Praise God for all the wonderful things that happened at Fort Lee in 2016.

I encourage community members to take a moment over the holiday break to consider the things that have made a positive impact on their life over the past year.

Perhaps it’s the opportunity to work at a refreshing and revitalizing post with orders to support the Army. Maybe it’s a promotion, or something personal like a new addition to the family or a new relationship.

Change is a fact of life for everyone, both military and civilian. Transitions happen to organizations as well. Learning to look at such things as opportunities in-

stead of burdens or disruptions can have a big impact on an individual’s or a group’s well-being.

It helps to remember that whenever there is change, God has His hand in it. He may challenge us, but it His way of building strength and testing our resolve. The Bible tells us that His ultimate goal is to bring about good. With faith, our hearts will be lifted, and we will not lose ourselves in the pit of despair.

One source of optimism for me is recalling the list of motivational prayers I remember seeing on my grandmother’s refrigerator. They had been there since 1945, and she used them to not only remember God’s place in her life, but also to keep track of her weekly chores. In a way, they

are as relevant now as they were back then.

Let’s take the next week and set it aside for God’s use. How? Just follow these simple steps: • Make Monday wash day – “O God, help me wash away all my selfishness and vanity so I may serve you with perfect humility through the week ahead.”

• Make Tuesday ironing day – “O God, help me iron out all the wrinkles of prejudice I have collected through the years, so I may see the beauty in others.”

• Make Wednesday mending Day – “O God, help me mend my ways, so I will not set a bad example for others.”

• Make Thursday cleaning day – “O God, help me to dust out all the many faults I have been hiding in the secret corners of my heart.”

• Make Friday shopping day – “O God, give me the grace to shop wisely, so I may purchase using proper stewardship for myself and all others in need of help.

• Make Saturday baking day – “Help me, my Savior, to bake big loaves of fresh

bread full of warm comfort showing brotherly love and serve it with the clean, sweet honey of human kindness.”

• Make Sunday the Lord’s day – “O God, I have prepared my house for you.

Please come into my heart, so I may spend the day and the rest of my life in your presence.”

Christian author J.M. Barry is credited with the following quote: “Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.” It speaks to the importance of maintaining a more positive outlook, and what better time to begin or continue that journey than these Holy days of December?

Always remember also, you are not alone. The Fort Lee Religious Support Team is ready to encourage and build up those in need. In today’s on-the-go society, not fully clearing vehicle windows and mirrors of snow, ice or frost is a growing concern – one that could have consequences for an individual’s auto insurance.

Many jurisdictions are clamping down on peephole driving, as being unable to clearly see the road boosts the potential for auto accidents and auto insurance claims.

Knowing the risk associated with this issue, Fort Lee community members should take action to avoid becoming part of the

As winter tightens its grip on Central Virginia, motorists will frequently face frosty windows and mirrors, especially during their morning commute.

Attempting to operate a vehicle that is frost-covered is like putting a blanket over the windows and trying to peek through the cracks. The notion seems ludicrous, but consider the similarity to a blanket of frost and a driver squinting through the small area of windshield hurriedly cleared with an ice scraper. This careless practice routinely happens on our

freezing. A few sprays on the windshield should soften stubborn ice patches. And it’s a good idea, of course, to keep the fluid reservoir full, but don’t use regular water as it’s susceptible to freezing.

• If the vehicle is equipped with a rear-window defroster, use it. Many forget the feature exists or fail to activate it before heading out on the road.

• Use a can of deicer or an ice scraper to clear outside mirrors, if not equipped with defrosters. Be sure to clear both the driver and passenger mirrors.

A Fort Lee transportation company signed a memorandum of agreement with a local middle school during a short meet and greet Tuesday.

The 2nd Staff and Faculty Company, 71st Transportation Battalion, adopted J.E.J. Moore Middle School in Prince George County. Capt.

Jacques Kassa, 2nd S&F Co. commander, and Stephanie Bishop, principal of the school, signed the memo that represented the commitment between the two organizations.

Also in attendance were David Koleda, deputy to the Chief of Transportation; 1st Sgt. Rubin Chery, 2nd S&F Co. first sergeant; Sgt. 1st Class Randall Reed, compny operations

NCO; Chaundra Taswell, Fort Lee’s School Liaison Officer; and several leaders from the Prince George County School District.

Bishop said she is very excited to expand the military support program at her school.

“We’ve always appreciated our partnership with Fort Lee, and this just strengthens that effort,” she said. “We are so excited to have the Soldiers involved and interacting with our students.”

One of the ways the company will be involved is a monthly program called Wednesday Greeters, where unit Soldiers will be at the school to welcome the students and interact with the them.

“I think it’s a great program,” said Bishop. “It’s so important to get their day started with positive interaction with adults.”

Connecting military units and the community is important to show support for each other, said Kassa.

“It’s always good to put together the community we serve and the military,” said Kassa. “For us, it’s giving back to our community and letting them know we’re here for them. It’s also showing them we are involved in the schools.

“Having a partnership with a school is a big deal for us,” he continued. “In the military, we emphasize military and civilian education. To be able to come here and serve a school is one way to show our community that we recognize their support and give back to them.”

Koleda said he attended to show support to the Transportation Team.

During the holiday period, thousands of students and cadre will depart Fort Lee for the purpose of taking a break from the daily regimen of military life.

Many, however, are not able to take leaves and will spend the next few weeks here.

For them, the Holiday Block Leave program might be just the ticket to combat holiday doldrums.

Just ask Capt. Courtney Reynolds, commander, Uniform Company, 262nd Quartermaster

Battalion. Her unit was selected to administer the HBL program for the 23rd QM Brigade. She said a variety of events are on tap to keep military members engaged.

“The schedule is designed to cover the full Soldier concept,” she said. “So, there will be Warrior Tasks and Battle Drills instruction that will take place as well as lifelong learning sessions.”

WTBDs are field and survival tasks common to all Soldiers.

Lifelong learning includes training and instruction on subjects related to financial readiness, physical fitness, and wellness and military benefits, said Reynolds,

“The goal is to establish a positive relationship,” he said, “especially with the high risk population. Our goal is to maintain an open door, as the holidays can typically bring on additional

A variety of leisure activities are slated for participants.

Reynolds said there are trips to entertainment venues on and off the installation to include a Virginia Commonwealth University basketball game.

“We also have a New Year’s Day party planned,” said Reynolds, noting some restrictions will be in place to comply with Army policies.

Paintball, bowling, a movie night at the Lee Theater and

we thought the signing ceremony would be a great opportunity to advance our program and support the school.”

Taswell also touted the Adopt-A-School program and the benefit it provides.

“It facilitates units partnering with schools,” she said. “The company contacted me and told me they were interested in participating in the program.

So here we are doing this great thing for the school.”

Fort Lee recently became involved with the Adopt-a- School program and J.E.J. Moore is the 5th that has been adopted by a unit, said Taswell.

“I’ve talked to several school administrators and several have expressed interest in a unit adopting them,” she said. “When a company contacts me, I find a good match for both. If they are looking for a partner, I’ll connect them.”

Although HBL officially starts Saturday, departure and return times will vary throughout the next two-and-a-half weeks.

Changes to Gate Hours During Holiday Season Fort Lee’s Temple Avenue Gate will be closed Dec. 19 - Jan. 2, and the Visitor Control Center at Lee Gate will close two hours early over the Christmas and New Year’s holiday weekends. The hours at all other access control points will remain unchanged.

Ordnance Campus workers scheduled to work over the holiday break can use the 24-hour Sisisky Boulevard Gate and the flyover bridge along 11th Street to reach their duty locations. On Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, only the Lee Avenue and Sisisky Boulevard gates will be open. The Jackson Circle Gate is restricted to that housing area’s residents and guests. The normal Lee Gate and Visitor Control Center weekend and federal holiday hours are 6 a.m. - 11 p.m. Over Christmas and New Year’s weekend, the VCC will close at 9 p.m.

MLK Jr. observance set for Jan. 12 at theater The Fort Lee community is invited to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 12, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., during an observance at the Lee Theater.

The annual program will be hosted by the 71st Transportation Battalion and the Installation Equal Opportunity Office.

Capt. Christopher Harrington, the lead planning officer for the event and commander, Staff and Faculty Company, 71st Transportation Bn., said the ceremony honors the life of King and he encouraged the community to attend.

“I believe Dr. King’s vision of equality is reflected in our military culture,” he said. “Our aim is to educate and inspire the audience. It’s important our leaders are reminded that through equal opportunity we can continue to build and sustain winning teams.”

The guest speaker for the program is Claiborne Douglass Haughton Jr., former acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Equal Opportunity.

Throughout a decorated 35-year career dedicated to the pursuit of affirmative action, equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion for Department of Defense military and civilian personnel worldwide and

at DOD contractors’ facilities, Haughton pioneered and developed innovative and instrumental programs, creating access where none existed before.

A special guest – retired Sgt. Maj. Rahsan Mitchell – will perform some prose that will captivate audiences, said Harrington. The program also will include the 392nd Army Band, an inspiring song, dramatic recitation and informative displays.

The long-running theme for the MLK remembrance is “Remember! Celebrate!

Act! A Day On, Not A Day Off.” This observance is important to remember King’s legacy, said Harrington.

Park vehicles left outdoors overnight so they will receive the first rays of morning sun. Another useful tool is wind; find parking spaces where a regular breeze is blowing across the windshield.

Remember also that cold weather is hard on vehicle components. Do not race the engine in an attempt to get it to warm up quicker. Keep the fuel tank as full as possible to reduce moisture condensing inside fuel lines and freezing. Use gasoline antifreeze or other additives to remove water from the fuel system.

Carbon monoxide is another concern during winter months. Never idle an engine for a prolonged period with windows rolled up, particularly if snow is covering the exhaust pipe. Listen for exhaust leaks and promptly repair defective components. Do not sleep in a running vehicle, and do not warm up a vehicle while it’s inside a garage.

The bottom line is to think safety first, and always, with winter driving. Setting the conditions for a safe commute, slowing down and being prepared for reduced visibility due to weather or longer hours of darkness are some of the best ways to avoid becoming an accident statistic.

This installment of Historic Photo of the Month looks back to 1917 and some levity by Camp Lee Soldiers who used their own military slang.

“Camp Lee has a language all its own. Or rather it is rapidly adopting a language used almost exclusively by Uncle Sam’s fighting men on land.”

This is the first paragraph of an article in The Bayonet, the camp’s weekly newspaper. It appeared under the headline “Slang phrases and their meaning as used by men at Camp Lee.” “The story is told that in one command at the camp a single company had men who spoke 16 different tongues. Many of them could not recognize their own names when at roll call, and when they had signed the pay roll, they could not recall the signature the following day.

“This was all due to the hundreds of foreign born men sent to camp from

the mining and manufacturing regions in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

However, the language, which is common in camp and which visitors may not understand, is hereinafter translated: “B-ache – to complain.

Beans – the commissary sergeant.

Bean-shooter – a commissary officer.

Belly-ache – to complain.

Black strap – liquid coffee.

Blind – sentenced by court-martial to forfeiture of pay without confinement.

Transporters train up on casualty evacuations The 508th Transportation Company, 266th Quartermaster Battalion, broke away from its usual mission of transporting troops and equipment for training here to preparing its Soldiers for the operational Army.

The unit conducted a Casualty Evacuation Exercise Dec. 7 at Training Area 17 in conjunction with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 169th Aviation Regiment

based in Chesterfield County.

For the training, 508th Soldiers were briefed on mission and aircraft capabilities, and taught how to perform tactical combat casualty care, how to load casualties on the aircraft and how to communicate medical emergencies to aircraft personnel.

Capt. Aishah R. Mujahid, 508th company commander, said casualty evacuation is one of many skills

Soldiers don’t often get to use while assigned to units in the institutional Army, but it is required in field units and combat environments.

“The realistic training received by the Soldiers will surely help them grasp the medical evacuation concept and ensure they are prepared for the operational Army,” she said.

Did the Army fulfill your expectations? â&#x20AC;&#x153;In some ways â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;yesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and some ways â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;no.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; It didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t because what it actually is and how it is advertised are two different things. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advertised in a way that seems like it is glorious. The way it has fulfilled my life â&#x20AC;&#x201C; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brought that sense of security in relation to the financial realm â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I know my rent is going to be paid, and I know Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have food on the table.â&#x20AC;?

Among all the services, why you chose the Army: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I chose the Army because you could pick your job. I went to the others and they said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;You have to take this test, and then weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll kind of stick you where we want you.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like that. I wanted to pick my job. I wanted to know what kind of job I was going to have. The Army gave

me a whole list. I have a religious background; I saw chaplainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s assistant; I thought it would be a good match.â&#x20AC;?

You chose to be a chaplainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s assistant because ... : â&#x20AC;&#x153;Honestly, it was not by my will because there were other jobs the recruiter was pushing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; chaplainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s assistant, watercraft operator and 42A (human resources specialist). I went home that night, prayed to God and said â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;which one opens first is the one Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m taking.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; I got a text message the next day. The chaplainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s assistant job was open. It was a nobrainer.â&#x20AC;?

What most Soldiers do not know about the Chaplain Corps: â&#x20AC;&#x153;People look at a chaplainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s assistant and go, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Well, what do you do?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s different. Think about it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; your immediate supervisor is not an NCO â&#x20AC;&#x201C; he or she is a chaplain.

That relationship with you and the chaplain is different than a normal Soldier-officer relationship. You are working so close with each other every day so the relationship is much different. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the biggest thing. The other thing is the extra hours. People think you kind of do the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;9-5â&#x20AC;&#x2122; and go home. Well, we work just as much as Soldiers in the other MOSs. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just not seen.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

What youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve learned: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve learned people really enjoy something called active listening. We hear about that in some of our training. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know about before the Army.

When you do it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; when you pay

attention and respond to people and what they have to say â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it actually helps people when you listen to their problems and give them feedback; actually engage people.

It shows you care.â&#x20AC;?

One responsibility when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re deployed with a chaplain: â&#x20AC;&#x153;My job is to carry the M-16. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a non-combatant and does not carry a weapon, so Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m basically a bodyguard in that sense.â&#x20AC;?

What it means to serve: â&#x20AC;&#x153;It means putting others before yourself, being engaged and putting out that helping hand to someone who needs it.â&#x20AC;?

Best thing about the Army: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Working with many different people with different backgrounds â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the diversity. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never experienced that, staying in one city my entire life; then, you come to the Army where you have different people, different countries, states and cities.â&#x20AC;?

Worst thing about the Army: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unpredictable. Not necessarily here, but if you go to a Forces Command unit, you can get deployed and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see your family for a year.â&#x20AC;?

Future plans: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m in college, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to finish my degree in religious studies while Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m in the Army. From there, a year before I reenlist, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll make the decision either to stay or join the civilian world. Holiday Helper draws crowd of VIPs Lesley Atkinson Family/Community Life Reporter

“A lot of children would not have a merry Christmas were it not for the effort of all of you here today. You have no idea – to imagine not having presents under the tree. You are going to bring some light and happiness to this very important holiday.”

Those are words from Governor Terry McAuliffe spoken at this year’s Holiday Helper open house Friday at the organization’s toy store on Battle Drive.

Others who stopped in for a visit were first lady Dorothy McAuliffe and Virginia Delegate Riley Ingram. Representatives from local businesses such as VDOT, DMV, and Keller Williams are a few who visited to be paired with a Soldier to pick out toys and help with gift wrapping in the 3,200-square foot permanent housing toy store.

The Holiday Helper is run by seven board members and has hundreds of volunteers and donors who make it all come together.

The program helps relieve the financial burden and stress on military families by providing gifts to their children during the holiday season. The program doles out toys for about 1,200 military children each year.

John Hall, deputy to the commanding general, CASCOM, spoke during the Holiday Helper kick-off and said, “You can’t have a ready Army if you can’t take care of your Soldiers. There is not a better example than this project we have here. Like the song, ‘It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,’ we are able to make it more of a special occasion for many children when they wake up on December 25th. Thanks to this military program, no child will go without.”

In her third time visiting the Holiday Helper event, Dorothy McAuliffe finds it an incredible mission to benefit the military families.

“They deserve every bit we can give them,”

she said. “I want to commend the leadership here on post, the volunteers and the board members for their dedication. I was able to take some of our Soldiers through to pick out toys; they were just overwhelmed at the opportunity to have a little extra for their children.

This event kicks off my holiday to be able to see so many giving back and the joy of those who receive.”

Myra Williams, wife of Maj. Gen. Darrell K. Williams, CASCOM and Fort Lee commanding general, said this was her second year volunteering and she believes Holiday Helper is a wonderful way for the community to help the military.

“So many of our Soldiers don’t have the opportunity to be recognized in such a personal way,” she said. “It’s a great way for the community to reach out and try to make a difference in a Soldier’s life. By taking the people in the community and meshing with our military, we have been able to create a wonderful balance. It is a lot of work and love that has been placed into this; you can’t ask for anything more at this time of the year.”

During the shopping days, 250 Soldiers each day will have the opportunity to go through and pick out toys for their children. This year, more than 83 bikes were donated, and newly decorated trees were displayed throughout the store.

The newest tree this year is the Hope tree and Gov. McAuliffe added his hope for a “safe return” for the Soldiers.

The 59th Ordnance Brigade has taken the standard holiday safety briefing to a new level.

During Wednesday’s early-morning physical training session on the Ordnance Campus, hundreds of Soldiers received words of advice from the brigade commander and others encouraging safe behaviors over the course of the holiday season.

The words, however, were only a prelim to a more comprehensive safety message.

No, not as in a PowerPoint presentation or anything of the like, but in the form of cadre who acted out risky behaviors at various points on the PT route as the formations trotted along.

Col. Sean P. Davis, the brigade commander, said actions are stronger than words and the

presentations were meant to provide Soldiers with a greater understanding of holiday safety.

“It was a different way of doing a safety brief for sure,” he said. “The visuals cater to a new generation of Soldiers who are accustomed to imagery. It is a creative way of showing them failures in safety and how rational thinking can help to avert mishaps while they’re on leave.”

Among the presentations was cadre member sitting in a canoe on a small pond, having had too much to drink; Soldiers acting as law enforcement officials and reprimanding violators for drunk driving; and a noncommissioned officer dressed in skiwear, demonstrating what could happen to snow boarders when they fall short of proper preparations.

To further drive their point home, several of the cadre used bullhorns to broadcast sensible advice.

“A lot of children would not have a merry Christmas were it not for the effort of all of you here today. You have no idea – to imagine not having presents under the tree. You are going to bring some light and happiness to this very important holiday.”

Those are words from Governor Terry McAuliffe spoken at this year’s Holiday Helper open house Friday at the organization’s toy store on Battle Drive.

Others who stopped in for a visit were first lady Dorothy McAuliffe and Virginia Delegate Riley Ingram. Representatives from local businesses such as VDOT, DMV, and Keller Williams are a few who visited to be paired with a Soldier to pick out toys and help with gift wrapping in the 3,200-square foot permanent housing toy store.

The Holiday Helper is run by seven board members and has hundreds of volunteers and donors who make it all come together.

The program helps relieve the financial burden and stress on military families by providing gifts to their children during the holiday season. The program doles out toys for about 1,200 military children each year.

John Hall, deputy to the commanding general, CASCOM, spoke during the Holiday Helper kick-off and said, “You can’t have a ready Army if you can’t take care of your Soldiers. There is not a better example than this project we have here. Like the song, ‘It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,’ we are able to make it more of a special occasion for many children when they wake up on December 25th. Thanks to this military program, no child will go without.”

In her third time visiting the Holiday Helper event, Dorothy McAuliffe finds it an incredible mission to benefit the military families.

“They deserve every bit we can give them,”

she said. “I want to commend the leadership here on post, the volunteers and the board members for their dedication. I was able to take some of our Soldiers through to pick out toys; they were just overwhelmed at the opportunity to have a little extra for their children.

This event kicks off my holiday to be able to see so many giving back and the joy of those who receive.”

Myra Williams, wife of Maj. Gen. Darrell K. Williams, CASCOM and Fort Lee commanding general, said this was her second year volunteering and she believes Holiday Helper is a wonderful way for the community to help the military.

“So many of our Soldiers don’t have the opportunity to be recognized in such a personal way,” she said. “It’s a great way for the community to reach out and try to make a difference in a Soldier’s life. By taking the people in the community and meshing with our military, we have been able to create a wonderful balance. It is a lot of work and love that has been placed into this; you can’t ask for anything more at this time of the year.”

During the shopping days, 250 Soldiers each day will have the opportunity to go through and pick out toys for their children. This year, more than 83 bikes were donated, and newly decorated trees were displayed throughout the store.

The newest tree this year is the Hope tree and Gov. McAuliffe added his hope for a “safe return” for the Soldiers.

The 59th Ordnance Brigade has taken the standard holiday safety briefing to a new level.

During Wednesday’s early-morning physical training session on the Ordnance Campus, hundreds of Soldiers received words of advice from the brigade commander and others encouraging safe behaviors over the course of the holiday season.

The words, however, were only a prelim to a more comprehensive safety message.

No, not as in a PowerPoint presentation or anything of the like, but in the form of cadre who acted out risky behaviors at various points on the PT route as the formations trotted along.

Col. Sean P. Davis, the brigade commander, said actions are stronger than words and the

presentations were meant to provide Soldiers with a greater understanding of holiday safety.

“It was a different way of doing a safety brief for sure,” he said. “The visuals cater to a new generation of Soldiers who are accustomed to imagery. It is a creative way of showing them failures in safety and how rational thinking can help to avert mishaps while they’re on leave.”

Among the presentations was cadre member sitting in a canoe on a small pond, having had too much to drink; Soldiers acting as law enforcement officials and reprimanding violators for drunk driving; and a noncommissioned officer dressed in skiwear, demonstrating what could happen to snow boarders when they fall short of proper preparations.

To further drive their point home, several of the cadre used bullhorns to broadcast sensible advice.

DSCR workers team up for Angel Tree toy drive RICHMOND – The chance to play Santa Claus created a great deal of excitement among Defense Logistics Agency Installation Support employees at the Defense Supply Center Richmond Nov. 8.

Throughout the workday, vehicles passed through the engine bays at the DSCR fire station to drop off toys for the 113 angels adopted from Chesterfield County and Richmond City Public Schools. The Supply Center takes pride in its 25-year history of supporting G. H. Reid, Bellwood, and Bensley elementary schools, and Meadowbrook High School, during the holidays.

This year’s gifts included clothes, bikes, books, dolls, action heroes and electronics, noted Amy Clement, chief of DLA Aviation’s Public Affairs Office.

“Because of the many ongoing construction projects and building renovations on DSCR, there didn’t appear to be any location to have a gift drop off this year,” she said. “I was in a meeting with DLA Installation Support leaders in October and was concerned about not having a location to hold the Angel Tree gift drop

off. Without hesitation, Fire Chief Don Rodgers offered the fire station.

“Chief Rodgers, his firefighters and paramedics went above and beyond in decorating truck bays and providing refreshments and candy canes to volunteers and employees as they came through to drop off their gifts,” Clement said.

Firefighters helped unload gifts and also took the opportunity to pass out holiday and winter weather safety literature.

Angel tree volunteers liked the new drive-thru setup so much, and the operation went so smoothly, Rodgers volunteered his facility again for next year.

“Hosting the drop off was a pleasure,” he said. “These guys (fire and emergency services personnel) always go above and beyond not only with fire and emergency issues, but in any way to help members of the community. We have always adopted and provided gifts, and when the need for a location and assistance with logistics came up, we knew it was the right thing to do to volunteer our help and this facility. It’s also a great opportunity to educate the workforce about holiday safety when

The Quartermaster School was established as a noncommissioned officer training center in Philadelphia, in 1910. In 1941 the school moved to Fort Lee with an expanded mission of training all Quartermaster Soldiers. On Dec. 7, the QM School celebrated its 75th anniversary here with a ceremony hosted at the Quartermaster Museum.

“Just think of the history. We have been training Quartermaster Soldiers for 75 years here at Fort Lee and Camp Lee, and they have been going out and doing great things for our Army,” said Brig.

Gen. Rodney Fogg, QM General and School commandant. “Fort Lee was, and still is, the centerpiece for Quartermaster training.”

One of the highlights of the

ceremony was the unveiling of a life-sized statue of Staff Sgt. Sidy Diallo, a logistics specialist who was previously stationed at Fort Lee. Diallo was one of five Soldiers who went to New York City to be cast for full-body molds that would become statues displayed throughout the museum. His statue represents all Quartermasters and is located at the entrance of the museum.

“Remembering those Soldiers who sacrificed their lives for our freedom, I think defines us as a nation,” said Paul Morando, museum director. “As we celebrate 75 years here at Fort Lee, we are honoring all Soldiers who have been part of the school. What better way to do that than to unveil a statue that represents that.”

“Never in my life did I think I would be back at Fort Lee,” said retired Lt. Col. Lewis Martin, a 99-year-old World War II-era

quartermaster Soldier who trained at Camp Lee. “I was born during World War I. Do I have any comrades here? I don’t see any hands,” he said during his comments eliciting laughter from the audience.

He continued to regale the crowd with a few stories from his time here.

“I got valuable training, which I will never forget here at Fort Lee,” Martin said. “I was taught by two of the bravest, meanest, noncommissioned officers that Camp Lee had and that left an impression.”

The final tribute to the occasion was a traditional cake cutting by Fogg, Martin, Command Sgt. Maj. Jimmy Sellers, QM School command sergeant major, and retired Col. Porcher Taylor, also a World War II veteran.

In July, the QM School and museum will help Fort Lee celebrate its 100th anniversary.

December is National Drunk and Drugged Driving Awareness Prevention Month, also known as 3D Month.

It’s a time when communities join a national coalition to conduct public information and enforcement campaigns to prevent impaired driving.

The coalition, a publicprivate sector partnership, provides a focus for communities interested in participating in National 3D Prevention Month by sponsoring national campaign activities.

In December and throughout the year, safety agencies across America work together to reduce deaths and injuries from vehicle crashes

due to impaired driving. Reportedly, alcoholimpaired driving fatalities declined in the past 10 years by 21 percent.

Nevertheless, in 2014 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 9,967 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes.

The safety partners on Fort Lee stand with all those who have known the tragic consequences of drunk or drugged driving, and pledge to work together to reduce deaths and injuries from automotive crashes due to impaired driving.

December is a busy holiday travel time, and celebrations often involve alcohol. All have to partner to spread the word about the dangers of impaired driving. Army Substance

Abuse Program/Substance Use Disorders Clinical Care works with installation safety and other community organizations to warn of the dangers of driving while impaired during this month in particular. This is an excellent time for everyone to encourage safe and sober driving.

Driving under the influence of drugs is illegal, and just as deadly and dangerous as driving drunk. If you drive impaired by drugs – even if it is a legal prescription medication – you can possibly be arrested for DUI. Be safe and sober.
