Growing up, I always thought my dad was like a superhero. He is a strong, soft-spoken, hardworking Italian gentleman with many friends and a loving family. He is well-known in my hometown as “Jiggy.”

Of course, I’m older now but that hasn’t changed my admiration for “Super-Jiggy” in the least. On top of being a great “Papa Jiggs” to his grandchildren, he continues to amaze me with his strength of character. In recognition of the November observance of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month, let me

tell you about a situation that proves that point.

When you hear the words “You have cancer,” it is a shock and a scare. This happened to our family about two years ago when my dad went to the emergency room for a sharp pain in his lower back. He thought he strained it digging up a rose bush for my mom. It was confirmed by a CT scan the mass in his pancreas is cancer, and it is inoperable.

After a consultation with the oncologist, he began a regimen of chemotherapy, which has extended his quality of life. Due to healthy eating, routine exercise and a positive family support system, my dad is still enjoy-

ing his favorite activities – traveling, trips to the beach and going to the grandkid’s soccer games.

There are 53,000 people diagnosed annually with pancreatic cancer, and 47,000 of them do not survive the first year. Our story is a bit different since my dad is one of the few still living after two years.

Dealing with this illness has taught us a lot.

First, there are not a lot of preventive screenings for pancreatic cancer. Also, it is hard to detect and the early symptoms might not alert someone to seek a doctor. A good pancreatic cancer site is www.pancan.org. It provides information about early diagnosis, genetic testing, statistics and risks due to family history.

The last part is key. Three of my family members had cancer. It was ovarian for my grandmother, my grandfather had esophageal cancer and mother’s younger sister had colon

cancer. Knowing that history and the close connection of my dad’s illness is a warning sign for me as well as my family members to seek preventive screenings. It is important to take it seriously, ask questions and not ignore warning signs.

Everyone should look for these early indicators of cancer: changes in bowel or bladder habits, a sore that doesn’t heal, unusual bleeding or discharge, and lumps or thickened areas in the breast or testicles.

Today, there are many more resources available compared to our grandparent’s generation. Find out about preventive screenings, research, early detection, treatment, education and more at www.cancer.org. Remember, early detection is the best prevention.

More importantly, these no-shows reduced appointment availability, degraded access, and in many cases delayed care for assigned beneficiaries.

Those unable to keep scheduled appointments are asked to cancel them as soon as possible so the clinic can offer the time slot to another patient.

Kenner Army Health Clinic needs community support in reducing “no-shows” – missed appointments that were neither canceled nor rescheduled by those receiving care at the facility.

No-shows may seem trivial, but the financial implications are significant. A missed primary care appointment, for example, costs the health clinic $160 per visit in lost revenue. As more and more patients fail to show up for appointments, the price tag quickly increases, climbing into the hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.

Fort Lee plans festive grand illumination Fort Lee community members are cordially invited to the installation’s tree-lighting ceremony Dec. 1, 4:15 p.m., on the Lee Club lawn.

The annual Grand Illumination will feature music by the 392nd Army Band and carolers, free hot chocolate and cookies, train rides, pictures with Santa, and games for children such as ice fishing and a penguin fling.

“The illumination is a great time for the whole family,” said Bill Butcher, Family and MWR director here. “There is music and holiday treats, and the children really get excited when Santa arrives onboard the fire truck.”

and Fort Lee commanding general, and his wife Myra will flip the switch to officially light the festive evergreen. Following that, Santa will arrive promptly at 5 p.m.

“Out of all the events here, I find this one really brings Fort Lee families and the community together,” said Butcher. “Military members, family members, civilians, contractors and volunteers all do their part to bring the holiday spirit to Fort Lee. “Team Lee is truly visible during this event,” he continued.

“It’s great to see the community get together to kick off the holidays.”

The event is free and open to the public. The Lee Club lawn is located on the corner of Mahone Avenue and Battle Drive.

Fort Lee’s 23-member 392nd Army Band, including a brass quintet, will perform a rock-centric holiday concert Dec. 10-11, 3 p.m., at the Lee Theater.

It’s free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.

“The show is being offered two afternoons instead of one because it is going to be a big set-up,0” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Kevin L. Pick, the band’s director.

Pick explained this year is different for the band because they are working with half the members from last year’s performance. The band needed a diffrent format and chose to put on a “rock-band heavy” show.

This year’s creative team – band members Spc. Kari Boyer and Spc. Claude Lumley – developed the concept story and theme, a rock rendition of “The Nutcracker.”

“The music will be less traditional but more electronic with a heavy rock style,” Pick noted. “We are having a multimedia team come to help us with lights and sound effects.”

The concert will have projection mapping, using different backdrops and sets, all generated digitally.

There also will be lasers, fog and more.

Pick spoke of Spc. David Dormeus, who is a “fantastic arranger,” and created the storyline. He is running the show with the multimedia team.

“He has taken songs from the original and has rewritten them to his own version. All the songs are custom made for this production. The Electric Light Orchestra was his inspiration.”

“We invite the community to come out and enjoy the performance,” Pick said. “There will be some surprises, and the new technology features will add to the enjoyment by everyone.”

The band also will perform at Fort Lee’s Grand Illumination, Dec. 1, 4:15 p.m., on the Lee Club lawn.

Kenner Late Flu Clinic Update Kenner Army Health Clinic will no longer offer late flu clinic hours for adult beneficiaries after this week. The last clinic is Nov. 18, 4-6 p.m.

The late flu clinics for pediatric patients will not continue after Tuesday, Nov. 22, 4-6 p.m. Any family member who needs a flu vaccine can obtain one on a walk-in basis Monday-Friday, 7:30-11:30 a.m., and 1-3:30 p.m. Immunizations are not administered from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Chapel to launch Advent Series The Traditional Protestant congregation at Memorial Chapel invites all community members to a four-week “Gifts of Christmas” Advent Series that begins with its Nov. 27 worship service at 11 a.m.

Hope, love, joy and peace will be the focus areas of the series, according to Chaplain (Capt.) Tony Hunley, executive pastor of the congregation. He said the Christmas season is meant to be “the most wonderful time of the year,” in the words of a famous holiday song, but many lose sight of its significance amid commercialism, budget worries, hectic schedules and, for some, the emotional wounds of

loneliness, recent loss or other anxieties.

“Our focus is on the gift of Christmas itself,” Hunley said. “It offers a unique opportunity to experience God’s love and grace in the midst of real life. That is the reason for the series – to experience what the true gifts of this observance mean for our lives today.

“Advent itself is an opportunity to set aside time in which to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ,” the chaplain continued. “The relevant messages in this series are designed to help place the focus of the season on a far greater story than our own – the story of God’s redeeming love for

this world.”

Captains and majors looking to get a leg up on professional development need to look no further than the Training with Industry program offered by the proponency branch of their respective schools.

Lt. Col. Charlie Fisher is the chief of the Office of the Quartermaster General at CASCOM, and he and his staff handle the proponency aspects of the quartermaster career field, where they make sure slots are filled with the right people. They also coordinate career maps and credentialing for QM Soldiers.

Fisher and his office are spearheading an initiative to reinvigorate the quartermaster TWI program. As a former participant, he said he found it invaluable for his career and hoped other officers would look into the program. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In 2005, I went into the TWI program, and I had no idea how much they were going to hurt my head,â&#x20AC;? said Fisher of the intense coursework. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The first thing they do in the program is put you in the Army Force Management School and they teach you how the Army works. I learned a lot about the business aspect of the Army and how the money flows and who has the authority to do certain things.â&#x20AC;?

After a month of learning about the interworking of the service, Fisher attended the Logistics Management Institute in McLean â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a nonprofit thinktank of sorts that does government consulting. He said it helped teach him to solve big picture issues in the Army. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The perspectives and way of thinking coming out of TWI â&#x20AC;&#x201C; along with the utilization tour where you get to see something operational or strategic in higher headquarters â&#x20AC;&#x201C; really helped give me a distinct advantage when I returned to the tactical force,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They taught me to trace problems back to the root.â&#x20AC;?

Fisher said the program sets officers up for success and many of them get selected for the Battalion Command

Selection list, which only takes the top 20-25 percent of all officers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;TWI gives you a different perspective. It gives you a broader strategic view, and I believe that strategic view turns into success as a major doing key developmental jobs,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As far as the battalion command selection list or battalion command, it gives you a competitive advantage, because you understand the bigger picture. Nine times out of 10, if you can understand the intent higher than you, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to be successful.â&#x20AC;?

Around 16 officers are selected for this program annually, with about four being selected from the QM School, Ordnance School, Transportation School and Logistics Proponency office. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To be chosen, you have to come out of company command doing very well,â&#x20AC;? said Fisher. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very selective process.â&#x20AC;?

Col. Karen Wrancher, now serving as the branch chief for preliminary investigations at the U.S. Army Inspector General Agency, was selected for the program in 2002 and also went through LMI, although there are several different programs used each year. She said she gained valuable knowledge during it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I learned the success of our military is not only based on the kinetic fight but also the great tacticians who could envision the entire operational theater. You need time to just stay still and think,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to think about how logistics and timing as well as when critical supplies arrive have an impact on the outcome of a battle and war. I also learned about the military industrial complex and how requirements and needs of our sister services are connected to companies that we need to galvanize resources if and when we need to surge our forces at time of war or conflict.â&#x20AC;?

The opportunity was a blessing, said Wrancher. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I learned about force design, acquisition, budgeting and so much more,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I did my follow-on assignment at J-4 in the

Pentagon, I understood the terms senior leaders used and how the Army runs.â&#x20AC;?

Lt. Col. Brian Olson, who attended the program in 2004-2005, said the program absolutely helped him get a leg up on others. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This unique broadening opportunity set the foundation for my success on the Army Staff at the G-4, Headquarters Department of the Army, and the Joint Staff in writing joint doctrine, as well as theater operational positions such as in International Security Assistance Force headquarters as the executive assistant to the Commander ISAFâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s operations officer,â&#x20AC;? said Olson, who currently works as the senior sustainment observer/controller at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, La. He also said he appreciated the scope of opportunities offered. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some of the most valuable training included the Army Force Management Course â&#x20AC;&#x201C; â&#x20AC;&#x153;How the Army Runsâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; working with program managers and program executive offices on logistics technologies, blueprinting procedures for our new enterprise resource planning tool, working with former senior logistics officers in the Pentagon or supporting current programs,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The program provided broadened perspective of the Army and DODâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strategic force management structure and methods, acquisition processes, current and future logistics information systems, and the inner workings of our budgeting and resourcing cycle within the Pentagon.â&#x20AC;?

Wrancher â&#x20AC;&#x201C; who previously served as the chief of the Office of the Quartermaster â&#x20AC;&#x201C; said the program is important for the QM Corps and its officers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Having participated in TWI and appreciating what I learned as an Army professional was a critical factor in knowing how to reinvigorate the QM slots for officers,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;TWI enables young officers to truly start to see and understand the Army and what we do on a strategic level.â&#x20AC;?

This installment of the Historic Photo of the Month looks back to 1918 and the post office operation at Camp Lee. “Estimated receipt of letters at Camp Lee each day has been placed at 25,000. To distribute this mail among the boys in camp is no small undertaking, and the handling requires a considerable force, as shown in the accompanying picture, taken with the clerks standing on the rear platform of the post office building.”

This is the first paragraph in an edition of the weekly newspaper, the Bayonet. It appeared under

the headline “Scenes at Post Office in Camp Lee.” “Tired and worn lieutenants on mustering detail point with sorrow to the long line of waiting men to be ‘signed up’ and answer in one voice, ‘Here.’ The supply and mess officers woefully direct the attention of the questioner to the pile of unissued equipment or to the unmade-up ration returns, and moanfully answer, ‘Here,’ while

the adjutants and the commanding officers conduct the inquirer to the bustling headquarters buildings and with a why-ask-foolishquestions expression, state, ‘Here.’

“But no matter how busy every officer and enlisted man in camp considers himself today, let him receive a nice long letter from home or somewhere else, and then think for a moment how that letter found him, out of 25,000 others.

Truckloads of mail “Four times a day, one of the big Army trucks pulls up and stops outside the post office. The men get busy and within 15 minutes the load of from 50 to 85 mail sacks, each weigh-

ing in the neighborhood of 100 pounds has been carried into the building.

Within another hour, the contents have been emptied, and the 15 clerks are busy sorting out the letters and bundles assigned to the men in various organizations and again dumping them into mail sacks for delivery at the regimental post offices. It takes some time, too, and for that reason the rather small force is kept working hard all during the day and late into the night.

“Some mother back home, with the thought of her boy’s certainly having made himself known at camp by this time, casually directs her letter to ‘Mr. John Doe, Camp Lee, Petersburg,’ and drops it in the mail box – the result being that when the hurried clerk comes to the letter, he throws it in a separate pile and gives it no more attention.

“We have two missions – animal care and food inspection,” he said, “and we have two MOSs – animal care specialist and food inspection specialist.”

specialists, said the food inspection mission requires Soldiers to visit the various food-serving establishments here and elsewhere on a weekly basis.

“They inspect the food at all dining facilities, the shoppette, Burger King – any place selling food on post,” he said. “They check for food quality, where it originates, how it’s stored and how it’s handled.”

Another set of Soldiers work exclusively out of the commissary performing the same tasks but it is much more voluminous, said Spc. Tyler L. Davis.

During the conduct of his duties inspecting food at installation facilities, 22-year-old Pfc. Markell McKee said his job is anything but routine.

“Some days there may be be one or two inspections, but some days you can have as many as

seven inspections when we have to visit the dining facilities,” said the Savannah, Ga., native.

McKee’s tasks include checking expiration dates, approved source lists and for recalls at 54 facilities located on four installations.

Recalls are especially critical because products can make the list at any time and sometimes

requires immediate action to ensure it does not reach customers or consumers.

“You don’t want anyone to buy that product and get sick the next day,” he said.

Mckee cited the recent recall of products belonging to a popular ice cream brand as an example of how critical his job is.

“Hundreds of people got sick

from Listeria, and it happened because someone didn’t act fast enough,” he said.

Listeria and similar foodborne illnesses are capable of affecting military readiness on large scales, said McKee. Mbugua, an inspector for 13 years, said aside from the level

The Army Logistics University Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention team partnered with Virginia Commonwealth University on a talk titled “Love and Liquor” held in ALU’s Green Auditorium Nov. 9.

The presentation was given by Linda Hancock, director of the VCU Wellness Resource Center.

She spoke on different perspectives and trends she obtained from surveys. The program educated ALU students and staff about how her students correlate with Army recruits.

During the program, the audience used a classroom response system known as “clickers” to receive immediate feedback. The response generated a percentage on the screen. The clickers were brought by Hancock to collectively show what is real and not real.

Hancock said, “When you look around the room, you think everybody is doing something, but what are they really doing? I am excited to get new data from you today.”

The program started off with some lighthearted humor to get people engaged.

“What color is this paper towel?” Everyone in the audience said, “White.” “What color is this screen?” Everyone said “White.”

“What color is inside this red solo cup?” All said, “White.” “What do cows drink?” The audience yelled out “milk.” Hancock, said, “Actually water.”

“In America, we say to young people, don’t drink, don’t drink, and don’t drink. We put them in a little mental rut. Letting them think that everyone drinks, but do they? Same with our culture Don’t have sex, don’t have sex, but I’m sure everyone is getting it

but us, right?”

The clickers were used to prove a point about perception.

For instance, on how many people in the room were smoking cigarettes daily? The participants in the room had guessed a target range on what they thought the answer could be. Then she asked if anyone in the room was a daily smoker, to answer yes or no. The results were not what was expected.

“I speak to 10 different campuses across Virginia and the daily incoming smoking rate from freshman is about five percent,” she said. “You guys are at 10 percent. We over estimate on how many people smoke.”

Next she asked, which is worst, hookah or cigarettes? Again, people were shocked to find out it was hookah.

“Hookah smoke is one of the most toxic smokes known to man,” she said. “So, if you care about the physical health of your recruits, they need to run miles, and they are going off post.

Hookah, seriously, is one of the worst things they can do.”

Another question was asked about how many drinks do you have a month. After everyone clicked in, most were astonished to find out the percentage was 0-5 a month. “There are a million reasons why people drink less than you think,” she said.

“I think every young person in America should have a clicker session,” she said. “Research shows if they think everybody else is doing it, even if they don’t agree with it, they are more likely to do it to fit in. They would rather be normal and unhealthy than healthy and abnormal.”

On the overhead screen, a slide listed norms with a picture of butterflies. Some butterflies were blue and stood out. “It is always the behavior that sticks out.

“The worst thing you can do is reinforce this perception,” she said. “If you go around saying I know everybody drinks because you get the headaches from the ones causing a problem in the bars. However, if you say you are normalizing something that is not true, people make a variety of choices from not drinking at all, to drinking a lot, and there is a range. You have to choose what is right based on what is important to you. Not everybody drinks.”

Hancock said she talks to younger people on what she calls “Campbell’s Soup, Frosted Flakes and sex. Campbells Soup is mmm mmm good, Frosted Flakes are great, but sex is sacred, it doesn’t all wash in reviews. It brings lives into the planets, and changes the projectory on your lives, dreams and goals. So, do what you want, when you want with whom you want, but make sure you know how to do what you want. If those choices are taken away from you by sexual assault – I appreciate the work your advocates do here on post with helping you.”

“The world is changing and I believe the military is taking some of the lead with preventing sexual assault.”

She talked about research, which changed the mindset on some college campuses about sexual assault.”

The research was conducted

by Dr. David Lisak, a clinical psychologist who did a study on 1,800 college men in the Boston area. After his survey, he analyzed the data and found out 120 could be classified as rapists on how they answered the survey.

He further analyzed his data and found 44 men raped 44 women, and 76 men raped 439 women.

“What we have found to be true are most rapes occur from a serial rapist,” she said. “That is why I need all of your male recruits learning bi-standard skills. The point is, most rapists are professionals and know what they are doing, and they use alcohol as a weapon.”

She continued to talk about alcohol and underage drinking and making sure they know what the affects of drinking can do. “If an individual understands about alcohol, they would know if someone is overfeeding drinks to somebody to make them into a victim,” she said. “The person would be able to isolate the victim and take them away.”

Hancock explained about the alcohol limits and unit guidelines for men and women consumptions and the misrepresentation of the labeling on U.S. liquor.

“Why do we put unit measuring cups on tops of medicine bottles? So, we don’t hurt ourselves.” She showed one empty container of alcohol and said, “This one container kills at least

one college student every weekend. I am sure there are recruits dying as well. There is no unit dose measuring on the bottles, and I wish there was.”

Hancock ended the program by asking the audience what they thought was the most devastating drug out there?

“It is an idea. The one you like the best. It is what clicks in your genetic snowflake, brain and body. It is the one that needs the need in your life. It is the one your friends are doing. It depends on what culture you are in.

What is available as well.”

The presentation ended with available resources and how to build recovery support.

Sgt. 1st Class Hope Williams, ALU Sexual Assault Response coordinator, helped coordinate the presentation with VCU and found the training to be a good resource to have.

“Sexual assault is not just an Army problem,” Williams said.

“It is a problem in society. The more we realize and acknowledge it, the more partnerships like this can help.”

MOS physical fitness revisions continue FORT SILL, Okla. – The Army is continuing efforts to revise physical fitness standards for military occupational specialties.

Scientists from the Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine, Military Performance Division in Natick, Mass., tested Soldiers in advanced individual training at Fort Sill. They were given the new Occupational Physical Assessment Test during basic combat training 12 weeks earlier this year. One group was evaluated in June, and another in early July. A third and final group was tested in August.

The AIT Soldiers were tested in the new High Physical Demands Tasks required for graduation from AIT in a specific combat MOS such as field artillery. The initial

HPDT studies were completed June 2013 as part of the Soldier 2020 Gender-Neutral Physical Standards Study to determine tasks combat Soldiers would need to pass, depending on their MOS. This year the team was back to see how well the predictive OPAT test translates into higher performance on the HPDT. Dr. Bruce Cohen, one of the scientists administering the tests, said the standards will benefit all Soldiers. “It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female, you can either do the highest physical demand for your job, or you can’t,” he said. “So we’ll put the right person in the right job. They’ll perform better, maybe have less injuries and less turnover.”

About 12 of the five dozen Soldiers participating in the validation tests July 6-8 were women.

Because there aren’t enough females in the newly opened combat specialties to draw from, women volunteers training for other jobs also elected to be part of the study.

The validation test is also being conducted at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Fort Benning, Ga., because they train infantry, armor, and combat engineers. “This is going to be very important for the future of the Army,” said Peter Frykman, Military Performance

Division, ARIEM. “Soldiers walk around with a lot more load than in the past.”

The scientists are careful to eliminate as many variables as possible at each test site, and to re-create the testing scenarios as closely as possible from one installation to another.

For all the tests the Soldiers wore a full fighting load of about 70 pounds, consisting of a helmet, a Camelbak water pouch, a fighting load carrier for ammunition and grenades, and body armor.

Each Soldier had an orange folder in which scientists recorded the test results for each task. After the validation testing is complete, ARIEM will evaluate the data and make recommendations to TRADOC on how well the OPAT predicted HPDT success.

Once fully approved the OPAT will be required for all new

Soldiers joining the Army, and all Soldiers switching MOS from a low physical demand job to a higher physical demand job.

It is expected that AREIM will finish the testing and data collection at all locations by the end of the month. It expects to send initial results to TRADOC for review in January.

The OPAT is in final approval process with senior Army leadership, and it is expected to become a requirement for all new recruits in fiscal 2017. New recruits will be required to take and pass the OPAT, at the level of their MOS, prior to shipping from home to Initial Entry Training. The Army believes this will help raise their level of fitness and make them more prepared to meet the challenges of basic combat training.

Nancy Bainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recent retirement was much like her 62-years of service to the Quartermaster Corps and Team Lee. She chose to remain a quiet professional â&#x20AC;&#x201C; out of the spotlight and satisfied by deeds, not accolades.

It would be inappropriate, however, to not recognize what Bain has done over much of her lifetime for this installation and the many Soldiers and family members who served here. The community should be aware of the dedication she demonstrated as not only a civil service employee but also a subsequent 20-year volunteer with the QM Foundation.

Robert Barrett, a quartermaster officer who held several key staff positions here over his 30-year military career. He now serves as the QM Foundation president. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nancy was, without a doubt, the best known civilian employee and family advocate throughout the Quartermaster Corps,â&#x20AC;?

Barrett said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Because of her efforts over many years, Fort Lee became known as the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;family postâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; where every Soldier wanted to be. Even in the lean days when Army families were not always shown the recognition they deserved, she was deeply involved in fighting for everything she could get for them.â&#x20AC;?

The awards Bain accumulated speak to her tenacity. In 1986, she received the TRADOC Outstanding Division Chief Award. In 1987 she was recognized for her record-breaking success as chairman of the Fort Lee Combined Federal Campaign. In 1991, she received a commanderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s award

for outstanding service in support of operations Desert Shield/Storm. In June 1993, she was recognized as a Distinguished Member of the Quartermaster Regiment, and in June 2014 she was inducted into the Quartermaster Hall of Fame.

While acknowledging the significance of those honors, Bain would be the first to say theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not the hallmarks of her career. The 82-year-old still views the opportunity to help families as her â&#x20AC;&#x153;fondest memory and greatest reward.â&#x20AC;? The stand-out moments of her service, she said, include the times when troops returned home from deployment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was always wonderful to see them reunited with their families,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Retiring from civil service in 1995, Bain became a QM Foundation volunteer, serving as vice president for administration.

For the next two decades, her efforts in that role directly influenced multiple improvements to the QM Museum and continued her contributions to the Fort Lee community.

The QM Corpsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; thanks also go to Bainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s husband, Warren, and their children â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Preston, Chip and Sara. In her words, they will now receive â&#x20AC;&#x153;undivided attentionâ&#x20AC;? as she makes yet another transition in life; this time focused on her family.

To raise awareness about the importance of infection prevention, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology is highlighting ways to reduce infections with this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s theme, Breaking the Chain of Infection. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Breakingâ&#x20AC;? illustrates ways in which the public and health care professionals can interrupt the chain of infection in health care settings.

Health care-associated infections are linked to an estimated 75,000 deaths and lead to approximately $33 billion in excess medical costs in the U.S.,

according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So, it is important to understand how we can do our part to break the chain.

People first need to understand how germs spread. The following things are needed. â&#x20AC;˘ Infectious agents.

These include germs, bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. â&#x20AC;˘ A reservoir. This is where these agents live such as dirty surfaces, equipment, people, water, animals, insects and soil. â&#x20AC;˘ A portal of exit.

How did the germ leave its location? This can include open wounds, skin, splatter of body fluids and aerosols â&#x20AC;&#x201C; sneezing and coughing.

â&#x20AC;˘ A mode of transmission. An infectious agent travels through direct or indirect contact with another infectious agent.

This can include hands, ingestion or inhalation of the infectious agent. â&#x20AC;˘ A portal of entry.

Breaking this chain of infection includes many things.

McKee agreed but also said the job’s obscurity and the anonymity associated with it are alluring.

“It’s an important job that no one knows about,” he said, “but it’s secret-agenttype stuff. We’re in the shadows.”

There are also other benefits to being a food inspector. The 29-year-old Davis said he enjoys the autonomy afforded Soldiers at his rank. Mbugua said he likes the fact the job can take him almost anywhere within the Department of Defense.

Jill Stephenson, mother of Cpl. Benjamin S. Kopp who died from injuries sustained in Afghanistan in 2009, admires a Fallen Soldier Donor Memorial unveiled in her sonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s honor at the United Network for Organ Sharing in Richmond Nov. 10. Kopp was a member of the 75th Army Ranger Regiment and saved six of his comrades when his unit came under small arms attack by insurgents. He later died at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Bethesda, Md. Although mortally wounded, the Rosemount, Minn., native, â&#x20AC;&#x153;saved or enhanced the lives of 60 more people in the United States through his selďŹ&#x201A;ess gift of organ donation,â&#x20AC;? according to remarks delivered at the unveiling ceremony. The statue depicts a Soldier holding dog tags in cupped hands. A companion plaque will hang at Landstuhl Military Hospital in Germany. Gov. Terry McAuliffe was among a group of speakers, including Stephenson, at the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s National Donor Memorial Garden. The memorial honors Soldiers, past and present, who have made organ and tissue donation. It was nearly four years in the making, and was the idea of Gary Foxen, an Air Force veteran and a lung recipient. Foxen met Corporal Koppâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother, in 2011, when Kopp was honored as part of the annual Tournament of Roses Donate Life Float, an annual celebration of the gift of life also conceived by Foxen. Foxen, who died two years ago, lived for a number of years after receiving his transplant. The memorial is a gift from the OneLegacy Foundation, with additional support from Gary and Lois Foxen and a number of additional individual and corporate contributors. Ann Walsh, the memorialâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sculptor, said she wanted it to be â&#x20AC;&#x153;abstract and ethereal,â&#x20AC;? so she decided to make the statue hollow and see-through. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The lines echo the natural growth in the garden,â&#x20AC;? she added.
