Since the dawn of war, epic battles have inspired songs and stories of bravery, courage, heroism and selfless service; sometimes the warriors who fought those battles have become legends themselves.

Thirty-eight members of the Legion of Valor, all of whom received either the Medal of Honor, Navy Cross, Distinguished Service Cross or Air Force Cross came to Langley Air Force Base, Va., to meet with Airmen and tour the base May 31.

“The amazing individuals in this organization are truly national treasures,” said retired U.S. Marine Col. Susan Malone, wife of Navy Cross recipient George Malone, who also attended the event.

During their visit, Legion members watched an F-22 Raptor aerial demonstration, toured the aircraft and participated in a memorial service honoring the members who passed away throughout the year. All along the way, the group exchanged stories and experiences with the men and women currently serving at Langley.

“It’s a great thing for all of us, especially our Airmen,” said Col. Kevin Robbins, 1st Fighter Wing commander.

Robbins’ feeling of appreciation was

shared by Legion member as well. After observing a Raptor in flight, former 1st FW pilot James Kunkle said of the technologically advanced aircraft, “awesome is an understatement.”

Kunkle, who flew P-57 Mustangs in World War II, received the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy near Aachen, Germany, Sept. 16, 1944.

In addition to meeting with active-duty military personnel, the Legion supports educational programs such as ROTC, presents awards to charities, provides guest speakers to special events and provides an environment for the members to reminisce about their shared experiences.

Donald Marx, the Legion’s national commander, described the organization as, “a pretty close fraternity.” He said the members share a special bond, a common language and understanding, and never refer to each other by rank – which ranges from private first class to four-star general.

Regardless of rank or generation, and no matter what acts of valor they performed, these war-heroes themselves often express respect for the accomplishments of the men and women in the military service today.

“I’m so proud of you,” Kunkle said, “All of you.”

COMMENTARY FROM PAGE 2 This is where we as senior enlisted leaders come into play. We have to show them what it takes to become that master sergeant, senior master sergeant or chief that will take the helm of this great Air Force and continue to fly, fight and win.

Mentoring is outlined in Air Force Instruction 36-3401. However, this is a basic foundation, and has core principles all leaders should build on. Counseling Airmen on career, goals, and development is key to successful Airmen development. But guess what? Levying experience and direct involvement are quite powerful mentoring tools that go handin-hand with counseling to pave the path to a great Air Force leader.

Effective mentoring comes from handson and hands-off involvement, and coaching Airmen through to accomplish the feat. Keep in mind that a hand-off is

not a push-off.

When I think of hands-on, hands-off and coaching, I think of my dad teaching me to ride a bike. I told my dad I wanted a bike - my first ever. He bought the bike, and we went outside to the street in front of our home.

He rode the bike so I could see how easy riding can be. This made me comfortable, so he put me on the bike, and held the seat while I rode. Then, that magical day came; he let me go and ran beside me coaching me through it. It was an awesome feeling riding the bike, while he was still right there with me guiding me through it.

I knew he was there guiding me, but I was riding the bike on my own. There have been too many times I’ve seen leaders take over, do it for the Airman and continue to do it. Give Airmen the op-

portunity to show their abilities, and take the time to be there for guidance and feedback.

A senior master sergeant I worked for taught me about paying it forward.

When he led base or community events, he would take me along to see how to get it done. He briefed commanders and chiefs at all command levels, foreign country military leaders, Airman Leadership School and First Term Airman Center classes, and made sure I was there. It was not within my responsibilities, but he saw this opportunity to prepare me as a leader.

The next time around, I challenged myself to conduct his high-level briefs, but he took the time to prepare me, and was on hand in case I needed assistance.

I blew it out of the water, of course, but a part of that confidence was due to his ac-

tive involvement.

This was a true testament of mentoring. He did not point out a single job action I should handle, or a single function that I should lead, or a specific position I should hold that would look good on an evaluation.

I saw my supervisor out front doing our job in the office, leading functions, attending functions, talking to Airmen and talking to NCOs from many organizations. That opened my eyes to what my job was as an enlisted leader. He paid it forward through action. He was never too busy for me or for any other Airmen.

I love the old adage, “Give me a fish, and feed me for a day. Teach me to fish, and feed me for a lifetime.” Mentoring is giving your time and attention to develop our Airmen, and it pays so many dividends to Air Force in the future.

First deployed 480th ISR Wing civilian returns

The first civilian to deploy from the 480th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing recently returned from a 90-day assignment in Southwest Asia.

Dave Pearson, assigned to the 497th ISR Group’s Plans and Programs section, served with the 763rd Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron as the chief of mission management from December 2011 to March 2012. The unit supports flying missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Serving as a civilian downrange took Pearson some getting used to, especially living in a trailer and having shower and bathroom facilities in another building.

“You get so used to home comforts and take them for granted,” said Pearson. “You soon see how good you have it back in the states.”

The base where he deployed had many more contractors than civilians supporting an operational unit. However , the Airmen assigned to the unit quickly adopted Pearson and developed a lasting professional relationship with him.

“At first the aircrews were not accustomed to a civilian being deployed with them, Pearson said. “But after

This was Pearson’s first deployment as a civilian. While on active-duty in 2000, he deployed to Saudi Arabia for an extended period of time.

But this time, thanks to social media, he stayed connected to loved ones back home – a luxury he did not have 12 years ago. Pearson appreciates the total support of this family during his many deployments. They understand his passion for service and desire to serve, he said.

Pearson’s motivated by other civilians who have deployed, and now feels he understands the working environment and operations 480th ISR Wing Airmen execute on a daily basis. He feels honored to do his part as did civilians before him.

“They’ve made a sacrifice they

didn’t have to make,” he said.

He wants the Airmen at his unit to know civilians are in the fight and willing to make sacrifices to support OEF operational missions. Most importantly, Pearson’s time in Southwest Asia gave him a sense of understanding and appreciation that all Airmen make while deployed.

Pearson highly recommends other civilian employees volunteer for deployments, as it sharpens one’s skill sets, has a significant impact on operations, gives a greater sense of esprit de corps and provides the opportunity to watch Airmen fly, fight and win around the globe.

“It was very humbling to see the aircrews grind it out every day, flying 12-hour missions, providing real-time intelligence and saving lives,” Pearson said. “It was awe-inspiring to see how missions were planned and executed and the interaction between an aircrew and ground forces.”

Pearson was able to provide new capabilities to his deployed unit.

“The aircrews were appreciative and knew they could request support from the 480th ISR Wing, something they didn’t think they could do before,” he said.

Pearson gained a sense of satisfaction by providing those new capabilities to the 763rd ERS and providing better intelligence products which can save lives.

The first thought that crossed my mind when I stood face-to-face with the BOD POD at Langley Air Force Base, Va., June 1, was that I shouldn’t have eaten such a big lunch.

From the stories I’d heard, I was preparing myself to be trapped in a tiny cocoon for hours on end, while a machine told me how fat I was.

Nevertheless, I was fully ready to don my spandex shorts and spend some quality time inside the giant egg.

“It’s all a mathematical equation,” said Tony Arroyo, Langley Health & Wellness Center exercise physiologist. “The BOD POD measures your body composition by calculating weight and body volume through air displacement.”

My confused expression must have registered with Arroyo, because he paused the machine calibrations and explained the process in more detail.

“Underwater weigh-ins used to be the gold standard,” he began. “The BOD POD replaced that. Instead of measuring how much water you displace, the pod measures how much air you displace.”

I nodded my head in understanding, and stretched the swim cap Arroyo had given me over my head, making a mental note to double-check that I had taken any jewelry and watches off. Arroyo continued his calibrations, asking me for my name, date of birth, gender and height. He selected “general” for ethnicity, which prompted me to ask if ethnic origin played a factor in this analysis.

He said different ethnicities have varying bone densities, which requires the pod to use different scales for calculation.

Arroyo explained that the BOD POD takes the data it is given, and calculates it using either the Siri or the Brozek density models, depending on the ethnicity of the person using it. The final number is accurate, with a two percent margin of error. Arroyo unsealed and opened the door to the pod, revealing the chamber I was about to sit in.

I resisted the urge to do any stretching before I attempted to squeeze myself in there.

“Go ahead and step on the scale so we can measure your weight,” Arroyo said.

After a few seconds the BOD POD recorded my weight as 173.16 pounds. For a 5-foot, 7-inch male that number was a bit high – but not surprising, as recently I’ve been trying to lift more weights than run laps. Nevertheless, I still blamed the number on the french fries I “had to have” for lunch.

“The whole process takes about five minutes,” Arroyo said. “You’ll feel your ears pop. Just relax, limit your movement and breathe normally.”

Truthfully, the egg was a lot less intimidating than I thought it would be. Once I actually climbed in the BOD POD and sat down, I felt surprised at how much room there actually was.

Arroyo checked to see if I was alright before shutting the door and sealing the pod. The faint hissing noise reminded me of those movies where a character has to go into a decompression chamber. I reminded myself to sit still as the machine began its assessment.

As I heard the air move in the chamber, it sounded like the noise made by a blood pressure cuff when it tightens around an arm. In what seemed like less than a minute, Arroyo reopened the door.

“Are you doing ok?” he asked again.

I gave him a “thumbs up,” and he resealed the pod to continue the assessment.

At no time did an angry, robot voice scream

at me, telling me to lose weight. After about a minute, Arroyo opened the door again and told me the assessment was over.

“An assessment like this is great,” Arroyo said as we waited for my results. “It keeps you focused on what you are trying to accomplish.”

He said exercise and nutrition are the two most common areas for improvement when individuals are trying to lower their body fat composition. However, when people come in and look lean but show high numbers, Arroyo asks if they have seen a doctor for high cholesterol or blood sugar, as they are indicators that should be checked out.

I nodded as Arroyo printed out my results: 25.9 percent – which falls under the excess-fat category. I glanced at my stomach, quietly telling it that I knew it was hiding the fat there and that it needed to go.

However, Arroyo was quick to point out that my stats weren’t unusual, but anything above 30 percent, or below five percent, is a risky state. He also explained the energy expenditure results of my assessment.

“Right now, at rest, you are burning 1,585 calories per day,” he said. “Depending on your activity level, that number goes up.”

Arroyo explained that since I attend squadron physical training every other day, and work out with weights five days a

week, I would classify as “very active.” This bumped my daily calories burned to 3,297.

However, Arroyo also made sure to tell me if I’m eating poorly or taking in more calories than I burn, I will gain weight and accumulate fat. He encouraged me to come back to take the assessment again.

“A person can do this test three months later, after adopting a fitness program and sticking with it,” he said. “The more tests we have, the easier it is to solidly track the progress of fat loss.”

Before I left, he also made sure to explain the time required to make a fitness lifestyle change.

“Change in body composition doesn’t happen overnight,” Arroyo said. “It takes hard work and dedication. For most people looking to make a lifestyle change, we expect it to take three months before a significant change is realized.”

As I left, I realized, even though my number was higher than I wanted, I was still maintaining an active lifestyle. The BOD POD assessment simply gave me a good measure as to where I need to make changes in order to lower my body fat composition, which for me would be better nutritional choices and more cardio.

The entire process wasn’t invasive, or even uncomfortable, and I left the HAWC feeling a lot more educated about where my fitness goals should be taking me.

The muffled sound of water rapping on the hull of a ship can be heard all around.

Gulls hover over head, gliding against the consistent breeze from the water. The smell of brine fills the moist, crisp air. For some, this is a dream vacation; for a few, it is home.

Tech. Sgt. Matthew Pierce lives on his 38-foot twin-diesel, motor yacht the Mostly Harmless, at the Langley Marina.

“I prefer it to an apartment.” said Pierce, 633rd Communications Squadron non commissioned officer in charge of the client systems technician shop. “There are benefits to live-aboards,” By purchasing a boat and paying the rent for space at the dock, Pierce said he can build equity via his boat. Once Pierce moves from Langley Air Force Base, he plans to sell his boat. Simply put, approximately half of his “rent” will be paid back to him.

“If I were to rent an apartment, I would be making a landlord very happy,” he said. “With the boat, I get money back.”

In addition to his equity, Pierce said he enjoys the solitude of the Marina, since being away from base housing allows Pierce to have his privacy. In addition to the privacy, Pierce appreciates the security the Marina offers compared to other marinas offbase. He said he never has to worry about his boat being damaged or vandalized.

For Pierce, the cherry on top is the commute time.

“I can walk to work now,” he said “That means I’m saving even more money.”

Due to the unique challenges of owning and living on a boat, living aboard isn’t for everyone. For example, the Marina must turn off water to the boats during the winter to prevent pipes from bursting. Pierce said he understands that the Marina is actually protecting the integrity of his boat.

The Marina provides certain amenities to compensate for the loss of water. Liveaboards have access to showers and restrooms at the Marina itself. Laundry services have to be found elsewhere, however.

“After deployments to the desert, it is easier to live with the minimum,” said Pierce.

Pierce is not the only member of the Marina neighborhood. Richard Watson, a Navy special emphasis operations Atlantic team leader with the Defense Contract

Management Agency, owns a 32-foot cruiser, the Delta Lady.

Watson shared the same opinions on boat living as Pierce; however he has a slightly different situation. Watson’s home and spouse are in Florida, but his job moved him to the Virginia Beach area. He chose to live at the Marina for the base security.

After coming from Florida, Watson finds the state tax to be a detractor from owning a boat. Owning two homes also provides a challenge of payment, but living on a boat is cheaper than living in an apartment of the same relative quality, said Watson.

For Watson, another incentive for owning a boat is his retirement plan. Watson is using this boat to wet his feet because he hopes to retire in a house boat on the Tennessee River.

When asked what advice he would give to a potential buyer, he highly recommended living at the Marina.

“Do it in a heart-beat,” he said with gusto. “You can’t beat it.”

Maintenance is the final aspect of living on a boat that differs from owning a home or an apartment.

In addition to the interior cleaning demanded by every living space, there are some extraneous factors. The most frequent maintenance is simply letting the boat run every week or so, to keep the boat’s engine healthy, said Pierce. Both Pierce and Watson take their boats out on the water sparingly.

Scrubbing off barnacles and sediment from the hull is the next form of mandatory maintenance. Keeping the hull free of this debris ensures the integrity of the hull and improves gas mileage. Watson has his boat scrubbed semi-annually where as Pierce does it on an annual basis.

Larry Eason, the Langley Marina manager, gave a few statistics on what is required to live at the Marina. There is a $350 flat rate that includes water, electricity, a dock box, a place to park a boat at the Marina, access to the waste station, and unlimited access to the Marina’s shower and bathroom facilities.

To qualify to live on the Marina, prospective buyers must be active duty, retired military or civil-service employees.

During the time of Capt. John Smith, the world was a different place. America was still in its infancy as settlers arrived to claim this new land as their own. The air did not have a tinge of exhaust to it, and the forests were free of man-made debris.

The Virginia Chesapeake Bay was substantially clearer then, as well. There were vast arrays of wildlife, with so many oysters Smith wrote they “lay thick as stones,” and trees so large that a canoe made from a single tree could hold 40 men.

As Airmen gathered at the bay on a sunny, warm day, June 2, they were able to take in the view of a plastic soda bottle, followed by plastic bags entangled in fishing line and a tire drifting on the water. The improperly disposed man-made debris had transformed Smith’s pristine bay into a polluted pool.

In an effort to return the bay to its former glory, approximately 200 Airmen from Langley Air Force Base showed up with gloves, trash bags and litter grabbers to collect garbage along the waterline in the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Clean the Bay event.

Langley volunteers spanned the shoreline in five zones this year, including a new location at Bethel Manor Park, Hampton, Va., where volunteers borrowed various watercraft to reach as many nooks and crannies as possible. Volunteers collected approximately 1,100 pounds of debris.

“With me being new to the area, this gives

Airmen lent a hand to the local environment by gathering plastic bottles, aluminum cans, plastic bags, wood debris, wrappers and cigarette butts, as well as other less conventional items.

“When people actually see the impact litter and pollution has to the environment, it hits home a little harder,” said Michael Mallozzi, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron pollution prevention manager.

The Chesapeake Bay’s ecosystem contains more than 1,500 square miles of wetlands that provide habitats for fish, shellfish, and wildlife; it filters and processes residential, agricultural and industrial wastes; and buffers coastal areas against storm and wave damage.

“The bay is an extremely important part of the Virginia ecosystem and must be kept clean and unpolluted,” Mallozzi said.

Due to pollution from various sources throughout the years, the Chesapeake Bay has lost approximately 98 percent of its oysters, about 90 percent of grasses and nearly 50 percent of the forest buffers. Without these natural filters, the bay has become polluted with nitrogen, contributing to the bay’s “dead zones” by creating algae blooms that block sunlight to the underwater grasses, preventing their growth.

With 17 million people draining pollutants into this one estuary, economic resources are beginning to dwindle along with recreational activities. Pollution, such as a can of paint or an old car battery, can contaminate the drinking water and be harmful to swimmers.

“The pollution affects wildlife, recreation and our way of life, too,” says Ashley Sadorra, 633rd CES water quality manager. “We want to preserve the Bay for future generations to enjoy.”

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation began the annual event in Virginia Beach, Va., in 1989, when a group of concerned citizens decided they were not going to let the waterways deteriorate any longer.

Since then, volunteers have removed more than 5.5 million pounds of trash from more than 4,900 miles of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed shoreline.

“Through actions as simple as clean-up events by members of the local communities, the Chesapeake Bay is beginning to regain its beauty,” said Mallozzi.

U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command welcomed its 21st deputy commanding general – and the second to its new headquarters on Fort Eustis, Va. – in a change of responsibility ceremony June 4.

Gen. Robert W. Cone, commanding general of TRADOC, hosted the ceremony where Lt. Gen. David Halverson, who was promoted just hours earlier, assumed responsibility from Lt. Gen. John E. Sterling Jr., who retired after 36 years of service.

“What a great day for our Army,” Cone said. “It’s a tremendous privilege for me to take part in this change of responsibility and retirement ceremony as we bid farewell and thank Jack and Cathy Sterling for their leadership and service and we welcome another outstanding team to Fort Eustis – Dave and Karen Halverson.”

Halverson, who previously commanded the Fires Center of Excellence at Fort Sill, Okla., said he’s both humbled and excited to continue to be a part of TRADOC.

“I’ve been with the TRADOC team for 33 months as the commander of Fort Sill, and I’m just excited to continue to serve TRADOC and our Army in this capacity,” Halverson said in a recent interview.

“What TRADOC provides to our Army is just tremendous, so I look forward to ensuring that we – as a team – continue to provide those capabilities.”

Although he acknowledged that providing those capabilities can be challenging at times – especially in today’s fiscal environment, the new DCG said that the key to overcoming these challenges is trust and leadership.

“We’re going to have trying times, and we have to know that your leaders are here to take care of you, and your Army’s here to take care of you and your families,” Halverson said. “Will we have to reshape? Will we have to readjust? Yes, but have trust in your leaders, have trust in your Army, and have trust in TRADOC, and you’ll accomplish these missions and you’ll do them well.”

GENERAL FROM PAGE 10 Teamwork is also important to mission success, according to the Babbitt, Minn., native, a die-hard Twins, Vikings and Wild fan who earned the nickname “the Swede� during his time on the ice hockey team at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. “It’s really important to be part of a team,� Halverson said, explaining that the key to a good team is pride – pride in one’s self and pride in one’s team. “I know that in TRADOC, we have a great team, and we have a lot of pride, and I know we’ll continue to do the great things that our Army and our nation ask us to do.�

In continuing to serve the Army for more than three decades, Halverson’s assignments have taken him --and his family – throughout the world. From being a senior military analyst in Panama, to being the Central Command J-3 chief of plans who planned, coordinated and executed war plans for Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, he credits the Army with his leader development. “Our Army is very good in leader development and postures one for success,� he said. “I’ve had many great opportunities and experiences in my career to date, and when I look back, our Army has provided me a great foundation to handle some of the complex challenging issues our Army faces today.�

Regardless of the issues the Army faces today, Halverson said the decision he made at age 17 – following in the footsteps of his father, a World War II veteran, and his uncles, World War II and Korean War veterans -- is one of the greatest decision he’s ever made, and it has been an honor to serve. “That’s why I look forward to serving TRADOC and the Army still – after what’s coming up on about 33 years of service. It’s just a real privilege to serve and lead in the Army.�

In accordance with the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission report, Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, and Fort Eustis in Newport News merged their administrative functions, becoming Joint Base Langley-Eustis Jan. 29, 2010.

Joint basing promotes and fosters a more cohesive operational partnership between the Air Force and Army while preserves mission capa-

bilitiies and unique service identities.

For some however, the terms used by th he services can be confusing.

On June 1, a tornado ripped through parts of downtown Hampton, Va., causing more than $4.3 million in damage across three miles. Hampton city ofďŹ cials declared a local emergency to areas impacted by the powerful storm, which packed winds of up to 98 miles per hour.

The tornado came within four miles of Langley Air Force Base, triggering warning sirens on the installation. While the storm weakened before the twister reached Langley, it served as a reminder for base personnel to be prepared in the event a tornado does strike.

According to the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron Readiness and Emergency Management Flight, when it comes to tornadoes, there is no such thing as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;tornado season.â&#x20AC;? Tornadoes can strike anywhere, anytime, and residents need to know the drill and be prepared to act quickly.

Tornadoes are natureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most violent storms. They can appear suddenly without warning, and are sometimes invisible until dust and debris are picked up or a funnel cloud appears.

Know the signs

When observing storm clouds, always keep safety ďŹ rst. If weather conditions begin to deteriorate or become severe, take cover away from doors and windows.

Strong, persistent rotation in the base of clouds is an indication of possible tornado formation. Look for whirling dust or debris on the ground under a cloud base, as tornadoes sometimes have no visible funnel. Also, look for a persistent lowering of the cloud base.

Be aware of hail or heavy rain followed by dead calm or a fast, intense wind shift.

Many tornadoes, especially in Virginia, are wrapped in heavy precipitation and may not be visible right away, especially from afar.

Listen for a loud, continuous roar or rumbling sound, unlike thunder, which fades. If during hours of darkness, look for small, bright, blue-green to white

ďŹ&#x201A;ashes at ground level, as opposed to silvery lightning in the clouds. These lights are power lines being snapped by very strong winds, which could be indicative of a tornado.

Watch vs. warning Much like severe thunderstorm alerts, tornado alerts come in two degrees: watches and warnings.

A tornado watch indicates that a tornado is possible in your area.

Residents should monitor weatheralert radios and local radio and television stations for information. Most local networks display information via graphics and scrolling â&#x20AC;&#x153;tickers,â&#x20AC;? even when news programming is not airing.

A tornado warning alerts residents that a tornado has been sighted in the area or has been indicated by National Weather Service Doppler radar. On Langley AFB and Ft. Eustis, tornado warnings are announced via the installationsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x153;giant voiceâ&#x20AC;? system.

Taking cover When a tornado warning is issued, take cover immediately. Storm cellars or basements provide the best protection. If underground shelter is not available, go into a windowless interior room, closet or hallway on the lowest ďŹ&#x201A;oor possible.

Stay away from windows, doors and outside walls. Go to the center of the room.

Stay away from corners, as they attract debris. The myth that opening the windows in a house will help prevent it from being destroyed is false. In fact, opening the wrong windows could allow air to rush in, and blow the house apart from the inside.

A vehicle, trailer or mobile home does not provide adequate protection. Plan to quickly take cover in a building with a strong foundation, if possible.

Develop an emergency kit Before the worst weather happens, build an emergency kit of supplies with enough to last each person at least three days. Include the following essential items: â&#x20AC;˘ First aid kit â&#x20AC;˘ Non-perishable food - items that do not need electricity for storage or preparation â&#x20AC;˘ Written family emergency plan â&#x20AC;˘ Manual can opener for canned food â&#x20AC;˘ Water - at least three gallons per person for drinking and sanitation

â&#x20AC;˘ Battery-powered or hand-crank radio with weather band and extra batteries â&#x20AC;˘ Flashlight and extra batteries â&#x20AC;˘ Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities â&#x20AC;˘ Whistle to signal for help â&#x20AC;˘ Prescription medications/eyewear â&#x20AC;˘ Dust mask â&#x20AC;˘ Sanitation supplies

Emergency NotiďŹ cation System Langley AFB uses the Emergency Mass NotiďŹ cation System, a multifaceted communication platform that alerts base personnel in the event of emergencies, including tornadoes. The system notiďŹ es personnel via phone calls to user-designated telephone numbers, whether work, home or cell phone. Personnel can enter family membersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; phone numbers, allowing those off-base to receive information as it breaks.

Additionally, EMNS warns government network PC users via pop-up AtHoc notiďŹ cations on the desktop. The service also allows user to receive notiďŹ cations via email, .mil or commercial addresses, and even text message alerts to their cell phones.

Military personnel can enroll in the EMNS at Langley AFB on any government computer with Common Access Card login capability.

Sergeant Maj. of the Army Raymond F. Chandler III, the Army’s highest-ranking enlisted Soldier, and his wife Jeanne visited Ft. Eustis June 5, meeting with post personnel and spouses during their tour.

The Chandlers arrived at Fort Eustis’ Felker Army Airfield via helicopter from Washington, D.C. Upon arrival, the Sergeant Major of the Army began visits to units across the installation, while Jeanne visited several Soldier-support organizations and spouse groups on post.

Under cloudy skies and light rain, Chandler visited the various units of the 7th Sustainment Brigade, stopping first at 3rd Port where he received tours and briefings on a variety of maritime vessels, including the 10th Transportation Battalion’s Landing Craft Mechanized LCM-8594 and Logistics Support Vessel LSV-1, the 73rd Trans. Company’s Light Tug LT805, and the 97th Trans. Co.’s USAV Chickahominy, a Runnymede class large landing craft.

After departing the port, Chandler visited the 7th Sus. Bde. Headquarters, engaging with 20 female Soldiers ranking from private to sergeant first class in a sexual harassment assault response prevention, or SHARP, focus group. He addressed his concerns about the rise in Soldieron-Soldier sexual assaults from 2010 to 2011, and emphasized the Army’s resolve to fix the issue.

“Are we being effective at the private-through-staff sergeant level at eliminating sexual assault and harassment in our Army?” Chandler asked. “It’s a huge issue for our Army, and it really goes back to who we say we are. If we’re professionals, and take an oath of enlistment or commission, it really doesn’t matter that much unless were willing to put the effort behind those words.

Meanwhile, Jeanne Chandler visited the post’s United Service Organizations office for a review of USO programs at Eustis and nearby Forts Story and Lee.Afterward, she met with spouses at a Family Readiness Group Leaders focus group, before reading to two classes of third graders at General Stanford Elementary School.

Jeanne’s tour included stops at McDonald Army Health Center, a meeting with post senior spouses, and briefings at Survivor Outreach Services, Soldier and Family Assistance Cen-

ter and Army Community Service.

Throughout his visit, the SMA reinforced the philosophy of trust in Soldiers to accomplish the mission and continue their excellence and resilience, even as the nation deals with economic uncertainty. He said the Army is “built on trust,” and that he, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, and Secretary of the Army John McHugh trust and believe in today’s Soldiers.

“The one thing I know is when I leave the room, because you wear a uniform that says ‘U.S. Army’ and you are a professional, that our Army is in good hands. The crucial thing about our Army is trust,” Chandler told Soldiers at the 128th Avn. Bde. “It’s important for me to tell you that, because sometimes I think there may be an idea that maybe senior leaders may not trust subordinates to make the right decisions. That’s absolutely not true.

“We’ve got to continue to talk about the great things our Soldiers are doing, I’m gonna take back what I learned her today to our chief and the secretary to understand how important what you do to support our Army.”

Medical ‘C-code’ not a deployment disqualifier

Contrary to common belief, a medical assignment limitation code, commonly known as the “C-code,” does not disqualify an Airman from deployment, and it does not identify an Airman for medical discharge.

A “C-code” applied to a member’s profile for medical reasons is one of the various tools AFPC officials use to put the right person in the right place at the right time, said Lt. Col. (Dr.) Keryl Green, the Air Force Personnel Center Medical Retention Standards branch chief.

“Our branch belongs to the assignments directorate,” she said. “We don’t actually make assignments, but we are integral to the success of assignment processes.

“We’re part of the medical evaluation process, so we work closely with the 76 Air Force medical treatment facilities, the physical evaluation board and AFPC enlisted and officer assignment experts.”

Ultimately, the branch’s goal is to make sure Airmen are able to support the mission, Green said.

“We do that by first evaluating referred cases and identifying if a member’s medical condition is compatible with continued service,” Green said. “If it is, we will assign the most appropriate code, if any, to make sure those who can serve, do so in a location where appropriate medical facilities are available.”

The process begins when a base medical practitioner refers a case for evaluation. Treatment facilities follow Air Force policy to decide whether to send referrals for medical-evaluation- board processing.

There are three critical components of a referral, Green said.

The first is the narrative, a subjective and objective medical summary submitted by the medical professionals responsible for an Airman’s care. It provides medical background and treatment information and is foundational in referral decisions, she explained.

The second is the commander’s letter, which describes, from a nonmedical perspective, how the illness or injury has affected an Airman’s ability to perform his or her duties or deploy, and how the illness or injury may hinder the unit mission.

The third component is the mem-

ber’s AF Form 469, which is commonly known as a “profile.” This document gives a clear picture of the official physical restrictions that are related to the medical condition, Green said.

“To improve the referral process, we’re implementing a procedure change whereby all medical evaluation board referrals will come through this office. AFPC providers will screen each case and determine whether or not a service member can remain on active duty with his or her medical condition,” the doctor explained.

If a medical retirement or separation is warranted, the full medical evaluation board will be accomplished by the medical treatment facility and forwarded to the physical evaluation board.

“If we determine that a member’s condition does not interfere with their continued military service, we will make an adjudication that the member can be returned to duty, and, when it is warranted, apply the appropriate C-code to the member’s personnel file,” Green said.

Airmen identified for an assignment limitation will be coded as a C-1, C-2 or C-3, Green explained, but even the most restrictive code doesn’t automatically disqualify you from deployment or permanent change of station.

“For a condition expected to resolve in a short time, there may be no C-code. The C-codes give Airmen an idea of their status and eligibility, but options vary depending on individual conditions.

C-1 is the least restrictive code. C-1 coded Airmen can move to any continental United States assignment, Joint Base ElmendorfRichardson, Alaska, and Hawaii, without a waiver.AC-1 codedAirman may also move to most overseas bases without a waiver, as long as those bases have a fixed medical treatment facility, Green said. A waiver is required for a move to locations with limited care, such as South Korea; Lajes Field, Azores; Eielson AFB, Alaska; Moron Air Base, Spain, and to deployed locations.
