The 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron Airmen are dedicated professionals who are committed to achieving excellence through focusing on the mission, providing global response and building future leaders.

This year, the 733rd LRS won the 2016 National Defense Transportation Association Unit Award. The NDTA program annually presents a series of prestigious awards recognizing individual members, corporate members, chapters, and military units for demonstrating outstanding accomplishments in transportation, logistics and passenger travel.

“The 733rd LRS is one of the most unique logistics units in the air force,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Alex Mol, 733rd LRS commander. “Winning this award proves that we have leaders in this unit who create a climate that breeds excellence.”

The squadron manages logistics programs for Joint Base Langley-Eustis and supports vehicle management, supply, fuel and mobility operations for installation and tenant unit activities. The 733rd LRS also supports and sustains JBLE’s F-22 Raptors and T-38 Talon fleet as well as five wings.

In addition, the 733rd LRS is the only logistics unit that provides operations by every mode of transportation.

“We have vehicle operations, a small air terminal, and at Fort Eustis, there is a rail and harbor operation,” said Mol. “We’re a small unit but our diversity and scope of responsibility reflects how hard we work every day to achieve this level of success.”

Some of the 733rd LRS’ accomplishments include assuming Norfolk Air Mobility Command’s mission by deploying and receiving 1,700 passengers, and sustaining operations for two four-star commanders, 34 organizations and five wings with a $5.4 million budget and $1.6 billion in assets. The 733rd LRS also executed logistics for the 100 years of Langley airshow by guiding 41 aircraft and directing 183 vehicles to move 15,000 personnel.

Mol said their number one job is to ensure they can accomplish the mission and their main goals have always been accountability, readiness and recognition.

“We push our flight leaders, young officers and senior civilians to be leaders and because we have focused on the people, we continue to achieve great results,” said Mol. The NDTA Award was not the only recognition 733rd LRS received, Air Combat Command recently awarded Mol the General Thomas P. Gerrity Award.

The Gerrity Award is an individual award for outstanding contributions to logistics operations, management, business processes and the success of logistics operations worldwide.

“Although I’m proud to receive this individual award, I still see this accomplishment as a team award,” said Mol. “This unit is made up of 408 personnel and I couldn’t have

done it without them.”

Mol emphasized the importance of leadership and the U.S. Air Force’s core values: Integrity First, Service Before Self and Excellence in All We Do. “Our success in winning the unit and individual awards is centered on our core values. But most importantly leading by example,” said Mol. According to Mol, he has learned many leadership principles, but caring for people and impacting their lives professionally helped him to become a better leader. He said the Airmen are the backbone behind what the 733rd LRS accomplishes, without their hard work and dedication there is no mission success.

After receiving the ACC Gerrity Award, Mol is now a nominee in the Air Force-level competition. As Mol prepares for a permanent change of station assignment to Kadena Air Base, Japan, he hopes that the professionalism and dedication to excellence continues to grow at the 733rd LRS.

When the U.S. Census Bureau conducts its population count in the year 2020, the number of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders living in the United States is expected to increase four times as rapidly as the overall U.S. population, based on the previous census that occurred in 2010.

May is designated as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to recognize the important contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to the nation’s growth and to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States. The month also commemorates the anniversary of the nation’s first transcontinental railroad, which was built primarily by Chinese immigrants and completed in 1869 in Promontory, Utah.

This year’s theme is “Unite Our Voices

by Speaking Together.”

Born in the Philippines and the youngest of four children, Airman 1st Class

Jan Derrek Gascon, 439th Supply Chain Operations Squadron mission capability technician, was 10 years old when his family moved to California.

“My parents moved our family to the states so that we could seek a better future,” said Gascon. “I decided to join the Air Force when I was 18 for security, a better future and to travel. I would recommend that people take advantage of the opportunities that the military gives you – education, travel and a career path.”

Based on his experiences growing up and attending high school in Los Angeles, California, Gascon said he is not surprised to learn that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are among the fastest growing population groups in the U.S., with more than 65,000 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders serving in the U.S. armed forces today.

“I have a brother and sister on activeduty in the Air Force and another brother who is in the Army,” said Gascon. “They are the main reason I decided to join the military.”

One unique aspect of people born in the Philippines is the ability to self-identify as either Asian-American or Pacific Islander.

Gascon said he considers himself to be Asian-American, while his father prefers to be identified as a Pacific Islander.

According to the 2017 Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month presidential proclamation, there are more than 20 million Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders living in the United States.

“Each day, through their actions, they make America more vibrant, more prosperous and more secure,” said President Donald Trump. “Our nation is particularly grateful to the many Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who have served and are currently serving in our Armed Forces, protecting the nation and promoting freedom and peace around the world.”

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN PROMOTES HEALTHIER LIVING AMONG SOLDIERS, FAMILIES

The largest Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation campaign, Army Strong B.A.N.D.S., is back.

The U.S. Army Installation Management Command’s annual program kicked off this year on May 1 at 68 installations, garrisons, forward-deployed locations and Reserve centers, pushing Soldiers, their Families, and Department of Defense civilians to focus on “balance, activity, nutrition, determination and strength.”

Locations Army-wide are promoting programs and activities that support Soldier and Family resilience and encourage individual fitness throughout the National Physical Fitness and Sports month of May. All told, Strong B.A.N.D.S. will grace 347 programs across the Army.

“Joint Base Lewis-McChord partici-

pates in Strong B.A.N.D.S. because it is not just a program for participants, it is a personal journey,” said Aaron Jones, JBLM’s sports, fitness and aquatics director.

“Strong B.A.N.D.S. provides more than a one-time experience for participants,” Jones said. “It allows for new habits to be built while being surrounded by a positive support system. Participants who go through the month of healthy living programs not only kick-start their path to health but gain the knowledge and stamina to make it their new lifestyle.”

“Train. Willing. Able.” is the theme of the 2017 Army Strong B.A.N.D.S. campaign. Each participating location has selected at least five fitness activities or events to implement in May. “We’re not asking them to create new programs — just to highlight existing programs to help generate extra buzz and participation in a class or program that

SENATE CONFIRMS WILSON AS AIR FORCE SECRETARY

Heather Wilson will be the next secretary of the Air Force, following her confirmation by the Senate May 8, 2017.

Wilson, who is stepping down from her position as the president of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology to take the post, is expected to be sworn in within a week.

“We live in a remarkable country, protected by innovators and intrepid Airmen who take great risks on our behalf,” said Wilson. “I look forward to getting to work, focusing on readiness, modernization, development of leaders and research for the future.”

Wilson graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in the third class to include women. After graduating from USAFA in 1982, she earned masters and doctoral degrees as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University in England. She

served as an Air Force officer in Europe during the Cold War and on the National Security Council Staff under President George H.W. Bush during the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the collapse of the Warsaw Pact. She has also worked as an advisor to several large defense and scientific organizations both before and after serving for a decade in the U.S. Congress.

The daughter and granddaughter of aviators, Wilson is an instrument rated private pilot.

Wilson becomes the second confirmed appointee in the Defense Department and will be responsible for organizing, training and equipping the U.S. Air Force of 660,000 Active-duty, Guard, Reserve and civilian Airmen, as well as managing its $132 billion budget.

Wilson replaces Lisa Disbrow, who has been Acting Secretary of the Air Force since Jan. 20, 2017.

ARMY REVS UP NEW TACTICAL VEHICLE

While the Humvee has served the U.S. Armed Forces for more than 30 years, organizations have been working to develop a new vehicle to take its place, the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle.

According to Oshkosh Defense, the tactical vehicle manufacturer awarded the JLTV contract, the JLTV is a tactical wheeled vehicle which includes hull designs that are built to optimize survivability against a full range of blast and ballistic threats, including protection from underbelly blasts, and an “intelligent” suspension system that can be raised and lowered for off-road conditions. It was designed to bridge the capability gap in balanced protection, performance, and payload between the lighter Humvee and the more heavily armored Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles.

ity, but we realized on an asymmetrical battlefield, that there were both side and underbody threats,” said U.S. Army Col. Shane N. Fullmer, JLTV joint project manager. “We tried to armor it, but it really reduced that ability to get through soft soil and while it has side protection, it’s very hard to give it any underbody protection. This (JLTV) really restores that balance.”

The JLTV program is an Army-led program in collaboration with the U.S. Marine Corps to replace a portion of each branch’s light tactical vehicle fleets. The new truck was designed to boost protection and provide improved maneuverability, transportability, maintainability and connectivity to 21st-century battlefield networks.

Senior leaders from U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command test drove the vehicle through a JBLE training area to experience the new suspension and overall feel of the vehicle. Many senior leaders who have ridden in the vehicle described the ride as much smoother than that of other tactical vehicles.

“We have found that some people are skeptical because they have a lot of experience riding in Humvees, until they see it in person or ride in it and then they’re no longer skeptical,” said Fullmer. “This ride is just tremendously better than Humvees. The Humvee has been a great vehicle and has provided a tremendous service, but this vehicle is just a leap ahead.”

“I was working on this in 2010 from the requirements side, so to see this vehicle here, this vehicle that is going to go to our units, this really is a great day,” said Dyess. “It was a very smooth ride and I know this is going to be a great capability for our soldiers.”

Soldiers and Marines can expect to see JLTVs within their units beginning in 2019, following ongoing additional automotive, reliability, radio range and weapon system testing. By 2022, production for U.S. Armed Forces is expected to reach 17,000, followed by an additional approximate 35,000 trucks over the next 20 years.

Among the vessels at Joint Base Langley Eustis’ Third Port sits a shop that keeps boats afloat through meticulous detailed work.

The 558th Transportation Company, 10th Battalion, 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) welding shop ensures ships’ crews stay safe underway through quick and reliable metal fabrication services within the port.

While the metals technologists work solely on ship materials, their job encompasses an array of detail oriented work, from a boat’s hull to pipes on its air conditioning unit.

“Welding is insanely important,” said U.S. Army Spc. Anthony Cole, 558th Transportation Company allied trade specialist. “When you look around, anything you look at has welds on it, has been machined and put together somehow. If you don’t have a good weld, it’s a danger to anyone who uses that item.”

According to U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jessy

Kingrey, 558th Trans. Co. welding shop maintenance control sergeant, the brigade’s welding shop, is co-located at Third Port to provide fabrication services sooner than if the job was contracted out to the civilian sector.

By not contracting services, the shop also saves the installation and the Army money on transportation, time and resources.

“Our shop is here to make repairs last,” said Kingrey. “Not only can we repair metals, we can replace them and make them better at the same time.”

Although the welding shop works on mostly restoration services, the job also allows welders to be creative with their work.

For example, Cole said he spent a week building an oxygen bottle fixture completely by hand, ensuring every groove and bolt was perfectly aligned.

“Welding is an awesome trade to know – it’s an art form,” said Cole. “Every item that you do is like your trademark. Welds last for years and years. It’s kind of like your stamp on the world.”

Air Force’s oldest Fighter Squadron celebrates centennial

The Air Force’s oldest fighter squadron celebrated its 100th year anniversary at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, May 8, 2017.

The 27th Fighter Squadron, dates back to World War I and was originally organized at Kelly Field, Texas.

It was later assigned to the 1st Pursuit Group in early 1918, and is now known as the 1st Operations Group.

The squadron also served in the European theater from March 1918 until armistice in November of that year.

However, the squadron is also known as the unit with the first Airman to receive the Medal of Honor.

Second Lt. Frank Luke, known as the “Arizona Balloon Buster,” was a fighter pilot for the 27th Aero Squadron, now known as the 27th FS, with the 1st Pursuit Group. Luke received the Medal of Honor after he voluntarily started a patrol for German observation balloons. While being pursued by eight German planes that protected these balloons, he unhesitatingly attacked and shot down three German balloons and two German planes. After he was forced to land from re-

ceiving massive damage to his aircraft, Luke continued defending himself. Instead of surrendering, he killed six enemy troops and wounded many more with his pistol until he fell dead from a wound to his chest.

“He is a big name for the 27th Fighter Squadron,” said Joshua Lashley, 1st Fighter Wing historian. “That mentality, that courage, that bravery, that spirit is something they still carry out today.”

The 27th FS carries these traits through their mission to deliver F-22 Raptor airpower world-wide on short notice to support the combatant commander ’s taskings.

“For 100 years, the 1st FW has been at the forefront of aerial combat,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Peter Fesler, 1st FW commander. “To have the 27th FS deployed on their centennial, participating in combat against our enemies, is one of the greatest ways to honor its heritage and tradition of combat excellence.”

Becoming a part of the 1st FW also suits the 27th FS because they were the first in many things, said Lashley.

Europe during World War II, the first to fly jet aircraft, the first to receive the F-15 Eagle and in 2003, the 27th FS was announced as the first operational squadron to fly the F-22 Raptor.

SURVIVING THE STORM: MY JOURNEY TO RECOVERY

Editor’s note: The following is part of a commentary that was written in observance of National Mental Health Month.

Although “wingmanship” is something I live every day now as an Airman, the concept is something I have been familiar with my entire life. I specifically remember a moment this came into play when I was a 16-year-old assistant Cub Scout leader.

We were in the woods and I had sent my pack of eightyear-old Cub Scouts on a mission to find branches to whittle into slingshots.

“Remember to look for strong, mendable tree branches!”

I shouted to them.

Once each of them came back with a branch, I grabbed my own and stood in the center of the group. I started to peel the tree bark with a knife, unveiling its underside and how to bend the branches without snapping them. The scouts stared up at me, their mouths hanging open.

As I continued to whittle the branch, all the boys suddenly popped up from their seats and began panicking around me.

“I need a buddy!” one of them shouted. I watched as the scouts paired up, taking off and yelling “Help, Ms. Kaylee is bleeding! Help!”

I looked down and realized what all the fuss was about – I had given myself a small cut on my finger. Looking back at this now, I can’t help but chuckle a bit at the support those Cub Scouts gave me over a small wound that only needed a Band-Aid. I wish I had those tiny wingmen these past nine months.

A STORM BREWING Last fall, I felt like I was losing my foundation. Within a short time frame, my best friend got a new assignment to California, and my supervisor, who had become my biggest mentor, left for a deployment. Soon after, I found myself significantly struggling to find my place as a new Airman, and perform at the same level as my peers.

In the blink of an eye, I felt the structure of my life crumble underneath me. I felt as if there was a big storm brewing in my head. I suddenly developed this constant overwhelming feeling, like I was spiraling down into a deep pit and couldn’t find a grip to hold. I felt like I was never going to be able to pull myself out of that hole. I felt like I was never going to feel happy again. All I wanted was to hit rock bottom, so maybe, just maybe, I could start over again.

I kept begging, “Please just make it stop.”

What did I want to stop? My life? No, not my life. My thoughts, the pain, the sadness.

“You’re never good enough. People don’t even like you.

You’re constantly a bother. You’re awful at everything,” I would say to myself.

These constantly-racing thoughts taunted me.

These self-destructive feelings began to fill me with rage. I

started to snap at others — friends, family and even coworkers. The smallest comments would trigger me. I felt trapped inside my own mind, like I was watching an imposter take possession of my ordinarily warm and friendly disposition.

This imposter was slowly whittling away who I was – Kaylee, the person I had spent the last 24 years shaping.

It’s been nearly a year since this all started, and although this chapter of my life is now turning around for the better, my journey wasn’t easy. It wasn’t a story of clouds parting in the sky, where I suddenly was full of sunshine and happiness.

That’s not at all what happened.

In reality, I spent seven months undergoing various treatments to learn how to manage my depression and anxiety.

Manage, not cure.

THE CLOUDS ROLL IN Before my supervisor left for his deployment, we talked about his personal stresses, and how he had struggled trying to find his place as an Airman. He had told me that going to the 633rd Medical Group Mental Health clinic had improved his mental health.

With this in mind, I decided to start my journey toward recovery by speaking with a therapist at the clinic. After just that first appointment, I left with a better understanding of what I was suffering from; that it was treatable and common among military members.

At that moment, I felt less alone. But I was still lost — pieces of me where still chipping away.

If I thought things couldn’t get any worse in my life at that point, my father was also diagnosed with a myelofibrosis, which the doctors first believed to be bone-marrow cancer.

I was encompassed in a fear of losing him to this disorder – losing him too soon.

After receiving this news, my new supervisor suggested I visit a chaplain. To be honest, I had reservations about this — I am far from religious, and wasn’t sure what to expect.

Speaking with a chaplain was certainly not my first choice as a resource. Nevertheless, I decided it couldn’t hurt to give it a shot.

After telling him I was not religious, he was glad to just speak with me about what I was going through. I must say, I left his office feeling better about my dad’s situation and hopeful for his recovery.

During my own recovery, there were still times when I would feel completely numb to the world around me, or I would be so annoyed I would lash out at coworkers over the minutest details. I tried to stick with my recovery plan, whether that was speaking with my therapist or a resiliency counselor from the Army Community Service facility at Fort Eustis.

Even though I was seeking help from several different support services, I still never felt like I was doing any better – in reality, I didn’t want to get better. Although I knew I needed the help and had reached out for it, there was this

part of me that couldn’t accept it.

Looking back now, I think I had just become comfortable with the sadness. It was a blanket I used to hide myself from the outside world. I just couldn’t find the energy to care about anything SEEKING SHELTER On one specific day this past January as I dealt with the storm brewing inside my mind, an actual storm swirled around the Hampton Roads area. The base was on missionessential reporting for several days due to snow, and instead of enjoying the “time off,” I stayed sheltered in my apartment for four days, limiting my interactions with the outside world.

I never felt more alone than during those four days. I could not find the energy to leave the comfort of my couch. I barely ate or showered or groomed in any shape or form. I sat staring blankly at my television screen, not taking much in.

After that weekend, I discussed the events with my therapist and we agreed that I needed a strong treatment program. That day, I willingly admitted myself into Naval Medical Center Portsmouth’s Crisis Stabilization Program.

In that one-week program, we spoke about self-care, communication, fears and expectations, and being mindful. We also practiced these concepts through art therapy, yoga, meditations and group therapy exercises.

The program deliberately forced me to look at all events from my past and present that may have contributed to my anxiety and depression. Facing those things for an entire week was emotionally exhausting, but it also refreshed my sense of being. I felt as if it mended my self-worth and life expectations. In no way was I “cured” from my depression and anxiety, but for the first time, I felt like I could tackle it.

When I left the hospital on the last day of the program, I felt like I was slowly starting to resemble who I once was.

Life lessons over lunch workplace study

Join the new Life Lessons over Lunch the first and third Thursdays of the month from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the 633rd Mission Support Group Conference Room. The Langley Chapel offers this marketplace initiative where participants meet on a regular basis to view a DVD message over lunch. Life Lessons provides a unique opportunity for participants to enter an environment in the workplace where they can consider relevant insights around personal and professional challenges. The principles are presented from a biblical perspective but are non-denominational and open to all active-duty U.S. service members. A free lunch will be provided.
