Today’s generation of networked multifunctional devices – laptops iPads, smartphones, digital copiers and the like – give us astounding access to entertainment and information, and the ability to perform work functions more efficiently than ever before.

However, these “smart” devices also present a risk. They require hard drives to store information and manage device functions and application workloads. Even copiers these days store date about the documents they print, scan, fax or email. If individuals neglect to take proper steps to

protect that data, it can be stolen either by remote access or by extracting it from the hard drive once removed.

Copiers should be managed and maintained by an organization’s information technology staff. Follow proper information assurance procedures before acquiring business machines, and make sure the copier is authorized before connecting it to the government network.

In addition, organizational IT specialists should make sure digital copiers connected to the network are securely integrated.

Just like computers and servers that store sensitive information, networked copiers should be protected against outside intrusions and virus attacks as well.

Social networking sites, chat rooms, virtual world and blogs are how many people interact online. Sharing too much information is one of the biggest pitfalls in this area, especially among the younger generation. It is important to learn how to safely navigate these sites and use privacy settings to safeguard information not meant to float around in the cyber world.

Sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Flickr, BlogSpot, Twitter and others have adjustable privacy settings so users can restrict access to their profiles. The importance of using such features cannot be over-emphasized. It ensures any information being seen is what the user is comfortable sharing with family, friends and the general public. Also keep in mind that criminals and terrorists often troll social media sites for potential targets. That alone should be all the reason one needs to remain diligent about online security.

Here’s another tip. Most chat programs allow parents to control whether people on their child’s contact list can see their status, including whether they are online.

Some chat and email accounts allow parents to determine who can send messages to their children and block anyone not on the list. Any parent who wants to know who their children’s friends are offline should be equally interested in who they are talking to online.

The Army requires Personally Identifiable Information to be appropriately protected and that affected individuals be notified of any reasonable suspicion of a compromise of that information.

Kids on site at fitness centers, “Soldier for Life” impact on prior service members and Exceptional Family Member Program continuity were the selected issues addressed by delegates to top leaders at the Army Family Action Plan Conference outbrief Oct. 19 at Memorial Chapel.

Focused on the theme “Where Your Voice Matters,” subject matter experts worked diligently along with 24 Fort Lee community delegates for two days on high value concerns. The delegates were broken into three demographics: Family Service, Force Support and Health Services. Each working group had an average of eight local issues to narrow down to one concern to discuss at the AFAP out-brief.

The three working teams performed a skit for Maj. Gen. Darrel K. Williams, CASCOM and Fort Lee commanding general; Col. Adam W. Butler, garrison commander; many senior local leaders and spouses.

The first team, Family Service, performed a skit about exercise facilities on the installation that lack childcare services for family members.

Williams gave his feedback after the skit and said, “I was not aware this was an

issue. I thank you for bringing it to my attention. I can’t promise you if I’ll be able to do something about it, but we certainly will take a look at it. Our dilemma is, our budget on post is dramatically decreasing. The question becomes, what else do you want to give up in order to create this service? We will have to take a hard look at other things on the installation to see if there is a trade-off in order to create this service.”

The second working group, Force Service, spoke on “Soldier for Life.” The team stated prior to 2013, Soldiers who have gotten out are not aware of this service. There needs to be more emphasis on marketing this campaign.

Williams said, “You are in the most lucrative job environment in terms of opportunity in the country. We have all kinds of businesses moving to central Virginia. Part of them moving here, they want to take advantage of the ex-military population. It is a part of their business strategy to hire military veterans. The good news is they love to hire veterans and families. The bad part is, I don’t think we are getting the word out. We need to do a better job at that.”

A few of the local leaders in the audience addressed this concern stating it is not an Army problem, but a TRICARE issue. For now, pre-planning on the family member’s party will need to take place until TRICARE can fix these matters.

“In order to grow you must evaluate and invest,” she said.

“It was no easy feat for the delegates or our facilitators to have to accomplish such

programs in waste reduction, recycling and litter prevention annually. The award was presented at their annual meeting’s award ceremony.

After a pilot program that installed a dehydrator at a dining facility on post led to a significant reduction in food waste, efforts were made to install dehydrators in all of the dining facilities here.

This program – and EMD – has been recognized by several organizations for its ability to help move the installation toward its Net Zero Waste goal.

Change to Taxi Services The Marshall Cab Company is the sole contracted taxi service provider authorized to solicit fares on Fort Lee, according to a recent Provost Marshal Office announcement. The company’s vehicles – grey in color – should be the only cabs using the Army and Air Force Exchange Service-designated taxi stands.

All other taxi services off post may pick up and drop off passengers here if they are hired by community-connected patrons; however, they cannot actively solicit fares on the installation, according to the PMO.

The spouse of a Kenner Army Health Clinic junior enlisted Soldier received a free-grocery prize valued at $2,500 during a lunchtime ceremony Tuesday at the Fort Lee Commissary.

Michelle Liens, mother of three, said she was “taken completely by surprise” when a representative of the Armour food company – the award sponsors – called her forward for recognition. “I had no idea I won,” she said. “They told me I was a runner-up and asked if I could attend to show my support.

When they said my name and invited me up front, it was a total shock. I was shaking through most of the ceremony.”

Describing what the prize means to her family, Michelle said she and her husband, Pfc. Raymond Liens, have struggled with finances – partly due to the pay scale associated with his rank and limited time in service, but also her choice to be a stay-athome mom who isn’t contributing to their income.

“With our budget, we’ve always had to decide what we can afford to put on the table and how to make groceries stretch as far as possible, which isn’t easy with kids who are always hungry,” she said. “This prize means not having to worry about that for a while. Also, we’re coming up on the holidays, so it’s a blessing from that aspect as well. There’s no doubt this is going to help us tremendously.”

“We started this in April, and have already spotlighted many strong, inspiring individuals … coach moms, teacher moms and stayat-home professionals,” Weathersby said.

“This is our first military mom, and we hope there are many more. Their sacrifice for this country must be acknowledged and celebrated.”

Sallie Cauthers, a DeCA mass communication and marketing specialist, said her organization is working with corporate supporters to create additional opportunities of this nature.

“We’re trying to stimulate year-round opportunities to recognize a greater number of our valued patrons,” she said. “That’s what this ceremony represents, and it’s a very exciting time for the Commissary family.”

Kenner clinic, PMO share Halloween safety reminders Fort Lee’s trick-or-treat hours are set for 6-8 p.m. Oct. 31, and post residents and visitors – particularly those who plan to participate in this evening of spooky fun – are reminded extra precautions are necessary to ensure the safety of the installation’s smallest residents.

The speed limit in all housing areas is 15 miles-per-hour, however, motorists should drive even slower in areas where children are present and pay extra attention when passing vehicles parked along the curb as they may obscure excited youngsters and other pedestrians crossing the street.

Post housing residents who plan to hand out treats should leave their porch light on, while those not interested or unavailable should turn them off. This also promotes safety by illuminating walkways and

making potential tripping hazards visible. Along those same lines, residents can help by picking up anything a child could trip over like garden hoses, toys, bikes and lawn decorations, and sweeping wet leaves from the sidewalk and steps.

A parent or other designated adult should always accompany young children during the neighborhood rounds while trick-ortreating. Notify the Fort Lee Police of any lost children whose sponsor cannot be readily located.

Other Halloween-related tips offered by the Provost Marshal Office and Wilkerson Pediatric Clinic at Kenner include the following: • When pumpkin-carving with children, let them draw shapes and faces with a marker and restrict the actual cutting to adults. Use battery-operated lights. If using a

candle with a flame, keep it away from walkways or places where it could ignite clothing or curtains.

• Costumes should be flame retardant and fit properly. Avoid oversized shoes, high heels and long skirts or pants that could cause a child to fall. Masks are not recommended. Always choose nontoxic and hypoallergenic make-up if children want to decorate their faces.

• Serve kids a healthy dinner before trick-or-treating so they won’t fill up on candy. Remind them not to eat any goodies collected until they are checked out by an adult to ensure they are safe.

• When selecting items for trick-or-treaters, consider alternatives like trick-or-treat gift certificates, colored pencils, stickers or decorative shoelaces. Avoid treats

that pose a choking hazard such as gum, peanuts, hard candy or small toys.

• Only trick-or-treat in wellknown areas. Never enter a stranger’s home or car for a treat. Never agree to help a stranger find a lost person or pet. Stay with your parent or group.

• Obey traffic and pedestrian regulations; always walk, never run across a street. Only cross the street as a group. Use marked crosswalks when available. Remove masks or items limiting eyesight before crossing a street.

• Use a flashlight that can be seen by others. Place reflective tape on costumes, outer clothing and/or candy containers.

• Instruct children to get out of cars on the curb side, not the traffic side.

• Establish a curfew for older children.

• Set a limit on the number of days candy can remain in the house after Halloween before it is thrown out.

• A scary movie on television or video is a Halloween tra-

dition many children can’t resist.

Unfortunately, quite a few experience nightmares after watching these films and may not be able to discern make-believe from reality.

The pediatric clinic often sees children with sleep problems resulting from scary movies that are inappropriate for their age.

To promote safety, PMO personnel will conduct vehicle and bike patrols throughout Halloween evening. Volunteers from military units on post also will be walking through neighborhoods to discourage potentially harmful behavior. Law enforcement authorities should be notified immediately of any suspicious or unlawful activity.

Why you chose to be a motor transport operator: “Because military police wasn’t available when I signed up. They also told me I would be in ‘the fight,’ and I wanted to be in ‘the fight.’”

Why you joined the Army: “I felt like it was something I had to overcome. When I was younger, I was in ROTC, and when I got older, I became a dental assistant and felt like something was missing. Nine-eleven had a lot to do with it. I had a friend who passed away in the building. It was just a bad experience, and I just wanted to be there and try to help as much as I could. You really don’t know what you’re getting yourself into until you join, but it was the right thing to do.”

You deployed to Afghanistan in 2013. What do you most remember about deployment?

“The IEDs – getting used to falling asleep while hearing them go off but waking up anyway, and thanking God for waking every morning and actually being alive.”

Talk about driving down roads that might be planted with IEDs: “It was terrifying yet exhilarating. Exhilarating because this is why I joined the fight. Terrifying because any given second, I could have died.”

What it means to serve your country: “It is an honor to put this uniform on every day; to be a Soldier and to fight and stand

for what I believe in and just keep freedom free.”

Best thing about the Army: “Building cohesion; you meet new people you don’t know anything about, but you learn to build that cohesion. It’s crazy how we’re willing to die for one another.”

Worst thing about the Army: “Meeting people, getting to know them, building a family and whenever the Army needs you to move, you’ve got to go, so you say ‘bye.’”

What you would change as Chief of Staff of the Army: “The promotion boards. I would prefer they be organized as training lanes rather than sitting in front of the command sergeants major answering questions.”

Future plans: “Continue with my college and get a bachelor’s degree; become a drill sergeant and a warrant officer; and getting married and having kids.”

Staff Sgt. Kevin Wethly is the installation CFC Agency Campaign manager for the second year in a row.

Wethly said a training session was held recently to prepare unit representatives, and they received the CFC materials to distribute. In those materials, tho potential donors can read about the organizations participating in the campaign.

“Everyone has special groups and organizations they want to support that do good work, and now is the time to help them and those who are less fortunate,” said Wethly.

Fort Lee does not set a monetary goal but wants 100 percent face-to-face contact with all service members and employees on the installation, according to Wethly.

Recently, the president issued an Executive Order making two key changes to EO 12353, which authorizes the Office of Personnel Management to lead the CFC program. For more than 50 years, CFC has been the largest workplace-giving program in the world, and with the issuance of the new EO on Oct. 13, OPM

announced two new improvements to the program that will take effect in September 2017.

The first improvement will allow federal retirees to participate in the CFC, including the ability to contribute donations through monthly annuity payments.

The second improvement allows for federal employees to volunteer with charitable organizations, and for those hours to count toward CFC goals. For example, many campaigns and Federal agencies set fundraising goals. Instead of being allowed to only contribute money, volunteer hours will be monetized and will count toward the total amount raised. In order to monetize volunteer hours, an estimated value will be given to one hour of volunteer time, which will be used to calculate the total value of volunteer time given by a donor.

Survivor beats odds, shares story Lesley Atkinson Family/Community Life Reporter

Christy Sims, author of “Yellow Tulips on A Cloudy Day,” is a domestic violence survivor who shared her heartwrenching story during a Domestic Violence Awareness Month program Friday at the Army Quartermaster Museum.

At first glance, Sims presented the image of flawless beauty as she stepped away from the lectern in her black, fitted dress and silky shoulder-length hair. With a closer look, however, it became obvious she had suffered a trauma she is no doubt reminded of every time she looks in the mirror.

She described the day it happened. It was a Sunday afternoon in late April three years ago. Sims had no reason to think anything was wrong when her then boyfriend called her to the bathroom.

He was standing on a floor covered in water, holding a bowl of liquid sulfuric acid. When she entered the room, he threw it at her, dousing her face and body. In a matter of seconds, her life was changed forever.

“How did I get here?” she asked the audience. “I am a professional counselor. I come from a good family who loves me. I have always been a confident woman. So, how did I get to this place in my life?”

She shared moments of her past – how she was the first in her family to go to college; how she lived a normal life, and thought she had it all “figured out.” She got married, had two kids and the whole shebang. Her Cinderella story, however, was eventually eroded by relationship problems and it ultimately led to a divorce after 14 years.

With a new beginning, she started dating again and met a man who was charming and showered her with compliments and surprise gifts.

“We need that validation as women,” she said. “I was falling

in what I thought was love.”

Over time, though, she started to discover more about herself and the man who was in her life.

She began to notice his insecurities that manifested when she redirected her focus from the always doting girlfriend to someone trying to fix herself.

He began to analyze everything, she said, and didn’t like what he saw. He expressed hatred toward her by picking on her body, her age, anything to bring her down. She started to feel insecure about things she never doubted before. Sims was being abused and didn’t know it.

“I just didn’t see it,” she said.

“It took almost three years to own up to it. You see, abusers don’t just walk up and punch you in a face. They chip away to a degree.

If I had not made the decision to not marry this guy (the reason he attacked her) he would have talked me down to a level you would not recognize me. I would not be strong enough to stand in front of you today.”

She talked about how he was adamant about getting married.

Sims said she was simply not interested. She wanted to date and enjoy her new life.

“It wasn’t because he loved me. He was a single dad and wanted me to take care of his children,” she noted. “He loved the idea of being married to an attractive, educated woman he could show off to his family. Did he really love me? I doubt it because, if he did, he wouldn’t have torn me down and made me feel bad about myself He would have lifted me up.”

She talked about her studies of human behavior and how his was not normal.

“Something was not right about him. He would try to find every void, failure and insecurity to make me feel horrible.”

Her son, who was 13 at the time, said to her, “I hear sirens going-off inside me when he is around.” Sims knew this feeling because she had the same sirens,

but she had pushed it down deep inside because she was in a relationship.

Reaching the point where she was tired of feeling imprisoned in her own skin, Sims started to back away from the relationship.

A month passed, and her steadily decreasing attention pushed his insecurities to a new level of rage and jealousy. Sims asked God to help her end the relationship. She was determined to move forward with her life and find happiness. Those notions were met with hatred as her abuser lost control over her.

According to Sims, the moment in the bathroom was filled with rage. He had no remorse for his actions when he threw the acid, which is used to melt metal.

“The goal was to make sure I was unattractive,” she said. “I believe he was thinking … ‘if she

isn’t going to marry me, she will not marry anybody.’ He was trying to destroy me.”

Sims suffered third- and fourth-degree acid burns on her face, neck, chest and arms during the attack. The injuries were so bad she was in a coma for two months.

When she awoke, she said there was a fight within her to make sure people knew what happened.

During her recovery, she had to relearn how to walk, feed herself, see again, and her face was restored piece-by-piece with a total of 13 surgeries.

“Nothing on my face are my original features. One hundred percent of it suffered fourth-degree burns.”

She began to write a book about her feelings and being a survivor. This helped her with her

journey to recovery.

“My story is about domestic violence, but it is also about survival, overcoming variables and miracles. That is why I don’t let people call me a victim.

“I know for certain somebody in this room – even if that one person is not a domestic violence survivor – will be affected by what I have to say. That’s what keeps me going even on those days when I don’t want to get up. It’s not fun to go out in public like this. It is not glamorous, but every time I open my mouth, I believe somebody is saved. Somebody will make a different decision.”

She continued to tell the audience she might not affect them today, but hopefully they will tell her story to someone else.

“Domestic violence is everybody’s problem,” she said. “For a long time, the title ‘domestic violence’ was in the home, but nobody wanted to talk about it.

There was a stigma attached to it. The reason it is everybody’s problem is because it goes to school, it goes to work, it affects productivity – everything.

“I’m going to continue this fight. It’s what I do now. I show people it can happen to anybody, even someone educated.”

Her ex-boyfriend walked free for a year before being arrested.

During that time, he was in another relationship, expecting a child and attending church. He had moved on with his life. He had told the police it was an accident. However, he eventually was sentenced to 20 years for aggravated assault and aggravated battery on July 23, 2015.

The presentation was hosted by the Army Community Service Family Advocacy Program.

Those who man the ships, called mariners,

learn all the necessities to operate and sustain them. That includes fire fighting. When a ship is underway and a fire is aboard, personnel may not have access to emergency services and must act on their own. This vital lesson is learned within the first two weeks of the 88L Watercraft Engineer Course.

Steven Zeliff, lead fire instructor, Maritime Intermodal Training Division, said the ability to fight fires is critical to watercraft safety and operation. From the onset of training, he added, instructors put just as much energy into conveying the

seriousness of the matter as they do to teaching the tasks.

“We teach them how to survive at sea if they have a fire, and make sure they understand this is real; that this could happen and they have to take it seriously,” he said.

During a recent training session, Zeliff and move amongst the students with a sense of sternness, quick to point out discrepancies, mistakes and shortcomings. Their approach is best described as “tough love.”

“It’s a life or death situation,” said Zeliff. “On

the USS Forrestal in 1967, 134 Sailors died in a fire. There’s been countless fires on vessels, and I take great pride in making sure my Soldiers all come home.”

The 88Ls receive a total of 16 hours of fire training – eight in the classroom followed by eight at a fire trainer, essentially a trailer with the ability to generate fires.

At the fire trainer, Soldiers performed a number of tasks to fight a storage room fire. They donned protective gear, located hoses and other equipment, located the fire and attacked the fire ap-

With the vibrant atmosphere of last summer’s XXXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro now a distant memory, Sam Kendricks, the bronze medal-winning athlete, can now settle into the role of Sam Kendricks, Army second lieutenant.

The Mississippi-born-and-bred Soldier traded his athletic workwear for the camouflage duty uniform Oct. 3 when he began the 16-week Transportation Basic Officer Leader Course at the Army Logistics University. The reservist said the transition from athletic endeavor to military training environment has been minimal because the levels of focus needed to be successful are similar.

“Wherever I go around the world, I’m always wearing the uniform under the skin and having to represent because you never stop being a professional athlete as you would never stop being an officer,” he said. “It really allowed me step back into a role I was rather familiar with.”

Kendricks, aside from placing third in the pole vault, earned even greater acclaim when – true to “wearing the uniform under the skin” – he halted his sprint during qualifications to stand at the position of attention while the U.S. national anthem was playing for another athlete. His act of honor was featured on media outlets around the world and eventually got the attention of the commander in chief.

“We used to get up together in the mornings and run, and we did a lot of pushups and sit-ups.”

The environment in which the Kendricks children were reared demanded discipline. The family raised horses and other animals that required constant attention. The work also was humbling. Sam and his brother had plenty of chances to exercise their olfactory system as well as their biceps “scooping” manure on a daily basis.

“We wanted them to have a work ethic, and we wanted them grounded,” said Scott, who headed the Oxford HS track and field team at that time.

The Kendricks way of childrearing would pay off for Sam. Considered only a mediocre polevaulter in the beginning – “He was probably the worst pole vaulter prospect I ever coached,” said his father – Sam surged ahead on his path toward improvement.

“Eventually, because of that work ethic, he got better and pretty soon he was the guy who was doing the winning, but he had to earn it,” said Scott. “That’s one reason he is grounded and humble.”

Sam went on to become the state high school outdoor pole vault champion in 2010 and 2011, his junior and senior year, respectively. The younger Kendricks’ promise was such the elder Kendricks quit his job as Oxford’s coach, and at considerable risk, took a volunteer position with the University of Mississippi to coach his son and the other vaulters.

The move paid dividends immediately. During his sophomore year at Ole Miss, Sam made his biggest leap in ability, vaulting more than 19 feet, ¾ inches.

“It was a personal best by almost eight inches,” Sam recalled of the event at the 2013 Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. He went on to win an NCAA national championship that year.

The achievement underscored what could be accomplished by a once sub-par athlete and a volunteer coach with no pole-vault coaching experience whose pairing was subject to father-coaching-son pitfalls. There was plenty of upside as well, said Sam. “It kind of opened our eyes to say, ‘OK, we’re doing the right thing,’” said Sam. “If we keep honing that axe, making it sharper and tightening all the lose bolts of what makes me a great jumper and what we do that works, then we can go to great heights.”

Sam later propelled himself to the amateur athletic stratosphere, earning the 2013 and 2014 NCAA outdoor titles among other accolades. Feeling the need for greater

competition, Kendricks decided to leave the Ole Miss track and field program in 2014 to turn pro (he continued on as an ROTC student and engineering major, graduating in 2015). The elder Kendricks continued to coach him.

“I wanted to make a living in the sport,” he said.

That meant building notoriety.

The Olympics would help. He finished first at the Olympic trials and aimed his pole toward Rio. His father and girlfriend came along.

It was surreal, said Sam, pointing out winning the medal and standing atop the podium with millions watching was not the proverbial cherry-on-the-top moment for him.

“There was an internal victory and gratitude long before I stepped on the runway to compete,” he said. “I wondered, ‘If I won a medal, what would I do?’

I decided I was going to feel that way now. I’m going to really internalize what it means to be a winner and a loser and understand that neither of those matter.

It is my ability to compete. That’s most important, and I’m going to enjoy that.

“The time on the podium was for everyone else.”

Sam’s ability to capture perspective might serve him well as a BOLC student. He has given deep thought to what it means to be a leader and how his stature as a championship athlete might influence others.

“I think I can help Soldiers by helping to convey that short-term goals equate to long-term goals by emphasizing discipline and detail,” he said. “My mission as an athlete is to jump high, but my goal is to compete well. To do both, I must do the small things. I must get a little faster, get a little stronger and learn a little bit more. If I can do all those things every day, I can accomplish the mission.”

Kendricks is assigned to the 655th Trans. Company, 373rd Quartermaster Battalion, 38th Regional Support Group based in Millington, Tenn. He said the unit was more than supportive during his Olympic quest. Kendricks has his sights on the 2017 world championships in London.

For the 2016-2017 flu seasons, only injectable flu shots will be provided to Soldiers, DOD Civilians, family members and retirees. No live attenuated influenza vaccine, also known as Flu Mist, will be offered based on effectiveness recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.

Service members are strongly discouraged from receiving vaccines at outside facilities since this can potentially affect Fort Lee’s readiness numbers due to a delay in reporting to MEDPROS. In addition, service members should not receive Flu Mist at retail pharmacies

since TRICARE will not reimburse the purchase.

adults, people with chronic health conditions and young children – especially infants younger than six months old who are too young to get vaccinated. Also, vaccination has shown to make the flu milder, which may reduce the risk

of more serious flu outcomes such as hospitalizations.

Recycling Week set for Nov. 6-12 Fort Lee’s Directorate of Public Works is gearing up to celebrate National Recycling Week Nov. 6-12.

The DPW Environmental Management Division is partnering with the Operations and Maintenance Division to showcase the ongoing work of Fort Lee’s recycling program and highlight some new initiatives.

An event is set for Nov. 10, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the commissary to demonstrate a creative way to recycle plastic bags, hand out reusable shopping bags and 2017 calendar refrigerator magnets, and educate shoppers on Fort Lee’s updated recycling policy.

One of the most talked-about components of Recycling Week activities is the outreach of the Recycling Action Teams. These small groups of volunteers make visits to check the status of recycling operations at each building across post.

They inspect trash and recycling containers to ensure appropriate use, check the status of the building’s recycling plan (required by Fort Lee Policy 19-03), identify any deficiencies to the facility’s recycling coordinator, and educate occupants about changes to Fort Lee’s Mandatory Recycling Program. But don’t be scared, the RATs are only out to help occupants improve their recycling efficiency, not get anyone in trouble, according to DPW. Having a designated recycling coordinator and a recycling plan keeps tenants in compliance with Fort Lee policy, but also provides accountability and guidance for their recycling program. With a

Ann Robins, an employee at Fort Lee and member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 284, has the answer. She works with several other dedicated volunteers to hand-make sleeping mats for homeless veterans in the surrounding communities.

The mats are made entirely from recycled plastic bags, making them lightweight and waterproof. Bags are cut into strips, linked together into thick plastic yarn and crocheted into a dense fabric mat that can be rolled up and carried easily. This craft keeps plastic bags out of landfills and helps those less fortunate, making it a perfect service project for volunteer groups or youth seeking volunteer credit. Don’t know how to crochet? No problem! Help out by simply cutting the bags and tying them together to form the yarn. It’s an easy way to celebrate Recycling Week and make a difference in the Fort Lee community.
