For 8-year-old Janaye Dean, the U.S. Army Soldier Show – her first – captured her imagination and her admiration, so much so she asked its performers for autographs. For her mother, Sgt. Jobina Madison, watching her daughter’s eyes twinkle as she met the show’s Soldiers made coming out on a stormy night well worth the trip.

“I enjoy how they cover all the music,” said Madison, stationed with the Warrior Transition Unit cadre at Fort Eustis.

And cover it the 19 singing and dancing soldiers did – from soulful numbers to a “Footloose”-style hoedown May 15 during two shows at McClellan Fitness Center.

The 2012 Army Soldier Show kicked into high gear last month with shows at the Installation Management Command headquarters at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

The show’s theme this year, “Army Strong,” came through with numbers like “It’s A Hard Knock Life” from “Annie” the musical, where soldiers dressed in Tshirts and shorts mocked scrubbing floors and other duties, to “Over There,” World War I’s theme song by George M. Cohan about the fight in Europe.

The 90-minute, all-original show had no slow moments as lights flashed and imag-

es of Soldiers with their families, protecting the country and participating in other events synced perfectly on a giant screen with their movements and words.

by LMFAO to “Army Strong and I Know It.” The emotional toll of deployment, and the history of the Army through song and dance rounded out the show that displays the myriad talents of Soldiers across the armed force.

The musical ensemble will tour until September when it performs a finale back at Fort Sam Houston, according to www.ArmyEntertainment.net. The group will travel to more than 40 Army bases, including ones in Hawaii and Japan, performing more than 60 shows. They not only entertain the crowds, they break down and set up the massive road show that rolls into each town with two 18-wheel tractor trailers.

This “for the Soldier, by the Soldier” experience is nothing new to the Army, according to Sgt. Drake DeLuca, the show’s multimedia/LED specialist.

“Soldiers have always entertained soldiers,” DeLuca said, officially as far back as 1918 when Sgt. Israel Beilin, or, as he became known, Irving Berlin, directed “Yip Yip Yaphank.” The Soldier Show’s current form dates back almost 30 years. Soldiers try out

for coveted spots for the tour in February at Fort Sam Houston. Many send in videos, or YouTube links, throughout the year to get a chance at the February auditions.

From the Soldier who got pulled from his 8th deployment to Afghanistan, to the Soldier making his second round on the tour at only 23, the Army Soldier Show provides opportunities for its performers they might not otherwise have.

DeLuca pointed to the quartet 4TROOPS, members of which got their start with the Army Entertainment Division.

“We find great talent,” DeLuca said.

One of those talented performers is Spc. Julio F. Petersen III, stationed as a reservist at Fort Meade, Md. The show allows him to eventually pursue his dream of performing on Broadway, Petersen said.

For now, he’s happy to uplift the spirits of his fellow Soldiers across the country, something he finds “humbling.”

The tour this year has been dedicated to all Service members, past and present.

“The production serves as a reminder that the strength of our nation is our Army; the strength of our Army is our Soldiers; the strength of our Soldiers is our families; and that is what makes our Army Strong,” said an introduction in the show’s program by Lt. Gen. Michael Ferriter, commanding General of the Army Installment Management Command.

More than 300 motorcycle riders brought their beloved bikes to Fort Eustis to share the spirit of safety, and enjoy a day of beautiful springtime riding weather at the 2012 Joint Base Langley-Eustis Armed Forces Motorcycle Ride and Rodeo, May 11.

The annual event, which is held each May to promote Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, featured a bike show, rider skills challenges, trophies and prizes. There was also a “poker run,” a ride which took riders from Fort Eustis to nearby Gloucester and Yorktown, Va., stopping at establishments along the way to collect playing card stamps before returning to the post in the early afternoon. Members from all branches of the armed forces, as well as civilian employees and retirees, participated in the event.

Proud owners brought a wide variety of motorcycles to the rally, ranging from sleek street machines to classic chromed hogs. Before the events kicked off, representatives from the 633rd Air Base Wing Safety Office and volunteers performed comprehensive safety inspections of all cycles and riders during registration.

U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Bradley W. May, commanding general of the Army’s Initial Military Training Center of Excellence, donned a black leather, motorcycle jacket while addressing the crowd during the opening ceremony. The general shared not only his enthusiasm, but an emphasis on the importance of motorcycle safety.

“The armed forces continue to have challenges with incidents and accidents. What’s important is to hold these rallies where you bring experience riders and those who don’t have as much experience together to talk about and focus on having a wonderful time while mitigating risk,” May said. “Fundamentally, it’s such an important facet of why we do these types of events.

“Have a wonderful time, but at the same time, share some of those lessons learned to protect each other,” he added.

The following organizations were instrumental in planning and organizing the Armed Forces Motorcycle Ride and Rodeo: The 633rd Air Base Wing Joint Base Safety Office, Felker Army Airfield Manager and Safety Manager, Cape Fox Professional Services Motorcycle Instructors, and numerous volunteers.

The 733rd Mission Support Group Force Support Division, Soldiers from the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program, the USO, and the Air Force Safety Center also provided tremendous support for this Safety Day event.

Bob Longworth, the 633rd ABW chief of safety, said the event is designed to be fun and entertaining, but at its core is held to promote safe riding among Service members.

Longworth, better known as “Safety Bob,” said motorcycles are becoming increasingly popular, especially with the rising gas prices. However, operating a motorcycle involves much more risk and takes more skill than operating a four wheeled vehicle.

“The military has a population of high risk folks; aggressive, type-A, adrenaline-laden, often young and highly excited, who unfortunately are killing themselves on motorcycles as a result of these traits,” said John Musser, Felker Army Airfield manager. “[These are] great traits in combat, but poor traits on the asphalt of our nation’s roads. As a result, the accident rates, serious injury rates and fatality rates have been significantly increasing.”

Safety Bob added that last year, the armed forces lost 91 Service members to motorcycle accidents, and countless others were seriously injured. Of these, 83 percent were operating a sport bike, which are more difficult to handle, and can go much faster, much quicker.

“Our overarching goal is educate

riders, present and future, that they need to make an extra effort to mitigate the risk while riding a motorcycle,” he said. “Taking basic and advanced motorcycle safety courses, wearing the proper, personal-protective equipment, and teaming up with more experienced riders through motorcycle mentorship programs are excellent ways to manage that risk.

“Additionally, the incorporation of a detailed inspection of bikes, riders and required documents, the shared experience of passion and camaraderie between riders of all services, to include leadership at all levels, and the fun and challenge of events, makes this annual motorcycle gathering uniquely productive and enjoyable,” he continued.

U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Robert Plank, assigned to the 7th Sustainment Brigade, echoed Longworth’s sentiment, wheeling in his showpiece, a 2009 Victory Cory Ness Jackpot, to the delight of fellow riders.

“It’s a great event, being able to bring Soldiers, Airmen and all Service members together to share our passion – riding,” Plank said. “I came out last year and was blown away by how well-organized the rally was. I had a great time, and I couldn’t wait to come out again this year.”

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced May 15 that all active-duty Service members and their families will be able to enter all of America’s national parks free of charge. He passed the honor of receiving the first batch of passes to representatives from each branch of the armed forces during the ceremony at Yorktown’s Colonial National Historical Park.

Of these Service members, Master Sgt. Jason Simas, 633rd Contracting Squadron NCO in charge of the services and commodities flight, represented the Air Force, becoming the first Airman to receive the “America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands Annual Pass.”

Simas said his squadron commander, Lt. Col. Chris Wegner, and superintendent, Chief Master Sgt. Brad Smith, nominated him to receive the pass due to his love of the outdoors, including visits to national and state parks, camping, hiking and mountain biking.

“I grew up in Michigan where lakes and trails were always just a few miles away.

I enjoy a nice long hike just as much as a nice relaxing day on the beach,” Simas said. “I enjoy just getting away from being around the rush of my daily routine.”

Simas already used the pass to tour the Yorktown Victory Center, and said he plans to visit nearby Skyline Drive in western Virginia with his wife.

Brig. Gen. Peter Gersten, Headquarters Air Combat Command Director of Plans and Programs, joined Salazar, Jo-Ellen Darcy, Assistant Secretary of the Army, and Jon Jarvis, National Park Service director, to present the pass to Simas before a large crowd consisting primarily of Service members.

“Master Sergeant Simas exemplifies the highest level of patriotism, honor and courage in all our joint warriors,” Gersten said during the presentation.

Simas said he genuinely appreciates the Department of the Interior’s decision to open the treasured national lands free of charge to American Service members, and even more that he was chosen to represent the Air Force.

“I think that it’s a wonderful way to show our Service members that they are appreciated,” he said. “There is so much history and beauty in these parks; knowing that there is an open door for us to see it all for free is great.

“It was an honor to not only be selected, but to also accept the pass on behalf of my Air Force sisters and brothers,” he continued. “I hope they all take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to spend some time with family and friends at our national parks.

The America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands Annual Pass, which normally costs $80, are available free of charge to Service members and their dependents nationwide on Armed Forces Day.

Langley Raptors aim high in pursuit of Defender’s Cup

The Joint Base Langley-Eustis soccer club, nicknamed the Langley Raptors, ended their Spring season after a 3-0 loss in the 3D league semifinals against the Action FC Soccer Club at Yorktown, Va., May 19.

The Raptors, an all-military, JBLE-affiliated soccer team, is coached by retired Service members.

The team plays in primarily civilian soccer leagues as the only purely military team.

The Raptors held Action FC to a scoreless game until the second half, when they allowed three goals toward the end of the game.

Action FC and the Raptors faced-off previously during the regular season. Action FC also won that game, but Sergio Andrade, a defender for the Raptors, said his team has made great strides since then.

“Most players on the team are new, so this was a rebuilding season,” said Andrade. “We only had six weeks, but we came together as a team in that short amount of time.”

Though losing is hard for any team, Andrade feels the team gave it their all.

“It was an eye opening experience for them,” said Andrade when recalling how the team held their own against their semifinalist opponents.

“They were expecting something different from us, and we surprised them.”

The Raptors earned their place in play-off semifinals after a 3-2 victory against the Indies United Soccer Club during the quarter-finals game, May 13.

During the quarter-finals game, the Raptors held the 1-0 lead for the first 15 minutes of game. Shortly after, the opposition scored a goal, tying the score.

By the second half, the Raptors trailed 1-2. After halftime, the team rallied, and went on to fight for a 3-2 comeback win.

The team clinched a spot in the play-offs the previous day after beating the Wyld Stallyns in a 22-0 blowout victory which ended their regular season in fourth place.

“We want to compare ourselves against different teams,” said J.R. Richardson, the team’s head coach. “Once we find out where we are as a team, we can decide where all the pieces go.”

The team uses the league to hone their skills in preparation for the annual Defender’s Cup Soccer Tournament, an all-military soccer tournament hosted in San Antonio, Texas. The tournament takes place every September, and draws instillation soccer teams from all over the country to play for the prestigious Defender’s Cup.

“All of this work is to get us ready for the Defender’s Cup,” said Richardson. “We want to bring pride to Langley.”

Last year the Raptors took fourth place in the tournament, but Richardson said they have great ambitions for this coming September.

“We played well last tournament and placed fourth,” he said. “We plan on improving this year,” Richardson is a retired Air Force member who played for the Air Force’s soccer team during his time in service. He has been coaching the team since 2009.

Andrade says that he and his teammates have g staff. great respect for the coaching “The coaches emphasized the fact that we are not only a team, butt a famiys a lot ly,” said Andrade. “That says about the coaches and their leadeadership.”

The team is constant-ly looking to improve, and bring in new talent. The team will be holding tryouts shortly after the intramural soccer season.

The tryouts usually last three days, and will test players on their abilities and possible contribution to the team.

“With all of the talent here,, at we can put together a great team,” said Richardson.

The team plans to enter a tournament in Virginia Beach shortly ortly after the summer tryouts to gauge how prepared they are for the Defender’s Cup Tournament. The Virginia Beach ach tournament will pit the Raptors against other local teams, including t i l di some professional players.

“Playing with the team gives you a sense of camaraderie and teamwork, and it’s a great way to meet people you never would have met before,” said Andrade, adding another aspect he finds beneficial. “It’s a fun way to blow off steam.”

Andrade encourages all Service members to join a team, regardless of the sport.

“Being in the military is more than just doing your job,” he said. “You can take things you learn on the field to your career, and even to a deployed environment.”

Now that the spring season is over, the Raptors will continue to strive for the Defender’s Cup, and the pride that comes with it.

More than 5,400 technical sergeants were informed May 17 that they have been selected for promotion to master sergeant, the first rung of the senior noncommissioned officer corps, Air Force Personnel Center officials announced.

Officials selected 5,464 of 19,809 eligible technical sergeants for promotion to master sergeant for a 27.58 percent selection rate.

The average score for those selected was 332.85, with an average time in grade of 4.43 years and time in service of 15.58 years respectively. The average score was based on the following point averages: 133.84 for enlisted performance reports, 11.12 for decorations, 69.71 for the Promotion Fitness Exam, 60.42 for the Specialty Knowledge Test, 33.34 for time in service and 33.58 for time in grade, explained Hawthorne.

Those selected for master sergeant will be promoted according to their promotion sequence number beginning in August. Selections are tentative until the data verification process is complete, which is no later than 10 days after the promotion release date.

Wherever you live in Virginia, chances are you were affected by severe weather during the last year as the Commonwealth was hit by tornadoes, an earthquake and its aftershocks, and Hurricane Irene.

The 2012 hurricane season begins June 1, and Governor Bob McDonnell is again encouraging residents to stock up on supplies – tax-free – to help get them through bad weather and other emergencies.

During Virginia’s Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, May 25-31, shoppers can purchase essential items without paying the 5 percent state and local sales tax. There are 22 categories of smaller items, including batteries, flashlights, bottled water, tarps, duct tape, cell-phone chargers, smoke detectors and first aid kits.

As long as each item costs $60 or less it is tax-free.

Portable generators and inverters priced at $1,000 or less are also tax-free during the holiday. For a full list of eligible products, answers to frequently asked questions, and guidelines for consumers and retailers, visit www.tax.virginia.gov.

“The safety of our families is critically important for all Virginians,” said Governor McDonnell. “It is essential that citizens, as well as government and emergen-

cy response agencies, make appropriate preparations to deal with anything Mother Nature sends our way.

“The best way to protect yourself and your family is by assembling an emergency supply kit and developing emergency plans for your loved ones. With the 2012 hurricane season just around the corner, I encourage residents to take a few minutes to evaluate what items they still may need to prepare for hurricanes and other emergencies. This tax-free holiday will make it easier and more economical to assemble an emergency kit now which may make Virginian’s lives easier in the event of a major storm or emergency.”

During this seven-day period, retailers may also choose to pay the sales tax themselves on any nonexempt items and pass the 5 percent savings onto their customers.

Virginia also has two additional sales tax holidays – one for school supplies and clothing in August, and one for Energy Star and WaterSense products in October. The 2012 General Assembly renewed this taxfree hurricane preparedness holiday through 2017 after successes of previous campaigns.

A few inches could mean the difference between a C-17 Globemaster III successfully delivering supplies to a deployed environment, or dropping out of the sky like a stone.

Those inches come from the arrangement and weight of cargo loaded by Airmen from the 633rd Logistic Readiness Squadron at Langley Air Force Base, Va., May 17.

“We have to get the plane to balance within about 40 inches,” said Tech. Sgt. Jason Boudreau, 633rd LRS joint inspection air terminal NCO in-charge. “If you mess this up, you are crashing planes.”

Boudreau points to a computer, which is running the Integrated Computerized Deployment System. ICODES is a jointservice program, which allows LRS Airmen to digitally manage and map the loading process, right down to the people travelling on the aircraft.

“Everything depends on the configuration and weight of the load,” Boudreau said, suddenly smiling. “So, when you are processing through the air terminal,

Just like UPS, LRS Airmen have to be ready at a moment’s notice to satisfy mission requirements. Since Langley does not have a port, it uses a small air terminal to process loading missions. When the job requires more able bodies than the terminal has, Airmen from various LRS career fields are utilized.

“Right now, roughly 90 percent of the people helping us today are LRS augmentees,” said Capt. Jose Crespo, 633rd LRS deployment and distribution flight commander. “We rely on these Airmen to step up and learn new roles very quickly, in order to complete the mission.”

As the pallet organization began to take shape on the flightline, matching the diagram on Riley’s computer. Airmen from various organizations within LRS come together with a singular goal and a combined determination to achieve excellence.

Although, Boudreau jokes about accurately weighing passengers, he and the other LRS Airmen understand the seriousness and precision required to successfully plan and implement a cargo load. Staff Sgt. Tavis Riley, 633rd LRS load planner, said the most important factor is recording an accurate weight.

“There’s a lot of math behind it,” Riley said. “The weights, the fuel and the dimensions all factor into the load.”

While ICODES has made the process substantially easier for Riley, he still advocates the importance of knowing how to manually configure a load.

“If the system goes down, you have to know the aircraft and how to configure it manually,” Riley said. “You need to know the layout, the rails and where things need to be positioned.”

As Riley monitored the load, pallets of cargo were processed through a weigh station and inspection area. The cargo could have any variety of materials or equipment needed to support the missions downrange.

It was a beautiful day at the ballpark, May 19. As the Norfolk Tides prepared to play against the Pawtucket Red Sox at Harbor Park, Norfolk, Va., their uniforms drew second looks from the crowd.

They wore blue, digital-camouflage-print uniforms to honor the U.S. military. For 17 years, the Tides have hosted Armed Forces Night to show their appreciation for all U.S. Service members.

“It’s always nice to know the community appreciates the military service,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Christopher Wegner, 633rd Contracting Squadron commander. “This area certainly shows it.”

Wegner witnessed first-hand the support of the local community to the Armed Forces when guests paused to observe a moment of silence to honor all U.S. Service members who have been lost, and for those who are currently on deployments around the world.

“It’s an overwhelming feeling to be out here, and have my family watch me say the Oath of Enlistment,” said Delayed Entry Program participant, Levanecia Floyd. “I just want to make them proud.”

They also played a medley of U.S. military anthems before select Service members from each military branch were called to the field.

These superior performers were asked to throw the ceremonial first pitch. U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Jamecia Lazard, 438th Supply Chain Operations Squadron stock control journeyman, earned this honor after she was selected as Team Langley’s 2011 Airman of the Year.

“It’s a different experience and a big honor,” Lazard said. “There’s a lot of support, and it felt good to represent the Air Force in a positive way out on the field.”

After the ceremonial first pitches, the Tides went on to win against the Red Sox, eight to four.

The evening ended with celebratory fireworks, which showed the Tides’ appreciation for all U.S. Service members one more time.

The Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and the Daily Press hosted Military Appreciation Night at the Langley Motor Speedway in Hampton, Va., May 19.

Armed Forces Day, which was the reason for celebration, meant military members and their dependents received free admission to the races.

“We hosted the event on Armed Forces Day to recognize the peninsula and regional service members, and their families, for their service and to thank them for being our friends and neighbors,” said Mike Kuhns, the VPCC president. “We want to let them know we are a militaryfriendly community.”

The U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown silent drill team was the first military service to perform for the evening.

They were followed by the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Band from Fort Eustis, Va., who played The Armed Forces Medley. The crowd was encouraged to cheer for their respective branch of service.

A joint-service color guard presented the colors while U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Michelle Schopp sang the national anthem.

The 1st Fighter Wing from Langley Air Force Base also provided two T-38 Talons for the first-ever fly-over of the speedway after the national anthem.

The U.S. Army 7th Sustainment Brigade from Fort Eustis had a static display, which showcased military-communications capabilities set-up behind the stands.

military service was represented by one of the top five racers of the evening. The U.S. Marine Corps took home the gold this year, but Kuhns said Military Appreciation Night is scheduled to be an annual event. He said they hope to add a new name and service to the cup each year.

More than 5,000 people attended the event throughout the evening and of those, about 2,800 were military members and their dependents, according to Kuhns.

“The military provides up to 45 percent of our economy,” said Kuhns. “It makes sense to make sure we recognize and appreciate those who affect the use of those funds; not to mention protect our freedom.”

Looking back on his deployment to Afghanistan, the most memorable experience Staff Sgt. Robert Taylor had was not the time his base was attacked while he was in the shower, or the time a 120mm rocket whizzed by the truck he was driving â&#x20AC;&#x201C; striking a target 50-feet behind.

It was the 12 days he spent at a village stability platform with U.S. Army Special Forces Soldiers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was 12 days with no running water and sub-zero temperatures,â&#x20AC;? Taylor said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was the best deployment ever.â&#x20AC;?

Taylor, who currently works as a power production technician for the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron, said he was originally dispatched to replace the generators at the VSP. However, because the conditions did not suit generator replacement, Taylor stayed in the area to help service the existing generators. He also pulled guard duty, and helped out wherever he was needed â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all in freezing cold weather. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I knew it was going to be somewhat cold,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But, we were waking up in the morning to knock snow off the tents before they collapsed under the weight.â&#x20AC;?

There were times Taylor said he would be working on a generator for only 10 minutes before his hands began to shake.

But despite the cold, he knew people were relying on him. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It sometimes took me an hour to warm up enough so I could fall asleep,â&#x20AC;? Taylor said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But, I took it all as doing my job. Out there, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to be that weak link.â&#x20AC;?

The lessons Taylor learned were translated into the advice he gave Senior Airman Stephen Gonzalez, 633rd CES power production technician. Gonzalez is preparing to embark on his ďŹ rst deployment, a mission to Afghanistan where he will be advising forward operating bases on their power equipment needs and procedures. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sergeant Taylor taught me that you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t second guess yourself out there,â&#x20AC;?

Gonzalez said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You have to know your job. If you make a mistake, you may not get the chance to correct it.â&#x20AC;?

Taylor carried the same mentality with him during his tour throughout Afghanistan.

In the 12 days at the VSP, Taylor said he felt a huge sense of camaraderie with the Soldiers stationed there. The mission came ďŹ rst, and everything else was a distant second.

Survey allows Airmen to speak frankly to leaders AIR FORCE PERSONNEL, SERVICES AND MANPOWER PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Would you like to tell your leaders what you think? You have that opportunity through the 2012 Air Force Climate Survey.

The survey officially kicked off Monday, and soon all Airmen will receive email invitations with a personalized link to enable them to share their thoughts, said Nicole Gamez, Air Force Manpower Agency. The survey will be available online through June 22.

The Air Force Climate Survey solicits opinions and perceptions of Air Force active duty, Reserve, Guard and civilian personnel on a wide range of topics, including resources, recognition, satisfaction and unit performance.

“Every member of the Total Force, military or civilian, plays a critical part in our mission success,” said Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley. “The questions are hard-hitting and we need your direct, honest feedback.”

The survey includes major commandspecific questions, as well as opportunities to express opinions on how organizations can improve.

“Your feedback is confidential, so do

not hesitate to let us know how you truly feel,” Donley said. “If there are issues that need to be addressed, I want you to be candid and say so. If you are satisfied with your work environment, I would like to know that too.”

Survey results will be briefed to Donley and Air Force Chief of Staff in September.

“It is important to note that unit reports do not contain any demographic information aside from active duty, Guard, Reserve or civilian status and officer, enlisted or civilian category breakouts,” Gamez said. “If fewer than seven people respond to any status or category, the results for that status or category will not be reported in a breakout at that unit level.”

All responses roll up to the next unit level until there are seven or more members who respond to that status or category, she explained.

Through the survey, all Air Force members are able to communicate concerns that directly affect them and the unit mission.

“The feedback serves to improve each organization and our entire Air Force,” said Gamez. “Look for your personal invitation to participate in the survey in your inbox and speak today to shape tomorrow!”

Taylor said that while the actual conditions felt terrible in the moment, looking back he thoroughly enjoyed the experience. He felt trusted by leadership at all levels to do his job with a lot of freedom.

“You don’t want to be that one guy who can’t pull his weight, and has to have others pull it for him,” he said. “You can’t do that out there. You just can’t.”

Having others rely on him to get the job done was an incredibly rewarding experience, according to Taylor. It pushed him to

improve his job skills, and raise his level of performance so he could continue to operate with the freedom his leaders trusted him with. Taylor called it his “big boy rules.”

“I really had a lot of freedom to do my job,” he said. “To be the only generator mechanic out there meant I had to be good.And as long as I made everything work my leadership was happy, and let me keep working as I was. Those are the big boy rules.”

Health care screenings can help to save lives

It’s the infamous pink envelope, sent from McDonald Army Health Center, which most Service members will see at least once in their career.

The letter is a notification reminding the individual that they are coming due, or are past due for a breast-, cervical- or colon-cancer screening.

MCACH mails approximately 2,500 reminder letters each month, and continues to mail this monthly notification until the recommended screening exam is completed.

While these notices can serve as a constant reminder of a health risk, the best way to stay healthy is through preventive medical screenings. Some of these tests are not enjoyable, but they may save a patient’s life through early identification and treatment of cancer or other diseases.

Screening tests, such as yearly mammograms, are given routinely to people who appear to be healthy and are not suspected of having cancer. The purpose of these screenings is to detect cancer early; before any cancer can develop. This makes it easier to treat.

These tests may seem inconvenient, but they are necessary – and can save lives.

The letter below is from a patient battling cancer that was sent in September 2011.

“First, I would like to thank you for your kindness to me. You were very patient with me, and I appreciate everyone involved in my healthcare. I have been trying for some time to write this letter to thank the people who send out the reminder letters to get a screening mammogram. Cancer is so hard -- it makes you weep and weep. You have good days and bad. It is difficult to try to explain. I’ll try.

On Feb. 10, 2010, I received another reminder letter that it was time for my mammogram. My husband and I were both at home here, and I put that letter down in my kitchen and said “Why are they always bugging

me with these letters? There is no breast cancer in my family, I do self-exams religiously, I work, I’m busy, I have no time for this,” and right then I did a self-exam and found a rather large lump in my right breast! Well! I seriously could not believe it. I had skipped several exams – too busy.

Now, your reminder letter is covered with appointment dates and directions that are a history of my journey through metastatic bilateral breast cancer, a partial mastectomy and a lumpectomy, wretched chemo for nearly a year, 37 radiation treatments, baldness to curly hair and much, much more. Breast cancer, which has no symptoms, does indeed happen to women like me every day. Someone has to be the first in the family, as I am. Now, instead of being just another statistic, with God’s help and yours, I am also a survivor.

Thank you, to the entire Medical Management team for their dedication and professionalism! To include Population Health for sending out the letters, Utilization Management for the referral process and Case Management for coordinating my appointments and follow up. I would also like to say a special thank you to the Mammography staff for their outstanding compassion. Thank you, for all the women who came before me, and for all those who will come after me. We do so appreciate each of you for all you do for us.

In recent weeks, "pink slime" oozed from the headlines.

While commissary officials assure customers that the lean finely textured beef antibacterial process has been approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration for decades, the officials made the decision recently to phase out these products in response to customer concerns.

"Although the USDA continues to assure us this process is safe, we have listened to our customers and modified our contracts to require that our ground beef suppliers only sell us products not treated with the LFTB process," said Chris Burns, the Defense Commissary Agency director of sales at DeCA Headquarters in Fort Lee, Va. The process will be complete by the end of the month. In the meantime, commissaries are carrying USDA organic ground beef or USDA all-natural ground beef,

neither of which has pink slime.

"All stores are scheduled to have these modified contracts in place by the end of May 2012," Burns said.

The decision to replace ground-beef products that use pink slime came as a result of an outpour of concern from recent months of media broadcasts on the subject. Despite concerns and unflattering descriptions of the antibacterial process, the ground beef industry officials insists that pink slime is safe, and even beneficial, to a consumer.

The American Meat Institute, a trade association for the fresh meat industry, reports that the use of pink slime has contributed to a 55 to 60 percent decrease in the occurrence of E. coli. Additionally, it has made use of lean meat that would otherwise be wasted.

Regardless, it will be replaced, officials said.

"First and foremost, the commissary is a quality-of-life benefit for military customers, and it is important to us that we provide a balanced product assortment that meets the needs of our customers," Burns said.

The law also permits mobilizations for extended periods to support theater security missions around the world.

Except for a crisis involving a weapon of mass destruction, the reservists historically have been prohibited from providing a homeland disaster response.

State governors can call up the National Guard if a natural disaster is too large for civil authorities to handle. If more forces are needed – as when Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005 – active-duty service members became the federal default force.

“Our reservists have been asked and often volunteer to assist after disasters hit the homeland,” said Lt. Gen. Charles E. Stenner Jr., the chief of Air Force Reserve and AFRC commander. “Mobilizing needed reservists will help sustain their support for longer periods and make operations more efficient.

We mobilize reservists to handle contingencies overseas, so it makes sense that we do that to take care of our own country.”

Air Force reservists possess special skill sets to deal with disasters. For example, Hurricane Hunters from Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., fly WC-130 reconnaissance missions into tropical storms before the destruction strikes land. After areas are swamped by storms, specially equipped AFRC C-130 Hercules can spray for harmful insects that thrive in stagnant waters. C-130 airborne firefighters from Peterson AFB, Colo., in conjunction with three National Guard C-130 units, battle wildfires when commercial resources are overwhelmed.

In addition to these units, the Air Force Reserve has other reservists and aircraft to shuttle response personnel, supplies and equipment into disaster areas as well as take victims out of harm’s way.

“With this new authority, we will be able to make greater contributions to our nation in times of need,” Stenner said.

The inability to help communities has frustrated the chiefs of the reserve components, who see no sense in bypassing local reservists simply because they operate under federal “Title 10” authority and not state “Title 32” authority.

RESERVISTS FROM PAGE 24 “In a lot of cases, there were reservecomponent Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines who were close at hand with the capabilities needed, but they didn’t have the authority to act,” said Army Lt. Gen. Jack C. Stultz, chief of Army Reserve. “Finally, we got the law changed. This new legislation says that now we can use Title 10 reserves.”

For these forces to be used, the law specifies that the president must declare an emergency or disaster, and a state governor must request the assistance.

Under the new law, some aspects of disaster relief will not change. Civil authorities will remain the first responders.

Moreover, if military support is needed, National Guard forces will be the first to step in when called by their state governor. However, if a situation also demands a federal response, reserve forces can step in to assist for up to 120 days.

In order for this new authority to work, “We just have to make sure we have the procedures and processes worked out,” Stultz said.

Now, before the authority is actually needed, is the time to get that resolved, he

said. “Let’s not wait until a hurricane hits to say, ‘How do we do it?’” he said.

Another change in the 2012 authorization act allows Title 10 reservists to be called to duty to support unnamed overseas contingencies. The reserve components have a long history of deploying members for medical, engineering and other missions to support theater engagement and security cooperation efforts.

Typically, they perform these missions as part of their annual tour and on a rotational basis with reservists from other units.

“With this new authority, now we can send them down for much longer periods of time,” Stultz said.

As operations wind down in Afghanistan, Stultz said, he hopes reservists will be more available to support combatant commanders’ theater engagement campaigns.

A hospital unit, for example, could potentially spend three months rather than a few weeks supporting a medical mission in Central or South America, Africa or Asia. In addition, at the end of that three-month period, another reserve unit could rotate in to replace them.

Colonial Williamsburg ■ Free Admission Tickets – During Memorial Day weekend, Friday through Monday, Colonial Williamsburg will offer free admission tickets to active-duty military, reservists, retirees, veterans and their families. The “Honoring Service to America” ticket provides admission to Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic area, including the daily Revolutionary City Program, Capitol, Governor’s Palace, DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, and Bassett Hall.

Free access to national parks Active-duty service men and women – Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and activated National Guard and Reserves – can now obtain the new military version of the “America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreation

Lands Annual Pass.” This pass grants free access at National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Army Corps sites and other public lands. Active-duty military members and their dependents can pick up a pass at any national park or wildlife refuge that charges an entrance fee or standard amenity fees. Members must show a current, valid military identification card to obtain their pass.

Where there are entrance fees, the pass covers the owner and accompanying passengers in a single, private, noncommercial vehicle at recreation sites that charge per vehicle. At sites where per-person entrance fees are charged, it covers the pass owner and three accompanying adults ages 16 and older. There is no entry fee for children ages 15 and under.

Army to begin regional alignments next year

The Army will begin implementing a regionally-aligned-force concept next year to better support combatant commanders, the service’s chief of staff announced May 16.

Gen. Raymond T. Odierno made the announcement at a Pentagon press conference as he outlined the Army’s vision for the future to meet the tenets of the DOD Strategic Guidance signed by the president in January. He said the Army will be transitioning to a leaner, more agile, adaptive, innovative, versatile and ready component of the joint force.

The regional alignments are part of that vision and the concept will begin with a pilot program involving a brigade combat team from the 10th Mountain Division aligned with U.S. Army Africa Command, Odierno said. This will be followed by more units aligned to other theaters, he said.

“The regionally aligned forces concept will be especially important in the AsiaPacific region as we move forward -home to seven of the 10 largest Armies,” Odierno said, adding that enduring commitments in some theaters may warrant rotational units in the future.

About 92,000 Soldiers are currently deployed in support of operations, he said, and 68,000 of those are in Afghanistan.

“First, our Army Force Generation, or ARFORGEN process has served us well in meeting our demands over the last several years in Iraq and Afghanistan. But with operations in Iraq complete and ongoing transition in Afghanistan, we will have the opportunity to adapt this process to be more wide-ranging, especially as we re-balance toward the Asia-Pacific region,” Odeirno said.

The intent of this new process, he said, will be to focus units during their training cycle on specific mission profiles and unique environmental characteristics that will make them available to specified combatant commanders for employment.

As the Army reduces two forward-stationed brigade combat teams in Europe over the next two years, he said it will leverage pre-positioned equipment and multi-lateral training exercises to promote regional security and sustain relationships with NATO and other European allies.

“Finally, as the Army’s end strength reduces over the next five years, it is important to note that this leaner Army will be vastly more capable than our pre-9/11 Army,” Odierno said.

Also, he said, with 10 years of hardearned combat experience, the Army will continue to increase Special Operations force capacity.

“We have significantly increased our ability to conduct intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. We’ve increased our aviation assets to support worldwide missions and responsiveness around the world. We continue to increase our cyber capability as we move forward, and we continue to look at other capabilities in order to move forward.

In his introduction to the new strategic guidance, President Obama wrote the following: “Our nation is at a moment of transition … we have responsibly ended the war in Iraq, put al Qaeda on the path to defeat … allowing us to begin the transition to Afghan responsibility.
