The 7th Sustainment Brigade ceremonially uncased it colors on Fort Eustis’ Murphy Field April 13, marking the end of its 12-month deployment to Afghanistan.

In ceremonial tradition, uncasing of a unit’s colors symbolizes a return from deployment. The 7th Sus. Bde., commanded under the name Task Force Resolute, took command and control sustainment and support operations for Regional Command’s West, Southwest and South.

Col. Lawrence Kominiak, 7th Sus. Bde. commander, explains some details of the mission. “We had a highly successful mission in Afghanistan supporting the warďŹ ghter with exceptional supply, maintenance, transportation, ammunition, postal, ďŹ nance, and human resource support.â€? said Kominiak. “We provided worldclass service but now we look forward to getting back to our garrison mission of training soldiers in logistical support.â€?

Cherry was very thankful to the staff for their accomplishments over the year as he handed over command back to Kominiak. “The 7th Sustainment Brigade is one of the most unique and diverse units in the Army. Cherry will next assume new roles and responsibilities at the Combined Arms Sustainment Center of Excellence at Fort Lee, Va. Spring is here, and with the warmer weather comes permanent change of station season for Airmen across the Air Force. While moving is one of the most stressful experiences a person will encounter in their lifetime, the Air Force’s new Housing website can make the process much easier.

The website features links to housing pages for each Air Force installation, a map of bases, links to other important websites and a list of frequently asked questions.

The goal of the site is to provide information on housing options and support services available at Air Force installations, as well as details about local communities, school district information, local weather and other useful resources that will help Airmen and their families

become familiar with their new homes.

Additionally, the site provides dorm information for unaccompanied Airmen.

“Our housing professionals are among the first people Airmen and their families meet at their new duty stations, and it is always with a smile.

I lived in nine different homes in the span of nine years – what am I? I am a military brat. My scrapbook is colored with snowy white North Dakota landscapes, the Golden Gate Bridge (which as a child, I was devastated to find decidedly not golden), and sticky Alabama summers.

Pudgy, miniature versions of me smile back from photos on Delaware beaches, visiting Canadian zoos and running through the maze of halls in the Pentagon.

Then there are the moments captured exploring the crowded streets of London, taking hour-long bike rides through deep German forests, and absorbing the sight of the Eiffel Tower at night. I have seen parts of the world many of my peers may never see and have learned from experiences my peers may never get the opportunity to have.

We do this without losing ourselves, who we are as people.

This is a feat not easily achieved. Naturally, when we are unsure where “home” will be next year, or even next month, we turn every experience into a memorable one, so no “home” will ever be forgotten.

The five years I lived overseas in Europe influenced me the most. I experienced a culture so different from the fastpaced, ever-churning whirlwind that characterizes life in the United States.

Going out to dinner was a four-hour long culinary sojourn and daily, work-free “quiet hours” afforded much needed reflection. My German neighbors were simply never in a hurry (with the exception of whizzing past my family’s ‘99 Chevy Suburban on the Autobahn at roughly 100 miles per hour).

Returning to the U.S., I was launched

back into the chaos of a competitive lifestyle and experienced metaphorical oxygen deprivation. The experience was one of severe discomfort that undeniably taught me the meaning of “sink or swim.”

I spent a frustratingly long time desperately treading water but I now know that I am capable of working hard enough to swim.

I am capable of working hard enough to achieve just about anything.

I am who I am because of the many places I have lived and what I have experienced. I am different because of my opportunities and challenges. My military upbringing has taught me how to work harder, get further, and always be me.

Slithering and sliding, creeping and crawling, flying, jumping or stalking; it doesn't matter, the folks at the Langley Air Force Base entomology shop have it covered.

Posters of the anatomy of strange bugs and other crawling creatures cover the walls of the small office tucked away behind Eaglewood Golf Course. An indoor beehive and living snakes and other critters inhabit the workplace.

This isn't an average Air Force office.

James Will, the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron Entomology Foreman has shown the innovative beehive to the local community so beekeepers can protect their swarms from the Dibrom pesticide sprayed around Langley AFB. Want to see it? No problem, said Will.

The team keeps a host of animals in the shop as shop pets, including Sammy the bearded dragon, a species of lizard, as the shop's unofficial mascot.

However, a trip may not be for the faint of heart. A Ball Python, Rosey Tarantula, California king snake, broad-headed skink and five Madagascar Hissing Roaches are all contained in the shop.

Senior Airman Steven Peterson, a 633rd CES pest control specialist, said that along with biannual visits to the youth center, the shop's critters are available for viewing and even handling in some cases.

Pest control and any related public health concerns also fall under their area of responsibility. From outbreaks of bed bugs to pesky ants, a call to CES can get the base's pest problems solved.

Not surprisingly, the shop has received some strange calls.

“We catch some pretty crazy stuff,” said Peterson. He said the team has responded to calls about snakes in Airman dormitories to raccoons in the rafters of buildings.

The biggest mission for the pest pros is preventing disease vectors from populating on Langley.

“Disease vectors are essentially creatures that have the possibility to carry dis-

eases on to humans,” said Mitchell Burchan, a 633rd CES pest control technician.

Common vectors are mosquitoes and ticks, said Will. To monitor these animals, especially mosquitoes, the shop uses a large array of equipment, from microscopes and test tubes to insect traps.

Will and Burchan offered the following fun facts about the area's wildlife: ■ There are no poisonous snakes native to this region of Virginia; however, three types of venomous snakes live in the local area, including Northern Copperhead, Eastern Cottonmouth and Timber Rattlesnakes. Also, corn snakes, northern water snakes and black rat snakes are common and getting bitten hurts regardless of their non-poisonous anatomy ■ There are more than 50 species of mosquitoes native to Langley AFB. All are checked for diseases such as West Nile ■ Mosquitoes lay their eggs the water ■ No deadly viruses have been found in any of the vectors to date on Langley AFB ■ Mosquitoes are attracted to light, carbon dioxide and human sweat. One of the traps releases a synthetic smell of sweat to catch the tiger mosquito ■ One light/CO2 trap catches approximately 500 to 1,500 mosquitoes nightly during the height of the season, which runs from April to October So in the future, if that pet snake gets loose or critters invade your workplace, don't hesitate to call the 633rd CES customer service center and ask for the brave souls at the entomology shop.

2012 National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

Individuals who wish to dispose of unwanted and unused prescription drugs may do so during the 2012 National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day event hosted April 28 at the Post Exchange from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day was initiated in September 2010 by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to encourage American citizens to turn in unused or expired prescribed medication for proper disposal. After it was reported that 242,000 pounds (121 tons) of prescription drugs had been turned in by the American public, Congress passed legislation amending the Controlled Substances Act to allow the DEA to develop a more permanent process for people to safely and conveniently dispose of their prescription drugs. This resulted in take-back sites being made available throughout the coun-

try in all 50 states and U.S. territories.

This marks the fourth time this event has been hosted in the U.S. The DEA has yielded continued success in following

events, collecting 376,593 pounds (188 tons) in April 2011 and 377,086 (188.5 tons) in November 2011, respectively.

According to DEA Administrator Mi-

chele M. Leonhart, “The amount of prescription drugs turned in by the American public during the past three Take-Back Day events speaks volumes about the need to develop a convenient way to rid homes of unwanted or expired prescription drugs.”

She added that these events have “dramatically reduced the risk of prescription drug diversion and abuse, and increased awareness of this critical public health issue.”

The U.S. Army is on board with providing continued support of this initiative as well. In a collaborative effort, U.S. Army Installations Management Command and U.S. Army Medical Command are coordinating Army support on Army installations. The Take-Back Day here is being hosted by personnel assigned to McDonald Army Health Center Pharmacy Services. The Health Center’s support of this initiative will undoubtedly aid in bringing national focus to the issue of pharmaceutical controlled substance abuse.

Along with members of the Provost Marshal Office, Sgt. 1st Class Taurus Buck, Pharmacy Services NCOIC, will be present throughout this event to monitor the collection process.

“This event will educate the community of the dangers associated with keeping unwanted medications in the home as well as the effects these medications can have on our environment if flushed down the toilet,” Buck said.

Sadly, community residents are often unaware of these potential dangers and often think to simply flush drugs down the toilet or toss them away in the trash as a means of disposal. But, Dr. Heather Pena, BCPS, warns against this.

“Drugs should never enter into our water supply, and therefore flushing or putting medications down the sink is bad for our environment,” explained Pena, the Health Center’s Clinical Pharmacist and acting Chief of Pharmacy. “This is a great opportunity for our patients to dispose of

their medications safely. It is also imperative that patients do not just throw out their medications in their trash. Children, animals, and others may take them out of the garbage and ingest them. The best way to do this is to crush the medications and then mix them with used coffee grounds or kitty litter and then throw this mixture away. Sharps containers must always be used for medications that are injected.”

Keeping these medicines in the home is regarded as a critical public health issue, as some become “highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.” Reports show that more Americans currently abuse prescription drugs than the number of those using cocaine, hallucinogens, heroin, and inhalants combined. The 2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health states that the majority of teens who abuse prescription drugs obtain them from family and friends for free, including from the home medicine cabinet.

Purging America’s home medicine cabinets of unwanted or expired medications is one of four action items outlined in the White House’s prescription drug abuse prevention strategy entitled “Epidemic: Responding to America’s Prescription Drug Abuse Crisis.”

Twenty-two soldiers assigned to the 331st Transportation Company (Modular Causeway System), 24th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade, were decorated for their actions in Antarctica by the commander of U.S. Transportation Command, Gen. William M. Fraser, at a ceremony, April 9.

The soldiers received Joint Service Achievement Medals for their role in Operation Deep Freeze, a yearly operation to support the science and research activities conducted by the U.S. Antarctic Program.

2nd Lt. Bill Battles, platoon leader for the 331st TC, expressed his gratitude for the soldiers awarded JSAM’s.

“What they did was impressive.

They stayed strong during the tough conditions and inhospitable environment,” said Battles. “They certainly endured when temperatures were below freezing, which was most of

the time there.”

“I applaud you all.”

After the ceremony, Pfc. Allison Lowber, a watercraft operator for the 331st TC, was able to reflect on her first deployment overseas.

“It was an experience that opened my eyes. I felt like we were trained enough and that I would never forget the experience,” said Lowber. “I am now more willing to go where the Army takes me next.”

The “Causeway or No Way” company proved to be vital to the success of the Joint Task Force - Support Forces Antarctica, comprised of U.S. Navy, Army and Air Force and New Zealand Armed Forces, to ensure the success the National Science Foundation’s research now and into future.

The U.S. Air Force uses a memorialization program to provide lasting honor and pay tribute to military and civilian personnel, deceased or living. Staff Sgt. William Pitsenbarger received the nation’s highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for risking his life on April 11, 1966 near Cam My, Republic of Vietnam, while assigned as a Pararescue Crew Member, Detachment 6, 38th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, by organizing and coordinating rescue efforts, caring for the wounded, preparing casualties for evacuation, and insuring that the mission continued in a smooth and orderly fashion.

These are a few of the names emblazoned on the outer walls of Langley Air Force Base’s Airman dormitories, which house a considerable number of the installation’s junior enlisted Airmen.

But who are these people, any why are their names plastered on dorm buildings?

The dormitories are named in honor of Airmen with records of exemplary and honorable service. The Air Force’s memorialization program provides lasting honor and pays tribute to AF military and civilian personnel, deceased or living.

When submitting a package to the memorialization program, naming considerations include individuals who displayed heroism at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty, for performing highly responsible duties in an outstanding manner, and/or making major contributions to the development or mission.

When naming real estate, only Airmen, Department of the AF civilians, and private sector citizens are considered. Indi-

viduals who were assigned to an air component of the United States Army before the AF became a separate entity are also eligible for memorialization honors.

Once in effect, the renaming of any installation, street, building or facility is forbidden as long as the installation remains active, except under unique circumstances.

“It is quite a process to change the name of a street or building after it has been memorialized,” said Amy Russell, Air Combat Command historian.

While several of the dorm buildings on Langley pay tribute to Airmen who served here, Russel said a few buildings bear the names of highly influential, trailblazing individuals. For example, Airey, Barnes, Cunningham, nor Pitsenbarger served here.

Airey Hall Chief Master Sgt. Paul Airey served as an aerial gunner on B-24 bombers during World War II. Forced to bail out of his aircraft, he was captured and became a prisoner of war in Germany from July 1944 to May 1945.

On April 20, 1985, the brakes on “Nine-Six” failed and it ran off the end of the runway at Wilkes-Barre Airport, Penn., killing Eberflus.

Sgt. Richard Renna enlisted in the Air Force on April 26, 1986 and attended technical training at Chanute AFB, Ill. Assigned to 1913th Communications Group in May 1987, Renna became a model Airman. He headed the 1st Communications Squadron self-help facility improvement team. In his free time, he volunteered as a police officer in Poquoson, Va., as well as a member of the Buckroe Beach volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.

Jordan Hall Chief Master Sgt. Donald Melton Jordan learned shortly after assuming his duties with the 1st Security Police Squadron at Langley AFB he had terminal bone cancer. He retired in September 1983, and died just weeks later on Oct. 7.

Olsavsky Hall Airman David J. Olsavsky served with the 1st Fighter Wing as a non-destructive inspection specialist. Olsavsky entered the military in October 1988. Olsavsky arrived at Langley AFB and the 1st FW in March 1989 after finishing technical school and was assigned to the wing’s non-destructive inspection laboratory. He passed away in August of 1989.

Pitsenbarger Hall Staff Sgt. William Pitsenbarger flew almost 300 rescue missions in Vietnam; he risked his life during the war to rescue downed soldiers and fliers. On April 11, 1966, the 21-year-old, known as “Pits” to his friends, was killed while defending some of his wounded comrades. For his bravery and sacrifice, he received the Air Force Cross. In 2000, his medal was up-

Williams Hall The namesake of Langley’s newest dormitory, Staff Sgt. Dale Williams was originally assigned to the 1st Component Repair Squadron at Langley and later moved to the 71st Aircraft Maintenance Unit. Williams lost his life in a motorcycle accident March 2, 1985. He was 25 years old.

You may have seen that message, or parts of it, but I’d like to take the opportunity to address it with you directly.

The theme of the message was that too much arbitrary guidance could prove to be counterproductive. As supervisors, the more leverage we have to deal with situations on a case-by-case basis, the better.

ship and mentorship will shape how they eventually supervise. Therefore, first-line supervisors have an incredible responsibility. NCOs should set young Airmen up for success by outlining specifically how to earn their highest rating. Following that, mentoring and additional feedback should address specific shortfalls and how to overcome them.

We are growing leaders, not judging Airmen on their ability to get it right on their own. As a supervisor, you should do all you can to help your Airmen succeed.

When used properly, the formal feedback process is a good foundation for making this happen.

Young Airmen are our most precious resource. We spend millions of dollars recruiting, training, and equipping them to execute the tactical parts of the mission, and they never let us down.

We owe Junior Enlisted Airmen the proper training, education and experiences it takes to develop them into leaders in their field. We owe it to them to explain what is expected of them, and to follow up with how they are meeting our expectations. We owe them the mentorship and guidance they need to succeed, and they should be expected to do everything they can to meet the high standard set by the supervisor.

Our most senior enlisted Airmen have a tremendous amount of impact on this process. SNCOs should hold their NCOs and Senior Airmen accountable for conducting required feedback sessions, and support their fair ratings. SNCOs should understand that a 4 is not a bad rating, and that some Airmen will earn that rating in a given period. Rating an Airman fairly will not hurt their career; it should help them grow.

most of our reports are signed by a commander, I felt it was important that they understand where we’re coming from. Commanders are the key and final component of this process, and their support for fair and accurate ratings is critical.

Bold Leadership Some have suggested we set some arbitrary quota for the number of 5 ratings allowed in a given shop. They claim that would make things easier.

I’m not interested in doing what’s easy; I’m interested in doing what’s right. Implementing a quota would strip first-line supervisors of the leverage they need to grow tomorrow’s enlisted leaders.

We don’t need quotas. Instead, we need bold leaders to set high standards and help Airmen achieve them. We need bold leaders to confront those Airmen who don’t meet standards and document that feedback. We need those bold leaders to rate each individual fairly and accurately, and that isn’t easy. They will need the support of SNCOs and commanders to make it work.

It takes bold leadership on everyone’s part to develop Airmen.

The 633rd Air Base Wing Safety Office will host the second annual Armed Forces Motorcycle Ride and Rodeo May 11, 2012, at Fort Eustis, Va. The day’s events will include motorcycle and rider inspections, a poker run, rodeo events and a bike show. The event, which is open to all riders who are government ID cardholders, will take place at the Fort Eustis Army Reserve Center parking lot, building 1034, with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Last year’s rodeo attracted nearly 400 riders from all branches of the armed forces, including both military and civilian personnel. Motorcycle safety events have taken place since 2006 to promote motorcycle safety awareness.

“Operating a motorcycle involves more risk and takes more skill than operating a four-wheeled vehicle. As a result, combined with the popularity of

motorcycles and rising gas prices, the accidents, serious injury rates, and fatalities have significantly increased,” said Joe Novack, 633rd ABW senior safety specialist. “The overarching goal of this motorcycle event is to educate riders into making an extra effort to mitigate the risk while riding a motorcycle.”

Another goal is to foster continuing rider education in a positive riding environment by partnering beginners with experienced riders for a day of enjoyment.

Many motorcycle mishaps are the result of poor choices made by younger or inexperienced riders. Through mentoring and camaraderie at this event, riders can gain experience that will help them become safer riders on the roadways.

The Armyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s general tasked with projecting the future operating environment said that cyber attacks, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Arab Springâ&#x20AC;? rebellions and the economy are issues that could affect the military beyond the next decade.

The Army will need to think more about the probable, the possible and the unthinkable if it is going to get how it ďŹ ghts right in 2028, said Lt. Gen. Keith C. Walker, deputy commanding general for Training and Doctrine Command, or TRADOC, Futures. He spoke April 12 at the monthly breakfast gathering of Association of the U.S. Army members. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We approach this with a campaign of learning which is nothing more than a series of seminars, war games, experiments and studies,â&#x20AC;? Walker said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When we do our campaign of learning, we have a really broad audience of interagency; industry joins us and academia asks the hard questions about our concepts,â&#x20AC;? Walker said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We wanted a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;look out,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; so we did snapshots of 2018, 2020 and 2028, not that we ever dream we could get the future right, but the idea (is) to make sure we do not get the future too wrong.â&#x20AC;?

He said the economists who participated werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t â&#x20AC;&#x153;necessarily very optimisticâ&#x20AC;? through 2018 and had mixed feelings on economic improvement by 2020.

The second problem could be â&#x20AC;&#x153;Arab Springâ&#x20AC;? rebellions, protests and demonstrations throughout the Middle East which have forced rulers from powers in countries such as Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Yemen.

The general who is double-hatted as director of the Army Capabilities Integration Center said another big concern is the huge number of cyber attacks on the nation, something he added that is expected to grow. The nation needs to ďŹ gure out how to deal with these cyber attacks, he said.

Walker said the last predominant concern was the shift of U.S. strategy to the

PaciďŹ c and Asia. Given the number of PaciďŹ c nations and their economies and that eight of 10 of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest armies are in the PaciďŹ c poses a predominant concern, he said.

It was then-TRADOC commander Gen. Martin E. Dempsey who wanted his Future staff to think about the probable, the possible and the unthinkable because however the design of the Army is adjusted, it has to be able to deal with each of these areas, said Walker.

He cited examples of each: probable would be humanitarian crises, while a failed government would be classed as possible, while a nuclear crisis would be the unthinkable.

Walker said every adversary in the world knows how the U.S. would prefer to ďŹ ght, â&#x20AC;&#x153;stand off a great distance, be as precise as we can with precision munitions that are very clean and kill the bad guy.â&#x20AC;? Because adversaries know how the country would prefer to ďŹ ght, he said, no adversary in a right mind would attack in a conventional manner. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We believe adversaries who might face us would likely use hybrid tactics, a mix of conventional and unconventional means,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That would include [improvised explosive devices], rather sophisticated anti-tank guided missiles, and people not in uniform.â&#x20AC;?

Army medical professionals are encouraging adults and teens to get a tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis vaccine in an effort to shield infants from a preventable communicable disease.

The vaccine, often referred to as Tdap, is different from the tetanus-diphtheria shot adults get every 10 years; it has a pertussis component that aid persons from spreading pertussis to children and infants.

"Irrespective if you had the Td shot recently, you should have the Tdap now," said Victorio Vaz, an epidemiologist for Bavaria Medical Department Activity. "It is a onetime vaccine. This is a new vaccine that became available for teens and adults only in 2005."

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, can cause serious and sometimes life-threatening complications in infants and young children, especially those who are not fully vaccinated, Vaz said. It is caused by bacteria and is transmitted by coughs or sneezes. The bacteria become airborne and anyone close who inhales the bacteria can become infected.

Pertussis can be fatal in babies less than a year old. Of those infants who are infected with the disease, half will be hospitalized; one percent of infants hospitalized will die; one in ďŹ ve will get pneumonia; one in a 100 will have convulsions; half of those hospitalized will stop breathing for a while; and one in 300 will have brain damage.

In the U.S., there are more than 20,000 reported cases annually, he said.

"Before the pertussis vaccine became available, there were hundreds of thousands of cases each year in the United States," Vaz said. "Worldwide, just to put things into perspective, you are talking about 30 to 50 million cases and 300,000 deaths a year."

Before 2005, there were no vaccines for people older than six with a pertussis component, Vaz said. Parents, people expecting a child, grandparents, child care providers, siblings and health care providers are highly recommended to get a Tdap vaccine. People who have or anticipate having close contact with an infant less than 12 months, including pregnant women, should receive a single dose of Tdap if they have not previously received the vaccine.

Unvaccinated pregnant women are encouraged to get the vaccine at or shortly after week 20 of the pregnancy, he said.

"Vaccination of pregnant women can protect them and their babies by passing their antibodies to the baby before the baby reaches an age where they start getting the vaccine," Vaz said.

Vaccines for infants are recommended at two months, four months, six months and a year. Vaccinated children are protected against the disease, but if a child becomes infected with the disease, he will have a milder case of pertussis, but Vaz insists it is important for those around children to be immunized.
