President Donald J. Trump greeted a crowd of service members, their families and friends as he made his first official visit to Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, and the Tidewater military community, March 2, 2017.

Trump was welcomed by Maj. Gen. John K. McMullen, Air Combat Command vice commander, Col. Caroline M. Miller, 633rd Air Base Wing commander and Col. Pete M. Fesler, 1st Fighter Wing commander.

“As America’s vanguard air dominance provider, the 1st Fighter Wing delivers F-22 Raptor airpower worldwide. As the oldest wing in the Air Force, the 1st Fighter Wing continues its tradition of air superiority which began in WWI and continues with current fifth-generation operations across the global spectrum of conflict. Anytime we can showcase our first-class raptor fleet to the president and his staff, we’re proud to do so,” said Fesler.

Trump was accompanied by the Secretary of Defense James Mattis. Shortly after their arrival at the Langley Air Force Base flight line, both Trump and Mattis boarded Marine One for a short helicopter ride to the Newport News Shipyard for a tour of the USS Gerald R. Ford, the newest class of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers.

Trump’s visit comes following the release of the administration’s 2018 budget proposal, which included a $54 billion increase to the Department of Defense budget.

The men and women of the Air Combat Command will welcome a new commander during a Change of Command ceremony, March 10, 2017. General Hawk Carlisle will relinquish command to General Mike Holmes. The ceremony is open to Department of Defense ID card holders and their family members.

The event will be held in the 94th Fighter Squadron Hangar, building 791,

and will start promptly at 1030 a.m. Shuttles will begin on 10 March at 9:15 a.m. and run until 10:15 a.m. from the parking lot across from the Shoppette as specified in the above map.

Shuttles will resume after the ceremony, making stops at specified parking areas.

They will also go to the Post Change of Command Reception at the Bayview Commonwealth Center and continue to run until all attendees are returned to the specified parking area.

AFAF CAMPAIGN TO KICK-OFF

The 44th annual Air Force Assistance Fund campaign, for Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia kicks-off March 6, 2017 and runs through May 19, 2017.

The campaign is a fundraising appeal, conducted

by U.S. Air Force personnel to help provide fellow Air Force personnel with financial support through four different charities.

According to a memorandum by U.S. Air Force Gen. Dave Goldfein, Chief of Staff, he said the ongoing theme for the AFAF is ‘Commitment to Caring,’ which mirrors the Airmen helping Airmen pur-

pose of the campaign. “The funds that are donated can be allocated to one or all four charities who assist Airmen and their families in possible time of need,� said U.S. Air Force Maj. Rosnetta Hutchinson, JBLE AFAF representative. “Each unit will designate AFAF representatives, who will make 100 percent contact with Air Force personnel. The goal for the 2017 campaign is $136,075.�

The charities available for donations are: The Air Force Aid Society — provides emergency financial assistance, educational loans and scholarships, spouse tuition assistance and an array of other base community enhancement programs.

The Air Force Village Charitable Foundation – provides retiree’s widows and widowers with a home, whether they are able to afford it on their own or not.

The Air Force Enlisted Village — provides retiree’s widows and widowers with a home, whether they are able to afford it on their own or not.

The LeMay Foundation – seeks out and provides assistance to widows and widowers of Air Force retirees through grants of financial assistance, ensuring they are able to continue living in their homes.

Third Port: pivotal point for Army transportation

Crisp air whips around at the mouth of Skiffes Creek on the James River, as a small tug boat glides along the black water, easing to a halt alongside a pier. U.S. Army Soldiers jump out of the watercraft and begin throwing ropes to each other, securing the boat to the pier at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, Feb. 22, 2017.

This 40-acre pier complex, known as Third Port, houses U.S. Army vessels in a deep-water port, providing safe harbor for the watercraft fleet. Although mostly used for training personnel in vessel operations and cargo loading, Third Port is an operational pier for the U.S. Army to train in deployment readiness and recovery.

“Boats go from here to world-wide locations in support of contingency operations and humanitarian aid relief,” said Jay Dehart, 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron harbormaster. “We are 48 nautical miles from the sea buoy. It’s like building a business or a home close to the freeway; the port provides easy access to deep water.”

The isolated area around the port offers a unique training environment for conducting tactical training.

Also, with limited harbors in the surrounding area, civilian vessels are rarely seen near the training zone, lessening the impact on the daily exercises conducted off-shore.

Third Port is regularly used for training exercises during joint service training and is open to all branches of the U.S. military.

“When we go into a deployed environment there are typically other service members,” said U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Susan Heyse, 73rd Transportation Company, 10th Battalion, 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) marine maintenance NCO. “I think it’s important that we have a level of familiarity with other services through joint training.”

Although, heavily used for training personnel, the pier also allows boats to be docked in order to make repairs and to perform routine maintenance. For example, the 633rd Security Forces Squadron, stationed at JBLE, are able to be maintained their patrol boats at Third Port, saving time and money for both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force.

vices, global mission success capabilities through training opportunities and operational readiness.

Among the functioning watercraft sits an operational landship, equipped with a large crane and hoist frame used for training on how to handle and load cargo. The equipment and vessels provide realistic training opportunities, helping prepare service members for realworld scenarios and deployments.

“All the boat operators, maintainers and cargo operation specialist are trained here at Fort Eustis,” said

Dehart. “So you have to have boats here to support this watercraft school and it just makes sense to have a port here.”

According to Dehart, the Army has plans to modernize and expand the fleet at JBLE to support the training mission, helping prepare service members for realworld operations. As the Armed Force’s technology and capabilities advance, Third Port will continue to grow to meet the ever-changing needs for mission success.

NEW ACADEMY WILL TRAIN SECURITY FORCE ASSISTANCE BRIGADES

A new Military Advisor Training Academy at Fort Benning, Georgia, will train both noncommissioned and commissioned officers assigned to a new type of unit: the Security Force Assistance Brigade, or SFAB. The first six-week course at the academy is scheduled to begin in October as the first Soldiers for the new unit report to Benning. Eventually, six of these new SFABs will stand up.

These new brigades will have no junior enlisted Soldiers. They will instead be staffed with 500 senior NCOs and officers who will have the expertise to help train foreign militaries.

The effects that the SFABs will bring to the Army will actually be three-fold, according to Col. Brian Ellis, maneuver division chief in the directorate of force management, G-3/5/7 at the Pentagon, who led planning for the new brigades.

“First, the Army will more effectively advise and assist foreign security forces,” he said.

“The second is to preserve the readiness of our brigade combat teams by reducing the need to break apart those formations to conduct security assistance missions.” This will preserve BCT readiness for full-spectrum operations.

The third role of the SFAB is to help the Army more quickly regenerate brigade combat teams when needed. If the Army needs another BCT, for example, junior Soldiers would fall in on an existing SFAB, which is already full of senior NCOs and officers. Having a pre-built command structure in place would significantly speed up the process of generating new brigades, Ellis said.

An SFAB serves as a “standing chain of command for rapidly expanding the Army,” said Lt. Gen. Joseph Anderson, the Army’s deputy chief of staff for operations and training, G-3/5/7.

In the meantime, the SFABs will be the Army’s first permanent units whose core mission is to conduct security cooperation activities, he said, allowing quick response to combatant com-

mander requirements.

SFABs will be designed on the model of infantry and armored brigade combat teams, Ellis said, with a framework staff of NCOs in the grade of staff sergeant and above, and officers who are captains and above. Each brigade will have a cavalry squadron and two maneuver battalions, either infantry or armor.

Each company will have three teams of four trainers and a company headquarters. And even the headquarters will serve as a training team, Ellis said.

Soldiers will report by battalions to the Military Advisor Training Academy. The first battalion will begin training at the academy in October.

The academy itself will have a cadre of approximately 70 instructors, including some special forces soldiers, Ellis said.

After the initial six-week course, SFAB officers and NCOs will receive follow-up training in foreign languages, cultural studies and foreign weapons, Ellis said. He explained that it will take about a year to train a unit up to full operating capability so that it can deploy to assist a combatant commander.

The first SFAB unit will be permanently stationed at Fort Benning. The second one, which is planned to stand up in the fall of 2018, will be a National Guard brigade, Ellis said. The third SFAB will be in the regular Army, and it is planned to begin training in the fall of 2018, though permanent stationing and resourcing decisions haven’t been made yet past the first brigade.

Currently, the Army has three BCTs deployed for advise and assist missions, Ellis said. It may be a few years before the new SFABs will be able to handle all of that demand.

In the meantime, the 3-353rd Armor Battalion at Fort Polk, Louisiana, will continue training BCTs to handle security force assistance missions.

Ellis said the Army’s six SFABs should eventually be able to handle the bulk of SFA missions, in support of security cooperation, stability operations, and counterinsurgency operations.

“When someone’s life is in your hands, you have to be cognizant that their life depends on you...You only get one chance.” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Tyler Wineman, 1st Operation Support Squadron aircrew flight equipment technician, eluding to what could happen to a pilot if technicians, like him, did not do their job correctly.

Other 1st Operation Support Squadron Aircrew flight equipment technicians at Joint Base LangleyEustis, Virginia, like Wineman, are in charge of maintaining and repairing the equipment needed to increase the survivability of pilots flying a fifth-generation stealth combat fighter aircraft.

For Wineman, who primarily maintains and inspects parachutes, having someone else’s life in his hands is something that resonates with each stitch, stow and fold involved with packing a parachute.

“You have to have a mindset of ‘I feel confident enough to jump with these. I can give it to another person,’” said Wineman. “I’m going to take my time, I’m going to do this right and if something looks

wrong, I may have to condemn a chute.”

According to Wineman, who was previously stationed at a base where a parachute was successfully ejected and saved a pilot’s life, faulty chutes have been turned over to be condemned after up to four or more hours of packing.

“He punched out of a jet and my buddy’s name was on the repack, he was an Airman just like me,” said Wineman. “What we do is an important factor – our guys were [also] involved in rescuing him when he came down.”

Along with saving lives during ejection scenarios, AFE technicians also maintain routine flight equipment that enables pilots to fly up to altitudes reaching 60,000 feet and at speeds of Mach 2.

“If the helmet goes wrong, if the communication goes wrong, we can fix that by running out to the jet to switch the components and get them back on their flight,” said Senior Airman Patrick Long, 1st Operation Support Squadron AFE technician. “But if the Ggear fails we have to fit them to an entire new suit.”

The G-suit is an antigravity suit that inflates to keep blood flowing regularly when pilots pull positives G’s. In order for it to work properly, AFE tech-

nicians must guarantee that the suits inflate to the proper pressures, and that they are not contaminated, ripped, cut or torn, preventing them from failing in flight.

According to Long, if any of those issues caused it to fail, the pilot could pass out, which could lead to ejecting or crashing the jet.

While the G-suits and parachutes are time staking and immediately life-saving, every piece of equipment the technicians maintain, from helmets to harnesses, ensures a successful and safe flight.

“It’s very important for us to have acute attention to detail with everything that we do. The slightest error could cause a death or a crash,” said Long. “For instance, the harness holds you to the parachute when you eject. If you miss one little fray in the webbing, the whole thing could unravel and the pilot could unfortunately lose his life.”

“When someone’s life is in your hands, you have to be cognizant that their life depends on you...You only get one chance.” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Tyler Wineman, 1st Operation Support Squadron aircrew flight equipment technician, eluding to what could happen to a pilot if technicians, like him, did not do their job correctly.

Other 1st Operation Support Squadron Aircrew flight equipment technicians at Joint Base LangleyEustis, Virginia, like Wineman, are in charge of maintaining and repairing the equipment needed to increase the survivability of pilots flying a fifth-generation stealth combat fighter aircraft.

For Wineman, who primarily maintains and inspects parachutes, having someone else’s life in his hands is something that resonates with each stitch, stow and fold involved with packing a parachute.

“You have to have a mindset of ‘I feel confident enough to jump with these. I can give it to another person,’” said Wineman. “I’m going to take my time, I’m going to do this right and if something looks

wrong, I may have to condemn a chute.”

According to Wineman, who was previously stationed at a base where a parachute was successfully ejected and saved a pilot’s life, faulty chutes have been turned over to be condemned after up to four or more hours of packing.

“He punched out of a jet and my buddy’s name was on the repack, he was an Airman just like me,” said Wineman. “What we do is an important factor – our guys were [also] involved in rescuing him when he came down.”

Along with saving lives during ejection scenarios, AFE technicians also maintain routine flight equipment that enables pilots to fly up to altitudes reaching 60,000 feet and at speeds of Mach 2.

“If the helmet goes wrong, if the communication goes wrong, we can fix that by running out to the jet to switch the components and get them back on their flight,” said Senior Airman Patrick Long, 1st Operation Support Squadron AFE technician. “But if the Ggear fails we have to fit them to an entire new suit.”

The G-suit is an antigravity suit that inflates to keep blood flowing regularly when pilots pull positives G’s. In order for it to work properly, AFE tech-

nicians must guarantee that the suits inflate to the proper pressures, and that they are not contaminated, ripped, cut or torn, preventing them from failing in flight.

According to Long, if any of those issues caused it to fail, the pilot could pass out, which could lead to ejecting or crashing the jet.

While the G-suits and parachutes are time staking and immediately life-saving, every piece of equipment the technicians maintain, from helmets to harnesses, ensures a successful and safe flight.

“It’s very important for us to have acute attention to detail with everything that we do. The slightest error could cause a death or a crash,” said Long. “For instance, the harness holds you to the parachute when you eject. If you miss one little fray in the webbing, the whole thing could unravel and the pilot could unfortunately lose his life.”

BORN UNDER FIRE: SOLDIERS, AIRMEN LEARN TO MAINTAIN AIR ASSAULT WEAPONS

Along a half-mile radius at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, large warehouses filled with 300 different training simulators and approximately 3,000 computer stations provide a real-life training experience for U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force helicopter maintenance students.

In those warehouses, instructors and course developers assigned to the 128th Aviation Brigade transform approximately 6,000 aviation maintenance, logistics and leadership students into technically qualified aviation maintainers and logisticians as tactically proficient aviation maintenance leaders every year.

The 128th Avn. Bde. earned its name, ‘Born Under Fire,’ when it was temporarily formed during Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989. The brigade served there until its deactivation in 1995, and was then reactivated in 2012.

Today, the 128th Avn. Bde. is made up of three battalions that trains roughly 1,750 students a day, where initial entry Soldiers learn how to repair and maintain avionics, electrical systems and armaments for the AH64 Apache, CH-47 Chinook and UH-60 Black Hawk.

According to Mark Jones, 128th Avn. Bde. deputy to the commander, each battalion ensures training is realistic, relevant and rigorous to establish a well-rounded aviation specialist for each battalion’s aerial platforms.

“We try to make the atmosphere here as professional and realistic as possible for the students,” said Jones.

“We teach our students with tangible equipment and

full-scale helicopters to provide realistic training opportunities and prepare them for real-world scenarios in aviation repairs.”

As technology continues to advance, the training equipment throughout the program is upgraded to reach the demands of the aircraft and students.

“Our Logistics Training Department is constantly looking at better ways to train our Soldiers and Airmen,” said Jones. “We have to be cognizant of how each generation learns, and with this generation we can cut down the amount of time it takes to train through technology and web-based models.”

According to Jones, the U.S. Air Force has plans to build new UH-60 Pave Hawk virtual trainers, which will help prepare Airmen in the Brigade’s courses on how to repair the advanced aircraft.

The technology upgrades benefit more than initial entry Soldiers. The 128th Avn. Bde. offers advanced NCO technical-level classes, warrant and armament officer technician courses and international student studies, shaping Soldiers of all ranks and backgrounds into proficient aviation mechanics and leaders.

“There’s a lot of support from our instructors here to completely understand what we are doing,” said U.S. Army Spc. Benjamin Conover, 128th Avn. Bde., 1st Battalion, 222nd Avn. Regiment student. “They are constantly pushing students to ask questions, so we have everything we need when we go out into the realworld.”

12 to 24-week courses. Instructors teach maintenance procedures ‘by the book’ and stress repetition as the key to safety in the workplace.

“It never ceases to amaze me as the different generations flow through here, they are as motivated and as patriotic as the previous generation,” said Jones. “They may do things a little differently but their motivation is just the same. The pride that the folks who work here have in seeing these young Soldiers graduate and move on to do great things is what makes working here really neat.”

Through demanding courses and realistic training opportunities, the 128th Avn. Bde. Trains the new generations of Soldiers and Airmen with advanced technology to repair and maintain the military’s air assault weapons.

Suicide is the most preventable form of death. Prevention and intervention of this final act are everyone’s responsibility.

It only takes one person to make a difference

Suicide is not a topic that is easily discussed in everyday conversation. Meaning, loved ones often have no clue that their family member or friend is contemplating or struggling with the idea of suicide. However there are signs and risk factors, early on, which can be recognized to better help an individual who may be having suicidal thoughts.

According to U.S. Air Force Maj. Kieran Dhillon, 633rd Medical Operation Squadron director of psychological health, a large part of suicide prevention in the military is ensuring those at risk feel as though they belong and are valued in the different roles in their life.

That means talking with and making sure an at-risk individual knows his or her peers care and are willing to help.

“In the military we can have that conversation and talk about how we can all work together to provide a very supportive network for military members,” said Dhillon According to Dhillon, the three most common causes of suicidal tendencies in the military are, relationships, work and financial issues.

To be better aware here are some signs to look for: • Often expressing sadness • Sleeping all the time, or having trouble sleeping • Withdrawing from friends and family • Expressing feelings of guilt, shame or failure • Dramatic and frequent mood changes • Anxiety and agitation

• Deteriorating physical appearances and neglect of personal welfare • Acting recklessly • Losing interest in hobbies; loss of appetite • Performing poorly at work or school • Giving away prized possessions • Desperation, feeling like there’s no way out or no solution to the problem • Trying to secure weapons, pills or other things that can be used for harm While suicide is an uncomfortable topic for some, if the signs are there do not be discouraged to find someone to talk to, or point someone in the right direction to get the help they need.

“Never worry alone, whether it’s professional or something personal going on in your life, always reach out to somebody,” said Dhillon. “Somebody is always available to talk and provide support.”

According to U.S Air Force Chaplin (Col.) David Terrinoni, 633rd Air Base Wing joint base senior chaplain, the chaplain’s office is there for anyone who needs support or wishes to talk to someone.

“The biggest thing we have to offer people is safety and security,” said Terrinoni. “We’re not judging and we’re not looking to hurt anybody. We’re the only organization on this installation that has total complete confidentiality.”

Career fair unites JBLE, local community

As a way to strengthen the tie between the military and the local Hampton Roads community, U.S. Army Soldiers and U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 733rd and 633rd Security Forces Squadrons and the 221st and 3rd Military Police Detachments at Joint Base LangleyEustis, Virginia, visited with students during a career fair at Crittenden Middle School in Newport News, Virginia., Feb. 22, 2017.

The service members from JBLE, along with other professionals in the local community, spoke with seventh-grade students regarding science, technology, engineering and mathematics principles and how they tie into their careers and education goals.

“What we like to show the students is that there are lots of similar career opportunities in the community and within the Armed Forces that revolve around STEM education,” said Felicia Barnett, Crittenden Middle School principle.

“We want to be able to expose our students to those various careers and educational benefits.”

For the members of the Armed Forces who participated in the career fair, the objective was to strengthen the relationships between the installation and the local community. The service members also wanted to educate the students on the jobs they perform every day within their specific career fields and what educational opportunities are available to military members.

“As a good steward of the profession of arms, we get to go out into the community and strengthen those relationships and also teach, train and educate at our local schools so they know what the military is all about,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Maj. Joel Zecca, 733rd SFS sergeant major and installation provost sergeant major. “We talked to the students about the significance and the importance of the military and let them know why we’re here and why we do what we do.”

633rd FSS Fitness team transition to new PT test site The 633rd Force Support Squadron fitness section has transitioned to a new physical training test registration site as of Feb. 1, 2017. For those who registered prior to Feb. 1, 2017 using the previous sharepoint site, the Fitness Assessment Cell has your test dates and times. Tax center now open The Langley Tax Center is now open! Assistance is available at the walk-in kiosks for self-file or call for an appointment at 225-5777 for additional income tax assistance during the hours of 8 a.m.-12 p.m., MondayFriday.

The tax center is located at 402 Helms Ave., Langley Air Force Base, Va., Bldg. 801 on the basement level.

Parking is located in the back of the building. If entering the building from the front or back entrance, use the stairwell in the lobby to access the tax center on the basement level. The elevator does not work, so call in advance for assistance down the stairs.

Again, an appointment is not required to use the kiosks—the kiosks are available between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. during the duty day. When using the kiosk, access Military OneSource, an online resource that offers free software to help prepare and file taxes online.

A consultant is available to answer any question regarding Military OneSource for free during the tax season, Jan. through April 18, 2017, at 800-342-9647 while at the tax center or home. When using the kiosks, access to other free tax preparation sites will be available to help individuals prepare their taxes on their own. Military OneSource suggests that before starting on your tax return, gather all necessary tax documents and additional information such as the following:

JBLE Family Child Care Program The Joint Base Langley-Eustis Family Child Care Program is looking for child care providers. They are searching for those interested in a professional, portable career that will allow those to stay at home and run a homebased business.
