There has been much debate about the role that soy-based foods play in the dietary management of elevated cholesterol levels.

Different studies show somewhat varied results based on what type of food or beverage was studied and how much was consumed, and what component of the soy food (protein and/or isoflavone) was tested.

Generally, a modest effect has been shown in lowering LDL cholesterol with requirement of at least a few servings daily of a soy product, with greater effect shown

in persons with higher cholesterol levels.

Achieving that level of intake can be relatively easy when you make a smoothie for breakfast with frozen fruit and soy milk or silken tofu, or have a soy-based sausage patty. You could enjoy a soy-based burger, sandwich patty or tofu-based dish for lunch or dinner. Roasted soy nuts could be part of a healthy trail mix with other nuts and dried fruit. And don’t forget about edamame beans, the boiled fresh soy bean that can be enjoyed as a snack, in a salad, or as a recipe ingredient.

Many training cups, also called sippy or tippy cups, are available in stores. Many are “no spill” cups, which are essentially baby bottles in disguise. “No spill” cups include a valve beneath the spout to stop spills. However, cups with valves do not allow your child to sip. Instead the child gets liquid by sucking on the cup, much like a baby bottle.

This practice defeats the purpose of using a training cup, as it prevents the child from learning to sip.

In addition to naturally occurring soluble fiber in food, another potent soluble fiber source is psyllium husk fiber. There are no specific recommendations for intake of soluble fiber, but it is likely that you will achieve a healthy intake if you are sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

One thing to remember as you increase your consumption of fiber-containing foods: do it gradually and be sure to drink plenty of fluids. This will help to prevent any gastrointestinal discomfort.

There are two types of dietary fiber, insoluble and soluble, and soluble fiber is thought to play an important role in improving cholesterol levels by affecting how dietary fat and cholesterol are digested and metabolized. Slowing these processes can positively influence how cholesterol is produced in the body and accumulate in the bloodstream.

According to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the average American falls far short of the daily recommended goal for total fiber intake which is 14 grams per 1,000 calories consumed to maintain a healthy weight. Most foods that contain fiber have some of both types, so it is important to know which foods are particularly good sources of soluble fiber if you are trying to lower your cholesterol level.

FORT PICKETT – Under various circumstances and especially in combat environments, U.S. military helicopters are required to land and refuel without cutting the engine.

The procedure, called “hot refueling,” poses dangers to the crew and support personnel due to static electricity and fuel sensitivity.

Soldiers of the 108th Quartermaster Company were exposed to those dangers many times last week when they performed more than 50 hot refuels during the Southbound Trooper exercise held at Fort Pickett Feb. 17-23.

Capt. Milena Williams, commander of the petroleum supply element, said the event allowed unit Soldiers to train on collective

tasks, sharpen individual skills and provide exposure to refueling procedures that are sometimes hard to come by.

“The Soldiers performed outstanding because they trained the whole time with the (limited) resources we have at Fort Lee,” she said. “We don’t have aircraft, so you train with what you’ve got.”

Southbound Trooper, version XIII, is an annual joint exercise involving more than 600 U.S. Soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Canadian army forces in an effort to further develop interoperability capabilities and strengthen bonds.

For the exercise, more than 80 108th Soldiers convoyed 50 miles to Fort Pickett to set up a Forward Area Refueling Point, dining facility and other support operations. A large number of its personnel supported the FARP, an operation de-

signed to fulfill petroleum requirements on the battlefield.

Twenty-year-old Pfc. Eric Snider and 21-year-old Pfc. Carl Hayes were among the many Soldiers who took turns refueling aircraft at the FARP located at Fort Pickett’s Blackstone Army Airfield.

In one instance, the two, under the watchful eye of senior Soldiers, refueled a Navy UH-60 Seahawk on Feb. 21. Snider said refueling operative aircraft is unlike anything else in the military occupational specialty designated as 92F. “It’s an adrenaline rush,” said the hot refuel first-timer Snider, yelling over the whooping sounds of rotor blades in the background..

“You’re trying to keep yourself safe and at the same time keep the aircrew safe so that they can per-

form their mission.”

The biggest concerns with hot refueling are fuel stability and static electricity, said Spc. Robert Maddox, a former aircraft crew chief and senior petroleum supply specialist.

“Aircraft are very sensitive,” said the eight-year Soldier. “The fuel has to be very clean. These guys have to do a lot of work on keeping the fuel up to standard.

“They have to be careful with what they wear as well,” he continued. “A lot of the clothing, especially garments that keep you warm, can’t be worn because it produces a lot of static and static, fuel and helicopters are three things that don’t go well together. It’s a very dangerous procedure.

Hayes, who has participated in a FARP once before but is still an inexperienced Soldier, has a suf-

ficient degree of indoctrination to fully understand the criticality of safety measures during hot refueling.

“One thing a 92-Fox doesn’t want is for a bird to go down because it automatically comes back to us,” he said.

Safety aside, Southbound Trooper afforded Soldiers an indepth and sustained opportunity to train. Various rotary wing aircraft provided a good workout for 50 or more Soldiers, said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Vaughn Mosley, who headed the FARP operation.

“We had on average five to 10 hot refuels a day,” he said.

There were some challenges as well, added Mosely, “primarily because we weren’t utilizing the best equipment that we normally utilize on a mission like this. What the Soldiers did was comprise two different systems to make this mission happen. So, it took a little ingenuity

For Soldiers and their families relocating to Fort Lee, there’s no need to worry while awaiting delivery of household items – Army Community Service Relocation Readiness is available to help.

At its annual open house on Monday, approximately 30 commanders, sergeants major and first sergeants took advantage of the morning event to learn more about the myriad of offerings of ACS, including its invaluable Lending Closet.

“We want everyone who relocates here to know we have a large supply of household items available to loan,” said Linda Harvey, Relocation Readiness program manager.

“We don’t want them to have to go buy brand new items.”

Depending on the needs, the Lending Closet can provide dishes, bowls, glasses, cooking utensils, pots and pans, and many other necessary items. In addition, there are ironing boards, toasters, blenders, coffee makers, vacuum cleaners and other appliances as well as booster seats, car seats, strollers, play pens and high chairs. If you need an air mattress, futon, folding table or a cot, ACS can loan these as well. All items are high quality, Harvey emphasized.

ACS will provide Lending Closet items for 30 days and an extension is pos-

sible for 30 additional days for many items.

“Sometimes as we know, there are delays on the arrival of household items,” Harvey said.

“It’s good to know what’s available and remind ourselves – sometimes we forget.

This is a great service,” said Capt. Dallas Ketchum, commander, Mike Company 244th Quartermaster Battalion, 23rd QM Brigade. Ketchum said he took advantage of Lending Closets at Fort Riley, Kan., and Fort Sam Houston, Texas. “I want my cadre to share this information.”

“It’s important to get this information for my staff so they know what’s available at ACS,” said Capt. Taneshia Warren, commander of Alpha Company, 16th Ordnance Battalion, 59th Ord. Bde. Harvey said on the average ACS receives about 125 requests during busy months.

“We are prepared for the gates to open now as the leaders spread the word. I was most impressed at how excited the Soldiers, family members and civilian guests were to be here,” she said.

The senior leaders also visited many offices to obtain information about other services offered by ACS. These include advocacy programs, exceptional family member programs, story and play mornings, family team building, financial readiness and much more The Army Community Service Relocation Readiness Office is located at building 9023 on Mahone Avenue.

The Fort Lee Area Spouses’ Club will host a fashion show luncheon, March 19, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., at the Lee Club. The event will feature post military personnel and family members modeling clothing items that are available at the Fort Lee Thrift Shop, one of FLASC’s fundraising activities. AER Kick-off, Town Hall The Fort Lee community is invited to a Feb. 28 Army Emergency Relief Campaign kick-off and Installation Town Hall event at Lee Theater on Mahone Avenue, starting at 2 p.m.

WASHINGTON – Childcare and family support programs will be reduced under sequestration, the Army’s chief of staff told members of Congress Tuesday.

“We don’t want to reduce them, but we have no choice,” Gen. Raymond T. Odierno told lawmakers on Capitol Hill. The general and the other service chiefs testified before the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee during an oversight hearing to examine fiscal challenges to the military.

If sequestration is triggered March 1, the Army will have a shortfall of $18 billion in its operation and maintenance accounts this year, Odierno said.

The sequestration will necessitate reduced hours at post childcare centers, he said. Spouse employment programs will be reduced, and even healthcare programs, in some cases, will be affected.

“On our installations, ci-

vilian furloughs, a 70 percent reduction in base sustainment funding and an elimination of contracts will strain our ability to protect our Army family programs,” Odierno said.

“If sequestration is implemented, we’ll be forced to reduce funding for our schools, our daycare centers, family assistance and community service programs, family and substance-abuse counselors and tuition assistance for our Soldiers.”

The general said the Army is prioritizing programs and trying to determine which ones are the most important for families.

“We’re trying to sustain the most critical ones,” Odierno said. “But even if we sustain them, we’re going to have to reduce some of the capability within those programs.”

Soldiers deployed in Afghanistan and elsewhere expect their families to be taken care of, the general said.

“We talk a lot about keeping faith with our Soldiers,” he said, adding that service members will do anything asked by the nation and de-

ploy on short notice. “The one thing they want us to do is take care of their families.”

Degraded access to medical care may also take place under sequestration, Odierno said. The number of mental healthcare providers will decrease instead of going up, he said. The Army has been attempting to increase providers over the past few years to help treat brain injuries and post-traumatic stress.

“Before sequestration, we allocated the dollars and positions to increase military and civilian mental health providers,” Odierno said.

“The problem is there are not enough out there. Now what’s going to happen is we’re going to have to reduce the number we already have.”

Annual dental checkups and annual physicals for reserve-component Soldiers will be in jeopardy, said Gen. Frank J. Grass, chief of the National Guard Bureau.

Contracts that provide those services now will be lost under sequestration, he said.

Sequestration will set the National Guard back when it comes to dealing with “com-

plex disasters” such as severe earthquakes, Grass told members of Congress. He said the Guard has been working with U.S. Northern Command and other agencies to improve its response capabilities to natural disasters, but that will suffer steps backward under sequestration.

The National Guard will face a backlog in military schooling for its Soldiers, Grass testified. It will face maintenance issues on equipment as its dual-status military technicians are furloughed. And readiness will suffer due to curtailed training.

Training under sequestration will be curtailed for about 80 percent of the Army’s ground force, Odierno told lawmakers. He said this will eventually have dire effects on readiness.

“We simply do not know when we will be asked to deploy Soldiers to fight again,” he said. “But history is very clear on this subject. We will ask them to deploy.”

If they are not trained and ready when that happens, Odierno said, lives will be lost. Likewise, if they don’t have the proper equipment, he said the cost will be American lives.

Sequestration will result in delays to every one of the Army’s 10 modernization

programs, Odierno testified.

“I began my career in the 70s in a hollow Army,” Odierno said at the beginning of his testimony. “I am determined that I will not end my career in a hollow Army.”

The right mix between training, manpower and modernization must be found, he said. He emphasized that flexibility is necessary to achieve the right mix, and sequestration calls for a 10-percent cut in accounts across the board.

About 251,000 Army civilian employees will be furloughed one day per week without pay under sequestration, Odierno said.

The furloughs would begin in mid-April and extend through September in order to achieve a 10-percent reduction in pay for the fiscal year.

About 48 percent of the Army budget is in people, he said. So the Army will need to reduce both military and civilian personnel under sequestration, he said.

The Army has already terminated an estimated 31,000 temporary and term employees, he said. And a hiring freeze has been implemented. Sequestration will mean additional cuts to employees, especially at maintenance depots, he said.

What is the IMA Program?

The IMA program is designed to facilitate the rapid expansion of the active Army wartime Department of Defense

structure and/or other government departments or agencies. IMAs help the Army meet military manpower requirements in the event of military contingency, pre-mobilization, mobilization, sustainment and/or demobilization operations.

These Soldiers are currently serving on a parttime basis in more than 73 Army agencies through-

out the United States and overseas (Europe and Korea).

IMA Soldiers serve in the Army Special Operation C o m m a n d s , Intelligence and Security Command, Central Command, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense, just to name a few.

IMA Soldiers are required to perform a minimum of 12 annual training days each fiscal year and may be authorized to perform up to 48 4-hour periods of augmented duty for training.

The IMA Soldier coordinates directly with the agency IMA coordinator to schedule the AT and IDT periods. While serving in the IMA program, you can work with your coordinator to do all your

Before obtaining a loan for some fast cash, know your rights.

The Military Lending Act of 2007 protects the members of the armed forces, as well as dependants of active duty military, from predatory lending practices.

Predatory lending describes the deceptive and fraudulent practices that some lenders use to entice borrowers into loan agreements with exorbitant fees and high interest rates.

Payday loans, car title loans, and tax-refund anticipation loans are usually characterized by extremely high interest rates and

fees. A payday loan (also known as cash advance loan) is a small short-term loan advanced to the borrower.

The money is generally due back to the loan company by the borrower’s next payday.

A car title loan is another type of short-term loan in which the lender uses the borrower’s car title as collateral.

With tax season fast approaching, borrowers may be considering a tax-refund anticipation loan, which is a short term advance against the borrower’s income tax refund.

The MLA provides statutory requirements for payday loans, car title loans and tax-refund an-

ticipation loans. The MLA prohibits creditors from charging more than a 36 percent annual percentage rate on these types of loans. If a loan company offers you a loan with an interest rate in excess of 36 percent, walk away.

The MLA also requires creditors to provide military members, or their dependents, with a statement of the APR, a clear description of all payment obligations, as well as any disclosures required under the Truth in Lending Act. If you do not receive this information, or do not understand it because it is unclear, do not obligate yourself to the loan.

Senate confirms Hagel as Defense Secretary Jim Garamone American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON – The Senate confirmed former Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel to serve as secretary of defense Tuesday, ending a protracted confirmation process.

Hagel, a decorated Vietnam veteran, was sworn in Wednesday, succeeding Leon E. Panetta, who retired. The vote in the Senate was 58-41.

In a farewell message to the department, Panetta said it has been “the privilege of a lifetime to lead the men and women of this Department, and I am grateful that President Obama selected such an outstanding leader to take my place.”

President Barack Obama nominated Hagel on Jan. 7. He testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Jan. 30, and the committee recommended him for confirmation to the full Senate on Feb. 12.

Hagel earned two Purple Hearts during service as an Army sergeant, and served as the senator from Nebraska from 1997 to 2009.

Hagel “has signaled his very strong commitment right away to get down to business and to get deeply invested in the work of the Pentagon and its military and civilian workers” if he were to be confirmed, Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said during a Pentagon news conference earlier Tuesday.

WASHINGTON â&#x20AC;&#x201C; This week, U.S. service members around the world, along with their spouses and children, are being challenged to take a pledge to save money in their home budgets â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to â&#x20AC;&#x153;set a goal, make a plan and save automatically.â&#x20AC;?

As part of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Military Saves Week 2013,â&#x20AC;? which began Feb. 25 and runs through March 2, service members and their families can visit http://militarysaves. org to take the pledge, said Barbara Thompson, the Defense Departmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s director of family policy and children and youth.

Thompson said this is the seventh year of Military Saves Week, which is co-sponsored by the Consumer Federation of America. The week focuses on helping military families learn to save money, and to ensure they have the tools needed to reduce their debt and save for the future.

Thompson said tools available to military families include the certified financial managers at military family centers that provide education and budgeting and counseling to service members and their families.

Military banks and credit unions on installations, she said, also are required to provide financial management educational tools to service members and families. Additionally, the Military OneSource program, accessible 24/7 online or via telephone, allows service members to get referrals for up to 12 sessions of financial counseling.

Mrs. Battaglia said that she and her husband are like every other military family. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve moved more than 16 times in 27 years, she said, and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve faced family emergencies and shaped their lifestyle to be based on one income. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As part of building a family, we, like others, sat down as a team and drew up a budget, adjusted it over the years, and saved where we could,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Early on, Mrs. Battaglia said, her family socked their money away in U.S. Savings Bonds as a way to guarantee a bright future. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We saved for many years and built a nest egg,â&#x20AC;? she added.

Today, the Thrift Savings Plan is available to service members, and the Battaglias said itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good decision to participate.

As additional cost-saving measures at home, Mrs. Battaglia told the bloggers, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been making lunch for her husband every day for longer than she can remember. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Call me old-fashioned,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Not only does it promote

nutritional fitness, but the money that we saved over the course of time is huge.â&#x20AC;?

She also said that the sergeant major cuts his own hair, saving as much as seven dollars each week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You add it up -- 52 weeks at seven or eight dollars a week, plus tips,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These are just a couple ways that we still save to this day.â&#x20AC;?

Mrs. Battaglia said her advice to service members is to live within their means, and, if possible, to have one person in the family manage finances.

Though their family can afford more expensive things now, Mrs. Battaglia said, they have built financial discipline into their household, and now the money they still choose to save in small places can be used in other places for more important things. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Financial fitness should be in every household,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Sgt. Maj. Major Battaglia said young military families can be tempted to live beyond their means and can complicate matters with impulse buying. But the financial instability that comes with succumbing to temptation and irresponsible spending can have implications beyond the bank account, he added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Financial instability brings tension within a relationship and a marriage,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Financial fitness plays a big role in more than just being healthy in the wallet. We would like to teach a behavior within society, which once was, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s OK for young military couples to have secondhand furniture.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;Ś The cinder block with the piece of wood or the electrical spool that got sanded down and varnished as a coffee table really worked just fine as furniture for a young family like we (were), just starting out.â&#x20AC;?

The sergeant major also touched on a dangerous pitfall for young troops short on cash â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the payday lenders, loan sharks and

â&#x20AC;&#x153;questionable sales people that are ready to latch on to service members and families as soon as they enter into the military.â&#x20AC;?

Battaglia emphasized that services must educate their troops to not be tempted by payday lenders and others â&#x20AC;&#x153;who are out to make a profit at any expense, and especially at a service memberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s expense.â&#x20AC;?

As an example, Battaglia said that in his youth â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at a time when there was no direct deposit of military pay and service members were paid in cash â&#x20AC;&#x201C; service members who ran out of funds might be tempted to go to a payday lender. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There were â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;sharksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; out in the local community who would loan you $150, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s say, hypothetically speaking â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and the following payday when you got paid, you had to pay them $250 back,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So those loan sharks were hungry and active back then, and my senior (noncommissioned officers) kind of steered me away from those folks.â&#x20AC;?

To protect service members from those threats, Battaglia said, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important that military leaders provide counseling to their subordinates, and in some cases, be involved or be available in the decisions junior service members make that could dramatically affect their financial standing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When a young trooper is preparing to buy a first car, I think a leader must be involved,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even when a young trooper is preparing to have a child for the first time, I think a leader

must be engaged, and when a young trooper is preparing for marriage, a leader just has to be there. Each one of those realworld instances are investments, and major expenses â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and if they are not done correctly, they could be catastrophic.â&#x20AC;?

Thompson said that financial education needs to start young, and military children are reaping the benefit of that philosophy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We feel itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to start with our military children,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So many of them enter the military or are considering entering the military. So part of Military Saves includes our youth centers and our school-age programs. And Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m of a personal belief that we start with our preschoolers on basic money management.â&#x20AC;?

Starting young on responsible money management education is important, she said, because many people entering the service are already in debt. She said that her office is working to develop a program for those who have been recruited into the military, but who have not yet started basic training, to help them deal with financial issues before they actually put their uniform on for the first time.

Thompson recommended the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Money as You Growâ&#x20AC;? website, developed by the Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Advisory Council on Financial Capability, as a useful tool in communicating to children of varying ages, in language understandable to them, the importance of how to use and manage money.

As of Jan. 30, under the direction of the U.S. Army Medical Command Chief of Staff, patient medical bills less than $100,000 and more than 90 days past due will be transferred to the U.S. Treasury Department for collection.

For Kenner Army Health Clinic beneficiaries, the change

will primarily affect ambulance usage because the Clinic is not an in-patient facility. Only active duty service members are exempt from the new debt management system.

“To avoid bills being transferred to the U.S. Treasury, patients with a balance due should contact the PatientAdministration Division, Uniformed Business Office at Kenner Army Health Clinic to make payment arrange-

ments,” said Capt.

Beverly VanTull, chief of Patient Administration.

“Patients unable to pay the balance in full may request a repayment schedule of not less than $50 per month and not longer than 36 months.

Payments may be made by check or money order; a credit card payment option is not available yet,” VanTull said.

Once overdue medical bills are transferred, Kenner will

no longer be able to accept payments or negotiate a repayment plan.

The patient will be required to contact the U.S. Treasury Department’s FedDebt Division at (888) 826-3127 to settle their debt with the U.S. Government.

In addition, the U.S. Treasury Department will apply fees, penalties and interest to debt transferred for collection.

All Military Treatment Facilities had to implement the FedDebt program no later than Jan. 30.

practice will expedite the collection process, improve the internal controls for out-ofservice debt management, reduce costs and provide an improved audit trail.

cholesterol with diet Continued from page 2 Choosing foods with plant sterols or stanols is one more way to reduce your cholesterol level with a food choice. These plant chemicals, generally referred to as phytosterols, are structurally similar to the cholesterol that is found in animal foods.

When the phytosterols are ingested, they bind preferentially to the sites

that cholesterol would have bound to and cause the cholesterol molecules to pass through the digestive tract without being absorbed.

Phytosterols are found in the cell walls of plant foods, and some foods have more than others. The best sources are whole grains, dried beans and peas, lentils, and certain nuts and seeds; however, these beneficial plant chemicals do not naturally

occur in the amounts needed to provide cholesterol lowering effect.

Fortunately, phytosterols have been developed as food additives and supplement products ranging from orange juice to margarine and mayonnaise.

Research has shown that, when added to a “heart healthy” diet, consumption of sterol or stanol fortified foods at meals throughout the day can lower a

person’s total cholesterol level by as much as 10 percent, and LDL cholesterol by as much as 14 percent. Evidence for the positive effect of plant sterols and stanols is strong enough for the National Cholesterol Education Program to make the recommendation that persons with high cholesterol levels incorporate sterol and/ or stanol fortified foods for a total daily intake of two grams.

The 108th wrapped up its operations on Friday and headed back to Fort Lee. They are scheduled to return later this week to Fort Pickett to participate in yet another exercise. On top of that, the unit has been busy on a daily basis in preparation for an inactivation planned later this year.

Staff Sgt. Maurice Dockery, a 108th platoon sergeant and noncommissioned officer in charge of battalion operations during the exercise, said despite ongoing activities related to the inactivation, the unit still has an obligation to train Soldiers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Inactivation or not, I still have to train and prep these guys for missions,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have had to multi-task a lot. On some days, we had people who we sent to help with the inactivation as far as turning in equipment then we would flip-flopp. What I taught to one group on one day, I would teach on the next day to another. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how we

managed the entire piece.â&#x20AC;?

The exercise was also a refreshing change of pace for the unit, a combat service support company that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the same training opportunities as similar units at installations like as Fort Campbell, Ky., or Fort Hood, Texas. Maddox said he could tell the training lifted the Soldiers, especially those who have not had field training. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It means a lot,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rather than sitting around and wasting time, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re actually doing what you enlisted to do. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good for everyone to come out and put their hands on something. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s definitely been a big change in morale since we came out here.â&#x20AC;?

The unit first sergeant noticed as well and seemed grateful that his charges benefitted from the exercise. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It has been exciting and totally phenomenal,â&#x20AC;? said 108th 1st Sgt. Jason Johnson. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get this type of opportunity every day at Fort Lee.â&#x20AC;?

AAFES identifies fraudulent ads DALLAS – Using the bogus company title “Exchange Inc,” a scammer has been placing advertisements in auto magazines and commercial newspapers, leading Army and Air Force Exchange Service shoppers to believe they’re purchasing a vehicle through the Department of Defense retailer.

“This has been a problem for the past few months where

someone is using the Exchange’s trademarked logo and name without permission to purportedly sell vehicles in the United States,” said Rick Koloski, the Exchange’s loss prevention vice president. “Unfortunately, some have sent money only to receive nothing in return.”

Despite the fact that military exchanges do not have the authority to sell vehicles in the

continental United States, the individuals responsible for these advertisements have left consumers with the impression they are doing business with the DoD’s oldest and largest exchange service.

“This type of fraud has proliferated with the use of the internet and continues to be a challenge because the perpetrator often cannot be identified, as

the methods they utilize are not traceable back to any individual,” said Koloski. “In fact, in a most recent case, money-grams sent by one couple were picked up in Bangladesh, indicating this crime goes well beyond U.S. borders.”

Shoppers who believe they may have been taken advantage of can file a complaint through the Internet Crime Complaint

Center at www.ic3.gov.

All advertisements for legitimate Exchange offerings are published in outlets whose audiences are mostly comprised of military members.

The practice is known as pricing parity and the costs for products available around the world are centrally established.

“While price differentiations can occur with items purchased overseas, per Department of Defense

policy, the Exchange doesn’t increase prices in order to cover shipping or other higher operational costs,” said the Fort Lee Exchange General Manager Audrey Alston.

“We work to bring Soldiers and their families ‘a taste of home’ no matter where in the world they go.”

Despite the Exchange’s efforts to price consistently, a few exceptions can occur.

“Shoppers may see some price differences between locations in the continental

United States and overseas for categories such as gasoline, alcohol and tobacco,” said Alston. “These prices are based on Department of Energy benchmarks or local surveys, in accordance with DoD directives.”

Additionally, prices for some convenience and frequently purchased items may be lower at different locations based on local promotions or price surveys. To ensure prices on these same items overseas are consistent with those

Troops, vets want ‘fair shot’ at employment, Battaglia says Claudette Roulo American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON – Service members and veterans are more than prepared to transition into civilian employment, the senior enlisted advisor to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Monday.

Following the release today of a report by the Executive Office of the President titled “The Fast Track to Civilian Employment: Streamlining Credentialing and Licensing for Service Members, Veterans and their Spouses,” Marine Corps Sgt. Major Bryan B. Battaglia told reporters in a conference call with White House officials that the skills, dedication and discipline conferred by military service makes veterans an asset to any civilian employer.

In February 2012, only 11 states had legislation intended to assist military spouses in transferring their licenses or certifications when they moved to a new state, said Tina Tchen, chief of staff to First Lady Michelle Obama. In part due to the efforts of the “Joining Forces” initiative championed by the first lady and Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden – along with the president’s military credentialing and licensing task force, 28 states now have such legisla-

tion, she said, and more are working toward that goal.

For now, the task is to build upon existing success by reforming the state regulatory systems around health care and transportation professions to make it easier for veterans and service members to transfer their military training, Tchen said.

The administration’s goal is for all 50 states to have taken legislative or executive action by the end of 2015 to help service members and veterans get the credentials they need, she added.

Service members have the skills that civilian employers need, Battaglia said. “Our service men and women are some of the most highly trained, innovative, resilient (and) adaptable … individuals that our country has to offer.”

Those troops enlisted in large part while the United States was at war, he said, but now, due to the drawdowns from Iraq and Afghanistan, increasing numbers of service members are separating.

“In addition to the 34,000 troops coming home from Afghanistan … over the next several years, we expect as many as 1 million service members to return to civilian life,” Tchen said.

“If we don’t get something in place, we will have multiple solutions, just because the demand out there to be able to use these devices is so strong.”

Officials are planning for a phased implementation involving vendor competition for development of a system that Takai suggests, given DoD’s 3 million plus employees, could prove to be a model for large companies that also need to protect the transmission of both open and confidential data.

“We are paving the way for many aspects on both networks,” she said.

Help teens be aware, prevent dating violence “He loves me. He loves me not.” Many of us are familiar with the childhood game of plucking petals from a flower deciding if a guy (or girl) reciprocates one’s affections.

As you pluck each petal, you think of all of the wonderful ways in which the other person has displayed feelings toward you.

However, teenagers often mistake unhealthy behaviors displayed by their significant others as “love.”

Teenagers, just as adults, may have a misconception of what a healthy relationship looks like.

Behaviors such as jealousy, neediness and the overbearing desire to spend time with a partner, often viewed as signs of caring, may be red flags of an abusive relationship.

Dating violence, defined as controlling, abusive, and aggressive behavior in a romantic relationship, occurs in both heterosexual and homosexual situations.

It can include verbal, emotional, physical or sexual abuse.

In a 2011 study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control, 13.4 percent of females and 10.7 percent of males in the Commonwealth of Virginia reported being hit, slapped or physically hurt on purpose by their boyfriend of girlfriend in the 12 months prior to the survey.

The adolescent stage is a very trying time in life.

Along with balancing a de-

manding academic course load and extracurricular activities, young adults must also deal with body changes and trying to fit in.

Adding an unhealthy relationship on top of these obstacles can be overwhelming.

Abusive relationships have significant negative impact on teenagers. As a result of these unhealthy relationships, teens are more likely to pay less attention to academics, have an increased exposure to drugs and alcohol and a greater likelihood of pregnancy.

With one in three students reporting some form of abuse and only 33 percent of them telling anyone about it, it is important for our community to create opportunities to talk about the issue of teen dating violence.

It is important for teens to know they have the support of their family and community. They should know that they deserve a partner who treats them with respect and they have the right to set boundaries in their relationships.

Teens also have the right to gain an understanding of what “love” is; abusive behavior is not an indication of love.

In 2010, Congress approved February as National Teen Violence Awareness and Prevention Month in an effort to raise awareness about abuse in teen relationships and pro-

Calendar, continued SPORTS & FITNESS Dodgeball Intramurals | March 7 The Family and MWR Sports Office will hold a coaches meeting for Dodgeball Intramurals, March 7, 4 p.m., at Clark Fitness Center.

Get Fit, Stay Fit | Daily A variety of weekly fitness classes are available through the Family and MWR Sports Office.

The cost is usually $4 per class, and a fitness card may be used for most. The 10-class punch card costs $20.

Some classes are free. Classes for which there is a fee include Boot Camp, aerobics and Zumba.

Free classes include Workout with Weights in the House of Pain.

Fitness class participants must be age 16 or older and eligible fitness facility patrons. The WWW in the House of Pain class is for those 18 and older.

POW Range | Sundays A range is open for personally owned weapons Sundays, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., at Fort Lee Range 8 off of River Road.

Cost is $5 for the first hour and $2.50 for every 30 minutes after.

Targets are for sale at the range.

Berkeley is a living history lesson and children can learn about the lives of Benjamin Harrison, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and his son, William H. Harrison, the ninth
