Chaplains Encourages Others to “Be a Loser”

I was born and raised in a small southern Georgia town and created countless memories as I played on many red dirt roads in my youth. These memories are perfectly encapsulated in the chorus of the Brooks and Dunn song “Red Dirt Road.”

“Down that red dirt road It’s where I drank my very first beer It’s where I found Jesus It’s where I learned the path to heaven Is full of sinners and believers Learned that happiness on earth Ain’t just for high achievers I’ve come to know there’s life at both ends Of that red dirt road.”

That song parallels my life. I have learned some important lessons down my own dirt road including the importance of being a loser. I think losing gets a bad rap because we are hard wired to be winners. Some people win in the trivial matters in life but lose big in the truly valuable parts of life.

They give everything to win at work – yet lose their marriage and their children.

They succeed in obtaining the biggest houses, the newest cars, and the newest technical gadgets– yet lose sight of what really is important and eternal.

They win every competition – yet lose their friendships.

They win all arguments – yet lose vital relationships.

So what are some areas in which we need to be a loser?

Lose Your Anger: No one likes to see you angry, especially your family, friends, and coworkers.

Lose Your Prejudices: This isn’t simple because it resides at such a deep level within us.

Lose Your Grudges and Resentments: Over the years, we all accumulate grudges. You can do little about incidents in the past so why waste your emotional energy and time harboring resentment? It will eat away at you like cancer.

Lose it!

Lose Arguments: Especially with those you love.

Lose Your Selfishness: Remember to “do unto others as you would want others to do unto you.”

Whether the road on which you travel is red dirt or asphalt, remember that losing in certain areas of your life is not that bad.

Army Leadership Brings Awareness to Energy October is Energy Awareness Month.

It provides an excellent opportunity to focus and strengthen our efforts to improve our Army’s energy security. To accomplish our global mission the Army requires assured access to energy to meet our operational needs and to power our installations. Even as we recognize the many Army successes this past year, we must aggressively improve the Army’s power and energy posture in order to reduce our reliance on a fragile electric grid and vulnerable foreign oil supplies.

By undertaking comprehensive efforts in the areas of Soldier power, basing power and vehicle power, we become stronger and more effective. We must work

collectively to change our culture, making energy a consideration in everything that we do and every Soldier a power manager.

The Army needs secure access to energy. That’s why we continue to foster relationships and seek private sector investment in clean/renewable technologies. This year we began the Net Zero Installation initiative, an effort to bring the total resource consumption on an installation down to an effective rate of zero. Net-zero installations that generate, repurpose and/or recycle power, water and waste are less vulnerable and more resilient. The recent formation of the Army Energy Initiatives Office Task Force

will streamline acquisition processes and leverage industry for the execution of large-scale renewable and alternative energy projects on our installations.

Operational energy initiatives will make our Soldiers safer – lightening Soldier loads through advanced portable power systems, lighter batteries, universal charging devices, water purifiers and smart microgrid technologies. With traditional energy sources consuming so much of ground resupply weight, using less energy means fewer convoys and fewer convoys mean fewer casualties.

Fort Lee Kicks Off 2011 CFC Season

Fort Lee’s 2011 Combined Federal Campaign officially kicks off Oct. 21.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the CFC. A CFC Agency Fair is set for Oct. 21, 9-11 a.m., in the Clark Fitness Center. This event is open to the Fort Lee community.

Also being held on Oct. 21, the CFC Awareness Special Event Golf Tournament has registration starting at 10:30 a.m. with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start at the Cardinal Golf Club. Sign-ups are required to Sgt. 1st Class Nisha Dowdell, the CFC agency campaign manager, by Oct. 19. Cost is $25 for golf club members, $35 for active duty and $40 for all others. This week, the unit CFC representatives are receiving training that outlines the roles and responsibilities to make the campaign successful, said Dowdell.

Fort Lee’s goal is $400,000, 3 percent higher than last year.

Federal employees can donate through payroll deduction, check or cash donations, said Dowdell.

“CFC is voluntary and everyone who chooses to do-

nate will help hard-working, nonprofit organizations who assist thousands of individuals and families during challenging times,” she continued. “Federal employees continue to make CFC the largest and most successful workplace philanthropic fundraiser in the world. Continuing a long-standing tradition of selfless giving, in 2010, federal employees raised more than $281.5 million dollars for charitable causes around the world.”

The CFC was established by President John F. Kennedy and, in a recent letter, President Barrack Obama said the CFC is the world’s largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign, thanks to the generous contributions of civilian, military and federal employees.

“Over the last 50 years, the CFC has raised nearly $7 billion to help combat disease, protect our planet, feed the hungry, and lift up individuals and communities at home and around the world,” Obama wrote. “The outpouring of kindness from our nation’s public servants

Fort Lee employees can expect CFC campaign materials to be handed out in the upcoming weeks and the campaign runs through Dec. 15.

The mere mention of Fort Lee’s new Central Issue Facility, brings a smile to Darius Nicholson’s face. “I love this facility. It’s state of the art; couldn’t ask for anything better.�

Nicholson, the facility’s property book officer, said the new CIF began operations Sept. 6 and it is everything the older building was and far more. “We can better serve customers and we can accommodate greater numbers,� he said. “This facility, for one, has separate seating areas for the permanent party and AIT. We have six times more seating than we had in the older facility.�

A larger CIF facility was needed to handle Fort Lee’s growing troop population, which doubled as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure mandate. The installation now trains more than 5,000 military personnel on a daily basis.

The new facility is roughly 35,000 square feet in area and features administrative offices, a warehouse and a larger seating area that boasts big-screen televisions.

Nicholson also said the extra space allows it to concentrate solely on equipment issue. “It allows us to have a full eight hours of issues only,� said Nicholson. “The older facility processes, issues and turn-ins.�

With the new facility in operation, CIF has increased the number of customers it processes. Approximately 5,000 military personnel were processed on a monthly basis before the new facility was built. The new operation has increased those numbers.

D.C. Sniper Ex-wife Tells Story of Domestic Abuse $ $ $ Staff Writer

Fort Lee community members gathered to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month during Wednesday’s Community Action Alliance meeting, hosted by Army Community Service’s Family Advocacy Program, at the Regimental Club.

The guest speaker for the event was Mildred Muhammad, the ex-wife of the D.C. sniper John Allen Muhammad, who was executed in November 2009.

Muhammad spoke and answered questions for an hour and a half and gave the audience members an inside look at her life with and on the run from her ex-husband.

John was a sergeant in the Army, she said and while they were stationed in Germany, his unit was called to Saudi Arabia for Desert Storm. “Until Soldiers go into a war zone, they have no clue what those folks go through – it’s like being pregnant, I can tell you about it, but until you go through it, you have no clue – so Soldiers can read about going to a war zone, do simulations, practice or do training, but when they go there, it’s a whole different ballgame,� Muhammad said. “When they come back, it’s a whole different ballgame. Because the man who went to Saudi was not the man who came

Because he came back injured, Muhammad said John didn’t receive any of the briefings or programs meant to help reunite families. And although he was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder, at that time in the Army any

mental marks on a record would prevent promotion.

Muhammad said John came back a different man – no longer the life of the party – and after they separated, she suffered for many years due to him. He kidnapped their children and moved them out of the country and he terrorized Muhammad every chance he had, even telling her “You are my enemy, and I will kill you.� She said she was always searching rooftops because she was sure he would kill her one day with a head shot.

During the D.C. sniper attacks, Muhammad said she didn’t suspect John of being the sniper, but was watching out for attacks from two different directions. In the aftermath after John was arrested, Muhammad learned of the steps John took to find her and their children and discovered that she was likely his intended target.

While telling her story, Muhammad said several times she wasn’t believed by law enforcement when she tried to tell them she was a victim of domestic abuse. “Believe me the first time,� she said, when asked by a local police chief how they could help victims of domestic abuse. “It took a lot of courage to leave my home to drive to you when I could easily turn around. I get to the door and tell you what happen and you ask me ‘are you sure that’s what happened?’ Eighty percent of victims have no physical scars.�

Serving Up Support for Military Families

Usually, the heart of any home is the kitchen. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where families gather to share stories, laughter and sometimes tears as they talk about their day. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a place where warm meals uplift and provide comfort.

The Richmond Fisher House is truly a â&#x20AC;&#x153;home away from homeâ&#x20AC;? for families of service members and veterans receiving care at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Medical Center. The kitchen is the heart of the facility as family members gather to talk about their loved ones, share information on programs and grab a bite to eat in between trips to the hospital.

Most days, residents of the Fisher House must either rely on their own skills in the kitchen or get meals from local restaurants. But on a recently, Advanced Culinary Course students and instructors from Fort Leeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Joint Center of Culinary Excellence (Quartermaster School) volunteered to prepare a brunch designed to nourish their bodies and spirits. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are truly grateful to have meals prepared for our residents,â&#x20AC;? said Avila Porter, Richmond Fisher House program assistant. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The cafeteria at the hospital is closed on the weekends so families either have to get fast food, bring something with them or get something out of the vending machines. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The kitchen at the house is available for them to cook in, if they choose to, but many are so tired from caring for their loved ones that they just grab something quick,â&#x20AC;? she explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And, not all the families have their own transportation. To have a delicious, nutritious meal prepared for them is something that really builds their morale.â&#x20AC;?

The joint military service volunteer opportunity came about as an outreach project from the school. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We wanted to get more involved with the community and stress to our students the need to give back,â&#x20AC;? said Coast Guard Senior Chief Petty Officer Katrina Goguen, senior instructor. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Fisher House mission provided an opportunity to help care for our military families and veterans

Because military members and their families are stationed around the world and sometimes must travel to reach specialized care, the Fisher House Foundation donates â&#x20AC;&#x153;comfort homes,â&#x20AC;? which are built on the grounds of major military and Department of Veteran Affairs medical centers. These homes enable families to be close to their loved ones during their hospitalization.

After receiving a tour and briefing to better understand the facility and the residents, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Russell

Campbell, Advanced Food Service Training Division chief, wanted to offer this as a volunteer opportunity to his students. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There was a need here at the Fisher House that we thought we could help with,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great outreach mission as the skills the students use are in line with the training they are receiving. It also provides us with an opportunity to take care of our military family â&#x20AC;&#x201C; both active duty and veterans.â&#x20AC;?

The Advanced Culinary Course is an intense hands-on course designed to improve the overall skills of an experienced chef. The course focuses on knife skills, menu development, advanced baking techniques, buffet platter production and presentation, production of multiple course meals, effective purchasing techniques, advanced dessert preparation, table service and nutrition.

Planning and preparations for the outreach mission took place over several weeks. JCCoE personnel developed the menu and accompanied Fisher House personnel as they purchased the ingredients that would be used to create a variety of dishes.

As the six students and three instructors worked as a wellorganized team preparing numerous dishes, the mood in the house was one of excitement and anticipation. Residents crowded around the kitchen to watch, ask questions and share stories about their loved ones receiving care in the hospital.

Brunch for the residents included chicken marsala, roast pork with caramelized onion served on a bed of leeks, rosemary garlic roasted new potatoes, fettuccine alfredo with sautĂŠed asparagus, and made-to-order omelets and crepes.

The Fisher house can provide a home for up to 21 families at any given time. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We stay full,â&#x20AC;? said Porter, who has worked with the program for seven years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is usually a waiting list for families of veterans. There is a process families go through to stay here; usually, our home is for families needing more of an extended stay. Residents stay with us a few days or longer depending on need.

CASCOM CSM Presides Over His Final Best Warrior

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been three years since Command Sgt. Maj. C.C. Jenkins took over as the top enlisted Soldier for the Combined Arms Support Command.

His achievements have been many but few have been more rewarding than his involvement with the Department of the Army Noncommissioned Officer and Soldier of the Year Best Warrior Competition. Jenkins has acted as the event coordinator the past three years and reported directly to the Sergeant Major of the Army.

On Oct. 7, he put the finishing touches on his last Best Warrior event, presiding over the grueling combatives tournament at the Post Combatives Pit. He has set his sights on starting his retirement early next year and said Best Warrior has been a fine wrapup to his multifaceted career. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a culminating event for me,â&#x20AC;? he said during a break in the action at the combatives competition. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had an illustrious career, but to be out here on the ground with the number one warriors in the Army and then to give them input they could use for the rest of their livesâ&#x20AC;Ś thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s priceless.â&#x20AC;?

Jenkins, a native of Yazoo City, Miss., and known for his forthrightness, candor and folksiness, said he had five goals in mind when he took over Best Warrior: He wanted to conduct a safe competition; to conduct the best competition the community could muster; to increase the communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s receptiveness to the competition; to make available the best facilities; and to put on such an event that contestants would want to share their experiences with their home units.

Does he think he accomplished his goals? His answer was a resounding â&#x20AC;&#x153;yes.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;One hundred and fifty percent,â&#x20AC;? said the 34-year Soldier, â&#x20AC;&#x153;with the help of these great NCOs, Soldiers and civilians.

We did a great job.â&#x20AC;?

Jenkins said he hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t nailed down plans on what heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll do during retirement but said heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll always be a Soldier at heart. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s never over,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be a consultant, friend and spokesperson for the Army for the rest of my life. I can interact with whomever â&#x20AC;&#x201C; whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s with a young kid, old Soldier or with some retirees at the VFW. But at the end of the day, old Soldiers never die, we just slowly fade away.â&#x20AC;?

AFAP Delegates Voice Community Issues Speeding in Fort Lee residential areas, inadequate commissary hours and health concerns related to second-hand smoke were among the major issues discussed at the annual Army Family Action Plan Conference out-brief here Oct. 6 at Liberty Chapel.

About 10 senior leaders of Fort Lee – to include Maj. Gen. James L. Hodge, CASCOM and Fort Lee commanding general, Brig. Gen. Gwen Bingham, Quartermaster School commandant, Col. Stephen E. Farmen, Transportation School commandant, Col. Clark W LeMasters Jr., Ordnance School commandant, and Col. Rodney D. Edge, U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Lee commander – attended the out-brief where delegates from the conference, conducted earlier in the week, presented prominent issues and recommendations. Those that cannot be addressed/resolved locally will be forwarded to the next command level (TRADOC) for discussion and a recommended action, including possible escalation to the Army AFAP. “Out-of-state tuition for military dependents was one of the top issues this year,” noted Nancy Burns, the Army Family Team Building/AFAP program manager at Fort Lee. “Conversations among the delegates in this work group were very passionate, and the recommendations they identified cannot be resolved locally and will be forwarded to the next level in the AFAP process.”

Storm doors in all new on- post housing was another topic that drew a lot of attention, Burns noted. The safety of small children was the motivating factor of this work group. Storm doors will allow parents to see their small children playing in the front yard. The housing subject matter expert Albert Williams said “this issue will be discussed in future meetings within his organization.”

“It was awesome to see that the issues our delegates deemed important were of the same importance to our SME’s

and senior leadership in attendance,” Burns said. “The senior leadership here has always been the biggest supporter of the AFAP process. In fact, this year’s AFAP out-brief had the largest amount of senior leaders present. Having almost all of them there to listen to the issues of the Fort Lee community speaks volumes within itself.”

Five other issues discussed at the out-brief were as follows: Balanced access to banking services – there is uneven access to Fort Lee Federal Credit Union banking and ATM services in comparison to Sun Trust Bank.

Community Library location hinders youth programs – the Army Logistics University is not conducive to family members with young children (birth thru preschool), especially during duty hours.

Speeding in Fort Lee residential areas – motorists frequently exceed the 15 mph speed limit and it poses a serious safety hazard for families and youths at play.

Inadequate commissary hours – because of the personnel increase on post, a six-day operating week is inconvenient for shoppers and is not sufficiently supporting the community.

Second-hand smoke on the installation – the community is concerned about some public areas on the installation becoming major sources of second-hand smoke exposure for adults and children.

“During the actual conference, our delegates discussed a total of 22 issues,” Burns said. “All of the issues were presented by the community in the months preceding the conference. We truly appreciate the participation and hope to see a lot more in the future, keeping in mind that the AFAP process is the Army Family’s best tool for effecting change in the military community” AFAP began in 1983 with a few military spouses getting

together in hopes of making the military experience the best it could be for their Soldiers and families. Now, 28 years later, AFAP is an Army-wide program. It is a process that allows Soldiers, family members, retirees, and DA Civilians to say what is and what is not working and what they think will fix it. It alerts commanders and Army leaders to areas of concern (and success) and it gives them an opportunity to put a plan into place to work toward resolving the issues.

There is a direct correlation between AFAP and the Army Family Covenant as well. In order to fulfill the promise of providing the best quality of life possible to military families, Army leaders must maintain a partnership with the communities they serve, and AFAP promotes that desired relationship.

Furthermore, AFAP has been instrumental in assisting the Army in putting different pieces in place that brought about changes in policies, programs and legislation. Since AFAP began, it has resulted in 117 legislative actions and 162 Department of the Defense policy changes. Many Army services and programs have been created as a result of AFAP – the most prominent among them being the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program.

“I would like to personally thank all 27 delegates and AFAP supporters who worked tirelessly on making their military community a better place,” Burns said. “AFAP is a year-round process so please continue to submit your issues and recommendations.”

Warrior Dash Fort Lee Police Sgt. Dennis Mull from the Provost Marshal’s Office was among the Team Lee participants in the 2011 Warrior Dash on Oct. 1 in Warsaw. Advertised as a “mud-crawling, fire-leaping, extreme 5k run from hell,” the Warrior Dash is a playground for thrill-seekers who like to conquer extreme obstacles, push their limits and celebrate with music, drinks and fierce warrior helmets. More than 5,700 competitors participated this year. The Warrior Dash was a train-up event for the Fort Lee Team that is preparing for the 2012 ABC television show “Expedition Impossible.”

244th QM Bags to Raise Funds

Several officers and senior NCOs from the 244th Quartermaster Battalion, 23rd QM Brigade, traded their ACUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s for the Fort Lee Commissary baggerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s uniform to raise money for the battalionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family readiness group Oct. 1.

For 10 hours, their focus shifted from advanced individual training Soldiers to the constant question: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Paper or plastic?â&#x20AC;?

In the Guardian Battalion, the FRG plays a critical role in providing resiliency and support to AIT cadre and their families. In the Training and Doctrine Command environment, appropriate avenues for FRG fundraisers are often limited. However, the 23rd QM Brigadeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family readiness support assistant, Marilyn EnosUpTheGrove, coordinating creative and effective fundraising events.

The Fort Lee Commissary has also proven highly supportive of the 244th QM Bn., and the 23rd QM Bde. They have allowed units to schedule one day per quarter to raise funds by allowing permanent party cadre to bag groceries; the customary bagging tip becomes a donation to the battalion FRG. These fundraisers are conducted with the permission of all baggers employed by the Fort Lee Commissary, and on days when the commissary is projected to be very busy. From first sergeants and company commanders to the command sergeant major and battalion commander, the battalion worked 10 solid hours. Yet, during the shift, customers saw only smiles and quick hands.

And references how the brunch was a form of healing. “Many of our residents made plates to take to the hospital to share with their loved ones. There was a lot of excitement to try the different dishes.”

Annually, the overall Fisher House program serves more than 12,000 families and has made available more than three million days of lodging since the program began in 1990.

There is no charge for families to stay at a Fisher House operated by the VA; and the organization uses donations to reimburse the houses operated by the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Porter said the facility is a beautiful and comfortable place for families to stay, but noted there are needs beyond what they can provide.

“We’re always looking for volunteers and have been very blessed to have some groups continually support the residents,” she said.

“The Blue Star Mothers, Daughters of the American Revolution, Richmond Red Cross and others routinely provide support, but there is always a need.”

In appreciation for their hard work and dedication, Porter presented each of the military chefs with a Richmond Fisher House coin and encouraged them to come back.

“This is definitely a volunteer program we want to continue,” Campbell said.

“If we have enough volunteers in each class, we will schedule a time to come to the house and prepare a meal. We’ve already scheduled another outreach for the staff at our school.”

Army Cyber NCOs Take PD to Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Museum

Non-commissioned officers from the Army Cyber Command at Fort Meade, Md, and Fort Belvoir undertook professional development Sept. 30 at the U.S. Army Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Museum here.

The museum honors womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contributions to the Army from the Revolutionary War to the present, telling their stories with interactive exhibits and videos throughout the facilitiy.

Master Sgt. Kristen Anderson, the Army cyber project officer, arranged for the museum staff to provide a presentation and walking tour of the only museum in the world dedicated to Army women. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is an opportunity to understand and appreciate the contributions that women have made to the Army, as well as the sacrifices and challenges,â&#x20AC;? said Anderson. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As an institution of change, the Army has provided important opportunities for women to serve in a diverse organization.â&#x20AC;?

Tracy Bradford, museum education specialist, welcomed the Soldiers and talked about the Army women prominent in the signal and intelligence specialties.

She told the story of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hello Girls.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;These were some 150 women who were contracted as telephone operators in Europe during World War I,â&#x20AC;? said

During a hands-on portion of the training, Army cyber Soldiers wore cotton gloves to protect numerous original artifacts and documents they would handle. They examined articles ranging from early model telephone sets to bugles to personal documents. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was very impressed to see so many original equipment items,â&#x20AC;? said Sgt. 1st Class Mary Stephens, a signal NCO from Fort Belvoir. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The impact that women made on World Wars I and II was tremendous, allowing for women to undertake duties traditionally performed by men.â&#x20AC;?

Sgt. 1st Class James Sobrowski, a military intelligence NCO, said he learned about the role of women in the Army in its formative years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The discussion about how women integrated into the Army was very informative,â&#x20AC;? said Sobrowski. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Women have always been a part of the Army as I have known it.â&#x20AC;?

During the walking tour, Soldiers learned about the early roles women played, from reloading rifles for their husbands to even impersonating men, as Cathay Williams did, enlist-

How to Avoid Hospital Infections

National Infection Control Week Starts

Going to the hospital can be an emotional and stressful experience for patients and their families. One of the risks associated with hospitalization include the possibility of getting an infection. There are things you can do to prevent the spread of infection both to you and from you while receiving medical care.

Do I need to go to the hospital? Prevention is always preferable to treatment when it comes to your health care. If your doctor wants to admit you to a hospital, your first question should be is it necessary? Some health care and surgery can be accomplished as effectively and with less risk if done as an outpatient. If hospitalization is necessary, choose wisely. If you need surgery, select a hospital (and surgeon) that has significant experience with your operation. Ask about infection rates for the surgeon and the facility.

Is this an emergency? If you have ever been to an emergency room you know it can be very busy and the waits can be very long. The primary role of an ER is providing immediate care in life threatening situations such as heart attacks, strokes and trauma. Unfortunately many patients use

Since then, national organizations and health care facilities have used this week to raise awareness for infection prevention and to effect reductions in health care associated infections. emergency rooms for non-life threatening acute or chronic care. Many patients in emergency rooms have infections that can be passed to others through respiratory means such as coughing, by touch or by medical staff in the process of caring for you.

If you have a choice, go to your primary care manager first. If you are unable to do that, one of the many urgent care facilities can address most of your acute care needs.

Do not expose yourself to the increased risk of infection or the frustration of the high-risk emergency room environment unless you need that level of care.

Wash your hands. It is estimated that health care-associated infections cause nearly 90,000 deaths and add billions to the cost of health care in the U.S. annually. Hospitals are the most common site for these infections because patients tend to be more ill and surgeries tend to be more

extensive. Also, patients receive more invasive care in hospitals to include central venous catheters and urinary catheters.

Hand-washing and hand-sanitizing with an alcohol-based rub are important barriers to the spread of infections. It only protects you if it is done by your health care providers before they have contact with you – every time. It isn’t always easy but you have the right to ask your health care providers if they have washed their hands or to wash them in front of you. Patients’ asking has been shown to increase health care providers’ frequency of hand washing.

There are other mechanisms, procedures and policies that hospitals should have to protect you from infection. Proper insertion and care of catheters and removing the catheters as soon as no longer needed reduce the risk of infections.

Judicious use of antibiotics can prevent and effectively treat infections. On the

other hand, using inappropriate antibiotics or prescribing antibiotics for viral infections such as colds, sore throat or simple bronchitis can lead to antibiotic resistance in bacteria and create difficult to treat organisms such as MRSA. Your family and other visitors can be at risk and can be a risk for you. If they have infections, they should not visit you until they are well. When they visit, they should wash their hands or use hand sanitizer prior to touching you. They should do it again if they have hand contact with items in the room or with other patients/ staff. And they should do it again after they leave to protect themselves and those at home.

Consider having an advocate to help look out for your best interest. An advocate can watch over you when you are unable. They can watch to be sure all medical staff are doing hand hygiene before touching you. They also can be a second set of ears when you receive important information from your health care providers. QM Soldiers Give Back to Community by 1st Lt. Maurice Williams Bravo Company, 266th Quartermaster Battalion

One of the larger training objectives in the Soldierization process for companies with Initial Entry Training troopsis to instill the Army Values (Leadership, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage).

Advanced Individual Training companies across Fort Lee search out ways to best reach the new Soldiers. Some companies offer PowerPoint presentations covering the values; others pick a “Value of the Week” to talk about in interactive group discussions; but the best method to reach the Soldiers is helping them to practice the Army Values themselves.

Bravo Company, 266th Quartermaster Battalion facilitated a selfless service value session at the Petersburg National Battlefield Oct. 7 that included 88 students, two Cadre, numerous park Civilians, and many weed eaters.

The Soldiers of Bravo Company linked up with Tim Blumenshine, Petersburg National Battlefield site biologist, in the early morning at the Visitors Center.

Blumenshine, along with Park historians and archaeologists, gave the Soldiers an

overview of the battle site, and then split them into teams to start work.

The Soldiers painted signs at Confederate Battery Five along the Dimmock Line, cleared fields and opened up a pathway for a future road between Fort Steadman and Fort Haskell, and mowed lawns and trimmed weeds at General Grant’s Headquarters at City Point. The civilians at the Park showed their appreciation for the Soldiers by working alongside them and by briefing the Soldiers of the history at each location. Blumenshine commented that, “usually the park hires 12 seasonal employees to help clean the park during the summer months every year, but because of budget cuts the park only received four this year.

So your work is a great help.”

Overall the Soldiers enjoyed the day away from Fort Lee, and Sgt. 1st Class Stephanie Edwards (Bravo Company platoon sergeant) capitalized on the opportunity after the event by leading a discussion among the troops about what they learned and why it is important to volunteer. All the Soldiers who participated in the volunteer community service received a pass over the holiday weekend.

Children’s Eye Care is Important Part of Health

One of the best ways to help your children in school is to ensure their vision has been checked at least every two years by an eye care professional. Vision and eye health are key to a student’s ability to do well in the classroom and when studying at home.

Children with poor visual skills may struggle to read, have a short attention span, perform poorly in sports and develop low self-esteem. In most cases, unless a child complains about a vision problem, parents don’t ask questions concerning their vision. Research also demonstrates that children tend to not complain about subtle problems with their eyesight.

Some common signs that may indicate a problem with vision or eye health are tearing, squinting, unusual light sensitivity, eye redness or discharge, a jiggle in one or both eyes, persistent head turning, frequent headaches, droopy eyelids or a misalignment of the eyes. As with any condition, earlier diagnosis leads to better outcomes.

Other signs to look for are changes in your child’s academic performance, including trouble focusing on reading, reversals in writing and reading, and holding reading materials closer than normal. Talk with your child’s teacher and primary care physician, or PCP, if you witness any of these signs.

Taking advantage of regular screenings is one way to check your child’s vision. Many elementary schools offer vision

screenings that are carried out by volunteer professionals, school nurses and/or properly trained persons. Screening can be done quickly, accurately and with minimum expense by one of these individuals. These screenings detect the more common eye and vision problems (nearsightedness, etc.) in children.

If you suspect that your child may have a vision problem, make an appointment with an eye-care professional, either an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Take the screening information from your PCP with you, as it will be beneficial when assessing your child’s vision.

Although screenings are an important way to determine changes in vision, they are not a complete eye exam and do not evaluate eye health. Routine vision and health examinations are recommended, even for children who do not require vision correction.

The American Optometric Association recommends that all children receive a professional eye and vision examination at critical stages in their visual development.

These critical stages are by six months of age, 3 years, before first grade and every other year between the ages of 6 and 18. TRICARE Prime, Standard and Extra cover vision screening for children up to age six during well-child exams.

For school-aged children beyond 6 years of age, generally TRICARE covers yearly exams for active-duty Families.

Filing in VA Small Claims Court

Consumers on the wrong end of an unfair commercial transaction typically do not know what to do or who to turn to if the business or merchant refuses to negotiate. Apart from trying to negotiate a settlement directly, or seeking assistance from the Office of Consumer Affairs, a part of the Virginia Department of Agriculture or the Better Business Bureau, consumers should know they have important legal rights that they can assert if those attempts fail.

One of these rights is the ability to file a claim in small claims court when a merchant engages in fraud, deception, or other illegal business practices. This is normally done by filing a Warrant in Debt (for money judgments) or a Warrant in Detinue (for return of personal property) in General District Court.

The small claims court process can appear complicated to the unfamiliar, but it can be navigated by an ordinary consumer. Here is a general overview: â&#x20AC;˘ Small claims court can be used by a consumer to recover money judgments for up to $5,000 or recovery of personal property for up to $5,000 in value. â&#x20AC;˘ Small claim filing requirements are name of the defendant (the business or merchant who wronged the consumer); current address of the defendant (and the agent for service of process that can be found at the State Corporation Commission site www.scc.virginia. gov or calling (804) 371-9967; amount of the claim (include all damages, filing and service of process fees, interest, etc.); basis of the claim (i.e., fraud, failure to perform work, etc.); and sufficient

funds to cover the filing fee and fee for having the sheriff serve the claim on the defendant (usually in the form of cash or a money order). â&#x20AC;˘ The consumer does not need to have a lawyer fill the forms out or represent them in court because the process is designed for use by an average citizen. â&#x20AC;˘ Trials are informal and both consumer and defendant will have the opportunity to present evidence, ask questions of witnesses, and explain to the judge why the judge should enter judgment in their favor. â&#x20AC;˘ If there are more witnesses than the consumer filing the Warrant in Debt or Warrant in Detinue, the consumer should consider subpoenaing those witnesses. â&#x20AC;˘ A favorable judgment does not result in automatic payment by the Defendant; to enforce the judgment the consumer will need to seek additional legal action to obtain payment. The consumer should contact the General District Court for information on the proper procedures.

The small claims process is a valuable tool to resolve a commercial dispute because it far less costly than hiring an attorney and filing a civil lawsuit. This overview is only meant to inform consumers of a legal tool that is out there and does not include every detail in the process.
