Centura College offers new health information technology program

From Centura College

Centura College is expanding its program offerings to include a health information technology diploma program. Health information technologists are part of a healthcare interdisciplinary team and an integral part of the healthcare profession. Students in the health information technology program will obtain a vast array of knowledge about the information technology field that will prepare them for entry into the workforce.

Students will be introduced to medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and coding concepts.

This will prepare students to work in health care institutions reviewing and analyzing health data and transcribing diagnostic and procedural terms and services into a coded form for analysis and billing.

“Centura College strives to be responsive to the needs of the employment community,” said Ashley

West, campus executive director at Centura College’s Chesapeake campus. “Employers are telling us they need professionals with training in health information technology, so we are happy to train students to meet this growing need.”

The program is designed to take eight months to complete. Upon successful completion of this program, graduates will be eligible to take the Certified Coding Associate exam through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Upon successfully passing their certification exams, graduates may seek employment as coders, health information specialists, billers and medical record specialists.

The Virginia Tidewater Consortium’s Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) will conduct college financial aid briefings, “Funding a College Education,” at Naval Station Norfolk and JEB Little Creek.

Each session includes information for rising high school juniors and seniors, parents of all high school students, adult learners opting to return to college later in life, plus all others who may be facing the rising expenses of college in the very near future.

High school students are welcome to attend with their parents, however we do not encourage creating a negative impact on their school attendance or classroom/school requirements in order to attend.

Local scholarship representatives will provide information on their programs and awards and will answer individual questions after the presentation.

This program is free and open to all military personnel (active or reserve), retirees, family members and other base employees with base access.

One-on-one appointments can be scheduled with an EOC counselor following the presentation.

Education center at Joint Base Langley-Eustis helps service members, spouses

The Herbert Bateman Education Center at Joint Base Langley-Eustis has many programs and opportunities for service members to take advantage of to reach their educational goals.

Whether working toward a high school diploma, undergraduate or graduate degree, using scholarships, tuition assistance, or the G.I. Bill, the journey starts with a visit with the guidance counselors at the education center.

To help service members take advantage of educational benefits, the Herbert Bateman Education Center guidance counselors at Joint Base Langley-Eustis assist service members in navigating education programs, selecting degree plans and conducting official testing for career and education

advancement.

While the staff at the education center spends most of their time focusing on Soldiers, they welcome all other U.S. service members and spouses to help them achieve their education and career advancement goals.

Prior to coming in to speak with a counselor, it is recommended that Soldiers create a profile on the GoArmyEd website, www.goarmy.ed, to get an idea of the educational direction they wish to take.

After creating an account, Soldiers can navigate through questions which allow them to compare career paths using data sources. Based on the individual’s profile, the website then recommends and compares degrees and schools to help prepare their education and career path.

Bill use, and to schedule basic skills improvement classes.

“The website has a vast range of information. (It) has the capability to make recommendations on degree plans and allows you to compare schools that offer what you want to go to school for,” said Stephanie Bingham-Tillman, Herbert Bateman Education Center guidance counselor.

“The site can be overwhelming at first because there is so much information, so we’re here to help guide individuals.”

Soldiers who wish to transition to a different career field or want to prepare for college entrance tests such as the Scholastic Aptitude Test, American College Testing or placement tests, can sign up for the Basic Skills Improvement program hosted by the education center. Soldiers must take the Test of Adult Basic Education to establish their highest level and receive approval from their commander before attending the three-week class.

individuals who wish to raise their tests scores in order to go into a different specialty or prepare for those required tests to get into most colleges,” said Bingham-Tillman. “The instructor doesn’t teach the tests — she teaches basic mathematics, reading, spelling and vocabulary tips to help them score higher on the tests they plan to take.”

The education center is also a national testing center for College-Level Examination Program and Dantes Standardized Subject Tests, proctored

by Saint Leo University. The tests allow individuals to earn college credits without sitting through a course and are available to active duty, Guard and Reserve service members with all fees waived.

Additionally, representatives from national, regional and local colleges are on site to provide information for students and offer classes in the evenings for service members who wish to earn credits in a classroom environment.

“The room with all of the pamphlets from other schools is my favorite room in the center,” said Bingham-Tillman.

“Soldiers should never leave the center empty handed because there is such a large variety of schools that want to work with military members, and provide the information and support they need.”

Counseling is available on a walk-in basis from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 1500 Madison Ave., Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation offers college scholarships for children of fallen military From Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation

Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation has expanded capacity to provide scholarship assistance to military children of the fallen thanks to generous gifts from charity partners including the A. James and Alice B. Clark Foundation and the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund.

Qualified students are asked to enroll online at www.fallenpatriots.org/enroll-a-student to begin the scholarship process.

During the 2017/2018 academic year, Fallen Patriots estimates that they will be supporting the college education of more than 100 freshmen who have lost a parent in the line of duty. However, the mission requires connecting with as many eligible children of the fallen as possible, and in the past 35 years an estimated 20,000 children have regrettably lost a parent in this way.

The mission at Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation is to provide college scholarships and educational counseling to military children who have lost a parent in the line of duty. We aim to bridge the gap in funding between the VA, other resources and the total cost of undergraduate college education.

FREE workshops offered for new, aspiring business owners From Virginia Beach Public Library

Virginia Beach Public Library (VBPL) is launching classes for those who are considering starting a new business or who started a business in the past two years. A 10-week series, “Start Smart: How to Build a Business and Get Paying Customers,” begins Oct. 3 at the Bayside and Special Services Library, 936 Independence Blvd. in Virginia Beach.

Taught by Norfolk-based business and marketing consultant Marla Schuchman, each weekly, twohour session focuses on a topic of business ownership, such as customer development, branding, management tools, problem-solving and more. Participants may opt to attend a few individual classes or, for a more intensive, hands-on experience, at-

tend all 10 classes in the series.

In addition to the 10-week series, VBPL is offering additional “Small Business Start-Up” classes in October at Central Library, 4100 Virginia Beach Blvd. in Virginia Beach. The classes highlight the basics for those who are interested in starting a business or running a home-based business. The classes will be taught by successful business owners, including a photographer, a baker and a writer.

New scholarship to help military spouses

The American Military Partner Association (AMPA), the nation’s largest non-profit organization of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) military spouses and their families, has launched the AMPA Military Spouse Scholarship — a new program aimed to help military spouses pursue their higher education goals. Hilton will be the presenting sponsor of the new military spouse scholarship this year.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to announce our newest program designed to help military spouses achieve their dreams through higher education,” said AMPA President Ashley Broadway-Mack. “At AMPA, we are committed to education, advocacy, and support for our modern military spouses and their families. This new scholarship program is a key tool in our mission to support those who are

often overlooked and under appreciated. We are especially proud to welcome Hilton as this year’s presenting sponsor of the scholarship.”

For the 2017 AMPA Military Spouse Scholarship, up to five military spouses will be selected by an impartial selection committee for a scholarship ranging between $1,000 to $2,500 each.

Winners will be selected based on their commitment to community service, and all military spouses with valid military identification who are married to an active duty, reserve, guard, retired, medically retired, or fallen service member of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to apply. Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program from an accredited college or university.

Military veterans seeking employment with some of Virginia’s top employers are invited to attend the Virginia Values Veterans (V3) Hiring Event presented by WestRock, Oct. 16, in Richmond.

The event, free to registered veterans, will be 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at The Country Club of Virginia, James River Course, 709 South Gaskins Road, prior to the practice rounds of the Dominion Energy Charity Classic Golf Tournament. Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe is scheduled to kick-off the one-day hiring event and welcome veterans and corporate representatives attending.

The goal is to give Virginia veterans and transitioning service members the opportunity to meet one-

The hiring event is open to all veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, members of the National Guard or Reserve, military spouses and active duty service members with less than three months remaining until their separation (EAS/ETS).

New Web Tuition Assistance Automation approval process From Navy College Program Public Affairs

As part of the Navy’s transformation to a virtual service delivery model, the Navy College Program has launched an update to the My Education portal, significantly improving the Web Tuition Assistance approval process for Sailors taking off-duty education courses.

“We’ve automated a major portion of the WebTA authorization process to improve accuracy, reduce the time it takes to complete the application and get vouchers authorized,” said Cathe Waters, Naval Education and Training Professional Development Center Voluntary Education (VOLED) lead program analyst. “Not only does the new process give commanding officers greater authority in the TA authorization process, the improvements will enable faster enrollments, grade posting, invoice payments, and make voluntary education less stressful for our Sailors.”

Previously, Sailors had to wait for the Navy College staff to manually verify and authorize their WebTA applications after command approval. The new process automatically

checks/validates the Academic Institution’s (AI) course/tuition information, validates a Sailor’s status, including degree plan, counseling, no missing grades, EAOS status, TA annual and more.

As part of the update, the My Education portal also adds an AI module where Sailors can select their courses/tuition rates and have those automatically uploaded to the WebTA voucher.

“If all Navy requirements are met, if the Sailor has used course and tuition information from AI module to populate the WebTA request, and if the request is command approved, then My Education automatically sends the service member a link to the school payment voucher for signing and delivery to the Academic Institution,” Waters added.

“Our approval backlog for TA requests has averaged nearly 500 on any given day, each requiring manual review,” Deputy Director for NETPDC VOLED Lt. Cmdr. Nick Turner said. “The new automated WebTA process will significantly reduce the backlog, allowing exceptionally quick

turnaround.”

In order for Sailors to have their WebTA request accepted and command approved, they need to meet specific training and policy requirements, including having training completed, academic counseling by a Navy College Counselor, degree plan uploaded, passing the PRT, recommended for advancement and more to qualify.

Mandatory training includes TA Policy and Procedures Training and the Joint Knowledge Online Higher Education Prep Course. Training can be found at the Navy College website under ‘Resources’ and ‘Training.’

Navy College Education Counselors also provide the required academic counseling to help Sailors define their goals and select an education program. Once a college/university and a program have been selected, Sailors work with their AI to produce an education plan, which they upload to their ‘My Education,’ ‘education tab,’ and ‘upload files’ tab.

When all the above requirements have been met, Sailors are able to create, save, and submit their WebTA

application, entering the Command Approver’s e-mail address. WebTA applications that do not pass the automatic checks will be reviewed and manually processed by a Navy College Program staff member, requiring extra time to fix problems. WebTA requests that were before June 27 will continue to be manually processed until all are funded.

It is highly recommended that WebTA applications be submitted no later than 30 days in advance, but all WebTA applications MUST be command approved no later than 14 calendar days prior to an AI’s published term start date. Applications may be submitted for approval up to 120 days prior to term start dates.

Tidewater Community College and Virginia Wesleyan University are new community partners in offering a $10,000 scholarship to residents of Virginia Beach.

The Virginia Beach College Success Scholarship is designed for students who complete an associate of arts degree or an associate of science degree at TCC and plan to complete their bachelor’s degrees at Virginia Wesleyan University (VWU).

TCC’s new digital court reporting program geared to military students From Tidewater Community College

A new program at Tidewater Community College certifies students in digital court reporting and assists them in nationwide employment placement for this high-demand, cutting-edge field.

Sponsored by TCC’s Center for Military and Veterans Education (CMVE), the program trains students in court and deposition procedures and practices, audio and video equipment and the complete process of advanced digital court reporting.

The course is recognized by the American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers (AAERT) and is the first in the nation to be compliant with that association’s new standards for digital court reporting.

Although the program is geared to military-related students, who may use their GI Bill® benefits, en-

rollment is open to anyone.

Veterans who graduate from the program will be eligible for employment assistance through Veterans Reporters, Inc., and its partners. Veterans who gain employment through the organization can enroll in a two-year, paid court reporting registered apprenticeship.

“The ability to find jobs locally and in other regions will be a huge benefit, especially for our military, veterans and their spouses,” said Bill Brown, executive director of the CMVE. “With this training, they will be able to find work just about anywhere the military may send them.

This program will provide classroom instruction and hands-on, real world training in local courtrooms.

Digital court reporter students will get to experience what they will be doing firsthand in a short period

of time.”

You must have a high school diploma or equivalent and basic keyboarding and computer skills to enroll.

The first six-week session will begin on Oct. 9 and conclude Nov. 17 with classes held Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Virginia Beach Campus. Additional sessions will be offered.

The cost of the program is $3,950.

Students who complete the program earn 24 Continuing Education Units, a TCC certificate of completion and membership and certification from the AAERT. Military-related students should contact the CMVE for information on using their education benefits to enroll in the digital court reporting program. Qualifying military spouses can fund the program through Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts.

Veterans of the United States military, along with the spouse/partner and children of U.S. military veterans, who are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree related to technology, may apply for the new HotelPlanner Scholarship.

A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to 10 recipients, twice per year, and will be based on a number of criteria including financial need, U.S. military service (or the spouse/partner/child of someone who has served), acceptance to an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program related to technology, and an interest in a career related to technology exhibited through a personal essay.
