The 10th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade, hosted a change-of-command and change-of-responsibility ceremony at 3rd Port on Fort Eustis July 20. “This is a look at the future of the Army,� said Col. Lawrence Kominiak, the 7th Sus. Bde. commander. “Command teams are coming into battalion positions together, and leaving together.�

Lt. Col. Megan Gumpf took command, and Command Sgt. Maj. Scott Reed assumed responsibility of the 10th Trans. Bn. Gumpf comes to Fort Eustis from Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and Reed from Fort Hood, Texas. “We are both very excited and ready to take charge of this amazing group of Soldiers,â€? said Gumpf. “We want to thank all the Soldiers who came out for the ceremony today, making it so special for both of us‌ This is ‘Waterborne’ Six and Seven signing on the net.â€?

The ‘Waterborne’ battalion bid farewell to Lt. Col. Kenneth Williams and 1st Sgt. Compton Johnson, the 10th Trans. Bn. commander and command sergeant major, respectively. During the ceremony, Williams was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his exemplary command of the battalion.

Johnson, an ordnance Soldier by trade, was inducted into the Honorable Order of Saint Christopher, making him an honorary transportation non-commissioned ofďŹ cer. “This ofďŹ cer- and non-commissioned-ofďŹ cer team has done an outstanding job leading this battalion,â€? said Kominiak. “I really cannot say enough about their accolades.â€?

During their tenure with the battalion, the command team oversaw the deployment of numerous Army watercraft in support of Joint Logistics, Overthe-Shore exercises around the world, Operation PaciďŹ c Reach in Japan, U.S. Army South missions in Florida and use of watercraft in support of NASA shuttle missions. Additionally, the team traveled together to Georgia to assist the 3rd Infantry Division with their ďŹ rst waterborne deployment exercise.

Both Williams and Johnson spoke fondly of their time with the ‘Waterborne’ battalion. “It seems like just yesterday I was at Third Port for my assumption-of-command ceremony. Since its establishment as an Army camp in 1918, Fort Eustis has experienced waves of change. From its early days as a coastal artillery-replacement center and balloon-training grounds, to serving as a prison, to the Transportation School era, and now modernization as a joint base, the landscape of the post along the James River has certainly evolved.

However, a short drive down Harrison Road on post reveals one facet of the installation that has withstood the test of time – a lot of time.

The small, brick home capping the hill off Harrison Road near Eustis Lake is the Matthew Jones House, the oldest structure on post.

Estimates say the original foundation and parts of the building date back to 1700, with several additions and changes to the home since.

The house rests 25 feet above sea level on a knoll 700 feet east of the James River. Matthew Jones, a Virginia planter for whom the home is named, is thought to be its original owner. According to Christopher McDaid, 733rd Civil Engineer Division cultural resources manager, most of the original,

wooden building was removed, save for the two large chimneys on each end. The main body of the T-shaped house was likely built in 1727 for Jones, with its original, wooden frame used to build brickwork around.

“The Jones house was originally built as a wooden earthfast home, where timbers were inserted into holes in the ground, and the home built around,” McDaid said.

“This sort of construction allowed the owner to easily repair the timbers by just pulling old ones out and replacing them.

“As tobacco farmers in the region were trying to grow and ship their goods back to England as fast as possible, the idea was that by the time the home needed significant repair, the planter would’ve already left,” McDaid continued. “For that reason, this type of home was very popular in colonial Virginia.”

McDaid explained that Jones felt the need to compete with wealthier planters up the James River coastline, who constructed palatial plantation homes, and therefore opted for brickwork expansion on his house on the hill. The design included two dependencies, or small exterior buildings, used for laundry and kitchens on the property.

“It was about status, saying ‘Hey, I have a nice brick house, too!’” McDaid added.

Anyone who regularly arrives at Langley Air Force Base, Va., through the LaSalle Avenue gate should start making alternate travel plans. Beginning Aug. 13, this gate will close for roughly six or seven months due to the construction of a new Visitor Center and gate-entrance guardhouse.

Tech. Sgt. Faye McKevitt, 633rd Security Forces Squadron non-commissioned officer in charge of Police Services and Corrections, said any traffic approaching from the downtown Hampton/Interstate-64A area will be diverted to the Durand, West [Armistead] or King Street gates.

“To alleviate traffic congestion, personnel are asked to make entry onto Langley through gates servicing their respective destination area,” said McKevitt. “Anyone who holds a current military-identification card, has current registration and current insurance, with a need to come onto the north

side of Langley, should use the NASA-Durand Gate to avoid traffic congestion.”

If an individual works or resides around the Air Combat Command Campus area, McKevitt recommends using the King Street gate to expedite base access.

Traffic flowing through the Langley AFB gates typically peaks at 6 to 9 a.m., 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3:45 to 5 p.m. McKevitt said 633rd SFS personnel will do everything possible to ensure traffic flows smoothly.

“The plan is to reallocate the personnel assigned daily to support LaSalle Gate operations to the West [Armistead] Gate,” said McKevitt. “What the base populace will see is at least two lanes open at the West [Armistead] Gate during non-peak hours, and up to four lanes open during peak hours outside of the morning rush.”

Anyone planning to use these gates at these times should plan accordingly.

“Leave enough time to make it to your destination safely, and have all necessary identification out and ready to be processed at the entry point,” said McKevitt. “Contractor badges will still have to be processed through Armistead or King Street, as this form of identification is not recognized by NASA.” Jim Wampler, 633rd Civil Engineer

Squadron chief of programs, said the LaSalle Gate construction is the third and final gate project (King Street and the Armistead Gates have already been redone) to update the base’s anti-terrorism and force-protection measures at the base’s three main-entry points.

“The second phase of this $7.6 million project will provide a new guardhouse similar to the others, plus a beautiful new expanded Visitor Center,” said Wampler, explaining that construction of the new Vehicle Inspection Station on Armistead Avenue was the first phase. “The old facility was really small, but this new center will be built to much higher standards, and will provide Langley with a beautiful place to welcome folks to our base. It will also house the Pass and Identification Office for ‘one-stop-shopping’.”

The original contract for the construction was awarded in July 2010, and is being carried out by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Paul Petersen, 633rd CES project manager, is the liaison between Langley and the USACE. He said the new 2,800 square-foot Visitors Center facility will make getting on base a lot simpler for visitors and contractors alike.

“Pass and ID will have six work-sta-

tions, a work area for SFS and an office for an NCOIC. There will also be 31 parking spaces, including two handicap spaces, in the new parking lot to be constructed,” said Petersen. “The biggest benefit of this whole project is that people don’t have to worry about big trucks waiting to get inspected at this gate; those have all been diverted to the Large Vehicle Inspection Station on Armistead.

“Additionally, the finished elevation of this new facility will be 10 feet above sea level, so flooding shouldn’t be a problem at all in the future,” said Petersen, referring to the proximity between the Visitor Center and the Back River.

Wampler said beginning Aug. 13, LaSalle Avenue will be blocked at Tide Mill Lane, and the City of Hampton will provide signs to notify anyone attempting to access the base from that direction. He also mentioned a small change in traffic flow on base.

“People coming down Elm Street will no longer be able to turn left onto Nealy Avenue, and people will not be able to turn left from Nealy onto Elm,” said Wampler.

“A median will be added as another forceprotection measure to further protect against any potential gate runners.”

The 633rd Force Support Squadron will host the first Langley-Eustis Appreciation Day Aug. 3 at the Langley Air Force Base soccer fields.

LEAD evolved from Junior Enlisted Appreciation Day to include Soldiers from Fort Eustis should they want to join in the fun.

“This is the time for [senior non-commissioned officers] to take one day to show their appreciation of their juniorenlisted personnel’s hard work,” said James Murrell, 633rd FSS community center director.

Murrell plans to make this year’s LEAD phenomenal by providing Service members numerous activities aimed at juniorenlisted Airmen and Soldiers. Each segment of the event area is dedicated to a specific activity.

Aside from a mechanical bull, bouncy castles and a dunking both, Murrell said a “gamer’s bus” equipped with videogame consoles will be provided for game junkies

and their friends.

For those with a more competitive spirit, activities such as corn hole, volleyball, basketball and a number of Airmen-versuschiefs events are scheduled to take place.

In addition to activities, Murrell said there will be free food, and music from the Heritage of America Band’s group, the Blue Aces.

Those invited include Department of

Defense, active-duty, Reserve and National Guard personnel and their families. The soccer fields will be an alternate-duty location, so Murrell expects approximately 3,000 people to come out.

The Langley Civic Leaders Association will also be making an appearance, and plans to help out with the events to show their support of Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

The main support, however, comes from

the senior-enlisted personnel from across base, said Master Sgt. John Ritz, 633rd FSS first sergeant. Master sergeants and above will be serving food, and serve as proctors for competitions.

“A lot of hard work and planning has gone into making sure the junior enlisted and their families are well entertained,” said Ritz. He admitted that stress crept into the planning process, but to see everyone having a good time is the ultimate reward.

After taking lessons learned from JEAD in years past, the senior enlisted gathered together, planned out the appropriate budget and prioritized needs. After figuring out how much food, people and equipment were required, Ritz found volunteers and set times.

In the future, Murrell said there will be more coordination with the Fort Eustis Morale, Welfare and Recreation Center to make the event better reflect the spirit of Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

“We always strive to show our Airmen a good time,” said Murrell. “This day is definitely dedicated to that mission.”

cer’s quarters during WWII. Following the war, the home sat vacant, save for trespassers who frequented the abandoned building, McDaid said. As part of preservation efforts, parts of the secondfloor wall, featuring graffiti and signatures of the passers-through, is preserved behind plexiglass, with some markings dating back as early as 1939.

The home was declared a Virginia Historic Landmark in April 1969, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places that June.

Realizing the home’s historic significance and potential, the Army Corps of Engineers in Norfolk raised funding to preserve the house, and turn it into an architectural-study museum.

Today, the Matthew Jones House is the home of the Fort Eustis Archaeological Program, with a small office area in addition to the museum space. The home is labeled with small, numbered plaques, annotating significant elements of the home, which are described in an accompanying history guide. (These are available at the house during tours.) The building also features unearthed findings from the surrounding area, including ammunition, uniform elements and even a military sword.

According to research by the Fort Eustis Historical and Archaeological Association, the Jones family owned the farm building and the surrounding land until 1848. Known as Brick House Farm at that time, it was next acquired by Bennett Wood. In 1893, the building was purchased by Williams Webb, who expanded it to include a second story, and removed the dependencies.

The evolution of the building is visible in the variations in brickwork, McDaid said. The house features several methods of brick construction, including English bond, Flemish bond and American common bond. These methods were used to identify the different periods of renovation to the home’s design.

The Brick House Farm came into federal possession March 15, 1918, when the U.S. Army purchased Mulberry Island and the surrounding land for $538,000 from Edward Milstead to establish Camp Abraham Eustis, named for the first commanding general of nearby Fort Monroe.

When the Army returned to Fort Eustis following World War II, it promised community leaders the house would not be razed or otherwise disturbed. However, when the post experienced a housing shortage, the Army modified the home slightly in order to use it as post housing. The FEHAA said a lieutenant and a sergeant lived in the house between 1920 and 1932, and the home served as offi-

Walden recalled an incident five years ago at Fort Monroe, Va. He and his crew responded to a group who had fallen victim to a boating accident. The people on the boat had toppled overboard and couldn’t swim.

Walden and his team were able to rescue three, but the fourth victim didn’t make it.

“To this day I’m left wondering what I could have done to save him,” Walden said. “My guys had a hold on him, but he slipped away and they lost him.”

Serafini looked at Walden, as if understanding where he was coming from. Both firefighters were now veterans in their career, responsible for training a new generation to eventually take their place.

“You have to feel for people,” Serafini said. “You have to have empathy, but you also have to put your safety first. If we get hurt, how can we help others?”

Serafini looked at Stewart.

“How many ways are there to do things right?” he asked to the young Airman.

Stewart responded immediately, as if reciting a phrase he’d heard a thousand times before.

“The right way, and the right way,” Stewart said.

After Stewart answered, Walden looked proudly at his crew.

“Between all of us we get the job done,” Walden said. “And these guys want to do it. They are hungry to learn and train. We have some good guys here.”

Through all the training, the drills and exercises the firefighters still remain on call – ready to respond to emergencies on a moment’s notice.

“We are there to help people when they are at their absolute worst,” Serafini said.

“We don’t say we are too busy, or we are on lunch. We never, ever turn people away.”

The U.S Army Reserve’s 359th Transportation Battalion honed its warfighter-support capabilities during Operation Dragon Wave, a training exercise held at Fort Eustis’ 3rd Port July 16-29.

The operation featured Logistics-Over-theShore, or LOTS, training to sustained trained and technically-proficient watercraft, and transportation units utilizing the port’s Harbormaster Command and Control Center.

During the training scenario, more than 200 Army Reserve Soldiers provided support to the fictitious Combined Joint Task Force Sumatra, charged with assisting the government of Indonesia in overcoming an insurrection of the island of Sumatra. The 359th Trans. Bn. was tasked with providing logistics support for force protection to the task force, bridging the gap between vessels and the port, which is encumbered by enemy forces.

It’s the Army’s element to get cargo from a ship to beachhead when there’s no infrastructure available,” said Capt. Jonas Bateman, the 359th Trans. Bn. S3 plans officer.

Bateman said the biggest piece of the exercise was implementing the new Harbormaster Command and Control Center, or HCCC. The HCCC is a rapidly-deployable system that allows Soldiers to track vessels, cargo visibility, and exercise port or beach command-and-control functions using state-of-the-art technologies.

“Our new HCCC allows our harbormas-

ter element to have satellite communications, [Unclassified but Sensitive Internet Protocol Router Network] and [Secret Internet Protocol Router Network], and full-motion video to do harbormaster operations directly on a beach. They set up on the sand, and are all self-contained,” Bateman explained.

“Our Soldiers and the HCCC are able to see our boats moving, hitting the beach with cargo and picking up, and are controlling the boats in and out.”

While transferring cargo between Utah Beach and 3rd port, the Soldiers faced a variety of challenges, including harassment by enemy forces via simulated smallarms fire, rocket-propelled grenades or improvised-explosive devices. Additionally,

crews dealt with simulated pirate attacks while underway in the river, and held man-overboard drills, providing a variety of scenarios Soldiers could face during operations in hostile waters.

Operation Dragon Wave also provided annual training for several reservists from outside Fort Eustis, as well. Sgt. Christopher Mortorff, the vessel master of LCM8596 assigned to the 464th Trans. Company (Medium Boat), brought his vessel and Soldiers from Fort Belvoir, Va., to participate.

He joined reservists from across Virginia, some from as far away as Baltimore, Md., in honing their skills and training new troops.

“All the Soldiers out here on deck are in training to receive their certification to become watercraft operators,” Mortorff said while underway on the LCM-8596. “I’ve got a coxswain in training at the helm in control of the vessel. When he’s done the training, he’ll be certified to operate this class of vessel.

“It’s definitely a great opportunity for us to be down here participating, as we don’t get the chance to experience this sort of exercise too often,” he continued.

TRX suspension training comes to Langley AFB

Physical fitness is a key component to any Service member’s lifestyle; it is paramount to mission success and an integral part of the core values of all branches.

The Shelbank Fitness Center at Langley Air Force Base, Va., strives to provide a full schedule of programs to keep Service members, retirees and their dependents active and interested in maintaining their fitness. On July 11, the fitness center held a Total Resistance Exercise instructor certification course, to increase the diversity of programs available to athletes.

TRX is a suspension-training workout, which uses body weight and functionalmovement exercises for a high-intensity, full-body and cardio workout. The program uses the three principles of vector resistance, stability training, and pendulum effect to increase strength, flexibility and balance.

The introduction of this course is part of the Langley fitness program’s effort to diversify the options available to Service members.

“The program generated from Servicemember interest,” said John Hickok, Shel-

bank Fitness Center fitness director. “The increasing demand led us to set up this course to meet the needs of interested patrons.”

The fitness center hopes to increase the number of offered classes in the morning and evening to accommodate the schedule of anyone interested in participating.

While most programs are invented by civilians, TRX was developed by members of the U.S. Navy S.E.A.L.s, and has incorporated feedback from active-duty Service members worldwide. The exercises implement movements common in a day-to-day work environment.

“Lifting weights can only do so much for your body. With the bench press for example, it’s rare that you have to lift something off of your body from a lying-down position,” said Mike Skaggs, the course instructor. “This program strengthens your body in the natural way it moves.”

Due to the fact TRX is made up of exercises that reinforce the core and joints, it strengthens the body as a whole. The fitness center will also provide TRX kits available to check out for anyone interested in the program, but unable attend the classes regularly.

From the arch of the foot to the swing of the arm, the Health and Wellness Center taught Airmen the secret to shaving up to a minute from the physical training test, July 9, at Langley Air Force Base, Va. Pack leaders and those that bring up the rear both beneďŹ ted from the HAWCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s running program. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What we do is look at running form,â&#x20AC;? said Tony Arroyo, a HAWC exercise physiologist. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Then we give them a good progression program speciďŹ c to the mile-and-a-half.â&#x20AC;?

Prior to an outdoor evaluation, Capt. Kristen Mayer, a 633rd Medical Group physical therapist, taught participants about the importance of running form and proper footwear.

Without proper footwear, for example, common injuries such as shin splints and lower back pain arise, said Mayer. Also, improper footwear and form can cause permanent injury to the knees and ankles due to the arch of a runnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s foot, or the way their foot hits the ground.

Mayer explained the importance of the progression system and helped participants with their individual problems, such as shoe brands and workouts. Afterwards, Arroyo expanded on the workout, and calculated what runners would need to do to reach their goals. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most individuals go wrong by starting their training

too late,â&#x20AC;? said Arroyo. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have time for their bodies to adapt to what they are trying to get accomplished.â&#x20AC;?

Arroyo said a 90-day training period, focused around progression of intensity, is the key to improving run times. In addition to progression, he stressed that runners shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pound the pavement ďŹ ve days a week.

He advocates for runners to work three days, and then do active recovery.

Active recovery means working out on days that arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t part of an exercise program, giving certain muscles a break, while still staying active. An example would be running three days a week, then doing muscle training or sports during the rest of the week.

With all these lessons learned, Arroyo took the class out to the track to evaluate the gait of each runner, and give tips and advice on how to improve their run.

Arroyo took the class through a series of warm-ups, took notes and kept time as each participant ran a lap, then told each runner where improvement was needed to maximize energy. After the activity, he gave out information from the HAWC the class could use to improve. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everybody moves differently,â&#x20AC;? said Arroyo. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The purpose of this class is to show them speciďŹ cally what needs to be changed to improve their overall ďŹ tness.â&#x20AC;?

The curriculum included every exercise and leadership techniques. The class was split into two groups who took turns instructing and doing the multiple exercises.

TRX began due to general interest in the program by avid gym-goers. The program is currently taught at the ďŹ tness center twice a week for anyone interested, but with a newly-certiďŹ ed group of instructors, the center hopes to increase the num-

ber of participants.

Since the program is geared toward a military lifestyle, it could be beneďŹ cial in a deployed setting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Courses like TRX can greatly help Service members in the long run,â&#x20AC;? said Staff Sgt. The Air Force Command and Control Integration Center, partnered with the 633rd Air Base Wing first responders, concluded the second phase of the Joint Forces Experiment July 20 at Langley Air Force Base, Va. The week-long experiment, Unified Capabilities II, tested the integration of mobile devices with firstresponse teams’ ability to respond to emergencies, and share pertinent information with fellow emergency personnel in real-time.

The experiment used realistic scenarios to measure the capabilities of new and emerging technology with emergency-response teams from Langley and the surrounding area.

The study relied on active-shooter and mass-casualty scenarios to test communication between security forces, medical personnel and firefighters. These scenarios were selected because they require a full response from all three departments.

They offered a chance to derive information-exchange requirements for Service members to do their job more effectively.

“The most important objective of this experiment is to aid first responders, so they can help when you need it most,” said Greg Church, JEFX experimentation branch chief.

The use of multiple technologies, such as smart phones and tablets, allows emergency-response teams to share up-to-the-second information as it develops on-scene, replacing the voice-only communication capability of the land mobile radios currently used.

Because technology fully impacts everyday life, this new system offers a simple solution that can greatly improve communication between emergency response departments, said Tech. Sgt. William Copeland,

633rd Security Forces Squadron flight chief. One person on-scene will have the ability to disperse information to all first responders quickly and efficiently. This will allow all personnel to see the same information simultaneously, providing a complete picture as soon as the call comes in.

This technology removes the need for constant calls to each department, saving time, money, resources, and potentially, lives.

“This method will offer streamlined communication between first responders,” said Staff Sgt. Sarah Kearney, 633rd SFS specialist and experiment assessor. “Technology is changing every day, and this gives us the opportunity to enhance the way we handle emergency situations.”

This new system will allow leadership at the Emergency Operations Center to have a constant situational awareness of the event, allowing them to tie the teams together into a unified front.

The first phase of the experiment, Unified Capabilities I, was conducted Jan. 16 through Feb. 10, and tested different cellular providers, as

well as set up a mobile infrastructure on Langley AFB using thirdand fourth-generation cellular technologies and mobile devices.

Although the first phase was only a few months ago, the process has been a year in the making.

Last summer, the JEFX team met with Langley first responders to get an operational look at potential ideas to improve the current response system in place. Those same team members helped conduct the latest phase of the experiment. This provides them with context, while allowing them to grow with project.

“The first phases of the experiment opened the door to new technology,” said Col. Joel Martin, Innovation and Experimentation division chief. “We wanted to find out what it could do for a warfighter in any environment.”

While all military personnel are familiar with exercises, the purpose and methods of experiments are not as widely known. An exercise tests the capabilities of personnel and their ability to complete tasks proficiently, whereas experiments test new equipment and procedures.
