With the daily drumbeat of news and rumors surrounding uncertainty of Army funding levels, Gen. Robert W. Cone, commanding general of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, hosted a town hall forum to share information directly with the TRADOC civilian workforce, Feb. 7 at Jacob’s Theater on Fort Eustis.

“I have learned during my time in the Army that communication is critical when you are going through a tough situation or are dealing with a lot of uncertainty,” Cone said. “I may not have all of the information you want at this time, but I want to make sure that we all have a shared view of the situation.”

The fiscal uncertainty for the Army’s budget is created by a one-two punch of operating under a continuing resolution with funding levels locked at the 2012 fiscal year rate, and the potential cuts, or sequestration, that are set to take effect March 1.

Cone told the standing-room only crowd of TRADOC civilians and their supervisors that the command’s potential share of the Army’s budget reductions is about 20 percent of the total budget for fiscal year 2013.

TRADOC is following the secretary of defense’s guidance to take immediate actions to reduce spending and conduct necessary planning in preparation for potential funding reductions.

Cone said he is confident in the command’s plan to address potential shortfalls and thanked the teams led by Ellen Helmerson, TRADOC’s deputy chief of staff for personnel, and Matt Scully, TRADOC’s deputy chief of staff for resource management.

“We’re dealing with the finest personnel and budget people that I have ever seen, and I will tell you -- I wouldn’t want anybody else running this operation,” Cone said. “You’ve got the right people at the helm in this regard.”

such as limiting temporary duty travel, curtailing conferences and finding other efficiencies have helped to dampen the magnitude of potential budget cuts.

“Because of the great work you have done and the reputations you have in your organizations, our budget is actually smaller in 2013 than it was in 2001,” Cone said. “You have done a great job. A lot of the things we can do to save money have already been done. You have “paid the piper” in the past, and while the projected cut is not good, it is better than what it could be.”

Within TRADOC, a large percentage of the budget is spent with contract personnel costs. Because contracting is such a significant percentage of TRADOC’s budget, the headquarters and its subordinate commands are reviewing contracts to find efficiencies or alternative ways of doing business.

Cone reiterated the need to protect what he believes is the “seed corn” for the future – the command’s nearly 19,600-strong civilian workforce – which includes temps, terms and permanent employees throughout the United States.

Cone cautioned that although current guidance is to not extend term employees past their appointments

and release temp employees by Feb. 22, “some of the most innovative work in this command is being done by temps and terms.”

To that end, a deliberate review to validate mission-essential temp and term positions is being conducted across the command.

The furloughing of permanent civilian employees will be a tool of last resort, but is being considered as a potential measure to meet the Army’s fiscal requirements.

“For the last year and a half, we have been very disciplined in our personnel decisions,” Helmerson said. “We have made some innovative changes to try and protect our permanent workforce.”

After taking questions from the audience, TRADOC leaders emphasized that every effort to protect the workforce will be made and updates will be provided in a timely manner through senior leader engagements like this town hall.

The TRADOC Public Affairs Office will also post an information page soon to the TRADOC website, www. tradoc.army.mil, to provide information about potential impacts to TRADOC’s workforce.

Fort Eustis leadership will host an interactive town hall meeting Feb. 26 to provide information and answer questions about the upcoming bridge construction project on Route 105, Fort Eustis Boulevard, and how it will impact post residents and employees.

The on post meeting will take place at the Jacobs Theater at 10 a.m. A panel consisting of 733rd Mission Support Group leadership and representatives from the City of Newport News will discuss the construction project, how it will affect traffic patterns, and ways the post and its organizations plan to mitigate negative impacts on the installation. The panel will also answer questions from audience members.

In addition to hosting a live audience, community members who are unable to attend in person can watch a live stream of the town hall via the Joint Base LangleyEustis website at www.jble.af.mil. While watching the forum, online viewers will be able to submit their questions for the event moderator to ask panel members.

The City of Newport News will begin construction in March, replacing the bridge that crosses the rail lines adjacent to Fort Eustis’ Gate 1. Post leadership will announce the exact lane closure dates at the beginning of March, but anticipate closures to begin no later than March 15.

The project is expected to take 15 to 24 months for completion from the new March start date. Construction will have an immediate impact on traffic flow to and from Fort Eustis.

Additional information regarding the project, including lane closure dates and times, will be provided as it becomes available.

The data feed from the Military Personnel Data System to the Air Force promotions data systems will not be available during the March MilPDS upgrade.

Some officers eligible for promotion consideration may be affected, including those eligible for the calendar year 2013A colonel line of the Air Force-Judge Advocate and CY13A lieutenant colonel LAF/ LAF-J boards that convene March 18. In addition, the Air Reserve Component first lieutenant and captain promotion selection process (first half) that convenes April 1 and the Air National Guard line and non-line major and lieutenant colonel boards that convene April 8 may also be affected.

“Officers need to verify their record is up-to-date and accurate.

They should review both their selection record in the Personnel Records Data Application and their officer pre-selection brief to make necessary changes prior to the MilPDS upgrade,” said Lt. Col. Shelley Strong, the AFPC operations division chief. “Updating an officer’s record prior to the MilPDS upgrade will help avoid delays.”

If officers wait to make changes during the MilPDS upgrade lasting March 4 through 27, they will need to request personnel records corrections through their local military personnel sections. After receiving the corrections, the MPS will notify the Air Force Personnel Center or the Air Reserve Personnel Center of the corrections.

MilPDS is the primary records database for personnel data and actions that occur during every to-

tal-force Airman’s career. MilPDS is also used to initiate Airmens’ pay actions, maintain Air Force accountability and strength data and support a host of interactions with other Air Force processes and systems that rely on personnel data.

Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve officers will receive further instructions from their servicing Military Personnel Section, as provided by the Air Reserve Personnel Center, concerning the MilPDS upgrade impact on applicable promotion boards. Individual Mobilization Augmentees may check with their respective program managers. Officials will continue to release information and guidance to educate total-force Airmen on how critical personnel and pay tasks will be accomplished during the MilPDS upgrade.

Heart disease claims approximately 600,000 lives each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With the disease responsible for one out of every four deaths in the United States, it is the most common killer of both men and women.

Saving lives involves fighting misconceptions. Here are some common myths about heart disease: ■ 1. All those who suffer from heart disease have obvious symptoms. By the time you experience symptoms from high cholesterol or high blood pressure, it may be difficult to reverse the damage already done to the heart.

■ 2. Younger women aren't at risk. Not all women who have heart disease are elderly. Risk factors like obesity, hypertension (high blood pressure) and Type II diabetes are showing up earlier now in women.

■ 3. Exercise is too risky for those who have heart disease. Exercise reduces the progression of heart disease and makes those who have it less likely to have a first or recurrent heart attack.

■ 4. Those who suffer from heart disease can't undo the damage. Research shows you may be able to undo the damage by including lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet and regular exercise.

■ 5. Every heart attack victim experiences chest pain.

About one out of every three people who have a heart attack doesn't feel chest pain.

■ 6. Men are the vast majority of heart attack victims.

Women are especially vulnerable. Women also experience subtle, less-traditional heart attack symptoms like fatigue and sleep disturbance more commonly than men.

■ 7. Cancer and AIDS are much deadlier diseases.

More people die of heart disease than AIDS and all cancers combined.

The U.S. Air Force Tuition Assistance program altered its guidelines Jan. 3 to emphasize the new requirement of maintaining a grade point average of at least 2.0, on a 4-point scale.

“By adopting these changes, the Air Force is falling in line with the federal government and the schools sharing GPA guidelines,” said Bertram Hardnett, the education and training services chief at Langley Air Force Base.

The changes affect policy concerning waivers, missing grades and maintaining a cumulative GPA of 2.0 for undergraduates and 3.0 for graduate-level students.

To help students with the new TA process, colleges in The Air Force the area are getting involved provides $4,500 with Air Force programs, a year in tuition making course and degree assistance to information simple to access.

“Colleges are on-board active-duty with the Air Force Academpersonnel and ic Institution Portal, which activated members is the institutional side of of the National our Air Force AutomatGuard and Reserve. ed Education Management System,” said Hardnett.

“Schools are loading college degree plans, course schedules and degree completions, as well as providing grades and invoicing in the system.”

This partnership helps to eliminate mistakes on TA applications, payments and reimbursements. The student can load a degree plan into their record without emailing or bringing one to the education office.

If students are not signed up for this, a hard-copy of grades must be taken to the education office within 60 days after the class ends to avoid paying out-of-pocket for the course.

“The new changes will be more beneficial to the Department of Defense, Department of Education and all of the higher educational institutions that are streamlining the process for students,” said Hardnett.

The Air Force provides $4,500 a year in tuition assistance to active-duty personnel and activated members of the National Guard and Reserve. Members are eligible to use TA for Community College of the Air Force courses, an associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and a onetime certification in any academic area they want to pursue.

There was a warmth in the room as she described stories and memories of her family. The twang in her voice echoed her captivating Southern charm.

Sara JaneArnett, anArmy spouse and author, smiled as she recalled when her son’s school held an event called “Donuts with Dads.”

Her son Gammon, wanted so badly for his dad to participate, but he couldn’t – he was deployed.

She wasn’t going to let the distance hinder them from enjoying a special event like this, so she resolved they would have their own “Donuts with Dads” at their home using video-chat. She even made a flyer for their special event.

That morning, she woke Gammon up early. He and his dad have a special, swirl donut they call “tractor wheels,” so she made sure she had bought some the day before.

he could make it,” said Mrs. Arnett.

She paused for a moment, looking up to the ceiling. Her eyes glimmered and began to water.

“It was precious,” she said. “He made the time for Gammon.”

For Mrs. Arnett, adapting to celebrate special moments isn’t unusual. After seven years of marriage and several deployments, her family finds ways to stay strong by communicating, supporting one another and celebrating every day as if it was an occasion.

her sons, 5-year-old Gammon, 3-year-old Harrison and 1-year-old Levi, while their father is gone.

“We do anything to try to have an adventure or occasion or event to get excited about,” she said.

“It’s important to create memories, because the memories we have will keep us strong through the time apart.”

Her husband, Army Capt. Sam Arnett, former 221st Military Police Detachment commander at Fort Eustis, Va., is currently on a year-long deployment serving with the Area Support Group-Kuwait as the provost marshal of the northern camps in Camp Buehring, Kuwait. Since their marriage, he has been deployed during Valentine’s Day twice.

When her husband is home for Valentine’s Day, the Arnetts celebrate in different ways to cover time together as a couple, and time as a family.

“We want to do something for just us too because it’s important to share time exclusively with your spouse,” she said. “We also do stuff with the kids like make Valentine’s cookies.”

This year, the family is sending Captain Arnett a themed care package, with items wrapped in red and white tissue paper.

“We put in things like homemade pictures from the boys, ‘because they love and adore you,’ and two packages of cookies ‘because the boys and I are sweet on you,’” she said. “It’s just something fun with little sayings. Last month I sent him a box with all types of nuts – peanuts, cashews, all kinds, and wrote ‘The boys and I are going nuts without you.’”

In order to make the holiday apart even more special, the Arnetts are planning a Valentine’s video-chat date.

“We’re going to dress up – that sounds silly I guess,” she said, laughing. “I got him a shirt and sent it in the care package. On the outside it says ‘Skype-date attire.’”

According to Mrs. Arnett, taking the time to send packages and communicate to her husband is essential to having a successful marriage while being apart.

“If we communicate to each other that we both feel the other is special, we give each other empowerment in our relationship, and we can focus on other things because we’re so secure in our relationship,” she said. “I want to keep him involved in our life as much as possible because that harbors trust. Any successful relationship is going to take work

and effort, but we have a commitment to each other, to the military and to our marriage, and we’re going to make it work.”

In addition to ensuring an open line of communication, Mrs. Arnett said she’s taking steps for herself during the separation to alleviate stressors in order to help support their bond.

“Every Monday I have a babysitter come – I call it ‘Mama Mondays,’” she said, smiling. “I’m working on my master’s, so I go to the library half the day or make lists of things to do. It’s a pretty huge thing for me to get out of the house and acknowledge that I need help. This is a luxury for me, like a mental breather.”

For Mrs. Arnett, the impact of “Mama Mondays” also has a positive effect on her children.

“It’s the way you approach things – your attitude,” she said.

It was a cold January evening in a little town called Muzquiz, in Coahuila, Mexico. Despite the chill in the air, she and a friend decided to go to the local dance hall.

It was the kind of close-knit town where everyone knew each other, and dancing was a way to let loose on a Friday night.

Her long, brightly-colored skirt floated around her as she danced to the syncopated rhythm of cumbia drums, the steady beating of claves filling the air. She was about to leave after several hours, until she noticed an intriguing man standing close to the dance floor. When they locked eyes, the whole world seemed to stand still.

recounting the story of how she and her husband first met that night in 1994, her Hispanic accent breathing its own rhythmic melody into the words she spoke.

“He was wearing a long cowboy coat, which was different and made him stand out,” said Mrs. Castillo, a software engineer at the Langley NASA Research Center in Hampton, Va. “He was, and is, the most handsome cowboy I’ve ever seen. It was love at first sight, no doubt about it.”

It was then that they had their first dance, marking the beginning of a whirlwind romance that continued with an engagement proposal just one week after they met.

More than 18 years and two children later, their marriage has stood the test of time, overcoming separations and missed holidays resulting from his military career.

Her husband, Chief Master Sgt. Guillermo “Willie” Castillo, Air Combat Command Inspector General superintendent of the maintenance division, is currently deployed to Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan. Mrs. Castillo said the separation is just an opportunity to celebrate the holidays differently.

“It’s not that we don’t celebrate, we just change our traditions,” said Mrs. Castillo. “This year, were going to celebrate Valentine’s with other families of deployed members at the Hearts Apart dinner. I like to socialize and interact with other grownups, and the girls can see other kids who are going through the same situation.”

The Castillos celebrated their first Valentine’s Day together by visiting his family in Texas shortly after they became engaged. In their early years of marriage, they would celebrate the holiday together as a couple with dinner and dancing. Their Valentine’s tradition evolved into a family dinner outing once they had their two daughters, Angelina (Angie), 14, and Mercedes (Sadie), 7.

“He’s a cowboy,” said Mrs. Castillo. “We love steaks, so when it’s a holiday, we go to a steakhouse and he always wears that cowboy hat – that’s how we know it’s a special night.”

overcomes the distance through e-mails, video phone-calls and social media. While the electronic communication has helped, Mrs. Castillo said there are additional personal avenues her family takes.

“E-mail, Tango or Facebook will never replace the joy of receiving a written note from a loved one,” she said. “My husband can read my e-mails over and over again, but seeing the handwriting of your loved one is a special and close moment. It’s a joy when my husband checks his mail and he gets letters from home and items in a care package – it’s a way to show our love for him.”

This Valentine’s Day, the family has put together a care package for him, ranging from basic items like deodorant and hand sanitizer to some of his favorite things like beef jerky and homemade pecan pies.

“I like to send him care packages with something he needs, but he always says he doesn’t need anything and says ‘Surprise me,’” said Mrs. Castillo. “The girls are learning a new song with piano lessons, so for Valentine’s Day I’m going to videotape it and send it to him, that way

if he’s busy he’ll know something’s there waiting for him.”

For other people with deployed family members, Mrs. Castillo said sending packages and letters is paramount, regardless if it’s a holiday or not.

“They need to know that we are here thinking about them, waiting for them, praying for them and talking about them so they know we await their safe return,” she said. “It is a way to nurture the relationship across the miles and make them feel that they are still part of our daily lives and routines, even if they are far away.”

Even though she makes every effort to include her husband in her day-to-day routine through e-mails and letters, Mrs. Castillo said it still doesn’t replace the inperson companionship.

“Sometimes work days can be long and then I get home and I tell him what happened today, and he just listens,” said Mrs. Castillo.

“At the end of the day I’m alright, but it’s because there’s someone there to listen.”

Mrs. Castillo isn’t the only member of the family who has trouble adapting at times. While she is able to still talk to her father while he is away, for Angie, sharing certain aspects of her life is more difficult during his deployment.

The U.S. Army realized in the early years of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that in addition to conventional warfare, Soldiers were being asked to perform a lot of nontraditional functions, some of which they were often ill-equipped to do.

These included negotiating with tribal leaders and helping develop infrastructure and services for local populations, tasks they were never trained to perform, said Col. Thomas Meyer, chief of the Human Dimension Task Force at U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, or TRADOC. In 2006, Gen. William S. Wallace, who was the commander of TRADOC, realized that since more was being asked of Soldiers, they would need to improve their performance, Meyer said.

Wallace concluded that “tanks, trucks and guns were not the primary reason for battlefield success. Rather, it was the Soldiers on the ground,” Meyer added.

TRADOC responded by adding the “Human Dimension” to its six other dimensions of study, Mission Command, Movement and Maneuver, Protection, Fires, Intelligence, and Sustainment.

Since then, human performance has moved toward the forefront of Army research .

The goals of Human Dimension research are to create a more resilient, knowledgeable and adaptive force through improved selection, talent management and training, Meyer said.

Because those goals are so broad, TRADOC enlisted the assistance of business and industry, academia and science, since each of these sectors had already been doing a lot of human performance studies. Army research labs, G-1 personnel and Army medicine were also consulted and information was shared across the services.

Placement is critically important, Meyer said, not just to make a happier and more productive Soldier, but from a cost perspective as well. A Soldier who doesn’t have the aptitude for a particular specialty, for example, might not make it through training, he said. And training can be very expensive, especially in these times of fiscal austerity.

Also, that Soldier might not be as successful later on the battlefield.

Meyer provided an example of a 68W, or combat medic, whose training is extensive, 13 months. To succeed, that person should have the right mix of knowledge and skills.

Also, the chemistry of the brain and personality factors could determine who succeeds and who doesn’t.

The ultimate test, Meyer said, might be when they experience their first casualty on the battlefield. There are some individuals who can’t function or cope in that traumatic environment, he said.

“Through research into how the mind

In addition to better placement, Human Dimension is looking at ways to deliver improved training methods that are also more cost effective.

Some individuals respond better to different learning methods and the pace of learning is not the same for all Soldiers, he said. So the Army is adding virtual training, online courses and simulations, where Soldiers can learn at their own pace and get immediate feedback.

A traditional method of training involves creating a mockup of a village in a particular country, hiring actors to play the parts of locals, and then sending Soldiers on orders to remote training centers.

All of this costs time and money, he said.

Now, a lot of this type of training can be run through simulations, he said, adding that a visit to a training center might still take place but by the time the Soldier arrives, he or she would have already become familiar with the training through virtual means and would likely be better prepared.

Human Dimension also is working with researchers on ways to optimize Soldiers’ physical and cognitive abilities, as well as to increase their resilience to hardships.

TRADOC is including Soldiers’ families and Army civilians in its scope of study.

TRADOC’s studies, while important and relevant for the Army today, are focused on looking ahead to 2020 and even 2030 and beyond.

People are an important investment for the Army, said Meyer, noting that more than 40 percent of the Army’s budget is dedicated to manpower. And, he added, that manpower pool is dwindling, making that investment all the more critical.

That makes selection, training and adaptive strategies all the more important, Meyer said.

As America and its Army face an uncertain fiscal future, the nation continues to expect to have the same level of security in the future that it has currently, he concluded.

To succeed in the Army’s mission, therefore, investing in the Soldier is paramount.

The LOMAH system is a computercontrolled projectile detection target system that automatically triangulates shot groups to provide the shooter with corrective data through a wireless local area network, replacing the human method of marking and scoring of Known Distance Live-Fire Exercises.

The system uses acoustic sensors to detect supersonic projectiles within a twometer radius of a target. The sensors at the target emplacement then relay the results to an Android-based tablet at the ďŹ ring point, enabling individuals, trainers and coaches to recognize and identify errors and correct them in a more deďŹ ned and accurate manner. “Technology is always changing, so we have to continue to be innovative,â€? said Dennis Terry, TCM-Live Sustainable Range Program manager. “If we’re not moving forward with technology, we’re not doing our Soldiers justice.â€?

The system is designed for the M16 and M4 series weapons, and offers precise adjustments for iron sights, close combat optics or advanced combat optical gun sights. The system even numbers shots based on order, giving shooters the ability to completely track the grouping from the ďŹ rst shot to the last.

By offering immediate results, the new system improves rie range efďŹ ciency and increases training effectiveness, ultimately saving time and ammunition.

Soldiers can move more quickly through qualiďŹ cation because each lane is run independently and allows shooters to progress to the next task at their own pace. The LOMAH range has no need for a detail to raise and lower targets to show shooters their performance as currently required on known distance ranges.

An evaluation, set to take place later this year, will determine if the LOMAH system is suitable for use in home station training. “There are a great deal of possibilities with this system,â€? said Terry. “LOMAH is a system that can beneďŹ t Soldiers greatly in small arms training.â€?

Bridge Replacement Project Preconstruction activities have begun to prepare the Fort Eustis Boulevard NSX Railway overpass for construction. The exact lane closure dates will be determined on or around March 1, but expect closures to begin no later than March 15.

This construction will have an immediate

impact on traffic flow to and from Fort Eustis.

Organizations are encouraged to implement preplanned mitigation strategies to alleviate traffic congestion. Anticipate 15-24 months for completion of repairs to the bridge.

Turkey hunting season lottery The 733d Civil Engineer Division will conduct a lottery-based spring turkey hunting season from April 13 through May 18. Lottery tickets will be sold in the Environmental Element office at 1407 Washington Boulevard March 4-29, Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Tickets are $5 each, and interested persons may purchase as many tickets as desired, but may be drawn only once. Payment methods include check or money order payable to “U.S. Treasury” but no cash will be accepted.

Each drawn hunter will have two half-days to harvest a turkey, and will be contacted by 733rd CED staff if drawn to determine availability of hunt days. Hunters may use archery tackle or shotguns in accordance with state laws. Hunters will meet with the installation wildlife biologist prior to hunts and must remain within designated hunting areas at all times. No scouting is permitted.

The drawing will be conducted April 1. All drawn hunters will be notified by close of business on April 2. A minimum of three bearded turkeys will be available for harvest, but a maximum will not be determined until after population surveys are completed in March.

The Air Force Personnel Operations Agency is upgrading the Military Personnel Data System.The upgrade is scheduled to take 23 days starting March 4, during which time no personnel transactions can be updated through the system. Resolute warrior earns star note

U.S. Army Sgt. Jesus Rivera, assigned to the 382nd Transportation Theater Opening Element, Special Troops Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade, was recognized Feb. 11 for his outstanding effort supporting the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-2 section, in November 2012. He was presented with a star note written by Defense Intelligence Senior Executive Officer Thomas F. Greco and presented by Col. Jennifer Reinkober, commander, 7th Sus. Bde. A star note is a congratulatory letter written by a general officer or civilian equivalent to a Service member for going above and beyond the call of duty.

“Separations are inevitable in this line of work,” she said. “If your spouse, partner or other half is away right now leaving you to maintain the home front, remember to rely on the support of your friends and family. It makes you realize you can do this another day, and find your inner strength to weather the separation – then everything else will fall into place.”

Although the time apart is challenging, Mrs. Arnett said there is also a silver lining to deployments and separations.

“In the military, those times when you’re able to spend holidays together are fleeting, so when you do have that opportunity, you make the most of it and you appreciate it,” she said. “It’s not nec-

essarily what we do or what we get for each other, it’s that time that we have with each other that is the biggest gift of all.

“With Valentine’s Day and the message of love, for our family it’s significant across the entire year because we love each other every day, regardless of any occasion,” she continued. “My commitment to the strength of my family is that of my Soldier’s commitment to our country.”

It is evident that the heartbeat of the Arnett family is the strength they foster through continued commitment and support. By considering every day as something special to celebrate, the family is able to endure the remaining months of the separation until they can again enjoy adventures together, even if it’s the simple joy of memories made over a “tractor wheel” donut.

MI REY FROM PAGE 13 “If I get good grades on my test, I come home and show him because I like to make him proud,” said Angie. “My number one goal in life is to make my parents proud, but especially my dad, because he’s done so much for me. When I have soccer or basketball games, at halftime I always go to him for advice. I miss him watching me play so he can improve my skills and give me feedback.”

Angie also said participating in extra-curricular activities is one way children her age can cope with having a deployed parent.

“Keep busy in sports and volunteering in schools and libraries,” said Angie. “Write to your parent who is deployed and keep in touch.

Your mom or dad being deployed shouldn’t bring you down – it should make you better because you can make goals and strive to do better so they can be proud of you.”

Although the family stays involved and busy, Mrs. Castillo admits there are still times when the time apart is challenge, but she is able to overcome those moments.

“We’re a Catholic family and we believe in the power of prayer,” she said. “I tell him I’m not alone - I get my strength from up above.”

For Mrs. Castillo, the overall scope of her husband’s deployment is what keeps her family

strong. Having moved to America after they were married and initially unable to speak English, her husband’s career holds a special place in her heart.

“Everything they do over there is worth it to live the life we have here,” she said. “It’s what I tell my husband – this country is a great country, let’s make it even better. Appreciate what you have, and take each opportunity that comes along.”

Although the family has adapted to a lifestyle of being apart, it is evident they have a developed a support system to ensure their bond stays strong.

“I call him ‘Mi Rey’ which is ‘My King’ in English,” she said. “He is ‘My King,’ the love of my life – my everything. I tell him even though you’re there and I’m here, we are not separated.

There are some couples who are together every day, but they are far away from each other – that’s the difference.”

From that chilly Friday night in a dance hall in Mexico to a world apart today, the story of the Castillo family seems something out of a fairytale. Although the physical distance between them may be far, it is clear by the love the family has for another other that in their hearts, they are always together.
