Finding Truth in Tomb of the Unknowns

The Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery may be our most sacred national site. The marble sarcophagus was quarried in Colorado, fabricated in Vermont and final carvings were made in Virginia. The remains of Soldiers from World War I, World War II and the Korean War lie in rest there. The Soldier from the Vietnam War was identified and exhumed in 1998.

The Tomb Guard is a position of honor for which Soldiers may volunteer. The Old Guard has watched over the tomb non-stop for 24 hours a day since July 2, 1937. The sentinel does not wear rank so that he never outranks the unknown persons of the tomb. The sentinel walks 21 steps across the tomb, pauses for 21 seconds, salutes for 21 seconds and walks the 21 steps again. The number 21 is for the 21 gun salute, the

‘Going Green’ Requires a Few Simple Steps

FORT STEWART, Ga. – Growing up, my mother always told me, “Turn the water off when you’re brushing your teeth,” and nagged, “Make sure to turn off the lights when you’re done in a room!”

Back then, I’d just roll my eyes and groan a bit, thinking she was just trying to make my life difficult. But surprise! moms actually know what they’re talking about sometimes.

Doing simple things like what mom suggested can go far toward helping our environment.

Recycling sounds a lot like a pain in the butt, without any real rewards that you’ll be able to see personally, especially living in the barracks.

But there are ways to make little changes in your life that will save you time and money and, gulp, help the environment.

Turn off your computer at night.

After you finally tap-out of the World of Warcraft for the evening, don’t just put your laptop on sleep mode; take the extra second to push that power button.

It’ll save 40 watt-hours per day, which equals only about 4 cents per day, but that adds up to $14 a year. That’s 14 one-liter

But instead of hazily tossing them all into a trash bag and dragging it out to the dumpster, set up a trash can or bag before the party starts exclusively for glass bottles. Maybe even make it into a game of who-can-dunk-the-most-bottles. It’ll help with clean up the next day, allowing you longer to sleep off the headache. And by recycling them, it reduces air pollution by 20 percent and the related water pollution by 50 percent. If they aren’t recycled, it takes almost a million years for a glass bottle to decompose.

Tragic Shooting Proves Need for Preparation

At approximately 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 5, 2009, a U.S. Soldier, dressed in Army uniform, entered the Soldier Readiness Center at Fort Hood, Texas, armed with two non-military issue pistols, including a semi-automatic.

There were 400 people inside the center, and it was familiar territory for the shooter who worked there. He opened fire and, in the span of 10 minutes, 43 individuals were either dead or seriously wounded. The shooting rampage ended when the gunman was shot five times by a military policeman.

The horror of this incident was witnessed by most of America as national news networks aired minute-by-minute coverage of the tragedy. On U.S. military installations across the country, emotions ran the gamut from shock and sadness to anger and denial that any such incident could ever happen again … after all, a military base is supposed to be a place of safety and tight security, right?

“Unfortunately, it’s a reality we all have to face, and it existed long before the Fort Hood shooting,” said Ken Towery, garrison antiterrorism officer for Fort Lee. His office is honchoing the installation publicity campaign for Antiterrorism Awareness Month, an observance that stresses the importance of reporting suspicious incidents

and establishing effective crisis response plans that could save lives during attacks like the one in 2009.

“Could an active shooter situation occur here? I think we all know the answer to that question, and anyone who thinks it would never happen is being naïve,” Towery said.

“So the necessity of good planning, training and rehearsals is obvious; it’s the key to limiting injury and death during an active shooter scenario.”

Police Lt. Dan Bateman, the commander of the Police Emergency Response Team at Fort Lee, and a group of his specially trained officers offered a similar perspective as they discussed the Fort Hood shooting and the procedures they would use to quell incidents of that nature.

“Overall, we need to look at the big picture – we have Soldiers walking around every day with weapons and just about anyone can gain access to the installation with the appropriate identification. That makes us a soft target in many respects,” said Department of the Army Civilian Police Sgt. Ron Sims. “So, the best safeguard is immediate reporting if any community member sees something suspicious or suspects a friend, coworker or family member is having trouble. Don’t allow it to escalate into something serious because you’re too busy to report it or want to protect someone.”

Taking emergency response and shelter-in-place training seriously is important as well, Bateman noted. An

analysis of the Fort Hood shooting reveals the speed at which an active-shooter situation develops and drives home the point that a quick-thinking, well-rehearsed response is imperative.

“The initial attack at Fort Hood lasted less than 10 minutes,” Bateman said. “That’s not unusual considering most shooters want to inflict as much damage as possible in the shortest amount of time. So the response has to be immediate, almost instinctive. That’s harder to accomplish if you haven’t thought about it in advance.”

An effective active-shooter response plan includes evacuation, shelter-in-place and reporting considerations, the officers noted. If you have an escape route, use it.

Leave your belongings behind and help others get out if possible. Avoid sudden gestures and keep your hands visible at all times so it’s clear to police that you don’t pose any sort of threat. Once you’re safely away from the danger, call 9-1-1 if the police have not already responded.

“We need as many details as you can remember – height, hair color, type of clothing, location and so on,” noted DACP Officer Michael Wheeler of the PERT. “After that, the key is to remain calm and remember that help is on the way. If you panic, it increases your chances of making a mistake and possibly becoming a target of the shooter.”

Post MPs Take Up Challenge in ‘Top Cop’

Two Soldiers from Fort Lee’s 217th Military Police Detachment are in the midst of battle during the 2011 Law Enforcement Top Cop Competition currently in process at Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

Pfc. Trevor Stringer and Sgt. Brett Sieberhaar, both military policemen, are representing the unit in the Soldier and noncommissioned officer categories, respectively.

The competition concludes Friday.

In its second year, Top Cop challenges competitors from throughout the Training and Doctrine Command to showcase their law enforcement and Soldier skills. Events include the obstacle course, stress fire/weapons qualification, respond to a medical

emergency and a written test.

Sgt. 1st Class Troy Wolverton, the 217th first sergeant, said both Soldiers are exceptional and the unit has history on its side.

“They have an outstanding chance (to win),” he said of the entrants. “We took the top Soldier last year, and we’re sending our best to compete this year.”

Stringer, who has one year in the Army, said he is thankful for the opportunity and implied that he aims to put Fort Lee on the map.

“I’m glad they chose me for it because it’s going to be a good experience for me,” said the 20-year-old from Brandon, Miss.

“I’m pretty confident that we can show them that Fort Lee should be taken seriously.”

Sieberhaar, a native of Charlotte, N.C., said the expectations are high and said he will

give it his best.

“I’m going to do everything I can; do everything I learned to make my leadership proud,” said the 29-year-old.

The two won’t be going at it alone. Sgt. Leeshawn Sanders, who competed last year in the NCO competition, will accompany the competitors as a mentor.

He said he learned that preparation is key, especially in the fitness department.

“There’s a 17-station obstacle course that they have to go through,” he said. “It’s mental and physical. That is the most challenging part. If you compete with all that, you’re going to come out on top.”

In addition to the individual awards, an award also will be presented to the best unit, based on the combined scores of the individual competitors.

Planning a car wash or bake sale to raise funds for your company’s organizational day?

Want to give back to the local community by collecting canned goods for the food bank?

Not so fast, advised Capt. Justin Price, administrative law attorney at Fort Lee’s legal office. Military community members should keep in mind that approval may be needed for any fundraising on the installation. “Don’t launch these initiatives on your own,� said Price. “Depending on the fundraising activity, you may need companylevel approval or even an OK by the garrison command group.�

Every situation is different though, said 1st Lt. Joseph Smith, another administrative law attorney. “It’s better to ask with each situation,� said Smith. “The who, what, where, when and how can be different – it’s very fact specific. There’s not a broad overarching answer to fundraising.�

Price agreed, and said “There are some general principles and rules we look at – Army Regulation 600-29, for instance – but the specific facts of a given situation are really going to dictate what should go down and what should not go down. They aren’t legal versus illegal – they are permissible versus impermissible.�

In every situation, ethics come into play, said Price. “We like to avoid the appearance of impropriety,� he said. “If we see any issue, even in a gray area, we’re going to try to steer them in a direction that avoids a bad appearance.�

There are general rules to fundraising, including avoiding solicitation from members outside of the organization, said Price. “If you are having a bake sale and someone buys a brownie, they should know that ‘my $2 is going toward that organization and my benefit is I get a brownie,’� he said. “However, you shouldn’t solicit money from individuals if it’s going to an organization or function from which they

won’t get any benefit. An elementary example would be an officers’ club soliciting from enlisted members when those individuals are not eligible to participate in the activity due to their rank. We summarize that rule by saying ‘for us, by us’ – so the fundraising by the group that is looking for the benefit should only be among the group members who can derive benefit from the donations.�

Something important to keep in mind on Fort Lee is the rule prohibiting solicitation among advanced individual training Soldiers and their families, if they are the targeted group. “For example, if you are having a bake sale at SCoE, an AIT Soldier may walk by and buy something, but it isn’t targeted at the AIT Soldier,� said Price. “If you have a bake sale in the middle of AIT companies, you’ll have an uphill battle if you try to argue that you aren’t targeting them when you are in the middle of their barracks.�

Fundraisers that compete against the Combined Federal Campaign and Army Emergency Relief are also something to avoid, Price said.

Another thing the administrative law office urges people to avoid is the appearance of sponsorship.

Recently, a community member reserved a room at the community center for an off-post organization and didn’t realize the activity required coordination through proper channels. It results in a last-minute change in location that caused frustration for the user. A lot of the cases the administrative law office gets are similar to that scenario, said Price. “Unfortunately, a role of our office is sometimes to put the toothpaste back into the tube after something has been messed up,� he said. “People are figuring out ‘how do we make this right?’ To someone off post, it could give an appearance of the military sponsoring an organization they shouldn’t be.�

Keeping in mind that the facts can change with every situation, it is wise to check the regulations first to see what is permissible when it comes to fundraising.

The new Integrated Disability Evaluation System at Fort Lee has accomplished its mission of streamlining the time it takes injured and ill Soldiers to receive their benefits. The IDES goal was to provide a seamless and transparent disability evaluation system administered jointly by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs to make disability evaluations for wounded, ill or injured service members and veterans, simple, seamless, fast and fair.

The Fort Lee IDES integrates the evaluation processes that the DoD and VA performed separately in order to help the DoD determine whether a wounded, ill or injured service member is able to continue to serve; if so, the system quickly returns the Soldier to duty. For service members unable to continue service, the IDES determines the disability rating the member will receive through the VA. “In this new system, the time for a Soldier to receive VA benefits is significantly reduced; my particular case has been moving along much quicker,� said Spc. Michael Nowitcky, an enrollee.

The IDES partnership program began at Fort Lee on March 31 and now has 42 cases. “The IDES system was developed to shorten the 540 days it took a Soldier to process through the Army’s system and then process through the VA system. Now it takes approximately 295 days,� said Capt. Beverly VanTull, chief, Patient Administration for Kenner Army Health Clinic. “The function of the new IDES system include a single set of disability medical examinations to determine both fitness and disability and ultimately render one comprehensive benefits rating provided by the VA.� “The VA portion of the IDES process allowed me to feel like I fit in and that I am part of a team again,� said Spc. Jennifer Miller. “I haven’t felt that way in some time.� “When Soldiers are injured, the Army provides medical treatment to make them better,� said VanTull. “If their injury or illness cannot get better and falls below the Army retention standard, then they are processed through the new IDES disability system.� “Soldiers at Fort Lee benefit from the new IDES Program because it’s a lot quicker for them to receive their VA benefits check,� said Spc. Trevor Elliott. “In my case,

the VA found more than what was mentioned in my VA claim. This program is works by ensuring service members get all the benefits they are entitled.� “Another benefit of the program is the ability to view your claim on the VA website or via AKO under ‘My Medical Evaluation Board,’� Elliott continued.

When asked if there were any recommendations on improvements to the program, several service members mentioned adding another MEB physician and Physical Evaluation board liaison officer to the Kenner team. “As the Army enforces the guidance to reduce the number of medical non-deployable Soldiers, the IDES program will grow, resulting in the need for an expanded IDES staff, if the program is to remain successful,� said Nowitcky.

Another suggestion to improve the process is to have the VA behavioral health evaluation mirror the DoD process.

By standardizing both, Soldiers would know what to expect and the entire process would be streamlined. “We are here to care for and do the right thing for our Soldiers,� said Van Tull. “All of the steps in IDES are dictated by law. All of the steps must happen to make sure Soldiers receive the benefits they deserve.�

49th Adds Fun to Fitness Routine A healthy dose of friendly competition combined with the can-do spirit of Army warriors turned the Aug. 1 physical training session for the 49th Quartermaster Group into a lively sporting event at Williams Stadium.

Col. Rodney D. Fogg, 49th QM Group commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Romeo Montez, group CSM, planned the event that included a litter run, pictured right, and a water jug relay, pictured below. Headquarters Company won the trophy and commander’s paddle after a command team run and a tug-of-war to decide first place among the top four units. “It is a great and fun day to be a 49er,” said Montez. “We should have this event at least every quarter to show our camaraderie and morale.”

Customers who want to enjoy enormous savings and the ability to customize their own shopping experience in the process cannot afford to miss the Fort Lee Commissary case lot sale, set for Sept. 16-18, said Joseph H. Soldiers, Cadre Do Double-Take in QM Company

When identical twins Privates 1st Class Jeremy and Joshua Nixon arrived at Victor Company for their Petroleum Supply Specialist Course in July, both cadre and Soldiers did a double take.

The twins were born Aug. 4, 1992, in Evansville, Ind., but prior to enlisting they lived with one of their sisters and brotherin-law in a town called Santa Claus. They have three older sisters and an older brother who is serving with the Marine Corps.

Before they enlisted, the Nixon twins attended school together. Jeremy was first interested in the idea of enlisting in the Army when he was in his junior year of high school.

Jeremy said it took him a long time to convince his brother to enlist because he had no plans of having a military career, but to continue his studies.

After researching with Jeremy and talking to recruiters to see what they could offer them, the twins learned about the “Buddy Program.” This is a program that allows friends or family members to be in the same platoon during basic training. If

they chose the same military occupational specialty, they also would be together during advanced individual training.

After AIT, “buddies” are assigned to the same duty station, and then the program stops. They also learned about other programs that the Army offers, including bonds and tuition assistance for college which is important for them, especially Joshua, who is more interested in continuing his studies.

After learning about all of these benefits, Joshua changed his way of thinking, and they decided to enlist as reservists in the Army. They found a lot of comfort in the fact that they could join the Army together and share the same MOS. They also liked the idea that they would be together throughout basic training because they would be able to support each other through rough times and never let the other one quit.

Both chose to be petroleum supply specialists. They joined the U.S. Army Nov. 11, 2009, using the “Buddy Program” option and on June 1, 2010, the Nixon twins left for Fort Benning, Ga. for basic training. Together, they made it through several grueling weeks of training.

They are originally from Evansville, Ind. “Going through the training together has brought us even closer than we were before,” said Jeremy.

After their basic training, they returned home. The brothers arrived in July to complete AIT at Fort Lee.

After AIT they will return to college to finish their studies. Jeremy wants to major in criminal justice and Joshua wants to pursue nursing. They want to stay in the Reserves and get jobs after finishing with their studies.

Retroactive Coverage Closing for TRICARE Young Adult FALLS CHURCH – The opportunity to purchase retroactive TRICARE Young Adult coverage expires on Sept.

30. Retroactive TYA can be backdated to Jan 1, or the day young adults became eligible if that was after Jan 1.

TYA allows eligible adult children to purchase TRICARE coverage after their eligibility for “regular” TRICARE coverage ends at age 21 (or 23 if enrolled in a full course of study at an approved institution of higher learning).

TYA-eligible beneficiaries may choose to purchase retroactive coverage if they’ve had significant health care expenses that weren’t covered by other insurance. Once enrolled in TYA, beneficiaries may file a claim for reimbursement of costs for covered care. Additionally, young adults in the Continued Health Care Benefit Program may elect to purchase retroactive TYA coverage and receive a refund for their CHCPB fees.

Those interested in purchasing retroactive TYA coverage must ensure their application form is received by the regional or overseas health care contractor by Sept.

30. All premiums – both retroactive and the initial three-

month payment – must be submitted with the application. The application and payment can be dropped off at a TRICARE Service Center, or mailed or faxed to the regional or overseas health care contractor.

To be reimbursed for covered services, receipts for care must be included when a claim is filed.

TYA launched in May, and has shown a steady increase in enrollment numbers. As of July 31, almost 7,700 young adults have purchased TYA, which currently offers TRICARE Standard coverage for $186 a month. To qualify for TYA, uniformed services dependents must be under 26, unmarried and not eligible for their own employersponsored health care coverage.

A premium-based TRICARE Prime benefit is scheduled to be available later in 2011.

Before choosing to purchase TYA, beneficiaries should carefully consider all of their health care coverage options and balance all the costs. Complete information and application forms are available at www.tricare.mil/tya.

This summer has seen some of the largest crowds yet prompting Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation to open up the skeet shooting range for parking. With just two concerts remaining in the series, time is running out to see some of the most entertaining bands the Richmond area has to offer.

Friday Live at Five kicks off at 5 p.m. with a deejay. From 6-9 p.m., a live band takes over the outdoor stage providing a fun atmosphere for adults and kids to enjoy.

Tomorrowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s concert features the Hip Pocket Band â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a party ensemble that has been compared to the Band of Oz and The Rhondels. A Fort Lee favorite, Casper, is back on Aug. 26 to close out the summer concert series. Casper has an amazing musical repertoire covering Motown, rock, funk, swing and country.

The fun doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t end when the concert stops. Karaoke starts up inside the Hideaway at 9 p.m. and continues until closing time.

Pedestrians, Public Should Stay Clear of Construction Sites

Construction sites require a rigorous amount of care and vigilance from workers in terms of health and safety. Many accidents and even some fatalities happen to workers each year that could have been avoided through proper application and awareness of on-site safety procedures.

Many construction sites are within close proximity to areas where the public operates, requiring rules and safety procedures that are equally as vital to the public as for the construction workers on-site.

Some of the hazardous elements for pedestrians on construction sites are construction cranes carrying heavy loads, uneven surfaces, falling objects, collapses, heavy machinery and hazardous substances.

Every piece of machinery and equipment used on a construction site has specific instructions regarding set-up and maintenance, not only for the safety of the people working on the construction site but also for the public. When equipment is used and maintained properly, workers and the public will

Pedestrians should always exercise caution when in the vicinity of construction sites; however, the first step toward construction safety for pedestrians should be making the public aware of danger.

Construction sites are normally fenced off and marked with signage so there is no mistaking the area of possible danger. Even the perimeter and entrance of a site may be hazardous. At entrances to sites, a sign should be displayed indicating that the area after the entrance is a hard hat area, requiring the use of a safety construction hat at all times. If hazards are kept inside a fenced location, pedestrians should remain safe.

Common sense can save lives if pedestrians are aware of danger; common sense will generally keep most of the public out of harm’s way. Do not walk through a construction site just because it is a shorter distance to your destination.

There are instances when carrying out construction work in very public areas cannot be avoided. Some areas cannot be cordoned off, such as freeways.

Mortuary Troops Tackle Difficult Mission

BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan – The first call came early in the morning on Aug. 6, and the news was grim – 38 U.S. and Afghan troops were killed by insurgents who shot down their CH-47 Chinook helicopter.

Sgt. 1st Class Mary Perez said she doesn’t remember getting much sleep from that moment on.

She, along with other senior leaders from the 101st Sustainment Brigade and the 101st Special Troops Battalion, rolled up their sleeves and headed to the Bagram Air Field Mortuary Affairs Collection Point where they were tasked to provide support in preparation for the eventual ramp ceremony.

“You’re tasked out to do it, and it’s your job. But to do something like that, it’s just … different,” said Perez, a brigade military intelligence non-commissioned officer in charge. “It’s not just a tasking anymore. It’s something personal. It’s a tasking, that as a Soldier, no matter who you are or what rank you wear on your chest, you execute, and you execute to your fullest capability.”

The members of the special operations mission – which included 22 Navy SEALS, three U.S. Air Force Airmen, four U.S. Army air crew members and a K-9

unit dog – died after their helicopter was apparently shot down last week as they were flying in to help Army Rangers who were going after insurgents on the ground.

Eight Afghan commandos and an Afghan interpreter were also on board the downed aircraft.

The Department of Defense has ordered an investigation into the incident. According to official reports, the deaths are the highest number of U.S. forces killed during a single event in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The Mortuary Affairs Collection Point at Bagram is tasked with the retrieval, tentative identification, transportation and burial of deceased American and allied personnel. The brigade’s special troops battalion provides staff supervision at the site, which is operated by the 54th Quartermaster Company, based out of Fort Lee. The senior leaders from the brigade and battalion assigned to the detail are not specifically trained as mortuary affairs specialists. They helped with recovering and transporting the remains from the flight line, getting additional transfer cases, ironing the flags, and cleaning the MACP site.

The transition from military to civilian life is always difficult, but veterans with disabilities may face additional challenges. It is important to stay informed about the many programs and services available when making that transition.

For veterans with disabilities in Virginia, finding accessible housing that will cater to their individual needs can pose many obstacles. That is why information about housing rights and housing resources in Virginia can help veterans with disabilities live independent and self-directed lives.

The purpose of the Virginia Fair Housing Law is to ensure â&#x20AC;&#x153;Equal Opportunity for All.â&#x20AC;? Established in 1972 and enacted by the General Assembly, the law was similar to the Fair Housing Law Congress established under the Civil Rights Act of 1968.

Since that time, Virginiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s law has been amended to add protected classes. Today, Virginia law prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age over the age of 55, familial status and handicap.

As a veteran with a disability in search of housing, there are prohibited practices under the Virginia Fair Housing Law that can protect you from being discriminated against.

For instance, being refused by a landlord the right to rent or buy a home is prohibited under Fair Housing. To have different conditions or terms set up when attempting to rent or buy a home is not allowed. To be denied the right to negotiate for housing or told that a dwelling is not available when it is available is illegal. To be denied access to memberships, organizations, facilities or services related to the sale or renting of a dwelling because of a disability is also a prohibited practice.

If you think your rights have been violated, you may file a complaint at

the Virginia Fair Housing office at 9960 Mayland Drive, Suite 400, Richmond, VA 23233-1463. The email address is fairhousing@dpor.virginia.gov. You have up to one year after the alleged incident occurred or ended to file a complaint.

PREPARE — FROM PAGE 3 If you can’t evacuate from the area, the next best option is to hide in a place where the shooter is not likely to find you (a.k.a. “shelter in place”). The location should be a room with lockable doors and windows. Access points also can be blocked with desks, file cabinets and other furniture. Turn off lights, close the blinds, silence cell phones and radios, and get out of sight. Do not respond to any voice commands unless you are absolutely certain it is someone who can assist you.

“As long as you’re safe, stay there,” said Sims. “Our primary objective is the shooter; we have to neutralize the threat before any further harm is done. Usually, that also means we’re walking past victims without stopping to assist them, so anyone who can safely render first aid during these situations should certainly do so.”

The unpredictability of an active shooter situation is also a reality victims and PERT members must face, according to DACP Officer Larry Mawhinney. Does the assailant plan to kill everyone in sight or select individuals who caused the pain that motivated the attack? Is the shooter suicidal? The variables are many and the aggressive act is usually considered a last resort to mitigate an overwhelming hardship.

“Which brings us back to the reporting aspect,” Mawhinney said. “Somewhere along the way, that individual probably said or did something that indicated a problem. And we have to consider today’s operational environment in which behavioral health issues are increasing and family troubles may be greater because of separation or the economy. We need to keep educating ourselves on these issues and not be afraid to speak up when someone is struggling and exhibits irrational or potentially dangerous behavior.”

Body: This segment is a combination of nutrition and fitness. Research shows that our choice of food and our decision to exercise regularly not only impact us physically but also have a real impact on our moods. Preventing Fires While Away on Vacation Planning any sort of vacation that involves travel can be hectic. Amid the worries of packing the right clothes, choosing the best itinerary and finding someone to take care of the dog while you’re away, it’s not unusual for lesser things to be overlooked and, typically, the last thoughts as you’re running out the door include the question, “did I remember to check the stove and unplug the coffee pot?”

Unfortunately, the result of poor safety planning during vacation time can be horrific. Every year, families have lost their home while they were away enjoying themselves, and the cause may have been something as basic as an appliance overheating or a wire located too close to flammable material.

If you’re planning a trip, always take the time for a thorough home walk-through and pay attention to the following areas: • The kitchen. Check stoves, coffee pots, toasters and hot plates that could easily cause a fire if they’re not turned off and unplugged.

• Youth bedrooms. In their excitement to begin an adventure, kids often forget to turn off computers, music devices, etc.

• Emergency access. Provide a key to a reliable neighbor in case something happens and the police or fire department needs access to your house. Always leave your travel and contact information with someone trustworthy as well.

Fire safety planning is necessary on the destination end of your vacation as well.

Consider a basic camping trip. Did you think about the material when obtaining tents and sleeping bags? Many are made from cotton, a flammable substance. Sometimes the fabric treatment used to make tents waterproof increases the flammability, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Also remember that “flame retardant” doesn’t mean fire-proof. A flying ember from a campfire can land on the tent and ignite it in seconds.

At 37 years old with18 years of military service under her belt, she’s putting it all on the line for a chance to win a spot on the All Army Women’s Softball Team. The trial camp gets underway Wednesday at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa. “Anything’s possible,” said the Wilmington, N.C. native assigned to Bravo Company-Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 59th Ordnance Brigade.

“With a lot of prayer and my confidence,” she said.

Prentice, who has played intramural ball most of her military career, gained that confidence six years ago when her play garnered admiration from an unlikely source.

“Another coach suggested I try out for the team,” said Prentice. “He suggested to my coach that I put in an application packet at the time.”

Boosted by the recommendation, Prentice went about pursuing a place on the roster but injuries and deployments kept her from taking further steps. She has been injury-free the last couple of years and being assigned to the Ordnance School has kept her from deployments. The time is right, she said.

“It’s something I want to do,” said Prentice. “If I don’t make it, just having opportunity to compete, of being selected to attend the camp, is good enough for me.”

Prentice will bring a big bat and good base-running speed to the trials. As a member of the post team during the past spring and summer, she said she averaged about .800, the result of working with two former All Army players over the past two months. Eddie Parker, Fort Lee’s recreational supervisory specialist and a former All Army player and coach, said

he witnessed the improvement firsthand.

“Nikki has a lot of potential,” he said.

Potential aside, Parker also said that earning a spot on the team won’t come easy, and Prentice is likely to face a grueling test of stamina in doing so.

“The key to making the team is performing while you’re tired,” he said. “They practice three times a day, and the temperatures range from 90-93 degrees. You get tired, so you’ve got to have good stamina.”

On top of that, Parker said, she will have to beat out the veterans, many of whom are returning from the 2010 team that earned the Armed Forces title.

Still, he said Prentice has a chance to beat them out.

“There’s always that possibility,” said Parker.

Prentice said she’s ready for the experience and mature enough to accept the results, however it turns out.

“It’s a great opportunity, and I’m looking forward to the challenge,” she said.

The trial camp concludes Sept. 16. Those who make the team will represent the Army in the Armed Forces softball tourney scheduled Sept. 17-22 at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla.

Basketball is not in season, but that didn’t stop about 60 community youngsters from indulging themselves in a daily dose of jumpshots, lay-ups and suicide drills at the Post Field House.

The kids, aged 8-18, were participants in the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Combined Arms Support Command Basketball Camp that began Monday.

Sgt. 1st Class Joe Stroman, camp director, said the camp was organized to teach participants a “very basic knowledge of baskeball” in a supportive, positive enviroment.

He said the camp attendees responded in kind.

“The kids are elated,” he said. “They are having a ball.”

Stroman, a Reservist who has participated in camps directed by former coach Dean Smith, said he gets satisfaction in seeing the progress kids make during the course of the camp.

“It’s rewarding to see the kids come in as individuals, some of them not knowing one another, and leaving as a team,” he said. “They leave knowing the team concept.”

The camp concludes Friday and benefits the HHC, CASCOM Family Readiness Group.

Historic Area Churches Offer Sights, Sounds

Hear a stirring speech that helped move English colonies to rebellion. Visit the nation’s oldest African-American Baptist church. Marvel at the rich colors of stained glass windows crafted by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Where are these wonders? They are in Fort Lee’s extended neighborhood.

Professional actors reenact the Second Virginia Convention of March 1775 on summer Sundays and other selected days at St. John’s Church in Richmond (2319 E. Broad St.). Ten delegates, portrayed by actors and including Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, gather in the church where the convention was held, and Henry delivers his rousing “Give me liberty or give me death!” speech.

Admission to the 45-minute program is free but voluntary donations are collected at the end of the performance. Tickets are distributed beginning at 1 p.m. on a first-come, first served basis. A program of patriotic music, performed on a rare Adam Stein organ, begins at 1:30 with the reenactment starting at 2 p.m.

St. John’s Church is open year-round for tours Monday - Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., and Sunday, 1-4 p.m., except on major holidays. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for senior citizens and $5 for students. It is the first church built in Richmond and was completed in 1741. Designated a National Historic Landmark, St. John’s has Richmond’s first public cemetery.

Among prominent people buried there are Chief Justice John Marshall; George Wythe, signer of the Declaration of Independence; Virginia governors John Page and James Wood; and Elizabeth Arnold Poe, mother of Edgar Allan Poe. A number of Virginia places of worship have Tiffany windows. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts offers a statewide driving tour of the sites at www.vmfa.state.va.us.

First Baptist Church of Petersburg, the oldest AfricanAmerican Baptist church in the U.S., had its humble beginnings in Prince George County when a group of African-Americans known as the New Lights gathered to worship as early as 1756. Scattered members of New Lights were united in 1774 in a church in Petersburg. The purpose of eArmyU â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an online degree program that began in 2001 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; was to provide Soldiers access to a college education, and officials said the need for that program has been overshadowed by other booming distance-learning resources.

Since World War II, and in the years leading up to 2001 when eArmyU became a Soldierâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s entry point to higher education and personal growth, the only courses available were those offered at the time in the on-post brick-and-mortar classrooms. Obtaining a degree, with the constant movement a Soldier experiences, was very difficult. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Back in 2001 the world was changing.

Technology was becoming much more prevalent and distance learning came in,â&#x20AC;? said Ileen Rogers, director of Army Continuing Education at Human Resources Command, Fort Knox, Ky. Accessing instruction via the Internet, she said, was becoming a viable means of getting an education.

The Army decided to take advantage of this by initiating eArmyU and giving Soldiers the tools they needed to continue their education and not be confined by the traditional brick-and-mortar classroom to do it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But a laptop was an expensive piece of equipment, so at the onset of the program, Soldiers lined up to receive a free laptop and a liberal education assistance package. As long as they completed enough course work in eArmyU they were allowed to keep it,â&#x20AC;?

Rogers said about the laptop computers.

Colleges had to work hard to be part of the Armyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s program. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When the program started, there were about 23 colleges. Over the years, it has grown to include 45 colleges. But to be in the program, the college had to be regionally accredited and be a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity College,â&#x20AC;?

Rogers said.

SOC was created in 1972 to provide educational opportunities to service members who, because they frequently moved from

place to place, had trouble completing college degrees. Funded by the Department of Defense through a contract with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the contract is managed for Department of Defense by the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Before 2001, distance learning was insignificant,â&#x20AC;? Rogers said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Today, more than 72 percent of all our enrollments are in distance learning. The original concept was to expand access. We have. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Instead of 45 schools, Soldiers now have more than 2,000 choices out there. So, their options for selecting a home college, transferability and degree completion has just expanded beyond the original concept of eArmyU,â&#x20AC;? Rogers continued.

In spite of the current optempo, she said, enrollment in college programs has increased every year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Right now, at GoArmyEd.com, our Soldiers enroll in 2,600 colleges across the nation and around the world,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Technology has driven our access so that Soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, Africa, no matter where they are, they are online, they're doing distance learning through all kinds of modes, not just the Internet,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Schools, she said, have stepped forward to provide pre-loaded courses on PDAs, tablets and other devices. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our schools are out there pushing distance learning and access, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re struggling to keep up with it. Every time you turn around, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s some new media out there where Soldiers can access and continue their education,â&#x20AC;? Rogers said.

Tuition Assistance, she said, will continue because the Army is committed to Soldiers and their personal and professional growth. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want our Soldiers to know that eArmyU has been a success. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve achieved our major goals in providing access for our Soldiers. They can be assured that no matter where they go on their mission, the core ingredient for their personal growth is still there and the Army will do all it can to support them in that,â&#x20AC;? she said.

MISSION — FROM PAGE 15 They also took part in the ramp ceremony, acting as pallbearers and carrying the transfer cases of the deceased to the special operations forces units to load onto the planes heading back to the U.S. “They provided the logistical support we needed, like the vehicles for transport and additional cases as we needed,” said Sgt. 1st Class Alessa Jose, Bagram MACP non-commissioned officer in charge, 54th QM Co. “They also made sure we had additional refrigeration units for the fallen.”

Jose said her team normally receives between one and two remains a day to process, and they handle all aspects of the preparation. She said her team received the crash remains on the morning of Aug. 7 and was able to process and prepare all of the remains by Aug. 8.

“Their (Lifeliners) support was critical because of the time involved,” she said. “If it were just us doing this, the processing would have taken longer.”

Brigade medical operations officer Maj. Dierdre Lockhart was part of the truck team detail for loading and unloading the deceased SOF team members and said the Lifeliners’ involvement illustrated their willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty.

“It definitely showed we were willing to pick up the ball and run with it when we were needed,” she said.

The brigade conducted Leadership Professional Development training on mortuary affairs this past March, where they were introduced to how fallen heroes are identified and processed in preparation to be sent home.

But even attending that training did not prepare the senior leaders for being active participants in an actual event.

Perez said she and other senior leaders in the brigade received a call to go to the MACP but were unsure what their duty was going to be. As time went on, they started to figure it out, she said.

She and two other officers were also assigned to a truck team that loaded and unloaded the remains. It was the first time she’s ever been involved with something like this, she said.

“You come there to do a mission and then the reality hits you: all you could see, smell and feel was death,” she said. “And you have to maintain composure.”

Perez said she noticed the Navy SEALs carrying their fallen teammates to the trucks. “I mean, these guys are tough, they’re in it, they’re the ones kicking in doors, but I’ve never seen them look more vulnerable,” she said.

“They’re not just machines. It brings light to the fact that we’re all in this fight together.”

The decision to use brigade and battalion senior ranking leadership to assist the MACP unit was not lost on Perez, she said.

“You don’t want to expose your junior Soldiers to that.

It’s emotional and disheartening when you’re in this fight to see mass amounts of casualties like that. There were majors ironing the flags and mopping the floors in the MACP, not because it was a task, but because it was the right thing to do,” she said.

Three-Peat for PWD Life Liners

PWD was on the hunt for its third Intramural Softball Championship in as many years. But it would prove to be a tougher test this year as a loss in the third round of the post season to HHC 59TH (Ordnance) put the team in the loser’s bracket early. HHC 59TH went on to lose against Garrison for the right to play for the championship. PWD put itself into a bind as now it would take five games to be crowned champion a third time in a row.

The Life Liners were up to the test knocking off the USMC detachment 14-5 then defeating Kenner 12-0 en route to a rematch with HHC 59th. The winner would face Garrison in the championship game. Neither team scored in the first inning, but the 59th struck first plating four runs in the second inning. PWD answered right away in the second inning with two runs cutting the lead in half. They gained the lead in the third inning and never relinquished it. PWD advanced to the championship game with a 7-5 victory, eliminating newcomer HHC 59th.

With PWD’s defeat of the 59th, the team was looking to play spoiler to Garrison’s title hopes. The Life Liners took an early 1-0 advantage as Derrick Smith singled in Brandon Barger. PWD added two runs in the second and one more in the third inning, holding a 4-0 lead after three innings. Garrison broke its scoring drought when Brian Michaels belted a double, scoring Ronnie Sims and Reynaldo Albizu. Garrison evened the score (4-4) in the sixth inning scoring two more runs. PWD answered in a big way with a leadoff triple by Barger. His hit sparked a four-run inning, giving the team a 7-3 lead; only needing to record three outs to force an “if” game.

Garrison scored three runs on two outs with a chance to tie the game. Down to the last out, the team had the winning run at the plate with the tying run on second base. A shallow fly ball was hit to left field to record the last out.

This gave momentum to PWD, going into the “if” game

In the “if” game both teams struggled offensively early after each scored one run in the first inning. Neither scored again until PWD broke through when an error caused James Rivera to reach base and Anthony Williams scored from third base. Garrison failed to capitalize on the fielding errors made by PWD. That proved to be costly in the sixth. The first two batters reached on PWD errors in the sixth and were left stranded on base. In the bottom of the

inning, PWD scored four runs on an inside the park grand slam by J.R. Brown, taking the wind out of Garrison’s sails. Trailing 6-1, Garrison would claw back, scoring two runs but it wouldn’t be enough as PWD cemented another Intramural Softball Championship.

The recipient of the 2011 Sportsmanship Award was the 111th. This award goes to the team that displays exemplary sportsmanship, honor and pride on the playing field. Win, lose or draw – the 111th team members carried themselves with the utmost respect and dignity.

Community Cleanup Thirty-five Soldiers from the Ordnance Basic Officer Leader Course 11-011 worked with the Friends of Lower Appomattox River Aug. 6 during a community service project.
