‘Resolute Warriors’ welcome new leader

U.S. Army Col. Jennifer A. Reinkober assumed command of the 7th Sustainment Brigade from Col. Lawrence A. Kominiak during a change-of-command ceremony, Nov. 1 at McClellan Gym on Fort Eustis, Va. All participants in the ceremony, including Reinkober and Kominiak, wore Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment, and kept weapons at the ready – a testament to the battlefield experience of Kominiak, Reinkober and the Resolute Warriors of the 7th Sustainment Brigade.

Gen. Jeffrey N. Colt, deputy commanding general, 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, was proud and appreciative of Kominiak’s time as commander.

“This ceremony marks the end of another impressive chapter in the 7th Sustainment Brigade’s history...you (Kominiak) have done a fantastic job preparing your leaders and Soldiers in expertly

managing your resources as you accomplished every mission that came your way,” said Colt. “You have done a superb job. Peers and Soldiers can always count on your steadfast hand and your compassionate leadership... you are one of finest Soldier’s I have ever served with.”

Kominiak assumed command November 2010, and subsequently led the brigade headquarters to Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan from February 2011 to February 2012. The brigade provided sustainment support to U.S. and multinational forces operating in Regional Commands.

Upon returning to Fort Eustis, Kominiak lead the brigade as the Army transitioned from a combative position to sustainment. Kominiak will continue to his next assignment at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. “It has been an absolute honor and privilege to serve as your commander for the last two years. You are a team of warriors and professionals that provide world class sustainment support....your

hard work and dedication has forged this brigade’s reputation for absolute excellence,” said Kominiak. “I am extremely proud of you and the significant contributions you have made for the brigade, Army and our nation. I wish every 7th Sustainment Brigade Soldier the best.”

Reinkober brings a wealth experience to the brigade she once called home. She started her career in 1992 as platoon leader for the now deactivated 870th transportation company, 7th Transportation Group.

She feels just as confident now about her troops as she did then.

“I started as a second lieutenant at Fort Eustis, and was grateful for the opportunity to serve with such great noncommissioned officers and officers,” said Reinkober. “I feel grateful for the opportunity to serve the brigade again.”

Before recently graduating from the National War College, Fort McNair, Washington, D.C., Reinkober was the 18th Airborne Corps deputy G3 at Fort Bragg, N.C. She plans to take the brigade

into the future during the unit’s transition to an expeditionary brigade.

“Soldiers of the 7th Sustainment Brigade, you look fantastic out there! I look forward to serving as your commander as we embark on this next stage of the 7th’s journey,” said Reinkober. “We will continue to move forward together charting a new course for the brigade. Resolute, All the way!”

Toward the middle of the ceremony, everyone was reminded how important the “Resolute” brigade is for the Army as Colt concluded his remarks.

“To the Soldiers and leaders standing in formation that represent this great brigade and the multi talented logisticians, please know that you are the life blood of our war fighters, the life’s blood of our success,” said Colt.

“Your mission is vital to our success and the security of our country. I thank you for your service, leadership and for your many sacrifices. All the way! Resolute, Army Strong!”

Transportation Museum doles out tricks, treats

Beyond the curtains, the annals of the Army’s transportation history fall into darkness. Cobwebs, skeletons and eerie lights wash the museum’s exhibits in frightening livery, and unsuspecting toddlers ambling through the twists and turns of the halls have no idea what to expect around each terrifying turn.

Suddenly, a statue of a Soldier near a jeep starts to move. Children and their parents jump and shriek, not knowing what will happen next.

What happened could only be described in one word: candy!

This scene repeated itself time after time at the U.S. Army Transportation Museum on Halloween evening, as the museum hosted its third annual “Night at the Transportation Museum” event Oct. 31.

The event transformed the museum’s galleries into a haunted house, decorated with colored lighting and cobwebs.

The exhibits’ Soldier mannequins were accompanied by skeletal battle buddies in uniforms and volunteers handing out candy to young trick-or-treaters navigating through the museum.

After winding through the creepy

maze, children participated in a variety of crafts and activities, including Halloween coloring books.

Best of all, the event was free of charge to Fort Eustis families.

David Hanselman, the museum director, said the Transportation Museum provided the perfect stage for a spooky Halloween event.

“The concept was an easy one to imagine,” he said. “Just walking through the museum late at night with a flashlight showed us how easily the museum could be transformed into a fun and spooky experience.”

Hanselman started the spooky celebration three years ago. ““I had wanted to do a Halloween event here for several years,” Hanselman said. “The response was overwhelming and it has only grown with each year.”

With more than 500 guests visiting in 2010 and nearly 700 in 2011, Hanselman and his staff aimed for even more visitors this year.

However, their optimism began to sink as Hurricane Sandy approached the coast, dropping heavy rain and bringing floodwater s to the area.

For safety’s sake, the museum postponed the event to Halloween, having

been previously scheduled a few days prior so as not to compete with community trick-or-treating.

Despite the postponement, attendance increased yet again this year, with 811 people visiting the museum during the three-hour event. The museum doled out candy to 550 children. Hanselman said that the event fielded 4.5 people per minute.

“We were very happy that the local community still came out and had a great time here. I believe the highlight for all of us was right before we opened the doors, you could see a line of kids in costume and their parents anxiously waiting to be entertained,” he said. “We put a ton of work into this event and it is over in three hours, but when you see the smiles and excitement on the faces of so many kids and you know you are providing a safe, fun and non-scary event for the parents, it is all totally worth it.”

Post resident Sara Perez couldn’t agree more with Hanselman, and brought her young son Benjamin, 3, out for his first time trick-or-treating.

“We really like what they did here for families. We’re still going to do door-todoor, but this was a nice option especially for younger kids,” Perez said, patient-

ly holding her son’s Spider-Man mask as he snacked on candy. “Plus, if the weather isn’t good or it’s too cold and you don’t want to walk really young kids around out there, this is perfect.”

Hanselman said the success of the event would not be possible without his dedicated team of foundation members and volunteers who put the time and effort into transforming the museum into a virtual haunted house, and for enthusiastically working to entertain the crowds.

“The best thing I heard from a volunteer was late at night as they were leaving.

I thanked them again for helping out and they turned to me and said, ‘No, thank you for letting us be a part of this,’” Hanselman said. “That is when you know that you have something good.”

Just ask Army Staff Sgt. Josh Ricketts, a Fort Campbell (Ky.)-based Soldier attending professional military education at Fort Eustis. Ricketts donned a throwback Army uniform to hand out treats to young guests at the event.

“As part of our PME, [noncommissioned officers] must volunteer in the community to satisfy graduation requirements, so I signed up to do this,” he said. “It was more fun than I expected. Seeing the kids enjoy it made me enjoy it even more.”

For 20 years, each Wednesday morning, military and civilians of all ranks have met for a dose of fellowship and faith at Langley Air Force Base, Va.’s Chapel Annex.

The Langley Bible study has kept spirits high, and allowed attendees to enjoy camaraderie devoted to encouragement and nurturing of the soul.

“Spiritual fitness is one of four key pillars with our Comprehensive Airmen Fitness, and this Bible study gathering is an outward demonstration that our hope and strength is not limited to our own abilities, but also comes from our relationship with our creator God,” said Col. Jim Browning, Air Combat Command deputy command chaplain. “This group meets weekly to study the Bible and to take its precepts for a personal application. In doing so, we not only encourage one another, but we also grow in our own level of resilience and faith.”

The Bible study started in 1992 under the leadership of retired Brig. Gen. Dick

Abel, former Director of Public Affairs, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, and retired Lt. Gen. Steve Croker, former Vice Commander of Air Combat Command.

“Some may not attend church, but come here because it’s a friendly get-together that’s non-threatening,” said Abel. “It’s a spiritual injection in the middle of the week that sets them on the right track.”

To mark the 20th anniversary of this Bible study, a number of current and past attendees were asked to share some of their reflections from the Wednesday morning get-together. Retired Chief Master Sgt. Harold Bromell has been attending the Bible study since 2001, and echoed Abel’s remarks when he said the study is a “mid-week pick-me-up,” and has made a significant impact in his life.

Fellowship, mentorship and accountability are some of the best aspects of the Bible study. Often, people will transfer to another base, but come back to visit the Bible study during a TDY trip to Langley.

It is a testament to the stability and loyal fellowship resident in those who attend the study.

Jack Catton summed up his experience at the Bible study by saying, “The Langley AFB Bible study provided me with accountability to strive for a life of integrity and moral character at work and at home. The study averages 25 to 30 attendees per week, and begins with prayer. The group then delves into a Bible lesson and discussion applicable to all.

Topics rotate frequently so that newcomers, and those who must miss due to temporary duty and deployment, can come in without feeling behind.

“These lessons re-energize military members who work very hard,” said Retired Col. Chuck Macri, National Director of Cru, Military Ministry. “It’s a way to boost motivation and keep their efforts high for the Air Force.”

Flying monkeys, talking dogs and guides for saving money; what do these three items have in common?

The answer is simple: all these items can be found in the books and DVDs located in the Groninger Library at Fort Eustis, Va. The library, which is located at the Washington Boulevard trafďŹ c circle on post, offers more than 56,000 different items to customers including books, magazines, newspapers, audio books, DVDs and college textbooks, and is open to all active duty service members, dependents, civilians and contractors.

Valerie Fashion is the head librarian at the facility, and brings with her 30 years of experience. “We have many items available for checkout by our customers,� Fashion said. “We also have computers and a Wi-Fi network available for their use.�

The library currently has 12 computers available to anyone with an ID card, and a 24-hours-aday, 7-days-a-week public Wi-Fi network available. However, for those planning on checking out an item, they will need a common access card or a dependent ID card.

The library also offers a variety of programs to its patrons. “Beside the many items we have for checkout to our customers, we also have some great programs available,� Fashion said. “Some of those programs include arts and crafts, weekly story

time and reading programs.�

Currently, the library is hosting the following events: â– It’s Story Time – Every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. For those in the age range of infants to 6-years-old. â– Holiday Crafts – Nov. 10 and Dec. 8. Leslie Cruz, a library patron, and her 9-yearold daughter Jocelyn visit the library often and participate in these programs. “This is one of the nicest post library’s I’ve been to,� Cruz said. “We enjoy coming here because of the variety of items and events they have to offer.�

Cruz mentioned how important it was for the post to have a facility like this for her daughter to participate in arts and crafts while socializing with other kids. “My daughter Jocelyn recently participated in the libraries summer reading program,� Cruz said. “She read almost 100 books in about two months.�

With 10 new DVDs and new books arriving monthly, there is always something new to check out.

‘Airman’ magazine unveils new digital version A year after publishing the ďŹ nal print edition of Airman magazine, the Air Force is unveiling a new digital version of the service’s ofďŹ cial magazine speciďŹ cally geared for tablet devices. “Built speciďŹ cally for Apple and Android tablet users, this new format gives readers all the in-depth feature stories and spectacular photos they’ve come to expect from Airman magazine and adds layers of multimedia content and interactivity only available through new publishing techniques,â€? said Preston Keres, Airman editor-in-chief. “We are very excited to release this ďŹ rst new issue, and begin a new era for telling the Airman’s story.â€?

In addition to stunning photography, compelling copy, great video, interactive content and design, Keres said the staff is proud that they are able to bring back the monthly publishing schedule.

For the past year, the Airman editorial staff and design team have posted original content to the Airman website at http://airman.dodlive.mil, which will remain current after the launch of the new tablet magazine. The website will contin-

ue as the home of Airman and will feature extra and exclusive staff-produced content, as well as strong feature stories, images and multimedia from the ďŹ eld.

The website, however, was never

meant to replace the printed magazine.

Budget efďŹ ciencies in 2011 led to the elimination of the printing budgets for all agship service magazines. At that time, the Airman editorial staff and design team

were reduced to only one full-time employee each, during a BRAC move that consolidated most agship service products at the Defense Media Activity.

One veteran designer, Luke Borland, made the move from San Antonio to Fort Meade and became the chief of the Airman design team. His enthusiasm for the new technologies just coming onto the scene was critical to developing a plan and building a team that could exploit new tools and processes to bring Airman readers the same kinds of stories in new and exciting ways. “Loss of the printed magazine was a little sad, but not unexpected, and in some ways a pleasant change,� he said. “While some people may miss having the paper in their hands, these new tablet platforms still allow you to hold something, have the same feel, but get so much more out of the product.�

In rebuilding, Borland and his team spent a great deal of time getting a broader understanding of digital design tools to get the most from new multimedia content, learning about publishing to the different SEE MAGAZINE PAGE 11

“There are things we want to do that just are not possible yet with the current publishing tools. But what we have been able to do so far is amazing,” said Borland. “We want to push the technology to its maximum potential and give our readers that immersive experience.”

One thing Borland said he wants Airman readers to know, whether they started reading 50 years ago or yesterday, is that in this new era, the magazine will remain the same trusted source it has always been.

“We’re still telling the stories of everyday Airmen and Air Force heroes. It’s a deeper form of the magazine, it’s the added layers to the presentation that just make it a richer experience for the reader, but it holds true to the integrity of Airman.”

While Borland and the design team worked on the technical side to get ready for digital publishing, the creative staff was also working hard to capture stories in new ways and develop ideas that would lend themselves to the new format.

The new magazine was previewed over the last couple of weeks, with many readers already downloading it from their app stores. Early adopters and those who follow Air Force and Airman social media outlets were given download links. The staff also sought the opinions of some Air Force and media industry leaders before today’s publication date.

“Airman magazine now as an app – what a fantastic way to read these stories and showcase the amazing photography

“I love how the magazine comes to me on the iPad – I can read it whenever I want to. I used to glance at the site in my browser but with the new platform, it has drawn me in to read it from cover to cover,” added Epstein.

This new interactive digital format makes storytelling fun. We can push the boundaries of what people have previously thought of as a magazine. Reading Airman is now a personal experience and the reader feels engaged with the subject.”

One of the most important technological advances Keres brought to the Airman team was non-narrative video storytelling using digital single lens reflex, or DSLR cameras. Until recently, most digital cameras used by professional photojournalists shot individual still frames. Now some of them give the reporters and photographers the capability to capture high definition video in the field. AF officials delay MilPDS upgrade

Air Force officials are delaying the upgrade of the Military Personnel Data System that was originally scheduled for December.

The 733rd Mission Support Group is preparing to host Joint Base Langley-Eustis’ inaugural Industry Training Day, Nov. 14 at the Fort Eustis Club. The event aims to provide Virginia employers with helpful information on how to fully utilize qualiďŹ ed veterans entering the civilian workforce.

The event, a cooperative between JBLE and the Virginia Department of Veterans Services, will feature representatives from the Army Career and Alumni Program, Air Force and Army leadership, and industry professionals teaching employers how to successfully recruit veterans.

Terrie Suit, the Virginia Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security, will be the keynote speaker.

According to Reba Gordon, the Fort Eustis ACAP Transition Services manager, employer representatives will learn how to interpret military personnel documents, such as DD Form 214, CertiďŹ cate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, which helps match veterans to job opportunities based on their applicable military experience. “There’s so much talent coming out of the military, a lot of which these companies can take advantage of,â€? she said. “We want our veterans to have opportunities outside of uniform. To ensure this hap-

pens, we plan to give companies the information they need to put Service members to work.�

Additionally, companies will receive information about the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, or ASVAB, transitioning from military to civilian lifestyles, employer support for National Guardsmen and reservists, and education about post-traumatic stress disorder. Gordon said the team hopes to separate fact from ďŹ ction about veterans with PTSD, and provide hiring agents information to help vets overcome social stigmas in the job market.

The industry day is part of the state’s Virginia Values Veterans initiative, a program designed to capitalize on the state’s pool of veterans seeking jobs following their military commitment.

Per the V3 website, the program is designed “to incentivize Virginia companies of all sizes to acquire and retain veterans for at least one year. The goal is to not only drive down veteran unemployment but leverage this tremendous American resource to accelerate Virginia’s economic recovery.�

Gordon said she hopes to entertain at least 50 organizations at the event. Companies of any size are invited to attend to learn how to become V3 certiďŹ ed. Continental breakfast and lunch are provided to registrants. The industry day runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

With the sudden sound of an alarm, hands began searching frantically for gear. Boots, helmets and gloves were strewn across the cold, concrete floor. Every movement made was motivated by a sense of purpose - this was the very moment they had been preparing for.

Surrounded by fire trucks and spectators, members of Team 1 hurriedly donned their bunker gear, letting the adrenaline take over as they rushed over to a fire hose.

At the fire department on Langley Air Force Base, Va., team members, paired with chaplains, cheered each other on as they executed the first fire department Chaplain’s Challenge, Nov. 1, 2012.

“The intent of the Chaplain’s Challenge was to help us learn what our Airmen do in a particular department in a fun, competitive way,” said Chaplain Capt. David Barns, 633rd Air Base Wing chaplain. “They test their job knowledge in a competitive environment, and they’re handicapped with a chaplain on each team, teaching us what they do.”

Although this is the first time the Chaplain’s Challenge has been done with the fire department, it has already been done with several other agencies on base, said Barns. The feedback from the Chaplain’s Challenge is always positive, he said.

The chaplains spent the day going through the process of

being a firefighter. From gettting fitted with gear, to learning to throw a fire ho ouse and tying equipment, the training the chap plains received from their fire department teamm mates was sure to prepare them for a successful ch hallenge.

“By that time, what we’ve done is developed relationships with the Airrmen,” said Barns.

“The objective is – by them m getting to know us, they feel more comfortable calling us for counseling, or whatever might be going on. They feel comfortable asking uss the questions they can’t ask anyone else.”

In this particular challengee, members of the fire department were split in tea ams of two, each one having a chaplain on their team. “It was challenging,” said Barns. “I was surprised how much energy it took to use the hose!”

After the last challenge, both teams and observers enjoyed a pizza social in the kitchen, where the losing team had to serve the wining team.

“They like the camaraderie that builds with it,” said Chaplain Capt. Michael McDonald, 633rd Air Base Wing chaplain. “This also breaks down the barriers. If they’ve got an issue, they feel more comfortable talking to us later on, as we’re the helping agency that you can come to and feel safe.”

According to Senior Airman Antonio Blackwell, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron firefighter, the objectives and sentiments of the chaplains definitely came across through the competition.

“We had good participation, and everyone enjoyed themselves,” said Blackwell. “It builds morale and makes it easier to come to the chaplain.”

It is the nature of any competition to have a winning and losing team, but after an event such as the Chaplain’s Challenge, it is clear that no matter what the outcome, the experience is both rewarding and uplifting for all those involved.

“It was nice to break up the monotony of our usual training with something fun, fun,” said Airman 1st Class Kyle Rogers. “It was a great experience, and I’d definitely like for them to bring it here again.”

Federal Employee Dental and Vision Insurance Program FEDVIP provides supplemental dental and vision insurance coverage. It is group coverage on an enrollee-pay-all basis. Seven plans offer dental benefits, and three plans offer vision benefits, including regional, national and international coverage. The three enrollment categories available are self only, self plus one, and self and family. Coverage and benefits vary, but they generally include preventivecare services, oral and eye exams, orthodontia, and a variety of eye- and oral-care products and procedures.

FEDVIP and FEHB are entirely separate programs.

The Army Medical Evaluation Board process has been renamed as the Integrated Disability Evaluation System, and revised to combine the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs disability claim processes.

Prior to this revision, when Soldiers became ill or injured, they would go through the MEB process to determine if they are ďŹ t to serve and later ďŹ le a claim with Veterans Affairs. Now, they are able to ďŹ le their claim with the VA while being evaluated by the Army.

Another change to the former process was the addition of the Medical Evaluation Board Counsel. Soldiers in the MEB process now have access to an attorney to assist them in understanding the MEB process, and their basic rights as they go through it. Evaluation Board, which is where the ďŹ t or unďŹ t determination is made.

Nicholas Maurer, the MEB Attorney, and Patrice Jones, MEB Para-legal, assist service members in understanding the Narrative Summary, in addition to the ratings they receive from the Army and VA. Maurer also offers guidance as to how to gather appropriate medical evi-

dence that may not ordinarily be considered in a case.

Natick engineer looks at football technology to improve Soldiers’ helmets

Whether someone absorbs a hit by an improvised explosive device or a charging linebacker, the effect can be devastating on the human brain.

Knowing that, researchers from the Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center are examining technology developed at the University of Southern Mississippi for football helmets that could one day also help protect Soldiers.

A liner system designed at the Southern Mississippi polymer science laboratory, with assistance from the school’s sports medicine department, has been used in the Neuro Responsive Gear, or NRG, helmet produced by Rawlings Sporting Goods. The NRG features a system that combines foam and air bladders to more effectively absorb impacts. The helmet is being used in the National Football League and in the college ranks.

Don Lee, a project engineer in the Headgear Thrust Area of NSRDEC, is now looking at how that technology could apply to military helmets.

“I was approached by the University of Southern Mississippi early last summer,” Lee said. “They had gotten wind that we were doing helmet work, and they had been doing a lot of work with Rawlings on a pneumatic liner system for football helmets, mainly.

“They ended up coming up here and bringing one of their prototype liner systems, and we went over to the helmet lab here at the base and we tested the helmet.

It actually showed some good prelimi-

nary data for an un-optimized system.”

Lee works to prevent traumatic brain injuries, or TBIs. He understands that once damaged, the brain can’t repair itself and the injury is permanent. He sees potential in the University of Southern Mississippi system.

As Lee has pointed out, Soldiers and athletes are equally vulnerable to TBI. Increasingly, the military, academia and the sports industry are sharing information on the subject.

“We’re all tied in together, supporting each other,” Lee said. “It’s not like we’re all working inside a vacuum. Right now, the commonality is protecting the head, and that’s what’s tying everything together.

“There’s a lot of talk of crossover (in) protecting Soldiers, protecting players.

I think that’s what led Southern Mississippi to us. That’s the commonality, is the (mild traumatic brain injury). I just think it’s going to be an issue that’s going to be going on for a long time.”

Lee visited University of Southern Mississippi’s polymers lab and sports medicine department and came away impressed with the work they are doing

Because the University of Southern Mississippi liner system uses different airfilled chambers, it has possible advantages that other pneumatic systems lacked.

“There’s a lot of talk of crossover (in) protecting Soldiers, protecting players. I think that’s what led Southern Mississippi to us. That’s the commonality, is the (mild traumatic brain injury). I just think it’s going to be an issue that’s going to be going on for a long time.”

“If you put a large weight in your helmet like a night-vision device, all the air would be pushed out of that bag into bags in the back,” said Lee of the old systems, “and then you’d have a stability issue when you actually have the helmet sliding down your face.”

Leveraging different polymers, chambering and their relationship with Rawlings, the University of Southern Mississippi “actually produced a liner that received a five-star safety rating for football helmets. It just shows that we’re all fighting the same fight – trying to mitigate brain injury.”

Lee said he’s reluctant to ignore any system that shows potential for helping Soldiers.

“You get people (saying), ‘Why are you looking at all this stuff?’” Lee said. “It’s turning over all the rocks and leaving no stone unturned.”

Senior quarterback Trent Steelman rushed for 101 yards and threw for another 100 to help Army secure a 41-21 victory over Air Force, Saturday in front of more than 37,700 fans at Michie Stadium in West Point, N.Y. A stout Army defense limited Air Force to just one touchdown in the first three quarters and took the first step toward winning the Commander in Chief’s Trophy. The trophy, for service academy supremacy, will be decided with the ArmyNavy Game, Dec. 8, in Philadelphia.

Steelman completed 4 of 6 passes for 100 yards and also rushed 29 times for 101 yards and two scores. Sophomore running back Larry Dixon picked up 89 yards on 18 carries, junior running back Raymond Maples battled for 73 yards on 20 touches, and sophomore running back Trenton Turrentine collected 47 yards.

Sophomore linebacker Geoffrey Bacon led the Army defense with 13 tackles and an interception while senior bandit Nate Combs was credited with eight stops, two tackles for losses, an interception and a

pass breakup.

Army blew open a 7-7 game by scoring 28 consecutive points through the second and third quarters and posted its first win over Air Force since 2005, a 27-24 victory in Colorado Springs, Colo. The last time Army beat Air Force at Michie Stadium was in 1996.

The Black Knights’ defense limited Air Force, the No. 2 rushing team in the nation prior to the game, to just 103 yards on 43 carries. Quarterback Connor Dietz completed 10 of 17 passes for 185 yards but was intercepted twice.

Army won the coin toss from Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and elected to receive. It took 13 plays for Army to chew up 66 yards and take a 7-0 lead after eating up more than 6:30 off the clock. Maples had 14 yards on the first two plays of the game.

Steelman collected 14 on a pair of runs and Turrentine broke off a 17-yard gain to keep the chains moving. Steelman capped the drive with a four-yard scoring run and kicker Dan Grochowski’s extra point.

Air Force tied the game on the ensuing possession with a 65-yard drive. The pos-

session was aided by two Army penalties and concluded with a one-yard scoring run by Wes Cobb.

The Black Knights’ defense came up with a big stop early in the second quarter when sophomore lineman Richard Glover and Combs teamed to stuff Dietz on fourthand-goal from the one-yard line. Air Force expressed an interest to challenge the spot but the power was out at the stadium and instant replay was unavailable.

After the change of possession,Army went on top to stay, moving 96 yards in 11 plays after Grochowski kicked a 20-yard field goal.

Rookie defensive back Brandon Fusilier-Jeffires recorded his first career interception to help Army take a 17-7 lead. He returned the interception seven yards before Steelman bulled his way in from two yards deep late in the first half.

Air Force went three-and-out to open the second half and a 12-play drive netted 54 yards and a 27-7 Army lead. Maples picked up 11 yards on the first play and then later gathered eight yards. Dixon carried on the last two plays of the drive, including a six-yard scoring run.

Nomination deadline approaching for Military Child of the Year award An organization whose primary mission is to provide emergency ďŹ nancial and other services to the families of service members and wounded warriors is opening nominations for one of their top recognition programs.

Operation Homefront, a non-profit organization formed shortly after 9/11 to support families of deployed service members, is accepting nominations for the 2013 Military Child of the Year.

The award is presented to children representing each branch of the ser-

vice who have demonstrated resiliency, leadership and achievement and have shown themselves as exceptional citizens while facing the challenges of military life.

While not a prerequisite, the average nominees have moved ďŹ ve times or more during their lives, and have experienced at least one parent deployed for 18 months or more.

They have usually volunteered with service groups on average 75 hours or more during the year. Most nominees have maintained above average grades, excelled in sports, theater or

music and have held leadership positions in school or with community groups.

Deadline for submission is Dec. 15 at 11:45 p.m. (Central Standard Time).

The annual award will be presented April 11, 2013, at the Ritz-Carlton in Pentagon City, Arlington, Va. In addition to a trip to the nation's capital, winners will receive a laptop computer and a $5,000 prize.

Federal Flexible Spending Account During this open season, eligible employees may enroll in the FSAFEDS program for calendar year 2013. The three types of FSA accounts are the Health Care FSA, Limited Expense Health Care FSA and the Dependent Care FSA. The FSAFEDS program allows federal employees to set aside pre-tax money for a wide range of medical and dependent care expenses should they incur eligible expenses and require reimbursement.

Employees who are eligible to enroll in the FEHB pro-

gram may participate in the FSAFEDS program, even if they are not currently enrolled. Employees who enroll in one of the high deductible health plans and are eligible for a health savings account may not have a regular Health Care FSA account, but may enroll in the LEX Health Care FSA. All employees with qualiďŹ ed dependents may enroll in a Dependent Care FSA, except temporary employees with no ďŹ xed work schedule whose tour of duty is six months or less.

The 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron from Langley Air Force Base, Va., sent a team of eight members along with two water pumps and equipment for approximately 30 days to New York on Nov. 2, in support of Hurricane Sandy relief operations.

“In any emergency event, we’re on call and always available 24/7,” said Master Sgt. Charles VanPelt, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron Operations Support superintendent.

In less than a 24-hr period, the Air Combat Command unit stood ready with personnel and equipment. The team of eight consisted of two structural experts, an electrician, entomologist, heavy equipment operator and three water and fuel specialists. They transported the pumps to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., and met with the 331st Air Expeditionary Group to travel to New York and help with recovery operations as needed.

The preparation of equipment and personnel is fundamental to making a successful journey to New York, or anywhere the team may be needed.

“It’s very important that we can supply any location in order to fly, fight and win no matter what the mission,” VanPelt said. “We make sure our team is fully functional and able, whether it is a natural disaster such as this or our normal Air Force mission.”

A team of nearly 50 Air Force civil engineers from duty locations across the country pulled together to form the 331st Air Expeditionary Group this week, to pump flood waters affecting New York coastal communities following Hurricane Sandy.

The 331st AEG assembled here Saturday, with engineers from Hurlburt Field, Fla.; Joint Base Andrews, Md.; Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va.; Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho; and Ellsworth AFB, S.D.; led by a command team from Nellis AFB, Nev. The team received additional equipment contributed by Offutt AFB, Neb., and Holloman AFB, N.M. and staged out of JB MDL facilities to support relief operations.

“The whole Joint Base MDL community has been extremely responsive and helpful in facilitating our support mission currently taking place in the New York City area where flood waters have devastated communities,” said Col. Darren Bishop, 331st AEG commander and the 99th Mission Support Group commander from Nellis AFB. “The Resource Control Center equipped us with extra cots and sleeping bags for forward deployment, the 305th

Air Mobility Wing gave us hangar space to stage assets, the87th Civil Engineer Squadron gave us trailer hitches and fixed office heat for us, the Logistics Readiness Squadron cut emergency fuel keys for us, and the list goes on and on.”

According to Bishop, the 331st AEG is part of a joint service mission supplying forces to “Task Force Pump” to ensure Department of Defense pumping assets are pooled and utilized effectively and efficiently to support relief efforts. The task force has partnered with the New York Fire Department to determine the priority in which locations should receive pumping support to remove flood waters from critical areas.

“This team is a combination of Red Horse and Prime BEEF engineers from several locations, and we were all eager to respond and help out in any way we can to provide relief to these communities that have lost so much during this disaster,” said Capt. Eric Rosenlof, Officer in Charge of the 331st AEG engineers sent to Fort Hamilton, N.Y., originally assigned to the 823rd Red Horse Squadron out of Hurlburt Field, Fla. The 331st AEG split up into several teams in order to provide pump support in various locations at once. The first team arrived

at the Rockaway, N.Y., Wastewater Treatment Facility and learned quickly how important their mission was going to be.

“We were told that we need to help clear water from one tank to another so that each tank can be cleaned of sludge and debris, one at a time,” said Staff Sgt. Paul Clayborn, originally of the 823rd Red Horse Squadron from Hurlburt Field, Fla. “Each of the four tanks being cleared holds 500,000 gallons of water and blockages in these tanks forces sewage water back into the bay, so we need to help get them cleared out as soon as possible.”

Another team removed water from a parking lot down the road in Rockaway, then made their way to Breezy Point to help families clear flood waters from their homes.

“Breezy Point is one of many hard hit areas and is still without power and water as most of the homes are badly damaged or destroyed,” said Master Sgt. Steven Rector, team lead originally of the 366th CES from Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. “Our team helped local residents pump out driveways and submerged areas so residents could salvage and recover personal property.”

Eleven miles away, the next team arrived in Coney Island to pump water from basements ravaged by the storm,

while a fourth team cleared water from a parking garage in Brooklyn.

“Local residents have tried for the last week to pump the parking garage out with little success,” said Tech.l Sgt. James Duhon, team lead originally of the 633rd CES from JBLE, Va. “Our team had it pumped half way down in the first couple hours before identifying a water main break inside the garage keeping it from being emptied. The water break was isolated and shut-off and pumping operations resumed. By late afternoon the basement parking garage was drained and our task was completed.”

After the first day of pumping operations, with more to be done, a timeline for how long these efforts will continue is unclear.

“I can’t offer a forecast as to how long the 331st AEG will be here,” Bishop said.

“But I can tell you that we are honored to be doing this mission and will stay as long as we can to support relief operations.”

Army North supporting Sandy disaster response ARMY NORTH PAO

As the scope of Hurricane Sandy’s devastation began to unfold, U.S. Army North prepositioned coordinating elements in the most devastated areas to help support local, state and federal response efforts.

“It is our hope and our feeling that when they see a uniform that they’ll get a sense of calm and confidence that someone is there who wants to help them out,” said Lt. Col. Michael Brough, COIC team leader, Army North.

Army North, as the Joint Force Land Component Command, or JFLCC, of U.S. Northern Command, activated Joint Task Force, Civil Support, headquartered at Fort Eustis, Va., to serve as the JFLCC Coordinating Element at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. The unit’s mission is to coordinate for military units conducting missions in affected regions of the Eastern seaboard.

Army North immediately deployed six of its 10 defense coordinating elements, which are co-located with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s, or FEMA, regional headquarters throughout the nation, to

Trenton, N.J.; Charleston, W.Va.; Philadelphia; Maynard, Mass.; Brooklyn and New York City to coordinate Department of Defense support to the FEMA and other response elements.

For those in the JFLCC Coordination Element, or JCE, managing the large influx of DOD forces into New York, New Jersey and other affected states is an important task.

“Being here, we contribute in a different way,” said Staff Sgt. Elsie Muniz, human resources noncommissioned officer, JCE. “We ensure people are accounted for and that we have the right amount of people to do the job. These relief operations are fully underway; we’re reassuring the people that we’re here to help them, and we’re here to ensure this is getting done.”

The Houston native said helping people is why she joined the Army.

“I love what I do; I love helping people,” said Muniz. “As an NCO in the Army, there’s nothing better.”

From Army North’s 24-hour Combined Operations and Integration Center, or COIC, military planners, in conjunction with defense coordinating elements, mon-

itored and assisted “unwatering” missions to clear NYC subways, tunnels, water treatment plants and other critical sites; they helped with debris clearing; with the establishment of gasoline and diesel fuel points for first responders and residents; aerial assessment missions; transportation of utility crews and other responders into the affected areas; evacuation of patients from flooded medical facilities or facilities that lost power; and many other lifesaving and life-sustaining missions.

“In the COIC, we provide situational awareness to the commander,” said Javier Sosa, COIC operations specialist, Army North. “We identify needs, track the evolving situation and coordinate to quickly get personnel, equipment and capabilities where they are needed most.”

More than 450 personnel from Army North have deployed to locations in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C., with more personnel on the way. Many units are supporting DOD efforts in northeast, including engineer companies, medical units, airlift supports units, logistics units, refueling,

and contracting units.

“I’ve worked brigade deployments into theater, but this far more complex,” said Master Sgt. Alexis Howard, enlisted strength manager, Army North. “There are active and Guard units from all over the country moving to multiple locations throughout the area of operations.”

Some 7,400 National Guard members from across 14 states have provided sustained support to impacted regions.

Guardsmen have rescued more than 2,000 people from flood zones, delivered 144,000 meals and provided cargo plane transportation for first responders to restore power and provide critical supplies.

While the East Coast continues to make strides to return to normalcy and the overwhelming woes of Sandy continue to persist, JFLLC stands ready to provide assistance.

“The president has given us the mission to get the power restored and things back to a state of normalcy as soon as possible,” said Col. Dick Francey, Army North’s Chief of Staff. “I think it will be a while. It was a pretty significant strike they took.”

MOAA educational loans and grants Online applications are available for the Military Officers Association of America Educational Assistance Programs for the 2013-14 school year. Students can apply for interest-free loans and grants, which are awarded annually for up to five years of undergraduate study (or until a student graduates). America’s 398 national parks will offer the public free admission Nov. 10-12 during Veterans Day weekend in honor of those who serve and have served in the U.S. military, according to a National Park Service news release.

“National parks preserve places that commemorate our country’s collective heritage – our ideals, our majestic lands, our sacred sites, our patriotic icons – which our military has defended through the years,” National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis said in the release.

“We are grateful for the service and sacrifice of military members, past and present, and honored to tell their story at many of our national parks,” Jarvis added.

From frontier forts to World War II battlefields, more than 70 national parks have direct connections to the military, the release said. These include the earliest national parks, where Army engineers designed park roads and buildings and the cavalry enforced regula-

tions from 1886 until the National Park Service was established in 1916.

National parks throughout the country will hold special events to commemorate Veterans Day, according to the release. Highlights include: ■ Evening candlelight tours of Vicksburg National Cemetery, Miss., where visitors will encounter historical per-
