Fort Eustis participated in the Armywide Suicide Prevention Stand-Down Day Sept. 27, providing awareness, support and hope for Soldiers and family members affected by stress, depression and suicide.

The observance kicked off before dawn, as nearly 3,000 Soldiers emerged from the darkness at Murphy Field for a two-and-a-half-mile run or walk to begin the day. Following the run, Soldiers spent valuable “command time” with military and spiritual leaders, attending counseling sessions at the Regimental Memorial Chapel, and interacting with battle buddies in guided discussion.

The Fort Eustis Club hosted a Comprehensive Resilience Fair, featuring professionals from more than 30 support agencies and organizations across post and outside the gate, including chaplains, family advocates and mental health workers, who offered not only information, but a helping hand and smiling face to troops in need.

Bob Delaney is a former National Basketball Association referee who suffered from post-traumatic stress during his time as a New Jersey state trooper. He spoke to a packed house at Jacobs Theater as part of the stand-down day, detailing his gritty undercover assignment infiltrating the Mafia, and how the experience left lasting psychological effects on him long after he retired.

“The things I went through, it’s not altogether different from what many Soldiers experience, spending so much time in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Delaney said. “That disruption in your life can eventually become your new normal, and that’s what we need to overcome.”

Maj. Gen. Bradley May, the senior commander of Army Element Eustis and deputy commanding general of Initial Military Training, shared his appreciation for “commandos,” who have voluntarily thrust

themselves into America’s battles, in his early morning remarks, reminding them of how invaluable they are to the country.

“As the defenders of freedom, I can’t tell you how much our nation holds you in such high regard, and has such respect and admiration for you,” May said to the troops. “You’re the nation’s most precious resource. We want to do everything we can to take the very best care of you.

“Shoulder-to-shoulder we stand up for life, and when we stand together, no one can defeat us.”

May’s message is one echoed by senior military leaders across the Armed Forces, and with just cause. A Sept. 27 Department of Defense report revealed 237 potential suicides across active-duty, Reserve and National Guard forces so far in 2012, with 139 confirmed as suicides.

Fort Eustis lost two Soldiers to suicide in 2011. To date in 2012, the post has suffered two confirmed suicides, with six cases still under investigation.

During his address to senior leaders at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Va., Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond Odierno said the Army lost 283 Soldiers to suicide in 2011, but the rate in 2012 is higher than at this time last year.

“I equate that to a whole bunch of infantry squads. That’s what I think about.

How many infantry squads is that? A lot ... a lot,” he said. “These are 283 Soldiers who raised their hands, who wanted to join an institution that is greater than themselves and they probably joined to prove themselves, maybe to move forward with their lives, or maybe they just wanted to fight for their country. Two hundred eightythree are too many, and the loss of one Soldier is one too many no matter what the cause may be.”

“The Army’s commitment to walk with families through their grief is sincere and genuine,” said Col. Kenneth W. Stice, a chaplain in charge of strategic communications with the Office of the

“Those efforts cannot bring back their loved ones, but it really makes the difference to help them start the healing and growth necessary to go on with their lives.

“Classes don’t prevent suicide,” Stice said, but what they do is “prepare the battle buddy.” He explained that classes can teach Soldiers and family members how to recognize signs of risk and how to react in order to save lives.

Few Soldiers understand the benefit of getting help better than Chief Warrant Officer 4 Cliff Bauman, a Soldier assigned to IMT’s Basic Officer Leaders Course division at Fort Eustis. Bauman battled severe post-traumatic stress following the Sept. 11 terror attack on the Pentagon, where he had been working that day.

Beleaguered with guilt over not having been able to save others, he eventually attempted suicide, ingesting 20 sleeping pills. His brother, a nurse, found him at

home unconscious and rushed him to the hospital, saving his life. From there, Bauman knew he needed to focus on getting help to overcome his issues.

It was through years of counseling and help from the Army’s support system that Bauman recovered, and he now dedicates his efforts to helping Soldiers get the help they need to win the battle against crippling stress and suicidal thoughts.

“I feel it’s important Soldiers do know that people go through dark places at any time in their life, and that’s okay – it’s part of life. If something traumatic happens to you, whether on the battlefield or even driving to work, know that some things you can’t handle by yourself,” he said. “Going to counseling didn’t make me less of a Soldier, and didn’t make me less of a man.

“If anything, it made me a stronger Soldier and a stronger man, because now I can deal with those problems easier if and when they come up.”

This challenge does not involve weapons, land navigation, speed or agility.

These Soldiers need to bring their “Agame” on stage and under the lights.

Fort Eustis is hosting Operation Rising Star, an Army-wide competition to find the best singing talent in the Army. The contest is an elimination-style competition, similar to popular television shows “American Idol” and “The Voice.”

Participants, comprised of active-duty, Reserve and National Guard Soldiers and their adult family members, perform before a panel of judges and a live audience, who score the performers, and vote for their favorites each week.

This year’s judges include Lt. Col. Stephen Ledbetter, the 53rd Transportation Battalion commander, Sgt. Maj. James Coleman, the 53rd Trans. Bn. command sergeant major, and Sheri Reese, a current Training and Doctrine Command employee and former disc jockey.

The Fort Eustis leg of ORS, held at the Lakeside Sports Bar, runs through Oct. 28, when the final round will determine which performer moves on to the national competition in San Antonio, Texas.

In addition to qualifying for the Armywide finals, the winner of the contest will receive $500. Second and third place runners-up receive $250 and $100, respectively.

Fort Eustis’ competition boasts Soldiers from various units across the post, and encompasses several music genres, from country to rock to R&B. Spc. Reuben Eldridge, a motor transport operator assigned to the 688th Rapid Port Opening Element, brings his southern

twang to the contest. However, he said he can do more than belt out country tunes.

“I can adapt to a lot of different styles of music, really expand my repertoire,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed being a part of it. It’s fun getting the crowd into the performance.”

Eldridge said he first learned about ORS while in basic training, and has been waiting to get the opportunity to showcase his singing skills, which he thinks will take him to the top.

“I expect to take it to the top two for sure,” the specialist said, flashing a clever smile. “If I win, it won’t be as much of a surprise as an accomplishment.”

But making the cut to get to the finals will be difficult in the crowd of talent vying for the top honor. Spc. Aleeta Darland thinks her impressive range will help her wow the crowd and earn the crown.

“At first I wasn’t going to do it, but people kept telling me ‘you gotta do it, you gotta do it,’” said Darland, a multichannel transmission systems operator from the 235th Signal Company. Having been singing since she was 11, including time in choir, she said she brings a lot to the table.

“I think doing all sorts of genres really shows your versatility as an artist, and that’s what judges are looking for,” she said. “I think that’s what will help me. I didn’t come here to place second or third.”

While the singers bring their fiery resolve to the stage for their performances, they maintain that regardless of the outcome, everyone is in it to have fun.

“I don’t know what my chances are, so I’ll just go with the flow and see where it takes me,” said Pfc. Ashton VanRoekel, a watercraft operator with the 1098th Transportation Company. “It doesn’t affect me if I get voted out or if I win. There [are] a lot of great people involved, and we’re just having a great time.”

The Commissary Rewards Card is now available in the Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis Commissaries. The card allows customers to access digital coupons online and redeem them in any commissary by scanning the card at checkout.

“We’re very excited about this new initiative,” said Defense Commissary Agency Director and CEO Joseph H. Jeu. “These cards allow our customers to reduce the number of paper coupons they have to clip and carry. That saves our customers time, effort and money.”

The cards, available only from a commissary, are easy to use. As an introductory offer, customers who pick up their card by Oct. 24 receive preloaded digital coupons which can be used immediately in the commissary, even before the card is registered. To register a card and add more digital coupons, customers can visit the commissary website at http://www.commissaries.com/rewards/index.cfm.

Once a card is registered, customers can print a list of their digital coupons to carry with them to the commissary, and help keep track of their savings. New digital coupon offers are typically posted online every two to three weeks.

Customers who register their card by Oct. 24 can enter the 2012 Commissary Rewards Card “Home for the Holidays Sweepstakes,” for a chance to win roundtrip airline tickets for four to anywhere in the country, six days and five nights in a hotel for four, and $1,000 spending money.

The sweepstakes entry form appears at

the end of the online registration process.

Just like their paper counterparts, digital coupons have expiration dates, and other terms and conditions that must be followed for redemption. However, Commissary Rewards Card digital coupons will not be accepted in commissaries overseas for up to six months after expiration, as paper coupons are. This is because the coupons are distributed digitally and instantly available to all customers worldwide. Once a coupon expires, it will disappear from the customer’s account.

DeCA’s coupon policy limits coupons to one per purchase, so these digital coupons cannot be combined with manufacturer coupons, including paper coupons and military or commissary coupons.

Future enhancements to the card are expected to enable DeCA’s industry partners to target savings based on the customer’s specific usage, alert patrons to available sales promotions at their local stores and reward consistent shoppers with specific incentives.

“Digital couponing is the first of many innovative programs that are part of our Commissary 2020 vision to deliver a 21st century benefit,” Jeu said. “We are always working with our industry partners to negotiate the lowest possible prices and identify new ways for our customers to save even more.”

The days of waiting on hold to talk to a healthcare professional, or scheduling an appointment to simply ask your doctor a question, are long gone.

McDonald Army Health Center is now offering a new service to enrolled beneďŹ ciaries to improve communications and allow patients to correspond with their healthcare provider team using a secure messaging service called RelayHealth.

Army Medicine’s Secure Messaging System, powered

by RelayHealth, brings a healthcare team to patients, wherever they are, any time of day, allowing them to safely send a message to a doctor or nurse from the comfort and privacy of home.

Patients who sign up for RelayHealth can contact their primary care clinic to request prescription renewals, receive test and laboratory results, request appointments and referrals, and get guidance from their medical team by email. It will also allow patients to consult with their medical team regarding non-urgent health matters, avoid unnecessary ofďŹ ce visits and telephone calls, and access valuable health information online.

The new system is not only beneďŹ ting patients. RelayHealth makes communication more efďŹ cient for doctors and nurses.

RelayHealth provides streamlined clinical, ďŹ nancial and administrative communication between patients, providers, payers, pharmacies and pharmaceutical manufacturers.

The Army began implementing RelayHealth in its medical treatment facilities across the globe in 2011, and currently, every region has at least one clinic already using the system.

RelayHealth is a completely secure portal that is compliant with the Federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA. Encryption technology and a stringent privacy policy protect patient personal information more securely than either the telephone or regular email. Patient information is only accessible by patients and their healthcare team.

Participating clinics at McDonald include Family Health, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Troop Medical 2.

Registering for RelayHealth is relatively simple. All patients have to do is provide an email address to the MCAHC staff. Patients will receive an invitation letter to join the RelayHealth system.

Upon receiving this invite, patients can go to the RelayHealth Website to set a username and password.

What do zombies, crash test dummies and ninja turtles all have in common? They could be seen flipping tires, pushing trucks and crawling through the sand at Langley Air Force Base, Va., Sept. 28, 2012.

The 633rd Communications Squadron recently hosted a 90-day weight-loss program to motivate Airmen to live a healthier lifestyle.

“We wanted to do something to get the Airmen to concentrate on fitness,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Michelle Filmore, 633rd CS infrastructure section chief. “We wanted to make it fun and keep them focused.”

The 633rd CS began the program July 16, with a weigh-in and work-out suggestions. Participants put together teams to motivate each other while working out together or whenever possible.

“The program really brought us together as a team to become a better Air Force,” said Staff Sgt. Susan Toy, “Cyber Ninja Turtles” team member. “It makes you more mentally and physically prepared for anything.”

Filmore encouraged teams to stay motivated every week.

“I sent out emails with special workouts and dif-

ferent things to keep it interesting and keep the Airmen involved,” said Filmore. “As the oldest woman in the competition, I wanted to show the young men and women that if I could do it, they could do it, too.”

The expeditionary fitness challenge, held at Eagle Park, was held to celebrate the end of the weight-loss program. The challenge was open to all Airmen in the 633rd CS, not just participants of the weight- loss program. The teams performed various timed events including pushing a truck from one checkpoint to another, low-crawling through sand, performing litter carries and flipping a large tire.

“The fitness challenge was amazing,” said Airman 1st Class Alexandra Ramos, “Fantastic 5” team member. “I could definitely feel how much I’ve improved my physical fitness, and I want to keep it up.”

The squadron wrapped up the program on Sept.

26 with participants weighing in. Participants competed for individual fat loss and weight loss, as well as team total-fat percentage loss. Approximately 30 Airmen participated, and shed a total of 249 pounds.

Nine teams competed in a variety of categories.

For instance, Team “Cyber Ninja Turtles” came in first place as the team with the best costumes and most team spirit. Winning teams for each category received either $100 to divide between team members, or a one-day pass for each member.

A deep breath, slowed heart rate, steadied hands...

One, two, three, release ... bull’s eye.

It is almost hunting season, and the Langley Air Force Base, Va., hunting program is back.

While it has been in place for more than 25 years, in 2010 construction on the Worley Road Bridge derailed the program. However, during the hiatus, the hunting program was revamped by its members. “We didn’t have operation instructions in place; the rules were a little bit relaxed. We formalized the entire process. So we lost the 2010 season, but were able to rewrite and change the program, making it safer,� said Maj. Samuel Gaglio, Air Combat Command Electronic Warfare Operations Branch chief. “It’s a great morale, welfare and recreation program. We got nothing but support from

the base leadership to bring it back.�

With the return of the program, members have access to roughly 400 acres of hunting grounds with tree stands in 100 of the acres, and two hunting sessions a day, in the morning and afternoon, both lasting three to four hours. Hunting is only allowed on Saturdays, holidays and ACC down-days. “I started hunting here in 2006; it’s been wonderful. It helps my morale,� said Tech.

Sgt. Uri Swindle, 1st Maintenance Squadron precision guided munitions supervisor. “It’s lot of camaraderie here on base. We are a close knit group.�

With more than 400 deer on LangleyAFB, the hunting program and U.S. Department of Agriculture have partnered to help keep the deer population under control. “We are helping out with the safety on the base by making sure there aren’t too many deer running around on the streets and on the ight line,â€? said Major Gaglio.

“I never was afraid of him,” she said.

“I didn’t really fear for my life until he had me by the throat in the air telling me ‘If I can’t have you, nobody can!’”

Avictim of domestic abuse – let’s call her Jane Doe – forced herself to hide the bruises. The embarrassment was too much for her to handle. She was the daughter of a Marine, after all, a good woman dedicated to her marriage. She was not meant for to look the way she did, or to feel the pain she felt.

During October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness month, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., community members strive to raise awareness of abuse and to make things right for victims like Jane.

Unfortunately, Jane’s husband, did not care about what was right.

Jane’s relationship with her husband did not begin violently, and she said she never saw it coming when they first wed. She even dropped out of college to be with her husband.

“At first, it was verbal,” said Jane. “He would say I wasn’t good enough for him or tell me how I was a bad wife.”

When her husband began cheating, she put her foot down.

Then it all changed.

“I confronted him about his adultery,” she said. “He thought a woman was supposed to be silent and obedient, so he started beating me to keep me quiet.”

Jane did not want to divorce her husband, due to her beliefs. When she finally contemplated leaving, she felt she would not be able to support herself without his income. Even when she worked up courage enough to leave, reality pushed her down again.

“After I finally felt able to leave him, I found out I was pregnant with my first son,” she said. “I knew I could barely support myself if I left him, let alone a baby boy.”

Having the baby gave her husband greater ability to burden her with guilt. Jane said he repeatedly told her that if she left, she would tear apart their family.

More than once, Jane recalled holding the baby in one hand while fighting her husband with the other.

Jane soon gave birth to a second boy, and became periodically homeless to stay away from her abusive spouse. She did not seek help at first, only confiding in a close friend. Jane said she could not face the embarrassment of having the community know of her and her husband’s problems, especially when the community viewed her husband so highly.

“He was a really good worker,” said Jane. “His friends would see him bring me flowers and see us like the epitome of a happy couple.”

Neighbors would call police after hearing crashes and yelling from the house, and the couple’s problem became more transparent at the hus-

band’s office.

Eventually, her story was leaked to local media.

“One morning I woke up and there, on the front of the newspaper, was a picture of me with my babies,” said Jane. “The headline was about how I was being abused – now everyone knew.”

Through tears, Jane explained the feeling of total embarrassment. At this point, Jane felt she could no longer love herself.

In the six years after Jane finally left her husband, she slowly but surely put her shattered life back together. She worked three jobs and volunteered at a women’s shelter.

Two years ago, her ex-husband apologized for what he did. Finally, Jane feels she is almost able to love herself again, and is looking forward to finally finishing her college degree.

Regrettably, the story of Jane is not uncommon. According to www.domesticviolencestatistics.org, a woman is assaulted or beaten every nine seconds. Domestic abuse is the leading cause of injury for women – more than rape, car accidents and muggings combined.

After four years without a rate increase, Air Force lodging rates went up Oct. 1, Air Force Personnel Center Officials said.

The increase is necessary to ensure Air Force lodging rates cover current operating and capital improvement costs, said Maj. Gen. A.J. Stewart, AFPC commander.

As an example, the $39 nightly room rate for a visiting quarters room rose to $53.25, and costs at temporary lodging facilities rose from $43 to $55 per night. Increased rates will fund costs for operations, room renovations and construction, Stewart said.

As the Air Force works to improve business processes, implement efficiencies and maintain lodging operations in a constrained budget environment, other adjustments may be necessary, according to Col. Thomas Joyce, director, AFPC Services Directorate.

“We are committed to keeping room rates as low as possible while providing clean, comfortable, quality facilities,” he said. “This is part of our commitment to caring for Airmen, and we take that obligation very seriously. However, we must be realistic, as well.”

Even with the rate increase, Air Force rates are lower than comparable commercial rates outside Air Force installations, he said.

“Coupled with quality service, clean facilities and reasonably priced room rates, Air Force lodging facilities are still a great choice for Airmen, whether they’re on temporary duty orders, retired and traveling, or just passing through,” Stewart said.

To make people more aware of domestic violence, Congress proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 1989 after an informal observance the previous two years.

Through the Family Advocacy Program, Linda Hough, 633rd Medical Group family advocacy outreach manager, and Maj. Shelia Beville, 633rd MDG family advocacy officer, dedicate themselves to preventing cases like Jane’s.

The youth center is hosting an Awareness Clothesline Activity, Oct. 15, from 4 to 5 p.m.

Also, the Russ Child Development Center is hosting a book-reading of “Hands Are Not for Hitting” on Oct. 17 from 10 to 11 a.m.

“Family advocacy is the military’s response to child and spouse abuse,” Hough said. “We offer prevention and treatment programs at a professional level.”

The Family Advocacy Program works to prevent family violence through public awareness campaigns, leadership training and community education. There are programs and resources within the program to help Service members and their spouses maintain a healthy relationship.

Following a week of intense physical and mental challenges, the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command selected Sgt. 1st Class Delroy Barnett as the 2012 Advanced Individual Training Platoon Sergeant of the Year at Fort Eustis, Va., Sept. 28.

Barnett, an AIT platoon sergeant assigned to the 32nd Medical Brigade at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, was selected from a pool of nine competitors in the week-long crucible, which saw the Soldiers stand before review boards, navigate obstacle courses, participate in combatives, qualify on weapons firing, complete an Army physical fitness test and execute long-distance road marches.

During the competition, competitors were purposely kept unaware of the order of the events. Barnett, a career combat medic, said that not knowing what to expect next kept him “mentally sharp” and prepared to tackle whatever obstacle came next.

“It was always a mystery to me what the next task would be, and it kept me on edge,” he said. “I didn’t know what to expect.”

Additionally, competitors received no feedback following each event. Sgt. 1st Class Paul Gehl, the 2011 AIT PSOY winner who lead the group of nine through this year’s competition, said the Soldiers were not evaluated as much on how they executed each task, but more on

how they trained Soldiers to execute said task ks – the core of what platoon sergeants are tasked to do.

Barnett did just that, compartmentalizing g the facets of the competition and “taking it one step aat a time.”

“I had to get through three levels of comp petitions to get to this point, so I’ve found a way thatt works for me,” he said. “I focus on one task at a time.”

As a result of his win, Barnett will serve a one-year tour at IMT CoE as an enlisted adviser, wh here he will provide ground-level experience and insig ght into the Army’s initial entry training. Gehl, who w will turn the reins over to Barnett, said this role is extrremely important, as it gives the adviser “a voice to o be heard across the Army,” and allows them to makee an impact Army-wide to AIT programs.

The AIT platoon sergeants are top-perforrming professional noncommissioned officers from v virtually all branches of the Army who play a critical rolee in the success of AIT training. After basic combat traaining, new Soldiers attend AIT, where they become expeerts in their specific military occupational specialties. T The platoon sergeants mentor these new Soldiers, worrking with them after classes and on weekends to teach h and reinforce technical lessons, warrior tasks and batttle drills.

Sgt. Maj. John Calpena, Initial Military y Training Center of Excellence command sergeant m major, emphasized the importance of the platoon sergeants’ role in maintaining force readiness, calling g them “the real deal behind the scenes.”

“They are the last line of defense. While drill sergeants make [recruits] into Soldiers and send them to platoon sergeants, it’s the platoon sergeants that bring them into our profession and get them qualified to be a part of an organization,” Calpena said. “They’re sending them into the operational Army- not to an instructor, not another phase of military training, but to a unit that’s probably about to deploy. They fight and claw to make sure everyone they send to the field is ready.

“They are the driving force to keep building our Army to the next level,” he added.

Barnett will soon travel to Washington, D.C., where he will receive the Sgt. 1st Class Finnis D. McCleery Award from Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno, and Sgt. Maj. of the Army Raymond Chandler in a special ceremony.

Looking forward, Barnett said that while earning the honor “means a lot” to him, he is moving along, anticipating a promotion to first sergeant and returning to training Soldiers.

“Now I know that I’m the best the Army has to offer, and it gives me confidence in going back to my unit striving to train my Soldiers the best way possible,” he said. “AIT platoon sergeants are entrusted to prepare our Soldiers to fight our nation’s wars, and I think they’re one of the best entities in the Army.”

From the moment U.S. Army Sgt. Hilton Hunter received his orders to his first duty station, he began to prepare himself for a journey that would take him from the football field to Afghanistan and beyond.

It was the fall of 1994, during his junior year at Norfolk State University, when he ran across the football field at William “Dick” Price Stadium for what would be his last time playing defense. Hunter, a student-athlete from Gloucester, Va., played strong safety for the Norfolk State Spartans football team. Although football was his passion, he was always determined to finish college and become a graphic arts designer. Later in the year, unexpected circumstances forced him to leave college for the workforce in order to support his family.

“After leaving school, I worked for seven years. I took on three different jobs trying to make ends meet,” said Hunter, who is currently assigned to Alpha Company of the Warrior Transition Unit. “I just got tired of working these random jobs; they weren’t

Hunter said he was not happy with his life, and seeing his family struggle added to his frustrations. Later, during the spring of 2003, after meeting with several military recruiters, he decided he was going to join the U.S. Army.

The average enlistee in the military, who usually has just a high-school diploma, initially makes about $43,000 a year, according to the Department of Defense. That includes a housing allowance, a subsistence allowance and federal tax advantages. Hunter was determined to provide a better life for his family,

and the military was his best option.

“I was so adamant about signing up, I told the Army recruiter he didn’t need to keep bugging me because my mind was made up. I was ready to leave that day,” he said.

Throughout basic training and the Army Advanced Individual Training, Hunter was faced with being a 34 year-old Soldier who seemed too old to have success in the military.

“I was one of the oldest recruits and students during AIT, and at first glance, people didn’t know what to expect from me.”

Hunter said he did not allow his age to hinder his progress. He was determined to go above and beyond, to be the best Solider possible during training.

“It was awkward at first, but I made it my mission to work just as hard or harder than some of the 19-year-old Soldiers. When they saw me passing them up, they soon started asking me for tips and advice,” he said.

“It was a known fact that the older guys couldn’t keep up, but not me. All I wanted to do [was] prove to everyone that I could perform and compete at the highest level.”

STORY FROM PAGE 14 Hunter met adversity with great accomplishments. After receiving his military occupation specialty as a motor transport operator, he finished in the top 10 percent of his AIT class.

“The turn of events was when I received orders to Fort Drum, NY. I was now 10 hours away from home, and I started to wonder if this was the change I was looking for. But I tried to remain focused because in my mind I knew it couldn’t get any worse than this.”

Being assigned to Fort Drum also helped him realize he had an advantage over most of the Soldiers in his division.

As he was older than many of the other Soldiers, he was also much more mature and disciplined.

“I believe I was at an advantage. A lot of the younger Soldiers were undisciplined and immature,” said Hunter. “So I capitalized on every chance I had to show that I could be a leader, but it took a lot of humility.”

Hunter did not like taking orders from his peers, who were younger and less experienced than himself. So he knew he had to make rank as fast as he could in order to be acknowledged as one of the leaders in the division.

“Everybody wanted to become a noncommissioned officer. I knew I had to make rank fast, so I seized every opportunity I could to learn about my MOS in order to make the next rank,” he said. “It took a lot of patience, sacrifice and dedication to stay focused and accomplish my goal.”

After receiving several promotions and awards, he finally achieved the success he

desperately sought. But without notice, he received deployment orders to Afghanistan, and everything changed.

It was at the height of the war in Afghanistan, when Hunter was driving a gun truck through a nearby city. An Afghani civilian tried to cut off his convoy of Army trucks from the 302nd Cargo Division. Several vehicles collided and Hunter was injured. He suffered a crushed vertebra in his neck, a torn meniscus in his knee and a severely sprained ankle.

“This was the worst experience of my life.

The accident ignited an angry mob of civilians swarming around the truck,” recalled Hunter. “They were yelling and screaming as if it was my fault. That period of my life...

I was definitly being tested.”

Shortly thereafter, Hunter was sent back to the United States in July 2011. Back with his wife and family, he was finally home, assigned to the WTU at Fort Eustis.

Hunter said when he looks back at that accident, he is grateful he did not lose his life. But the accident is not the only thing he often reflects on.

“There are so many teaching moments I’ve had over the course of my career, but I have no regrets,” he said. “The military is one of the greatest things that could have ever happened in my life.”

For now, Hunter’s time as a Soldier continues. However, when his medical evaluation is complete, his sights are set on reentering the workforce as a business owner.

“I want to continue to encourage those who serve,” said Hunter. “They too can overcome life’s challenges if they stay committed to their goals.”

Some of the other changes made to the hunting program included mandatory registration of weapons, as well as the mandatory wear of a safety harness while in tree stands, and a blaze-orange outer garment (vest or shirt) for 360 degree coverage and better hunter visibility. Each hunter is also asked to bring a walkie-talkie or cell phone for communication, so if an accident occurs, emergency personnel can quickly be notified. Additionally, each tree stand has a ribbon and a GPS coordinate attached to it so first responders will be able to get there quickly “Due to some of our rules, we are a little bit stricter here than public or private lands,” said Gaglio. “Your advantage to hunting on Langley is it’s a safer operation. We are very

flexible, just not with safety.”

Langley’s deer-hunting season begins Oct. 6 and ends Nov. 17 for archers (bow and crossbow). Firearm season (shotgun slug only) starts Nov. 17 and ends Jan. 5.

Newport News Fall Festival of Folklife

The 39th annual Newport News Fall Festival of Folklife will be held on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Newport News Park (intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Fort Eustis Boulevard). The festival will feature more than 200 exhibitors showcasing traditional crafts, heritage trade demonstrations, food and entertainment. Admission is free. The parking fee is $10 per vehicle on-site and at satellite areas (Greenwood Elementary School, Woodside High School). Free shuttle bus service will run between the satellite parking areas and the festival.

At the Pumpkin Patch area, children can choose a pumpkin ($1, small or $3, large), transport it by wheelbarrow to a decoration station, weigh it, and then record the weight and name on its “birth certificate.” Children can also enjoy free “make and take” crafts and fall-themed activities.

If one Airman runs an 18-watt compact fluorescent light bulb for one hour, it costs approximately five cents.

If the estimated 10,000 civilian employees and military members at Langley Air Force Base, Va., were to run one 18-watt CFL bulb for one hour simultaneously, it could cost roughly $500.

October is Energy Action Month, which promotes energy and water conservation awareness as part of a national campaign lead by the Department of Energy.

This year’s theme, “I Am Air Force Energy,” makes Airmen the heart of the campaign.

“In 2011, the Air Force spent $9.7 billion on fuel and electricity – more than twice what we spent ten years ago,” said Lt. Col. Dee Jay Katzer, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron commander. “Fuel and electricity now make up almost 10 percent of the Air Force’s budget, and every dollar we don’t spend on energy allows us to invest that dollar into you, your family and your mission.”

Throughout the month, Airmen are challenged to make a commitment to continual change in organizational and personal energy use.

Awareness is great, but action is better.

Airmen must create a culture where energy consideration is part of everything they do, every day, on and off duty.

“Our Airmen are innovators. They have identified new policies, processes and technologies to improve the ways we use energy,” said Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley. “We will look to their continued creativity and focus on energy to obtain an assured energy advantage in air, space and cyberspace.”

Maj. Gen. Timothy Byers, Civil Engineer, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., recommends taking a proactive approach to energy conservation in an edition of CEnterline, stating A-C-T-I-O-N is key.

Airmen can take action now in their everyday lives in several ways■ A – Appliance Reduction. Around the office and at home, seek out Energy Starqualified multi-function devices that provide multiple capabilities (print, scan, copy).

This not only saves energy, but also space.

■ C – Computer Logoff. Even though we cannot turn off our computers at the end of

the work day due to updates, we can logoff. This ensures the computers will go into sleep mode properly. Information Technology Power Management for the Air Force estimates this action alone can save more than $10 million a year.

■ T – Temperature Set-Points. Most bases use approximately 68 degrees in the winter and 78 degrees in the summer. Rather than using space heaters or fans, everyone should dress appropriately for the facility’s temperature.

■ I – Inform you facility manager. Report leaky faucets, blocked air vents, cracked windows and/or any other problems to your facility manager or CE customer service.

■ O – Outdoor conservation. Report instances like parking-lot lights left on during the day, or a broken sprinkler head dripping water, to CE customer service.

Corrective actions indoors and outdoors around base can have a huge impact on energy and water conservation goals.

■ N – No waste. Do not turn a blind eye.

Take action. If you see a problem, report it.

If you see something that does not need to be on, turn it off.

“If money is not coming directly out of your pocket, most times you are not as aware how much it costs,” said Airman 1st Class Thomas Anderson, 633rd Comptroller Squadron financial management technician.

When conserving energy resources, our nation can enjoy cleaner air and a healthier environment. We can also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which absorb and emit radiation within the thermal infrared range.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, in 2008, Americans reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the output of 29 million cars through energy-saving choices.

Each Airman is challenged to take action by reducing demand, increasing supply and making culture changes.

It starts with one individual.

“Our Airmen are the most powerful change agents the Air Force has to achieve our energy objectives,” said Katzer.

“Through their day-to-day activities and choices, they are having an impact on the Air Force’s efforts to maximize funds for operational needs and improve mission effectiveness.”
