the Lee Club, the Nothin’ Fancy Lounge will be converted into a sports bar, that features 20 flat-screen televisions and a broadcast package that includes all of the networks that show college and professional games, said Farmer. It also will be painted and re-furnished.

While the HideAway already provides a lot with the programs it currently offers, Farmer said it’s missing out on the Saturday to Monday sporting event opportunities.

Therefore, additional TVs will be installed to bring the total number to 10. It will also feature college and professional sporting events.

“These changes are being made because the garrison

commander wants to make the Family and MWR facilities more inviting to patrons by offering them updated facilities with activities that enhance esprit de corps,” said Farmer.

“The patrons will have the opportunity to relax and enjoy sporting events in close proximity to their homes.”

The Warrior Zone, one of the latest offerings to open to Fort Lee patrons, will also receive a major update.

“The Warrior Zone is in the process of being converted over to a sports bar lounge that will be fully equipped with HD televisions, college and professional sports packages, pools tables, trivia games, and a new state of the art golf simulator,” said Alyssa Hornby, Family and MWR recreation program manager. “The facility also will be refurnished with lounge and restaurant-type furniture.”

Most of these changes have already started and the HideAway should be operational within a week, Nothin’ Fancy within three weeks and the Warrior Zone within 30 days.

The Regimental Club is set for a major renovation to its kitchen. When it closes for block leave this year in December, the kitchen will not reopen until June 2012,

said Farmer. There will be a total renovation to include replacement of all equipment and repairing and painting the kitchen and food storage areas.

During its kitchen closure, the Regimental Club will not offer the lunch or catering program, and patrons are urged to use the Lee Club while the Regimental Club is closed. The evening entertainment programs – such as the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday dances – will continue throughout the renovation.

“The update will provide the latest technology in kitchen equipment,” said Farmer. “The new layout will improve efficiency in the kitchen which will increase the level of service provided to our patrons.”

Farmer said the Family and MWR directorate is excited to make these changes and asks patrons to be patient as these updates are made.

“We appreciate the support and patience of our patrons as we make these much needed changes,” he said. “The end result will be that of providing our Soldiers, families and civilians with the level of service they expect and deserve.”

Education Coalition Brings Conference to Team Lee

Military life is synonymous with change and its impact on young dependents can be significant, that’s why the Military Child Education Coalition was founded.

The nonprofit, worldwide organization’s work is focused on ensuring educational opportunities exist for all military-connected children affected by mobility, family separation and transition. The coalition work consists of research, developing and publishing resources, and conducting professional institutes and conferences.

According to the group’s research, military children move on average six to nine times during their kindergarten to 12th grade years with academic standards, courses, access to programs, promotion and graduation, programs for children with special needs and transfer and acceptance of records varying greatly between schools. “By providing information, strategies, resources and trainings, the MCEC helps to level the playing field for military children and youth,� said Nancy Elzie, the Fort Lee school liaison officer.

The MCEC will be on Fort Lee Oct. 13 with two sessions of their Parent Education Conference. The first session, set for 9 a.m. to noon in the Soldier Support Center, will focus on school transitions. The seminar

will examine the social and academic impact of multiple school moves on students of all ages. Participants will have the opportunity to explore strategies and receive a variety of resources that will help them get information and make plans to ensure smooth transitions for their students.

Parents of children infant to 5 years old will come together to explore facts about early learning in the Preparing for the Journey: Giving Your Child a Head Start on the Road to Academic Success session.

Participants will be able to develop plans to build literacy, science and math activities into their daily routines.

Kindergarten readiness also will be addressed. Parents attending the event will receive the MCEC book, “Chart Your Course: Preparing for the Journey,� along with other early literacy resources.

The final session for the morning event, will focus on elementary school success. Parents of elementary school students will explore the keys to academic success in elementary school: organization, communication and involvement.

A special evening session for parents of middle and high school students will focus on a suggested curriculum that will ensure an on-time graduation (despite school transitions) and a competitive resume for college applications.

According to MCEC research, planning for posthigh school education needs to begin in middle school.

During this session, the college application process, admissions portfolios and financial aid will be addressed.

Participants will receive a Chart Your Course Kit, including a planning guide, a calendar outlining college admission and financial aid tasks and an interactive DVD. “The information presented during both sessions of this Parent to Parent Training will address how parents can help their children overcome obstacles to academic success as a result of the military lifestyle and provide them with resources to assist them in their role as their child's best advocate,� Elzie said.

Fort Lee’s first lady, Michelle Hodge, spouse of Combined Arms Support Command and Fort Lee commanding general Maj. Gen. James L. Hodge, said the conference is well worth the time. “I hope that the parents of our wonderful Fort Lee children will come out for this fantastic presentation,� she said “If you have not taken part in the past, I would highly encourage you to participate as these facilitators give out very useful information and tools to help school children.�

FORT MEADE, Md. – Due to the unusually high number of Soldiers attaining high promotion points without attending the appropriate schools, the Army is making changes to the semi-centralized promotion system that will be effective Jan. 1. “This change – which only affects the Advanced Leadership Course and the Warrior Leadership Course for E5 and E6 – facilitates the leader development imperative to ensure Soldiers get the right mix of developmental opportunities at the right time in their careers,� said Sgt. Maj. Debra J. Sturdivant, chief of Enlisted Promotions, Human Resources Command.

The change will also improve the Army’s ability to select the best-qualified Soldiers for promotion, improve readiness at both the grade and MOS level, and drive Soldier behavior, she said. “This happened because Soldiers were maxing out their military education with legitimate correspondence courses, but weren’t attending the NCO Education System schools,� Sturdivant said.

The Army has three distinct elements within the

military-training category: NCOES, resident military training (includes courses such as Equal Opportunity, Combatives, Bus Driver, Combat Lifesaver, etc.), and computer-based training.

To ensure Soldiers get the “right mix� of classes, ceilings have been imposed on each of these elements.

The total points that can be earned in military education is 260 for promotion to sergeant and 280 for promotion to staff sergeant – this remains unchanged.

A maximum of 40 percent of the points a Soldier can potentially earn are applied to the NCOES element within the military-education category (104 maximum points for Soldiers competing for sergeant and 112 maximum points for Soldiers competing for staff sergeant), Sturdivant said. “This design intentionally limits a Soldier’s ability to ‘max’ promotion points in the NCOES category to those who are officially designated as Distinguished Honor Graduate or as the Distinguished Leadership Graduate, she said.

Under the NCOES category: • Distinguished honor/leader graduates earn 104 points (competing for sergeant) and 112 points (competing for staff sergeant) respectively.

• Commandant’s List graduates receive 92 points (competing for sergeant) and 101 points (competing for staff sergeant) respectively. • Graduates receive 80 points (competing for sergeant) and 90 points (competing for staff sergeant) respectively.

Active-component Soldiers should see revised scores, based on these newly-established ceilings, on the automated Promotion Point Worksheet beginning Dec. 5, Sturdivant said. She said Soldiers recommended for promotion and integrated onto the recommended list not later than Dec. 8 will have these ceilings applied in determining their promotion scores for Jan. 1 selections.

A new DA form 3355 will soon be published and Army Reserve AGR Soldiers should use that form to record their promotion points according to the new ceilings, Sturdivant said. The new ceilings must be implemented on promotion-board actions effective Nov. 1 in order to meet the timeline for Jan. 1 promotions, she said.

The new change was announced in a MILPER Message that was scheduled to be released on Saturday, Sturdivant said.

Festival Reveals Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Growing Traditions Featuring craft vendors, an assortment of adorable farm animals and bushels of locally grown produce, the Heritage Harvest Festival at Chippokes Plantation State Park in Surry on Oct. 15, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is a good opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the cool fall temperatures.

This annual festival is a living history event, demonstrating the planting and harvesting techniques of early American farmers, and it all takes place on the oldest working farm in the nation.

Harvest festival organizers are encouraging parents to take advantage of this learning opportunity â&#x20AC;&#x201C; producing crops and raising livestock on small family farms is part of our nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legacy, and this event provides an opportunity to educate younger generations on how raw materials are transformed into the food on the dinner table. Field demonstrations will show old-fashioned methods for harvesting corn, cotton and peanuts. Staff members will also reveal grinding, preparing, cooking and food preservation techniques in the days before refrigeration.

The festival offers many other activities as well.

Crafters and artisans will present their wares alongside an array of alpacas, goats and sheep. Dominion Power is offering free rides on their Teddy Bear Express Trackless Train. A major feature of the event is the performance by the Dixieland Band combo from Fort Leeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 392nd Army Band.

Whether attending for information, relaxation or entertainment, the harvest festival is a good way to get into the spirit of the fall months and upcoming festivities like Halloween and Thanksgiving.

The festival site is near the 1930â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s era sawmill in Chippokes State Park (695 Chippokes Park Road). The event is sponsored by the Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum, a non-profit, educational organization that provides information about agriculture, forestry and conservation. Know Facts, Risks of Breast Cancer

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month – it is the month when people become more educated about the signs of breast cancer, its symptoms and how to help prevent it.

The first known use of a pink ribbon in connection with breast cancer awareness was in the fall of 1991, when the Susan G. Komen Foundation handed out pink ribbons to participants in its New York City race for breast cancer survivors. The pink ribbon was adopted as the official symbol of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month the next year, in 1992. A pink and blue ribbon is sometimes used to symbolize breast cancer in men, which is relatively rare. The pink and blue ribbon was designed in 1996

by Nancy Nick, President and Founder of the John W. Nick Foundation to bring awareness that “Men Get Breast Cancer Too!” Out of every seven women, one will develop breast cancer at some time during her lifetime, compared to just one in twenty during the 1960s.

Here are some facts about breast cancer:

• It is the most common malignancy in women • It is the second cause of cancer death • It is three times more common than all gynecologic malignancies put together • There are 230,480 female cases and 2,140 male cases of breast cancer diagnosed in the U.S. each year • 43,000 women and 450 men die from breast cancer in the U.S. each year • One in every 100 breast cancer patients is male • 50 percent of all invasive breast cancers are diagnosed in women over 65.

• Breast cancer is much more aggressive when it develops in younger women What puts a woman at risk of developing breast cancer? Although age is the most important risk factor for breast cancer, the risk is not the same for all women of a given age group. Women with the following factors have an increased risk of developing breast cancer: • A personal or family history of breast cancer • Certain breast changes found on biopsy • Certain genetic changes • Menstrual periods before age 12 or menopause after age 55

• Having a first child after age 30 or never having a child • Long-term use (more than five years) of menopausal hormone therapy • Dense breast tissue • Radiation therapy to the chest before age 30 • Alcohol use • Having taken the drug diethylstilbestrol during pregnancy • Obesity • Lack of exercise • Smoking How can I lower the risk of developing breast cancer? There are some things which raise your risk and you cannot avoid – such as getting older and/or having a certain genetic makeup.

However, you can lower your risk of breast cancer by changing those risk factors that can be changed. Women who are physically active, limit alcohol intake, exercise regularly, don’t smoke and maintain a healthy body weight have a lower risk of getting breast cancer.

QM BOLC Lieutenants Give Back Students from Quartermaster Basic Officer Leadership Course class 11-010 put their hearts and backs into a Petersburg Habitat for Humanity project Friday. At 9 a.m., the lieutenants began digging a trench for an underground water drainage pipe, to relieve the home of water damage. Rashida Abdullah, the future owner of the home, was ecstatic when she saw the class of 45 people working on her home. She stated that the lieutenants â&#x20AC;&#x153;were a blessing to her and her family.â&#x20AC;? At the end of the day the class was able to donate 150 work hours to Abdullahâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home. Second Lt. Brandon Edmiston said â&#x20AC;&#x153;It feels great to be out of the classroom and doing something that benefits the community.â&#x20AC;?

Army, Pentagon Seek Small, ‘Throwable’ Robots WASHINGTON –The Army, Marine Corps and the Pentagon’s Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization are working to procure and deliver thousands of small, easily transportable “throwable” robots equipped with surveillance cameras designed to beam back video from confined spaces, buildings, tunnels and other potentially dangerous locations, service officials said.

“These robots can provide dismounted troops that extra bit of stand-off distance,” said Marine Corps Lt. Col. Dave Thompson, project manager, Robotic Systems Joint Project Office.

The Joint IED Defeat Organization, or JEIDDO, is in the process of responding to a joint urgent operational needs statement for an ultra-light recon robot capability to support dismounted operations in Afghanistan. Combatant commanders are looking to receive an initial delivery of about 4,000 of the small robots, some of which are engineered to be thrown through a second-story window to provide “eyes” on a potentially hazardous combat situation, said Mathew Way, program integrator for Mitigate and Neutralize, JIEDDO. After finishing up a market survey of which commercially available technologies might be able to meet the needs of the Joint Urgent Operational Needs Statement –

and quickly conducting testing on numerous small robots designed to establish quantitative data with the National Institute for Standards and Technology – JIEDDO chose three lightweight, “throwable” robots to run through a series of combat-assessments in Afghanistan.

Included among those systems are iRobot’s 110 First Look robot, MacroUSA’s Armadillo V2 Micro Unmanned Ground Vehicle, and QinetiQ North America’s Dragon Runner.

About 50 of each of these robots will be deployed with forces in different parts of Afghanistan in order to assess the capability of the “throwbots” to perform across different types of combat terrain. The ’bots will be placed with infantry, engineering and explosive ordnance disposal units, among others, Way said.

“What we are going to try to do is give a sampling of every type of system down range across different regions of Afghanistan. More than likely there will be more than one system needed to answer this JUONS,” said Way. The theater assessment in Afghanistan, Outside the Continental United States trail, is aimed at informing development of requirements regarding the tasks the systems will be needed to perform.

“This OCONUS trial will give us the Soldier feedback that we need. This will allow us to go to industry and tell

them what we want. JIEDDO can then use those precise requirements to support a rapid, open competition, to then field the final solution or solutions to fulfill the need,” Way said.

“This is an area of joint interest. JIEDDO has a large part of this, as does the Army’s Rapid Equipping Force and the Marine Corps. We are all looking at similar systems. RS JPO is trying to do some coordination between all of these organizations and see if we can look at the systems that are out there, look at the requirements, and start to posture ourselves for the sustainment and the maintenance of these systems in the long term,” said Thompson.

The anticipated value of the “throwbots” is in part driven by the frequency of dismounted small unit and squad patrols in Afghanistan, where Soldiers and Marines routinely check areas for IEDs and insurgent activity, Thompson explained.

At the moment, many units use the Small Unmanned Ground Vehicle 320, a small tactical robot equipped with video reconnaissance technology that is 32 pounds. Still, there is a need for something that is lighter, more easily transportable by dismounted units on the move and able to be “thrown” into forward locations such as buildings and caves, Way and Thompson said.

Best Warriors Battle for Top Army Titles

Twenty-six motivated Soldiers began their pursuit of prestigious Army titles here Monday as they completed the first challenges of the 2011 Best Warrior Competition.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Best Warrior is the Sergeant Major of the Army-sponsored event that culminates with two Soldiers being awarded the titles of U.S. Army Noncommissioned Officer or Soldier of the Year.

Thirteen major commands/regions are represented, to include U.S. Army Europe, U.S. Army Pacific, U.S. Army Reserve Command and others. The newcomer this year is the Installation Management Command.

The 2011 candidates were welcomed to the competition and Fort Lee on Sunday during a special dinner that featured Army SMA Raymond F. Chandler III. At 5 a.m.

Monday, they were standing on the infield of Williams Stadium with more than 1,000 advanced individual training students cheering them on from the stands as they prepared for the Army Physical Fitness Test.

Sgt. Guy Mellor, the NCO of the Year candidate representing the Army National Guard, would later describe that moment as an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “This is real … we’re here competing at the national level, and I’m sure it means a lot to every one of these competitors.”

To prepare for the physical demands of Best Warrior, Mellor, a cannon crewmember assigned to the 145th Field Artillery Battalion, Salt Lake City, said he maintained a steady workout regimen – six hours a week and at least one hour each day – with lots of running, pushups and sit-ups. “It takes a lot of dedication,” he said. “You have to set goals and meet those goals. You have to push yourself.”

That’s a common trait among Best Warrior candidates.

Without self-motivation, none of them would have made it through the various unit, battalion, brigade and commandlevel competitions that secured their spot at Best Warrior, which is commonly referred to as the “super bowl” of Army competitive events.

The pushup, sit-up and two-mile run events begin.

During the 10-minute rest breaks between each event, the stadium vibrates with a cacophony of cadences, unit songs and loud cheers. It’s an example of what lies at the heart of Best Warrior – the meaning of Army Strong, the professionalism of the Soldier and the best-trained band of brothers and sisters in America.

“It’s overwhelming at times,” said Sgt. Douglas McBroom, the NCO of the Year candidate for the Army Materiel Command. “I’m so glad to be here. I’ve been training for an entire year to be here, and I’m just ecstatic.”

Assigned to the 690th Rapid Port Operating Element at Fort Eustis, McBroom said he received a lot of good advice on his way to Best Warrior. Fellow leaders and Soldiers encouraged him to stay motivated and to keep a positive attitude regardless of whether he did well or poorly at an event.

“It’s important to keep driving forward and focus on the next event,” said the native of Corpus Christie, Texas.

“Just do what you know and hope you come out on top.”

While those words of encouragement were helpful, McBroom said something much more personal is pushing him to win.

“I get my biggest motivation from my mother and my grandmother,” he said while pulling up the sleeve of his fitness uniform to reveal a black metal bracelet inscribed with two names: Michelle McBroom and Bessie Goode.

“They’re currently battling breast cancer, but they’re doing OK, keeping strong and their strength give me strength. It keeps me moving forward.

“Winning would mean so much to my Soldiers, my unit, my family and my community back home. But it’s my mom and my grandmother who are really pushing me forward to exceed all expectations. I’m just really glad to be here for them and to take all of this in while getting some of the best training in the world.”

The APFT and a slew of other events are now behind the competitors. On Monday, they completed a written test and essay, followed by a training session focused on the new Army Physical Readiness Test that will soon replace the current APFT. Tuesday consisted of a board appearance where each competitor faced a panel of command sergeants major from several key organizations throughout the Army.

After pre-combat checks and instruction – as well as a visit by Secretary of the Army John McHugh and SMA Chandler – Wednesday morning, the competitors completed an urban orienteering event where they demonstrated their knowledge of common warrior tasks. The excitement level was amped up considerably this morning as the warriors woke up in a field setting and began a two-day series of challenges that will range from urban assaults and detainee operations to combatives and qualifying with the Army’s standard M-4 rifle.

Best Warrior concludes with an awards luncheon Monday at the Association of the United States Army National Convention in Washington, D.C. Fort Lee Honors Fallen Warriors

The Fort Lee community came out in full force Saturday to support the second annual Run for the Fallen event at Williams Stadium.

The event was coordinated by the Army Community Services Survivor Outreach Services office and had hundreds of Soldiers and civilians racing around the track to remember fallen military members.

Run for the Fallen started in 2008 when a group of runners ran from Fort Irwin, Calif., to the Arlington National Cemetery – one mile for each military member who was killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Since then, organizations across America have paid a yearly tribute by sponsoring their own local runs.

Christine Murphy, an advisor with the ACS SOS program, said she was glad about the tremendous support from the Fort Lee community and thanked the survivors for attending.

“Run for the Fallen is a very special event honoring our fallen military members,” said Murphy. “Many survivors are here with us today to carry on their memories. We are moved by your continued sacrifices and we want you to know we will never forget.”

More than 2,700 miles were ran to remember the fallen at Fort Lee’s event, with people placing the name of the

service member they were remembering on a sticker on their chest.

During the ceremony, Maj. Gen. James L. Hodge, CASCOM and Fort Lee commanding general, expressed his thanks to the families in attendance as well as the Soldiers and civilians who wanted to remember a fallen military member.

“We are very grateful that each of you have joined us today – a day of honor and remembrance; a day for many that is also bittersweet,” he said “Michelle and I are honored to be here to and pay tribute to America’s sons and daughters who gave their last full measure for the freedoms we hold so dearly and to their families who bear the weight of such a profound loss.

“Today, Fort Lee along with many other communities across America join in this moving tribute to honor and remember and to publicly express our gratitude, our respect and our resolve for our fallen comrades and their families,” Hodge continued. “Each loss is shared by the community, our military and the nation, and we mourn for each service member for they answered the nation’s call and they fought to defeat terrorism and to defend our sacred liberties.”

Several family members from Fort Lee’s own SOS program attended the run and walked the first lap – the survivor’s lap.

Tate on July 13, 2010, when he was killed in Afghanistan, said the community support for the event was amazing.

“It’s nice to see a lot of people come out to share the moment – I even saw a few that had my husband’s name on their chest,” said Tate. “I would like to thank the Soldiers and civilians for coming out here to remember the fallen – they didn’t have to come here.”

Chief Warrant Officer 5 Candis Martin was at the event to honor her son, 1st Lt. Thomas Martin, who died while serving in Iraq in October 2007. She said she was honored by how much support she saw.

“This is huge – for this many people to come out and remember the fallen,” Martin said. “They always say ‘we’re the land of the free because of the brave’ and we definitely are. If we didn’t have these young people who are willing to put their lives on the line, we wouldn’t have the country we have right now. To see the support, that’s just huge.”

Cynthia Reed, who was at the event to honor her brother Sgt. Jeffrey Reed who was killed in Iraq in March 2009, said this event was great to help others remember a survivor’s loss.

“I think it’s really important to spread awareness about the lives of Soldiers we’ve lost in this war,” said Reed.

“It’s nice to see the support and all of the Soldiers, civilians and public here saying they remember, despite how long it’s been since we lost someone.”

Fire Prevention Week kicks off Sunday and Fort Lee Fire and Emergency Services wants to help families stay protected against fires.

Fire and Emergency Services reinforces the new smoke alarm recommendations and will be in the community sharing fire prevention tips and campaigning for fire safety during Fire Prevention Week, which is Oct. 9-15.

The best way to protect your family from fire is to be ahead of the game.

More than 360,000 home fires were reported in the United States in 2009, according to the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association. As the old saying goes “the best defense is a good offense.”

That’s why Fort Lee Fire and Emergency Services is teaming up with NFPA to let our community know: “It’s Fire Prevention Week. Protect your Family from Fire!”

This year’s campaign focuses on preventing the leading causes of home fires – cooking, heating and electrical equipment, as well as candles and smoking materials.

Additionally, the campaign urges people to protect their homes and families with life-saving technology and planning.

In 2009, 2,565 people died in home fires. Nearly all of these deaths could have been prevented by taking a few simple precautions like having working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan, keeping things that can burn away from the stove and always turning off space heaters before going to bed.

Fire is a dangerous opponent, but by anticipating the hazards, you are much less likely to be one of the nearly 13,000 people injured in home fires each year.

ing an escape plan that’s practiced regularly and equipping homes with life-saving technologies like smoke alarms and fire sprinklers.

The following tips will help keep a family safe if there is a fire in the home: • Install smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home (including the basement).

• Interconnect all smoke alarms in the home so when one sounds, they all sound.

• Test smoke alarms at least monthly and replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they do not respond when tested.

• Make sure everyone in your home knows how to respond if the smoke alarm sounds.

• Pull together everyone in your household and make a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible ways out. Households with children should consider drawing a floor plan of the home, marking two ways out of each room, including windows and doors.

• If you are building or remodeling your home, consider installing home fire sprinklers.

The outcome of a special event here Friday couldn’t be more fitting for 1st Sgt. Raymond Bean of Bravo Company, 832nd Ordnance Battalion, 59th Ord. Brigade.

Even though he was ill and could not attend the event, he received a dose of feel-good when his unit claimed first place during Fort Lee’s first Ordnance School Commander’s Cup competition at Williams Stadium.

It was the best medicine a doctor could administer, said Bravo Co. Commander Capt. Earl Haliday Jr. “This one’s for the first sergeant who is at home sick,” he said, holding the cup just after the awards presentations. “We dug deep and never quit.”

Eight companies from the 16th and 832nd Ord. battalions “dug deep” in pursuing the top honors in the multi-sport event designed to maintain unit pride, foster friendly competition and give students a break from their daily academic routines.

Bravo Company won several key events and finished strong in others to claim the Cup. Haliday said the unit’s pride and enthusiasm was a big factor.

“Their esprit was beyond imaginable – out the roof,” he said.

The “commander” in Commander’s Cup – Ord School Commandant Col. (P) Clark W. Lemasters Jr. – kicked off the competition with a short pep talk. From that point onward, the cup was an event that could be best described as vocal. Cadences, unit mottos and cheering

could be heard throughout the main post as the warriors competed throughout the day. Col. Pharisse Berry, commander, 59th Ord Bde., said the event served as an outlet among other things.

“We wanted to give them the chance to express their esprit de corps – a little camaraderie, a little friendly competition,” he said. “We wanted to let them know that we care about them, that we want them to be well-rounded ordnance warriors.”

The ordnance warriors had plenty of opportunities to compete. There were 10 different events to engage Soldiers. They included basketball, track and field, cross country, combatives and volleyball. More than 100 Soldiers competed in the various events held during the course of the day. Those who didn’t compete cheered occupied the stands and bleachers, cheering for their respective units.

“This was a great event,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Jeffrey Crawford, the 59th’s top enlisted Soldier. “The leaders who put this together did a phenomenal job. And the energy the Soldiers bought to the competition was the icing on the cake.”

The Commander’s Cup is a rotational award. The winner is authorized to keep the trophy until next year’s event. Bravo Co., 832nd Ord. Bn., will have the distinction of being the first unit to have its name engraved on the base of the trophy.
