DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE: LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE HOLOCAUST

Imagine constantly living in fear and wondering when you will be detained or killed. Being afraid to be seen on the streets, faced with losing your family members, job, home, business or place of worship all because of your ethnicity, or religious and political beliefs or physical and mental capabilities.

This is what life was like for Holocaust survivor, Kitty Saks, who was born in Vienna, Austria, and lived through those atrocities, and ultimately lost 27 family members.

The Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systemic persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945. Six million Jews were murdered and millions of other groups suffered grievous oppression and death under Nazi Germany.

At the age of five, Saks was living with her parents and grandparents in Vienna when a German Army officer decided to take their apartment for his personal use. Her grandfather was the first to be sent to the Lodz Ghetto, and later, both grandparents were sent to the death camps.

“We fled to Belgium which was not yet occupied by the Germans,” said Saks. “We had hopes of coming to the United States because my father’s first cousins lived in Norfolk, Virginia, and you needed a sponsor who would vouch for you for five years.”

When Saks’ father successfully crossed the border to Belgium, the plan was for Saks and her mother to join him soon.

While making numerous attempts to cross, Saks and her mother were caught by the border patrol.

After their successful crossing on the seventh attempt, Saks’ family tried to make arrangements to travel from Brussels to the United States.

“We were put on this list by a committee that was set up to get as many Jews who had the necessary papers to migrate to the United States, which we did have,” said Saks. “The German Army overtook Brussels on May 10, 1940 and we got stuck because our departure date was May 15, 1940.”

Saks was then placed into Belgium schools at age six and had to learn French.

Since it was too dangerous for her parents to be seen, Saks ran all of the errands and was forced to wear the Yellow Star, which, to this day, she has in her possession.

Saks recalled one day when she encountered her former gym teacher who warned her about the Gestapo and walking the streets while wearing the Yellow Star.

“Kitty, what are you doing walking the streets wearing a star? You know the Germans are going to stop you,” said her gym teacher. Saks replied “I got no choice.”

Shortly after the encounter, her teacher placed, then nineyear-old, Saks, into a Catholic convent under an assumed name, Rosette Nizolle.

in either Catholic convents or Catholic orphanages.

“The Catholics had a big influence on me, they saved my life and the lives of many of my girlfriends,” said Saks. “They took me in, gave me a different name, raised me Catholic and I became a hidden child of the Holocaust.”

Saks credits prayer, faith and the closeness of her family as her coping mechanisms for what she experienced.

“I think the Holocaust should never be forgotten and it should be taught in schools, but not just a few lines,” said Saks. “It is easier to hate people than to love people. When you don’t understand people, then it creates hatred, so I survived hatred.”

In 1980, Congress passed Public Law 96-388, which established the United States Holocaust Memorial Council to provide appropriate ways for the nation to annually commemorate Days of Remembrance while encouraging and sponsoring appropriate observances throughout the U.S. In 2017, the commemoration will take place April 23 to 30 and the theme is “Learning from the Holocaust: The Strength of the Human Spirit.”

‘Piering’ into future: Construction to improve fuel operations

Construction preparations for a new pier, which is used to receive jet fuel, began April 3, 2017.

The project, which is overseen by the 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron Fuels Facilities, is expected to be completed in 18 months.

According to Alan Whitman, 733rd LRS fuels storage contractor, workers are currently preparing for the new pier by moving water lines and things of that nature, and dredging the river to clear out the channel to make the new pier accessible to barges once it is put into place.

Whitman also explained that the current pier is outdated and not up to industry standards. Along with the new standards in place and the projected flood plain for the installation over the next 50 years, the pier could not simply be repaired, but had to be replaced completely. “[This pier has survived] Isabelle, Floyd and even Matthew and Sandy, but every time something broke, it put us out of commission for upwards of two to three months,” said Whitman. “With the new standards and the way the facility is going to be built, it should be able to withstand any and all of that so we can provide absolutely not interruption in service whatsoever.”

Construction of the new pier is also an important mission requirement for the 1st Fighter Wing.

According to U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Michael Lance, 733rd LRS fuels facilities NCO in charge, when the pier is out of commission, the 733rd LRS fuels facilities is forced to receive fuel by truck, which impacts the effectiveness of mission operations.

“The last time there was a storm, the whole pier seemed to have shifted over a foot, so we had no access to the pier for about three months, and we were receiving fuel by tank trucks instead of by barge, ” said Lance. “It really put a hinder on us, for the fact that you can receive one barge and offload about almost 700,000 gallons of fuel where one truck is only 7,500 gallons. In order to keep up or increase fuel level just a little bit, we would have to receive about 20 trucks a day with [normal flight operations]. Then, there a lot of transient aircraft that also get fueled.”

The new pier will be constructed out of concrete and will measure approximately 36 feet-wide to give first responders proper access to the waterway, in case of an emergency. Additionally, a boat ramp will be included for easier access for first responders.

“We’ll be able to have emergency vehicles on the pier and the fire department will be able to deploy their boat during any incidents,” said Lance adding that new cameras will also be installed to help 633rd Security Forces members keep an eye on the Back River and

Renowned Triple Ace leaves historic legacy

During World War II and the Vietnam War, renowned fighter pilot U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Robin Olds shot down more than 15 enemy aircraft and is rated a triple ace, after achieving aerial combat victories in World War II and the Vietnam War. An American Fighter Ace is a fighter pilot who has served honorably in a U.S. military service and has destroyed five or more confirmed enemy aircraft in aerial combat during a war or conflict in which American armed forces have participated, according to Public Law 113-105 passed by Congress in 2014.

To honor Olds and other fighter pilots for their heroic military service and defense of our country’s freedom throughout the history of aviation warfare, the American Fighter Aces Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2014 awarded a gold medal to American Fighter Aces collectively.

Olds is the son of U.S. Army Air Forces Maj. Gen. Robert Olds, a World War I and World War II veteran. While attending school in Hampton, Virginia, Olds lived on Langley Field during his father’s various duty assignments at the installation.

Although it’ll be a while before the U.S. Air Force Airmen involved in fueling operations can break in the new pier, Lance expressed his gratitude for the new structure. “[The new pier] will be able to withstand storms a lot better and won’t be out of commission for three months at a time,” he said. “It’ll also be safer in general.

While attending the U.S. Military Academy, Olds played football and was selected as an all-American tackle in 1942.

After receiving his commission to second lieutenant, Olds completed pilot training in 1943 and flew numerous aircraft throughout his career, including the P-38 Lightning, P-51 Mustang, P-80 Shooting Star and F-4 Phantom II. In 1948, Olds participated in the U.S. Air Force and Royal air force Officer Exchange Program, which provided exposure and awareness of a foreign air force or sister service through an exchange of ideas and procedures and fostered an understanding of the doctrines and policies of both services.

During his duty assignment in England, Olds served as the first American

commander of the No. 1 Fighter Squadron at Royal air force Station Tangmere, West Sussex, United Kingdom, which was home to the British Gloster Meteor jet fighter.

An Air Force Cross recipient and National War College graduate, Olds later served as commandant of cadets at the U.S. Air Force Academy. In 1968, Olds was promoted to the rank of brigadier general.

According to the American Fighter Aces Congressional Gold Medal Act, beginning with World War I and the first use of airplanes in warfare, military services have maintained official records of individual aerial victory credits during every major conflict. Of more than 60,000 U.S. military fighter pilots that have taken to the air, less than 1,500 have become Fighter Aces.

FAMILY CHILD CARE PROVIDERS OF YEAR RECOGNIZED

Two family care providers from the Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis Child Development Centers on Joint Base Langley-Eustis were named Provider of the Year for 2016.

Langley Air Force Base 2016 Provider of the Year: Cassandra Thomas, U.S. Air Force Child Development Center family child care provider, was named the 2016 Provider of the Year for Langley.

To win the Provider of the Year, a family child care provider must pass inspection visits and evaluations throughout the entire year.

“We feel like we’re doing a great service for the military,” said Thomas. “By them coming out and checking on us, making sure we’re following the guidelines, it is great to be noticed for what you’re doing for the service as well.”

According to Thomas, child care has always been a passion before she worked for the CDC. “I’ve always wanted to [work in] child care,” said Thomas. “However, for 12 years I worked with hospitals, helping them get their revenue back for uninsured

patients. Helping special needs children and working with children has always been a passion that I’ve wanted to do.”

Ft. Eustis 2016 Provider of the Year: Kathryn Barrager, U.S. Air Force Child Development Center family child care provider, was awarded the Provider of the Year for her efforts to provide Ft. Eustis families support and care for their children.

“I started [at the CDC] two years ago,” said Barrager.

“I wanted to find a way to work and stay at home with my youngest. When we were stationed in Hawaii my oldest child went to a Family Child Care home and I loved it. I then thought I should pursue being an FCC provider so I can stay home with him.

According to Barrager, being recognized for her hard work as an FCC provider was rewarding.

“It feels good to know that my hard work doesn’t go unnoticed,” said Barrager. “I work really hard to provide a safe home for families and it’s nice to know that you’re appreciated.”

Barrager, who love her job as an FCC, looks to expand and make a bigger effort for military children in the future.

The 633rd Security Forces Squadron will host events May 17 and May 19, 2017 in recognition of Police Week.

• May 17 – Defenders Challenge will be held at Shellbank Fitness Center track. There will be teams of four and each team must have one member of the opposite sex per team. The challenge will include a HUMVEE push, team push-ups, jug carries, tire flips and a litter carry. Teams must register no later than May 12, 2017 by calling 764-5526.

• May 19 – The Police Week Bowling Tournament will be held at Langley Lanes at Langley Air Force Base at 2 p.m. The tournament is open to all Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., military and law enforcement personnel. April is Sexually Transmitted Diseases Awareness Month and it is important to get tested. JBLE Family Child Care Program

The Joint Base Langley-Eustis Family Child Care Program is looking for child care providers. They are searching for those interested in a professional, portable career that will allow those to stay at home and run a home-based business.

The program is available for children ages two weeks to 12 years old. Child care providers must be at least 18 years old be able to read and speak English, be in good health, and willing to undergo a background check.

The FCC will provide training and materials to get your business started. Training may include First Aid, CPR, health, safety, developmentally appropriate practices and child guidance. All individuals providing child care in their home for more than 10 hours a week must be licensed.
